Ya he def needs to hang out with JH a little more. The more people that write posts about the parallels with JB and Hoke the more they become apparent to me. Almost like there is not enough competitiveness there. JB is a great guy and I think he's a pretty good coach but there are some serious shortcomings with him mainly in recruiting and how he operates his system and certain positions. It's all very soft and finesse. When we had real success is when Mitch McGary and Jordan Morgan were rostered. I think JB's system is good but if you're going to place such a high value on a perimeter game then by God you have better make sure you have a couple post guys who can play and bang. Shit even if we had someone who is 3/4's of what McGary was right now I believe we'd be in a better position. I understand the early entry stuff hurt us but still. The team and program reeks soft to me. M isn't leaving the big ten and soft doesn't cut it In this conference. JB needs to figure it out quick.

My other annoyance with JB. And I understand he's getting bashed in this thread but I don't care anymore- the fact that he's in love with the stretch 4/5. with Wilson, Donnal, Wagner(who by which I think will be ok) THESE GUYS AREN'T REALLY STRETCHING THE FLOOR FOR YOU! So you're left with a soft 6'9"- 6'11" PF/C who cannot shoot, jump, rebound, block a shot, or knows what it means to battle down low. I can't think of one guy outside of McGary and throw Morgan in there his last two years that he's brought in that can rebound, defend the rim and be tough down low. He is continually trying to reincarnate what he had with Pittsnogle and it's not working. I understand we have other issues throughout this roster but his recruiting with 4/5's has got to go. He is sticking to this system where D and rebounding are afterthoughts and he wants this high potent offense but everything else falls by the wayside. But the problem is that when you play a team who commits to defense and add in the fact they have quality athletes your offense and perimeter oriented philosophy get stonewalled. Smotrytz is the only guy I thought played as a quality stretch four and he ended up transferring. We've said it for a while "you live by the three and you die by it". JB is going to have to figure this recruiting thing out or I have a feeling he may end being on thin ice.

Exactly! Landing talent/athleticsm and identifying that talent needs to be much better. Can't have a squad full of walk-one, and 2/3 star misfires. Recruiting has to be better. Bottom line. Good coach, good at developing kids but the last two years has really dropped the ball in recruiting.

Good point. We could have a better stable of linebackers than what the perception seems.

Yes it is unfortunate that we lose out on an OT but I think with JH and Drev the worries become a little less worrisome. 2017 class will obviously see a heavy OL, DL and LB haul. And with the targets on the board they could possibly play as true freshman. I know it's rare that you see OL start right away but you see it happen and its not to say it wouldn't work out.

Stand corrected on the timeout usage. Could you touch on glaring recruiting misfires? Quite a disparity in this matchup wouldn't you say? Or just off night?

It really seemed like the team and Beilein were just ill prepared for this game. I mean you have a top 25 team rolling into your house and you let this happen. The two time outs left in the first half is not good.

Perfect example right here of players being able to flip and be wishy washy all the way up to signing day. But Oh the sky is falling if a coach tells a kid a month out that he hasn't lived up to the billing, M's expectations, and their playing time/role will be in question. Going to be fine though. We have a lot of options for the tackle position in next years class.

Just watching Kam when he's on the floor it just looks like 1. He's lost 2. He doesn't posses the athletic ability to play and play well at this level. 3. His shot is broke.
|1 week 5 days ago||It may not be sweet ole||
It may not be sweet ole grammys way of doing things but the bottom line is JH is searching for the best and the best fits for his program. And for all the fans up in arms about continuously losing to our two biggest rivals well, this is the first step in raising the bar in AA and gain some ground or presumably getting the eventual upper hand. Not to mention that most of us do not know 100% of the stories that come through as well as the fact that JH is doing these kids a favor in the end. As a master talent evaluator he projects them and what kind of role and playing time they will receive and with the two guys so far this year it wasn't going to be much. So take your game somewhere where you can get on the field for a couple years and get your degree. JH is raising the bar at M and he's doing it guns a blazin, and there may be some shrapnel along the way. As long as he's not breaking M or NCAA rules than it is what it is. You're all in or you're not. We knew what we were getting. Borderline psychotic tendencies. And for anyone who thinks it effects future recruits - it won't effect any recruit whom JH and staff are high on and recruit personally and heavily. JH is elevating the M brand, because we all know that what sells is the product on the field. How do you attain that at the highest level? Sign the best talent that fits to your program.

Yes good point. Treat ST like Offense or Defense. It's a third of the game and does get overlooked when not taken serious. Dedicate a position for a STC.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Good post! I know we were||
Good post! I know we were gutted after losing McGary, Horford transfer and Morgan graduating. I just wish we reloaded a little better with a little better bigs to keep a top 25 billing is all. JB is a phenomenal coach. Maybe the best in the biz with what he has year in year out.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||I don't think anyone is||
I don't think anyone is saying JB is a bad coach by any means. I for one think he is a great coach who wrings the most out of guys. I understand that we can't always get a top 10 center or power forward. I just feel like those positions seem like an afterthought sometimes for M. Or we don't value those positions or what we look for in those positions. All I'm saying is when you load up on soft, not overly athletic, fineness type PF's and C's while the rest of your squad is outside oriented guys as well it really puts you behind the eightball when playing tournament level teams. Now maybe this isn't even an issue as Doyle, Wilson, and Wagner develop within the program. Is what it is I guess. Wish in one hand and shit in the other and see what one fills up fastest.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Sad to say though I feel like||
Sad to say though I feel like most quality teams we'll play just in the BIG will be our worst nightmare because of the size and quality front court disparity we will be faced with. (Purdue, MSU, Maryland, Iowa, OSU, Minnesota, ect)
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Ok ok. I've heard it before.||
Ok ok. I've heard it before. Maybe signing with Nike/Jordan changes the AAU pipeline? Still Dirty? So in reality being on the board of the NCAA basketball ethics coalition is a death wish in terms of recruiting? I like Beilein and I think he does more with less more times than not. I also know that he's done a remarkable job of keeping the program clean and clear of garbage. I guess we just roll with the punches and do what we can with the 2-3 star type talent we have in the front court.

|4 weeks 2 days ago||And to go along with my post-||
And to go along with my post- If JB wants to get back to being semi elite he needs to accept the fact and realize that when we were successful was when we did have some girth+talent down low. Duplicate that for god-sakes! Or imitate it the best you can. No reason after a championship game then a follow up elite eight appearance, upgraded facilities, and in a power conference we should be struggling this much to land some higher end 4/5's. Maybe he needs to look at his assistants and figure out how to teach some post to make M a little more attractive those recruits. Or find someone who can teach post and meld that in with his offensive system. He may need to really tweak some things moving forward. I'm not saying throw the baby out with the bath water but there needs to be some readjustment. Maybe I'm just crazy but that's my opinion.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||I agree this was a game we||
I agree this was a game we would've needed a small miracle to win. Especially without Levert. My problem, like I'm sure everyone else's may be is that we just haven't reloaded the gun after Mcgary. I understand JB has a certain way he recruits but man, you can't just have a bunch of perimeter finesse type guys without having someone in the middle on the block doing some kind of damage/work. We were beat because Doo has a better front court. And they were at home. And we were behind the eight ball mightily without Levert. Solid front court guys expand your room for error even if they aren't dumping in 20 a game. You put mcgary in the middle of all this and it's a barn burner to the end. JB needs to figure out how to reel in some better talent in the front court plain and simple. Diamond stone..........
|4 weeks 3 days ago||Another interesting thing||
Another interesting thing about this class is if you look at the 247 outlet, every recruit within the top 10-12 as far as the highest to lowest within that top ten to twelve all of them but maybe Bush play on the offensive side of the ball. That could change with a Gary commitment. Probably not anything too strange about it but just thought it was interesting. Given the gap between our O and D JH probably just figures that's where we need the most help. But I agree with an earlier post that it's interesting that we have so many outside type recruits. I really thought we'd reel in another O lineman. Maybe raulerson transfers. Really need one of the two LB's to sign IMO.

Could Isaac or shallman step up? I know it will be hard to find a replacement for Houma especially. And did I read correctly that he has a younger brother out in Utah? Running back I believe. Didn't see M listed as a school of possibility though.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||I agree it could get better -||
I agree it could get better - given the coaching staff and their relentless approach to getting better today than you were yesterday mentality. Players just simply were not pushed under Hoke like they are being pushed now. I will say that the Oline could stand to get a little more athletic. Just my opinion on it. Sticking/sustaining blocks and ability to kick out, locate, and get to second level defenders when pulling ect, could improve a little. I do however think that the o line will be improved just from the sure fact of most of them being together and working together more. As well as quality competition.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||Couldn't agree more! As good||
Couldn't agree more! As good as Rudock was I have an inkling that OKorn could be special. Maybe not right out of the gates but I feel like with JH and fisch and an upgraded Oline, run game, trustworthy receivers(Chesson, Harris, and even peppers with ability to pop the top off the D downfield) Butt, Bunting, Hill, Wheatley, all could play big parts in this offense and catapult OKorn into a big time spotlight!
|4 weeks 4 days ago||I feel like as the seasons go||
I feel like as the seasons go by Harbs will have a handle on, more specifically, the QB situation and be able to whittle it down to a more realistic depth chart. It seems like with it being the first year or two no one knew him and he didn't know what was in the cupboard so recruiting heavy in the QB department was paramount seeing as how it was a bit of a weak point for us in the recent past. On another note you can see the early signs of Harbaugh putting together a bulldozing type of offensive line. Isiah Wilson next year would continue to add to that construction process. I would also think green is definitely out and issac might translate to fullback. He'd have to have increased contact courage however to live up to JH's standards. Only he can turn that light on.
