So after 20 years of presiding over the longest playoff streak in professional sports, Ken Holland is now incompetent?

Well that's a little presumptuous. What if the world's smartest person with dark skin is not American?

Haha! My mom's uncle had one of those in his Checker (yes, Checker; no, he wasn't a cab driver).

When I got my license in 76, my dad had a 65 Chevelle that he used strictly to drive to the train station. Even though it was only 11 years old then, it was still a piece of crap. At some point the ignition switch failed, and in order to start the car you had to open the hood and bridge the contacts on the starter motor with a screwdriver (a trick my dad no doubt learned on his first job out of Michigan, as a repo man for Universal CIT). Fortunately for me, he realized the car wasn't very safe for a teenager to be driving, so we didn't have it very long thereafter, but now that I reflect on it, this was the oldest car I've ever driven.

And there are those who see OSU for what it is, a mediocre school in a crappy city, have their standards, and won't consider going to school there.
I remember telling my son the physicist when he was considering grad schools that MSU graduates more PhDs in physics than any school in the country. His response was, "Dad, I'm not going to Michigan State."

Then you haven't been reading here very well. The main argument is that universities are not in the business of paying athletes. If the athletes do not like what the universities are offering, it would spell the end of intercollegiate competition.

Every time Brian goes on one of *his* sanctimonious rants about "the sham of amateurism" I think to myself that he's arguing for the end of college football as we know it. Most distinguished institutions of higher education, including our beloved University of Michigan, don't have a word about athletics in their mission statements. Intercollegiate athletics don't drive these institutions, they are a by-product of them. And I know Brian can bluster on about how much revenue is generated, and how much coaches get paid, but the reality is that most college athletics departments either break even or generate a loss, so it's not like the universities themselves are getting rich. Aside from a modest incremental stipend, which I support, the rules will never allow college athletes to be paid, because as soon as that happens, they will cease to be college athletes.

Perfect. It's about time. A professional opportunity for those that for whatever reason want to skip college, thereby relieving pressure to admit unqualified/disinterested student athletes. This should also end the debate about compensating student athletes beyond scholarships and modest living/transportation allowances - if you don't want the deal offered through intercollegiate athletics, go somewhere else. Every other major sport offers another path to becoming a professional athlete - I'm really glad to see this.

Enrollment is down, hence the new administration. However you are very wrong about finances - the budget is balanced and they are fine, even with lower enrollment.

Rented a house on the bay in Delaware a few years back while my son was camping at Annapolis and watched those C-130s practice takeoffs and landings endlessly out of Dover AFB. Very cool aircraft! (GoWings2008, you'll also be happy to know my son ended up USAF instead of USN!)
