The scene where Debra Winger is dying of cancer and telling her kids to be nice to each other after she is gone, produced a river of sobs, against my will. Fibonacci started the Renaissance in the Western World by introducing Arabic numerals and reviving Hindu- Indian Algebra. Math and the logic process associated with it is important to every great society.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently released a report detailing the average fatalities for a long list of popular models. The cars were rated based on "number of fatalities per million registered years." That sounds a bit confusing, but essentially it just means that the length of time a vehicle has been on the road is taken into consideration in order to get an accurate average.
Some of the worst offenders were the Nissan 350Z and Titan, the Chevrolet Cobalt and Aveo and the Kia Spectra – all of which had 100 or more fatalities per million registered years. That's in stark contrast to the cars at the top of the list, all of which average "0" fatalities – these cars have either never had a fatality or the number is so small as to be statistically insignificant.
Models at the top of the list include the Toyota Sienna, Ford Edge, Nissan Armada, Land Rover LR3, Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class.

US players are mainly in the substandard MLS. Starting from a youth system that doesn't promote creativity, and rigid systems of play by overpaid coaches who place winning over individual development - American kids have no chnace to be world class unless they leave the country by their early teens.

like Messi did vs the US yesterday. Iceland is remarkable since the country has only 330,000 people! Hungary revolutionized soccer in the 1950's with the Magical Magyars who invented total football. The last 30+ years have been pitifully bad winning absolutely nothing. Sort of the Cleveland story soccer. Ironic because Cleveland has the major concentration of Hungarians in the US.
And yes Kiraly's pants and general look make him appear as if he was dragged out of a Sunday O40 beer league.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||JK often has me scratching my head , but...||
one can't overlook the obvious lack of world class talent the US has produced under every USMNT coach.
That said we have no playing style/system.Yesterday's match was disappointing not because we lost to a much better team, but I had no idea what the US were trying to do and I do blame coaching for that. I don't understand why so many players play out of position but I am not at practices and give JK the benefit of the doubt.
The lack of touch and soccer IQ is also disturbing. The only short term answer is to have our best 14 year olds go play in European Academies and learn to play the game correctly against the top competition.
When US soccer produces its first Tiger Woods, I believe a chain of positive events will occer as well. Please don't think Donovan or Dempsey is that guy. And it has to be a goal scorer not a goal keeper.

|5 weeks 3 days ago||MESP stuff from old UM grad with current UM student||
Being a freshman now at UM in state costs $27,500 when all is said and done if you live in a dorm. More Michigan kids are doing community colege for two years and transfering in to UM. Also seeing more kids taking a year off right after high school to earn money, see the world, or grow up.
Many current UM students are also taking summer basic degree requirement classes at Washtenaw CC. Many are on line so you can do it from home. Big $ savings.
Anyway get an MESP even if your kid is a newborn! It is good for in state and out of state schools.
Learn the time value of money and compunding tax free investment... and don't gamble with this investment - a GIC (guaranteed income) investment pays 1.6% currently for MESP. It is always between 1 and 3 % guaranteed. That's better than a CD.
Anyone can contribte to your kid's (it's not your money when the become of legal age) MESP. I believe up to $13,000/year per person tax free. It is very easy to do.
Parents can contribute $4,000 /year to tuition outside the MESP and currently get great tax advantages on that $4,000, so ideally you have $23,500 saved per year in an MESP if you want to pay for UM.
If you are out of state, God help you. I love UM but $200k for undergrad is insane.
The top tier colleges that make financial sense out state are surprisingly some private universities with big price tags (that nobody pays). FAFSA will soon become part of your vocabulary.
Good luck to all you new parents and students. The game to get in and pay for school is much tougher now and it is a real shame.

|5 weeks 4 days ago||New Rule on Red||
Basically ANY extra curricular touch to the face is a straight red now. I like the rule but it will take the players a few games to adjust.
Wood is the story of the USA run for me. We all know Dempsey is a class talent but now Wood also has really established himself as a threat in high level matches. I hope I'm wrong but our other strikers are very average and Wood's loss severely impact our chances.
Brooks also has impressed me raising his level of play providing stability in an area that has been a weakness. Very solid.
Our midfield has to play better next game. Too many turnovers by Bradley. Bedoya looks like a deer in the headlights when he crosses midfield.
Still not sold on Klinsmann. Waiting too long to sub players nearly cost us the game. Quite frankly we were very lucky Ecuador didn't score more goals in the last 15 minutes against an exhausted 10 man line up.
Still a wonderful result. The US will have to win now moreso on emotion, high energy and crowd support and hope for some counter attack goal scoring opportunities.
It's a fun ride!

Betsa as our 1A pitcher next year (assuming she improves even a little) doesn't worry me one bit. Yes, I'd feel better with a better 1B pitcher, but how likely is it that we will get someone better that Betsa.
Someone more knowledgable can rank the top college pitchers, but I'm guessing we ran into two or three of the best in the past week. Where would Betsa fit on that list?
I agree that catching is a concern, especially with shaky umpiring and the "poor" framing of pitches by a lefty.
I think our speed could be improved. Losing the two Sierras will obvioulsy hurt our power game, but slapping the ball in the infield and forcing the defense to play quickly seems to work well for many teams that reach the CWS.

My fandom of CFB has indeed waned since I know more about the injuries, how the athletes are basically used as (sometimes disposable) marketing tools for the university, and how football players can not take the same classes as regular students since playng D1 CFB is like having a job.
Back to your question, if my high school son really wanted to play football I wouldn't say absolutely no, but would heavily discourage it for many reasons, mainly spinal injuries and concussions. A couple other sports would fall into this group too. I was very lucky with my high school soccer daughter that she escaped without any serious injuries, and now plays for fun at UM. He swims and plays water polo whose athletes have my full admiration for toughness and discipline.
I root hard for the UM football team because I happen know some of the players, who give it their all by choice, but I wish everyone could know how much these guys sacrifice for the hope of going to the NFL. It is a physical and mental sacrifice most would not want for our kids if they have other options, especially at a great school like UM.
I also like watching UM softball,gymnastics, or swimming amongst other sports just as much as football.

Look at the non revenue sports and the competition they play all over the US, and it's not hard to see that this is not sustainable, if the TV contracts become less lucrative.
|16 weeks 1 day ago||Performance usually follows upgrades||
The timeline is 1) get good coach 2) fix up facilities 3) attract top recruits 4) win more. OSU went on a roll a few years after they did all their facility upgrades.
DB also foolishly fired many non revenue sport's coaches and that didn't help "his record".
|16 weeks 1 day ago||While I'd love to see women's hockey and men's water polo added||
The flip side of this is the skyrocking costs associated with ALL the non revenue sports. They lose millions of dollars EACH and the money has to come from somewhere.
Perhaps this just accelerates the eventual speration of the top power 5 universities to form their own super conference and the rest of the universities that just can't afford to compete.
I've read about ESPN's poor financials and when they stop pumping millions into college sports it could be a real bursting bubble.

To me world class is someone who is a stars in the EPL, German, Spanish , and Italian top leagues. Dempsey had a short run of brilliance in the EPL when surrounded by capable teammates and a good coach. Howard was definitely a top keeper in the EPL and masked plenty of defensive deficiencies on the USMNT. To me these players are light years ahead of Donovan, Bradley(who I think could be a very good player), or any other USMNT player. In their prime Dempsey and Howard could play on any squad and look they belong.
You can't be a top10 national team with only two players of this caliber. Howard is old but still damned good. Buffon is still world class (and enjoys a heck of back line).
Are these guys Iniesta, Messi, et.al.? Of course not. I would call these guys world class elite.
With the number of kids playing soccer, the facilities and money we throw at youth development, etc. and producing practically no world class (let alone elite) players, one has to wonder if we have it all wrong.
|17 weeks 5 hours ago||Really impressed with his play recently||
He and Connor impress me as guys who can contribute right away in the NHL. My loathing of OSU carries over to the Blue Jackets though. May Larkin and Luke G. skate by him on the way to scoring goals for the Wings.
|17 weeks 9 hours ago||Lack of talent||
I blame the whole US developmental system as well as Klinsmann.
Dempsey and a few keepers are the only world class talent we have. Kids grow up learning the game with too much structure and quite frankly not enough time playing the game with out screaming parents and youth coaches who are pressured to win, instead of developing technical skills. The top youth clubs practice about four hours/ week plus some weekend games where quite honestly the kids don't get enough touches and are criticized often for taking "chances". We really see it in a lack of quality strikers. Defenders don't practice against world class talent and consequently look like deer in headlights when they finally play against top talent.
Maybe soccer should look at USA hockey as one example of how we can raise our collective talent?
Perhaps whent he MLS raises it's collective talent that will also help.

The atmosphere was great, the field was beautiful, and the quality of soccer was much better than MLS. Many of the stars warmed up but didn't play much or at all. Tickets will go fast due to the insane following of both clubs. I sat high in the endzone underneath the scoreboard and really liked the seats since the view was good and I could see the other scorebaord easily which had a live stream.

This is your daughter's decision. Also it's not rocket science on what is needed to get into the school she wants.
You can get into ANY school with AP or IB or a mixture like my kids have done. Both have merits and flaws. My personal opinion is going the whole 10 yards to get an IB diploma vs taking many IB classes is not worth the extra effort provided you use that time to develop other parts of your life resume. That said IB classes are great.
College admissions folks of TOP tier schools look to see that your child is taking the hardest curriculum offered at their school. You also know what ACT/Sat scores you need to get in.
A good GPA in a tough curriculum and good test scores JUST GETS YOU PAST THE FIRST ROUNDS. They want to know what your kid will add to the quality of campus life and what other activities/achievements show sincere interest for the school and program.
A girl who is interested in STEM needs to show STEM passion. Does she do robotics, math competitions, coding classes (UM's WISE program is someting to check out)? Has she gone to an engineering/science camp preferably at the school she wants to get into? I go back to robotics because girls in these fields are golden. Make sure you visit your schools of choice for a campus tour sophomore year, have your daughter get a counselors name, stay in contact -show you are really interested!
If your kid has a special talent such as sports, contact the school's coach or person where your daughter's talent lies. If they want your daughter they will often give good advice as to what successful applicants do to get in - or will put in a good word when she applies.
I have tons more to say. Some is not PC. But good luck to her.
|17 weeks 5 days ago||Saw him first in 1974 at the Olympia||
Years ago, I only heard of him from my dad and his Euro immigrant friends. He and Beckenbauer were the legends, no Gods, of European football. I saved my lawn mowing money and saw the 1974 World Cup finals on close circuit TV at the smoke filled Olympia.
The West German and Orange Army fans were singing for about an hour before the transmission started. It was electric. The Dutch controlled the opening minutes with total football and the West Germans never touched the ball before surrendering a PK goal. At the center of their team was this guy Cryuff who played at a different level much like Gretzky or Jordan. He did it all. Just his dribbling and passing alone were enough to make him the best player. But he also like Gretzky could see three moves ahead, was really fast, and was an excellent shooter. Germany remarkably came back to win 2-1, but Cryuff was the guy who made an impression on me playing a game at a different level. It helped me develop a passion for the beautiful game.

Seems like UM and others are taking most of Ohio's good recruits. OSU was a joy to watch this year as they often played with no heart or brains. Their two 2016 recruits wont offer immediate help for next year. Based on the big recruiting and winning success they had up until recently I am surprised how average Thad and Co. have become.
I agree that is a down year for Michigan talent. Best players are playing out of state and the general high school population playing basketball is decreasing in basketball and football.

From one and dones, to kids pretendng to be students, to coaches making $5 million and players nothing, to kids being punished if coaches leave/are fired, or prior classes commit violations... this is a relatively small issue imho.
If these are the rules, then learn how to benefit from them. Harbaugh!
|18 weeks 4 days ago||Last play of USC/ Providence game is unreal||
Providence down 1 with 3 seconds to go, ball inbounds under their own offensive basket. USC doesn't guard a Providence guy who literally makes a wide open lay up for the win.
I've seen too many bonehead plays and coaching moves in this first round.

Doyle has done nothing to take minutes over Wagner. Donnal isn't much better. Wagner's upside is much higher, he can actually defend in the post and get rebounds, and brings energy that is sorely lacking on this team. It's obvious!
and stop calling me Shirley! (this board is slow tonight).

Barca has the Catalan phrase "Mes que un club" in giant letters (more than a club). It's pretty awesome to see and not tacky like the halo that was temporarily on the Big House. If you are a soccer fan, seeing Camp Nou is special treat, complete with a big museum adjacent to the stadium.

After watching the debates, I think the whole world has gone mad. Who does this writer think Illinois could possibly get? Nick Saban? I'm surprised Smith took it. Being a good coach with NFL ties and a minority will bring in better recruits. BIG10 coaching continues to improve and raise the bar.

|20 weeks 4 days ago||Stanford has totally changed things||
I can't believe this is real but have heard nothing to the contrary. Anyone with current Stanford experience here?
All I know is that UM this year is really about $27k/year bottom line in state undergrad and there aren't too many scholarships and grants available. The out of state costs are roughly double. This is just plain nuts for undergrad. Many of my eldest child's friends who were very accomplished in HS and are just average middle class kids are going to community college and then planning on transferring to UM in two years (saving over $50k).
My second child is looking at some high profile private schools with huge price tags but once you do all the FAFSA, scholarships and new found school policies come into play the price tag magically comes down to UM's level or lower, especially if you are not white, upper middle class or male.
This all makes airline pricing and IRS tax code seem logical.

I mean if OSU can have women's hockey why can't we?
Trivia you would like: former UM and NHL player Chris Tamer and his wife Keely, who was captain of UM's field hockey team, eldest child, Emma, will come play field hockey for UM in 2017. She is quite a hockey player too.
The women could play in the ice cube since the US under 18s have moved away. The men's water polo team already exists and plays at Canahm and would need a minimal investment. Like softball and field hockey, Michigan is a relative hot spot for these potential varsity sports. At first you probably need to recruit more outstate but a Michigan pipeline would be inevitable.
|21 weeks 1 day ago||It is what it is...||
I watch every game but am not very emotionally invested in this team. They are trying hard and are good kids but we are just not a very competitive team for many reasons. Seeing Caris and Spike on the bench every game, likely to include Senior Night, just seems to make it worse.
Whether it is the NCAAs or the NIT, I'll be supporting the team but my expectations are minimal and I'll just enjoy the ride. Go Blue!

|21 weeks 5 days ago||I hit a HR off Ernie Banks||
Worked at Kraft headquarters in Glenview right out of B School in 1985. Our Ad agency put on a client boon doggle function with a big softball game of client versus agency. They hired celebrities too make it incredibly cool. Mr Cub, Earnie Banks is pitching and the bases are loaded with our team down. The CEO calls the young snot nosed kid to come in to pinch hit. Nancy Faust is playing the organ. I step up to a rendition of Hail to the Victors and am so jacked up that I cork screw myself into the dirt missing badly on the first pitch. Ernie is spendingmost of the time eyeing the hot ladies on our team and throws a meatball right down the middle. I didn't miss and it was like Robert Redford in The Natural. I just floated around the bases and had Ernie autograph the ball. He was a great guy.
We also had William "the refridgerator" Perry as a spokesperson for Mac and Cheese that year. I'm think he was more popular than Jesus in Chicago during that time.
|21 weeks 5 days ago||I started one of these brawls and then hid like a scared wimp||
Shot oranges and snow balls with a funnelator (funnel and surgical rubber tubing stolen from Chem department) from the middle of West Quad over Rumsey into windows of South Quad. The football players there were mad as hornets came out and start challenging Rumsey house. Next thing you know everyone empties out and it's like the Wings Avalanche war. Cops came.. some blood spilled... but everyone couldn't wait to do it again. Do they still do this? Good times.

Adams House still was an athletic force in IM during my days. Also some prolific partiers. Don't know how half those guys stayed academically eligible. Rumsey vs Adams were legendary matches.
Great story by the way!
|21 weeks 5 days ago||Bowling memory||
For some reason bowling was huge in my middle school. Scores were posted everywhere, the coolest teacher was the sponsor, it was the cool after school social event... The high score of season was 197 by a girl who was quite frankly was a bitch. My teacher, the sponsor, used to lament to all the boys in class,"How can you let this girl have the season's high score?!". This was during the Bobby Riggs/Billy Jean King chauvinist era (obviously). Anyway, weeks go by with the same old bad results. Then one magical day it all come together. I have a 105 in the 5th and the season record is within reach. Soon crowds are getting bigger and bigger, like Judge Smale in CaddyShack, each time I throw. All the boys are cheering me on, even my teacher is there encouraging me by saying he won't flunk me if I break 197. Shit, I was sweating like crazy just hoping not to throw a gutter ball. Somehow I throw alterating strikes and spares and have a 185 in the ninth with a spare in the 10th on a wobbly conversion. All I need is three pins on my last throw to restore order in the bowling universe. All I remember was the ball slipping out of my hand due to sweat and then somehow it hits the pocket. Next thing I know the pins explode, I get a strike for a 205, and before I turn around I'm being carried off the alley...It was like something from The Wonder Years.. and in true form all the girls I was trying to impress were pissed at me,lol.

At center Cwebb was the most spactacularly talented, Bill Buntin may have been the best all around player, Rudy T the best shooter, and Phil Hubbard I feel would have been the best if he had stayed healthy. Tarpley may have been best had he stayed clean.
I've had this bar room discussion with people smarter than me and Bill Bunton seems to be the consensus. He was All American in two of his three years and always averaged over 20 points and double digit rebounds.
|21 weeks 5 days ago||Ruth, Orr, Jim Brown, et al all would be dominant||
Ruth was a record setting pitcher, hit as many home runs as most entire teams, and hit home runs in some parks that have dimensions that are bigger than today. His called shot was estimated at 500 feet and he wasn't on steroids. Baseball has more nerd analysts than any other sport and Ruth is gereally regarded as the greatest player ever.
