Some coaches film WAS in color in those days. Look at the 1969 Vanderbilt game on my channel, look at the 1970 MSU game highlights, look at all the highlights from the early 70's in the 'Schembechler Years,' video that was released by M-Den....all coaches films, all in color.
The colored highlights from that OSU game have got to be from coaches' film, even the end zone shot of Tom Slade pitching the ball to Billy Taylor on the touchdown.
My uncle was a student at UM at the time as was a family friend. My dad complained about not being able to see the game on TV. And it was mentioned in the book, ' The Ten Year War," that it wasn't televised.
I wasn't alive but I tend to trust those sources who were. It remains the only game from the Ten Year War that is impossible to find anywhere online and I think there is reason for that. But that's just my lame critical thinking skills at work here.

|15 hours 37 min ago||The last time THE GAME was||
The last time THE GAME was not televised was 1971. Michigan was 10-0 but OSU was only 6-3 so ABC figured the matchup wasn't worthy of being on TV, and America missed out on seeing Woody Hayes lose his sh*t and throw the sideline markers at the refs after the Thom Darden interception.
As far as I know, only twice in the 70's was a Mich/MSU game televised...on ABC in 1975 and 1979. ABC chose to air Michigan's game with Minnesota in 1976 over our game with Sparty. MSU was not relevant to get any national attention...when all was right with the world.
I've been told the 1994 Minnesota game at the big house was not televised. My copy of the game, that I traded for online, is from some network in Minneapolis that aired the game.
Likewise, Michigan's games against Wisconsin in 1988 and 1990 were not televised, as far as I know, in Michigan. But some Wisconsin station broadcasted them and I got the copies. The commentators are awful Badger homers and once we're up by 50, they start taking jabs at us and Bo, which is really funny. A Wisconsin fan taking trash about Michigan in 1988 would be the same as a New Mexico State fan talking trash about Alabama today.

|1 week 5 days ago||Of all the things to get||
Of all the things to get hyped for this game, I would rank this at the bottom. Because we could take over the winning % this season regardless of what happens on Saturday. Or we could be trading it back and forth for a while. Or ND could vacate their wins (doubtful) and the record book would say they never took over the top spot last year. The bottom line is that this Saturday's game isn't the be all end all to achieving permanent #1 status for winning %.
Ten years ago, we had the opportunity to overtake the #1 all time winning % by winning in South Bend and unfortunately, we lost to a shitty Notre Dame squad 28-20. (It was bad timing as Henne was thrust into the QB spot the previous week and this was his first road game, Mike Hart's talents weren't discovered until the following week and the team just hadn't found their mojo yet.) The weeks that followed, we kept winning and ND kept losing and we overtook the #1 spot a short time later anyway and kept it until last year's bowl season.
So really, the winning % would just be a sliver of icing on top of the cake. The rest of the icing would consist of this being the final meeting combined with their psycho purple faced coach. The cake part would be the fact that they're ND and as I always say, fuck Notre Dame.

Doug Karsch brought this up on the radio two years ago, Notre Dame conveniently ending the series after getting one more home game in, making it an uneven number of games since the series renewed. Even though he didn't want to see the series end, he thought we should have dropped the 2014 game.
But if we did that, you're not going to find a decent non-conference opponent to fill that slot in less than two years and we probably would have been stuck with another MAC school.

I flicked the radio on after TD's because of the delay and then listened to the post game recap. I thought they were OK. I like both guys so much though that I enjoy listening to them talk about anything.

Almost all my hopes were satisfied for this game: No interceptions by Gardner, offensive line actually opening up holes for the running backs, intensity on defense. Only thing that pissed me off was that 97 yard drive against the second stringers. But it's nice that's the main thing that annoyed me. It would have been nice to see another receiver step up besides Funches but there were only 14 passes so I'll live.

The Schembechler years, before we started playing Notre Dame, was filled with non-conference schools that were nowhere near Ann Arbor. Well, there were a few that were a couple states away but not many.
1969: Washington, Missouri, Vanderbilt
1970: Arizona, Washington, Texas A&M
1971: Virginia, UCLA, Navy

1974: Colorado, Navy, Stanford
1975: Stanford, Baylor, Missouri

But this was normal. No MAC schools or 1-AA teams in those days.
In 1983, we played just two non-conference games, Washington and Washington State so we could play every team in the Big Ten. But it was just Michigan and a couple other schools that did this. I'm not sure why that was allowed.

But the other 358 days a year, they showed 1 Michigan win for every 5 gut wrenching losses. Literally, I added them up. The crazy thing about that channel was how UM heavy it was when it came to showing college football classics. It was roughly 75% Michigan and 25% the rest of college football.
Around 2001, I emailed Classic at their official site a three page list of Notre Dame and OSU losses that I thought would be perfect for viewers to relive but I never got a response. But it wasn't long before that station fizzled out anyway.

|3 weeks 6 days ago||Unfortunately, Fall weddings||
Unfortunately, Fall weddings are very popular now. If you're a Michigan fan and must get married this time of year, the LEAST you can do is get married during the bye week. But they rarely do.
I had weddings on back-to-back Saturdays during the 07 season. Both were for friends I had known since pre-school. I had to go. At that time, we were 2 games removed from "the horror," we were 0-2 and Henne was out for a couple weeks with a leg injury. Normally I'd be jacked for Notre Dame but we were in such an awful place, I was afraid to know what was going on. As soon as the wedding was done, I walked out to the parking lot, took a deep breath and then called my dad for a score update. He told me it was halftime and Michigan was up 31-0. Biggest relief EVER.
The following week against Penn State, I took a tiny battery operated hand held TV with me to the church and hid it in my pocket but the game didn't actually start until the wedding was finished and there was a 2 hour wait between the wedding and reception. We made it to the reception during the 3rd quarter with Michigan up 14-9. We all walked into the dining hall and they started the blessing as the last minute ticked off the clock. Everyone had their heads bowed, I had my head bowed trying to hide the little muted TV under the table cloth. The blessing and game ended simultaneously. Everyone said "Amen!" I said, "Amen!" for a different reason. But nobody else needed to know that.

I was a mess the day Bo died, as everyone else was. But there were two moments that day that stood out above the rest.
The local news went to the hospital Bo was in and Jim Brandstatter, John Wangler and Jamie Morris were already there looking in complete shock. When they interviewed the three men, Jamie Morris was practically sobbing. Seeing Morris, who is such a funny guy, like that made me lose it.
Then later in the afternoon on WTKA, they relived a touching Bo moment from a few months earlier. Tom Slade (1971 Michigan quarterback) had been battling leukemia. After a particularly painful day in the hospital, Slade woke up in his hospital bed to see Bo by his side sitting in a chair against the wall. They looked at each other but said nothing. Then Salde went back to sleep. Five hours later, he awoke to see Bo still sitting in that same chair. Once again I lost it BIG time. The two men ended up dying 8 days apart.
And now I've seriously depressed myself. Somebody needs to post something funny now.

I'm not going to get angry over us not being ranked. We came off a crap season which ended with us looking like crap against a crap team in a crap bowl game. And preseason rankings don't mean anything. However, that's not going to keep me from casting judgment on the other teams. So here goes.
1. USC at #15 sounds a little too generous.
2. Did Missouri graduate half their team from last year? 24th sounds awfully low to start after the year they had last season.
3. Notre Dame at #17 also sounds generous even before the academic fraud thing broke. Does the return of Everitt Gholston mean THAT much? Also, FUCK Notre Dame.
4. Alabama at #2 despite losing AJ McCaron just depresses me but it doesn't surprise me when Saban can buy pretty much any player he wants.
5. Six PAC 12 teams in the top 25? Did that conference get good while I wasn't looking?
6. I guess I can't argue the Bucks being in the top ten but 5/6 does sound generous after the defensive woes they had last year. 9/10 sounds more deserving.

You have a classic, historical look that you DON'T mess with. Even if it's just one game. Every other team in America, they can do this alternate jersey crap but these schools? No."

I tried for years to find the answer to this question - the exact year and opponent that Keith Jackson first called Michigan Stadium 'the Big House.' I researched online and could find nothing. Two years ago, I registered on 5 different forums just to ask fellow blue bloods if they knew and nobody could give me an answer. But several fans on TheVictors.com said they remembered hearing Brent Musberger use the term a few times in the 80's.
I'd upload the 5 second clip of him first using the term if I knew what game it was.

Those were good times when they used to keep one gate open year round.
I remember a few times during the summer, going in there on the field and standing in the end zone spots where so many game winning plays happened. It was such a weird yet epic feeling to have the stadium all to yourself.
While I miss those days, I can understand why they started locking everything up because it's too easy to go in there and vandalize something. Someone cut out half of the block M at mid field during one of the RichRod years.

Moment of Zen was very memorable. Drew Brees already with a ton of hype from the year before (when he didn't have to play us or OSU). Rainy homecoming. Lloyd Carr wondering why we were playing a Brees led Purdue team when the homecoming game is SUPPOSED to be an easy opponent.
Half of Purdue's points were thanks to 2 fumbles by A-Train deep in our own territory that they turned into field goals. Brees played OK. Boiler receivers dropped a ton of passes.
Lloyd was still doing the quarterback survey thing. Brady starts the 1st quarter, Henson starts the 2nd quarter and then coaches meet at halftime to decide who plays the rest of the game.

I wasn't at 95 Purdue but I have the full game in my collection. The ESPN camera shows a full view of the stadium and there is definitely 100,000 at kickoff. But the 2nd quarter is a completely different story. People made it because the morning started out warmer but the weather took a nosedive really quickly. I don't think the fans expected it to get that bad so fast and they, understandably weren't going to stick around. By the start of the second quarter, there were at least 30,000 that had already left.
I know Michigan's attendance numbers have been suspect at times but I don't think 95 Purdue should count. They showed up and they were on time. They just left really early. Now the 2011 Purdue and Minnesota games I went to with the almost empty student sections is a different story. I didn't believe those numbers when they were announced.

The what if scenario. Oregon's trip to the big house was originally scheduled for the 2002 season. But with a trip to Notre Dame and a home game against Washington already on the non-conference slate, the schedule was considered too difficult. So Bill Martin rescheduled our home game with the Ducks to 2007.
No PAC Ten team had won at the big house in 23 years when Oregon came in 2007. I'm sure we would have done much better against them in 02 with Braylon, Perry and Navarre.

Keith struggled with names that day and he was not his vintage self. It was kind of depressing to hear.
The most confused Keith ever sounded, however, was during WSU's last drive against us in the 98 Rose Bowl when they got 50 yards on a blatant pushoff on Woodson who would have easily intercepted the pass to end the game. Keith's call on that was...
"And there is goes. It's...inference? No. Intercepted? Yes. Woodson inter...did Taylor catch it? Did he really?"

|9 weeks 1 day ago||My thoughts: WIDE RECEIVERS||
WIDE RECEIVERS - Perfect. Those 4 were truly the best. There's no way to argue with those picks.
QUARTERBACKS - This is where it could get messy. Leach and Harbaugh belong on there, no questions asked. Brady is given bonus points because of the NFL career (which really shouldn't count) but I'd take the 99 version of him being the comeback king. As far as college career goes, I would take Elvis Grbac over Brady. We played brutally tough schedules in his day - Notre Dame was an elite program at the time, Florida State, Boston College, Washington teams in the Rose Bowl led by QB Mark Brunell, plus we won big ten titles every year he was here and we never lost to Ohio State.
I think I like Chad Henne being on there with Denard just off the list. Please don't shoot me. Denard was likable, electric, and ran for an insane amount of yards. But the 40 interceptions keeps him down. I was scared to death every time he passed the ball.
If Drew Henson came back in 2001 and continued doing the kind of stuff he did the previous year, I would have to put him on there. I still maintain that he's the most all around talented QB we have had in my lifetime.
RUNNING BACKS: Wasn't alive to see Lytle and Johnson but their stats speak for themselves. Wheatley had to be on there. With the record, I have no problem with Hart being on there but I think Jamie Morris had some qualities that were more pleasing to watch. He was about the same size as Hart but with more speed. Whenever he got tackled, he almost always seemed to fall forward and get a couple extra yards. He ran the "long ball" more often while Hart had a ton of 10-15 yard runs through his career. They all added up in the end but Jamie's style was more fun to watch.

2005 Penn State was pretty sweet as well. I was back in the north end zone but the game winning play was on the other side. I could not see the ball after it left Henne's hands. I had to watch the crowd reaction to know we won. It was pure madness.

Memories of being at Braylonfest 2004.
*The game was a 4:30 kickoff. At the time, that was the latest start ever for a Michigan home game and I felt kind honored to be (what I thought would be) the closest thing to a night game the big house would ever see.
*Walking to the stadium, I made note of how windy it was and it immediately made me nervous for the kicking game. Sure enough, the wind never stopped and the stadium was dead silent for almost every PAT and field goal attempt.
*MSU was a horrible team but played waaaaaay beyond what was expected of them. I sat in the south end zone so I had to listen to MSU's band play that damn fight song so many times, I thought I was going to lose my mind.
*All the drama happened in the OPPOSITE end zone. Only a Mike Hart TD was scored in front of us in the 1st quarter.
*Lloyd was always extra stubborn when it came to the running game. The fans everywhere were screaming all day to throw the damn ball.
*I lost all hope once we were down 27-10. I didn't leave early. I just sat in my seat like a zombie. I debated ripping my ticket stub. Thank GOD I didn't. MSU fans started taunting us.
*Tim Massaquoi's 2 point conversion catch I couldn't see. I had to watch the crowd's reaction to know whether he caught it.
*I tried to scream in the overtimes whenever MSU was on offense but I was so nervous, I could barely make a sound. I sounded kind of like Peter Brady on that episode of the Brady Bunch where his voice changed.
*After MSU's last offensive attempt and the game was over, I could finally scream again. Then I turned around and hugged some random dude sitting behind me. He probably thought I was a nut but he was so happy he hugged me back. Then while the rest of the stadium was going nuts, I had to sit down because I felt like I was going to pass out.

|10 weeks 15 hours ago||I think the majority of us||
I think the majority of us who have followed the modern history of this rivalry are well aware that the outcome of this game has had little to do with the success (or lack of success) on the rest of the season. But we still obviously want to win it because...you know, FUCK Notre Dame.
As for your other points, I don't doubt that this rivalry has put together so many fantastic finishes the last 35 years. And yes, we probably SHOULD play every year. But that doen't mean I want us to anymore.
This goes beyond our painful memories with them like the ref in South Bend using an index card to see if Michigan got a first down or Carlyle Holiday leaving the ball behind on the 2 yard line and getting rewarded a touchdown.
It's the endless undeserved hype. The underserved NBC TV contract that continues to get renewed despite the fact that they are 24th in winning percentage since they got it. And then my personal breaking point came when after decades and decades of dodging conference invites, they figured out that they MUST be in one in this day and age but still make their own terms by saying they want to be a part time member. And then the ACC sacrifices their balls and agrees to it. That's not how it should be. You're either a full fledged conference member or you're not. I had always been annoyed at the special treatment ND got but once this "membership" happened with the ACC, I was done. When we stop playing them after this season, I will have a much easier time trying to stop getting mad over all the shit they get away with.

While technically true of those 3 games, only the Penn State game was a disaster for the defense. At least they showed up in the other 2.
The non-existent offense did us in against Iowa. And one of the (many) low points in the season for me was seeing our weak ass offense make Nebraska's 116th ranked defense look like world beaters.
The defense was painfully bad against Akron, Penn State, Indiana, OSU and Kansas State. Many times almost Gerg like with giving up big play after big play through shocking futility. I think we were so busy pulling our hair out over the offensive line that we overlooked how often the defense could not get the job done. We beat OSU and don't even have to settle for the 2 point conversion attempt if they just play a D+ to C- game. And giving up over 500 yards to Indiana is just wrong, wrong, wrong.

I have the game in my collection but it's my least favorite win over Notre Dame and not a game I revisit very often. Other than John Carney missing the last second field goal and some nice plays by Jamie Morris, there's not much about that game that's fun to remember. ND was unranked and finished the season unranked. That game should NOT have been close and ND never punted. Lou Holtz had them playing light years ahead of their talent in just his first game and they were sooooo close to knocking us off.

Not a losing program all time but at THAT time pretty bad. They had some pretty horrid seasons in the 90s as well.
It's kind of like USC before Pete Carrol arrived in 2001 and got them the best players money can buy. 60+ losses over an 8 year span, the college football world jokingly referring to them as SC Community College.

The streak against Indiana was the only winning streak that survived the RichRod years. But unfortunately, they know how to score and score often against our defense now.
Here's a fact that will blow your mind about the 87 Indiana game. The Hoosiers were the favorite for that one. They were ranked #15. Michigan was ranked #20. The way that game unfolded was a 10-7 4th quarter lead for us until Indiana blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for the game winning score, 14-10. Indiana was a decent conference team in the late 80's into the early 90's under Bill Mallory.
A happier memory from that 87 Indiana team was their 31-10 win over the Bucks in Columbus...

In 88, Taylor was lost for the year in the epic freezing Minnesota game at the Big House. And Brown took over the rest of the season. But he still came in and played in the blowouts, probably much earlier than you would see in a blowout today. Taylor got injured quite often and Brown needed to always be ready.
But I hear you on the 1988 squad. They were much better than their 9-2-1 record.
*Mike Gillette's game winning field goal against Notre Dame was just wide right in the final seconds. We lose 19-17 and those bastards go on to win the national title.
*The next week, we blow a 30-14 lead on #1 Miami. The Hurricanes pull a Notre Dame and during their comeback, seem to complete miracle play after miracle play combined with a miracle onside kick and we lose 31-30. That Miami team finished 12-1.
Two losses by a combined 3 points to the #1 and #2 teams in the country. And the tie against Iowa? We come back from a 17-3 hole, tie the game. In the 4th quarter, we put in one last drive. On first and goal from the 1 yard line, Tracy Williams fumbles the ball away. So the game ends 17-17.
For such a great team, they had so many instances of horrible luck. And the same villains in college football got to benefit from it once again.

Of all the interceptions Demetriuos Brown threw in that game, the 7th was the worst. You had Greg McMurtry absolutely wide open in the corner of the end zone and Brown didn't even glance at him, instead throwing the 7th pick.

But after that Minnesota game....
*56-14 over Illinois with the best punt return for a TD by Breaston ever.
*31-3 over a top ten Purdue team that came in with a ton of hype and was playing great football all year.
*27-20 over a MSU team that was coming off 6 straight wins and the media was suddenly in love with John L. (That game wasn't as close as the final score, it would have ended 34-13 had Navarre not fumbled on an unblocked sack that was returned 80 yards for a TD).

I used to think that way but not anymore.
Going 11-2 in 2011 with a Sugar Bowl victory didnt make a difference in the 2 B1G games I went to as the student section was half empty for the Minnesota game (which was Homecoming) and the Purdue game. Nebraska was ranked that year and I was shocked when I saw how many empty seats there were.
Those problems remained coming off that 11-2 season in 2012. A meh home schedule that year but we still went 6-0 at home with some classic games.
The reality is it doesn't matter how good or bad the product on the field is. The only sold out games are always going to be the rivalry ones or a top ten conference opponent. Students could care less about all the rest. I don't think they see any difference between a 8-4 Purdue team and a 2-10 Akron team. The prices are ridiculous but I don't think it would any different if they were cheaper.
Expanding the student section before the 2011 season seems like the biggest epic fail now.

The rich get richer. Florida goes two straight months without playing a ranked opponent in a crappy conference (which included several close call games) and now all the top seeds in their bracket are gone.
I want so desperately for them to get exposed but their schedule won't allow it.

After seeing the endless close games and overtime games the last 3 days, we've had it pretty well. Sweating out while up 11 tonight and thinking we suck after winning by 17 on Thursday. I'll take it.
Couldn't be in a better mood now. GO BLUE!!!!

Both Duke and North Carolina losing on opening weekend would have been the ultimate porn.

My GOD. Stop slobbering over Craft and give some love for a team who not only won but SHOULD have had this win wrapped up much earlier.

|26 weeks 2 days ago||Sooooooo happy about the win||
Sooooooo happy about the win and that last shot by Craft. But the 9 missed free throws was very hair-pull-out-worthy. We could have breathed a little easier earlier. (Although we wouldn't have had the chance to see the "slippery" ball out of Craft's hands.)
|26 weeks 2 days ago||Honestly, this surprises me.||
Honestly, this surprises me. I could see Duke getting the 1 seed ahead of us (provided they win their conference tournament) because of the head to head.....and the fact that they're Duke.

Oh boy. It's one of the toughest things in college basketball to beat a team 3 times in one season. I sense another nail biter.
When Izzo walks out on court during game play and the refs do nothing about it as always, our guys better just run him over.
|26 weeks 2 days ago||I thought that air ball in||
I thought that air ball in Columbus was the perfect way for Craft to end his career against us but that last play was pretty cool too.
Farewell to the 14th year senior losing 3 straight to us.
|26 weeks 3 days ago||Indeed. When Bo was hired,||
Indeed. When Bo was hired, his only "connection" to Michigan was being on the opposing sideline, on the coaching staff at OSU and Northwestern.
I think it's the former football players who wouldn't shut up about a "Michigan man" being the coach during RichRod where that term really took on a life of its own.
|26 weeks 3 days ago||Holy crap! Syracuse down 3||
Holy crap! Syracuse down 3 to NC State with 30 seconds left. They had 6 offensive rebounds to try and tie the score but missed them all.
That's more offensive rebounds than Michigan gets in a entire game.

I'm sure they'll relive the Evan Turner shot. Not that ESPN hasn't been overkilling that during commercials regardless.

After surviving a 2 point win over 12th seeded Purdue (where the Boliers had a chance to win it at the buzzer) and a huge comeback against Nebraska, is there any chance OSU is too tired against us tomorrow?
Whatever the case, be sure to put your TV's on mute tomorrow. It's going to be a non-stop Craft lovefest by the commentators.

Nebraska is 0-4 against us since joining the conference. But Ray Gallegos has gone nuts from 3 point land every time he plays us. He concerns me the most but the rest of the team playing as well as they are, it's going to be tough game.

This is the kind of game that always worries me. When we can't get the shots to drop, even when we have good looks, and can never get offensive rebounds, teams will be neck and neck with us....or worse.
Please play better tomorrow, blue.

The majority of us (myself included) predicted doom and gloom after that 1 point win at Nebraska. Amazing to think about that now.
The Arizona game... I still wonder how that game would have ended had McGray not been called for...breathing too hard on a Wildcat player, which gave them the game winning free throws. If the refs don't suck, that game might have gone to OT.
