As a UC basketaball fan, hard to argue that their offense has mostly been terrible under Mick. But the issue isn't entirely scheme-related. When he had to rebuild the program from almost literally zero (1--ONE--player on scholarship when he took over), he prioritized defense, since that was a quicker route to getting back on track without access to high-level recruits.
The result is that they've had a bunch of athletic dudes who can't shoot the ball. They've been able to generate plenty of open looks from the perimeter, but haven't had many, if any, pure shooters during Mick's tenure. Hopefully Cumberland will help to change that.
/end UC thread hijacking.

I really like this approach. 8 is a great number--one can envision seasons in which the 5th best team could have a plausible claim to be the best team in the land, but it's pretty hard to envision the 9th best team having such a claim.
8 teams, as you say, also lets have all 5 power conference champs plus a few wild cards. And the added wrinkle you propose eliminates the possibility of giving out one of the precious few 8 slots to the champion of a conference that has had really down year.

This is an incredibly outdated notion. UC has had good graduation rates in MBB for quite some time. And even the Huggins-era perception was driven largely by how the headline graduation rate figures were reported at that time in relation to JUCO transfers.

Gotta feel bad for him. He made a tough decision, apparently on the basis of the "trust" factor, and then one day later it becomes clear that the "more trustworthy" option that he chose is anything but that.

Same thought here. Perhaps the S&C coach counts?
EDIT: Nope, doesn't look like it: "126.96.36.199.1 Weight or Strength Coach FBS - A weight (strength and conditioning) coach may conduct flexibility, warm-up and physical conditioning activities prior to any game and prior to or during any practice or other organized activities without being included in the limitations on number of coaches."

"The bottom line question to me is how well these athletes do in life after they leave their universities, and whether they're getting the same kind of (or better) life trajectory bumps that their non-athlete peers get."
Exactly. What I don't want to see is an approach where winning at football trumps the future life prospects of the players. We know the odds of succeding at football professionally are exceedingly low, but so long as the education the players receive prepares them to do well--in football or, more likely, otherwise--after they leave, then I'd consider that a successful program.

Totally agree. He's given us a lot of great moments on the field (together with some not-so-great moments), but from an outsider's perspective he's been everything one could ask for off the field.

I'd hope that a lot of coaches could make do with the players/recruits we have on both sides of the ball. Probably just need to avoid coaches that are extremely scheme-dependent.

No doubt Saturday was miserable. But I'm still hopeful (perhaps stupidly so) that the team improves over the course of the season--enough to think that they can be contenders next year with a favorable schedule, more seasoned roster, and yet another excellent recruiting class.

Thirded, though I wonder whether there's a way to easily show someone who both was a Top 100 recruit and is a star player (e.g., Gardner). Not terribly important (as I think the key here is to show who either is or might be someone to focus on, and the current system accomplishes that well), but it might be interesting anyway.
