Overall, probably the strongest class we've had in a long time. Lewis is awesome, but not quite a prototype NFL corner, Peppers is just uber-talented, ideal size, and will be really productive. I think Kalis puts it all together this year and is drafted.
Oh yeah, forgot about Wormley. He's an early 2nd round pick. Chesson probably goes in the 4th or so.

Why would college athletics collapse? I don't understand this portion of the argument.
There's a tradeoff to be made between giving a salary to revenue athletes versus better facilities for non-revenue athletes. I'm concerned about building really high-end facilities for non-revenue sports from a budgetary standpoint. A building isn't a one-time cost, but rather an upfront cost and a commitment to maintain the building.
Building very high-end facilities that won't generate any revenue is a model that only works in today's world of college athletics. I'm not sure how long that model actually works, however.

If the goal is TV dollars, I'm not sure anyone gets more money. Maybe we'd get something more if Texas came in, but Texas would get less.
If the goal is football competition, you'd be bringing in a few teams to shore up the other half of the conference, but we'd never play them.
By the way, the Big 10 shares its revenue and won't let Texas be in charge. I can't see that ever happening unless they ditch the Longhorn Network. Even then, it's going to be a hard sell for both sides.

Michigan ran about 1.2 plays for every 1 play Northwestern ran. This is probably more dominant than it appears because we forfeited two possessions due to the kickoff return and interception return touchdowns.
It's a nice proxy for control because it removes pace. In the Michigan / Northwestern context, it matters a little less because they both play pretty slowly. Against a team like Indiana that really wants to play quickly, you'll see time of possession and play ratio diverge.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||Time of possession is a proxy||
Time of possession is a proxy stat, but the actual information is easier to find. I'd care more about a ratio of plays than game time. It's a four hour game, standing on the field for 4 more minutes vice standing on the sidelines doesn't matter. Running 30 more plays does matter, however.

The other piece you're not accounting for is if Jake Ruddock really does bring quarterback play up to a "B" level or not. If he's not ready to play in this system, there's a 6 win season coming.

However, some offensive coordinators in college are doing some really cool stuff with run-pass options. I think the real trick would be to figure out somehow which player the quarterback for those teams is going to read on a given play. That would be a coup.

I live in a nice suburb in the East Bay. I have a great post-MBA job and a house that is way too expensive.
I get her point. I feel like money is an issue all the time because I chose to live in one of the two most expensive real estate markets in the country, wanted to live in a great school district, and my wife stays home with the kids. We both drive 6-7 year-old cars, rarely go out to eat, and don't buy nice clothes. It's easy to feel like I'm not doing well financially.
However, I have perspective. I'm middle income in my town, but I could move to Oakland for half the price and make 2-3 times average. I have lived on ham sandwiches post-college because I ran out of cash 25 days into the month. There is a safety net I've built up over time that will make falling into very hard times unlikely.
She doesn't have that perspective yet. She's going to get some quickly or just be an indignant college kid. Either way, this really says nothing about the school, society, or anything else. Too bad it didn't stay on campus for her to take lumps there.

|2 years 6 weeks ago||I can't answer whether or not||
I can't answer whether or not another year improves your chances, but I can say a 650 GMAT isn't going to fly at Ross unless you're doing something pretty cool outside of work. At some point, you will become older for an MBA--probably in your late 20s.
The bottom line is you need to know what you want to get out of your MBA. If you just want to change careers, want a Ross degree, and don't want $150K in student loans then part-time may be a great way to go. If you want two more years of partying, go with full-time. You'll have more or less the same job opportunities either way.
Also, no one has part-time jobs in B-School outside of occasional low-paying "consulting" gigs and TA positions. There simply isn't time. There are 4 semesters at Ross:
1st semester: 60-70 hour weeks trying to get started and attend corporate events
I had a great experience at Ross, but I really wanted to learn a lot and really needed to develop contacts. If you've got something "lined up," try to transition to it now and take a much less costly route to the degree. The minimum cost at Ross is about $70K / year once you factor in cost of living. Reality is people spend absurd amounts of cash going on trips, partying, and living like they're working and have disposable income.

Ross 2013 MBA grad here.
1. The experience is basically the same everywhere. Every school is looking for more or less the same thing.
2. I tiered my applications, applying to Harvard, Ross, Texas (McCombs), and Notre Dame (Mendoza). I had no idea how competitive I actually was, so I tried to focused on what you could call mini-tiers in the better schools. I didn't get into Harvard, got into the others.
3. The single most important question to ask is what are your goals from an MBA. Career switching is a common goal in MBA, so that's fine.
The critical question for you is where do you want to work? Your profile is weak for Ross full-time, especially for 3rd round admissions. If you want to work in the midwest, try Notre Dame. It's a good school with a rising profile, a great on-campus experience, and a great network. They also punch above their class in terms of access to places like New York. Don't go to Foster unless you want to work in the Pacific Northwest.
An MBA can be great or shitty, depending on your goals and where you go. Anywhere below the top tiers will get you fewer employment opportunities and a smaller pay package. Ross is great because you can go more or less anywhere in the country. I'm at a "hot" Silicon Valley company and have friends more or less everywhere typical MBAs want to go. A place like Foster will provide you far fewer opportunities. Places like Boeing and Microsoft (great places to work) may hire there, but you probably won't find better consulting firms, banking, or Silicon Valley. There's nothing wrong with that, you just need to have your eyes open.
Someone mentioned the Ross weekend program. This is a FANTASTIC option that you should strongly consider. You have all the same access to future employers (especially in Ann Arbor), an easier go for admissions, you can keep your income, and you get the SAME DAMN DIPLOMA.

I felt kind of bad because I live in the East Bay and was avoiding the Raiders because their organization is so f-ed up. I guess that's not a problem anymore. I only have to take the BART to Oakland for games unless (until) the Raiders leave town.

I don't buy that either. Of the $100+ million, probably 40% comes from shared TV costs and other things that wouldn't change if they hired me. I'd also discount increased gifts to the athletic department because I'm not sure those really benefit the school.
Keeping the AD profitable is huge for the school's finances, but the marginal return of Harbaugh vs someone like Mullen is probably $1-2m per year, once you factor in the difference in salary.

I don't really think it dims his star that much. Oregon and OSU have really elite athletes and can really run the ball. There aren't many teams that can stop either of them.
Narduzzi's scheme is designed to be very high-risk, leaving DBs to fend for themselves in order to crowd the box. There isn't a team in the Big East that could exploit that against MSU's defense. In 3 seasons of good recruiting, no Big East team could do that to a Narduzzi coached Pitt team either.

The Raiders are the worst franchise in the NFL. Worse than the Browns. Worse than the Bills.
I get the pull of being in the NFL and wanting a Super Bowl. I don't get the idea he'd want to try it in Oakland. A coach with real control in Buffalo or Jacksonville could make something happen. The Raiders are like Michigan the last few years. They need an ownership change and to remove a bunch of top staffers. Especially in the NFL, it's not about the head coach. It's about drafting, organization, and having a top QB. Oakland has nothing going for it except a great location.

Bottom line, guys go the JUCO route because they didn't meet the NCAA's very low bar to qualify for a four year school. It's reasonable to be suspicious that these kids will never be able to meet university level standards.
I just see the argument as flawed because the qualification standards for athletes are already so low that a kid who finishes an associates degree with decent grades can reasonably expect to meet the lower academic expectations.

The only issue here is that schools like Michigan generate enormous revenue off football players--revenue that supports other sports. However, it is only valid if we appropriately help the athletes get somewhere after school too. The connections and support are there, we just need to be sure to use it.
I'm not arguing Michigan doesn't do this, but there are a lot of anecdotal stories about guys not like Todd Howard, who basically get nothing except some level of knee pain from their time as a big-time athlete.

Narduzzi makes a bet that college quarterbacks cannot make good decisions or throw accurately under pressure. He's almost always right. I'm also not confident they can do that against a player like Mariotta.

Michigan has already had two bizarre box scores, Notre Dame and Miami. With Notre Dame, it's trying to figure out how you lose by 31 to a team with under 300 yards of offense, that Michigan outgained, that had no defensive touchdowns. With Miami, it's trying to figure out how the score was that close and the yardage totals so low given the utter level of dominance.
Michigan pounded Miami, but made a bunch of stupid mistakes that created a messy half. End of story.

The offense gets to control when the play starts. It's an advantage teams should use. That doesn't mean sprinting up to the line and snapping with 35 seconds left, but it also doesn't mean huddling for 30 seconds, allowing the defense to pick its best personnel for a situation, and then getting to the and having to snap immediately without surveying the defense.
If nothing else, don't let the defense pick it's best personnel. You can stand at the line for 30 seconds just like you can stand in the huddle.

Adding the number of plays, all else equal, should reduce variance and lead to the better team winning more often. However, all else isn't equal, so some styles of play and other factors may make moving slower more advantageous.
Different from tempo is GETTING OUT OF THE FUCKING HUDDLE! There's no reason to stroll up to the line with 10 seconds left and take whatever the defense gives you. You can stand at the line for 20 seconds without running a play while checking into an advantageous play.

|2 years 30 weeks ago||MSU was somewhere above 2||
MSU was somewhere above 2 deviations above a typical major conference defense last year. A regression to just 1 deviation above, while still excellent, will require a significantly better offense for the overall team to be elite this year.
MSU has an excellent program and may have taken the mantle from Wisconsin as the best "program" in the conference. They are great at talent identification and development in a way that Michigan hasn't been for 25 years. It's the reason Wisconsin has been good for so long and why OSU dominated the conference during Tressel's run.
However, I don't believe in that team as a national contender. They can certainly win the Big 10 and are probably most likely to do so. I just don't see them making a title run. The Big 10 is going to be a muddle this year and I'm guessing the winner has 2 losses in conference.
|2 years 31 weeks ago||Guess what, great football||
Guess what, great football teams retain players. This is Michigan schtick or not, that's why Wisconsin and MSU both have really nice programs. More importantly, it's why Jim Tressel owned the conference for a decade. He kept bringing in 15 player classes that stayed for five years unless they were too damn good to keep off the field and out of the NFL.
Brady Hoke is doing the same thing right now. On paper, this Michigan team is loaded with a 5th year, borderline 5-star QB. If they block anyone, they can no kidding win the conference. Next season, they're the favorites going into the season. Recruiting and retention are the first steps towards excellence.
There are legitimate concerns with the offensive line coaching, but that's basically it. The move to Nussmeier is a decided step in the direction of modern football. His brand of offense is the same one that's torched Big 12 defenses for a decade now.
|2 years 31 weeks ago||Sure they're talking about||

With ND and OSU having issues, we're about 9.5 wins on paper. I think the most likely outcome is 9, but 10 and 11 are coming into play.
|2 years 31 weeks ago||You guys got it right about||
You guys got it right about retention. The best programs, the ones that win titles year after year, retain and develop players. Regardless of your thoughts on Rodriguez's coaching, strategy, or defensive coordinator hiring decisions, he was awful at roster management.
A coach's job is to identify the right players, develop them, and get them to buy into their system. Rodriguez kept running off players, especially when he first arrived.
Hoke and his staff gets these kids to buy in. That's why Michigan goes six deep at receiver, linebacker, corner, defensive tackle, and running back. It's why there are a truckload of highly rated linemen who are sticking around despite all the issues.
If you wanted him fired after last season, fine. They're going to be loaded next season, with a question at quarterback and offensive line coach.
