Just wondering, what our are chances of making the ncaa tourny. what would we need to do in the big ten tourny? |
| 1 week 21 hours ago | I mean this home schedule |
I mean this home schedule sucks but it's not really that much worse than this year, we had michigan state at home, which yeah rivalry game and then what? Iowa? yeah there is more history but in my honest opinion maryland will be a better team than Iowa at that point. Utah is better than air force. I honestly don't think that 2014 is that much worse than this years was and at least there are 7 games. The fact of the matter is that about 3/4's of the big ten provide no excitement so any year without osu is going to have to bring in an out of conference game to spice it up which is what will be happening starting with arkansas and va tech. |
| 2 weeks 2 days ago | That wouldn't work, ESPN |
That wouldn't work, ESPN could not afford the contracts they have with only charging $5 because probably only a quarter of current cable subscribers would pay for it, especially considering the NFL is on network telivision |
| 2 weeks 2 days ago | The idea that you as a |
The idea that you as a customer would be saving money in a pay per channel market is a fallacy. If, for example you wanted ESPN as one of your channels, well without having every cable subscriber automatically paying in, in order to cover the contracts they have been handing out and to maintain programming, ESPN would most likely charge you like $50 just for that single channel. Smaller side chanels like fx and tbs would either cease to exist, or would probably be bundled up with their parent chanels, like they are now, so you can either pay $20 for just CBS or $30 for a bundle. At the end of the day, a pay per channel model isn't as appealing as everyone here makes it out to be and chances are anyone who wanted to watch sports would be paying at least as much as they are now for only half the channels. |

I like where a lot of recruiting battles are going but I am confused about people can continually read quotes from Hand about how VT feels like home and bud foster is his favorite coach and think michigan is the leader. Am I missing something? Liking a professor is not better than saying a place feels like home to me. |
| 3 weeks 5 days ago | The students have been |
The students have been pathetic for non prime games, and I am a current student. However given this fuck the Athletic Department for raising ticket prices to what they are. I understand comparatively to the rest of the stadium its a steal and blah blah its absurd that if a student wants to attend both football and either one of basketball or hockey they would have to pay over $500. I don't know about the rest of you but I had to pay for everything that wasn't tuition, that means rent, food, textbooks, and other such things. The AD is pricing out any student that isn't just funded by their parents, and my guess is that most of the people who didn't show up were the students who didn't have to pay for the tickets themselves and that won't change with a ticket increase. If the university cares more about money than students, just eliminate the student section, other than that this price increase does nothing but price out a portion of the student body. |

Great fundraiser, a little iffy on being open to student issues, lots of student orgs don't like her but I would say a net positive for the university during her tenure. She takes a lot of flack about putting fundraising and buidling imporvements over student well being. But that just some students opinions, nbobody thinks she was overall terrible for the school. |

Look to the story of the hiker who was taken in Iran and accused of being a spy. Best of luck to him, don't necessarily think it is a great idea as 2nd round contracts are not gauranteed and I see hardaway as more likely in the D league than in the NBA, but hey if someone offered me millions to do my dream job i would probably leave before finishing too. Hope I'm wrong and timmy makes it big in the league. Now we need a gr3 and mcgary to stay and some big growth from gr3 if we want to make a run next year, but that discussion is for another day. |

Take it for what it is worth but the people I know around the team (I'm a current student) are pretty confident Hardaway has not made a decision, and that as of the beginning of the tourny run planned on going back. His father wants him to finish and he likes being here. Obviously all hearsay but its hearsay from my friends and I like what it says. On the other hand burke is pretty much gone no doubt. |
| 7 weeks 1 day ago | If a booster thinks you are a |
If a booster thinks you are a really intelligent engineering student and would do great things as a u of m alum and says I will give you money to attend the university of michigan is that a violation of moral integrity? There is nothing technically wrong about it but it is the exact same situation and I would never call a kid who took that money someone who lacked moral integrity. Who excused Webber? He broke a rule and as a result has been denied contact to the school that according to the rest of the fab five he actually really does care about. But to vilify, refuse to ever forgive and say he has no moral integrity is such an over the top response I have to believe you don't actually believe it because who can have that much hate in them over a person they have never met nor truly understand what he went through. Furthermore, I believe that responses such as yours are the reason he has never apologized, because you attack him as a person he is defensive and does not want to make you happy, it may be petty, but news flash so are you. |
| 7 weeks 1 day ago | This sort of over the top |
This sort of over the top reaction is why nobody can take you seriously. I never said the school did not deserve to be punished, or that a rule was not broken. What I said was that I blame ed martin and not chris webber. In these situations I never blame the student athlete. I don't think reggie bush, or the ohio st players, or the auburn players are bad people with no ethical code or moral compass like you seem to do. There is a difference between acknowledging wrongdoing and looking at the circumstances around it and just blindly hating. I hope your job does not require any sort of logical thought, analytical analysis, or empathy, because you seem incapable of all it. |
| 7 weeks 1 day ago | I mean if you really want to |
I mean if you really want to get into the "rules are rules no matter how much you dislike them" argument it was mlk that said an unjust law is no law at all. I mean rosa parks never apologized for sitting on the front of the bus (not trying to equate rosa parks with webber, just talking about the rules are rules argument). I never said what webber did was smart or right, I just said trying to vilify him and make him out to be some secretly bad person (which is more or less what the poster I replied to originally was doing) as a result of this is an over the top reaction, thats it. webber isn't special, it is just in these situations with 17 or 18 year old kids getting paid by boosters I never blame the players. I don't think what the ohio guys did makes them bad people, I don't reggie bush is a bad person either. And lets be honest, the santions hurt the school for about 5 years, the 15 years after that were just bad hires. Maryland was hurt with worse sanctions after the len bias tragedy but hired gary williams and won a national title 10 years after. |
| 7 weeks 1 day ago | Holy shit a young kid who |
Holy shit a young kid who took money and knew he was going to get in troulbe lied to try to avoid getting in trouble? That never happens, what a shitty person he must be. He made some mistakes when he was younger. Webber didn't kill the basketball program Ed martin did. Hating a child because he took money offered to him that made his life better is just absurd. This sort of response is most likely why Weber refuses to apologize (this is purely conjecture), when people hate you, you tend to react defensively. And seriously people, Weber was not the first or last player to recieve "improper" benefits as a result of playing for Michigan. |
| 7 weeks 1 day ago | Webber didn't cheat, he was a |
Webber didn't cheat, he was a high school kid who was offered things he could never have purchased on his own and took it to make his life better. You've done the same thing your entire life most likely, you just weren't an athlete so when your dad's friend gives you a job its not a violation of some inane rule. The system is broken hating Weber is asinine. |

Yeah I'm sure a 6'8 180 pound center with no midrange game who can barely dunk would do great in the nba. This is clearly a publicity stunt and she clearly would never legitimately be the best player on the mavericks board. Blake mclimans has a better shot of making the nba. |

The word around the basketball team is that hardaway loves college and plans on being back next year. Obviously if we win a title that might change, but I'd make that trade. |
| 7 weeks 5 days ago | For people saying not to use |
For people saying not to use the tournament I get what you are saying but at the end of the day when you look at the fnal four in most years it is made up of teams who were there all year. Just look at this years elite 8, duke, l'ville, syracuse, michigan, florida, osu, marquette, wichita state. Of those teams only two spent most of the year not ranked in the top 10 and I think that is true most years. I honestly believe that the style of play that is predominant in the big ten is not good for top teams. If you have a better team it behooves you to get more possesions. The big ten was certainly the deepest league in the country this year, but that doesn't mean the top 2 or 3 teams in the country played in it so it depends which measure you care about more. |

If you score 10 points a game but your poor defense is responsible for giving up 12 you are a liability. It's obviously not as simple as that but I'm at the point where I think even when stauskas is scoring points his defense is such a liability that he should be coming off the bench, we didn't lose to penn st because our offense wasn't clicking. |

| 12 weeks 1 day ago | That's loser talk, weak |
That's loser talk, weak defense and an inability to handle a weak press lost us that game, bad refs just provide a convient excuse. |
| 12 weeks 1 day ago | It isn't high road bullshit, |
It isn't high road bullshit, the refs weren't good but we gave up 82 points to the worst team in the big ten, thats embarrasing and I don't give a fuck what the refs did. This loss is embarassing and is highlighting the fact that this team just doesn't have what it tkaes for whaterver reason to play the defense necessary to really win anything of note this year. |
| 12 weeks 1 day ago | Stop bitching about refs, |
Stop bitching about refs, this team plays straight up garbage defense and its time to acknowledge we aren't winning anything this year. Yeah we can and probably will win this game but we aren't going to win the big ten regular season or tourny title and will get bounced by the first good frontcourt we see in the ncaa tourny. It sucks because we should be better than this and there is no reason our defense should be this bad. |

How many of those are 3 play middle linebacker guys? burfict was out of shape at the combine and got himself turned around. I'm not saying te'o should go undrafted, you just don't take a guy in the first round you have to hide in pass coverage. |
| 12 weeks 2 days ago | In 1997 mlb weren't asked to |
In 1997 mlb weren't asked to cover TE that could run 4.4's. It was a different game and Lewis was a liability in the passing game for the last couple years but made up for it with his ability to align himself and the rest of the defense based off diagnosing the offense. Unless you think te'o is as good at diagnosing an offense as ray lewis then that 40 time is a huge red flag. |
| 12 weeks 3 days ago | I think its strange that it |
I think its strange that it is distinctly possible that Indiana could win the big ten but we would finish ranked above them and get a #1 seed. If michigan wins out and indiana only loses to us they win the big ten but we would be ranked higher. After that its possible both teams could drop out in the semi's of the conference tourney which would really cause us to sweat on selection sunday about a #1 seed since it would really be up in the air. |

If you want to watch a great matchup #1 loyola is hosting #2 maryland today at 1:30 and i'm pretty sure its on nbc sports or something like that. And yes the state of Maryland does have 3 of the top 5 in the country right now, lacrosse is kind of a big deal there. |
| 13 weeks 14 hours ago | The university has an |
The university has an incredibly strict policy regarding in-state vs out of state even among other state universities. They do this because they make so much more on out of state students, the current plan is for the school to actually be 50%-50% in state vs out of state sometime in the next few years. The fact that they would do this really is not surprising. Mary sue has been good for the school in a lot of ways but under her leadership the endowment has grown but the amount of aide given to students has hardly kept up with tuition increases. Apparently the focus of the next fundraising campaign is student aide so hopefully there will be a change in this soon. |
| 13 weeks 5 days ago | Have played a tough schedule |
Have played a tough schedule but no real marquee wins. pitt and k-state are solid, minnesota on the road is good but looks less impressive now than it did. I'd probably have indiana, duke (better wins), miami, gonzaga, syracuse, florida, msu, and possibly arizona though they have no real great wins either. That puts us at 7th or 8th and you could still make an argument for kansas though their schedule is easier. I'm not saying we are worse than all those teams, just that our resume matches up with those and how you choose to shuffle them around is mostly bias. |

Because if they haven't I think its absurd they are trying to degrade this man with so few facts. |

So now being at a scene is equivalent to being guilty? The only thing he was ever charged with was obstruction of justice. Not to mention you say he wasn't convicted, well he wasn't even charged with the murder. Can I say unequivocally that Lewis had no part in the murders? Of course not. But you can't say he certainly did it and just got lucky nobody came forward as a witness, he was a high profile athlete, of course he would be recognized. Our justice system is designed to try to avoid putting innocent people in prison. There was not enough evidence to try or convict ray lewis on murder and so he was not. I just do not understand why exactly everyone has decided they know better than people who were actually a part of the case? |
| 15 weeks 20 hours ago | Why? Because I pointed out |
Why? Because I pointed out that nobody cracking jokes in this thread has any idea what happened that night and based off a few news reports has decided a man is guilty of murder. Or the fact that they refuse to acknoledge that despite never being even charged with murder he has never had anything off the field that suggests poor behavior since that night and has had a huge impact on the Baltimore charity scene and has made a positive difference in a lot of people's lives. You guys like talking about what is right about sports? How about listening to Lewis's speach after the loss to the patriots last year where he talks about how there are bigger things than sports in reference to a local high school student he had befriended who had passed away a week before the game. I don't have a problem with people not liking him for his antics, or his constant screaming about religion, that all makes sense. Saying possibly the greatest linebacker of all time shouldn't have a statue because you decided he is guilty of a crime he was never even charged with is just bitter. |
| 15 weeks 21 hours ago | Hey guys here is a thought, |
Hey guys here is a thought, how about everyone stops pretending like they no more about the case than prosecution who didn't try him for murder or the jury who didn't find anyone guilty of the crime because there was not enough evidence. Apparently being arrested is now equivalent to a conviction for a group of people who never looked over the facts of the case. If lewis had been convicted of murder and still had a statue built that would be an issue. As it is he was never convicted so now everyone is just making assumptions based off a case they don't really know anything about. Bravo to all just justice above all internet posters who conviently look past fun facts like our criminal justice system never charged him with murder. And before anyone compares this to OJ, he actually went to trial because the prosecution actually thought he did it.

I didn't say they suck, i said they play terrible basketball, you can win and still be painful to watch, which this game was. Also wooo final 4's thats totally the same thing as national championships. OSU lost twice to sec teams in bcs championships, the big ten doesn't look any better in footbal because a team managed to get to the championship game to lose. The only thing that matters prestige wise is championships, if your teams aren't winning them then you can't say your brand of playing the game is working. Not to mention many of those final fours were msu which played an up tempo style compared to the average big ten team. |
| 16 weeks 2 days ago | Lol you can play slow and not |
Lol you can play slow and not suck at basketball, wisconsin plays straight up ugly basketball and osu has an offense that is deshaun thomas or bricks, which is also ugly. And for the record, zero national championships since 2000 would suggest strongly that the slow down basketball employed by many in the big ten is not in fact all that effective. |

| 18 weeks 1 day ago | I was saying they are way |
I was saying they are way above purdue and such as a program, not in the last decade per se but based off of michigan football's last decade I think we can all understand not judging a teams historical importance based off one decade. And yeah I said an argument could be made, not a slam dunk, uconn has only been good under calhoun, no real history, ohio is not as good (see gary williams leaving ohio st to rebuild a maryland team still under probation) and maryland has more acc wins than nc state and is the reason the postseason is not limited to just conference champs anymore. But yeah the last decade hasn't been great mainly because gary refused to deal with the aau scene and thus missed on a lot of local talent. |
| 18 weeks 1 day ago | Maryland is at minimum a top |
Maryland is at minimum a top 15 program historically and could be argued top 10. There was a reason that during the coaching search every major basketball writer was talking about how it is a top 10-15 coaching job in the country. Maryland basketball got killed by the len bias tragedy and subsequent ncaa sanctions and it took a long time to rebuild but it is historically an important basketball school. Also considering that maryland sold out and packed its 18k stadium vs nc state and we only managed to get our 12k seat stadium about 3/4's full for our game against nc state and at least a 1/4 of the lower bowl was empty at tip for nebraska we shouldn't really be talking about other basketball programs. |

I get what you are saying but for me this isn't about seau in particular. Its using this news to spark a debate. The only way they can detect CTE is when people donate their brains, very few people do this and a lot of them are NFL players. Maybe this means CTE isn't actually caused by football and its just a poor sample or maybe it means that this is a large scale problem than can start as early as high school football but we don't know because we can't test it. I don't know enough about the science to answer those questions, I just want there to be a debate so somebody who can answer them is prompted to continue looking. |

| 19 weeks 12 hours ago | Did I ever say ban football? |
Did I ever say ban football? There are plenty of laws around car regulations and speed limits and other driving laws that make driving safer. There can be laws and other regulations that help make football safer, I believe we should talk about possibilites because despite loving football there is something about paying to see large men attempt to hit each other as hard as possible for my enjoyment that seems a little off to me. |
| 19 weeks 12 hours ago | The point of this debate |
The point of this debate isn't the health of nfl players, its the thousands of other people who play football too without getting paid millions. And its not about banning football, its about having a discussion to see if we can reduce risk. And people need to stop bringing up other jobs like policemen. Those jobs are a necessary part of a functioning society, football is not. Furthermore I'm sure if you could change rules around how fires and firemen interact that made being a fireman safer most people would support that, we can do that with football and its a discussion I think is worth having, you clearly don't. |

Not high school football players. The point I was trying to make with my first argument is that thousands of people take this risk without being payed for it and very few of those people really understand the risk football can pose to longterm mental health because these findings are relatively new. |
| 19 weeks 12 hours ago | I don't want to get into a |
I don't want to get into a long discussion with you on mgoblog about it because this isn't the place but there is a theory that an undercaste exists in the United States. An undercaste is defined as a group that is so removed from the rest of society economically and through other measures that no amount of hard work can raise them up the socioeconomic ladder. Obviously there would be exceptions, there were succesful black men and women during jim crow that didn't mean that was the norm. I happen to believe this theory but like I said this isn't really the place for this discussion and wasn't the point of my bringing up the point. I just thought it was a trend and something worth discussing when considering the impact of football in society and who is generally taking the risk. |

In terms of the physical dangers I think that is true but most of the information about long term brain damage is more recent and I think its a mistake to think that a lot of 10 year old kids are aware of what long term brain damage really means and a lot of parents who still aren't educated on the subject. |

That wasn't my point, I'm saying there is a trend and its worth considering when looking at footballs impact. I'm not calling for an end of football but there are suggestions for changing the culture of it, don't allow contact in youth football, take away helmets/pads (there are less concussions in rugby) and others. |

les miz is in no way a chick flick. Yeah sure its a musical so there is singing but the in the play version at least has some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. Also if you ever read the novel by victor hugo you would understand this is nowhere near a chick flick, it touches on the struggle of poverty, what people will sacrifice for their children, the struggle to reform after committing a crime and the obstacles faced by ex-felons, the desire to overthrow oppression and more. Seriously you may not want to see the movie but don't not see it because it is a chick flick. Also read the novel by victor hugo, he is a hell of writer and a lot of the things discussed in the novel closely mirror many problems still in society today. |

| 21 weeks 3 days ago | He didn't get there in time |
He didn't get there in time to go for the ball. If he goes for the ball its a touchdown. How can you tell a defender to not hit a guy and give up a tpuchdown? Thats just not allowing people to play defense, at a certain point you have to let them play with the risk of concussions or stop playing football. A lot of research is starting to show the small hits that offensive and defensive lineman take on the head while blocking is just as dangerous as the big hits. Are we going to eliminiate blocking from the sport and go 7 on 7? I understand wanting to protect players but a certain point you have to realize football is a dangerous sport, if you want to allow defense to exist you have to live with the consequences. If guys go low you are blowing out knees and ending carreers. This was a hit from a shoulder to a chest, you can't do it better if you are trying to prevent a completion and stop the touchdown. If this hit is too dangerous you might as well start playing flag football because you just can't stop a passing attack anymore. |

I'm a little surprised that i got downvoted for saying it wasn't 100% clear with no doubt that burke is the best pg. I think burke is certainly the overall better player and I would probably argue the best pg in the country, I was just pointing out that you could make an argument that carter-williams is having a great season as a pg, he also has two more steals a game then burke and is a better defender. I understand all the arguments but carter-williams is averaging a double double with points and assists, thats pretty impressive too, especially considering that I think burke has a more talented scoring cast around him. |
| 22 weeks 3 days ago | I love Burke but michael |
I love Burke but michael carter-williams for syracuse is averaging 10 assists a game. I'm not saying burke isn't better but its tough to say no doubt when another pg on a top 10 team is averaging 10 assists and burke only has one 10+ assist game in his career. |
| 22 weeks 4 days ago | What makes you think morris |
What makes you think morris would have gotten drafted higher? The year after he left was a deeper draft class and if Morris hasn't improved his outside shot after two years of focusing solely on basketball it wasn't going to improve while in college either. Morris is limited as a pg, he has relatively slow foot speed that can make him a liability on defense, isn't an explosive athlete or jumper, and has an incosistent at best outside shot which makes getting your own shot pretty difficult. Morris probably went as high as he was ever going to go in the draft, he made the right call. |
| 22 weeks 4 days ago | No he wouldn't, how would not |
No he wouldn't, how would not being able to practice everyday for the entire year against worse competition and worrying about not failing out of school made him a better basketball player? As long as he keeps getting contracts leaving was the right decision. It is one of the biggest falacies in sports that players improve more by staying in college when it comes to basketball. It isn't good to leave school and not get a contract, but if you get a contract it was the right decision. |

I mean as a public university it was founded and funded to benefit the state and residents of michigan. Out of state students tend to not stick around in the state, I know I plan on leaving, and thus don't really benefit the state. If michigan was a private school then the percentage wouldn't matter, but its a public school and thus should consider how its impacting the state and that includes what percentage of the class is in-state. |

not trying to be political but the university is currently aiming for a 50-50 split for out of state and in state because of the cuts in funding from the state have led tuition to become over 70% of the schools budget and they want to maintain high teacher salaries and providing the other amenities that makes michigan a top school. Have a problem with it tell your legislaturs both democrat and republican to stop cutting higher education spending every year. |

| 22 weeks 6 days ago | In your paragraph you said |
In your paragraph you said that Michigan desired a widespread athletic program. If that is the case then they would need to be paying for these sports regardless of title IX so I'm not really sure what your point was unless you are saying we wouldn't be funding any womens sports, or very few if given the choice. The fact of the matter is that we just had a 150 plus comment thread on womens volleyball, get regular updates on softball and I am pretty sure all of our most recent big ten titles our in women's sports. Personally I am ok with the department as a business model if it can keep funding these programs because I think its important. If you are only a football or basketball or hockey fan I can understand why this might not seem worth it to you but for me it is, title IX or not. |

| 23 weeks 23 hours ago | As someone who grew up a |
As someone who grew up a maryland fan and a current student at michigan it comes from a couple things. One is wiconsin, everybody hates watching wisconsin basketball and a lot of people just associate that with the big ten. Also, and this is just a perception thing I can't say if its true but most maryland fans think there is more physical talent in the acc. You see a lot more guys do cool impressive physical things and the big ten is seen as a more outside shooter uncordinated big man league. This leads to less transition basketball, so while on average a half court possession takes the same amount of time you see acc teams get out and run in transition a few more times a game and thats where the difference is pace comes from. Since transition baksetball is more exciting those 4 or 5 extra times a game makes the game more exciting. On a side note a lot of acc fans hate duke for turning into a mini mid major that just jacks a lot of threes for some of the same reasons. Its not about how succesful a team is, nobody is arguing wisconsin hasn't made being more boring than watching paint dry work for them, there just aren't or weren't historically a lot of 58-56 type games in the acc and those seem to happen kinda frequently in the big ten. So maybe its not how often shots go up but how often the shots go in that make people think the big ten is boring. |

Seeing playing time is good, but in theory the best coaches are in the nba, you practice all day for the entire year. The danger of stting on the bench is getting cut which is why guys should stay in college. Its better to be able to improve your game without having to worry about keeping your job but if you have a contract it is better for development to be in the nba. The development league does exist, its not like the lakers have to keep him on the bench. |

For everyone talking about how college football is pricing out its fans and all that these numbers are very misleading when looking at the totals. If you subtract new d1 schools from the list the attendance numbers have not really dropped all that much or even at all. Also consider that average attendance has not really dropped at the big time programs which is where the absurdly high prices are so its not ticket prices impacting attendance on a large scale on my way down texas for the bama game I got a ticket to see vandy vs. south carolina (who was ranked #9 ) for like $30. |

| 23 weeks 3 days ago | I mean yes but as a ravens |
I mean yes but as a ravens fan I can say that the ravens defense is more a symptom of lewis than a coordinator kind of like manning and the colts offense back in the day. Like 6 or 7 former coordinators got head coaching jobs after being the ravens defensive coordinator and most of them didn't do well and the defense kept chugging along. Fans were frustred with his decision to always go prevent at the end of games rather than sticking with what had been succsesful. He's been different at Michigan but pretty much think about how the defense looked against nd on the last drive of the night game and imagine that happened like 4 or 5 times over the year, it got frustrating. |
| 23 weeks 3 days ago | I mean yeah the defense is |
I mean yeah the defense is aging but our top 2 cb's are both young guys who got injured in webb and jimmy smith. Ray lewis is the heart of the defense so just not having him on the field hurts. Suggs was the entire pass rush by himself and he got injured and ngata has a bum leg. On offense you have ray rice, one of the top rb, vontae leach probably the top fb, a solid o-line good recievers in boldin and torrey smith. Team should be better, defense killed by injuries, offense got killed by a bad cordinator. |
| 23 weeks 3 days ago | Yesterday wasn't the game to |
Yesterday wasn't the game to judge him by, ravens fans have been calling for the guy to get fired for 2 years now, his terrible playcalling has been bailed out by good defense and ray rice being a monster but in the loss last week to pitt rice got 12 carries even though he was averaging like 5 yards per carry. Cameron was terrible and I'm actually happy we lost to the redskins if it was what caused him getting fired, ravens will probably still make the playoffs and are already out of the running for the #1 seed so i'm glad it happened. |

Or it could be that he knows his assistants will get paid better at arkansas and understands that good coordinators are important. Or it could be that recruiting is easier at arkansas than at wisconsin so he feels the ceiling is higher. Or maybe he is just tired of the cold. Who cares? There are any number of reasons this decision got made and the people trying to pit this as an sec vs big ten thing are creating a story that isn't there. Arkansas is at worst on the same level as wisconsin as a desirable job and with that maybe personal things is what drove him to arkansas, we don't know but it also doesn't really matter. |
| 24 weeks 1 day ago | Its like you don't know how |
Its like you don't know how to read or something. Earlier in the week word came out that the AD was cutting ties with organization that ran big house big heart. A lot of people here tore Dave Brandon saying he was doing something bad. It now comes out that the reason Brandon cut ties is because that organization was a for profit and was taking 80% of the entrance fee for administrative costs which I can say having worked for multiple non-profits is a huge portion and makes me question that organization. This is the band situation 2.0 again. People jump on Brandon for a percieved money grab, turns out there was more to the story that made Brandon's decision reasonable like most of his decision have been. |
| 24 weeks 2 days ago | Yeah but adding Maryland and |
Yeah but adding Maryland and Rutgers doesn't hurt that either. Its not about quality of play in this situation. Beilima thinks he can accomplish more and get more money at arkansas. Having lots of money is good for athletic departments, more than just football, just because Wisconsin isn't willing to shell out enough to keep their coach doesn't mean having more money for schools is a bad or unhelpful thing. Also, arkansas cand and does get better recruits than wisconsin so I don't really disagree with Beilima's decision. |
| 24 weeks 2 days ago | Why exactly did you mention |
Why exactly did you mention MD and Rutgers? What does conference expansion have to do with the fact that it is easier to recruit better players to arkansas because the talent around the state is better? Or the fact that Wisconsin like most of the big ten schools isn't willing to shell out big money for coaches? Wisconsin makes a lot of money from football, how they choose to spend it has nothing to do with expansion. |
| 24 weeks 4 days ago | weren't both of those teams |
weren't both of those teams you know undefeated? There is something to be said for only being able to beat the teams you play, but when you lose to a bad iowa team that sort of thing changes. In addition both boise and utah had already had a few years of success at that point, not just a sympton of an easy schedule and a down year when you go undefeated or with 1 loss for a few years in a row. This NIU team seems more like that Hawai'i team that got stomped by georgia than a boise or a utah, hell even hawai'i had a better history of success to back up their claim to actually being a pretty good team. |
| 24 weeks 4 days ago | I stand by both comments. I |
I stand by both comments. I don't think the big east was a good conference so one win over a mediocre team is not that impressive. However even given that, I still think if you put NIU in the big east over the course of the season they would have lost more than they won. App state beat us, that doesn't mean they would have finished in the top half of the big ten that year. Both statements can clearly co-exist. Its like when the ncaa is doing tourny selection for basketball and a bad team from a bcs conference is listed as a good win for a mid major team and a bad loss for a bcs conference team. Winning week in and week out against even mediocre competition is more difficult than playing two or three mediocre teams and a lot of really bad ones. |
| 24 weeks 4 days ago | I think I read Maryland |
I think I read Maryland would have had like the 4th or 5th best class last year too, marylands problem is randy edsall and the fact that they lost 4 qb's to season ending injury, imagine what michigans season would have looked like if denard got injured before the year started, gardner lasted 4 games, bellomy one and jack kennedy one. Tough to judge the talent level this year since the defense was playing well early before the offense couldn't do anything. |
| 24 weeks 4 days ago | First off the big east is a |
First off the big east is a joke so I don't really care about a win over a co-champion, secondly elite teams don't lose to kentucky. Third of all yes NIU is the worst team picked, when a team does nothing to earn a berth in the championship it should not be there. There is no way NIU plays in a single bcs conference and comes away with a championship, I just don't believe that based off what they have shown they should be in the bcs. Doesn't make other choices good or bad, but NIU is the worst. |
| 24 weeks 4 days ago | Ok cool, lets just put |
Ok cool, lets just put Michigan with that schedule and go to the bcs every year, that schedule is a joke, the loss to iowa is a joke, their best win is over a team that lost to a terrible kentucky game. When deciding who the best teams are in a division with 120 teams you can't look at just record. Do you think w-l is a good stat for pitchers in baseball too? |

Well damn, maybe it will happen at home but there is going to be a game that we cough up a lead and lose a game we should win, hopefully its not an important one. |
| 24 weeks 5 days ago | We are really sloppy and the |
We are really sloppy and the defense is probably going to be average at best this year, its almost like we play a lot of freshman. But seriously we are going to lose at least one game on the road to a team nowhere near us on talent, I predict it will be iowa. |
| 25 weeks 11 hours ago | He also tweeted after that he |
He also tweeted after that he still loves michigan, he's just saying his brother is good and its gonna cost us when we play them, thats the problem with twitter at only 140 characters its tough to get a whole story, but keep sending trashy tweets michigan fans, totally makes us look better than him. |
| 25 weeks 19 hours ago | I mean at this point tuition |
I mean at this point tuition is over 50% of the schools operating budget and is projected to rise. The school doesn't exist without students and thus neither would the athletic program. It makes sense to give partial treatment to alums which is why every school does it. Alums also tend to donate more back to the school itself which is a good thing, sports helps keep alumni connected to the school in more ways than one so it helps to keep them connected. But i'm also a student now so I might be bias. |
| 25 weeks 1 day ago | I think its funny you picked |
I think its funny you picked the oregon auburn game since it had two high scoring teams struggle against mediocare defenses but yeah I'm not sure huddles are nescessary either. |
| 25 weeks 1 day ago | Just read the article, Debbie |
Just read the article, Debbie Yow is just about the worst athletic director to exist (sorry dave brandon haters he doesn't come close) and ran the department straight into the ground. How she still gets jobs is beyond me. Also every coach at md hated her to the point where gary williams when called and asked about working with yow during nc states baskeball coach search told people to not work for her and a report was written recently that based off her reputation there are high school football coaches who would turn down the nc state football job that just opened up. |
| 25 weeks 1 day ago | Our guard rotation is |
Our guard rotation is probably a little thin but we seem to be in pretty good shape and I'm not sure any team in the country has both deep gaurds and post and with the way our centers try to take charges and such i'd prefer to have a deeper post rotation. Also one angry note about the empty sections, a lot of it was student seats and the student entrance was the dumbest set up of all time. When I showed up at 6:30 there was a half hour long line for students to get in and there was only person scanning, it was terrible and as far as I could tell the line was just as long when I got in the door at 7:00, that means students that got there at 7 would miss tip off which is just absurd for a weekday game when students have meetings and work and class to deal with. |

I heard the big ten is providing maryland interest free loans to be paid back later but who knows if that is official |
| 25 weeks 2 days ago | Umm I have had student |
Umm I have had student tickets for the last 4 years and yes the crowd was larger than for a lot of games but the crowd was dead tonight, there was no atmosphere, and I was also comparing it to games at umd growing up as well. So I'm sorry if I have higher standards for our atmosphere than the shitty atmosphere we've had for the last decade. |

Can we count MD as win for the big ten? I feel like the record should be 4-1-1 or something. |
| 25 weeks 2 days ago | How a #3 vs #18 matchup |
How a #3 vs #18 matchup doesn't garner excitment is beyond me, we aren't going to be assembly hall but this was probably the worst big game atmosphere i have been a part of. Hell 2 years ago we were playing a top 5 ohio st team and didn't even sell out. Crisler is for sure dissapointing me this year. Team is awesome though. |
| 25 weeks 2 days ago | Everyone knew this was coming |
Everyone knew this was coming so its not a surprise, if the acc loses this case fsu is most likely gone to the big 12 and the acc falls apart so they have no choice but to sue. At this point i'm hoping the acc falls apart and duke winds up boned, if somehow unc could go down too that would be ideal the all carolina conference is getting dropped by a bunch of schools that never had an equal say and know it. Also if l'ville joins there will be more big east teams than original acc teams, the acc is already dead, they just haven't admitted yet. |
| 25 weeks 3 days ago | They might not be taken back |
They might not be taken back quickly, the staff may not accept a commitment for like a month after a decommitment while they feel out their other options, or something along those lines. |
| 25 weeks 3 days ago | Maybe it didn't count because |
Maybe it didn't count because while it was at osu it was against michigan so technically he could have been there to see us maybe |
| 25 weeks 4 days ago | Well isn't that just a matter |
Well isn't that just a matter of semantics then? If we are running a true west coast offense are we not basically running the same offense as oklahoma just with more huddling? I actually am asking the question because I am not sure. For example, would you charecterize drew brees and the saints as a spread or a west coast offense? The packers pretty much don't have a running game and neither do the patriots what are their offenses categorized as? I just think pretty much every offense has so much variation that more or less none of them fit into just spread or just manball and I think Borges would fall into that. I mean technically all those stupid denard up the middle runs would probably fall under a spread offense so its funny that people are pissed about manball when that isn't qb runs, not that i think a rb up the middle would have had more success. |
| 25 weeks 4 days ago | Its obviously possible and |
Its obviously possible and one of the bigger problems is lumping all the spread attacks into one group, there are tons of different kinds of spreads types predicated on different things. However I would a) argue that what you describe as a 'short passing attempts and running game' is the exact same definition I see said about the west coast offense which is what Borges wants to run and b) point out that in general traditional spread teams try to score quickly by running the hurry up to keep mismatches and tire defenses out. That is part of the strategy of the spread and it can result in putting up 50 points but when you try to do that and go 3 and out your drive took all of about a minute total and puts your defense in a tough spot, even if it is a good defense. Like I said both strategies can work, the spread is a more risk reward strategy, if its working you put up a ton of points but if you are going 3 and out while running a hurry up you are also putting a ton of pressure on your defense and need an elite defense to even have a chance later in the game. Look at the Stanford Oregon game, the Stanford defense played incredible and did a good job but the Stanford offense also took a ton of time off the clock and limited the number of posessions, the more posessions in that game the better chance oregon had. If stanford was also running a spread offense I think they would have lost, thats obviously an assumption but it is much easier to slow a game down than it is to speed it up which is why I think 'manball' allows you to do a better job of controlling the pace of a game. |
| 25 weeks 4 days ago | How hard is it for people to |
How hard is it for people to realize both can be effective. You want to know part of why Hoke probably doesn't like the spread? It puts a ton more pressure on your defense. That doesn't mean he want to score 20 points like someone above posted, what it means is that he doesn't want us to be in a situation like the rich rod years where if your offense doesn't get going early it goes 3 and out so fast you give your opponent 8 possesions in the first quarter, thats just asking to get burned. Going manball as a style is an attempt to control the game, to play it on your terms, give your defense a chance to adjust to the offense at more points than just halftime because every drive doesn't take under 5 minutes whether it scores or not. On the other hand scoring a lot of points is a good thing, and why a lot of teams use the spread. There are pros and cons to both sides but a 'manball' team has won the national championship 3 out of the last 5 years so it clearly can work as well. I don't think anyone would describe alabama as anything but a vanilla offense and yet they have won the national championship 2 out of the last 3 years and have a pretty good shot to make it 3 of 4, I'll take that any day. |
| 25 weeks 4 days ago | I mean the guys might not be |
I mean the guys might not be undersized or weak but that doesn't make them talented. Lewan had a bad game but I didn't see anyone saying he took a step back before this game and the play calling put the weakness of our o-line up against the strength of the osu defense. I'm not willing to get worked up about funk until 2 years when the talented linemen have a year of starting. |

our kickoff coverage has been a little suspect all year, I didn't have a huge problem with it. |
| 25 weeks 4 days ago | So I read your things that |
So I read your things that went wrong not on borges but stopped giving a shit about your analysis after you listed having an ankle tackle happen as anything wrong with Gallon, guy made a diving ankle tackle it happens all the time, there is literally nothing Gallon did wrong. In regards to the 4th and 3 play I remember a few guys hitting denard but maybe you are right on that one. Either way Borges is dumb. |
