|3 days 14 hours ago||You might think more highly of the other UM teams||
but the fab 5 were a lot more important to college basketball and more loved/hated than any other UM team for their brashness and style of basketball.
btw I should have said MOST who didn't care were probably younger - didn't mean to imply all, sorry. Now get off my lawn.
|3 days 15 hours ago||+1000||
I think those who are negative on the importance of the Fab5 are under 25. Sort of like the future players of UM v Texas worrying about Lloyd's treatment of RichRod.
|3 days 15 hours ago||I won't buy Webber's book, but I am curious what he says||
For some reason he has been a total prick in this whole saga. Unless he has some new info he wants to share, I agree with Jalen.
Would love to see Jalen, Jimmy, Ray, and especially Juwan Howard a part of the UM hoops scene.
|3 days 15 hours ago||Well be in the same conferenceby then||

|4 days 12 hours ago||But you don't have to buy a beer to get in...||
I used this "value scenario" since one is being forced to buy a dog and shirt which are obviously overly priced. I normally wouldn't buy a dog or shirt unless it was a good deal. If the dog and shirt was priced at $40 retail, I wouldn't say "wow a $2 ticket!".
I'd rather just get a ticket for $33 on Stubhub, BUT if your gonna give me a really good deal on a dog and shirt, I am willing to buy more things, so hence my logic that this deal for me is worth about $29 for a ticket. Anyway, it's a marketing deal that everyone looking for seats can evaluate with their own utility values. If you love dogs and shirts then it is even a better deal for you.
As you say, winning will change things PDQ. Also next year's home schedule has several big games, so I would expect fewer "deals".
|4 days 13 hours ago||yes, shirt and dog are $26 "retail"||
probably worth more like half that, but still that makes a ticket for $29 for a B1G game at the Big House. I hope some who can't afford seat licenses and $75 tickets, take advantage of this; and those who have season tickets see will only see this as a short term solution to sell out games.
Personally, I think DB should do more things for current season ticket holders who are riding the storm out: Free tix to Slipery Rock, free bottled water, framed picture of Brady, something more as a good will marketing move.

As much as we all like to bitch about the coaching, there is nothing quite like going to a Big House game in the fall, especially with your kid for their first time. The "holy shit " look in their eyes when they enter the stadium, an hearing the band (not piped in crap) is priceless.
I can tell also you many of the players are great guys that we would all be proud of and are still focused on winning a big10 title.
I do wish the Athletic Department would have donated 1000's of extra tickets to Motts rather than all these mindless promotions that devalue season tickets. What's going on on StubHub is plain sad.

In 1992, Kiel suffered a severe head injury in a car accident, which affected his balance. He was subsequently forced to walk with a cane to support himself (as shown in his appearance in the movie Happy Gilmore, where he is seen leaning on a person or a cane).

I have no doubt UM will win by 30+ points and we will learn nothing from this game. Would like to see Funchess heal and not play at all and also sit Gardner mid way through the second quarter. Still shaking my head at playing them when we were down 31 points last week ....

We are playing the absolute worst Div 1 opponent. A good game to take small kids to as the competition will be over by mid second quarter. One of these a year (especially for the first game) is okay at $74 a pop. Two or more... I mean really?
My HS daughter went with her friend to App. State for $28/each doing very little negotiating with scalpers. This week's prices should be lower and plenty of elbow room for all. Aside for cheering for the guys when they come out of the tunnel I have little interest in attending this game. Will watch on TV and flipping channels often.

They may be the best team we play at home! If we don't win, the whole season could really unravel like it did at the end of 2013. I expected one win out of ND, MSU, and OSU and us to finish with 3 losses. After last week, if we lose to Utah, 5 or more losses are likely and that will not be acceptable to the money donors. This will be a critical and " must see" game.

I'm living this discussion right now. It kills me to say as a two time UM graduate, but MSU has impressed me more than UM with their HS recruiting and campus tours. My daughter and MANY of her top scholar friends are faced with UM's reputation vs MSU's practicality.
My daughter is applying both MSU RC/ Honors College and UM. We are upper middle class and white so we will see no $ from UM and have to wait until XMas to find out about early admissions. MSU has some very attractive residential colleges that are actively going after these students reaching out with personal friendly pitches, quick acceptances and scholarship offers.
For grad school I'd put costs way behind getting into the best school you can get into. But for undergrad, especially the first two years, if a student is willing to challenge themselves and work hard, a good education can be achieved at MANY schools.

|2 weeks 6 days ago||I watched most every CFB game on TV||
and don't think you can draw too much from week one except that the SEC is still the best conference, or at least has crazy athletes at all positions. How big10 teams will do against each other 3 weeks from now is a crap shoot for the most part.
NO ONE would have predicted MSU's great run last year after the first game (s). Connor Cook and their entire offense went from being the worst to being the best in the league.
This year, Indiana and Minnesota are underdog teams that I thnk will pull off a big upset or two in conference play.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Play selection also was key||
Nothing too complicated for the entire offense including the O-line. Coach Nuss passed his first test with flying colors. If they can execute similarly against a better opponent, Notre Dame, a 10 win season is suddenly a realistic expectation.

if you compare its quality to many world class leagues. In Europe practically no one would go watch a university club match, which is different than the college football mania that we have here. No right or wrong just a matter of taste. I personally like both ends of the spectrum, supporting my local teams and also bucking up to see the very best in the world. The exhibition at the Big House had many quality plays that one would simply not see at any MLS game. when the MLS has a Detroit team I will support it. I would rather hit myself with a hammer than support anything associated with the dregs in Columbus.

I think Soldier Field will be half, or more, empty. I lived in the northern burbs of Chicago and enjoyed going to Northwestern to see MIchigan football and basketball (and now you can go up to Madison to see hockey) - but this makes no sense to me, other than for about 10,000 alums of the schools that turn out to see this.

|6 weeks 4 days ago||14 is too young to go alone, you are a good mom : )||
I'm no prude, but I saw several young teenagers, mainly girls, unaccompanied and asking for trouble. My first thought was what are their parents thinking?
I've been going with my daughter for several years and she is now 17. I do give her space and let her pick the acts... Artic Monkeys won over Eminem : (.
It's really a fun bonding time. We brought her up conservatively but laugh about the pot smoke, the really skimpy outfits (yes I notice them), and the bizzare people watching. She is learning to play electric guitar and even has become a fan of some "oldies" rock from my stone age era such as the Cure and New Order last year.
You are so right on how easy it is to blend in. There are lots of really nice kids there who are very accepting of "old people". Some even told me that " I wished my parent would come".
Maybe you should ask your son if he wants to bring a friend next year, sort of best of both worlds? This is a big time in his life, so be there for him, even if he says he is too old. Even if they act like they don't want you around, they do listen to what you say, and watch how you act . He will also brag to his friends, behind your back of course, that he has the coolest Mom around!
|6 weeks 5 days ago||Saw Ghost BC too : )||
THAT was some act! I have a blast every time I go and try to see all genres of music, but am surprised by which groups draw the main stages and huge crowds. Last year was excellent in both big acts : Killers, Cure, Mumford and Sons, et al. and "small stage acts" such as 21 Pilots and Jake Bugg.
This year some of the big stage acts seemed like they should be on small stages.
Royal Blood and Hozier played in front of 100's and deserved to be seen by 1000's. I didn't complain as I was front center for both.
Eminem was very good but I would have liked to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers come back.
Anyway check out Royal Blood and read about/watch Mike Kerr's guitar playing. It was like watching Hendrix at Monterey - everyone was wondering how does he play three different guitars sounds from one 4 string bass using splitters and different amps. Even Jimmy Page has gone to watch him play.
|6 weeks 5 days ago||Any real rockers out there? Royal Blood!!||
Royal Blood was probably the least talked about band and had the best show at Lollapalooza. They had critical acclaim after performances at Glastonbury and BBC/ Jools Holland but are still unknown here. Think White Stripes meets Black Sabbath- a two guy band that blow the lid off. They have some songs on youtube and their debut album is goign to be released later this month.
I also liked Hozier and Artic Monkeys.
It's a great festival but I believe more than half the attendees don't know much about the bands and just want to see whomever they last heard on popular radio.

|9 weeks 10 hours ago||Nice post Brodie||
Congrats to you and good luck in your future. Your Michigan experience socially and academically will hopefully prepare you well!
By the way I am very proud of Charles Woodson,Juwan Howard, and countless other athletes for the work they do with Mott's Childrens Hospital.
|9 weeks 11 hours ago||Academics upset?||
Not sure how you draw this conclusion.
My point was that the academic reputation of MIchigan, especially grad schools, is what is sacred to this institution of higher learning.This is what draws the huge donors who want their names associated with surgery units, cancer research wards, business schools, etc.
All sports are subserviant to academics. Football is great entertainment for students, alums, and walmart wolverines, and is a nice recruiting tool for getting undergrads. The cyclical nature of UM sports teams winning won't make or break Michigan's admission rates or the pocket books of its donors.
Academics definitely would prefer UM to be sucessful in all sports including football, but don't lose sleep over it if they don't.
The frustration for many UM alums over 40, and perhaps some of the Regents, is that DB is trying to turn every home game into a Super Bowl, when what makes college football great is that it is not the Super Bowl. This does not diminish the high marks he gets for improving all of the athletic facilites
|9 weeks 11 hours ago||The point was big donations are not tied into football||
Also the secondary point was grad schools are where reputations of universities are made.
The year old story helped support that flow of posts. No need to snarky.
|9 weeks 15 hours ago||Huge UM donation||
In case you are wondering why Krazy Jims had to move his Blimpy Burgers. It is funny that the story shows a picture of UM football fans, yet Munger made no appropriations for athletics or undergraduate studies. Most big time donors want UM to be like Stanford and the Ivies academically, not like Alabama.
Stanford is actually an interesting role model for UM athletics and academics in many ways. Unfortunately the commercialization of college football, and now basketball, make this very difficult for the universities.
|9 weeks 15 hours ago||The reality is||
if guys like Ross, Wilpon, etc don't like UM's President for ANY reason and don't contribute big dollars, then that President is in trouble. Not sure that is the case yet, but from what I have heard Schlissel may need to tone down the perceived Ivy League snobbery to keep people happy. He is a very smart and I'm sure has figured, or will figure, it out. Doesn't mean he or the Regents will be a lap dog to DB.
To suggest that success in UM's football program, compared to academia, is essential to the University's future sucess is nonsense. I'd be surprised to hear if anyone who has graduated from any of UM's grad schools, where UM makes its national reputation, would place winning football championships on such a pedestal.
If one believed this really were the case, Brandon and Hoke should be fired immediately and $aban should be hired.
|9 weeks 1 day ago||Ross loved the B School first and foremost||
Many of his partners are also B school graduates. Interesting fact is that Ross's uncle, Max Fischer is the benefactor whose name adorns OSU's Business School.
If someone had a good academic experience that helped them become very, very successful, it's only natural that when they get older they want to leave a legacy where they spent some of the happiest years of their lives. Michigan and other top institutions are masterful at culling these relationships. These relationship advisors make good dough doing this - and some aren't even alums.
I don't think the RichRod years, and maybe the Hoke years, will jeopardize this process at a great institution such as UM. I would be more worried if our Bus school, Med school, law school, Engin school, etc dropped THEIR performaces and stopped producing the real leaders and best.

http://www.freep.com/article/20140718/NEWS06/307180095/mark-schlissel-fireworks-michigan-stadium ironically this Freep article seems more balanced.
Those who are offended by the Administration's views on the DB/ football team, should turn your attention to the Regents who voted against the fireworks. Bernstein and other's made some pretty biting comments.
|9 weeks 1 day ago||The concept of UM being much more than Saturday afternoons||
is VERY Duderstatian. In fact he said this. He was a very philosophical leader and did not care much about public opinion, something missing in most leaders today. This allowed him to advance Michigan in race, gender, and sexual orientation equality; modernize the campus; and improve research critical to grad schools.
While he probably preferred the marching band to the football team, under his tenure we did enjoy Rose Bowl and Final four trips.
I've read that he wishes that students were as passionate about social issues as they are about athletics.
Probably realistic to think Schlissel, an academic coming from Brown, has some of the same thoughts.
|9 weeks 1 day ago||Michigan isn't in the national spotlight?||
By the way there are also sports besides Michigan football that are representing the university exceedingly well ; )
Despite the worst 7 year stretch of football in memory, inflation adjusted donations have never been higher to UM than during the past few years. It may change the paltry dollars we sports fans contribute, but the big dollar players have, and will continue to contribute.
Al Glick loves this football team, and will do so through tough times, as all loyal alums do. I don't know Stephen Ross but the last 7 years didn't seem to quell his financial contributions.
What is probably true is that the big dollar donors that are also very passionate about football have Brandon's ear, and some offer "advice". I doubt they are contributing less because they are not satisfied with Hoke's performance.
The big money usually comes from older folks who have perspective, not like many sports bloggers, who live and die vacariously with M football.

UM athletic budget $137,000,000.
UM health system budget $3,300,000,000.
It's great that our athletic department operates at a surplus and provides us with entertainment, but our new President has better things to do than have an opinion on fireworks.

|9 weeks 4 days ago||DB has really set a high bar for athletics in all sports||
These facilites are very impressive. I don't know how needed they are, but there appears to be no shortage of big money alums who are happy to foot the bill.
In truth UM had been leap frogged by other universities, most notably OSU, and now it looks like we are back to setting the pace. Once the Edwards Brothers property is bought and those athletic facility improvements are made, we truly will be leaders in facilities across the board.
Hopefully better facilities will mean better coaches and athletes, leading to more M wins : )

|10 weeks 3 days ago||Congrats to Argentina||
|10 weeks 3 days ago||Van Over||
|10 weeks 3 days ago||I picked the wrong week to stop||
|10 weeks 3 days ago||Card?||
|10 weeks 3 days ago||Need more hot chicks shots||
|10 weeks 3 days ago||This game needs a goal||
Otherwise both sides are too cautious.
|10 weeks 3 days ago||The state of U8 soccer is all over the place.||
I wouldn't judge the US system by that or even u12 clubs. The quality of coaching here is improving at all ages, and the Academy system tends to mimic what they do in Europe.
Unfortunately High School soccer will now take a back seat like it does in basketball, hockey and other travel sports.
|10 weeks 3 days ago||Dutch to win||
Di Maria's effectiveness/health could be the real difference. Machirano should get exposed.
Van Persie wakes up....
Netherlands 4 , Argentina 2
|10 weeks 3 days ago||By 15, the best players are already playing all over the world||
for a club and being put in their club's system where they spend 98% of their training time.
Spain was great because so many of their players played for Barca (talk about a system of play introduced to their youngest).
Obviously Germany overhauled their system after the old system was deemed to not produce results, and look to have done a better job, but it is not that simple. I would argue that Germany's best players personalities fit more into a team concept . They are the Spurs and Brazil are the Heat without Lebron.
The USA is different from Europe and South American countries because it lacks fundamental skills and its squad are not used to playing at high speed/pressure mainly (because the MLS is a secondary league that is slower and less skilled). When more guys play in the big leagues abroad things will dramatically improve regardless of coach or system.
The deep understanding between the starting 6 (off the top of my head) Bayern/ German Nationals was very obvious. Germany look to have taken it to the next level with a system, quality skill (which they always had playing in the BL), and team understanding.
The more players play in the top leagues, and the more they play on the same club teams, the better the team usually does, regardless of the sport.
The USA has recently overhauled their national team program from top to bottom and hopefully it will work.
|10 weeks 3 days ago||Agree you need both but||
I wouldn't proclaim the Brazilians as being the masters of street soccer and creatvity that they used to be. I found the forwards of Brazil to be very predictable, one footed, and slow to recognize open players - all things you woud not see from "street masters". They also play very direct and rarely had backward digonal passes when then advanced well on hte goal line.
Totally agree that the tactics for Brazil were also abysmal. I think a big part of the problem is that the players all play on different club teams and their strategy was "get the ball to Neymar, and then he dives". The guys who play on Bayern all seemed to be on the same page. Many of the great teams in WC history had players who played on the same club teams.
|10 weeks 3 days ago||Well at least Argentina won't win it all||
Oh wait they still have a chance ; )
Actually I'm rooting for a Brazil-Argentina consolation match.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Punny recap||
Everyone thought it would be a lot Klose than this as Germany easily Kroosed to the finals.
Brazil led like Lahms to slaughter, sank to a new Loew.
It must have Benard for Brazil to play under so much pressure, and then have no Silva lining in the Hummelating loss. The fans
could barely watch any Neymar and Dante knew what to do now. It was so quiet you Khedira pin drop!
After 20 minutes Germany knew they Goetze the game in the bag,
The fans now hope Scolari will be Mertersacked after this ugly game. If it were a film, Schurle it wouldn't win an Oscar.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||England had NEVER lost on home soil to any non Brit team||
before this match. This was the beginning of total football and forced England to rethink and reshape how they approached the game of soccer. Brazil had their similar historic lesson today. I believe they would have been crushed even with Neymar and Silva.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Google Hungary 6 England 3 at Wembley||
Only national humiliation of a soccer power at home that comes close.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Touchdown Germany!||
Nice defending Luiz you douche!
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Argentina too reliant on Messi||
Like Brazil and Neymar. Take the Clockwork Orange tomorrow.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||McManaman is hilarious||
Amateur hour ... Playing with concrete boots on .... He looks happy to be on the field
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Give a dive card!||
Bad for the game.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||What is going on?||
I can't imagine how pissed fans will be
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Neuer is the best||
And Brazil is clueless without Neymar.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Don't think Brazil will get 5 SOG||
Let alone 5 goals. Geez another lame drive.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Fred is dead||
That's what I said.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Anyone remember UM Virginia in 1989?||
Great 8 matchup? Reminds me of this blowout.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Spacing is awful||
It is like they never played together before.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||I hate Luiz and Hulk||
Stfu and play for pride man.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Mercy Rule?||
Never seen anything like this. My daughter's high school team plays better defense.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Over / under on this game?||
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Yooooouuuu Suck!!!||
|10 weeks 4 days ago||One footed||
And dribbles too much.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Germany is clinical||
Playing as a team. Their team defense is superb! Goooooooaaaaallll!
|10 weeks 4 days ago||Good ref so far||
|11 weeks 1 day ago||Don't spray foam if you aren't going to enforce it.||
Brazilians moved after ball was kicked and moved, but they all were 8 to 9 yards away at start.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||Glad they have suspects and everyone is safe...||
This has been a tough week for me with a friend's house burning down in Dexter and the horrific death of a fellow soccer referee in Livonia. It puts things in perspective and unfortunately I realize there are just some real awful people in this world. So without jokes, I am glad the Spartys and their stadium is safe and I hope this couple if guilty get the maximum punishment the law allows.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Bessler slow again||
Congrats to Belgium
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Fuuuuuuucccckkkk!||
Just shoot me
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Jones is a HUGE liability||
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Belgium own goal for the win||
I'm calling it
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Yes||
|11 weeks 4 days ago||I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue||
|11 weeks 4 days ago||No more Zusi||
Our viewing crowd went nuts
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Yedlin is the most effective field player||
Not sure what that says...
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Jones looks gassed||
Beckerman or someone else at 60 min?
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Our midfield has to do something||
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Bradley may be struggling||
But he is our second best field player
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Yes what about Beckerman?||
Zusi needs to sit.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||A little midfield possession||
And voila! A scoring chance.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Cameron is sad||
We have no one better in the whole country?!
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Defense needs to chill||
Way to jittery
|11 weeks 4 days ago||We look shakey||
I hate the way this team starts.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||No words||
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Some more cards would be nice too||
I like the Swiss keeper if it goes to PKs
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Which is taller?||
Shaqiri the only Swiss offensive player or the corner flag?
|11 weeks 4 days ago||And what was the keeper doing on that play||
He had 10 seconds to go 30 yards and get the ball. Neuer would have gotten dribbled down the field and scored. Howard too : )
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Some awful finishes||
That last Swiss clear breakaway was poor for a u12 rec league!
|11 weeks 5 days ago||But the Yankees are playing||
so in ESPN's mind it doesn't matter.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Yeah bitch about Muller...||
He and Neuer were the best players on the field. But his fake fall on the free kick had me in stitches. There has to be a funny video of that somewhere....
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Bob Ufer is the main reason I went to UM||
My parents thought it was for the academics. Still miss his golden unbiased voice.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Good for Algeria||
They deserve some happiness.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Muller making great plays||
Ozil still sucks.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Both keepers have been excellent||
This may go all the way PK s.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Ozil needs to be pulled||
Klose needs to go in.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Germany played very slowly||
Will get their butts kicked at halftime. Algeria has played very well counter attacking but have nothing to show for it. Expect to see Klose in and the Germans to get it in high gear.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||The Germans can't see them||
As their green uniforms blend into the grass.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Best keeper in the world?||
|11 weeks 5 days ago||yes but if France wins||
The Bosnian team and the Croatian team get to play together.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Ramadan fasting||
Their appears to be quite a bit of discussion as to what the Algerian coach told his Muslim players regarding drinking water today. It was first reported that he said they should drink water but it was their final choice. Then that story was changed and "no advice was given".
For Germany,Ozil, has already said he will take water today.
I can't imagine those who don't take water won't suffer greatly in reduced efficiency and increased risk of severe cramping.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Nice own goal||
Nigeria just lost all focus in the end.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Well deserved by Pogba||
Some shaky defense by the Nigerians for the last 15 minutes.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Holy crap!||
Nigeria better wake up.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||It was classic reckless and dangerous||
Refs need the balls to call the game by the book. If they did there wouldn't be so much diving either ( give yellows for divers).
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Geiger has done a good job so far||
But I would have given a red.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Yes, you are correct re citizenship||
It's funny, when Julian Green's who brother had to opposite experience was born In Germany and went to school in the US, would tease Julian about his English, Julian would reply," I am an American citizen (born in US) and you are a German."
I personally don't care but think it is cool that many Algerians, and other country's national players, are playing for their country of birth, and now have to choice to do so.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||"Multinational" teams||
The US has certainly benefited from having players who are Germans that for different reasons decided to become American citizens and get a chance to play in the World Cup. Many countries benefit from these transplants including our next opponent Belgium who enjoy players from the Congo. One of the countries "robbed" of many stars, including Zidane, is Algeria - so I am always rooting for them.
An interesting article on Algeria and the new FIFA transfer rules is linked above.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Sorry missed it||
It came to my attention in a Freep article touting MSU's success with no mention of Michigan's standing.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Can't wait to see Germany and France put on exhibitions tomorrow||
Don't think there will be too many upsets in this round of play.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||We are all loyal subjects of Zoltan||
All hail the space emperor and his new empress!
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Agree, I would put France up there||
They have some serious speed and skill even without Ribery and not many are talking about them, so there is no pressure.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Colombia obviously has done well BUT||
their wins were against boring Greece (who I think Costa Rica will beat), Japan (Awful), Ivory Coast (who looked lifeless all tournament) and a Uruguay team without Suarez. We'll see how it goes v Brazil, who I said have to step up their game to beat Colombia.
