Game's probably closer if Glasgow could play, since the way to beat them was to force them to throw it downfield at our very good secondary. But if you can't stop the run, they aren't going to bother throwing it much.
And yeah, they were loaded with talent. How they turtled themselves into losing to an MSU team playing without its QB is still beyond my comprehension.

There is definitely a huge difference between the magic injury getting the 5th year, and using it to get a 6th year. Or at least, you would think there would be. I mean, there's loads of evidence from MSU's own site that Davis wasn't hurt that first year, what with his "scout team player of the week" honors in there. I don't know how they walk that back, unless the NCAA just doesn't give a shit, and being that 6th years are pretty rarely granted, the NCAA probably does give a shit.
I think they're less worried about the 5th year ones because you're not having a guy a year beyond what you could have anyway.

To expound, prep school is still considered high school for NCAA eligibility purposes and thus it doesn't count against your years of eligibility to play football - you still have the 5 years to play 4 years.
It's more common in basketball. Spike is an example, a family friend of mine did it as well, go play a 5th year out east to play against better competition, fill out more if you're a skinny dude (friend was a 6'8" beanpole), get seen by more schools, and get a D-1 scholarship out of it.

I might be in the minority but I actually like having Johnson as a left back along with Yedlin at right. He's better suited as a technical director. His motivation, name, and recruiting are all big assets there, it helps him get things done that have been sorely needed for a long time in order for US soccer to take the next steps needed. The MLS was kind of on its way to academies but I think Klinsmann helped that push. There's no way the US would ever take the next step in development without more ability to get kids into elite training and programs without it costing said kids piles and piles of money as it has for many years. We're frankly very lucky that we have Clint Dempsey at all; there are probably 10, 100, who knows how many like him who also grew up without money but whose parents wouldn't or couldn't make the sacrifices (both financial and time) his parents did to get him to those clubs. Those kids play for their crappy high school coach that doesn't really know all that much about how to coach the game and thus the kids never develop at all.

Eh, FIFA is a ridiculous corrupt organization but the regional and national associations are the ones that would implement a lot of things. The vanishing spray that is now ubiquitous came from Brazil, then was used by CONMEBOL in the 2011 Copa as the first major competition to use it. FIFA adopted it soon after because it was obviously a good idea that was helpful for refs in enforcing the rules.
|7 weeks 5 days ago||The sideline officials and||
The sideline officials and 4th official never seem to adequately get the ref to call those ridiculous simulations that should be yellow cards under the rules already in existence. Maybe a video official that can buzz the ref and communicate would help. Retroactive carding is a nice idea, but it wouldn't help for, say, the Champions League Final where any action wouldn't take effect until the next season.
I get the difficulty in gauging whether a guy was fouled and embellished and once in a great while you see an unjust yellow for it, but for things like the Pepe incidents, it would be quite easy for the officials to card him, especially if someone can quickly review on video.

Michael Bradley could have played for a mid or lower table team in those big four leagues no problem. He was stuck on the bench for an upper echelon Serie A team, but he could have played for a lot of other teams in those leagues. He had previously played for a lower table Bundesliga side. I think with his workrate and physical nature he'd have been a natural for the Premeir League. But he chose to come back to MLS, and he looks worse than he did a couple years ago. The competition simply isn't as good.
Hell, Yedlin's loaned to a team that is struggling to avoid relegation in the Premier League. But he's playing a lot. And it's making him better.
For someone like Dempsey who's on the downswing, coming back made sense. Same drill for Howard, who had lost his Everton job. But when the younger guys and guys in their prime do it, it's not good for their games, and thus usually not good for the national team either.

Denard transferring could have allowed him an assault on NCAA record books. However, you could easily allow it if you changed the scholarship cap to a certain number given out per year rather than the 85 overall limit, since someone exploring their options wouldn't change the number you could sign.

Coaches from those Sun Belt schools (and FCS schools) work some of these satellite camps and get a live look at a bunch of prospects for the cost of "show up and coach" and might even get paid for it in some cases. They don't have to do any of the work to set it up, and "camp put on by coaches from Ohio State/Michigan/Nebraska/Whatever" is going to attract people a lot more than a Sun Belt camp would. Plenty of the articles out there note that a team like Georgia Southern was able to see a lot more guys by having coaches working various camps including satellite camps.
Once in a while they'll lose a guy to Power 5, but for teams that simply don't have the recruiting budget that some of the P5 teams have, those extra opportunities to evaluate and work with kids live was a much bigger positive for them than losing out on a guy on occasion.

I don't know if he'll win big at Illinois, but what Illinois needs to do first is to matter again at all, get some respectability. That I think Lovie can do. I think he'll actually be a pretty good recruiter, he's certainly beloved by his players. They need some sort of draw, a splash, to get back in the recruiting game, and this is a reasonable one. May as well take the chance - they already suck. And it's definitely got the backing of the boosters and grabbed interest of some of the fans who lost interest.
I also don't think Lovie will be heading back to the NFL. He's in his late 50s, and just got unexpectedly tossed by a NFL team. This seems likely to be his last stop.

There are a fair number of celebs in the field who are there to play specifically with a buddy on the Tour. Or the Tour guy committed to the event right after their buddy committed to the event. Jake Owen is with Speith for that reason, Josh Donaldson with Dufner, Toby Keith and Stricker, Bubba and Mark Wahlberg, obviously Gretzky plays with his son-in-law, etc.
Some of the others they'll assign with tie-ins. Jerry Kelly's a Wisconsin native and he's paired with Aaron Rodgers, for example. And Bill Murray used to be paired with various guys (and they checked with the pro beforehand because not all of them could deal with his antics) but he won the Pro-Am with DA Points (who's an Illinois guy) and Points won the pro title, and they've played together ever since.
So no, not random. I think some of them do get assigned somewhat randomly, but there's a decent chunk of the business guys that are there that get paired with a pro who their company sponsors, for instance.

If Michigan wants to invite other coaches, including FBS coaches, to its camp and some of those coaches want to do it, I don't see why it's any of the SEC's business. By that time, if kinks in the offense need to be worked out with the new QB, they ought to be largely fixed when we hit the three nasty road trips in the last 5 games.

At least next year's schedule allows O'Korn or whoever wins the job some time to get his feet under him. First 5 are at home, and none of the first 3 are against teams likely to be even mediocre (best of the bunch finished #98 in S&P+ this year and we don't see that team - Colorado - until game 3). So he'll have 3 to get acclimated, then face some real defenses at home in PSU and Wisconsin.
But man, the second half of the schedule, with the three road games being @MSU, @Iowa, @OSU, whoever's starting better be good by then.

|37 weeks 6 days ago||Yeah, I concur, the first one||
Yeah, I concur, the first one hitting him right in the chin with the helmet after Rudock throws a pass is targeting, but the one he got hurt on, I don't know how you could call that one targeting. The guy is lining up the tackle to hit Rudock in the midsection, and then Rudock starts sliding and drops down, I don't know how you can call that on someone. He's not going to be able to react that quickly. The result sucked for us, but it shouldn't be a targeting call.
From AFCA: Target—to take aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with an apparent intent that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball.
And in the hints for players, "Lower your target--don’t go for the head or neck area with anything" - that seems to be exactly what the tackler was doing on the second one, going for the body, not the head/neck, and then Rudock changed his level by initiating the slide. And was hit with the guy's chest, not shoulder/forearm/helmet/elbow. Rudock is also not considered a defenseless player on the second one, whereas on the first one he likely is.

Most of those guys have been together (under Kill) for 10, 15 years and followed him up the ladder. |38 weeks 5 days ago||Oh, it was incompetence. And||
Oh, it was incompetence. And no surprise the replay guy was a moron, this is the same conference that employed a replay official that a few years back overturned a correct incomplete pass ruling and apparently thought that no feet down, one foot in the air hitting the pylon was sufficient for a touchdown.
Just our bad luck that the flagrant incompetence heavily slanted against our guys this time. Usually when refs blow that many calls they sort of even out, but the calls missed both went substantially against Michigan and some of them were enormous calls (wiping out the interception, the TD where there was holding that could have only been more obvious if he'd have actually ripped RJS's jersey, etc)

I didn't mind it, and an onside that goes farther than a typical one is a good option there. You don't put them practically in field goal range already. And I think it was calculated that either MIchigan would recover, or it would goad Maryland into passing the ball instead of just kneeling on it (which they likely would have done if the kick had gone deep). But if Maryland throws the ball, with that turnover machine at QB, you have a shot at getting the ball in great field position that way too even if you don't recover the onside kick. And then you potentially get another shot on the punt to either try to block it or a Peppers return.
Didn't end up working out, but didn't hurt them either. Kind of thing you can do when your defense is eating the other team for lunch and you have a returner who you think can break one.
