“On the offense last year, they had great spacing. That’s what I remember. Great spacing, great shooters, like Nik Stauskas, who’s not there right now. But they always have someone to fill the roles. They have a cutting offense, kind of hard to guard.”

This is a fair point as we play MSU at the exact same point in both years but last year we had Indiana inflating the "first 7" game stats and this year we dont get that benefit until post MSU.
That said it will be interesting to see if we can get to 35 or so v Indiana. They are as close to a Miami OH defense as we will see the rest of the way. Iowa got to 38 pts vs Indiana... in the first half alone.
By the way, Indiana's S&P+ ranking is currently 88, so roughly 10 ahead of Miami (OH).

First, I don't understand your hate for mlive writers. Especially for a story that was listing statistics. You are implying the statistics would somehow be different if reported by MGoBlog or Sports Illustrated or whatever your level of the highest level of sports journalism is. They are stats compiled by computers - not opinions.
Second, see the SP ranks posted by BiSB on another thread today
The FEI is more favorable to the defenses but many say its too early in the season to give them true value at this time.
So we've played two top 20 defenses, 2 baby seals, a mediocre Rutgers, and a good ND defense. All inflated by playing Michigan. How different is this cadre of defenses than every team in America in a Big 5 conference plays?
Again Purdue with a brand new QB in his 3rd game put up 38 pts on Minnesota...in Minnesota. We put up 14 at home - with a QB who at that time had more experience than Appleby.
North Carolina went on the road to Notre Dame and put up 43 in South Bend. We put up 0.
OSU put up zilly numbers on Rutgers. Washington State hung nearly 40. We put up 24.
I just dont see a lot of elite defenses we played. PSU has a good defense in my book, Rutgers has a solid front 4, Utah was missing its starting MLB and returned like 5 starters from 2013, Minnesota got trucked by TCU and Purdue. Notre Dame was in its 2nd game, missing multiple players due to suspension. Arizona State will put up 40 on them in a few weeks - watch for it.
We put up 57 pts in 5 games against teams in the Big 5 conferences. OSU put up that much on Rutgers alone with a revamped OL and a RS frosh in game 6 of his career. We are not playing Ole Miss or Stanford or MSU 2013 defenses.

Agree with you on route running but this is year 3 in the system. It's not an excuse if he is not running crisp routes.
As for Gallon guy ran a 4.39 at combine with a 4.45 official. That is pretty elite speed; I think people underestimate his speed. The elite of the elite are 4.35. He just lacks NFL size. Still surprised he did not get more of a chance as he could be a poor man's Wes Welker type.

"You're probably wondering "what radical new direction will this knight errant take the hallowed Spartan program?" Well, let me tell you: every year Michigan State will jump out to a fast start by beating a bunch of awful nonconference teams. When they play at Notre Dame, they will win. Everyone will get all hyped up for the Michigan game, which they will lose. On the off chance they do not lose, they will arrange to lose to Indiana or Northwestern or some such team to restore the cosmic balance. After the Michigan game they will collapse wholesale."
This actually sounds a lot like UM 2009-2013... how fucking ironic.
|6 hours 53 min ago||LOL okWhy dont you give me a||
Why dont you give me a list of stats that are missing so I can go compile them.
Outside of fumbles lost (only 1 fumble variance year over year), time of possession and total rushing (the latter of which I explained above) I dont know what major offensive statistic you are seeking that is missing to paint a more complete picture. Give me the line items you need to not make this a total random collection of stats that is cherry picked.
And dont include the "Juggernaut" defense theory - outside of Utah they are playing a lot of ho hum midwest defenses which pile up stats by playing a lot of other stagnant Midwest type offenses. To that end they are also getting inflated by playing UM's offense.
|7 hours 4 min ago||" TOTAL 1 3||
One thing UM always had was good blocking WRs - that was certainly true of the 80s/90s and most of the 00s. There were more screens listed on your UFR than I remembered, but maybe a tunnel screen is different than what I view as a screen which you list as a bubble screen. Watching how Purdue attacked MSU they did bubble screens and stacked WR sets all day where the press nature of MSU plays into the hands of a WR - instead of having to go find a CB, the CB is standing right there. So the 2 WRs engage to the 2 corners on that side of the formation, then the third WR has to beat the safety (or an outside LB) 1 v 1. Both Oregon and Purdue exploited this. Than I saw a few plays where UM tried a similar play vs PSU and they mostly were blown up or 2-3 yard gain type of things.
Again, how this collection of talent cannot do these basic things that Purdue can is beyond me. I realize Chesson is our one WR who actually seems to enjoy blocking and he was out of the game but this doesnt excuse the rest. And I am a big Hecklinski fan but this falls to him. We have chosen to go large with our WRs so that should benefit them as downfield blockers over slight speedy guys. But they cant even do that well very often.
|7 hours 21 min ago||We'll see at the combine but||
We'll see at the combine but he strikes me as a more of a 4.6 kind of straight line speed guy. You'd see Gallon blow by people and somehow be so wide open a few times a game. He timed at 4.45 with a low of 4.39. Funchess is a very big man and I dont expect him to be a 4.4ish guy - there are maybe 2 guys that size who can run like that off the top of my head, AJ Green and Calvin.
I'm just going by eye test rather than a specific 40 time - there has to be a poor man's Desean Jackson or Sammy Watkins a team like UM can land every 2nd or 3rd recruiting class. Maybe a more raw WR / athlete type who would develop over time but every time is on the field you have to worry about him even as a decoy. I mean that is basically Chesson's role right now - he doesnt see the ball much at all but he is not stretching defenses as a vertical threat.
|7 hours 30 min ago||Team slogan: We're not||
Team slogan: We're not methodical!
As others have stated this team cannot put together long drives. Which is why it is so difficult to get to the red zone. (Our red zone offense is actually pretty darn cool and effective, it is just rarely seen) You start on your 32 yard line and the drive usually implodes by play 5-6 when you might get to the other team's 40 yard line. Over and over. For this offense, once you get a holding call you might as well just punt because there is no coming back from it that drive.
p.s. aren't there just 122 teams in FBS?
|7 hours 35 min ago||Those are the stats chosen by||
Those are the stats chosen by mlive that I just put in a cleaner format.
The 3rd quarter stat would be described by some as the ability to adjust at halftime to what you were given in the 1st half. So if one believes that, Borges did a better job adjusting than Nuss.
As for total rushing I looked it up on my own as I was curious because a lot of people think the rush offense has improved.... and the 2014 team is ~150 yards behind 2013's pace. Devin is behind last year's pace, and the RBs are just about equal to 2013's crew. We have about 1100 yards total, inclusive of 2 baby seals. So I doubt this team hits 2000 yards rushing for the season.
Ah the great defenses excuse.
Is it the great defense of Rutgers that held OSU to just a shade over 50.... the great Notre Dame defense that held North Carolina to a shade below 50.... the great Minnesota defense that held Purdue to 38...at home. Must have been the Utah defense screwing up the stats.
|7 hours 56 min ago||Speed kills. I get getting a||
Speed kills. I get getting a bunch of larger WRs to fit your scheme but there is a happy medium out there,we should have a 5'11". 6'0 guy somewhere in our scheme with 4.4 speed - you need to stretch a defense. That was supposed to be Chesson I guess but I have not really seen any burner speed out of him. So now they say it will be Drake Harris. But there is almost no vertical threat in this offense anymore.
|9 hours 17 min ago||I joked last year when Mork||
I joked last year when Mork was being paid $2M in year 6 at MSU we should double his salary and get him at UM. He was criminally underpaid relative to his success.
Of course these things never happen (HC at 1 rival going to the other) but if you wanted a stroke of genius you could debilitate your rival and instantly get one of the top 10 coaches in the nation here in 1 fell swoop. (Of course Dantonio would not coach here for even $10M IMO since his entire adult life has been spent hating UM ...but just speaking in theory)
|9 hours 22 min ago||LOL they did not get gassed||
LOL they did not get gassed by Nebraska. That was a thorough dismantling thru 3 quarters and then MSU checked out mentally - even their coaches said they thought it was in the bag - the stadium emptied, and Nebraska starting to get a few breaks i.e. a big punt return etc.
Oregon they did get gassed in the 2nd half in 95 degree heat with 6 new starters on defense learning the ropes. They humilitated Nebraska, destroyed Abdullah and pulled the Denard Robinson defense on Tommy Armstrong - have your 53% passer try to beat our secondary while we focus all guns on making your running game inept.
|9 hours 31 min ago||The way Purdue attacked MSU||
The way Purdue attacked MSU was a competent QB who can complete passes to the flat with accuracy repeatedly. They also protected him very well in the 1st half and the 4th quarter (Sparty made an adjustment at half and demolished him in the 3rd quarter). This widened out the Spartan defense and opened up holes to run through. The pass opened up the rung ame.
We neither have a QB who throws with accuracy repeatedly nor an OL who protects well. We dont match up with their strengths.
It is not a great defense, it is a good defense. And where they are vulnerable (their safeties have been poor this year) we dont have the tools to attack repeatedly. With will probably luck in a big play or two along the way but this offense cannot sustain drives of 7-10 plays and thats what a team like Purdue did to succeed.
|9 hours 42 min ago||I dont think anyone imagned||
I dont think anyone imagned the season being over in week 5. I am a lot more EMO than most around here and even I thought 8-4 with the OL getting better in the 2nd half of the year. 3 losses to the rivals and then 1 head scratching loss elsewhere was my view - even the good 90s teams often had 3-4 losses so I was unclear why people thought this was a 10-2 team or better.
With all the ND suspensions, I did think that looked winnable however as we got close to the game but thought it was 50/50. I did however say all winter the Utah game would go a long way to determining the course of the season as the difference between 3-1 and 2-2 is huge and it was the type of team most fans would overlook but is good enough to beat ok teams on the road. Any team that beat Stanford on any field - road or home - is one that UM might not match up with. Never expected to lose to Minnesota though preseason.
My biggest caveat outside of the OL coming into the year was a lack of progression seen by Devin in the spring game, and then the scrimmage. He looked like the same guy as last year. Unfortunately he has even regressed more to the point we are completely missing a few of those Vince Young Jr games he had in 2013 (OSU, ND, Indiana). I did not expect that, i thought he'd be a major variance player who has some big games and some bad ones like last year but his trend would be a bit better. Its the most important position in the sport and on a team with 3/4 upperclassmen starting Devin needed to be very good - like JT Barrett good. Great heart with Devin but you need your 5th year senior to be a stud. I also thought we'd have a competent backup in Shane if Devin did not improve - not a world beater but a guy who could be like the 6th best QB in a bad league of QBs.... it's almost amazing to see how bad Shane and Russ B are when a guy like Appleby shows up at Purdue and is outplaying them by miles.
I think overlooked in the Hoke focus is we might have some of the worst position coaches in the Big 10 - I know they have defenders here but Funk, Jackson and Mallory - the latter of which is never spoken about, are below average IMO. Mallory coached the entire secondary last year and it was horrid. This year he is doing the safeties and they are the worst unit by a long shot. Yet everyone focuses on Manning who at least is developing Lewis.
My opinion is position coaching is the most overlooked part of a team and we are severely lacking in multiple spots. Even if the HC is a CEO type who is disengaged excellent position coaching can make up for it to a degree.
|1 day 9 hours ago||Right. If it ended today||
Right. If it ended today you'd have 2 undefeated SEC west teams - both would go And one undefeated reigning champion. So that's 3. So it would be 1 open spot up to debate.
But the playoff is not today it is at end of year. What ESPN should be doing is projecting out to the end of the year - Bama and Auburn cannot absorb another loss, that would be 2 losses in a world too many other teams have 1 or 0.
It is interesting how few teams this year are undefeated halfway through the season, generally there would be more at this point (more like 6-8 rather than 3).

Frankly I find this sad. If we are doing well and then one of our rivals stubs their toes it seems like a much more approriate time. Now we are like the loser burnout in the backroom of the class watching the QB turned down by the hottest chick in the school, as he tried to trade up from the 2nd hottest chick - and we snicker.
I am not sure what era in the past 50-70 years is as bad as this one; I doubt any. All 3 of our rivals are top 5-15ish type of teams, and all 3 have what are considered to 5-15th coaches in the nation. All 3 are in discussions for playoffs this year, and if not for tattoo gate, 2 of them would have played for the NC in 2012, and last year one finished 3rd. One has beaten us 5 out of 6, one has beaten us 10 of 11 and that only win was due to a stupid coach installed for a year, and the other undressed our AD pregame a few years back as he said later gator - and effectively says we don't need you.
I mean I'd love their misery right now. And until we become relevant in any fashion I am pretty emotionless about their minor stumbles. They just looked damn good on national tv, in front of tons of recruits nationally -recruits they will develop - and we will say "oh yeah, this all sucks for ND." Meanwhile we are stuck in the wilderness, praying for any relevant coach to even give us a look, and our schadenfreude is "man I hope they dont get into the playoffs" or "could someone please go and offer their coach a better job!"
