|4 weeks 6 days ago||My time on the waiting list||
I came to Michigan for grad school in 1986 (Harbaugh's last year at QB!) and graduated in 1988. For the next 10 years, I would split season tickets with 2 different friends who already had them (one was a doctoral student, the other a staff person at UM). After that time, my UM staff "connection" packed up and moved away and gave up his tickets.
So the time came to put my name on the infamous waiting list. It did not cost anything. You just had to sign up....in writing, as I recall, as the internet was a very new thing at the time. There was a priority list (which was communicated to me by a letter in the mail confirming my registration). There were about 12-15 priority categories. At the bottom of the list, as you might expect, was the general public. I think the top was Victors Club members. As an alum, I was automatically about halfway up that list.
If you did the math from my graduation date, I joined the list in 1998...just after Michigan won the NC. No doubt this would lengthen my stay on the list. What happened after that was rather interesting. The following year...nothing. Then, for the next several years I was offered smaller packages...3 games...4 games....etc. with no ability to renew, but I was required to purchase them in order to keep my place on the waiting list.
Finally, about 2004 (I think?), the happiest day ever arrived, when I received a letter in the mail, along with a bonafide season ticket application. Woooohoooo!!!! I made it off the list!!!!! .....just in time to start paying the PSD. I was certain they had strung me along with all those 3- and 4-game carrots, just to rope me into the PSD situation. Whether or not that's the case will forever remain a mystery to me, I suppose. It also worked.
I went through a lot and waited on that damned list a long time. The ONLY thing that will EVER cause me to give up my season tickets is if I am physically unable to attend, or dead.

What a great read. It's nice to see all this in one place, so to speak. I've had people not tied to Michigan in any way ask me why Brandon was fired. I can usually come up with a handful of reasons... but now the whole of it is right here. Thanks!
I'll disagree with one thing, and state an opinion I've long held about the 2007 Appalachian State game. I won't refer to it as "The Horror" because, frankly for me, it wasn't the "worst feeling any Michigan fan has ever had about a game." App State had just come off back-to-back national championships in the division right below ours. They would go on to win a third consecutive title that season. They were a formidable opponent, and the only reason this was such an embarrassment to us was because of the great story it made on SportsCenter until it finally died down. In reality, a better-prepared team with a championship mentality beat us that day. Simple as that. I will, of course, agree with the larger context in which this game was brought up... that Dave Brandon was a complete dumbass for scheduling a re-match.
No, the low point for me was the loss against Toledo the following year. Coaching transition blah-blah-blah new offensive blah-blah. Whatever. This was a bottom dwelling MAC team that would only win 2 more times that year against Miami (NTM, 2-10) and EMU (3-9).

Yeah, unlikely you've read anything of mine. I don't post very often. By the time I have time to, numerous folks have already said it all. I don't have time in my life to get deep into the X's and O's, in-depth analysis, etc. to the point that I'd post a lengthy diary or something like that. I only really posted in this thread because I think it's a little silly to have yet another 'who's your favorite MGoPoster' thread. This is at least the third one since I first signed on. I guess tons of kudos in the comments and tens of thousands of MGoPoints aren't enough to stroke people's egos. But what do I know? It sure seems to be a popular topic. So I don't post much. But I read the blog daily because I'm at least as big a Michigan fan as anyone here, and also an alum.
As for Mr. Forcier... he's a bit of a nutcase for sure, but his performance in the ND game from which my avatar pic was taken was inspiring... not to mention one of the few-and-far-between happy days in the Rich Rod era. So I made it my avatar and never got around to changing it.

Leslie Park had some renovations that went into play last season, entirely on the back 9. Holes 10-13 underwent some pretty major changes, as they re-routed the creek that runs through there. Some nice stone wall additions, a couple bridges here and there, etc. They've shortened #10 (new tee boxes farther forward)... good for me, as that hole is my nemesis. #11 is still a bit unstable after the reno... some areas under repair, a bit messy/muddy after rain. (Too bad... I love this hole.) They also did some stone wall work around the pond on #17. All in all, some nice work with these changes, and overall the course was in pretty darn good shape when I played it last week...especially given the brutal winter we had. I absolutely love the course.
Huron Hills...I've only been playing for 5 years, and there have been no changes during that time. They allow carts now (it used to be a walking-only course, I guess?). And I agree with goblueram... it's kinda a dump, and over-priced (unless you get a deal of some sort).

Ahh, gotcha. $70 is exactly what it cost me last year (through my friend's NW alum assoc deal). I think it's a little pricey, too... but it's a good time, so I'm sure I'll go again one way or another. Thanks for the reply!
|2 years 16 weeks ago||Question||
Hey... how did you get your tix for NW? When I renewed my season tix, there was info that said available away games would be offered on a priorty points basis (like most things), and that those with lower point totals (that'd be me, although I'm not rock bottom or anything) would be offered in May, if available. I never saw anything else about it. Just curious... I went last year using tix a friend and NW alum purchased, and Ryan Field wasn't anywhere close to filled. Was hoping to purchase them on my own through UMAD this year.

Ski Jumping is definitely my favorite, but unfortunately it doesn't get nearly enough TV coverage (at least not on NBC) because the U.S. rarely has a team, let alone any medal contenders. Hmmm... wonder if I can stream Finnish TV somehow...
Also love the various sledding sports...luge, bobsled, skeleton.
A lot of the winter sports are pretty terrifying, but I think the one that makes me hold my breath the most is the aerials portion of freestyle skiing. Those fools are one wrong move from lifelong paralysis or death.

I hope MSU wins. The B10 needs a little perception boost. Lord knows next year only stands to look worse as Rutgers and Maryland (both of whom lost their bowl games) join up.
That said, I'm certainly not going to sit here and actually cheer for them. And I'm not going to boo Stanford. If MSU gets whipped, I will probably laugh hysterically and enjoy bitching about how they embarrassed the conference. Although I won't go all facebook with that shit, since we basically did, too.
As for OSU... the ONLY time I ever hope they win (but again, never actively rooting for them) is if it specifically serves Michigan in some way. To see Urban end his season with two losses would cheer me greatly.

The whole "exposure" thing is only good for the program if we win, or at least lose close in an epic thriller. If we go down there and get our asses handed to us again, the only exposure we will have gained is more along the lines of a laughing stock from a weak conference. This type of game should be between two perennial top-10 teams. Here's hoping we make it back to that point over the next three years, otherwise this game could do more harm than good.

|2 years 42 weeks ago||Polls||
I always find it fun and interesting, once the regular season is over, to go back and look at the pre-season polls and compare them with the final week polls. This year is no different, and maybe it helps (or not?) with the question being posed. Looking at the coaches' poll...
SEC Teams in the Top Ten, Preseason (present ranking in parentheses):
SEC Teams in the Top Ten, Present (preseason ranking in parentheses):
Of note: Not only were both Auburn and Missouri unranked pre-season, but they also weren't even in the "others receiving votes" section. So the championship game will be played by a newbie and a team that was 3-9 last year, both of whom so-called experts thought were irrelevant at the beginning of the year. I don't know if this helps with the OP or not. You could maybe say, "OMG!! There's so much parity in the SEC!!!" Or you could also say that just maybe those vaunted creams of the crop aren't so unbeatable after all. Or maybe it just shows how silly a pre-season poll is. But hey... they got South Carolina exactly right.

Same here. My boss and I had a discussion about whether or not Hoke could actually take over offensive play-calling should Borges get hit by a bus or something. After the "where is that bus and what time does it leave?" hilarity ensued, we agreed that at least based on what we see from week to week, we just have no idea if he could. I would certainly hope so, but I've just never seen any evidence to boost my confidence in that regard.

Yes. I was a victim of the 2011 expansion. I got kicked out of my longtime seats in Section 34, something I was mightily pissed about at the time. Imagine how even more pissed I was when I looked across the stadium from my new seats in section 18, only to see my old seats and hundreds others around them empty!
I'm over it now because in reality my new seats are much better seats. My main irriation was over being split up from the folks around me I was used to stiiting with. And I enjoyed sitting right next to the student section without actually being in it.

So is it DB's goal that the only night games we do in the Big House be epic, ABC/ESPN primetime game-of-the-week type affairs against nationally ranked opponents? I mean, I $ee his logic in that. But absent that opportunity (such as with the crappy 2014 schedule), why not just pick a game, put it on BTN, and have it just be a game that happens to be at night? Surely that would not cause us to lose any revenue.

I've always been a fan of Samsung products. In the living room, I have a 42" Samsung Plasma 720p that I've had for 4 years now. Most would say it's dated at this point, but I still find the picture to be of top-notch quality. I occasionally look at TVs just for kicks, and I haven't seen anything that makes me think I need to upgrade. It's perfect for the room it's in.
By comparison, I bought a smaller (26") Vizio 1080p LED-LCD that I use dually in my bedroom as a computer monitor and TV. It serves its purpose, and I bought cuz it was cheap. Wishing I'd gone with Samsung in that case, too... but it was $100 more. And the Vizio remote sucks.
