1.      Briefly describe your

1.      Briefly describe your current position and responsibilities.

Manage Network and Engineering teams for Big10 Medical Center.  This involves all aspects of networking, cable plant (copper and fiber), electirical, environmentals and project management associated with these services for approximately 4 million square feet.  Includes all wireless, networking, routing, switching, firwalls, etc....

2.      What do your subordinates expect from you on the job?

Clearly defined goals, deliverables and realistic expectations.  The tools to do their job, encouragement and trust.

3.      What are the major stresses and challenges you face on the job?

Too much to do with too little time and too little staff.  Take all the joys of academia, mix in research, add a dash of actual healthcare and then mix with patient issues and it comes close to giving you an idea.  No downtime, no failure, but give me all the bells and whistles and protect me from myself while you do it.

4.      What, if anything, do you dislike about the job?

The ever growing need to politic at all levels, up and down, to get the right things done.

5.      What do you like best about your job?

It is never boring and there is always a new problem to solve, even if that problem is simply one of scale.

6.      What are the critical differences between average managers and top-performing managers?

Ability to execute, honesty and a true passion for what they do for their teams and their cusomters.

7.      Think about the skills and knowledge that you need to be effective in your job. What are they, and how did you acquire them?

I aquired many of them through mutliple jobs.  There is no easy way to list it outside of a full vitae.  Basically learn everything you can about your field, learn to apply it (read real experience) and then figure out how to get others to believe in your methods, vision and practices - or learn from theirs.

8.      What have been your biggest mistakes thus far? Could you have avoided them? If so, how?

Leaving mangement to get back to engineering.....just got stuck back in management.  If you have the skills and the determination, a good employer will use you where they need you.
