|4 hours 46 min ago||Hey Ace, don't know how much||
Hey Ace, don't know how much you plan on replying to comments but this season is a make the tournament and be happy with it sort of ceilieng. Which is generally fine to have and shows how beilein has helped raise the bar of expectations but at what point is worry about the future of the team justified?
We have seen how next years team looks and it isn't super pretty and all we are adding is a backup pg, a moderately rated wing with moderate athletecism and shooting and two (or one depending on prep years) not super athletic big men who are most likely multiple year projects. Meanwhile MSU got all the recruits Beilein originally wanted, Maryland is probably going to bring in another top 10 national class, Indiana looks better, and OSU is a super young but talented team that will have another year. At that point you are asking for a 65 year old beilein to drastically turn it around on the recruiting trail or we are looking at 4-5 straight year of mediocrity. Am I right to be a little panicked there isn't enough time left in Beileins coaching career for him to get the team out of being a middle of the road team again?
|7 hours 35 min ago||Scouts think the guys ranked||
Scouts think the guys ranked above him will be better in college? I mean most d1 players are going to look good in high school so its about projecting beyond that. His handles might be good enough to beat hs players off the dribble but not college. Same goes for athletecism. Couple that with the fact that he isn't a great shooter and you get the ranking.

I'm a little nervous that some of the current guys committed are the under the radar 3 star types that were pushed out of their commitment this year. As long as that happens this summer its fine, but it needs to happen this summer.
It will also be pretty crushing to lose Peoples-Jones. The top teams in the country are top teams a lot of the time because elite talent doesn't leave. For a top 10 guy who grew up in Detroit with a parent that went to Michigan to not come here would just be such a shit situation. I'm also a little worried becaues he seems like a quiet stay under the radar guy and something like sots seems more likely to turn him away than interest him. He should obviously do what makes him happiest and I won't have any issues with what he decides, even if its osu or msu but he should probably be #1 on our boards.

They should just take Nebraska back. For all the shit we give Rutgers Nebraska doesn't add jack to the conference. Football program is probably going to tank with Riley at the helm and no more ability to recruit Texas while in the big ten. They will probably never be better than mediocre in basketball, no recruiting advantage to have that state, they don't bring a large tv market and to top if off its the worst school academically. Just let them go back.

Brian you are an intelligent guy but this post is 100% just your opinion and you come off pretty condescending. How do you know the fact that Harbaugh pulled that didn't impact the way Hamilton saw him at all? You have a close personal converasation with him about it? Because I'm guessing not. It was obviously always a possibliity he might flip but to say 100% that Harbaugh being willing to drop people when he thinks he has better options might have zero impact on someone seems a little over the top. If you don't think Michigan wasn't planning on filling out the class that Swenson wouldn't be in it that is pretty naive of you. Michigan only pushed him out because they thought they could get a better player in this class, it might not have been another OL but someone they liked better and they were worried about a numbers crunch. If this class were to only have finished with 20 people in it Swenson would never have been pushed out and believing otherwise because Michigan cares about the kid and he probably wouldn't have played seems like the height of naivete.

Don't want to start another topic so since this is OL related I keep seeing people mention stuff about Onwenu seemingly ready to flip? Are there any real legs to the rumor? He did this at Stanford too. It's already a pattern. Harbaugh is basically ghosting kids and hoping they get the message. It's childish. Don't accept offers from kids you plan on recruiting over. Non comittable offers exist more or less to show interest without this situation.

I hate when people say stuff like this like there aren't guys rated higher the staff tried to get and didn't. I'm sure our class will be good but it won't be the 30 ish guys the staff want the most it will be like 15 guys the staff had on the top of their boards and a bunch of plan b's and c's which is fine but recruiting services generally get things right. I bet Michigan would love to have greg little over every OL recruit in the class but they won't get him. That doesn't make the recruiting sites wrong about little.

The student section set up in Crisler sucks but a roving student section for big games is a horrendous idea and unfair to season ticket holders. They missed the chance to do anything good during the crisler renovation and not it just sucks. They should have bleachers around the entire court and there should be a steeper wall of students behind one basket, not off to the side with the band behind the basket and over a tunnel. Who the fuck put a tunnel behind the basket? Those always go in corners. So much stupid went into that plan.

Seems like Hill is more than likely gone. Webb might be saying 50/50 but when you drop a guy from almost certain to 50/50 it really means the other side is more likely. That recruiting loss is going to hurt.
In 2017 downer news I'm really nervous about donovan peoples-jones and osu. I only noticed it because of the Haskins stuff and being a nominal MD fan still but he has been tweeting at a ton of osu commits and re-tweeting a lot of osu stuff with pretty much nothing about Michigan. Obviously a long way to go but in the actions speak louder than words side of things it seems like osu is at least a nominal leader.

I didn't say we had any bad losses, I said we are a mediocre team. Slightly above average teams can go off and have a really good game but in general get handled by elite teams (double digit losses to all four of those ranked teams) and beat the teams they should with maybe one or two bad games on the road leading to an annoying defeat. That is this team. But like 6th or 7th seed with sweet sixteen ceileing and more likely a second round loss is a perfectly fine season. I just don't think we are competing for any championships this year.

We also have a loss to uconn you conveniently left out, a team with losses to tulsa and temple and all of our losses have come by double digits. We are a pretty mediocre team this year. Should be good enough for the ncaa tournament but not challenging for any titles.

We need more than two to leave before we get to where we need to. And Weaver is looking around because Harbaugh stopped talking to him. That is a pretty childish way to handle the situation. Recruiting is shady, I get that, but people on here take the high road a lot. You shouldn't offer a kid a scholarship unless you are prepared to say yes when he accepts. And if he says yes and you accept you sure as hell shouldn't revoke that scholarship when someone you lik better comes along with 3 weeks to go before signing day when other opportunities the kid has turned down because they expected to go to michigan are now gone. And it seems like that is the plan for this year. I don't love it.

My advice is to not play the lottery since you have a better chance of flushing your money down the toilet leading to a clog which leads you to discovering you have buried treasure under your house than you do of winning it (obviously /s). Seriously, if WD put the $16 he spent in an ally savings account and accrued interest at 1% it would be 1,0000% times the investment in the lottery. Lol at saying the roi of buying multiple tickets is worth it. Going from a 1 292 million chance to an 8 in 292 million chance does nothing for your expected outcome and costs you an additional $14. why buy more than one? Your EV doesn't change in any meaningful way from 1 to 10 tickets so you are really just throwing away more money. You are incredibly dismissive but some of the most important research is being done to see the impacts these types of hits could have on a developing brain vs a fully formed brain.
Its possible the research will suggest that any tackle football for any person before the age of 16 is a monumental risk regardless of the technology and actuall tackle football will be eliminated as a youth sport. You just don't know because the science doesn't exist yet. So sure you can say hit head hard bad but worth risk, or you can look at the details of the issue and maked informed data driven decisions at every level.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||Lol at the risks are clear.||
Lol at the risks are clear. The science around this stuff is just getting started, partly because the NFL tried to shut down the research and expansion of the risks in the past. The idea of cumulative non-concussive hits is still relatively new science and most people aren't aware of it.
You can still like football but if you think we already know everything there is to know about the impacts of sports and football in particular on traumatic brain injury you are lying to yourself or are woefully misinformed.

Hardaway was a top 100 recruit. The biggest myth about the national championship team was that it was a bunch of unheralded guys sorrounding McGary. Every guy was a top 100 recruit in high school including Burke.
The players on that team and their recruiting ranking on espn out of high school:
Our current starting lineup
Levert: Not in the top 100
Robinson: DIII transfer not even ranked anywhere
Doyle: Not in the top 100
Notice a difference? And yes Levert is a good player now and was a hidden gem and Robinson can shoot lights out. But Robinson is also an absolute liability on defense against anyone with a pulse and so is Doyle. Those guys aren't highly rated because they don't have elite athleticism and that is reflected in how this team plays defense, which is to say not at all. Whats Robinson going to do when Indiana puts Yogi Ferrel on him and he can never get open because Ferrel is so much faster than him?

We have the 28th ranked recruting class in the country with a 4 person class. There are mutliple schools ahead of us with 2 commits and Xavier Simpson is the only top 100 guy. The staff missed on their top targets. Sometimes that works out but its not like Beilein didn't go after other players first and miss. Recruiting is fine, but with msu and Maryland and ohio state and even Indiana recruiting at an even higher level it is going to be difficult to maintain success. Coach came to Michigan because he didn't feel he could recruit good enough players to win a national championship at wvu. He understands that to be elite you have to have elite players not just good coaching. We aren't landing elite players and when we did (Mitch McGary) it was the springboard we needed to get the final four. If jordan Morgan is our starting center we don't make that run that year even with Burke playing at the player of the year level.

This argument is so dismissive. There are limited scholarships and for every qb we have sitting on the bench in the name of competition it means we are thinner at a spot somewhere else on the field.

Next year on the roster for QB will be Speight, O'Korn, Gentry, Peters, Malzone (I'm assuming Morriss transfers). That is 5 guys, some with a ton of talent for 1 spot.
At LB next year we have Mike McCray, Ben Gedeon, Alan Gant, Jared Wangler, Noah Furbush (not counting walk ons but maybe missing people). That is 5 guys for a position that has 2 guys on the field at all times, requires backups to play even if no injuries and some games involves 3 guys. The need is greater at LB, especially after what happened against osu. We managed to win most of our games this year with sad jake rudock who was at best mediocre. I'm glad he played well down the stretch but it featured beating one good defense (penn state) and still only scored 13 against osu. We can have a special year next year with an elite defense and medicore QB, we can't have an elite defense with bad linebackers and none of the QBs on the roster are going to turn this into an offense that can beat good teams on its own.

You know who else gets exploited? students who are physically unable to use gyms but still pay facility fees, liberal arts students who pay higher tuition than their degree costs to cover the higher salaries and lab equipment in STEM fields, students who aren't part of a student organization but still have to pay money every semester to student government, out of state and internation students who are being used to subsidize cuts from the state. Welcome to the world, this isn't an either or discussion and this movie focuses on football, a clear revenue generating sport, football athletes at D1 schools are exploited, there isn't really all that much of a debate about that.

Love J-Mo and he would be the best center on this team but he isn't good enough. There is a reason he rode the bench for most of the final four run and his limitations are the main reason we didn't get past Kentucky in the elite eight the following year despite being hot from outside (they rebounded like 50% of their missed shots). If J-Mo is your center you aren't winning a championship and Michigan has enough money/respect that being in that conversation is the goal.
Its actually a lot like Denard at QB except Denard had more impact. He was amazing but when teams took away the run (like every time we played msu) he wasn't a good enough pure passer to beat them. His ceiling made winning the ultimate goal extremely unlikely.

They are a major research university and serve as the backup to library of congress which is a major win the humanities side of the research consortium, they have some of the top programs in the country in things like criminology and public policy. On the athletics side they have won more big ten titles than any other school since they have joined, bring a top 10-15 basketball program in the country in both mens and womens, a top 5 soccer program, top 5 womens and mens lacrosse programs, the 4th largest media market in the country in terms of baltimore/dc combined, etc.
I've been saying it for a while but in 10 years Maryland is going to be looked at as a better addition than Nebraska.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||I think you took a pretty||
I think you took a pretty pessimistic reading of that article. They mentioned that since they have joined out of state and international applications have gone up 14 and 40 percent and they expect that to continue to increase. They also mentioned the positive impacts joining the research consortium has as it gives access to other prestigious schools (they list northwestern, chicago, and wisconsin) and said that rutgers diddn't expect to see a big payday until 6 years after joining (2021). So joining the big ten has already had a positive impact on the national reach and academics of the school and while no big sports payday has come it wasn't expected to either. That is like being upset when a pharmacutical company in its first year loses money because they are researching a drug but can't sell it yet.
The issues the Rutgers AD had was being a shitty department, not anything to do with the big ten. The NYtimes article makes the insinuation that the move to the big ten created an atmosphere of pressure to succeed that caused those issues but I'm pretty sure they would have acted the same in the AAC. The issue there is the relationship between sports and academics, nothing to do with the big ten. Not like I like Rutgers, its just that the article didn't actually prove the move has been bad for Rutgers at all.

Sure that could have turned into something but he doesn't really scream impact player. Not to mention if the staff felt that strongly about him sticking around I think he would still be in the class, he wasn't going to get a shot at qb and moved on, if they wanted him they probably would have promised a shot at qb and kept him in the fold. We have other needs in this class and I'd prefer to take an actual lb recruit with that spot rather than a guy who could wind up at lb after he doesn't make it as a qb.

I do wish someone would ask why they don't have their unblocked de hit the qb every time. If he comes at the qb every time it forces a handoff every time. Sure it takes the de out of the play without being officially blocked but it means the rest of your defense and primarily your lbs and safety can treat it like a run play every time, take away the option aspect of play.

It isn't happening, the only trump card we had was beating two top 5 teams back to back and even then it would be an iffy argument to get in over a 1 loss team. At this point utah has a shot at not finishing outside the top 25 and osul could drop pretty far with another loss.
It also involves msu losing next, if this week taught as anything is that trusting anyone else to do your work for you is going to end in dissapointment. Beat osu and see what happens, not worth worrying about what other teams do until msu losses. I mean Tebow's stats the year they won a playoff game
46.5% compeletion percentage at 6.4 a pop with 12 tds and 6 ints.He had a QBR of 29.5 that year. Having a great defense doesn't make you a great qb. Hell Trent Dilfer won a super bowl while guiding an offense that didn't score a touchdown for 3 straight games at one point that year. Team wins don't define qb play. They won 5 games that year scoring under 20 points. They also lost a game 7-3.
Denard has alse been a solid rb, but he wouldn't have been a good qb. There are no facts or statistics that can show Tebow having success in the NFL and as much as you claim Josh McDaniels saw in Tebow he got cut from the Patriots since apparently Mcdaniles didn't even think he was good enough to be the backup qb.
Sure some people bust, thats part of sports, but just like recruiting rankings the overall trend points to them being right a vast majority of the time. Not sure how anything I have said could be construed as childish but sure, keep slingling insults as the mature adult in this discussion.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||His recruiting profile, I||
His recruiting profile, I know its old but its was also probably inflated so I figured an increase in speed over the last 3 years is about the same as inflated high school stats, guys pretty rarely get significantly faster during college as they add muscle to handle the game better. Which is another potential problem for Lewis at the next level which is his frame, he would be a super skinny db at the nfl level.
edit to add it is his espn recruiting profile and the 40 time listed is 4.68 which was from a timed forty at army all-american game.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||1 game is not having success||
1 game is not having success in the nfl, thats a multi year thing to achieve. Being the 25th pick isn't high for a guy who held multiple records and is considered by some to be one of the most succesful college players of all time. And you haven't refuted any of the overall points my post made which is to say that college numbers neither gaurantee a high draft nor success in the nfl. These scouts make a lot of money because they tend to be right and can look past just statistics. It takes a different level of athlete to succeed on the nfl level. The fact that lewis is the 8th best cb prospect despite being the most accomplished this year is a reflection of that, I'm not sure why that is a difficult concept to grasp.
Jourdan Lewis could both be an all-american this year and the 8th best pro prospect, both can simaltaneously happen and both be correct.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Jimmy Smith is the ravens #1||
Jimmy Smith is the ravens #1 CB, he is in the top half of the league but not truly elite and was drafted something like 22nd. He is 6'2 and runs a timed 4.47 40. Jourdan Lewis is a generous 5'10 and runs a 4.6. He is a really smart player but when you are going up against 6'4 wr's with 4.4 speed those physical limitations matter a lot less. You see that wr in college maybe once a year and probably not at all, a lot of nfl teams have multiple guys at least 6 ft that run under 4.6s. Its a different level athletically and that is what will hold Lewis back. His place in the nfl is probably as nickel back covering slot guys who run sub 4.4s in the combine, that isn't a 1st rd grade.

There are six more athletic cbs, not necessarily playing better in college. I hate when people try start shit like this. Tim Tebow has some of the best stats of any college qb ever. Denard Robinson was a successful college qb with crazy yardage totals. Hawaii qbs broke ncaa passing records for years. None of those guys were top draft picks or proved anyone wrong for not drafting them. Putting up great numbers in college doesn't mean you will be the best in the nfl, its a different game with a different level of athlete. Burbridge is probably a 3rd or 4th rd wr who will probably be at best a 4th wr for the first couple of years in the league and he and jourdan lewis played to about a stalemate. If you are picking a db in the first round its someone you hope to be able to putt on antonio brown in 3 years. I love lewis but he probably doesn't project to be that guy.

That psu lady is a super homer if she thinks Hackenberg looked good in that maryland game. The MD secondary is terrible and he had an under 50% completion percentage. He just threw the ball up and prayed and md sucked, I watched that game.
Franklin is a lot like Hoke, good recruiter but when you are beating army by 6 at home, lose to northwestern and beat maryland by 1 I wouldn't feel great about the coaching of the team.

Well if Ben gedeon gets hurt we have no lb options with any playing time. There are other roster spots that are way thinner than qb.

We already are tight in this class and might need some creative roster management to get all the recruits we want in. Not sure where the space this recruiting class comes from unless there is massive attrition of the team.

You can't use 7 scholarships on a position that hopefully only sees one guy play a year. Sure its great to have depth but at some point its overloading resources. If you take Taysom Hill it means you don't think much of O'korn or Speight or Gentry or Malzone or Peters or possibly even Shane. The only reason you take him is if all of those guys suck and if they all suck we are screwed anyways because Taysom Hill is guaranteed to get injured.

I'm not as bullish as you guys are about Robinson yet. Shooting isn't just shooting, look at Stauskas in the NBA right now, his 3 point percentage is terrible because the guys guarding him are now more athletic than him. I'm not worried about what Robinson brings to the table against Elon, I'm worried about what happens to him when we play msu or osu or maryland, especially on the defensive side where he is already getting abused, against a player like Jake Layman he may be so bad at defense as to be unplayable even if he is hitting his shots.
The defense worries me but I think the offense gets even better with Irvin back, so that is awesome.

At least 3 final fours and a national championship. That's a pretty solid average. People have really short memories.

How are we ahead of Utah? They beat us head to head. You can play this game with any two individual teams. It's why the eye test matters.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||You play like shit and this||
You play like shit and this is what happens, the eye test matters and Indiana and Minnesota games make us look more like a fraud top 15 team and less like a dark horse top 4 team. It isn't just about winning once you have two losses. It's about winning in a way that makes people think those were flukes.

If you go last 20 years ucla still has a period of 3 straight final fours and a national champiomship, or north Carolina who has routinely embarrassed msu, but yes msu has been good the last 20 years.

He gets like 200-250 yards of offense throws at least 1 pick and the offense still scores under 20 ish points against most defenses with a pulse? I guess with that defense they win more games but I don't think Denard 2010 as a qb on the 2006 team suddenly gets us wins over osu or usc.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||You are right that osu was a||
You are right that osu was a big game, they were also 6-6 that year. I was picking stats from games against good teams, not just rivalry games and 2011 osu wasn't a good team. Rich Rod offenses shredded bad teams and faltered against good ones so comparing yearlong stats doesn't do much for me. I don't really care about Denards stats against bowling green or indiana, I care about how he performed as a qb in games against competitive teams. and comparing that to Henne in games against competitive teams.
Put it another way, Henne never has a game where he only throws for 87 yards. If your goal is to win a championship that can't be an option.

2010 Denard against ranked teams:
ND: 24/40 244 yds 1 td and 28 carries for 258 yards and 2 tds
msu: 17/29 215 yds 1 td 3 int and 21 carries for 86 yards and 2 tds
Iowa: 13/18 96 yds 1 td 1 int with 18 carries for 105 yds (tate also played a lot of qb in this game)
Wisonsin: 16/25 239 yds 2 tds 1 int and 22 carries for 121 yds and 2 tds
Osu: 8/18 87 yds with 18 carries for 105 yds
Miss st: 27/41 254 yds 2 td 1 int with 11 carries for 59 yds
He also had 10 fumbles that year though didn't go through the game by game breakdown
2006 Chad Henne agains ranked teams (super small sample but includes 3 top 10 teams.
ND: 13/22 220 yds 3td 1 int
Osu: 21/35 267 yds 2 td
USC: 26/41 309 yds 2 td 1 int
If I am rolling with the team Brian posted I'm going for the QB who isn't going to put up a 3 int game at any point.

Denard shredded bad ND teams, here are some statlines from his games against good defenses.
The BCS win you mentioned? 9/21 117 yds 2 tds 1 int and 13 carries for 13 yards
against msu that same year? 9/24 123 yds 1td 1 int and 18 carries for 42 yards
I can keep going. Denards td/int ratio the year we won the sugar bowl? 20/15 his best year he went 18/11. He was an incredibly exciting player and seems like a great guy as a person and I wish he was around during a better time in Michigan footbal but to put him at qb over 2006 Chad Henne who completed over 60% of his passes with a td/int ratio of 22/8 that year is just absurd. Denard just wasn't that good at throwing part of being a qb and its the reason the offense got shut down against good teams.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||I love Denard but really? He||
I love Denard but really? He isn't a good qb, makes more sense to include him as a rb. With those wr's having an actual accurate qb who won't turn the ball over much is way more valuable than a dual threat qb who isn't a good enough thrower to win a game where the run gets taken away (ie every big game michigan played with him at qb). You take henne at that spot 100 times out of 100 especially since Mike Hart isn't a big play explosive back that your really want paired with a qb in zone read offense.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Those teams all have||
Those teams all have something else in common. They all have less losses than we do. I don't think anyone can complain about our national perception for as long as we are the top 2 loss team.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||I would also add a team could||
I would also add a team could defend this alignment by not really respecting peppers arm, put two cb's over the 3 wr's with a safety shaded in between able to come off that edge or cover a slant to the inside from one the wr's. Since its at the goal line the cb's will be playing press coverage eliminating a bubble screen and assuming Peppers can't throw a perfect fade route to the far side of the field a the only real routes they can run are slants making a 3 wr bunch a pretty ineffective formation. It would work better with Rudock still under center.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||They would stop it by having||
They would stop it by having someone win a block. This also involves peppers having to bowl over a lb in a hole since you don't have enough guys to block him and while its certainly possible peppers does it you don't know for sure. But this is pretty much what Indiana did with Jordan Howard, they spread us out and then just had Howard run over our lb's into the end zone.

Franklins a shitty enough coach that Maryland paid him a million dollars to not be their coach in waiting anymore because he was failing at the OC. He is a really good recruiter and a really shitty x's and o's coach.
