I don't know if it's that surprising that Sabonis had pretty advanced skills considering his dad was one of the most skilled centers the NBA has ever had even though he came to the NBA with already-destroyed knees and other problems - great passer, shot 37% from 3 his first two years in the league, etc. You have that kind of skill around as the guy you're learning the game from and you're bound to develop your skills earlier, right?

|3 weeks 2 days ago||Yeah, I concur, the first one||
Yeah, I concur, the first one hitting him right in the chin with the helmet after Rudock throws a pass is targeting, but the one he got hurt on, I don't know how you could call that one targeting. The guy is lining up the tackle to hit Rudock in the midsection, and then Rudock starts sliding and drops down, I don't know how you can call that on someone. He's not going to be able to react that quickly. The result sucked for us, but it shouldn't be a targeting call.
From AFCA: Target—to take aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with an apparent intent that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball.
And in the hints for players, "Lower your target--don’t go for the head or neck area with anything" - that seems to be exactly what the tackler was doing on the second one, going for the body, not the head/neck, and then Rudock changed his level by initiating the slide. And was hit with the guy's chest, not shoulder/forearm/helmet/elbow. Rudock is also not considered a defenseless player on the second one, whereas on the first one he likely is.

Most of those guys have been together (under Kill) for 10, 15 years and followed him up the ladder. |4 weeks 1 day ago||Oh, it was incompetence. And||
Oh, it was incompetence. And no surprise the replay guy was a moron, this is the same conference that employed a replay official that a few years back overturned a correct incomplete pass ruling and apparently thought that no feet down, one foot in the air hitting the pylon was sufficient for a touchdown.
Just our bad luck that the flagrant incompetence heavily slanted against our guys this time. Usually when refs blow that many calls they sort of even out, but the calls missed both went substantially against Michigan and some of them were enormous calls (wiping out the interception, the TD where there was holding that could have only been more obvious if he'd have actually ripped RJS's jersey, etc)

I didn't mind it, and an onside that goes farther than a typical one is a good option there. You don't put them practically in field goal range already. And I think it was calculated that either MIchigan would recover, or it would goad Maryland into passing the ball instead of just kneeling on it (which they likely would have done if the kick had gone deep). But if Maryland throws the ball, with that turnover machine at QB, you have a shot at getting the ball in great field position that way too even if you don't recover the onside kick. And then you potentially get another shot on the punt to either try to block it or a Peppers return.
Didn't end up working out, but didn't hurt them either. Kind of thing you can do when your defense is eating the other team for lunch and you have a returner who you think can break one.

|11 weeks 1 day ago||One of the biggest problems||
One of the biggest problems with Brandon approaching the whole thing like he would a business is a college AD requiring a different way of thinking about the enterprise. College football in particular rides on tradition and nostalgia and such. Without those sorts of things unrelated to the game on the field, and the fan's connection to the team, you are left with minor league football. You don't sell 100,000 tickets to minor league football. In such an enterprise where tradition and nostalgia matter so much, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" is the right mindset. Tickets were sold out, there was a substantial waiting list, etc. There were things that could be done on the margins but the basics of it were humming along very well.
In the business world though, the general thinking is you need to continue to improve things, to innovate, to grow. "If it ain't broke, break it" is a mindset for that kind of enterprise. So we got an AD who did all sorts of things that aggravated the paying customers likely in the name of innovation and the like. But we don't WANT innovation in the athletic department, or a so-called "wow" experience. Our "wow" experience is walking into Michigan Stadium and seeing 110,000 people in the stands, the band playing, and the connection with past favorite teams and (for many) our college or grad school years. And obviously, we want the onfield product to be good. Brandon took shots at the tradition and nostalgia that brings people back, so when the team's results were ugly, people had much less reason to go, and attendance collapsed.

When I moved into this place, Comcast didn't have HD wired up and AT&T Uverse wasn't available yet either, DirecTV was the only realistic option, but I've liked them. They are indeed pricey, although if you call and complain you can often get reductions and free stuff.

Well, you're hitting my favorite of the brewpubs as far as atmosphere if you're going to Dark Horse. Since you're already going to Marshall you may as well swing through Kzoo to Bell's - they sometimes have stuff at their "General Store" next to the pub that they either don't sell elsewhere or only sell in Michigan. A couple blocks from Bell's is a beer bar called Kalamazoo Beer Exchange, which is unique with their dynamic pricing. Every 15 minutes the prices change based on who's buying what. A few times they have a market crash where for 15 minutes everything is its lowest possible price. Quite a few of their taps are locals typically. At the very least it's an amusing concept, and a place to try some other Michigan beers.
In GR, Vivant and Founders are the heavy hitters. I liked Hideout, it's definitely in an odd spot. Hopcat is an excellent beer bar with good food.
Since you're driving up from NW Indiana (as you're going by Munster) Greenbush is less than a mile off the highway well before you'd turn off to go up to GR. If I remember correctly The Livery is also before that too, farther off the highway, but good beers.
I know much less about newer ones as it's been a while since I rolled around the state visiting places (live in Chicago).

I think if you see what Tyus himself was saying, and then what happened, there's a pretty strong inference that Tyus wanted to go to Michigan and his parents basically made him go to Syracuse. Now why that is, we won't know unless someone spills the beans at some point, but Syracuse hasn't exactly been on the up-and-up (see, e.g., their current sanctions) so wondering what exactly transpired there isn't unreasonable.
And I get the feeling that whatever was going on, Tyus had nothing to do with it himself. I think if it were solely up to him, he never even would have decommitted.

He was the owner and he didn't give a shit what any of us thought or did. This is an owner that actually said that Stanley Cups were too expensive. Literally the only things we could do is stop showing up and hope eventually he'd start actually losing enough money to give a shit, and pray for his death. Wirtz died just before the '07-'08 season. Attendance increased by 4000 a game that season, and then up to averaging a sellout the following year.
You Lions fans have had it GREAT with the Fords compared to the Hawks under Bill Wirtz. Imagine that now that the Lions make the playoffs and the best players are expensive, the owner mandates that they trade or let go of Megatron, Stafford, and anyone else expensive, including trading a fan-favorite star who grew up in the Detroit area to the Bears or Packers. Because that's what Wirtz did in the 90s. Out went a 25 year old Roenick, out went an in-his-prime Belfour, and then out went Chelios, the fan favorite, born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, to the Red Wings. That's when attendance started to drop from consistent sellouts/near-sellouts they'd had the previous 15-ish years.

|31 weeks 6 days ago||1991 Proviso East. Undefeated||
1991 Proviso East. Undefeated Illinois state champions, three seniors who went on to play in the NBA (Michael Finley, Sherrell Ford, Donnie Boyce), and the rest of the team was so good that even after those three guys graduated, they still won the state title the next year.
Crazy part is Finley, the one who had the long fruitful NBA career, was not the biggest star on that team. Sherrell Ford was the #1 guy, but he was a Prop 48 that had to sit out a year of college and ended up at UIC instead of a major conference school as a result, and didn't develop as well as Finley did.
I don't count private schools that can recruit among the best because they can choose their team. Proviso East was public, didn't (couldn't) recruit, but had a hell of a program. In addition to those guys, they also sent Doc Rivers, Steven Hunter, Dee Brown, Shannon Brown to the NBA, and piles of other guys to college programs.

The cowbell Go Blue, the chanting Go Blue across the stadium, other ways people get noise going, those tend to be discouraged by piped-in music. The stadium experience wasn't broken in the early 2000s. It wasn't stone-age, and I like the bigger video boards we have now, but to me music at college football games should be the band when you have a great band the way a Michigan or Ohio State does. Pipe in stuff when the band isn't able to play because they're heading down to the field for halftime, or have finished the halftime show and are getting back to their seats, etc.
Some of the piped-in music can be fun (like Norfleet's Atomic Dog routine). Use it for fun stuff like that and I think everyone is cool with it. Use it all the time and it becomes another generic football experience.

I steer people away from law school who would be taking out loans and don't know exactly what they want to do. There just aren't the jobs out there to support it, and a many people who graduate end up with no job in law, or a low-paying one, and have crushing non-dischargeable debt that they can't pay back. Sightline-wise, it's one of the best in the NFL. In their attempt to try to keep the historic colonnades (they lost their National Register designation anyway), they were forced to build the stadium within the old stadium. This makes the stadium steeper than many, but also means that even seats toward the top are not super-far away from the field horizontally so I think they end up with the best cheaper seats in the league. It's also not a big stadium by capacity.
I'm not even sure you'll have to worry about jerky fans much either. You run into them everywhere in the league really, but with the team pretty much having quit, lots of fans will sell their tickets or just not go, and those that do show up will probably not really give a crap or will be there as much to boo as anything.
