- Poole as a given.
- Assume the 4 (Livers/Johns/Iggy) is a good shooter, which isn't a given but probably likely with Livers.
- Z jumps to at least an average shooter, which could maybe happen but relying on that is going to be a bad time
- Matthews jumps to a good shooter, which is probably the most likely scenario but still not a given or even likely
- Teske develops a 3 point shot, which is possible but we haven't seen it. Also the Spellman comparison is way off, Spellman shot 43% on 3.8 3P/G, Moe shot 39% on 4.1 3P/G. Spellman is a true stretch 5 by any definition.

Not true. The front page stuff is wrong, a player can enter 3 times, the third time they have to stay |

Not surprising and makes sense. Most places don't even have him as a 2nd but he has 1st round potential. Go through the process, get feedback on what to improve on, come back. |

Dakich didn't play in 2016-2017, and Donnal wasn't a tough guy to replace. We're replacing 3 major players including 2 of our 3 biggest offensive focal points and our 3 best shooters. This team will struggle early, people will freak out, and then they'll be better and everyone will talk about how they won't freak out the next time, even though they will. |

4 days 2 hours ago | I agree |
I agree that DiVincenzo is a great athlete so you can add him to the mix if you want. But Brunson, Booth, Spellman and Paschal are all average to above average athletes at best. Going back to their last title team before that with Hart, Arci, Jenkins and Ochefu, none of them were elite athletes. Obviously if you can get elite athletes you want them. I said as much as in my post. I acknowledged that being a great athlete lends itself to being a great NBA player, and by extension a great college players. So yes, of course Beilein would go after a guy like Barrett, any coach would and they'd be stupid not to. And yes a guy like Moe is a solid athlete for his size. All of those are true but none of them go against what I said. My point was you don't need to be a great athlete to be a great college player, especially in Beilein's system. Is it nice and a huge added benefit? For sure. But we've seem plenty of guys with good but not great athleticism excel in college and under Beilein, like Moe. Iggy is like Moe, a good not great athlete. My point was that's good enough to be great in college and shouldn't be a reason to be skeptical of Iggy. Also saying we got to the finals because we out athleted all our opponents is just not true. By no means did we out athlete A&M or FSU, that's just a wrong statement. We got to the finals because of our great D, weak path to the finals, great coaching and good athleticism in spite of our terrible shooting. The big concern about our team next year is shooting/shot creation. It was an issue this past year and it'll be a biggerone next year. We've seen this issue on plenty of athletic teams in the past, like FSU or A&M or Kentucky. That's like a guy like Iggy, who isn't a great athlete but a great basketball player, is necessary. |

The recent scouting report on Iggy is a great catch and shoot guy but too many pull up, off the dribble threes which he doesn't shoot well on. DeJulius is great at both, at least in HS. Whether he can be like DWalt and do that in college remains to be seen, but shooting is not a knock on him at all. |
4 days 6 hours ago | Athleticism |
Athleticism is obviously an important/desireable trait to have but non-elite athleticism isn't a huge deal in college. You look at the best player on various teams in recent Michigan memory and you have guys like Moe, Walton, Nik and Burke. None of those guys were top tier athletes yet all were outstanding college players. Look at Nova's teams in recent years, they've won 2 titles without a single lottery pick/elite athlete up until Bridges this year. Being a top tier athlete is important in the NBA, which is why you see 5 star guys at Duke/Kentucky who are mediocre to bad college players get drafted in the first round. If you're trying to project Iggy out to the NBA, I agree his lack of athleticism is limiting. In college it probably won't matter. He's still a better athlete than most guys he'll face, and a better basketball player than 95% of them. In college that's all that matters. |

I guess it depends on how define best ranked. Looking at 247 Composite 2012 was 8th nationally, 2nd in the B1G. This one is currently 16th nationally, 3rd in the B1G. However this doesn't include any updates from recent reranks (including this Rivals one) so the 2018 class will move upward. It also doesn't include the fact that Iggy is a consensus top 40 player being rated in the 70's in the composite. If you look at the average class rating, this class has an average rating of 93.98 while 2012 was 93.73. After reranks are accounted for the 2018 class should jump well north of 94 despite Iggy not being properly rated. That puts the 2018 class in a better light. |
4 days 7 hours ago | They |
They still scout him and judge his talent level the same way the would with any other recruit. Just as a rule on Rivals if you go to school in Canada they don't give you a ranking within the class. They can still judge whether you're a 5 star/4 star/whatever talent level the same they would any other recruit. In 2016 they gave out 26 5 star rankings compared the the 29 on the list this year. They hae some cutoff of what's a 5 star vs a 4 star player beyond rank in the class, and Iggy was judged to be a 5 star. |

Disagree heavily with Ace that losing Moe doesn't change the outlook of the season. Losing Moe means deciding between having 3 non shooters on the floor or taking one of your defensive stalwarts (Z or Teske) off the floor. If Teske's off the floor you lose the great defense/rebounding/rim protection that entire segment focused on. If Z's off you lose your defensive leader and PG who makes the offense go. No matter who comes on after him is going to be a big defensive drop, and even if Brooks/DeJulius are a big offensive/shooting improvement (which you'd think they would be), does that offset the defensive drop? Maybe, but I don't think you can expect that by any means. Even only having 3 shooters on the court this year was a struggle offensively. To get back up just to 3 without Moe (while also keeping the elite defense that carried this team) you have: So you either have to sacrifice the defensive eliteness, sacrifice shooting even moreso than this year, or just rely on at least one of Z/Matthews/Teske to develop into a shooter which is probably a bad idea. I agree with whoever said it above. Without Moe this team is probably a year away from being elite. Still very good, but some more early season growing pains and the ceiling is probably limited. The B1G as a whole should be a lot more even however, the bottom should be a lot better and top a lot worse, so Michigan should still be competitive for a league title. I think 2019-2020 is the year for Michigan, as long as at least 1 of Poole/Matthews are back for that year. Granted if both are gone, hopefully it means Matthews developed a shot and Poole lives up to the hype pushing the timeline forward a year. |

What? He's a RS So, played at least 21 in each tourney game, scored 18 against Kansas. Sure we shut down Brunson, but that's why Nova's so good. Take away 1 guy, they have 5 other who can wreck you. |

He's a future first rounder. He was scouted. He was getting some open looks, a lot of contested ones. When a guy's good they're just good. |

A few mocks have him as a late 2nd http://www.tankathon.com/mock_draft https://www.draftsite.com/nba/mock-draft/2018/ He also released a statement on his decision to leave but the wording makes it sound more final that he's planning on leaving. He thanks everyone for supporting him these last 2 years but he wants to "explore all his options" and that "at this time" he's not hiring an agent. If I had to guess, he's gone. |

Playing Poole in this game is going to be a big risk big reward scenario. If he's end of game Houston/Indiana/OSU-Maryland Poole he's probably good enough on O that you can deal with defensive shortcomings. If he's not though, he's probably more likely on the bench. He's an incredibly undisciplined defensive player. He gambles a lot, especially for steals, and while it pays off sometimes, a lot of times it gets him burned. Loyola has a high turnover rate and passes around the perimeter a lot so maybe it works for him, but more likely he just gets out of position and gives up open shots when he plays. Unless he gets very disciplined defensively this week (highly unlikely) or is instant offense (possible), I don't think he plays a lot against Loyola. |
3 weeks 3 days ago | I |
I agree. I said as much in the comments of the diary I posted this week. Jackson as Loyola's small ball 5 is still more of a traditional post player so I think playing Moe/Teske at the 5 is still a viable option, and probably the best one with the massive size advantage it would give us. Plus we wouldn't have to experiment with Livers/Duncan at the 5 which didn't look great against FSU, granted we have a week to practice that lineup now. I think Moe at the 5 is good enough to guard the little perimeter game Jackson has and still gives us a huge advantage on O/rebounding. Teske out there means no perimeter shooting advantage but an even larger rebounding one. He was good enough in the P&R with Z against Purdue in the BTT so he can do that on O, or just let him get position under the basket, take a shot and if it doesn't fall he probably has a good shot at a rebound. On D when Jackson's on the perimeter, have him sag off and make himself available as a help side defender/rebounder. If Jackson's trying to post up just stick Teske at the rim and good luck to anyone on Loyola not getting blocked or trying to get an OReb. If we do need to go small, I also think we can find a workable lineup with DRob/Livers at the 5 after a week of practice. |

I mean true, they can beat us. But that coach also said Nebraska played big against us and didn't switch which is so blatantly wrong it's funny. |
3 weeks 4 days ago | I don't |
I don't agree that he'll have suitors after the tournament. I mean I guess there's a chance but he's been a college assistant for 5 years and a major conference assistant for 1. 6 years ago he was in high school. He's probably another year or two away from actually being poached. |
3 weeks 5 days ago | Yeah |
Yeah it's hard for me to really tell. The only game I can find full game video of is their win @ Florida where Jackson had his best game of the year. 23 points on 7/9 shooting, 3/3 from 3. He obviously hit all his outside shots, one was curling off a screen but the other two were just straight catch and shoot. He did have 2 nice drives to the hoop as well, but a lot of his offense came from posting up smaller guys or rolling to the hoop in the P&R. From that it seems like he's quicker than I initially thought and a worse matchup for our bigs. That being said he's hit 20 3's all year so 3-3 vs Florida is misleading. Since that game, the 9th of the season, Jackson has hit 7 3's (7/34 total so 21% shooting). He hit 13 3's in his first 9 games and his hit 7 since, with only one game with multiple 3's and he's 1/4 in the tournament. He's had 67% of his shots at the rim assisted which is about the same as Robert Williams from A&M (68%) or Teske (66%). It's also a lot more than a guy like Krutwig (60%) or Moe (61%) who are more likely to post up and create themselves. He also only hass 55 non-rim 2 point shots and he hits those at a 40% clip. Without seeing film it's hard to know whether his shots at the rim coming from drives off of shot fakes, cuts to the basket, easy finishes from guards off they've penetrated, rolls in the P&R or quick scores off of post feeds. Regardless I think (key word think) his struggles shooting away from the rim (especially from 3 since the Florida game) still make him a candidate for a Teske/Moe assignment. If he does try to get his points as a roll man or back to the basket guy Moe/Teske should be have a big size advantage there and be fine. He doesn't seem to have a mid range game at all so if he's more of a perimeter guy you can let Teske/Moe sag off him and either give a 21% 3 point shooter some looks and force him to beat you there or let him drive into a well positioned Moe/Teske who have 5+ inches on him. Once again, as I've said many times, I could be very wrong here especially because I haven't seen much of him in action minus a few highlights and the 2.5 Loyola games I've seen this tournament. Putting Teske/Moe on him is something I think would be interesting but in reality we probably won't see when they go small. |
