The OL disaster and class of 2010 would have imploded anyone - including Saban for a year or two IMO. But better coaches would have recovered from that and mitigated it by 2014.
Also the inability to get JUCOs hurts us badly in this case and next year with QB for example. 90% of schools out there would have infused 3 JUCO OL 2012ish preparing for 2013, and 90% of schools this year would have a JUCO QB out there to compensate for having Russ and Shane as your 2 best options. Unfortunately we cannot.

When I did my coaching diary on Patterson I thought he was basically Beilein of football who did not have to move from job to job to move up (unlike John). Instead his team got moved up through various conferences so he had a Beilein like experience without having to change jobs.
The other guy who is football Beilein is Bill Snyder. So those are the 2 football equivalents to Beilein. Unfortunately one is headed towards 80 years old and the other already has a NC contender in a conference that does not have Bama impeding him and sits in the Texas gold mine.

Well if Hackett is the full time hire his prehire evaluation period is 48 hrs. And his body of work is 30 days.
Is that better than a 60 day evaluation period? And bodies of work that range from 5 to 20 years of other candidates?
Hackett is the epitome of a rushed hire.
Again, this is not that difficult. Organizations lose people from the top of their chart all the time due to any number of reasons. You dont take 18 months to find a replacement.
|4 hours 47 min ago||"But if Schlissel asks him to||
"But if Schlissel asks him to stay on as the true permanent AD I don't really feel its selfishness if Hackett accepts the job because he thinks he can do it well."
Well I will disagree with you here on this point. If you are thinking of the greater good, you tell Schlissel you are honored for the offer but you see a landscape of 10-12 highly qualified, experienced AD canddiates who in this specific job bring more to the table and you don't take the job yourself. You continue to work to hire one of those 10-12 guys.
Just because a job is offered you dont take it "because I think I can do well". Almost every CEO type thinks he can do everything well. Thats part of what it takes to be a CEO culturally in a big business - a lot of self confidence.
|5 hours 2 min ago||Ok let me rephrase - if he||
Ok let me rephrase - if he takes the job he is selfish when there are a bevy of qualified national candidates he could be hiring.
Would he hire someone with no experience to have run Steelcase? That's what he would be doing by taking this job.
|5 hours 5 min ago||While I agree with your||
While I agree with your thought process it should not be a damn 180 day process to hire an AD. There are CEOs of S&P 500 companies hired in 90 days of evaluation or less. It's ridiculous. It speaks to a bloated organization - which granted most public universities are but UM is making it seem like hiring an AD requires the expertise of sending a man to the moon.
|5 hours 9 min ago||WHile a possiblity, feelers||
WHile a possiblity, feelers to real ADs such as Long, Bates, et al were sent out as early as 2nd week of October if you believe the rumblings via backchannels. I mean you'd have 60-75 days to evalute candidates such as that group and getting one hired by mid December shouldnt be that friggin difficult. These guys are experienced, know the business, you have to talk to them and get a feel for them personally and the ones who are not UM graduates (such as the Sooners AD) you have to see how they fit culturally but aside from that their track record is out there to evlaute for anyone.
If you put Hackett in a room with 50 ADs he'd not be one of the top 10 hires. That's the rub.
Same for Hoke with 25 other head coach candidtes in 2010-2011. If Hoke had been a DL coach at Oklahoma rather than Michigan he would never have been hired. Same for Hackett now - he has no qualification other than UM alum.
|5 hours 14 min ago||It was specifically stated in||
It was specifically stated in the press release during the Brandon firing he was an interim and had no intentions of full time job.
But this is Michigan fergodsakes.
Lame. No offense to Hackett but you have zero experience in this realm. Zero. I find this extremely selfish on his part.
|15 hours 10 min ago||Both Donnal and Kam showed||
Both Donnal and Kam showed their first real signs of contributing. Donnal is soft yes and will remain soft but had some nice vision out there as a passer and looks like a guy who will improve. Kam had his first game as a Wolverine where he made more than 1 shot. So those 2 guys along with Doyle are the 3 guys I see contributing meaningfully out of the freshman/RS freshman. Still holding out hope that Dawkins will be giving us 5-7 minutes a night by February but thus far he has not been a big piece of the rotation.
Wilson is going to get eaten alive by Big 10 physicality and on most Michigan team's would be redshirting. He and Sanderson need a year together. And MAAR is basically insurance on a catastrophic injury to one of the 3 guards.
Again to put in perspective that was a team tonight that didnt play 1 freshman in their top 7. They had 5 SR/JR + 2 SO. A team that lost 1 major piece from a 29? win team last year. And it was a matchup of 2 even teams. We looked a lot worse last year at this time with what probably was a team with more NBA talent on it.
TL;DR In Beilein we trust.

By the time they fly home I imagine they wont get to their houses/dorms until 4:30-5:00 AM either way.
Not sure why either game was so late - first game should have been a 7 PM tip and start the second game 9:15 PM.
|15 hours 22 min ago||There were times vs both||
There were times vs both Oregon and Nova he looked like he could get to the rim at will. I was hoping he'd do it more, esp when the Nova big man was out.
|15 hours 24 min ago||Also lets give credit to the||
Also lets give credit to the other team - in today's preview I was astounded at how many steals Nova got but it makes sense now. UM is one of the better possession teams and they made us look silly for a 15 minute stretch with their pressure. Their D is very good. And Ennis is a bad ass - some serious talent in that family. I have to imagine he is first team Big East.
Would love a rematch in the Elite 8!
|15 hours 31 min ago||He tried to recruit 2 of the||
He tried to recruit 2 of the country's top centers last year and was rejected by both. You are making it sound like he is not trying to get these players. He even said after the UK game we need more players who play above the rim. Players have to want to come here - he cant wave a magic wand and create these players.
That's the b**** about Mitch leaving and Horford leaving. You can bet the people from Duke Kansas Carolina and the like are using that against UM. Mitch with 1 full healthy year of displaying how a big man could thrive in this system would have helped Beilein tremendously. Instead the meme of this offense is built around guards/wings (which it is) and an elite big man won't thrive can be portrayed. You heard Dakich - the culture for most people now is understandably how do I get to the league quickly. You can make the case for guards and wings at least that this offense gets you to the league quickly. Mitch basically had a 10 game stretch and that's all we have to offer right now at the 5 for recruits to buy.
Last point, it is difficult to find good big men. And if you are lucky to get 1 you might only get them for 1 year in the current NCAA. See Noah Vonleh who was fine but nothing special at Indiana and only lasted 1 year. Wilson is basically the type of project you are going for if you dont land a Zimmerman and he not the type you insert into the lineup as a freshman - its just bad timing this year with Mitch and Horford both leaving.
|15 hours 48 min ago||Lost in this loss was Caris||
Lost in this loss was Caris had 4 shots tonight of Kobe type quality. Not saying he is half of Kobe but these were sick NBA baskets that were unstoppable. Awesome to see.
|15 hours 51 min ago||He played a lot better||
He played a lot better today. Again this is his 5th college game -- big men are usually slow to develop. Mitch struggled for 15 games his first year and was a top 20 talent. He is not going to be an imposing physical threat but he brings other talents. You mix Thunder (Doyle) and Lightning (Donnal) and its a nice mix - these 2 are just babies.
|15 hours 54 min ago||Also have to say a game like||
Also have to say a game like this with Horford giving you 15 minutes, I think we win. Max could not match up inside and at times it is unfair to ask him. I realize he is probably in a better offense for him down at UF but its a bummer for us as a program not to have that experience, and bulk.
|15 hours 56 min ago||If anyone other than Donnal||
If anyone other than Donnal had got that inbounds pass I think we win.
But bigger picture this was a very good game for us - we played horrid in the 1st, and you can see why Nova gets so many steals. Our ball possession right now is not at levels of the prior 2 years, lots of turnovers to pressure.
But this was a team of 5 SR/JRs and 2 SO against our 2 JR 2 SO and a bazillion freshman. We will be better in March, right now these are 2 very evenly matched teams and we are WAY ahead of where we were a year ago at this time when we looked lost at times with Morford at center, Mitch trying to be healthy, and a freshman PG. Very encouraging.
Thoughts on freshman - DJ Wilson should be redshirting, he is not physically ready for the Big 10. We saw that tonight. Chatman had some good signs tonight. MAAR is basically just insurance policy. Basically it seems like Chatman and Doyle will be the 2 main contributors this year from this class and maybe Dawkins will come in later in the year as he has the physical makeup to contribute. WIlson needs a year with Sanderson and 15-20 lbs.
Nothing to be unhappy about - one made basket or miss by Nova during 40 minutes doesnt change anything other than our feelings the next 60 minutes. Those were 2 evenly matched teams and most likely the most intense defense (outside of Syracuse) we will face this year.

Speaking of assistants I saw a question to Nick B today on the assistants in terms of has he ever interviewed them. He said Hoke only makes coordinators available. Position coaches are totally off limits. When asked how common that is, he said very uncommon.
It is not a huge deal and if we were winning no one would care but it speaks a bit to a lack of accountability.
The comment about Marcus losing chemistry is a bit funny. Strange things happen when the best player in college football leaves your side of the ball and indeed your unit. Everyone else tends to get more exposed - special players make everyone around them better.
Saban and Harbaugh are ruthless with assistants - if it doesnt work you get kicked to the curb. Ask Nuss. Only exception seems to be the Bobby Williams clause. Hoke is like Carr - he has made the position coaching a place to grandfather people and keep personal friends. Not saying they are all bad coaches but I see a lot of very average guys out there. They were trying to push Mallory out last year in a very UM / Carr way - find him another job rather then fire him. When it didnt work out, he just stayed here rather than upgrading. Funk, Jackson, and Mallory are weak links.
Saban to UM is the nonsense that has other fan bases laugh at us i.e. "they think everyone on earth wants to coach at UM." Saban basically has a group of 5 schools where he could go (Texas, USC, Bama and probably UF/FSU) in tier 1 and everyone else is not in the same league.

|1 day 3 hours ago||The announcers went for the||
The announcers went for the easy comparison with Doyle being a poor man Mitch because hey...they are both white Michigan centers (expect more of that this season if Doyle continues to play well) but it's not a very good comparison outside of motor. In fact Doyle seems to have a game a lot more like Morgan but with the potential for more offense as time goes by (had a sweet baby hook a few games ago).
It is often forgotten by Morgan's trips to the wilderness in his junior, early senior year but he started off his Michigan career in very nice fashion as a freshman. If Doyle can get anywhere near Morgan's freshman (within 20%) numbers we should be very pleased considering Doyle did not have the benefit of a redshirt year.
Morgan - 24 minutes a game, 63% FG%, 9.2 PPG, 6.5 rebounds.
Morgan never got back to those figures in his last 3 years @ UM although the last 15 games of his senior year he was playing in that sphere.
Again, 1 game so let's not jump the gun and he will have nights he plays 7 minutes and goes 1-4 with 4 fouls but you can see a motor there that will give you an honest effort every night which as a fan is so fun to watch.
Also it is going to be nice to have a guy like this for 4 years- doesnt have elite NBA type athleticism like Mitch did so he might be a Frank Kaminsky type without the outside jumper Frank has. In the modern NCAA you almost need to have 2-3 guys like this who are going to be around their entire career in your rotation to provide some damn stability unless you are UK who can funnel 5 star 1-2 and dones constantly.
|1 day 3 hours ago||With Kam struggling I wouldnt||
With Kam struggling I wouldnt mind seeing 6-8 minutes a night of Donnal at the 4 just to see how he does - at least vs big teams. He looks a lot more like a stretch 4 in an Evan S type of way then a 5, at least in terms of physicality. Supposedly he has a decent 12-16 ft jumper. That of course assumes Doyle can play 20-23 minutes and stay out of foul trouble which some nights won't happen. Donnal can still then rotate over to 5 for 10 minutes a night as well.
|1 day 3 hours ago||As I wrote in OP I used the||
As I wrote in OP I used the box score of the Bucknell game to look at how they play in a close game. I assume UM will be a close game so its the best mirror for how they'd rotate.
The VCU game was a blowout in the 2nd half when those last 2 guys got more time than in a close game. Vs Bucknell the 8 and 9 guy got a combined 9 minutes (Booth 5, Reynolds 4). That doesn't mean they wont play more than 9 minutes tonight but if they are not getting a lot of time vs Bucknell I'd doubt they'd be playing a lot v Michigan. Those 2 also got a combined 4 minutes in game 1 (all by Booth) vs Lehigh which was Nova's 2nd closest game.

Thanks. The 2 line items that are cause for worry are the steals at 10 per game (wow - they out havoced VCU) and offensive rebounds.
We gave up 18 to Oregon and Oregon didnt have a nearly 7 foot center.

|1 day 10 hours ago||The only "big" lineup we've||
The only "big" lineup we've had is Max at 5 and Wilson at 4 for a few minutes in that game Max went nuts.
And really Max is a 6'7/8 center so its not really big. If you see Doyle/Donnal at 5 with Wilson at 4 that is as big as we can go with current positions. I'd be curous to see some Doyle at 5 and see how Donnal does as a stretch 4. I think at his core he is a 4 and not a 5.
|1 day 15 hours ago||For teams we are unfamiliar||
For teams we are unfamiliar with it is going to be helpful to look at size of their lineup as our defensive rebounding was pretty awful. Cut Oregon's offensive rebounds in half and this was a blowout. Part and parcel of the small lineup we are running out there for much of these games. And Oregon is not particularly large.
Quick look at Nova shows a 3 guard lineup. Which is good for us. Of their 9 starters vs VCU only 4 are forwards/centers and 1 had minimal minutes. But 2 of those 3 are pretty large guys - one is 6'11, and another while 6'6 is 255 lbs (reminds me of Texas a bit there). The other forward is 6'7 and 235 so they are going to be tough to move.
I will be interested to see what Beilein does with this 6'11 dude - I assume Donnal continues to start but only Doyle seems to have the bulk to really match up. Donnal seems 'svelte' for his size even if he doesnt weigh much less than Doyle.
|1 day 16 hours ago||Doyle has that energizer||
Doyle has that energizer battery thing going that is going to be SO DAMN annoying for opponents for the next 4 years. I can already hear the complaints in Columbus Madison and EL. "That sweaty guy again! Can't anyone stay on him. BOX HIM OUT! HE IS A 3 STAR WHO CANT EVEN JUMP!! COSTELLO!!!!"
|1 day 16 hours ago||Giving up that many offensive||
Giving up that many offensive rebounds a game is not a winning strategy long term. Not content with Kam but lets give him 10-12 games before getting all depressed.
I would like to see Donnal as a 4 for a bit as I think he is not a natural 5. Dont think we really ever play 2 bigs together (Doyle at 5, Donnal at 4) but would be curious how it works - Donnal is more of a pick and pop shooter anyhow so he fits the stretch 4 profile.
If we cut the offensive rebounds conceded in half we win by 15 tonight. It was brutal.
