I would have tried for a career path that led to me being the Grand Poobah of the Loyal Order of the Water Buffaloes. Even if this does bring me into direct conflict with Fred and Barney . ..
Leading my tank platoon on an after midnight quick reaction force (QRF) mission in Bosnia. The report given was there were vehicles sighted heading to one of our Battalion's checkpoints and my platoon was being sent in to support.
Either the Company Commander or the Battalion S-3 (operations officer) misread the map and vectored my platoon on a road/trail that hadn't been cleared (i.e. checked for landmines). Standing orders were to never travel on an uncleared route. When I tried to question the routing, I was told, basically, to "shut up lieutenant and move out.” The pucker-factor was high as we crept along in the dark, straining our eyes for anti-tank mines (and hoping none were buried or under the snow or under the road).
We didn’t hit any mines and we finally linked up with the infantry platoon on the checkpoint. Then higher informed me that this “test mission” of the QRF was complete.
Let’s just say I was a bit pissed that we risked our posteriors on a mistake in test mission, but no more pissed than the joes in my platoon. I might have even learned some new words that night . . .
question - is the Big10 baseball tourny still double elimination at this point, or is this game winner take all? If it is double elimination, has Maryland lost a game yet (wondering if Blue might have to play three today . . .)
I agree that Memoral Day is for those who gave their last full meausre. We vets have our day - Nov. 11th. I am honored to have had a chance to have served as a citizen-soldier; but I am humbled by those whose contribution to this country was everything they had been, were, and might have been. Please remember - and honor - them.
To me the "Iambetterthanyourkids" guy came off more as an @sshat than funny. It is one thing to be cruel while being funny - it might not be your cup of tea, but it has a long tradition in comedy. And, to think of it, in football (for example Steve Spurrier).
Comming off a cruel while not being funny also has a long tradition. Think Woody Hayes, Brian Kelly, Mike Leach . . . I'm willing to bet we could come up with a looooonnggg list here . . .
I was at both the '84 and '88 Miami games as a student. I remember shuddering when, with 10 minutes left in the '88 game, the student section started singing "Hey, hey, hey - goodbye." Unfortunately my concern that the taunting might be a tad bit premature was correct (sucks to be right sometimes).
Wrenching, gut, one each.
I am blessed to have some great memories from being at the Big House over the years. They might not always be happy memories, but still great (though I can state with certainty that I far prefer the memories from the '84 game to those from the '88 game . . .)
There is too much wiggle room in the legal standard "more likely than not" in regards to Brady knowing about Deflategate for a suspension - esp. 4 games - to stand. I wouldn't be surprised if this gets knocked down to two games in a little while and then, after Brady's lawyers have a go at the front office (who supposedly had been fore-warned but didn't take any extra actions) the suspension will quietly go away.
The penalties agains the organiation though? That's another story. We know 1) the balls were at the proper inflation when tested by the refs before the game 2) the Patriots organization had control of the balls until 3) the balls were found to be under-inflated.
The only team that could be culpable is the Pats. As trustBlue pointed out - repeat offender . . .

Most Michigan thing I have ever done? Michigan was the only undergraduate school and only law school to which I applied. For me, it was Michigan or nothing!
Copyright to the underlying work (The Victors) shouldn't be a problem - the copyright to the song itself is probably in the public domain. But the copyright to this version of The Victors (a derivative work of the original song) could be a problem. U of M would need a license from the author(s) of this version (either expressed or statutory).
If the U of M Marketing Department doesn't get these grads to cut a copy of this song for an advertisement they should lose their jobs tomorrow. Let's see - Version of song people will actually listen to when ads come on during football game. Check. Singers are young, attractive, and diverse group who are all Michigan grads. Check. Best of all, singers are all recent grads who would likely work CHEAP just to get something on their resume. Check. Unless there are problems clearing the copyright for this song, I don't see a downside here
There are some Orwellian parallels to "1984", but I would posit that "Animal Farm" is even closer to what we see today. However, if you really want to have your mind blown, read "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. Huxley wrote that book in 1931 (published in 1932) but it reads like he wrote the social commentary, I mean book, last week . . .
1. The Big10 took 2 out of 3 from the SEC today. It won't shut up the SEC fans (I don't know if the energy death of the universe would do that) but the all of the rest of football-fandom will know and
2. OSU still has a chance to screw the pooch in the national champtionship game. The Bucknuts DO have some experience in such matters . . .
Is it still the case that most incoming students to U of M take the ACT instead of the SAT (or instead of taking both?)
If so, this is possible "hole" in the methodology of this study (we now have to assume the table converting ACT scores to SAT scores is accurate.)
The other obvious error is that Ohio State appears on this list in any way, means, shape or form - much less coming in at #11 (okay, that might be a tiny bit of bias on my part :)
There was some trend that was broken? Gee, you would have thought the announcers on the game might have mentioned a trend at sometime . . . :)
If anybody has a LOT of time on their hands, I'd love to see exactly how many times they repeated the "no TDs since Columbus discovered the new world" meme during the game.
It is one thing to put in your second string and still keep scoring. At that point the "it isn't our job to stop our team" comes into play.
It is quite another thing to keep the STARTERS in the game merely to run up the score. There was no way Michigan was going to score 17 points, without the ball, and a minute left. The only reason for Dantonio to keep the starters in the game was to run up the score.
NOT that it would have changed the outcome, but really? An MSU defensive back is complaining about a no-call on pass interference? There have been enough blatent holds and interference no-calls on the MSU D that even Spielman is talking about them :)
Soooooooo . . . Since winning this sucker has lower odds than did the snowball in Hades, I've moved on to my 98th alternate thing to cheer for - positive rushing yards at the end of the game. Yes, it has come down to actually hoping your team doesn't suck so much that they finsh with negative rushing yards for the second year in a row.
I'd finish this post with "when did we become Illinois" but heck - Illinois BEAT Minnesota today (something Michigan wasn't able to do . .. )
Totally fine to discuss the topic. It's a telling point of Michigan futility. But it does seem to me that bringing it up, oh, a dozen times a half should be sufficient . . . Of course, I'm not paid the big bucks to announce games so maybe I'm just wrong and you should bring it up every 15-20 seconds of game time :)
I'm wondering- when was the last time Michigan scored a TD in this rivalry. it must have been 30, or even 40, seconds since the last time the announcers mentioned it so I sort of forgot . . .
Strangely enough, I expect the topic to continue to be raised in the second half . . .

I wonder when the director is going to tell this announcer that "irregardless" isn't a word . . He has used it at least twice now . . . :)

Yes, it is quite an emotional title - taken directly from the Gettysburg Address . . .

If you like military history at all, read the Liberation Trilogy by Rick Atkinson (winner of the 2003 Pulizter Prize for history).
The books chronical the US Army in Europe during WWII. The books are
A great intersection of readability and detail.

I prefer the phrase "middle digit of friendship" myself . . .
A metaphorical tip of my hat to you for that rejoinder. Talk about being hoist by my own petard . . .
Okay, now that I’ve used up my “word of the day” calendar entries for this week, I can say “well done!” :)

So, would having Jenny Craig as an additional S&C coach be considered an NCAA violation then? :)
Two things to remember -
1. The Big10 took 2 out of 3 from the SEC today. It won't shut up the SEC fans (I don't know if the energy death of the universe would do that) but the all of the rest of football-fandom will know and

Over/under? Has to be at least around 25 . .

Generally considered a classless move.
I really hope that Michigan remembers Sparty running up the score on them. Every practice in the spring. Every workout over the summer.
And next year, if Sparty keeps the starters in to run up the score, I wouldn't mind a few personal fouls on late hits . . .
Then tell the D to take out Cook's and Langford's knees?
Funny - the band was so surprised that Michigan made a good play it took them a while to play The Victors :)
This is like watching a car wreck. You WANT to look away. You really, really do. But it is just so violent, so ugly, so gruesome that you can't . . .
Throwing the ball away does imply NOT throwing it to a defensive player, doesn't it?
Yep - Dantonio wants to embarass Michigan - well, more than Michigan is embarrassing itself . . . Calls for a reverse with the game in hand . . .
Hard to take umbridge . . .
And not even a replay to make sure . .
Funchess - STOP eating buttered popcorn on the sidelines and CATCH THE DAMN BALL
Not as a QB for sure
THIS
Even the MSU PLAYER thought it was targeting on him . .
On the plus side, we will no longer have to read any "if Hoke wins out does he save his job" posts . .
A 70 yard touchdown. Dantonio is rubbing it in a bit?
Wow
NOT that it would have changed the outcome, but really? An MSU defensive back is complaining about a no-call on pass interference? There have been enough blatent holds and interference no-calls on the MSU D that even Spielman is talking about them :)
Doesn't that say it all?
Right now, the BEST we can hope for is running play after running play to keep the clock rolling and get this sh. . . um stuff, over wth faster.
Check that box off
It is bad that Spielman keeps slamming Michigan and keep praising Sparty.
It is worse that he is right.
It really sucks to hear him gloating, however . . .
Michigan huddles . . .
Le sigh
Yes.
Says a lot, doesn't it?

Letting the clock run out on the half might have been for the best. After all, if Michigan gets the ball again which is more likely to happend -
Based on what has happened in the first half, I would have to say option #2 is much, much more likely . . .
And yes, it really does suck that playing scared is the smartest play right now . . .
I'm wondering- when was the last time Michigan scored a TD in this rivalry. it must have been 30, or even 40, seconds since the last time the announcers mentioned it so I sort of forgot . . .

Or Tom Brady? Henson? Navarre even?
This is Michigan Football 2014 = we can ALWAYS do worse . . . And it sure seems to be the way to bet . . .
