Americans are not unique in their distaste for diving/simulation. They are just not as familiar with the game. It might be more correct to say that diving is why many Americans are turned off by soccer.
And yes, as other commenters have suggested, it happens in basketball and hockey as well. In fact, it happens in direct relation to how big of an advantage it can potentially give your team. No matter how much a hockey player feigns injury, he can really only hope for a 2 minute power play. In basketball, where you can get opposing players ejected, it is much more prevalent. And of course, in soccer, where penalties are even more severe, it is rampant. This will not change unless the rules change.
Oh, and here's this...

Zirin has done a lot of important work shedding light on corruption in the NFL and NCAA. You may not like his politics, but to say he does not deserve to be taken seriously over something like this is unwarranted in my opinion.

Hopefully, a cast member will go off script, or break character--and that's the only time it really gets interesting.
So anyone saying that SNL isn't funny anymore--or talking about the golden years--needs to get over themselves and just enjoy mindless television for what it is...mindless television.

Oh well, we also won a lot of close games, and I'm sure the Buckeyes and Sparties are lamenting their winnable losses as well. It just would've been really nice not to have to share the title with those boobs.
Enough being an asshole. This one is huge. Especially for the seniors.
|4 years 48 weeks ago||That video||
That video is quite amusing, but in defense of soccer, a lot of those floppers were cautioned or ejected for their theatrics (apparent in the video). I have long held that the only reason you see so much flopping in soccer is because, if you pull it off, it can give your team an incredible advantage on attack (free kick, penalty kick), or bail you out if you've lost possession in a dangerous area. In a sport with often limited scoring opportunites, and where possession is so important, these advantages can make all the difference.
Another factor is that you have essentially one referee making the final call on fouls that occur across the length of a massive field of play (usually 120 x 70 yards or so). So, if there actually is illegal contact, some players will take a tumble or embellish to ensure the referee sees it and it is called. Referees are also easily swayed by the reactions on the field and emotions of the crowd, and players know this. When you see a player feigning injury, he is trying to get the offender carded, which can also give your team a huge advantage. Also, since the clock doesn't stop (for anything) in soccer, it is also a timewasting tactic.
If all this turns you off to soccer, that is totally fine, but please don't call it soft (not that anyone did, but people do). If you actually watched a match, you'd see these guys take some pretty hard shots and tough it out for the full 90, with only a 15 minute breather. And also don't act like flopping doesn't occur in other sports, because it happens all the time in basketball, and increasingly in hockey. The only reason it's not to the same extent is because it doesn't provide the same advantage, but whenever it can provide that advantage, you will see it.

|5 years 11 weeks ago||all I'm saying||
All I'm saying is that Hoke should've brought in a spread guy to run this offense. If I recall correctly, last year (as a first year starter), Denard Robinson set Michigan and NCAA records running and throwing. In one offseason, Borges turned our legit Heisman candidate into "uhh, let's see what Devin can do."
Our offense, lead by a second-year Denard Robinson would've been any (spread-minded) o-coordinator's wet dream. Instead we are stuck in what appears to be Brady Hoke's confused wet manball dream, and I don't like it.

|6 years 1 week ago||Not that anyone cares,||
Not that anyone cares, but I supported Rich Rodriguez and disagreed with the decision to fire him. Some of the things that I will miss the most are exactly what many people have been complaining about for the past three years.
I liked that each game on the schedule was equally important to him, and I'm glad he didn't act like Michigan vs. OSU is single greatest rivalry in all of sports. Most of the sports world (emphasis on world) doesn't give a shit about American football...let alone college football.
I also liked that Rodriguez's teams did not have a sense of entitlement. Almost everything out of Hoke's mouth at the presser today came off like it was designed to placate the loudest and most annoying segment of our fanbase. I damn near puked when he emphatically declared: "THIS IS MICHIGAN"...three or four times. No, Mr. Hoke--your hiring makes it official--this is Notre Dame. (Okay, maybe not, but seriously...can you name another place where people think like this?)
That being said, Rich Rodgriguez was fired, and I'm over it. Brady Hoke is our coach and I support him. I only request that people not use terms like "the RR era," because I think it's misleading and, well, three years is not an era. "The RR experiment," would be more fitting, but even then, that's with the understanding that we never got to test the hypothesis.

He also concussed Mike Williams on numerous occasions and although I'm not sure what happened to Jared Van Slyke's clavicle...I SUSPECT GERG!.

What would have happened differently if you hadn't accepted a 2-6 conference record in 2008? Nothing? Just checking.
I mentioned this in another thread, but I think it bears repeating here. It's really annoying when sports fans criticize a coach's performance by saying it is unacceptable to them. You can criticize RR (fairly) all you want, but unless you are Dave Brandon, please stop acting like your personal standards of acceptability mean anything to anyone.
|6 years 12 weeks ago||Oh thank God||
Oh thank God you're willing to lead us through another painful transition...only...who the fuck are you, and why should I care?
I'm really sick of all the "I've had enough" posters because they lack even a modicum of self awareness. No one cares if you've had enough. It doesn't matter. Stop being such a whiny bitch. And remember, no matter how much you love sports or college football, in the end, it's totally meaningless. That's right, SPORTS ARE TOTALLY MEANINGLESS. They are for fun (and $), but when fans start acting like little whiny bitches and demanding to see a HC and his entire staff fired just to be placated (like what they think or feel counts for anything), it is not fun. It's just a bummer. We may not be ND under Weis, but we are quickly turning into ND fans under Weis, which is infinitely worse.
My advice: get a hobby. Find something with meaning in which to have a passion for. When so much of your happiness is relying on the success of a bunch of 19-year-olds on an athletic field, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Every time. Stop taking yourself and Michigan football so seriously. It's just a game.

|6 years 28 weeks ago||I agree about the flopping.||
I agree about the flopping. Soccer is plenty exciting...it's the flopping I don't appreciate. Unfortunately, I don't think it will change unless FIFA and/or domestic leagues start fining, or even suspending players for simulation or embellishment. I've seen a few yellow cards given for diving at this World Cup, but (as we all know) the refs don't always get it right. After the game, I'd like to see some of the more egregious offenders get punished.
And, as far as I know, play does not stop in soccer for an injury (unless that injury is the result of a foul). This may have changed after Marc-Vivien Foe's death, I'm not sure. Anyway, it never really did anything to stop players from diving since, even if the opposition had possession of the ball in an advantageous situation, the sportsman-like thing to do was to kick it out of play so that the injured player (faking or not) could receive treatment.
In my opinion, the problem is the tremendous advantage you can give to your team by flopping. I've seen referees blow really late whistles, and even brandish a card based on a player's theatrics and the reaction of the crowd. By flopping, you can get an opposing player cautioned, or even sent off. Furthermore, if you are at all within striking distance of the goal and are about to lose possession of the ball, why not take a tumble? In a match with few scoring opportunities, a set piece can mean the difference between a win and a loss. This, of course, is why you see so much flopping in the penalty box, but you can even be bailed out of a defensive error by flopping.
Again, I can't think of anything other than fining players after the match has been played. That, and getting better referees. I think this would solve some of the other problems people have (like with offside). Personally, I like the offside rule, and I love nothing more than seeing that gorgeous pass/run that beats the trap. What drives me crazy is when the linesmen get it wrong and I'm left wondering what could have been if the play hadn't been incorrectly whistled offside.

|6 years 28 weeks ago||What everyone seems to be missing||
What everyone seems to be missing (even though it was mentioned in the article) is that having the best athletes in the world doesn't mean shit if you don't develop the skill. Our soccer players aren't lacking in athleticism. They simply lack the skill and creativity necessary to compete with the Brazils and the Spains of the world.
We must stop thinking like American sports fans. In football and basketball, we have rolls for big guys with little to no ball skills...and creativity is only expected out of a few positions.
In soccer, everyone on the pitch (including the keeper) has to possess vision, creativity, instinct and at least a modicum of skill on the ball.

Well, I think that's because if an MGoBlogger doesn't like video games, he or she is probably an adult, and probably has at least something going for him/her in life, so he or she does not feel the need to click on threads in which they have no interest and do nothing but detract from the discussion.

|6 years 31 weeks ago||Unfortunately, I had to miss the end of this one.||
Unfortunately, I had to miss the end of this one. Do we know for certain that a foul was called on an American player? From the replays I've seen, it looks as though the ref goes to blow the whistle before the free kick is taken. If this is the case, he probably did so in order to warn the Slovenian players about their holding.
I still think it's a shockingly bad call, but it does explain why the goal was disallowed. If it came after the whistle, it can't stand.
EDIT: Never mind. If this theory is correct, the referee should have at least allowed the free kick to be retaken. However, the fact that the referee is a moron has been well established.

I agree, the vuvuzelas are annoying, but so is John Harkes. I've never liked him as a commentator. Martin Tyler, on the other hand, is excellent. Isn't there anyone else on the ESPN payroll they can pair him with? What's Seamus Malin doing these days?
|6 years 33 weeks ago||Fun fact: BP began as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company,||
Fun Fact: BP began in the colonial era as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, later the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. It was the result of a concession granted to William Knox D'Arcy by the Shah of Iran under the thumb of his imperial overlords in Great Britain. The company was threatened briefly by the election of the nationalist Mossadeq, but a CIA orchestrated coup--with support from the British--returned the shah to power. BP was allowed, once again, to virtually monopolize Iranian oil. The shah was finally removed by the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

|6 years 34 weeks ago||Oh Yeah!||
The track Ecclusiastics on that album always makes me scream "Oh Yeah!" I need to check out that Carnegie Hall performance now.
Of the live Mingus I've heard, I'd have to go with at Antibes as my favorite. Eric Dolphy was a genius.

|6 years 36 weeks ago||First of all,||
First of all, don't link to that website again...ever.
Secondly, not only is Lebanon a diverse place, but Hizbullah is a multifaceted organization. It's not simply a terrorist organization (in fact, the EU does not consider it a terrorist organization at all), it's a political party. Their aim isn't "global jihad," rather, the organization was founded to resist a foreign occupation and, therefore, it has earned the support of many Lebanese, not just the Shi'ites of the south that they purport to represent.
However distasteful you may find their politics, I don't think it's fair to lump them in with groups like al-Qaeda and other "fundies."
Thirdly, I think this is relevant:
Note: Sorry if this comment was at all political. I tried my best to stick to facts and to keep my opinions to myself.

Do not +1 me.
|6 years 40 weeks ago||I don't agree||
I don't agree with any of that, but I will say that this Red Wings team is beginning to remind me of the '05/'06 Detroit Pistons. You know, the team that had just made two consecutive trips to the finals, winning it all the first time and coming up just short in game 7 the next...the team with a bunch of veterans that started playing with a sense of entitlement. That team was eliminated in the conference finals; hopefully the Wings can make it that far.

|6 years 40 weeks ago||I wasn't at the spring game,||
I wasn't at the spring game, but I don't think we should rush to name Denard the starter at QB. Tate may not currently be injured, but it's likely that his injury hindered his development significantly. Give him a few more months of mental and physical preparation (with Barwis), and the competition at QB will heat up again in August.
Right now, it seems as though Tate is at least as good as he was last year. If Denard looks even better (not-even-close better, as some have said), then we should all feel pretty good about the offense in 2010.

I said that he has underperformed in international play (friendlies included), and he has. I understand that Messi was young, and only started one game in World Cup 2006 (and didn't play at all against the Ivory Coast or Germany), but you also must understand that the vast majority of international games are not World Cup matches. Messi has made 43 international appearances, and only 3 of those were in a World Cup.
Perhaps I should have specified, as I was really only talking about the last year or so (under Maradona) anyway. FWIW, I think Messi is the best player in the world.
|6 years 41 weeks ago||Okay,||
Okay, that's not bad...but, believe me, no one is going to be listening to the Weakerthans in 90 years. That "indie" trash is ephemeral.
If you've ever listened to jazz...and I mean really listened to jazz...you'd never need to create another thread on a sports blog looking for more middle class suburban white kid bands to listen to.
I thought I was doing the OP a favor.
(EDIT: It was stupid on my part to say anything about race. Sorry if I offended anyone. I don't apologize for anything else though.)

|6 years 42 weeks ago||My apologies||
My comment wasn't directed at you, it was just a general remark that seemed to follow your comment logically. Anyone that blamed Sparty got negged severely, while those ripping on "Ypsi kids" (read: black people) were encouraged to continue their thinly veiled racism.
Example: Below, someone identified some delinquents he spotted outside the window of his Ann Arbor residence as "Ypsi kids." He did not ask them where they were from, rather, thanks to what he's "learned from living there," he merely had to observe their skin color to conclude that they didn't belong, and were therefore from Ypsi.
|6 years 42 weeks ago||Yes, or||
Yes, or we can just blame the black kids...that doesn't seem to bother anyone.
Excuse me, "Ypsi kids."
|6 years 42 weeks ago||Ummm...||
The mile was first defined in Britain by an act of Parliament. That's why the Imperial system is sometimes called the English system, and things like feet and yards are known as English units.
So, I'm sure they've heard of a mile in England.

|6 years 47 weeks ago||Rereading my comment,||
Rereading my comment, I can see how it came off as douchey. I was merely expressing my surprise that one, especially a journalist, could feel that the Freep case is exceptional. I can provide far more egregious examples that occur regularly, but I'm afraid that I would run the risk of making this discussion political. I think we can both agree that is to be avoided.
I understand your point though. You work hard to preserve your journalistic integrity and to defend the reputation that those in your profession have in your Woodward-and-Bernstein fantasies. Alas, a particularly careless paper comes along and seems to vindicate those "tangential iconoclasts" whose criticisms you've fought so hard to refute.
The only thing is, I am vindicated every time I look at a newspaper or turn on the television. For a long time I was not able to do so without feeling disheartened, but I have been desensitized.
|6 years 47 weeks ago||"and I post a lot"||

|6 years 47 weeks ago||Really?||
It's the Freep's jihad that you'll have a hard time living down as a journalist? Really?
There are much more important things being lied about, covered up, ignored or misrepresented in the American press every day.

|7 years 15 weeks ago||I was pissed||
I was pissed for about 20 minutes before I remembered that this young team played like shit for most of the last two games (on the road in hostile environments) and almost came up with a win each time. Rich Rod keeps saying that this team isn't good enough to play poorly and win, but boy are they close. I see great things for them in the years to come.
Oh, and the people whining about Rich Rod going with Denard over Tate on our final drive remind me a lot of the charlatans who were complaining about Beilein's decision to bench Manny Harris in OT against (none other than) the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Those people shut the fuck up after Manny Harris and the Wolverines came out and squashed Purdue the following game.

We played our worst game of the season (at least offensively), stinking it up for 55 of 60 minutes of regulation. State plays arguably their best game of the year and manages to squeak out the W in OT...in E. Lansing. Way to go, Sparty.
Yes, it hurts, but I don't plan on having this feeling too many more times for the remainder of the Rodriguez era.
