I had the exact same "oh shit" reaction when I heard "family matter." Not necessarily because I am a midwesterner like Hoke or Erik_In_Dayton, but more because I was aware of the pending case against Gibbons. In my mind the the phrase is used exactly as you describe, to imply personal issues that could be embarrasing if aired in front of the press. Now in my, albeit cynical mind, the phrasing as well as the prior information availble screamed that Gibbons was in some shit regarding his sexual conduct.

I was contemplating writing a long diatribe on why we need to report on stories like this, but I felt like it could be said much more succinctly. You did it for me, thank you sir.

Should the athletic departments impose an open market on addtional benfits based upon contributions? I dont think so because that is entirely too drastic and unreasonable given the current state of college athletics. On the other hand if Jabrill Peppers jerseys start selling like hotcakes in Ohio is it unfair for him to have the right to negotiate for a portion of those revenues?

How would your enjoyment of your favorite musical on Broadway change if you knew that the actors were not being compensated in a fair manner for the talent that they provide?
And to your point on "the bulk of the revenue"; just because I don't generate the bulk of the revenue for my employer doesn't mean my compensation for contributions should stay the same as revenues increase. At the very least, if my employer disagrees with my desire for increased compensation I should be able to have a discussion with them to discuss the issues at hand.

1. When Coach Alexander mentions a large playbook he is not just refering to inbounding the basketball, its more about having the confidence and knowledge that all your players can run different schemes from one possesion to the next.
2. "We do a lot of standing waiting for a three." ......That is just false. There are always people moving and screening to create open looks, I dont know what team you are watching.

The north facade of North Quad (formerly the Frieze building) is still the same. I remeber the push to keep the facade by townies and alumni alike leading to the strange demo/constuction where the facade was the only thing standing for months on end.

So SIAP, but I think one thing to consider is if you truly have your heart set on math/science/engineering think carefully of who you have write your letters of recommendation. For instance, just because your english teacher was your favorite teacher of all time and he/she would write the most bitching letter of recommendation doesn't mean they are the best to ask. Seek out someone who knows your aptitude and dedication to the core classes required for your desired major. Letters of recommendation and essays are the elements that make you more than just a list of stats and activities on your application.
For a personal example I applied to the engineering school with an interest in Chemical Engineering and got one of my letters of recommendation from my AP chemistry teacher, who also happened to be a former chemical engineer at Dow Chemical before she switched professions. I applied as soon as I could (which I strongly reccomend BTW) around the beginning of October, and I got my acceptance letter just in time to share the news over Thanksgiving dinner with my family.
I should disclose that my situation should not be considered typical as I am a townie with a long history of family who went to Michigan, as well as other connections through growing up here to the university.
Anyway good luck and Go Blue!

As a townie I have always loved the history of Ann Arbor.
In regards to moving the operations to another part of campus the rumor of relocating to NCRC (as guessed a few posts above) has been floating around but it is very much just an idea. Granted the people having these ideas have power and sway within the university but an idea can be summarily squashed by many internal political forces.

And the buildings adjacent to the railroad tracks actually pre-date Michigan Stadium.
Hoover Ball and Bearing was opened in 1913 well before the Big House was built in 1927.
