Matt Campbell, a guy with a good head coaching record is going to Iowa state, a worse job than MD. Lol at people thinking Durkin should hold off for a better job. Letting a dislike of maryland being in the big ten making you look stupid.
|15 hours 39 min ago||Why do people keep saying||
Why do people keep saying this? Coordinators without head coaching experience rarely get P5 jobs. Tom Hermann got Houston last year after being the top coordinator in the country. Maryland is a higher profile job than Houston. Jim Mcelwain went from top coordinator to colorado state before getting to Florida. It took Narduzzi three years of passing up job offers to get the Pitt job he left for which is probably a worse job than MD. This would be an amazing job to get for a coordinator with no track record and its really weird that nobody realizes this.
I'm more worried about recruiting impact than I am about playcalling issues next year if he leaves.

It isn't happening, the only trump card we had was beating two top 5 teams back to back and even then it would be an iffy argument to get in over a 1 loss team. At this point utah has a shot at not finishing outside the top 25 and osul could drop pretty far with another loss.
It also involves msu losing next, if this week taught as anything is that trusting anyone else to do your work for you is going to end in dissapointment. Beat osu and see what happens, not worth worrying about what other teams do until msu losses. Especially since if msu wins I don't want them in the playoff so I would end up rooting for opposit outcomes.

I was mostly suprised by how easiy msu could run the ball in that game. The offense was complete shit but you can try to blame some of that on the weather taking away the deep passing game which is msu's biggest weakness. For a team to give up 200 yards rusing when the passing game is zero threat is just getting punched in the face and folding.

They do? I've heard otherwise. Denard had a 40 time in high school of 4.39 and he ran a 4.32 at the combine and his personal best 100 meter time was a 10.44 in high school even though he ran track while at Michigan. Its hard to maintain the same speed when you start putting on the muscle a college S&C program gets you to deal with the added physicality.

|1 week 3 days ago||I mean Tebow's stats the year||
I mean Tebow's stats the year they won a playoff game
46.5% compeletion percentage at 6.4 a pop with 12 tds and 6 ints.He had a QBR of 29.5 that year. Having a great defense doesn't make you a great qb. Hell Trent Dilfer won a super bowl while guiding an offense that didn't score a touchdown for 3 straight games at one point that year. Team wins don't define qb play. They won 5 games that year scoring under 20 points. They also lost a game 7-3.
Denard has alse been a solid rb, but he wouldn't have been a good qb. There are no facts or statistics that can show Tebow having success in the NFL and as much as you claim Josh McDaniels saw in Tebow he got cut from the Patriots since apparently Mcdaniles didn't even think he was good enough to be the backup qb.
Sure some people bust, thats part of sports, but just like recruiting rankings the overall trend points to them being right a vast majority of the time. Not sure how anything I have said could be construed as childish but sure, keep slingling insults as the mature adult in this discussion.
|1 week 3 days ago||His recruiting profile, I||
His recruiting profile, I know its old but its was also probably inflated so I figured an increase in speed over the last 3 years is about the same as inflated high school stats, guys pretty rarely get significantly faster during college as they add muscle to handle the game better. Which is another potential problem for Lewis at the next level which is his frame, he would be a super skinny db at the nfl level.
edit to add it is his espn recruiting profile and the 40 time listed is 4.68 which was from a timed forty at army all-american game.
|1 week 3 days ago||1 game is not having success||
1 game is not having success in the nfl, thats a multi year thing to achieve. Being the 25th pick isn't high for a guy who held multiple records and is considered by some to be one of the most succesful college players of all time. And you haven't refuted any of the overall points my post made which is to say that college numbers neither gaurantee a high draft nor success in the nfl. These scouts make a lot of money because they tend to be right and can look past just statistics. It takes a different level of athlete to succeed on the nfl level. The fact that lewis is the 8th best cb prospect despite being the most accomplished this year is a reflection of that, I'm not sure why that is a difficult concept to grasp.
Jourdan Lewis could both be an all-american this year and the 8th best pro prospect, both can simaltaneously happen and both be correct.
|1 week 3 days ago||Jimmy Smith is the ravens #1||
Jimmy Smith is the ravens #1 CB, he is in the top half of the league but not truly elite and was drafted something like 22nd. He is 6'2 and runs a timed 4.47 40. Jourdan Lewis is a generous 5'10 and runs a 4.6. He is a really smart player but when you are going up against 6'4 wr's with 4.4 speed those physical limitations matter a lot less. You see that wr in college maybe once a year and probably not at all, a lot of nfl teams have multiple guys at least 6 ft that run under 4.6s. Its a different level athletically and that is what will hold Lewis back. His place in the nfl is probably as nickel back covering slot guys who run sub 4.4s in the combine, that isn't a 1st rd grade.

|1 week 3 days ago||There are six more athletic||
There are six more athletic cbs, not necessarily playing better in college. I hate when people try start shit like this. Tim Tebow has some of the best stats of any college qb ever. Denard Robinson was a successful college qb with crazy yardage totals. Hawaii qbs broke ncaa passing records for years. None of those guys were top draft picks or proved anyone wrong for not drafting them. Putting up great numbers in college doesn't mean you will be the best in the nfl, its a different game with a different level of athlete. Burbridge is probably a 3rd or 4th rd wr who will probably be at best a 4th wr for the first couple of years in the league and he and jourdan lewis played to about a stalemate. If you are picking a db in the first round its someone you hope to be able to putt on antonio brown in 3 years. I love lewis but he probably doesn't project to be that guy.

Yeah I'm sure those guys won't out athlete channing stribling or jeremy clark either. The only reason you take him is if all of those guys suck and if they all suck we are screwed anyways because Taysom Hill is guaranteed to get injured.

I'm not as bullish as you guys are about Robinson yet. Shooting isn't just shooting, look at Stauskas in the NBA right now, his 3 point percentage is terrible because the guys guarding him are now more athletic than him. I'm not worried about what Robinson brings to the table against Elon, I'm worried about what happens to him when we play msu or osu or maryland, especially on the defensive side where he is already getting abused, against a player like Jake Layman he may be so bad at defense as to be unplayable even if he is hitting his shots.
The defense worries me but I think the offense gets even better with Irvin back, so that is awesome.

You are right that osu was a big game, they were also 6-6 that year. I was picking stats from games against good teams, not just rivalry games and 2011 osu wasn't a good team. Rich Rod offenses shredded bad teams and faltered against good ones so comparing yearlong stats doesn't do much for me. I don't really care about Denards stats against bowling green or indiana, I care about how he performed as a qb in games against competitive teams. and comparing that to Henne in games against competitive teams.
Put it another way, Henne never has a game where he only throws for 87 yards. If your goal is to win a championship that can't be an option.

2010 Denard against ranked teams:

Osu: 8/18 87 yds with 18 carries for 105 yds
Miss st: 27/41 254 yds 2 td 1 int with 11 carries for 59 yds
He also had 10 fumbles that year though didn't go through the game by game breakdown
2006 Chad Henne agains ranked teams (super small sample but includes 3 top 10 teams.
ND: 13/22 220 yds 3td 1 int
Osu: 21/35 267 yds 2 td
USC: 26/41 309 yds 2 td 1 int
If I am rolling with the team Brian posted I'm going for the QB who isn't going to put up a 3 int game at any point.

Denard shredded bad ND teams, here are some statlines from his games against good defenses.
The BCS win you mentioned? 9/21 117 yds 2 tds 1 int and 13 carries for 13 yards
against msu that same year? 9/24 123 yds 1td 1 int and 18 carries for 42 yards
I can keep going. Denards td/int ratio the year we won the sugar bowl? 20/15 his best year he went 18/11. He was an incredibly exciting player and seems like a great guy as a person and I wish he was around during a better time in Michigan footbal but to put him at qb over 2006 Chad Henne who completed over 60% of his passes with a td/int ratio of 22/8 that year is just absurd. Denard just wasn't that good at throwing part of being a qb and its the reason the offense got shut down against good teams.
|1 week 5 days ago||I love Denard but really? He||
I love Denard but really? He isn't a good qb, makes more sense to include him as a rb. With those wr's having an actual accurate qb who won't turn the ball over much is way more valuable than a dual threat qb who isn't a good enough thrower to win a game where the run gets taken away (ie every big game michigan played with him at qb). You take henne at that spot 100 times out of 100 especially since Mike Hart isn't a big play explosive back that your really want paired with a qb in zone read offense.

I would also add a team could defend this alignment by not really respecting peppers arm, put two cb's over the 3 wr's with a safety shaded in between able to come off that edge or cover a slant to the inside from one the wr's. Since its at the goal line the cb's will be playing press coverage eliminating a bubble screen and assuming Peppers can't throw a perfect fade route to the far side of the field a the only real routes they can run are slants making a 3 wr bunch a pretty ineffective formation. It would work better with Rudock still under center.
|1 week 5 days ago||They would stop it by having||
They would stop it by having someone win a block. This also involves peppers having to bowl over a lb in a hole since you don't have enough guys to block him and while its certainly possible peppers does it you don't know for sure. But this is pretty much what Indiana did with Jordan Howard, they spread us out and then just had Howard run over our lb's into the end zone.

Well they aren't paying a 40m exit they negoiated a settlment for 30 million dollars that was owed to maryland but was never paid and the school doesn't have to make any additional payments to the ACC.
And yes MD football sucks right now. They also have more players currently in the NFL than Michigan and had 3 consecutive 10+ win seasons in the early 2000's including a bcs bowl. So sure it isn't ever going to be a powerhouse but to pretend like MD football never has been good and has no chance of ever being good is a little absurd. MD has better shot at being a good football team in 10 years than msu does.

On top of that UA sponsors a ton of high school basketball and football teams as well as the UA all america game. Being the lead school of a brand kids like helps in recruiting, thats part of why everyone here wanted to get out of adidas.
So I would consider a new state of the art training facility, the money necessary to fire a shit coach and bring in a good one, and an increased recruiting profile (already paying off in basketball, see Stone, Diamond) pretty tangible benefits but thats just me.

In regards to Maryland, they have Dwayne Haskins coming in at qb who is the #23 recruit in the country. They also have some decent wr talent (they were open against md just dropped a bunch of balls/perry hills sucks as a qb). So pretty much msu this year but with will likely as a dangerous returner.

If he has been practicing including contact for at least a week its worth it. As a competitive guy you know Mone is going to want to be out there so its up to the coaching and medical staff to make sure the right decision is being made medically and not just from a competitive standpoint.
Would love to know if he has been participating in contact drills yet.

Are we so sure a 1 loss tcu or Baylor team that wins out and wins the big 12 wouldn't get in over us. A 2 loss utah pac 12 champ gets in over us because of a head to head victory. Not really. I thought we looked bad that entire game. If we were actually a top 4 team in the country we win that game by double digits easy. Their offense consisted long heaves to one wr and their defense was have a good d-line and pray Rudock can't hit open wr's down field. Special teams for them was so bad they just did their best to not use them at all, fake punts, 4th down conversions, squib kicks. A top 4 team at home wins that game easily, they don't get beat on a fluky last play because they couldn't seperate.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||We didn't win that game.||
We didn't win that game. Every play counts. You can't point to special teams as being an important factor to a game for a reason why we weren't actually getting dominated in that game and then dismiss a special teams play at the end.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I'm not being dismissive. I||
I'm not being dismissive. I think we are a top 15 team that is a damn big turn around and a hell of a team that in any one game situation could potentially beat 99% of teams this year. However when I am thinking top 4 teams by the eye test it is more if the teams played 10 times who would win more. Over a 10 game series I think Clemson, OSU, Bama, Stanford, LSU, Baylor, Oklahoma would beat us at least off the top of my head. Until we beat a team with a good defensive line I'm not buying us being a truly elite team. Here is a list of offenses who performed better against msu's defense than we did at home:
Western Michigan, Oregon, Rutgers, Indiana, and Nebraska. When your offense is performing on the same level as Purdue against anything resembling a good dline I'm not putting you in the top 4, I don't care how good your defense and punter are.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Northwestern isn't that||
Northwestern isn't that good. They beat Stanford which looks great but since you are so willing to throw out the first game of the season that was Stanfords first game playing what was a 9 am kickoff for them. Take that out and Northwestern has gotten wrecked by Iowa and Michigan and their best win is a squeker over a duke team that just got embaressed by unc.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Based on the way we played||
Based on the way we played against minnesota we should have lost. You can't just eliminate a fluky loss and pretend the lucky win didn't happen also. Things happen in college football. That last play sucked against msu but the only reason it mattered is because our offense couldn't move the ball against a good defensive line. The same thing happened against utah. Until the offense functions against good defensive lines we aren't elite. So have good performances against psu and osu and I'll be convinced, until then this is a top 15 team not a top 4.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Losing to MSU was a fluke, it||
Losing to MSU was a fluke, it being a 1 point game wasn't. Our offense played like shit that game. We barely escaped a mediocre minnesota team because of terrible playcalling on their part. And if we are throwing out the first game of the year what makes us look better than stanford?
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Our offense started on msu's||
Our offense started on msu's half of the field like 6 times that game and we scored two offensive td's. Sure we were also screwed by some shitty calls by the refs but those only mattered because our offense played like shit. If you get to ignore losses because of ref fuck ups than msu is still undefeated. If you let teams hang around by playing like crap you open yourself up to bad things happening. If MSU had a competent punter we probably lose that game by 10 points, their offense did a better job against our defense than vice versa. I was at the game. And congrats on the close loss, thats cool but if we are throwing out the first game of the year then Stanford looks like a clearly better team.
TCU also won 23-17 and were up 20-3 at one point before letting minnesota score to make it look closer at the end. I'm not arguing Michigan couldn't beat Florida in a nuetral site game but I would put it at 60-40 Florida to win, same with Stanford, Lsu would be higher, we already lost to utah when we played them but somehow you have decided we are actually the better team because since then we have beaten northwestern. If we move the ball on osu and psu you will be right, but until the offense shows a pulse against any team with a good defensive line we aren't an elite team.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||We have played two top 30||
We have played two top 30 teams this year and lost both times. I'm not entirely sure where the confidence is coming from in regards to us being a top 4 team. You could make an argument that we deserve to be in a group behind the elite teams that includes 10 teams but to claim the eye test suggestt Michigan is a better team than Baylor or Oklahoma or LSU or Florida is pretty absured. We are a little over 2 weeks removed from getting lucky to beat minnesota at home, a team TCU handled pretty effectivley.

I'm not the one saying he didn't play well and I think he is still an NFL caliber player but I was just pointing out the excuse that it was an nfl qb throwing to an nfl wr doesn't really impact how an nfl scout should view that game. Lewis has been great this year but we have also faced a long line of turd qbs throwing to bad wrs behind offensive lines that are getting beat badly. All of those things also help so if he played well but not shutdown level the only time he has gone up against nfl talent this year that could be enough to bump him from a 1st or 2nd rd grade to a 3rd or 4th rd grade.

Who exactly would be throwing passes in the NFL if not NFL QB's. And who will he be covering if not NFL WR. Burbridge will probably go in the 3rd or 4th rd and Cook will almost certainly not be a first year starter so if you are an NFL scout then seeing him play well but not shut down against the only nfl wr or qb he has faced this year would be a little flag and might be enough to drop him out of the 1st or 2nd rd.

Well if the goal is to be a future nfl DB stopping an nfl qb to nfl wr is sort of the measuring stick. I'm sure it matters a lot and is a reason I would be confident about a 1 loss Michigan team jumping a 1 loss Baylor or oklahoma state. But we still have 2 losses and overcoming that is going to take more than "well Baylor lost to a top 10 1 loss team only 2 weeks ago and Michigans loss to a 2 loss top 20 team happened 7 weeks ago and there other loss to a top 15 team happened even longer ago"

|2 weeks 4 days ago||Plausible went out the window||
Plausible went out the window when we lost to msu. We also need utah to lose just enough to not finish ahead of us but not enough to drop too far in the rankings. We also need stanford to beat ND to knock them out but not win out.
People keep trying to use last year with osu as precedent when saying a 2 loss Michigan could get in over a 1 loss big 12. Last year isn't helpful at all, last year both the big 12 teams and osu had 1 loss. They might penalize a big 12 champ but not so much that they wouldn't get in over a 2 loss team. In this situation where everything goes perfectly for michigan in the big ten (iowa wins out, msu only has a loss to osu, northwestern wins out, and osu only has a loss to us) We would finish with 2 top 10-15 wins (iowa and osu) and 1 additional top 20 win (northwestern, maybe 2 if byu wins out but I'm not counting on them getting any love). Compare that to lets say a 1 loss baylor who would conceviably also have two top 10-15 wins and only 1 loss. Is a a win over northwestern really going to overcome an extra loss? I don't think so.
edited to add I'm saying where teams will be considered in the final ranking not where they are at the time the game happened. So Iowa might be #5 going into the championship game but if we were to embarass them like we would need to they would probably drop out of the top 10 because nobody actually thinks they are good and there best win would be northwestern.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||They will get jumped by||
They will get jumped by Baylor or oklahoma state if either of those teams wins out. While it would be hilarious for msu to lose to psu we still need osu to win that game if we want any shot of making the playoffs. Having osu and iowa be back to back top 5 wins is a lot better than a top 10-15 win and a top 5 win over an iowa team people don't actually think is good.

The screens worked so well because of the way Rutgers was selling out to stop the run. They slant their d line like crazy, have linebackers and safeties filling immediatley, there weren't reading and reacting they were just attacking. That makes a traditional run up the middle pretty hard but opens up the edge and screen game. I don't really care how we get our yards as long as we get them. Rutgers played a stupid defense predicated entirely on stopping runs up the middle and the result was we scored 49 points and pulled our starters in the 4th.

I'd imagine our run game will continue to struggle the rest of the year until Rudock can make a secondary pay for putting their safeties in the box. Winning the psu and osu game could pretty easily come down to whether rudock can hit chesson one of the couple times he gets open for a bomb. If he does that against msu or utah we probably win those games and it will be true for the other good teams we play too.
PSU's secondary isn't super terrifying so our wr's should still be able to get open against them, I'm not really entirely sure how me move the ball against osu yet.

Its been one year and even then it was considered a suprise that a 1 loss osu got in over tcu and baylor despite everyone thinking they were better teams than osu. So yes they have shown that when other p5 teams have the same record as the top big 12 team the big 12 gets punished for a crap schedule. It would be another thing entirely for a 2 loss big ten champ to get in over a 1 loss big 12 champ.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Why do we jump them? In his||
Why do we jump them? In his scenario we jump from 12th to 8th with MSU going from 10th to 10th with a win while 3 teams in from of them lose. Why wouldn't they be 7th with UM 8th? And if head to head isn't as important why would osu drop below michigan? The fact that games happen in week 12 or 13 as compared to week 6 or 7 isn't a legitimate reason for where teams end up.
So as Michigan fans you can devalue head to head which might justify Michigan over msu but could then end up with osu being above michigan or you value head to head and put michigan above osu but msu over michigan.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Lot of optimism in this||
Lot of optimism in this post. Only problem is a 1 loss baylor or tcu could still get in over michigan (1 loss osu got in over them last year but that was same number of losses, the comitte might hate baylors schedule and drop them but that is counting on a lot. You would be talking about a team with 1 loss to a top 25 team with 2 wins over top 15 teams against a resume with 2 wins over top 10 teams but two losses as well.
Not to mention dropping msu 4 spots after a loss on the road to a top 4 team might be aggressive unless they get blown out. There is still no real justification for Michigan being over msu either unless you believe when the loss happened is a legitimate thing to bring up, especially when both games after the half way point of the season. What is your justification for Michigan jumping msu the last week of the season other than blind homerism You have msu at #10 going into the last week, 3 teams in front of them losing while they win and them being at #10 in the next poll? Thats crazy talk and would be a terrible decision even as a michigan fan. It would be funny but it would be dumb.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Michigan isn't making the||
Michigan isn't making the playoffs. The only scenario where M is able to pass MSU in the polls to get the big ten championship involve all the teams in front of msu staying in front of msu. So sure Clemson losing to a turd team could open the door but it would mean michigan state moving up a spot too. If msu only has a loss to osu on the road they will almost certainly finish the season like top 8 (they will move up in the next 2 weeks as big 12 and sec teams beat each other in front of them). Michigan getting into the top 8 will be tough with two losses. Our best bet is for MSU to stay as close as possible as to where they are now until osu and that means no major upsets we would need to get into the playoff.
I guess unless clemson loses to south carolina or in the acc championship game.

|3 weeks 4 days ago||I would hate if michigan lost||
I would hate if michigan lost a home game against a rival. A good basketball arena during a big run in an important game is the best atmosphere in sports. When the dagger 3 falls to complete a big comeback or take a 10 point lead in a game and the opposing coach calls timeout its a bissful thing.
I was at a MD-Duke game onetime where MD went on a run and K called a timeout and the crowd kept cheering and getting louder throughout the time out and were actually louder on the next possession than when it got called. It was unreal.
Also it won't be the most expensive arena ever built, it says its the most expensive in the NHL and even that is a little iffy since the Barclays arena cost more, it just wasn't technically built as a hockey arena first. Still looks good though.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Why would they have||
Why would they have heartburn? Chances are there will be an undefeated Clemson, one of TCU or Baylor will finish with only one loss and a better resume than us, in the SEC you will get either 1 loss bama, 1 loss florida or undefeated lsu over us and then whoever wins the stanford-ND game will probably finish with 1 loss and a better resume than us. Hell an unefeated Memphis would have a better resume too. The playoffs went out the door with the second loss.

How the fuck is this true? The big ten sucks. Penn State is recruiting well but MD fans know better than anyone he isn't actually that good of a coach and Hoke has proven just recruiting well doesn't mean jack. OSU and Michigan are in a tier above but Maryland managed to win 10+ games and go to a bcs bowl with Miami and Florida State in their conference. Rutgers is trash and msu is probably a 6 win team if they didn't have connor cook this year. Its a perfectly good job for an up and coming coach who can recruit. Plus every year you get to play 3 teams from the crap that is the west side of the division.
If Baylor can have a run of success in a division with oklahoma and texas I'm pretty sure Maryland can pull it off in the big ten. They aren't in a worse situation than msu, if you gave maryland and msu the same level of coach maryland would do better over the next 10 years.

People just keep brining it up like they expect it to happen but I think its just not his coaching strong suit. Still super excited for the season.

I don't get the rich rod love, he isn't a clean coach and was notorious for taking academically iffy guys, suspending guys for a half or not at all if a big game was coming up, etc. More importantly He is a guy who was won more than 10 games 4 times in 14 years of coaching and 3 of those came coaching in the shit of the leftover Big east after VT, Miami, and BC had left for the ACC. IT was pretty much the MAC when he won there. His tenure at Arizona goes 8-5, 8-5, 10-4, and he already has 3 losses this year before playing utah, usc, the corpse of oregon, etc. If a 52 year old who has one good season over the last 9 years is the best Miami can do they have fallen a lot further than I thought.

First of all HGTV is great, I'm with the other guys who watch that more than ESPN. And this isn't good news for the big ten if ESPN doesn't have money to drive up bidding for the big ten network.
When bundling and sweetheart deals for conference fees do fall through I think we will need to see a re-organization of schools. Sure you can talke about traditional rivalries but the schools that carry enough interest to drive revenue need to stop subsidizing the shit programs and form a super conference. I'm pretty sure I can figure out how to care more about a game against Texas than one against Purdue and I'm sure Texas fans feel the same way about playing Michigan or Iowa State. If a school can't make money on its own I'm not sure why getting to be in the same conference as Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State means they should get a cut of the pie.

|4 weeks 6 days ago||It all depends on what||
It all depends on what happens other places whether a 2 loss team gets in. Lets just say one of LSU or Bama win out, TCU or Baylor wins out, and Clemson wins out. Those three spots would be gauranteed over 2 loss Big ten champion. Then you could have a 1 loss pac 12 champion and a 1 loss ND who would also get in over a 2 loss big ten champion. It isn't happening this year. I also don't really understand how people think a 2 loss Michigan is jumping a 1 loss msu. I get that losing at the right time matters but this would be the two resumes (some projection involved)
Utah L Western Michigan W
oregon state W Oregon W
UNLV W Air Force W
BYU W Central Michigan W
Maryland W Purdue W
Northwestern W Rutgers W
MSU L Michigan W
Minnesota W Indiana W
Rutgers W Nebraska W
Indiana W Maryland W
Penn State W OSU W
Ohio State W PSU W
In this situation both teams would have a win over a top 10 team (OSU for us, us for msu) Michigan would have losses to two top 15 teams while msu would have a loss to a top 10 team. PSU might be ranked but they would have 4 losses in this situation and both teams would have beaten them. Our second best win this year would probably be BYU, our resume isn't that strong. No way we leapfrog a 1 loss team who beat us with a second best win of a team ranked like 18th.
|5 weeks 2 days ago||I'm tired of people||
I'm tired of people questioning the last play but I'm also tired of people saying we played well enough to win, especially on offense. Every play matters and the last play might have been a fluke play but it still counts and the reason it mattered is because the offense had a bad game. That was the biggest takeaway from this game, our offense doesn't exist against good defensive lines. 4 possesions that started inside their 50 resulted in 13 points. That isn't playing well enough to win and its the real reason we lost.
Unless we get that figured out we lose to both psu and osu. Psu because while hackenberg isn't good their special teams aren't so bad we will get to start on their half of the field most of the time and osu because their offense will score.

Holding doesn't get called all the time, and while it happened on a play they scored on they might have scored a td anyways.And yes while the interception was a big play I don't think its as bad of a call as Michigan fans see it. Lewis is trailing Burbridge, had his hand on him and wr went down, thats going to always be a call, its the risk you run by being a little grabby down the field, I thought it was PI live too and don't blame the refs for that one despite thinking they were terrible.

confused how the teams in 3rd and 4th have higher average speeds. Is that a result of time penalties, mechanical failure forced pit stops? Based off the average speed it seems like we are getting beat on strategy not car performance.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||I think the refs sucked but||
I think the refs sucked but my guess is that this exxagerates the point a fair amount. For one this is really only looking at Michigan gripes or really big plays. I'm sure there are a couple calls we aren't even thinking about that went our way that shouldn't have. I also think some of the percentages this gets called are pretty high. On the not real interception at real time speed the play looks a lot like the pass interference chesson got, it is going to get called interference 90% of the time in todays football, it just sucks to be a defender sometime. Same thing with the pick on Peppers, that rarely gets called which is why its effective.
The real issue with this analysis this though is the expected points value. Michigan couldn't score td's when starting their drive inside the msu 40 most of the time, the offense wasn't good enough to expect that many points to be scored, the refs were probably more like a 6 point swing but the real issues is that our offense sucked in this game.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||There is a zero percent||
There is a zero percent chance a 2 loss Michigan is ranked higher than a 1 loss msu who beat michigan at michigan and if it did happen it would be stupid. Michigan would have one win over a ranked team most likely, maybe 2 if byu stays ranked, how is that a good strenght of schedule?

Even if Indiana somehow won (they won't) I still don't see them getting to 4 losses. It just isn't happening to what is still a top 20 team.

Wasn't Bo's coaching tree pretty terrible? Carr had never been a head coach anywhere and Gary Moeller had failed at Illinois. Doesn't sound like there was much of a successful tree to chose from.

I wasn't a fan of rudock for the first three games and am happy to be wrong. But those statements weren't wrong about his first three games. He played great yesterday and here's to hoping that's what he looks like for the rest of the year.

This team is a lot like his Michigan teams. Put up a lot of points with some defensive warning signs against bad teams and show up small time in the big games before scoring a little late to make it look closer at the end then the game was.

Glad to see RR took care of that defense thing. Today has been all about teams blowing leads in astonishing ways. Good to see utah doing well though.

Lol didn't realize pointing out the UCLA is a better team than Michigan this year and that BYU played them to a virtual draw a week ago while our offesne sputtered in the second half against UNLV isn't inspiring me to jump to BYU is over rated and we are going to stomp them meant I didn't root for Michigan.
Michigan should win this game but I don't think BYU is over rated and Rudock has been actually bad this year. Not just a dissapointing average but a poor qb. Hope he turns it around gets back to the average he should be but since he hasn't shown it yet I'm not expecting it to suddenly happen against the best defense we've played in the last three weeks.
|9 weeks 2 days ago||I don't get why people||
I don't get why people dislike the you suck chant but are cool with and support Hockey chanting just a stream of profanities. Which you can't even claim is clever since it was stolen from Cornell.
Also the mud bowl has been a joke for a few years. Since SAE got kicked out of IFC they could only play other non IFC 'frats' so greek life cared way less, way less people turned out and the sororities playing there also stopped.
|9 weeks 2 days ago||Ah yes that 1 pt loss in a||
Ah yes that 1 pt loss in a game they led for most of the game on the road against a better team than Michigan clearly would lead you to believe this. Sure if Jake Rudock wasn't a turd then you could argue that without the 3 picks the game woulnd't have been close. But since Josh Rosen has looked better than Rudock this year I'm not sure why you would think he would outplay that line against the same defense.
Then you have the fact that UCLA has better receivers, a better rb, and probably a better o-line than michigan and the fact that myles jack is better than anyone on our defense and I'm not really sure where that overwhelming confidence comes from. We might win, but its way closer to toss up than it is to Michigan winning in dominant fashion.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||Yeah that failed 3rd and||
Yeah that failed 3rd and short briand clipped looked exactly like the failed 4th down from Utah and Smith made the same mistake of not following his blocker to the outside for an easy gain. The reason I think he doesn't do this is because he doesn't have the speed to get outside before the defense gets through the hole. It makes me think we shouldn't call that play for Smith but its also the reason Smith will never get above above average as a running back. If you can't cut and outrun a guy you are limited to about 10 yard run maximums if things are blocked correctly, 5 yards if they aren't. That isn't a good maximum to have.

Its actually a really easy schedule, we just aren't very good.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||Yeah your opinion of Rudock||
Yeah your opinion of Rudock tracks with mine. He should have had a good game against Utah, their secondary is trash and run d was their specialty and he didn't play well. He hasn't just not been good, he has been bad and will cost this team more wins than just Utah if he keeps playing this way.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||Obviously this blog isn't bad||
Obviously this blog isn't bad but everyone has blind spots and this year it seems like this blogs is defending rudock because he is the best option not because he is good. If Devin gardner of last year is on this team nothing is different.
We saw what happened to our offense when the running game didn't work and it's not pretty. Nothing in the last two games suggests rudock will be able to move the ball when the running game doesn't work and that means losing to any good team. Seems like rudock has very little upside.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||It's not suprising Harbaugh||
It's not suprising Harbaugh defends his guy. He clearly doesn't think there is a better option and wants to keep criticism from the outside down and confidence up. 5 interceptions through 3 games is bad any way you slice it.
The writer of this blog have no real incentive to defend what can only be seen as a really bad performance against a really bad team
|10 weeks 1 day ago||Man the writers of this blog||
Man the writers of this blog are in the tank for rudock. Swirling winds aren't what cause late throws and missed 5 yard passes to the flat. Defense looked good, we will know a lot more about this team after byu. Still don't really know anything.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||Rudock was bad today, he goes||
Rudock was bad today, he goes through his progressions too slowly, is late on a late of throws, is a hesitant decision maker and can't throw the deep ball worth a damn. I'm not super concerned about the OL because it is almost impossible to generate consistent push with both safeties in the box and no team with any talent is going to worry about getting beat over the top.
It's pathetic and as long as Rudock is our starting qb we have no chance against any above average team. Rudock may make us less likely to lose to bad teams but he gives us zero to no shot against the good ones.
|10 weeks 2 days ago||Thats stupid. Beilein came||
Thats stupid. Beilein came to Michigan from WVU partly because he didn't feel he could get good enough players to actually win at WVU. Recruiting matters, being a good coach is great, being a good coach with more talented players than your opponent is even better.

Rudock just isn't very good. You don't lose your starting job at Iowa just because of a bad OC. If he can be mediocre it is still ok but the optimism from the off season is gone in terms of his taking a step forward playing on a better team. He is who is and it isn't very good.

The fact that Georgia hasn't won any national championships is a huge indictment of Richt as an actual coach. Just so much talent every year. When that job opens up it is going to be so interesting, they make the right here and they can dominate. |11 weeks 2 days ago||The only thing that makes me||
The only thing that makes me nervous is that I don't think Utah is a good team. Doesn't seem like they have any WR's. Our WR's looked good but they also have a bad secondary we couldn't take advantage of. And while the defensive line was very good at the pass rush thing they weren't all that great at run defense last year. I feel fine about this season moving forward but by the end of the season I think we look back on this Utah as a missed oppurtunity against a below average team.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||This might be a tall ask but||
This might be a tall ask but any chance this piece could also examine opponents so we could get a better idea of how teams are really performing. For example I bet the MSU game would look much less close than the box score as would the Minny game. If you track that over the year I think it could give a better idea of how teams fare against common opponents that removes more random things like where a fumble bounces.

|11 weeks 3 days ago||The thing that annoys me most||
The thing that annoys me most is when boston fans take the smug position of this only happens because they are winning. Plenty of other teams go through stretches of winning better than the Patriots have without everyone claiming they are dirty as shit. The giants have won 3 of 5 world series. Nobody ever accused the Jordan bulls of cheating. The Yankees dominated baseball and everybody hated them but nobody accused them of stealing signals or having to act differently around them than every other team in the league. The Patriots both won a lot and cheated more than everyone else, both things are true.

Seriously. RS sophmores have already been in the program for 2 years at that point. Since RS juniors can declare for the draft if they are good that means those guys are playing. It happens all over the country and both osu and msu have done it perfrectly fine in the last couple years doing it.

But this is why people were confused when we took a second center in this class. We are going to have a ton of big guys on a team that generally only plays one at a time and the resulting scholarship crunch means we couldn't wait out our top targets decision despite being in the top 2 for him.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Burke was ranked 84th in the||
Burke was ranked 84th in the country when he stepped on campus according to espn. Our lineup during the national championship run was all top 100 guys. Burke was 84th, Robinson was 18th, Mcgary was 27th, Stauskas was 76th, Hardaway was 93rd I think you get the idea. This whole Michigan won with lower rated guys thing is crap. Michigan won with all top 100 guys playing. Jordan Morgan is a great story, he also got 8 minutes in the championship game.
We have brought in one top 100 player in the last two years. In the two years before our run we brought in five. We have less talent now and the results will reflect that, despite how good of a coach beilein because better talent coached by the same guy performs better than worse talent coached by the same guy.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Burke Stauskas and Mcgary||
Burke Stauskas and Mcgary were all top 100 recruits when they stepped on campus. Mcgary was at one point ranked in the top 5. Beilein didn't win with lower level recruits. He did a good job of identifying late bloomers (Burke, Robinson, Levert) but they all blew up in high school at a later point and stuck to their commitments.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Its been 2 players. I love||
Its been 2 players. I love Beilein but he has done great work with 2 pg's lets not oversell it. Trey Burke is a great story but there was another pg in that class who just wiped out. Walton is great but hasn't had a big enough year to point to for recruiting wins.

Yup every other school in the ncaa is breaking the rules but Michigan isn't. Keep telling yourself that. Notice Stanford is still in Winston's top 3? Yeah I don't think that was the issue.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Yeah it really sucked when we||
Yeah it really sucked when we got that mitch mcgary guy after a long a recruitment. The top recruits take their time. Beilein is overreacting to Battle and now Winston will almost certainly wind up at MSU. There is no other way to look at 2016 as something other than a failure of recruiting.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||I'm saying Rudock and Chesson||
I'm saying Rudock and Chesson should have made the same read. The decision to take a half step to give his qb more space to make the throw was the right decision. Rudocks decision to throw the ball to the back of the end zone was the wrong decision. Chesson was anticipating the ball being put to the middle of the endzone because that is where it should be put in that situation than has to re-adjust when Rudock doesn't put the ball there. I think Rudock tried to make too perfect of a throw and it cost him. Cathing a ball out of bounds isn't worth anything more than having a ball go over your head, not sure why that is preferable to you.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||He slowed down a bit because||
He slowed down a bit because of where he was on the field. That ball landed about a foot in front of the back of the endzone, in a full sprint Chesson would have had to worry about dragging his back to make sure stayed in bounds, taking a half step to be in the middle of the end zone was the right move, Rudock just threw the ball too far. It happens but I think Harbaugh is mostly trying to defend his guy from receiving all of the backlash for the loss.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||While Perry could have run a||
While Perry could have run a much better route (the utah receiver compared against is also a freshman unless my memory is failing me) Rudock was brought in specifically to read what happened and not make that throw. He watched the entire route occur and when it is covered that is what going through your progression is for, he isn't about to take a sack. We brought in a fifth year guy who is low on interceptions to avoid not just forcing the ball into your primary read and he did just that.
This pick is more disturbing than the overthrow interception because it shows poor decision making rather than a bad throw, regardless of the route being run effectively. It also isn't that isolated of an incident. Does pretty much the same thing vs maryland in this highlight at the 2:05 mark.

|12 weeks 2 days ago||It does work. I watched it||
It does work. I watched it work to win a superb owl after the miners had just run all over 3 teams. I can't tell you why other coaches dont do it but the Ravens defensive players are very upfront about their strategy. If you leave them unblocked and the qb makes himself a potential runner you hit him every time.
|12 weeks 2 days ago||I hated the play calls on 3rd||
I hated the play calls on 3rd and 4th and 1. The zone read is really not as difficutl to stop as everyone makes it out to be. Just hit the damn quarterback every time. Not a single coach in the country wants their start QB getting 20 times a game. Tell the unblocked end to hit the QB every time and go 10 on 10 with the oline and running back. If they average more than 4 yards a carry doing that they were going to beat you anyways because that means their oline is dominating your dline and linebackers. All of these ofensive sets are working because they also are really simplifying the game for the offense. Do the same thing for the defense and eliminate the hesitation that comes with making a decision. Just destroy the QB. The ravens do it in the NFL and they haven't had a zone read team go off on them offensively.
|12 weeks 2 days ago||Also I'm guessing the UFR's||
Also I'm guessing the UFR's are going to be real tough on the LB's. A lot of missed arm tackles, they looked unimpressive dropping in zones and were getting torched like they had never seen a zone read before.
|12 weeks 2 days ago||Yeah he got beat like a drumb||
Yeah he got beat like a drumb in the passing game, though the pass interference was pretty weak.
|12 weeks 2 days ago||Obviously the most||
Obviously the most dissapointng aspect last night was Rudock. They had 10 guys in the box and our WR's did get open deep and he just missed them, generally without pressure in his face. He also got happy feet a couple times and bailed out of a perfectly sound pocket. Deveon Smith got good yards after contact but has never seen a cut back he likes and that is a problem.
The thing I was most dissapointed with on the defensive was the handling of the read option, both by the players and coaches. We were totally unprepared for it going into the game and never really adjusted either. I'm a big fan of what the Ravens do to stop it. Hit the QB every time. You take away the reading part and have the unblocked guy hit the QB every time. Trust your defense to not give up more than 3 yards 10 on 10 and eliminate the threat of the QB running. Just look at the TD run, the whole defense was flowing to the running back, if it had been a hand off would probably have been a 4 yard gain and a DE can generally take a QB on flat feet shuffling horizontally. If they just attack.
