The greatest concern is the trajectory in production is downwards in a year over year basis, but I think if Brady sticks with Borges, they will get 1 more year at least, and then it's all about the numbers. If things do not get better next year............

If Alabama was like "yeah guys do it all the time" and Michigan was like "it's not easy" it could be that both are telling the truth. Michigan's engineering program is well respected because it is not easy, and football on top of that is borderline crazy.
Do you think he would turn away from Michigan because engineering is too hard? I don't know but I'd guess the underlying reasons are probably elsewhere.

I think SC made a reasonable argument for the play he countered, but I think the greater point is the one that Brian has here where, even if you think that one play was almost okay, there were a lot of other plays that flat out didn't work (running into a wall of defenders) that were just thrown away, and the ones that did work didn't come easy.

|4 weeks 3 days ago||I think your data is||
I think your data is interesting and I think that you are bringing up some good data representing what we have.
The argument some people are making is that having two 5th year seniors at tackle is "skewing" the average. I agree with your statement that the average is the average and it's not really up for debate - I think better arguments would be made that there are diminishing returns on years of experience, and that the idea that the line is really only as good as its weakest link.
After 1 year on the field a lineman makes a big jump in experience and knowledge, however the difference between a 4th year lineman and a 5th year lineman is probably in the grand scheme of things not that much.
On the second point, you only need 1 guy to break through to the quarterback for bad things to happen, and 2 pretty much leads to a sack unless you are Denard Robinson. While the tackles stop the DEs on the side if you get 1-2 guys up the middle, it's probably a lost cause.
I'm not saying you need to redo this data - you've put together good data that supports a point you are trying to make, and I wouldn't really know how to quantify the diminishing returns on experience (and it doesn't really help that there's no good measureable stat for an individual offensive lineman's progress)
Also, I don't think that because people aren't proposing an alternative it means that they are wrong, and you're not really helping yourself with the snarkiness in your responses. I thought the original posts were fine and if people want to expand and draw their own conclusions you provided the data you had as well.

I think the biggest problem right now would be our offensive line is young and inexperienced and I think with time and if they work together they can fix that. Over time the team will come together and gel.
A lot of people point fingers at players and sometimes it takes time to learn a new role when stepping into someone else shoes.

Honestly, as much as I want to see competitive balance, it's not something you are going to reorganiez for in the future and it's hard to do. Who knows how Penn State is going to do through their scholarship reductions? Is Michigan State in a mid-upper tier of hte big ten? What about Northwesterh who appears to be on the rise?
I think the picking of winners and losers is tough and a bit shortsighted on a competitive balance aspect, though geographic exposure is a fair argument. I would also agree that certain programs may value football more (nebraska) than say basketball for other schools (Indiana) and so they will be more likely to stay in a mid-upper range than drop out, but it's just hard to tell.
I'm just glad Michigan and Ohio are in the same region. Being in the Chicago area, it sucks that I won't see them out here as often, but I suppose it was bound to happen unless the eye was chosen for the realignment.

I agree that there's something fishy about this, but Hoke and Mattison seem to be doing pretty well at identifying talent on the recruiting trail, so that aspect of it makes me feel like there MUST be something that we're missing.
Also... damn you GoWings2008 that gif was in the corner of my eye while I was writing this :(

so I'm a believer of the notion that you can largely create your own luck, however there are some aspects of last year (unlucky - no PI in Iowa/lucky - VT "catch" was not a catch) that made me wonder about it
Though this isn't what the Mathlete is measuring in this analysis, so "luck' as it is defined is roughly (as I interpret it) a team overperforming against good competition, and so I wanted to know how the team did last year.

I don't remember seeing the tunnel screen we used to run last year as much this year. LSU ran something them and it was super effective, and it may help slow down their pass rush a bit.

I'm sure Brandon sees it as a win-win for the following:
more money for the causes (less to charity costs/profits)
More advertisement of the Michigan Brand in a positive light
Either that, or as you enter the Big House for the finish, you will be greeted by Coach Brady Hoke who will then sign an advertisement for weddings in the Big House or ads for tickets for Michigan Athletics events for you!
|1 year 3 days ago||I'm no expert, but I believe||
I'm no expert, but I believe South Carolina will have a lot more success in the pass game against us. Our coverage tends to be a lot softer than what I saw from Florida, our pass rush is way less than Florida, and our numbers are good from having poor competition.
The front 7 of South Carolina concerns me. The secondary? I think we will find some holes, but we'll see, we don't have a good record against teams with a strong front 7 (ND/Bama). I guess that's a small sample set, but offensively we have been pretty ineffective, and I am thinking that will continue.
I'm hoping that South Carolina lets up on their pass rush in favor of contain which opens up the passing game for us. Either that or they don't let up on their pass rush and LOL DENARD'D

I strongly agree with the last point here. Te'o is nowhere near as good as Woodson in my mind, but he is a very good linebacker, ND would not be where they are if not for his play, but in most other years he is maybe an outside candidate at best.
I wouldn't be upset if he won, but I would largely attribute it to the lack of other good candidates. This is not to say he is not a great player, because he is, but I wouldn't normally think of him as a Heisman level player.

I like your points. I think it makes a good point on how a lot of things may have not actually been Borges's fault, but if you are looking at execution mistakes, you could make the very same arguments for Ohio. We were simply outexecuted this time, but hopefully we can continue to improve in the future.

Would you say that run blocking is more strength/skill based whereas pass blocking requiring more recognition/strategy? If so, that may say something about how we were passable through most of the year in pass blocking and terrible in run blocking this year.

I feel like one thing that is being missed here is the fact that one part of the reason the passing numbers are so low are because of some of the long time-eating drives we have had offensively (maybe not so much lately, but definitely in the earlier games). If we were still a hurry up spread offense a la Oregon then we would have way crappier defensive numbers, but way more awesome offensive numbers, so that is another tradeoff.

It seems like a jump to look at 2010 and say "So here's the bottom line: Denard has never been a good passer, or even an average passer. "
He seemed like he was a good passer last year, especially at the end of the year, but then again maybe Nebraska and Ohio State didn't have good defenses? I don't have the answer to that off hand.

I wonder if Borges did the trick plays to try to force big ten teams to prepare for just ONE MORE THING against Michigan? kind of like with the diamond packages last year?
|1 year 10 weeks ago||I agree with this, I thought||
I agree with this, I thought that our protection was not good, especially later in the game and they almost always had a free man in Denard's face. I remember one PA play where the linebacker just ran straight into Denard.
I thought Denard could have moved in the pocket a bit better as well, one of the sacks was because Schofield pushed the rusher outside and denard kind of moved back instead of moving further up in the pocket. I think he needs to learn to throw it away rather than force the issue if the run isn't there.
What did we learn? I think we re-emphasized that we are not playing at an elite level at this point, but we are, in a sense, better than we thought we were simply on how well the defense played.
Also I learned I really hate a lot of football fans. Denard has the worst game of his career and suddenly he's the worst QB of all time (from UM fans). Also f the whistle fans, they should be thrown out, it's ridiculously disrespectful to the game.

It seems like one of the big reasons why the school going to a BCS game would be failing to sell tickets. I don't think that will be the case this year. The program probably does a bit better with donations and stuff with a good showing in a BCS bowl too, though this is just speculation.

I was curious about this and did a quick google search and came up with the following:
If contact is made with the plant foot before, during and after the kick and before the kicker establishes himself as a runner, that will always be a roughing the kicker. Or at least should be called that way by the referee.
even though the contact wasn't significant, it seems like it would still apply.
