Oh for Lions fans Matt Stafford is probably on the Philip Rivers career track i.e. HOF via stats inflation if not a winner. Dude's only 28 - he has 30K yds in his career, tracking to 60K+ when all said and done. TD to INT ratio of 1.75, i.e. better than Favre and in Big Ben radius. Career 86.0 rating, 61.5% completion ratio. On paper he is Brett Favre without the winning DNA... and stuck in a loser franchise.

Stats aren't everything and being on a non stop winner like the Patriots helps but certainly some amazing QBs of late. A lot like the big 3 in men's tennis about 4 years ago.
I feel like Brady and Rodgers are ahead of Big Ben and stats bear it out esp on TD to INT ratio but all 3 should be 1st ballet HOF. Brady and Rodgers are in a class alone in terms of protecting the ball.
Brees is right up there with the Mannings of the world but he but unfortunately has had some awful defenses paired with him in his career.
Rodgers career stats hurt by sitting behind a legend his first few years so he didn't start as early but peak Rodgers is as good as anyone I bet. Sort of like peak Young vs longevity of Montana in the Rodgers vs Favre debate. Rodgers protects the ball MUCH better than the gunslinger of the 90s in GB. Rodgers is only 33 so if he can maintain this for 4 years or so he is right up there all time.
As for the 3 mentioned, career stats:
I know offensive era of past 10-15 years is different than 30 years ago but it's a truly golden age of elite QBs.

Saquon Barkley ran for 1000+ yds and a 5.9 ave as a TRUE freshman behind a 2015 PSU OL that the 2013 UM line would get on groupchat to laugh about. So yes you could in theory win with a Smith but it helps to have a Deshaun Watson. There were holes in the 2nd half vs FSU that a very talented back would have exploited - Evans did in his limited carries. Barkley would have... Smith was unable to. It is what is is. #horsebeat

Antjuan Simmons would be the protypical "I've been wronged by UM...look at the chip on my shoulder" MSU commit. I guess if Harbaugh is "cooling" on Kurt this would fit the same mold ala Messiah.
What's weird is the #6 rated RB in the nation is available and MSU is heavy after him and UM is not. Strange.

Young inexperienced talented guys at corner...ok mostly. Young inexperienced talented guys at safety... oh no's.
I feel more sanguine about the defense than offense next year but it's all relative. Especially when you can't count on Mone to stay upright for 20% of the season. Also Hurst has benefited from the smaller workload - it's a lot easier to penetrate when you are going up against a guy worn down by the Glasgow types. His energy level on 3rd down won't be the same now.
Don Brown was handed a Ferrari last year - this year is really going to be one we see what Brown can do for you.

Awesome info and why everyone should pour themselves in salt before the "oh he is going to start over XX the minute he gets on campus" BS. All you can do is get as many highly rated guys as you can and hope for the best with the right coaching development. For every "Filiga is coming in, wrest the starting OT job as a true freshman, and gonna do great year 1!!" I'd like to point out Bredeson was more highly rated at an "easier position" along the line and was basically a black hole --- as it should be for a true freshman.
But again, great data. Should be relatively sobering and reposted once a month in offseason as all the 9-3 predictions today turn into 11-1 by the time August camp hype is in full gear.

UMbig seems much more pensive than Brian about a Newsome return. And it sounds like at all, forget missing a year and coming back in 2018.
But let's play rainbow and ponies and say he comes back in some form. This will be a man who was in a hospital for nearly 40 days, whose has to start to walk yet, whose leg will have atrophied, who will have missed an entire offseason of S&C, who will have missed spring game. What do you expect from that sort of offseason program for an OL in terms of competitive ability next September?
|4 days 4 hours ago||This. The above also||
This. The above also projects zero injuries in a sport of violent collisions. It is difficult for us to even project 5 players. What happens when 1 (or dare I say 2) go out for 3 games? This is so very frustrating as I feel we just did all this 3-4 years ago. And here we are again.
I am hoping one of those low rated guys from 2 years ago step up, they've had 2 years in the program, S&C, Drevno coaching - just like in the NFL where UDFAs sometimes outplay high draft choices I hope the advantages of age, weight gain, strength gain, and non HS coaching means these guys can be adequate players and at least 1 of those 2 guys hold down 1 position in a not negative fashion.
|4 days 4 hours ago||Wow Mike Dudek. Completely||
Wow Mike Dudek. Completely missed that.
You forgot Artavis Scott - only reason he comes to mind is we were heavy on his trail - 76 catches, 965 yds as a true freshman.
We do need some guy to break out, it is just not something we have associated with true freshman and it's difficult to hoist on anyone... but DPJ on paper is supposed to be that guy. I'd be content with 30 catches myself.
Also with the dropoff in Chesson this year it makes me a bit more pensive that our freshman from last year barely caught anything - there was opportunityh there for either of those 2 guys who played quite a bit to step in and get 25 catches. They didn't. So I'm not sure what it means for next year. It makes me feel like they are more on a Chesson Darboh track which means fine JRs and SRs but slow progression types.
|4 days 4 hours ago||This was a great post and not||
This was a great post and not rah rah like I sometimes expect here. Also fair on Sp8 vs the "the guy we have not seen is going to be pass him so easy!" crowd. Pocket presence is so difficult to coach and he has it in spades and behind that OL will need it in spades.
I am a bit worried about the WRs as there was very little production outside of jet sweeps and such from returning guys - esp if Perry is pushed away. I know freshman and all but you would have expected with the lack of production of Chesson that someone would have filled that void and put up 18-20 catches. There are true freshman contributing - Scott at Clemson did straight away. We didn't see that from our guys.
That said freshman to soph jump is key; I just wish there was more there in terms of actual catching and less of jet sweeping. These things are also why we'll wait and see on DPJ and Black types - if they can combine for 25 catches that might be the ceiling for them realistically in year 1.
OL unfortunately being equal to this year's is going to be considered a plus. People quickly forget how highly rated Bredeson was - he was above Chuck F or Ruiz and you saw the struggles. So all the 'just plug in Chuck and we good" talk...
Going to be an interesting year on offense for sure. And if that OL can't open up lanes for the RBs - which look like the potential strength of this offense - it's going to be frustrating.
