Umm some of you guys are making him sound like he was Spike Albrecht in HS. He was a well known top 12-15ish QB before he was offered.

Welcome back - havent seen you in a while gif master.

Think we are "ok" with the starting 5 - my concerns rise substantially when the normal injuries occur. The Miller retirement hurts there because Glasgow could play anywhere and if someone goes down you move Glasgow to his position and in would come Magnuson as the 6th. Our 6th and 7th this year are open questions - guys who should be ready in year 3 but we've never seen them.

UM had the better offense last year - somehow. PSU had the better defense. They were 2 even teams playing in AA. 18-13 or whatever it was,was not some sort of domination.
The hype for PSU is they lost an excellent MLB but bring back much of what was prob the best Big 10 defense last year. Their offense was a joke - so you say if they do something this year on offense to actually help that excellent defense and you have something. They have good skill players and a potentially very good QB. If the OL can make the same step UM's did last year from horrid to meh - and you combine with that defense you can do some damage.
It was also year 1 of a new staff - most teams with good staffs make marked improvement in year 2. 12 months from now that will be the rallying cry on this blog-elite coaches have huge years in year 2 (Saban, Meyer, Stoops, Spurrier, etc). Not implying Franklin is that caliber but any competent staff has things running smoothly in year 2 and is not installing from scratch so that helps.
They also have a very easy early schedule and could start 6-0.
These are 2 evenly matched teams,and its in Happy Valley. Just by default you give PSU an edge. Again,that team with one of the worst OL in recent memory was a phantom PI call away from defeating OSU last year.
|17 hours 54 min ago||But there will be injuries||
But there will be injuries this year just the same. The questions are to whom and what is the depth at the position. Mone's was tolerable due to the position. If its an OL, QB, or corner we have issues. Etc. People look at the starting roster on Sep1 and project the year based on that - we'll have injuries and so will everyone else. A big variable.
|20 hours 1 min ago||That have a good staff under||
That have a good staff under Franklin esp on the D. Their DC might be the best in the conf. Its not just all about a HC -but position coaches and coordinators too.
In the end the players play - they have a QB with far more upside as well and their skill guys were all really young last year and come back with a lot of experience now. The question is all about OL for them. Similar to UM last year all people want is to see progress on the OL from "disaster" to "meh". Which is more than possible. And people act as if going to play in Happy Valley in a night game is a no biggie. Going to be a deafening environment. That PSU team with a crap OL gave OSU a heck of a game at home last year . That's going to be a great battle IMO.
|20 hours 2 min ago||wow I expected 8 wins from||
wow I expected 8 wins from her as she is notoriously positive on anything UM.
I think 7-8 is the national # just about everyone has. The entire Sunday news staff had 7-5 except for 1 dude at 8 wins. Of course the blog community here is generally going to be more positive with 8-9 as a baseline with the occassional 10 thrown in.
Season will be determined by the gauntlet of Utah, BYU, PSU, Minnesota which I'd catergorize as the 2nd tier of games after the top 2. Go 2-2 in that group and 8 wins seems like a good floor .
If UM finds a loss elsewhere on the schedule (i.e. Northwestern, a pretty bad Maryland squad on the road) - which is more than possible as far more talented Carr teams found a way to lose 1 every year and the team is still in transition- then you really need an upset in the top 2 games to offset.

Minn is being overvalued by last year - their entire offense was Cobb and Maxx Williams, both in the NFL. Their QB is junk. They dont have depth to lose great players and just reload. They are being viewed in the same light Northwestern was after their 10 win season. Fitz was getting all the love Kill is 3 years ago. Then the reality of teams who dont have a real 2 deep hits, when you lose your top few players. They have recency bias all around them but people who take the time to analyze where their offense came from last year will see it's 70% gone.
If you compare the squads the only place Minn has a clear advantage is secondary. Its still a team with one 4 star on the entire roster. Go back 2 years and even Hoke's team destroyed Minn.
|20 hours 11 min ago||Shane Morris starting with 1||
Shane Morris starting with 1 established receiver with a host of coaches no P5 program wanted except for 2 on an entire staff? And if Shane got hurt you are talking Malzone or Speight? With the inability to field 11 players on special teams and Jake in Iowa? With a coach who could not beat anyone over .500 on the road? And bumbling Hoke at the helm?
I'd say 7 was our ceiling with that staff.
|20 hours 15 min ago||Sadly that is pretty close to||
Sadly that is pretty close to what Urban has done at OSU. Sigh. He has something like a 93% win rate there.
|1 day 9 hours ago||Hoke's floor could easily||
Hoke's floor could easily have been lower. With an unproven Shane Morris throwing to a mostly unproven core of wide receivers, with a coach that could not beat teams >,500 on the road period, who could not field 11 players on special teams regularly. Just about all games save for UNLV would be a potential loss with that last staff and the returning talent on offense.
|1 day 9 hours ago||If UM beats those 3 teams||
If UM beats those 3 teams they should win 10 games - those are 3 of their 5 toughest opponents.
|1 day 9 hours ago||fyi 2 years is an eternity in||
fyi 2 years is an eternity in college football with graduations. That team lost its QB, both stud rbs and a bunch of that defense. You can lose 40%+ of your roster in 2 years and it will obviously will be all the upperclassmen. You saw the stark difference in UM football between say 2006 and 2008 - 2 years is a sea change. It is not the NFL where you retain all your stars and then a new coach can take them places.
I do agree with your larger point about expectations and what other coaches have done in similar situations. That said these coaches did huge things in year 2 often. But Auburn is not one you want to raise a fight about - Gus did a hell of a job.
|1 day 9 hours ago||FSU would disagree with||
FSU would disagree with you
I've been surpised we've had no kicker threads all summer - after all wearing Nike is far more important than a guy who can regularly give you 3 pts from 42 yards out.
|1 day 9 hours ago||The interesting stat in the||
The interesting stat in the segment I saw was of all the 5-7 P5 teams that a new coach took over for in like last 20ish years only one won 9 games - Bo Pelini's Nebraska. I believe one team won 8 (might have been Auburn) and then a few won 7. Alot of the others (i.e. Butch Jones at TN) were at 5, 6, etc.
So needless to say it is pretty rare to show a 4 game improvement in 1 year. Granted I dont think last year's talent was 5 wins but maybe closer to a 7-6 team. But I am sure they said the same at Nebraska and Auburn in their 5 win seasons pre coaching change.

I don't like this, I wanted Peppers to have a clear path to a Heisman. Now with Canteen also a 2 way player that is 2 Heisman candidates and it's just going to split the Michigan vote btw these 2. Damn these first world problems.

Historian and WD can confirm but was the Minnesota road game with Navarre and Thomas the biggest comeback ever for UM?
The Braylon Edwards Henne vs MSU game also has to be up there.
Don - I was shocked you were not 10 years old when this catch happened like almost every other member of the board. ;)

If I was on staff I'd have run out of things to say to Jonathan Jones by now. And they need to keep doint it for another 5 mo? Yowsers.
Also holy ron johnson drop.

I see someone else already had the "Brady Hoke is available" meme down lower on the thread!
|3 days 7 hours ago||free points!||
|3 days 14 hours ago||Right but this is a sunshine||
Right but this is a sunshine blowing thread so I ignored the last sentence.
The Pac 12 has good defenses too - they are stressed far more than Big 10 defenses. Pac 12 QBs actually can throw 15 yard out patterns on the regular. There were 5 guys who threw for 3800+ yards in the Pac 12 - in the big 10 the best was 3200 in Cook and it dropped off a cliff after that. So Big 10 defenses that you pat on the back for Rudock doing ok against get inflated stats.
Wilson is very similar to Rudock. In fact both had backups pushing them to the bench... but Utah's got hurt.
|3 days 14 hours ago||If you want more sunshine||
If you want more sunshine blowing you could also look at the opponent and say
a) they lost both their coordinators
b) they lost their best defensive player in Nate Orchard
c) their best CB coming back is suspended / kicked off team?
d) their QB is not a typical high octane Pac 12 QB, he is basically Jake Rudock of the Pac 12.
As far as Pac 12 matchups, if you exclude the garbage at the bottom (of which Oregon State will be) this is a pretty perfect matchup for UM. Its not a high octane offense that has the potential to put up 40 on you so it wont pressure are offense to try to be something it is not. Utah wins with defense and special teams, something UM is probably going to have to do quite a bit this year. They do have a bad ass running back. And great kicking game - our FG kickers really have not been discussed much at all offseason but it's an open question esp in a year I expect many close games.
|3 days 15 hours ago||Not necessarily on the||
Not necessarily on the defense - Les' elite DC left him this offseason to go to A&M. So we'd be starting Morris in a Les Miles offense known for wtf QBs surrounded by elite NFL talent at the skill positions (which we currently do not have). And Mattison would still be DC. Mattison is solid but not Chavis.
Even more scary it sounds like our now worshiped AD was very close to keeping Hoke. Can't imagine going into this year with the remnants of what that class would have been under Hoke starting Morris with Speight as backup. With all these position coaches that no one nationally wanted.

When Victor is Taysom Hilling our team to a national championship with a TD pass to TE Zach Gentry in the NC game, minds will be blown.

Furbush needed the weight but I am surprised at how many lbs they packed on these linebackers across the board in an era of more and more spread offenses. Granted, very few spreads in the Big 10 but still these are some supersized LBs in an era when many play 230 or less in college. Ross is going to look completely different too as his meme for 3 years was fast undersized dude who got run over if the DL didnt do its job.

We've taken a lot more under the radar types on D.
|4 days 10 hours ago||Yep of course since he is||
Yep of course since he is ours we will applaud the video. When the kicker committed to PSU in similar fashion he was denounced by most of the board.
We all live in glass houses ;)
|4 days 10 hours ago||I am happy with the commit||
I am happy with the commit but my only worry is Urban backed away from Green for other RBs a few yrs back and we were all giddy we "stole him" from Urban and we see how Green compares to say an Elliott. That said Harbaugh is not Hoke but it will be curious to see how he turns out vs the guys OSU had higher on their board.
|4 days 10 hours ago||Minnesota lost its 2 star||
Minnesota lost its 2 star players on offense. Their QB is junk. They don't have the depth just to replace players at this point. The hype around Minn right now reminds me of the hype of the last great coaching phenom in the Big 10 - Fitzgerald - after Northwestern's 10 win season. You know what followed.
I would be selling their stock this year but buy it for your 401k this December after the glow wears off. I think after TCU decimates them people will come to reality - this is a roster with 1 whole 4 star on it. They do have a great secondary.
