One reason I think Walton's toe is obviously a significant part is that he (at least in a feelingsball way, because I don't have the data) seemed to finish much better last year at or near the rim. And we know he's at the very least not less-strong than last year after another year in the S&C program. So the explanation has to be the injury is killing his explosion both in driving and jumping?

Walton is just starting to look close to right again. Spike needs surgery. AndvI think when Irvin took that hit in the Syracuse game it caused enough to affect his form so he's been off. The Bears aren't going to pay him the 7-8 million he'd command. They're the least of my worries as far as competition with Michigan, and I'm a Bears fan. I mean, only a week or two ago everyone figured Trestman was safe because the Bears owners are cheap and wouldn't want to let Trestman go with multiple years left on his deal, but their hand has been forced by the team pretty obviously quitting on him.

Sightline-wise, it's one of the best in the NFL. In their attempt to try to keep the historic colonnades (they lost their National Register designation anyway), they were forced to build the stadium within the old stadium. This makes the stadium steeper than many, but also means that even seats toward the top are not super-far away from the field horizontally so I think they end up with the best cheaper seats in the league. It's also not a big stadium by capacity.
I'm not even sure you'll have to worry about jerky fans much either. You run into them everywhere in the league really, but with the team pretty much having quit, lots of fans will sell their tickets or just not go, and those that do show up will probably not really give a crap or will be there as much to boo as anything.

They were just shooting an ungodly percentage. I mean, one of them was a stepback 3 with Walton draped all over him. Another one was from like 30 feet. They hit a running floater from 7, 8 feet out with our best defender (Caris) practically in his shorts AND Doyle getting over to challenge. Sometimes they just can't miss.
The defensive problems were more in regards to them getting in the lane at will for a while. The D tightened up on that and then everything they threw up there went in anyway.

Ole Miss is not the same thing as Mississippi State. That's like saying "well, Michigan draws recruits and Michigan State has great facilities so MIchigan State can do the same thing." Granted, Ole Miss is not exactly comparable to Michigan as a historical program, but Michigan State also has way more credibility historically than their MSU counterpart. But within Mississippi, Ole Miss is the "big brother".

The Cubs have largely eschewed pitching prospects in that farm system build. Their starting pitching is Arrieta and a bunch of back end guys at best (Hendricks was probably a fluke and is generally considered maybe a 4 at best, and their best pitching prospect in the minors is a guy few think can hold up as a starter) so they're going to have to fill in by either buying those starters or trading some of that position depth for it.
Damn near everyone thinks they'll be the ones who end up with Lester (he doesn't cost a draft pick if you sign him either), and Masterson is exactly the kind of guy they have been signing in the offseason the last couple of years as it is. Peavy has been flipped by teams at the last two deadlines, so that'd probably be the though there (and amusingly, said teams who traded for him won the title both years, so obviously if you want to win the title you should trade for Jake Peavy at the deadline). Robertson would surprise me because I can't imagine giving up a draft pick for a reliever, but if they already decide to do it with Martin (and that pick would be their second rounder as their first is protected I believe) then they may as well go for the gusto and grab some others who would cost a pick.

But that's the thing - run it more like a pro team, and make the experience less college (and all the fuzzies that go with that) and more pro, and you get treated like a pro team, where fans say "screw this" when the team isn't winning and refuse to pay the pro prices.

Also, the student-athletes as customers of the AD is pretty significant sign that the AD thought of things in the wrong way, and that mindset set the tone for how things have gone the last few years. The student-athletes are not the customers. They are not buying the product. They ARE the product (and, gulp, employees). When people are your product, you should treat those people well because happy people make for better product. It sounds like the Brandon administration did that well. That's good. We all want our student-athletes taken care of. It's part of why we flipped our shit over Morris.
But if your attitude is that the student-athletes are the customers, not the alums and fans and whatnot? It explains a lot of how things have been operating, that's for sure.

These two changes have been such big changes in style that I thought 3 or 4 years was warranted. RR had a pretty sizeable talent deficit to try to dig out of along with a wholesale change of the offense. Hoke's staff had some talent issues to deal with in certain important spots and again, a big change in offense. Talent issues take time, because recruiting can take a few years. You can't magically make upper class offensive lineman just appear.
However, there's no reason if Michigan hires a guy who can use the talent on hand on offense (be it pro-style or passing spread, I think either can work with what we've got with the right guy) that this team can't be good in a hurry. There's depth and there's talent. Even if Hoke and his staff hasn't been able to get coach it up, he's really done a good job bringing the talent level back up.

For example, Ruffin McNeill might be on the older side (and ECU is his alma mater), but he'd likely bring an Air Raid OC, which would probably work fine with the guys we will have.
Of course, if the offense gets it figured out, Hoke might not be done after this year. I think the defense is there. And the special teams, well, we'll all just continue to shake our heads at that one.

We all need to remember that those bulletproof recruiting classes, when he's had a full cycle to recruit, are only juniors and reshirt sophomores at the oldest this season. We need to see what these offensive lines look like as upperclassmen. The defense sure looks like it's going to be there this year, now full of Hoke's guys. Barrett had the redshirt year to study the playbook but with the injury he might have only slightly more reps than a true freshman. They're probably going to lose a couple of games as a result. Even in a Meyer offense there's still decisionmaking that you can't reproduce in film study.
Of course, by the last game of the season he'll have had plenty of reps (barring injury) or he'll have been bad enough that they've already made a switch.

And he'll have a year in a S&C program that has produced some pretty good results so far before he gets on the court.
I'm not seeing a ton of downside here. I mean, people freaked out over using a scholarship on Spike at the time and he's been a contributor to the team the last two years. Plus, unless this kid completely blows up (a good problem to have) we're going to have a 6'8"+ 3-bomber when he's 23, 24 years old because he took a prep year and is now redshirting due to the transfer.

Which is to say, I don't believe it at all. Chemistry doesn't call plays, it doesn't cause guys to just completely fail at blocking, etc. There is chemistry involved in a good offensive line but it comes from playing together a lot and knowing what the other guys are going to do, not "man, that guy next to me is a dick, why don't I not block this guy and get my QB splattered"

Even more so in the playoffs, when you can easily drop a pitcher or two from the roster given the days off that are involved and add some other specialists to the bench.

But yeah, maybe they play the 4-2-3-1 some that they have done a lot over the last couple of years but that's probably going to be in a game like Germany where they're severely out-talented and probably need the extra defensive help. Evans could conceivably play in that formation as long as Beasley is the left back. But I think it's got to be Beasley-Bedoya on the left side starting every match if possible, especially with the 4-4-2 diamond.
Beckerman is a good sub for Jones when we're holding a lead, and given Jones' proclivity for picking up cards, there's a good chance we need ol' dreadlocks to start a game if the team gets out of the group stage.

Thing is, the Masters isn't going to lose one ounce of "otherness" feeling with women and minority members of Augusta. Its appeal is based on
2) The tournament being on the same course year after year after year (this is one reason why the Masters rather than the US Open is the major that the most people watch)
3) That course being incredibly beautiful when the tournament is played, something that has only been magnified with our fancy HD TVs
4) The course is near-impossible to get on, even by private club standards
5) The course is a wonderful design for tournament golf with its opportunities to make up or drop shots in a hurry on the back 9.
6) If you manage to get a ticket, they treat their "patrons" wonderfully on site. Food and drink are as cheap as a high school football game. They make it a real experience, even for people who end up with Monday practice round tickets. I haven't been but I know people who have and everyone says it was worth so much more than they paid, and these are people travelling from Chicago to Augusta to do it.

I lay a fair bit of blame for the crappier NBA period at the feet of the Bad Boys Pistons. Pat Riley took that style to its logical end with the Knicks and Heat except with less talent than the Pistons had; between the Pistons having actual talent and their opponents being entertaining teams like the Celtics, Lakers, etc it was still fine to watch. But as more teams followed the Rileyball method of "they can't call everything", and add in some talent deficit as the great mid-80s talent wave got old, and yeah, the late 90s and early 2000s were pretty ugly. Between rule changes and an influx of talent though the last few seasons have been pretty great.
