Getting the Department in the black again had at least as much, if not more, to do with Jason Winters, a turnaround guy from AlixPartners who joined the Department as CFO a few months before Martin did in 2000. The first budget surplus was in 2001-2.

What was "weird" about the blog post? It's a blog in support of a head coach, and encouraging fans to be patient and support the team. And do you honestly think it was in response to a single tweet? Or maybe more accurately it was in response to the thousands of posts here and elsewhere, and endless media speculation, about the future of Brady Hoke? Probably best to just let that fester, huh? IMO, it was exactly the right thing to do, and gives me hope that we WILL hold people (read Borges, Funk) accountable after the season is over.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||I don't hate Brandon||
All in all, he's doing a great job supporting and promoting the long-established values at the University of Michigan - winning with integrity, including academic integrity. He is a major improvement over our previous AD (did BM ever write a blog in support of our recruiting efforts?).
I do not agree with everything that Brandon has done, as I consider myself more conservative and a traditionalist, but there's no doubt in my mind he's the right guy for the job. If you don't agree, who would you replace him with, and why?
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Rich Rod||
was criticized for a lot of things, but I don't recall his manner of speech being among them. In fact he is many times more articulate than Brady Hoke, not that it matters much.

He made billions for his investors by managing people and making more good decisions than bad ones. Are you so self-centered that your definition of success is whether or not they made products you liked?
Whether he "practiced" or "played" for Bo, the point is that he knows a little more football than BM.

He was known for how bad it was
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Way too harsh on Brandon||
You guys are being way too harsh on Brandon. The guy has been incredibly successful running large organizations, and there's no reason to think he won't be successful running the athletics department.
Exactly what failures are you referring to over the past three years? Replacing Rodriguez, which everyone wanted him to do? Finding a staff to turn the football team around in one year and win a Sugar Bowl? Rebuilding Crisler and Yost arenas? Going to the NCAA basketball championship game last year? Finishing 2013 with our highest standing in the Directors' Cup since 2007? Raking in another cool $100 million from Steve Ross?
Do I agree with all of his decisions? Of course not. Has he made some decisions he has probably regretted himself? I'm certain of it. Everybody makes mistakes.
We are very fortunate to have a guy who played football for Bo, and went on to be a successful CEO at two different large companies, leading our athletics program. He is a gigantic improvement over Martin, who knows nothing about football and has no idea how to manage people (and is an egomaniac to boot, which seems to go with the territory).
I am with you on coaching changes being needed. But nobody's going to talk about that in the middle of the season, and rightly so. It's too soon to give up on Hoke, especially with the recruiting success, but I think you can count on Brandon to counsel Hoke regarding the performance of his assistants, something Martin never would have been capable of doing.

On the off chance that Mr. Hand ever actually needs his engineering degree, he's 100x better off having it say "Michigan" than "Alabama", I don't care how nice and helpful everyone is at Alabama.

The Daily article says, "Fitzgerald said plans for demolition and reconstruction of North Hall will be up for approval by the University's Board of Regents next month." Maybe I'm reading too much into the quote, but it sounds like they're going to build a new building for ROTC.

OK, so Brandon's annoying. But Martin was too clueless to have forced Lloyd out.
|20 weeks 3 days ago||Row more important than section||
Regarding seat location, you'll be happier (and your girls will too) if you pay more attention to row number than section number. As you get lower in the stadium, the perspective changes and your girls might have a harder time seeing all the action on the field, and you'll be climbing up and down a lot of stairs every time they want food or need a potty break. Also, that early in the season can be extremely hot in the stadium, so you'll want to be able to take quick breaks outside.
I recommend the north endzone, because there are grassy areas just outside the section entrances where you can sit and cool off. I've been in section 36, row 69 for decades for these reasons. Row 69 is only one step down from the section entrance, so you can use that as a reference point as you consider your ticket location options.

Hate to see you go, man, but understandable. Best wishes, and don't forget your alma mater!
Regarding the rest of the group, I'm not really waiting on their NBA decisions. I consider them back until they say otherwise. Maybe naive on my part.
|36 weeks 3 days ago||Serious?||
I cannot abide that guy or his arrogance. Is there anyone more rude to callers than Matt Shepard? Once Jim Rome moved to WXYT, I removed WDFN completely from my presets.
|36 weeks 4 days ago||Nope||
Not sure why you'd want to listen to that DB, but from MGoBlue.com:
"Michigan cannot stream its broadcast of any NCAA Tournament games, but the NCAA provides a free audio feed of its radio network's broadcast."
I ran into this also while trying to find a streaming broadcast of the Tigers during a World Series game - none of the regular Tiger radio network stations were allowed to stream it, probably because someone had bought the rights and was doing it on a for-pay basis.

Marquette announced in December 2010. We announced in May 2011. Our first recruiting class graduated from high school in 2011, as did Marquette's. We have had two recruiting classes - our first recruits are sophomores this year. No advantage to Marquette there. However, Michigan's club program was stellar, while Marquette's was average at best, so we should have had a little more momentum - the same momentum that allowed us to compete at the varsity level a year earlier than Marquette. Marquette is indeed a good comparison, and we should be playing better than they are. I'm not hitting the panic button yet, just saying I'm disappointed in the apparent lack of progress this year.
|36 weeks 5 days ago||Next year||
Burke of course seems a lock to leave early, but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he's the only one. Hardaway would be the next most likely, but I haven't heard any analyst say he'd be a high draft pick, and although I wouldn't underestimate his contributions during the tournament, he hasn't exactly distinguished himself as a future pro either. I think THJ has the luxury of taking his time developing his game further if he wants to. McGary and GRIII both seem to need more time at this level, and I believe that McGary has even said as much in the last couple of days, despite the breakout tournament performance.
|36 weeks 6 days ago||Not good||
This year has basically been a disaster, when our young lax team should have taken a step forward. Even Marquette in its first year has two wins, one of which was against the Air Force team that beat us. Coach Paul was an oustanding club coach and the driving force behind bringing Michigan lacrosse to the varsity level, but I am starting to wonder if he can compete at this level. Need to win 2 out of the last three games to win some confidence back, in my opinion.

That's the image of David Boston that's burned into my brain.

Who knows what he did to deserve it. Worked for basically nothing while we were club, then launched the varsity program and took it to the national championship game. What more do they want? This year was a disaster, but I'm not sure what more could have been done with all the scorers going pro, flunking out, or graduating.
|2 years 14 weeks ago||"Go Blue"||
My recollection is "GO BLUE" was originally said at the end of Temptation after a 3rd down stop, but somewhere along the line it got changed to the juvenile "You Suck." I still say "GO BLUE", but I think I am the only one in my section doing so.

"Michigan's new offensive coordinator has no experience working with a running quarterback"
I'm pretty sure Antwaan Randle-El was a running quarterback - 7,469 passing yards, 3,895 rushing yards for his college career.
