My assessment is that Daley isn't pounding the pavement in the Midwest. I think just like football some coaches think the grass is always greener outside the MIdwest, and in the case of soccer outside the country.
Someone else mentioned his camps aren't anything special either (vs Burns). I can agree to that based on personal observation.
The level of youth soccer in Michigan has improved greatly in the past 10 years due to the influx of foreign coaches and kids playing competitively year around., some now sadly skipping high school to play Academy. There is no shortage a very good D1 talent.
And just like football, you can't measure field brains, leadership, and passion/heart by 40 times and stats alone. Would like to see UM take a more local approach to recruiting and not just visit top college propsect tournaments looking for 5 stars.

3. Once you pass 20 years of solid marriage and raising good kids, you care little about what others say behind your back, or on message boards.
My wife drives a 2003 BMW 330xi that is VERY fun to speed. err drive. I just want reliable basic, clean transportation and leased a Hyundai for $200/mo. If you don't drive more than 12k mi/year this is a great option. Just turned in my last one. It works out about $29k for 12 years with no car repair bills and always driving a car that is relatively new. Also save money with great gas mileage. If you are looking for a new ride, would definitely check this out.

debate so it is not cut and dried. The NY chapter is calling out the OK chapter (who backs the OU President). I am not offering a legal opinion, or my own, as to what should happen to these kids, just trying to find out information.
My opinion is:
It is up to the offended party as to what is unacceptably offensive. In this case, not a bunch of white people.
If you have the slightest doubt that something is offensive don't post that shit on social media. 10 seconds can ruin your life - fair or not.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Greg Ryan has had pretty good success on the women's side||
Afterall he was the USWNT coach before the whole Hope Solo beching fiasco. The guy is well connected and recruits well.
I have played soccer with Steve Burns who gave his soul for the program. He wont publically bad mouth Brandon but it caught him totally by surprise and you can tell it still hurts him.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||What Brandon did to Burns was inexcusable||
Burns built this club from a club team and had very good success in the years just prior to his unceremonious firing.
It is sad that EMU and MSU can have superior teams with few of the recruiting advantages UM has including a beautiful new stadium. We have the Wolves and HAwks righ in our backyard along with some other nationally ranked u18 teams with elite talent. There is no excuse not to be better.
Chake's lack of real success is a head scratch for sure.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Some legal background from a CNN article||
It's likely that if the university hadn't acted, the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division could have stepped in, said Barbara Arnwine, president and executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 "prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance," according to the Justice Department.
In this case, Arnwine said, the university likely found that fraternity members appear not only to have discriminated in their membership -- and backed that discrimination with the threat of lynching -- but they've also created a hostile environment.
The university, she said, "would've been compelled to do something to sanction and prevent this fraternity from engaging in racial discrimination."
Arnwine said she wasn't personally familiar with the school's code of conduct, but she'd be surprised if the fraternity members' actions weren't in violation of university rules as well.
All of these reasons are grounds to sanction the fraternity and expel specific members who were involved in the singing, she said.
"A very important part of the lexicon of civil rights law is that you cannot create a hostile environment where you make it so people of different races or religions or women feel they can't function at your institution without being subjected to unlawful discrimination," she said.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||After reading the ACLU release||
I would infer that the ACLU does not think the OU President acted out of his realm of responsibilty. They applaud it in fact.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Yes, I meant they will get their due process||
This could be a long case if the students decide to pursue.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Freedom of speech protects you from the Government||
not from an organization you belong to, or work for. I'm sure the ACLU would be all over this if it were illegal. If it violates the students code of conduct, the President is within his rights to expell the students.
I'm sure some lawyers here can elaborate but that is my understanding.

Sammie is definitely a Jewish house. My best man, who is not Jewish, was a Sammie at UVa and that was a great house. The southern angle is a whole different animal, especially when you get to rural areas.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||The big difference today is social media||
There is another OU video going around that shows the Sammie house mom singing the N (not Nebraska) word over and over. She claims it was a misunderstanding and she is not a racist and has friends of color.
Not sure if attitudes have changed much, but they are more out in the open. I found the many houses in the UM Greek system pretty elitist and with more than their share of racism. Just my experience. Hopefully it has improved.

GRIII was lost like most freshman are. The ability to hit a wide open jumper isn't high on my list of evaluating talent.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||good summary||
I really like how things get tangled when these bad decisions are made and the web becomes more tangled. Jimmy is obviously more likeable/humorous than Walter for sure but there are similarities.
Fargo was totally unrealistic on the surface but I immensely enjoyed the same sort of series of bad decisions. (Bob Odenkirk was in the TV series Fargo and played a 180 degree opposite character to Saul, where he was the naive, bumbling cop who always had the wrong intuition).
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Give BB a chance||
If you liked BC's episode yesterday. I mean think if you detested the killings of organized crime and therefore missed the Sopranos and Godfather 2 and 1?
The Star Wars analogy is interesting but Anakin/Vader is a central/main character in both trilogies. Jimmy is just a side character in BB - but has some of the same inner conflicts, so it appears, as Walter, of doing bad things for "the right reasons". For some reason that is very interesting to me. Couple that with good writing, acting and cinematography and it makes for very good TV.
btw good luck to the Wahoos. I am picking either them or Villanova in my B pool to win it all ( A pool obviously has KY going undefeated).
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Good for Kam||
I am rooting hard for the kid. He like most, heck all, of Beilein's kids seem like nice quality individuals that are trying their best. His obviously has good physical tool and a nice stroke.
Don't be surprised if we see a GRIII type improvement as a sophomore. The difference was that GRIII had much better player surrounding him, so his very freshman like plays were concealed to some point.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Yes Hannibal is excellent too||
Would definitely be in my top 5, but not as subtle. I think you really have to be a BB/BCS geek to like some of the foreshadowing/feeling conveyed by the cinematography. Interesting comparisons though.
Other great cinematography series somewhwere on my list: Mad Men, House of Cards, The Wire, Sopranos, and more old school Downton Abbey. I am rewatching the entire DA series and the second time can really appreciate the good cinematography. Like a good book, it can be enjoyable to see different things a second time around with different perspective. Never had the patience to do this when I was younger.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Two questions for everyone||
1) Which would be more interesting a) watching BCS first before BB or, b) watching BB and then BCS? I know we don't know what will happen in BCS but I wished I had seen last night's episode before watching BB.
2) Where do you think BCS will go next? I'm thinking the Matlock Jimmy goes into Slippin Jimmy full mode as he launders the Kettleman's stolen money as he moves from his dump office into a corporate office that on the surface caters to jello slurping seniors. Some relationship with Mrs Kettleman would interest meon different levels.

Best on TV in my opinion. The lighting as you say sets it apart. The use of light and dark on the characters faces as they struggle with being good/bad and the use of color filters is fascinating. The train pulling in scene in the first minute sets the tone with telling camera angles and lighting.

72 Canada Russia 8 game Summit Series. First time NHL (USA had hardly any players in the NHL then) plays players from Russia. All North Americans think the squad full of HOFers will win easily. Russia dominates the first games in Canada to everyone's utter amazement and disgust. Canada rallies with some one goal wins and the final game 8 has the series at 3 -3 -1 with Russia winning the tiebreaker on goal differential. The game was filled with horrific refereeing (see 1972 Olympic basketball game), Alan Eagleson is ready to walk out of the arena because things are so unfair. Canada is down by two goals going into the third period with Russia needing only a tie. Canada dramatically scores two goals to tie it up and then with a little over a minute left Paul Henderson score the greatest goal in Canadian history.

weren't accounting or finance wizzes at first, but like learning a new foreign language, if you go into it with a good attitude and not be afraid to make mistakes you can get "proficient" quickly. If you get an MBA you'll have all the basics covered (assuming you would major in something else).
The hardest challenges some military guys had was the creativity side of business. When one is used to no shades of grey and following orders without question, getting into thinking outside the box environments could be a challenge.
It's real important down the road that you, or anyone for that sake, make sure you have a mentor where you work to help with issues like these, unique office politics, or just someone to confide in when you get into situations that will be totally different than anything you have been trained for.
We all enter the business world with unique talents and weaknesses. Making weaknesses into strengths will serve you well in business and life. Sounds like you have a promising future.
Again best of luck!

but I got two nice offers from HP in Cupertino as a result of my UM MBA. Went with Kraft cause my old man said "people always gotta eat, techs are cyclical". At UM, I also chaired an entrepreneur club activity hosting a certain Mr Steve Jobs - the smartest man I have ever spoken to (dude was like Bobby Fisher thinking 10 moves ahead of everyone else). That was worth my entire year's tuition.
Anyway, I know Stanford and Harvard MBAs are generally brilliant and well connected. I have a few undergrad buddies that went to those programs and they are all pretty much retired now ,after working 80+ hours/week for most of their 30's and 40's, which is something I didn't want to do for family reasons.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Have you spoken with F HR folks?||
If your career goals are to stay with F than I can't imagine why UMD wouldn't be a smart choice. F may even pay for a big chunk of it.
If you want/need a social aspect of college life you may want to go elsewhere. The experience between single/under 30 and the "older" married/commuter student is very different. Both are right for their stage of life.
Nationally UMD won't have the same clout, but if you want to stay in the autos or SE Michigan UMD would be a good return on investment.
btw ... Welcome to this blog!
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Thank you for your service!||

|5 weeks 3 days ago||Lots of real good advice here||
For my background I have both an undergrad degree in Engineering and MBA from UM. The Engineering degree was MUCH harder. My wife has a Wharton MBA. My first job out of B school was brand management at Kraft, which was the most desired marketing job back in the day. I then worked to hire MBAs from all over to join Kraft.
I had only Engineering experience, aced the math part of the GMAT, needed a prep class for the other parts, and had very average grades. I had some entrepreneural experience and played that up on my application which I think they liked. I had no experience in Finance and Accounting (and hate the latter to this date).
The post from JamesBondHerpes below is spot on. Life is tough and you have to call a spade a spade. Marketing at UM was first rate. When I hired marketing MBAs from the midwest, we had the best luck at UM and Northwestern. Every school has their niche which is easy to figure out.
If you aren't doing supply chain management, MSU is not that strong. Love their Package Engineering and Study Abroad programs too. I just sat in on a BBA presentation at Broad as my daughter will be a freshman (at UM) this Fall but looked at MSU honors. The people were nice, everything is much more customer friendly than UM, they are trying to move up in class, but neither of us were sold on the program quality (and I was REALLY hoping to be sold because there are some things about UM now that are not ideal).
A big problem with all Michigan schools is that they are too tied to the auto industry which is pretty primitive compared to other industries. Also lots of state schools have students who haven't "seen the world" much outside their region. This is why they are trying so hard for diversity. Business is global and rate of change is exponentially getting quicker. You have to be able to change and think outside the box to move ahead.
Getting back to you - Don't short change your long term goals for a short term setback. Getting more work experience and bumping up your GMATs even 20 points is worth it. Other have given good advice as to how to show them you are SINCERELY interested in UM in every aspect of your life.
Another good piece of advice given once you are in is to work like hell to get interviews that third term. I may have set a record for interviews that term . I'm talking 5 per week minimum. School was secondary. Flybacks were awesome. At first I really sucked at interviewing or didn't know what they wanted. (Also go to the receptions the night before and just observe at first - nothing worse than a big mouth MBA lol). Slowly I got better and then finally the first offer came. Then my confidence and composure totally changed. Soon I was getting mostly offers with only a few dings. It's sort of like dating? Anyway not getting a dream job going to a top tier school would have been a failure - so don't discount ANY of the interview process and have no ego about trying to get better or asking for help.
Good luck and stay positive!
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Thanks was Rick Mirer||
The former Michigan coach was recruiting Mirer at the quarterback's Indiana home on a Monday in 1988 -- the same night former Wolverines quarterback Jim Harbaugh was making his first NFL start.
What better way for Schembechler to show Mirer that Ann Arbor was the place for him.
"As Bo was sitting in Mirer's living room, Dan Dierdorf, a Michigan man, points out on the air that no Michigan quarterback has thrown an NFL touchdown pass," Jim Harbaugh's father, Jack, recalled.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||+1 for Bo recruiting story||
Does anyone know the full Tommy Maddox (?) recruiting story?
It goes something like Bo sitting in the living room of the Maddox family watching Monday Night Football" on television. Schembechler was there to recruit Tommy, to play quarterback for Michigan. Then Schembechler heard Dan Dierdorf, whom he had once coached, say on TV: No UM QB has ever thrown a TD pass in the NFL and smirks that Jim Harbaugh (assuming a rookie then) is from that great quarterback factory, Michigan. Bo then says to the recruit without missing a beat "and I want you to be the first one to throw an NFL TD pass from UM". He then walks out with the coach and says "I gonna kill that SOB Deirdorf".
I may be mixing up players but I think I have the jist of it...

"heals of Weber"?
Anyway you can ask Greg the best story out of visiting Fayetteville that day we got crushed was John Antonides getting accidently kicked in the nuts ( by future Piston Scott Hastings?).Anyway he suffered a hemotosis of the scrotum meaning his privates swelled up to the size of grapefruits. It was so bad he couldn't fly home with the team. He apparently was very popular with the attending nurses.

This cheating goes on ALL the time in travel sports. It's hard to play the right way and explain the higher value of sports to kids when your team loses to scumbag coaches and parents who promote a win at all costs attitude.

Who didn't love Grand Mamma and those Runnin' Rebels?!
I shared a hotel elevator with Tark at the Final 4 in Seattle in 1989, where he told me he liked UM to win it all. Smart guy.
Also saw Dennis Rodman at a strip club that night. He couldn't have been nicer.
Aside from the 97 Rose Bowl, that was the best road UM experience.

|6 weeks 2 days ago||No question Brady had many of the same characteristics||
including modesty as they were simple, old school Midwest folks (and i mean that as a high compliment). Obviously Brady lacked one very important charcteristic - prolonged excellence on the field. I would also argue that Brady was too nice - Bo and Woody could be incredible SOBs in a "loving way" to make sure they got what they wanted.
|6 weeks 2 days ago||We have not recovered from that day||
And while I have the highest expectations for Jim Harbaugh, there will NEVER be another Bo. Likewise there will never be another Woody. Yes they were great coaches, but what set them apart was undying school loyalty, a fatherly love of their players, and the utmost integrity off the field.
We are just in a different time. Money is the primary factor. Top college football is all about "getting me to the NFL" and the recruiting process has become just insane.
Anyway Bo used to drive me crazy for his conservative play calling but I never thought I would miss him so much.

It's not much different than developing a top flight football team. Build nice facilites, attract top flight personnel, develop of history of success and you will attract the top students.
We already have a class system when it comes to health care and education. The only solution I see is on line classes and community colleges for the first two years for those who can't afford private or out of state tuition. It is common at UM for kids to transfer in after a year or two due to finances or getting their academics in order. When you graduate you get the same UM diploma. I have a ton of respects for kids who do this and see their dream through.
Grad school is where the school name makes the biggest difference. Mortage the house if you are lucky enough to Harvard Business or Yale Law school.
|6 weeks 4 days ago||Public/Private trivia||
last on the topic tonight...Of the nine original colonial schools, seven still remain private and are the core of the Ivy League. Two became public : William and Mary (Viginia) and Rutgers (NJ).
|6 weeks 4 days ago||From a 2009 NY Times article regarding UM.||
…The University of Michigan belongs to an enviable class of nationally prestigious public universities; many of its undergraduates picked it over the Ivy League.
Thirty years ago, the university began going through the convulsions other public universities are now experiencing. Today, it is largely protected from Michigan’s plummeting economy. Only 7 percent of its budget is provided by the state.
The transformation of the University of Michigan’s finances began with Harold T. Shapiro. In the mid-1970s, Mr. Shapiro, then a professor of economics and public policy at the university, studied Michigan’s economy and predicted that the state would lose tax income compared with the rest of the country in coming decades. He was right.
While the state trimmed a third of its support for the university in the 1980s, Mr. Shapiro, as the university’s president, worked to build a more secure budget base. Michigan increased private fund-raising and developed a tuition structure that took advantage of a growing number of out-of-state students, who now pay $36,163 a year in tuition and fees — about the same as Princeton.
James J. Duderstadt was Michigan’s provost during its transformation, and later served as its president. With an out-of-state mix of 35 percent, he acknowledges that Michigan looks less like a state university. “Folks from out of state are attending a private institution,” he says.
It’s likely, actually, that most Princetonians pay less than an out-of-state Michigan student. While Michigan’s aid packages are generous, no public can match the deep coffers of an Ivy League university. Forty-five percent of out-of-state undergraduates at Michigan are affluent enough not to qualify for financial aid, compared with 20 percent of residents.
Still, Mr. Duderstadt says, the university fulfills its public mandate by helping to drive the state’s economy and continuing to educate Michigan’s top students. While lawmakers still grumble about the large number of students from other states, the university, he says, didn’t have alternatives. Earlier this year, state lawmakers studied the idea of taking privatization to the next level, by eliminating annual state funding. The university remains public, for now…
|6 weeks 4 days ago||No covenant that I know of||
Privatiziation was discussed in 2010 in Lansing.
Also in 2004, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy argued in a position paper that making the university private would be good for both U-M and the state.
|6 weeks 4 days ago||UM becoming more like a private school||
The State legislature's $295 Million this year is less than 4.3% of U-M's total expenditures of $6.9 Billion. Expenditures are booming, perhaps out of control, to keep this public university as a world class institution.
Michigan in-state apps have been steady or declining as a reflection of shrinking student populations and as standards are rising (discouraging many from even trying). Meanwhile out of state apps have exploded via the common app.
And yes getting three times per head in tuition and almost double in alumni donations from out state families isn't something to ignore.

|6 weeks 4 days ago||I'll give you the benefit of the doubt||
but the post did come across as judgmental. Anyway,
I ref/coach/play travel soccer as did my high school kids so this hits home. One will go to UM next fall,l and while she is the captain of her HS soccer team, will soon just play for fun. The other wasn't having fun despite being really skilled,and I fully supported his decision to quit, and now happily swims and plays water polo.
Are there MANY over the top parents in every sport? Absolutely (try reffing ANY travel sport where parents don't understand the rules) I think this has little to do with what school they go to.
Could you put travel sports money into a MESP 529 for a much better return on investment? Obviously yes. But most travel sport parents don't sacrifice school for sports. Maybe some vacations though...
As parents you lay down your value expectations (ie no sports unless you complete your school work, stayout of trouble, whatever) and then it is UP TO THEM to develop passion and figure it out. If they aren't having fun - stop. If they love something, support them and offer guidance if wanted. Otherwise just try to enjoy them and the up and down ride. It goes by so damned quickly!
