Brian, why is it so disappointing when a federal agency actually respects its authority instead of trying to overstep it? Maybe just a matter of perspective, depending on what side of this issue one is on.

My immediate thought is that they had a very viable second choice. When you asked for the significant increase from the initial offer, they may have thought it would be easier (and cheaper) to go with the alternative than to negotiate with you.

Homestead Resort or Grand Traverse Resort may be your best bets for this summer, given how many people you want to house. I have a big rental property on Crystal Lake that sleeps 10-12 but it's been booked for the entire summer since December. The resorts can split you up in 2-3 condos and you'll still be near each other.

Schools in Royal Oak and Farmington are meh. If schools are a priority, for the kind of money you're looking to spend, I'd suggest the southwest corner of Troy, in the Birmingham school district. You might also want to consider the western suburbs of Northville and Novi, where the schools are gigantic but highly regarded, plus you can still find parts of both those communities that are somewhat rural, if that's what you mean by "relaxed."

I might be an asshole. Having graduated - twice - and having had both parents, and both children, and my wife, and 6 out of 8 siblings and siblings-in-law graduate, entitles me to feel more "invested" than another fan who is not a graduate, or doesn't have the same connectedness. To be clear though, I don't think that makes me more of a fan, and in fact in some ways I would admit to being somewhat less, because I appreciate that the University of Michigan is so much more than just the Wolverines.

I assume you mean "hasn't" done jack. In that case, may I remind you he hasn't done jack except to keep the longest playoff appearance streak in major sports alive, while turning over the roster multiple times.

I'm not playing word games either. They recruit athletically, they recruit academically, they recruit anyone who has $12k to spend and wants the type of educational, athletic, and spiritual experience the school offers.

True, Brother Rice recruits every one of the 700 young men who attend the school, even the ones who don't play football. They have to convince 700 parents to pay $12,000 a year when those parents have an option at $0 per year.

I was in my late 30's when I finished my MBA in the evening program. I'd done my undergrad at Michigan too, so I had a ton of seniority (back when it mattered, I guess I'm not sure if it does anymore). Anyway, I was already a football season ticket holder, so I didn't need football tickets, but I did get a pair of student tickets for basketball, and it was a lot of fun. Usually I'd take one of my two young boys, who heard an earful, but the undergrads (especially the girls) were great to them.

Had a young parish priest once celebrate a Michigan victory over ND by telling the congregation on Sunday that Michigan "opened a can of whoop-ass" on them, which my young kids thought was hilarious and have never forgotten!
|30 weeks 11 hours ago||Sorry, I don't think it's||
Sorry, I don't think it's even generally true. I think that Catholics, like people of all faiths and no faith, probably favor the school they attended over all others, which was the case with my parents and with me and with my kids - all of whom are Catholic Michigan alums.
And it's not like ND is the only Catholic school around. In fact, I think there are other Catholic universities that do a much better job of following church doctrine than does Notre Dame. There are plenty of Catholics I know who favor Jesuit institutions like Boston College and Georgetown over ND.

Funny, I had nearly the exact same conversation with my son when he graduated from HS a few years back. Considered both Michigan and Northwestern (not ND). Would have supported him either way, but in my mind I could see no cost justification for the NU degree over the Michigan degree. Fortunately he chose Michigan, and it worked out well for both of us. He graduated from the LSA Honors Program, and earned himself a fellowship to another prestigious institution for graduate study.

For the same reason that Consumers Reports ratings of vehicles mean something. Not because the ratings are well-prepared, but because they are well-publicized.
FWIW, Times Higher Education is a London-based publication focused strictly on education that, in cooperation with Thomson Reuters, issues a world ranking in which Michigan is currently ranked 17.

It's made mostly out of concrete. It will be standing forever unless someone takes its down, which is expensive. That's the problem, and the same reason many large, derelict, stone or concrete buildings are still standing in Detroit decades after being abandoned (Packard Plant, Michigan Central Station, etc.).
