It's odd that a kid with an offer sheet like this would consider wasting his career away at a school like michigan state. if he turns out to be nfl-caliber, msu's lack of a national brand will bump him down at least one draft round (and probably more) compared to where he would get drafted if he played for Michigan. The best example of this is Jonas Mouton and Greg Jones. Both had similar size and similar skills, and they played against the same competition. Mouton was an above-average linebacker for sure, but Jones won B10 player of the year. And yet Mouton got drafted in round 2, while Jones fell all the way to round 6. Just shows what the power of the block M can do for you, and what MSU's brand cannot.

Ah yes, the sparty "we only have 1 scholarship to give and it has Parker's name on it" line, which is particularly interesting in light of the fact that they now have two commits.

I wonder if the value to Denard from this can be quantified. Aside from any money he's paid directly, it raises his profile and makes him more valuable for endorsement deals and such.

Coming off their worse run in decades, they bring in their 3rd or 4th choice for HC and he ends up being the elusive "elephant hunter". I know they have a great brand, but they are beating the elite in cfb, as well as other known cheating schools for recruits left and right. DH grew up a State fan and could go anywhere, but chooses our rival, right after a visit to tOSU? Was he looking for a counter offer? What I do know is that school and fanbase derive their whole identity from the perception that they are a football power, how far would they go to keep that in tact. To compete with the best year in and out (cheating SEC schools, tOSU, USC) you have to get a little dirty.

Part of what should make his decision easier is knowing that the program is in good hands and will continue to compete on a high level. He'll be missed, but for the returning and incoming players, its their time to shine and they're well positioned to do so.

This doesn't bother me. We've been offering ohio high school players in large numbers for years. If anything this suggests that the state of Michigan is starting to produce more D-1 talent than it has historically, which is a good thing for our program..

A lot of people (myself included) raised an eyebrow when Beilein took Spike over Amadeo Della Valle, who held offers from OSU, Zona, and Gonzaga, and was ready to commit. I have since learned not to doubt that Beilien and his staff know exactly what they are doing.

Stevens is one of the guys who gets it. All of these coaches are well compensated, and at a certain point salary increases start to matter less than being a school you love and that loves you, a school that allows you to compete at a high level (which hasnt been a problem at Butler), not uprooting your family for a 3-5 year stint in an unfamiliar city, etc.

Even if the entrance requirements are the same, your academic experience at Illinois, for example, is far more rigorous than at, say, Miss St, since at Illinois youre competing for grades with better-quality students. Coaches may be reluctant to offer a guy if they think he'll be kicked out for poor academic performance in year 2, and a recruit may not want a more difficult academic experience and may shy away from B10 programs for this reason.

Voters still give Izzo bonus points for winning a title over a decade ago and finishing fourth a handful of times since. His team is legitimately good (again) but them being top 10 has more to do with those previous accomplishments of his than it does this years team.

I was helping answer the OP's quesiton you little douche. Conway was videotapped stealing money out a fellow student's locker and some fans speculated that this was part of the reason Hoke's staff never pursued him even if he were able to get his grades up. 

I don't get it. He is a ball carrier if I've ever seen one. Maybe not a feature back but definitely someone who can give you 8-12 quality carries a game. He never really caught passes or ran routes in his college career except for some short passes out of the backfield. His best skill is running between tackles and blockers. It seems glaringly obvious that in the backfield (and perhaps occasional return man) is where he would be most effective.

He had some legal issues as I recall. Got caught stealing from a fellow student or something. Hoke's staff never pursued him after RR left.

I watched his film too and was not that impressed. I never understood the "slot receiver" talk surrounding Denard. He's a tailback and an occasional return man if I've ever seen one. His best skill is running behind blockers up the middle. Someone will find a place for him in their stable of tailbacks.

While we're at it, lets put up arbitrary rules against all kinds of harmless activities like riding bicycles, drinking grape juice, flying kites, etc. That way we can point to the rule and say,"well, there's a rule against it, so i guess you did something wrong", since whether or not there's a rule is apparently what determines whether behavior is immoral in your book.

Izzo is a good coach, obviously, but there are other good coaches as well. Much of his tourney success is attributed to his teams receiving artificially high seeding, which makes your first couple games againt cupcake opponents. Case-in-point: last year, Izzo's team was mediocore and tied Michigan and OSU for the conference title, yet his team gets a one-seed and hence a virtually guaranteed path to the S16, when all 3 teams probably should have been 2-seeds or lower. Then they went onto score the fewest points by a one-seed in tourney history in their elimination game. It's all bullshit. It isn't quite BCS-level bullshit, but its awfully close.

The issue of fault aside, it still makes you wonder what kind of success his teams would have had if they hadn't cheated. I guess we'll never know.
