The cost-of-attendance figures can vary from institution to institituion, while also varying within an institution. It is not uncommon to have five or more cost-of-attendance figures at one institution. I believe Texas Tech has six.
One doesn't have to extrapolate too much to realize institutions will be able to toy with the parameters of specific cost-of-attendance figures on campuses to keep up with one another.
Still my favorite David Wilson quote is:
"I'm like birth control. You have to believe in me. Like birth control, 99.9 percent of the time I'm going to come through for you."
This rule actually is designed to help student-athletes. If you only have to take six credit hours to graduate then you only have to take the six hours. The rule has been changed a little few times, but instead of making a student-athlete take an additional six (or nine, ten, etc.) hours just to be full-time the rule lets a student-athlete takes only those classes needed for graduation. Are there times when student-athletes' schedules look like a joke? Yes, but it is designed to help:
14.2.2.1.3 Final Semester/Quarter A student-athlete may compete while enrolled in less than a minimum full-time program of studies, provided the student is enrolled in the final semester or quarter of the baccalaureate program and the institution certifies that the student is carrying (for credit) the courses necessary to complete degree requirements. The student granted eligibility under this provision shall be eligible for any postseason event that begins within 60 days following said semester or quarter, provided the student has not exhausted the five years for completion of the individual's maximum permissible number of seasons of eligibility (see Bylaw 14.2). Thereafter, the student shall forfeit eligibility in all sports, unless the student completes all degree requirements during that semester or quarter and is eligible to receive the baccalaureate diploma on the institution's next degree-granting date. The NLI (binds institution to the recruit and the recruit to the institution) cannot be signed as of today. That ship has sailed.....but a prospect can sign a grant-in-aid (binds an institution to a recruit but not the recruit to the institution) at any time. If Malik is 18 he could sign the grant-in-aid today, tomorrow or on August 14th. Whenever.
I do not know the ins and outs of this, but I'm not sure why Malik just can't sign the grant-in-aid. Maybe he needs his mom to sign FAFSA paperwork or something else?
First, signing some sort of agreement with non-NCAA schools has no bearing on an NCAA NLI. So, take the JUCO signing out of the equation. I actually recommend to high school prospects that are struggling academically to sign both an NCAA and JUCO agreement. That way they are covered if they fail to qualify.
Second, it is my understanding that whichever NLI was signed first is the valid NLI. There is a spot of the NLI next to the signatures (prospective student-athlete and parent/guardian) for the date and time of the day. If both NLIs have the same time then I have no idea what will happen.
The resources just aren't there for over 90% of Division I athletic departments. The effect will be discontinuing athletic programs. This leads to taking away opportunites for student-athletes which is contradictory to the initial purpose.

It really depends on a lot. The biggest factor: was the student-athlete deemed a qualifier or non-qualifier out of high school. If it is a qualifier (meet certain academic criteria such as the 2.0 and 2.3 core GPA mentioned above) then it is easier to transfer to a four-year institution and be eligible for competition immediately. Non-qualifiers have to graduate (Associate's Degree) to gain immediate eligibility when transferring to a four-year institution.
After that it depends on several factors which deal with credit hours, GPA and enrolled full-time semesters.
- The new two-year transfer eligibility requirements take effect for any student-athlete who enrolled in college full-time after August 1, 2012.
- The 2.3 GPA the article states is the lowest possible core GPA from high school/prep school for freshmen to be eligible. But that doesn't take effect until the high school class of 2016. The lowest possible high school/prep school core GPA for the 2014 and 2015 classes is 2.0.
- Two-year transfers with a GPA between a 2.0 and 2.49 can still receive athletics aid and practice. So the NCAA isn't taking away any extra educational opportunities. The year not being able to compete is designed to help ease the educational burden on incoming students who are at risk (2.0 to 2.49 and/or student-athletes who do not meet the necessary core course hour requirements).
- I work in compliance at the FCS level and I have seen a lot of two-year student-athlete transcripts. The classes the two-year institutions were having them enroll in was awful. Student-athletes who want to be business majors but they have taken mostly physical education classes to stay eligible. There is an issue and this needed to happen.
A full athletics scholarship grants a student-athlete housing and 19 meals a week. 99% of the time that's what they get. Along with medical care, training table meals, extra educational help, etc.
If the individual's family did not have enough money then he most likely met the qualifications for a Pell Grant. Pell Grants are usually around $5,000.
What if? Then a lot of other student-athletes would lose their opportunity to participate in college athletics while getting an education. Extrapolate this over the country and you are talking tens of thousand that will miss these opportunities.
The camp starts around 5:00 each year on Thursday, but before it starts all the counselors (college QBs) work with Peyton and Eli for a couple hours. There are about 40 college WRs, RBs and TEs that they throw to. Jacob Hester (Broncos) and Chase Clement (Giants) were also present. There were a couple other NFL guys I think but it was hard to tell who was who. Some of the guys get in throughout Thursday night so more will come.
Notes:
- The QBs are split in to two groups (one works with Peyton, the other with Eli and then they switch). DG was always first in line. Often taking reps with Peyton or Eli.
- I'm no football expert but DG seemed to do alright. I was standing with some college coaches and they were going on and on about his size and athleticism. Vince Young's name was thrown out a few times.
- After the workout the QBs and WRs were standing around talking to each other. A camper (8th or 9th grade) asked DB if he wanted to throw with him. He did so for about 15 minutes. he was the only counselor to throw with campers.
- Eddie George is a massive human. MASSIVE.
- Local ladies flock to town for this event. Let your imagination run wild and it is probably true.
- Chris Mortensen is always around. Everywhere you look.
- Jon Gruden and Jesse Palmer are regulars.

This is the last year of Bracket Buster games, but here is what has happened to these games:
1) Originally only had teams competing that had a chance of making the tournament.
2) Entered in to agreements with certain conferences (MVC, MAC, CAA, etc.) to have games for all of the teams in the conference in hopes of getting a couple good tv games. They would evenly pair the teams (i.e. first place from Conference A would play first place team from Conference B). This also led to last place teams playing each other.....teams that had no chance of busting any brackets.
3) Entered in to agreements with all sorts of conferences. This has led to teams with 3 or 4 wins in a conference that gets a 16 seed 75% of the time playing in Bracket Buster games.
I love this idea. I am a proponent of the FCS/FBS games because of the economic impact it has on FCS athletic programs (cross country, tennis, etc.). These guarantee games have a major impact on FCS athletic deparment budgets.
The probem is that there aren't enough FCS teams currently eligible to play FBS schools. An FCS school must maintain an average of 57.6 football scholarships yearly in order to play an FBS school.
I hear you and I add passion to the argument. Guys who didn't step foot on one country's soil until their 20s can't have the same passion for a country that a natural born citizen can.*
*There can be exceptions. I know Luol Deng has stated multiple times that he has a large amount of respect for being able to wear the England/Great Britain uniform. His family was exiled for politically reasons.
A few years ago, nbadraft.net had an article about many NBA players are actually worth a max deal. I don't remember the hard figures but I believe it said that there are less than 10 players at any time that deserve a max deal. The criteria of wins, people in the seats, tv exposure, merchandise, etc. It was very interesting.
And yes, Hibbert's deal is exactly the reason the owners locked out the players.
There is no way you can play professional football and basketball. If your team makes it to the Super Bowl then you would miss over half of the NBA season. This is why two sport athletes usually play football and baseball, football and track...nowadays anyway.
From what I understand (and I may be wrong), after McQueary told JoePa and Sandusky was "retired" he still brought kids around. I believe as recently as 2008 he had kids at practice.
