if you compare its quality to many world class leagues. In Europe practically no one would go watch a university club match, which is different than the college football mania that we have here. No right or wrong just a matter of taste. I personally like both ends of the spectrum, supporting my local teams and also bucking up to see the very best in the world. The exhibition at the Big House had many quality plays that one would simply not see at any MLS game. when the MLS has a Detroit team I will support it. I would rather hit myself with a hammer than support anything associated with the dregs in Columbus.

In the waiver wire. How's that for being positive?
|1 week 2 days ago||You really think you will have trouble getting decent tickets?||
I think Soldier Field will be half, or more, empty. I lived in the northern burbs of Chicago and enjoyed going to Northwestern to see MIchigan football and basketball (and now you can go up to Madison to see hockey) - but this makes no sense to me, other than for about 10,000 alums of the schools that turn out to see this.

Lord knows we have some East Coast alums and more marketing opportunities for that "wow" experience....And who really cares about the season ticket holders anyway?
On a more serious note, Miami and WMU as the other game in this hockey match up. Any guesses on how many fans will attend this match up on Feb 7th?

|2 weeks 1 day ago||14 is too young to go alone, you are a good mom : )||
I'm no prude, but I saw several young teenagers, mainly girls, unaccompanied and asking for trouble. My first thought was what are their parents thinking?
I've been going with my daughter for several years and she is now 17. I do give her space and let her pick the acts... Artic Monkeys won over Eminem : (.
It's really a fun bonding time. We brought her up conservatively but laugh about the pot smoke, the really skimpy outfits (yes I notice them), and the bizzare people watching. She is learning to play electric guitar and even has become a fan of some "oldies" rock from my stone age era such as the Cure and New Order last year.
You are so right on how easy it is to blend in. There are lots of really nice kids there who are very accepting of "old people". Some even told me that " I wished my parent would come".
Maybe you should ask your son if he wants to bring a friend next year, sort of best of both worlds? This is a big time in his life, so be there for him, even if he says he is too old. Even if they act like they don't want you around, they do listen to what you say, and watch how you act . He will also brag to his friends, behind your back of course, that he has the coolest Mom around!
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Saw Ghost BC too : )||
THAT was some act! I have a blast every time I go and try to see all genres of music, but am surprised by which groups draw the main stages and huge crowds. Last year was excellent in both big acts : Killers, Cure, Mumford and Sons, et al. and "small stage acts" such as 21 Pilots and Jake Bugg.
This year some of the big stage acts seemed like they should be on small stages.
Royal Blood and Hozier played in front of 100's and deserved to be seen by 1000's. I didn't complain as I was front center for both.
Eminem was very good but I would have liked to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers come back.
Anyway check out Royal Blood and read about/watch Mike Kerr's guitar playing. It was like watching Hendrix at Monterey - everyone was wondering how does he play three different guitars sounds from one 4 string bass using splitters and different amps. Even Jimmy Page has gone to watch him play.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Any real rockers out there? Royal Blood!!||
Royal Blood was probably the least talked about band and had the best show at Lollapalooza. They had critical acclaim after performances at Glastonbury and BBC/ Jools Holland but are still unknown here. Think White Stripes meets Black Sabbath- a two guy band that blow the lid off. They have some songs on youtube and their debut album is goign to be released later this month.
I also liked Hozier and Artic Monkeys.
It's a great festival but I believe more than half the attendees don't know much about the bands and just want to see whomever they last heard on popular radio.

Congrats to you and good luck in your future. Your Michigan experience socially and academically will hopefully prepare you well!
By the way I am very proud of Charles Woodson,Juwan Howard, and countless other athletes for the work they do with Mott's Childrens Hospital.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||Academics upset?||
Not sure how you draw this conclusion.
My point was that the academic reputation of MIchigan, especially grad schools, is what is sacred to this institution of higher learning.This is what draws the huge donors who want their names associated with surgery units, cancer research wards, business schools, etc.
All sports are subserviant to academics. Football is great entertainment for students, alums, and walmart wolverines, and is a nice recruiting tool for getting undergrads. The cyclical nature of UM sports teams winning won't make or break Michigan's admission rates or the pocket books of its donors.
Academics definitely would prefer UM to be sucessful in all sports including football, but don't lose sleep over it if they don't.
The frustration for many UM alums over 40, and perhaps some of the Regents, is that DB is trying to turn every home game into a Super Bowl, when what makes college football great is that it is not the Super Bowl. This does not diminish the high marks he gets for improving all of the athletic facilites
|4 weeks 4 days ago||The point was big donations are not tied into football||
Also the secondary point was grad schools are where reputations of universities are made.
The year old story helped support that flow of posts. No need to snarky.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||Huge UM donation||
In case you are wondering why Krazy Jims had to move his Blimpy Burgers. It is funny that the story shows a picture of UM football fans, yet Munger made no appropriations for athletics or undergraduate studies. Most big time donors want UM to be like Stanford and the Ivies academically, not like Alabama.
Stanford is actually an interesting role model for UM athletics and academics in many ways. Unfortunately the commercialization of college football, and now basketball, make this very difficult for the universities.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||The reality is||
if guys like Ross, Wilpon, etc don't like UM's President for ANY reason and don't contribute big dollars, then that President is in trouble. Not sure that is the case yet, but from what I have heard Schlissel may need to tone down the perceived Ivy League snobbery to keep people happy. He is a very smart and I'm sure has figured, or will figure, it out. Doesn't mean he or the Regents will be a lap dog to DB.
To suggest that success in UM's football program, compared to academia, is essential to the University's future sucess is nonsense. I'd be surprised to hear if anyone who has graduated from any of UM's grad schools, where UM makes its national reputation, would place winning football championships on such a pedestal.
If one believed this really were the case, Brandon and Hoke should be fired immediately and $aban should be hired.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||Ross loved the B School first and foremost||
Many of his partners are also B school graduates. Interesting fact is that Ross's uncle, Max Fischer is the benefactor whose name adorns OSU's Business School.
If someone had a good academic experience that helped them become very, very successful, it's only natural that when they get older they want to leave a legacy where they spent some of the happiest years of their lives. Michigan and other top institutions are masterful at culling these relationships. These relationship advisors make good dough doing this - and some aren't even alums.
I don't think the RichRod years, and maybe the Hoke years, will jeopardize this process at a great institution such as UM. I would be more worried if our Bus school, Med school, law school, Engin school, etc dropped THEIR performaces and stopped producing the real leaders and best.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||Making a mountain out of a mole hill for Schlissel||
http://www.freep.com/article/20140718/NEWS06/307180095/mark-schlissel-fireworks-michigan-stadium ironically this Freep article seems more balanced.
Those who are offended by the Administration's views on the DB/ football team, should turn your attention to the Regents who voted against the fireworks. Bernstein and other's made some pretty biting comments.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||The concept of UM being much more than Saturday afternoons||
is VERY Duderstatian. In fact he said this. He was a very philosophical leader and did not care much about public opinion, something missing in most leaders today. This allowed him to advance Michigan in race, gender, and sexual orientation equality; modernize the campus; and improve research critical to grad schools.
While he probably preferred the marching band to the football team, under his tenure we did enjoy Rose Bowl and Final four trips.
I've read that he wishes that students were as passionate about social issues as they are about athletics.
Probably realistic to think Schlissel, an academic coming from Brown, has some of the same thoughts.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||Michigan isn't in the national spotlight?||
By the way there are also sports besides Michigan football that are representing the university exceedingly well ; )
Despite the worst 7 year stretch of football in memory, inflation adjusted donations have never been higher to UM than during the past few years. It may change the paltry dollars we sports fans contribute, but the big dollar players have, and will continue to contribute.
Al Glick loves this football team, and will do so through tough times, as all loyal alums do. I don't know Stephen Ross but the last 7 years didn't seem to quell his financial contributions.
What is probably true is that the big dollar donors that are also very passionate about football have Brandon's ear, and some offer "advice". I doubt they are contributing less because they are not satisfied with Hoke's performance.
The big money usually comes from older folks who have perspective, not like many sports bloggers, who live and die vacariously with M football.

|4 weeks 5 days ago||Some perspective||
UM athletic budget $137,000,000.
UM health system budget $3,300,000,000.
It's great that our athletic department operates at a surplus and provides us with entertainment, but our new President has better things to do than have an opinion on fireworks.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||Using the footings demanded by Fielding H Yost?||

|5 weeks 1 day ago||DB has really set a high bar for athletics in all sports||
These facilites are very impressive. I don't know how needed they are, but there appears to be no shortage of big money alums who are happy to foot the bill.
In truth UM had been leap frogged by other universities, most notably OSU, and now it looks like we are back to setting the pace. Once the Edwards Brothers property is bought and those athletic facility improvements are made, we truly will be leaders in facilities across the board.
Hopefully better facilities will mean better coaches and athletes, leading to more M wins : )

|6 weeks 18 hours ago||By 15, the best players are already playing all over the world||
for a club and being put in their club's system where they spend 98% of their training time.
Spain was great because so many of their players played for Barca (talk about a system of play introduced to their youngest).
Obviously Germany overhauled their system after the old system was deemed to not produce results, and look to have done a better job, but it is not that simple. I would argue that Germany's best players personalities fit more into a team concept . They are the Spurs and Brazil are the Heat without Lebron.
The USA is different from Europe and South American countries because it lacks fundamental skills and its squad are not used to playing at high speed/pressure mainly (because the MLS is a secondary league that is slower and less skilled). When more guys play in the big leagues abroad things will dramatically improve regardless of coach or system.
The deep understanding between the starting 6 (off the top of my head) Bayern/ German Nationals was very obvious. Germany look to have taken it to the next level with a system, quality skill (which they always had playing in the BL), and team understanding.
The more players play in the top leagues, and the more they play on the same club teams, the better the team usually does, regardless of the sport.
The USA has recently overhauled their national team program from top to bottom and hopefully it will work.
|6 weeks 20 hours ago||Agree you need both but||
I wouldn't proclaim the Brazilians as being the masters of street soccer and creatvity that they used to be. I found the forwards of Brazil to be very predictable, one footed, and slow to recognize open players - all things you woud not see from "street masters". They also play very direct and rarely had backward digonal passes when then advanced well on hte goal line.
Totally agree that the tactics for Brazil were also abysmal. I think a big part of the problem is that the players all play on different club teams and their strategy was "get the ball to Neymar, and then he dives". The guys who play on Bayern all seemed to be on the same page. Many of the great teams in WC history had players who played on the same club teams.

The US has certainly benefited from having players who are Germans that for different reasons decided to become American citizens and get a chance to play in the World Cup. Did you see them hang 5 on Spain? Don't be a hater. This Dutch team is as good as any team with the exception of Germany.
|7 weeks 3 days ago||Marquez and both Herreras had a bad second half||
Coach Herrera just shut down the counter attacks too early in the match after they scored the first goal. Mexico's defense particularly against set pieces has been awful, so you were playing with fire against the talent the Netherlands has. Chicarito has lost his offensive flair and I think he was the one who should have been near Sneijder who was unmarked at the top of the box.
Midfielder Herrera gave away at least three balls on the counter attack that were unforced errors. Maybe in the heat he didn't realize that the Netherlands changed their midfield formation and were occupying the flanks, which were easy runs in the first half? These errors seemed to sap the energy out of Mexico.
Marquez definitely slowed down in the second half heat and was ripe for the picking. I am a ref and do think it was a PK foul. Not a hard foul like the one missed in the first half, but one nonetheless. Either it it or it isn't. It is not a shade of grey. The whole world knew Robben was going left and MArquez had two other defenders helping him. Why he chose to make a late challenge and put himself in that position is a decision he will regret for the rest of his life. Did Robben embellish it? Yes. But was it a foul? Yes.
I think Germany is the class of the field, with the Netherlands close behind (goalkeeping may be an issue) . Brazil could obviously win it but have to step up their game.

https://www.facebook.com/LooseAussieBloke funny and foul commentary on matches. If I were smarter I'd post some of his calls here. Maybe someone can help...
|7 weeks 3 days ago||Netherlands in a close one, Costa Rica rolls||
Herrera should be off the charts in a highly entertaining match.
|7 weeks 4 days ago||Must be a yellow for Armero||
Ok there it is...
|7 weeks 4 days ago||Do you mean Dempsey?||
Gervinho had a nice one v Columbia also.
|7 weeks 4 days ago||Wow! Just wow!||

Guessing there were no seating licenses...
|7 weeks 4 days ago||Always liked Forlan||
Feel he will do something good soon.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||Lots of hot Belgian women||
So there's that...
|7 weeks 6 days ago||Hazard in||
They have Kompany and Debrune on the bench. Tuesday will be tough.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||Algeria would finish 5th||
If they were in the group of death.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||Korea is bad||
This is the group of life.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||My bad||
Meant Algeria not Russia. Korea will never score so it doesn't matter : (
|7 weeks 6 days ago||Belgium with red card at 0-0 halftime||
Any Korean win would be HUGE for USA playing Russia instead of Belgium. Belgium playing without a couple starters looks like they could be had on counter attacks today.
|8 weeks 18 hours ago||You can "wall off" shield the ball if||
you in playing distance of the ball (about 3 feet) or running directly towards the ball, and can legally play the ball ( a player doing a second consecutive touch on a throw in or corner couldn't legally shield).
The defender shielding plays near the side lines and goal lines are almost always given the benefit of the doubt. The offensive players are given more leeway to grab and try to get to the ball. This causes problems for refs in men's games when a team tries to stall by going by the corner flag. Usually the CR needs to run close to the play and calm things down.
Also players are allowed to stand in front of a keeper on a corner kick but must attempt to go for the ball rather than obstruct the keeper as the main objective.
Impeding the progress of an opponent can be called (indirect free kick) if the player is not within playing distance of the ball or is a legal defender. If a defender outright grabs the attacker to gain advantage it is a direct free kick (this is more common)
Hope this helps.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||I never thought I'd say this but||
Some sort of replay is needed in the WC for incidents in the box. The worst part of the Suarez foul is that he received no red card, and the ensuing play, when Italy was still riled, cost them their WC lives. Suarez probably gets a ban through September IMO.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||Watch espn2 30 for 30 now||
The two Escobars is amazing TV
|8 weeks 1 day ago||CIV is also guilty of||
Blowing a 4 on 2. Not getting back on defense and loose defending in the box.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||PK was right call||
And I don't like Greece..
|8 weeks 1 day ago||Stunning||
Just wow! CIV pissed that away...
|8 weeks 1 day ago||Poor Japanese||
They try so hard, play fair, but just cant physically compete.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||He will be banned||
The question is how many Months.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||Suarez must be banned||
Ugly mark on this tournament.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||I don't like either team||
Suarez is a jerk. Italy plays boring soccer.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||Costa Rica's record||
Is just remarkable and they are playing England tough . 9 points wouldn't surprise me in the toughest group.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Lots of good points, I would add||
1) MLS is a sub par league that relative few watch, that offers no American childhood idols to emulate and no big money for potential stars. If you are a good lefty pitcher, or throw 95 mph you can make $100,000s minimum. If you are the best soccer player in your state you may make $50k/year in the MLS.
2) Travel teams not only are expensive (limiting numbers), they pidgeon hole kids early on into positions and play unimaginative soccer (which is why we have so few good strikers), and require kids to play one sport (theirs, cross training anyone?) early on and more importantly practice 3x /week for 1.5 hours (not enough). Foreign kids who play in parks for 4.5 hours per DAY have much superior skills, learn creativity playing in small spaces (see Canadian pond hockey) without being over coached by coaches who vlaue wins more than skill development.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||He should be on a Southwest ad||
Want to get away?
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Holy crap!||
They can score 4 and beat Brazil out!
|8 weeks 2 days ago||I love Mexicos coach||
He needs more passion though ; )
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Goooooooooooooaaaaaall||
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Mexico got screwed||
I like how they are attacking
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Robben playing as well as anyone||
In the world right now.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||Rum and Coke||
Open bar at a graduation party on a humid evening going down very easily. May not make it to 11:00 before crashing : )
|8 weeks 4 days ago||ot: Hope Solo arrested on domestic violence charge||
Off the field issues continue with Hope and violence. Details seem sketchy. Hope she can get it together, even though I stopped being a fan when she pouted and called out Greg Ryan on the US national team. At least Michigan got a good coach out that mess.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||Note to the world re: Messi||
He has the best left foot on the planet. When you have two guys covering him at the top of the box do NOT allow him to dribble left to shoot left. Same applies to Robben and Bale. Spectacular shot by Messi that the Iranian keeper, who had a tremendous match, had no chance on.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||This Swiss performance is the worst of the WC||
France bringing Giroux in was the spark they needed offensively, but the Swiss defending and goalkeeping was really shocking (insert Swiss Cheese joke). I feel awful for the Swiss coach who they keep showing close ups of... must be a nightmare for him.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||No left foot||
Inexcusable for a national player...
|8 weeks 5 days ago||Lazy forwards||
Can't give up when the defense push up. Who do they think they are? Italy?... Lloris is class.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||I like Belgium but||
Of all the group winners it would be a relatively good draw. It will also be interesting if Brazil don't win their group.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||Wow. Game over||
Swiss keeper had his angle all wrong.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||It's pretty obvious isn't it||
I really think the heat and intensity of the England game had Italy fatigued MENTALLY. They were good the first 20 minutes and then lost interest. Of course Mario is the poster boy for mental break downs. Italy better be ready for Uruguay to try and run them out of the arena.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||USA in Group G would play someone in Group H if they advance||
likely with a tie vs Portugal. Group H looks to be the weakest from what I have seen so far. Russia and Belgium not exactly world beaters. Fatigue seems to be a factor in some of the games due to heat / humidity. If we get a draw or better Sunday, I'd rest many players vs Germany. Germany will probably do the same.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||Is that 10 offsides?||
Credit to CR. Italy look flat and not very smart.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||Who cuts Ruud Van Nilsteroy's hair?||
He looks like Lorne Malvo from Fargo.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||Great goal||
Need replay quicker. Justice for Denied PK.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||CR looking very good||
Italy has to figure out the trap. Announcers wrong twice - Baoltelli's head leaning over the line makes him offside .
|8 weeks 5 days ago||What is the AR doing?||
Bad corner call
|8 weeks 5 days ago||I love the way Gigi Buffon plays||
He is a good sport and just enjoys life and playing with the guys like a kid in a city park.They should win a 2 - 1 type game today but Costa Rica has been really pesky.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Greece was down a man||
So they had an excuse today. But you are right both teams were very limited and will be home soon.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Will Japan ever score?||
This is like girls HS soccer. Limited ability in the final third of the field. ... I hear some of their classy fans stay and clean the stands.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Greeks are the champs at complaining||
Rooting for the poor Japanese who can't win a ball in the air. Plus their best player is named Honda.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||I'm mortgaging the house on Greece to win||
Not really, but trying to get pumped up and waiting for Greece to show up. See another multi goal back and forth game. I am not getting anything done during this WC...
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Okay maybe a little harsh||
but they both have annoying overbites, so there.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Suarez = Sidney Crosby||
Prick who scores big goals.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Mcmanaman is gonna be drunk||
Bye bye England!!!
