Absolute dollars

While it's great that Ann Arbor is punching above its weight for VC dollars, I personally don't believe that a region/city will be recognized as a "hub" until the absolute value is in the upper echelons of the country.

I'm not sure whether the authors used the Ann Arbor city population of ~115K or the metro area population of ~350K, but assuming the latter, that means the total VC investment into the Ann Arbor area was just under $90M. To put that into context, San Francisco and Silicon Valley generated $6.7B and $4.0B of VC investment, respectively. The #20 city on the list (Provo) received $160M of VC investment.

The B1G just approved the new rules 3 days ago. Maybe we give the video operator some leeway to change their procedures within 72 hours?

Also, not sure, but I highly doubt there were any really crucial replays In a game decided by 50 points.

No Texas/Texas A&M? Granted I may be biased having lived in Austin, but that has to be one of the most heated in-state rivalries. Plus A&M occasionally (and recently) has some decent seasons, so they're not a perennial doormat.

Agree with karpodiem, yes

Agree with karpodiem, yes you've got a great shot (although I'm hoping you were asking just for self-assurance and not evaluating your odds before deciding whether to apply - you should definitely apply).

With respect to the tuition difference between Michigan and State - granted I'm biased, but an in-state education at the University of Michigan is possibly the best value you can find in post-secondary education in the country. Yes, it's more expensive, but the opportunities that will be opened for you at Michigan will be far greater than at State.

Just look at the companies that recruit on campus at Michigan versus the ones that recruit at Michigan State - it takes much less effort to get in front of the recruiters at top tier organizations when you go to Michigan than when you go to Michigan State. Not to say that it's impossible coming from Michigan State, but you have to be much more proactive and get "luckier" when reaching out to organizations that aren't recruiting on campus.

Best of luck to you!

To be clear, that $2 million figure was from 2007 when an investor group initially acquired the website. The Cheezburger network (incl. Failblog, etc) recently raised $30 million in venture capital financing and I'm going to guess the pre-money valuation was significantly higher than $2 million.

The article itself

The article itself says:

"Well, Detroit, go ahead and let us have it: You are officially the most spitting-mad metropolis."

Methinks they have a poor numbering system and really did mean that 100th angriest = 1st angriest. Plus, there's no way Burlington, VT is the angriest city. You can't be angry in Vermont!

Just because the buyout drops

Just because the buyout drops on Jan. 1, 2011 doesn't mean that the reduced buyout is only in effect for that day. The buyout for the balance of 2011 remains at $2.5M (instead of the $4M that it was in 2010). Therefore, the 30 day notice to RR can be given at any time as long as the termination occurs on or after Jan. 1.

Also, generally speaking the way severance/minimum notification terms work, as long as you get paid for the length of time in the contract, it really doesn't matter what you're asked to do during that period of time. Often most employers prefer to just let the person stay at home and get paid since that employee may become a distraction to other employees in the company.

2005

First of all we were 7-4 in the regular season that year and lost in the bowl game. Add a cream puff to the schedule and we would have been 8-4. We also beat MSU and gave Penn State their only loss of the season (a team that finished 3rd in the final rankings). On top of that, we were beating OSU in the 4th quarter before letting Troy Smith take over.

And despite those "high notes", that year was still called the "year of infinite pain" for a reason. That type of season-long performance was the exception, not the rule. Of course, we would take those results in a heartbeat this year.

Good news from the University

Annual research spending grew 12% to a whopping $1.14 Billion this past academic year:

http://www.ns.umich.edu/htdocs/releases/story.php?id=7988

Two years in a row where research spending is above $1B. Just gives you a sense for how big a deal the University is. Not clear how much of the $1.14B was spent on leather-bound books or making offices smell of rich mahogany.

I say we get at least 3.

I thought I read somewhere that the Cass Tech guys worked out on their own this summer and didn't do a great job getting into shape. Not sure if that was just conjecture or a known fact. Hopefully Barwis can get them back into shape quickly here and that they've all learned their lesson going forward.

Jeremy Bloom?

Hmm...it seems like it might be a little more complicated than that because Jeremy Bloom was declared ineligible by the NCAA because of his skiing career.

I don't remember the details of that case, but I wonder if the NCAA draws a distinction for salaries drawn from another sport versus advertising income (which may potentially be strongly linked to another sport, but ultimately leverages the popularity of the athlete overall).

VC Here

I'm a VC down south, but always happy to see Michigan VC and entrepreneurship gaining momentum.

What I've noticed is that a key piece to the success of some regions over others is in having an entrepreneurial mindset. In places like Boston, SV and Austin, entrepreneurs are celebrated and people who leave a job at an established company to start up their own are viewed with admiration. In some places, that person would be laughed at for throwing their career away and that creates real hurdles in attracting top level talent to start up companies.

Certainly hope that Michigan and Detroit are successful in creating the right atmosphere and environment for entrepreneurial success.

Living in Austin, I would

Unfortunately, Sherrill also resigned after the NCAA found major violations, including the dreaded "lack of institutional control", in 1988. So, yes, he won 3 titles and had a winning record against UT, but he was cheating and is still considered a punchline down here in Texas.

Here's to hoping that RR won't have the same ultimate trajectory here.
