*SIGH* 1996 OSU. I was in high school at the time and I had not yet become a pessimist when it came to sports. So when we were down 9-0 at halftime, there were no thoughts of doom and gloom. I knew we could come back and win. Then the second or third play of the 3rd quarter, Ty Streets takes that short pass to the house and at that moment, I felt we were going to come back and win.
Today, if Michigan is down 9 points, I've got no hope for a win.

I was at that game. Watching the offense was nice but the defense...good GOD. I had thought the days of the defense getting torched by Indiana was over with RichRod gone but nope. This was worse. IU continuously went down the field on our D with ease. Touchdown drives of 3 plays, 5 plays, 2 plays, it was disgusting.

This board was scared to death after seeing how awful the offensive line looked in that night scrimmage in August and then everyone was jacked after we beat App State. I think 95% of the posters here predicted us to win big in South Bend.
Don't be so hard on yourself. You're certainly not the only guilty party in this area.
|2 days 2 hours ago||I'm probably going to make||
I'm probably going to make you feel worse but here goes.
1. MSU's teams in 1978, 1990 and 1999 actually ended up being good squads.
2. Yeah, they got away with mugging Desmond on the 2 point conversion in 1990, the ref gave them a bogus extra yard on their game winning drive when we had stopped them on 4th down in 1995 and Spartan Bob gave them the extra second and the ref decided to ignore the massive holding on the game winning play in 2001...all painful blown calls that screwed us but for the rest of those games, those MSU teams put up fights that Hoke teams are completely incapable of putting up, especially the last two years, especially on the road.
3. MSU's teams in 93, 95 and 2001 stunk but they weren't the train wreck we currently are. Those teams were 6-6, 6-5-1 and 7-5. Do you see us winning 6 games this year because I certainly don't.
4. Harbaugh broke his arm in 1984 in the first half. Once he was out, that win was in the bag for MSU. Conner Cook isn't going to break any bones.
5. And being a Michigan fan means knowing that Michigan should never be the underdog in this series, as we weren't for 45 years. Now we're at the point where the majority of us believe we can't stay within 4 touchdowns of MSU. How fucking depressing is that?

East Lansing in 1985, we won 31-0 but still left about 17 points on the field with a missed field goal and two interceptions thrown by Harbaugh when we were going in for scores.
Still a nice win. A recap about this game in the Detroit News started with this...
"Spotting the University of Michigan two touchdowns is like giving Carl Lewis a 20-yard head start."
I miss the days of us being Carl Lewis. Today, we're more like a middle school kid running cross country but stopping every 30 feet to use our asthma inhalers.

Maybe I need to stop watching college football other than Michigan.
All the teams I hate most keep winning. They play well. They're not like us with endless 1 yard gains on the ground. Their QB's have time to throw. They don't get burned in the secondary (to our levels) They don't make crappy teams look like BCS contenders.
Combine all that with the mess we're in and you have a whole lot of suck.

Why the f*ck does OSU have to thrive so much even after losing Braxton Miller??? Yeah, their schedule is weak but they're doing what you're supposed to do to crappy teams and their players improve from week to week.
I'm so sick of this same script. Michigan makes Ruters look like a national title contender (at least offensively) and OSU finishes them off in the 1st quarter and could easily win by 60.
God, not even a bye week can give me peace.

Let's go on to less depressing subjects. Currently, this is probably the happiest us Michigan fans will be all season because last weekend's win combined with this weekend's bye week assures us of consecutive Saturdays with no pain....for the first time since October 2013.

I do kind of wonder how different the Minnesota game would have been had Gardner started. I know we were all frustrated with him at the time but Shane Morris was awful on epic proportions before he took the hit that started the madness.

Bo's reactions to players screwing up was pretty sweet. He'd get his anger and frustration out right away, as soon as the play finished. But he calmed down before the player reached the sideline and then had a talk with him that looked like a lecture but didn't look humiliating to the player, not like that asshole Brian Kelly.
Hoke is so calm that I think if a random stranger approached him on the street and screamed in his face, he'd just clap a few times and walk on. And he's probably been that way his whole life.
Although, if you watch any games from when Hoke was on the coaching staff under Carr, he actually did get animated once in a while on the sidelines and had expressions of disgust when a ref would make a bad call. So he is capable of getting mad, he just hasn't done it yet as a HC.

Ever notice how often these miracle hail Mary's are almost always won by the road team? Doug Flutie and Boston College winning at Miami, Nick Saban's LSU team winning the Bluegrass miracle at Kentucky, Northwestern at Minnesota several years back, Kordell Stewart at the big house, ASU at USC.
In Michigan's case, I guess our game ending hail Mary would be Dresibach to Mercury Hayes against Virginia...although that would probably be a mini-hail Mary. We also had halftime hail Mary's, Demtrious Brown to Greg McMurtry against Iowa in '87 and Todd Collins to Amani Toomer against NC State in the 93 bowl game but those are never as exciting as game enders.

This team is agonizing to watch. Nobody would disagree with that. But the salt on the wound for me is continuing to see how happy we make our opponents. Whether its Notre Dame's defensive coordinator smiling and jumping around like a kid on the last day of school or Minnesota players hugging, high fiving and congratulating each other halfway through the 3rd quarter like the game is already over or the Rutgers players skipping and prancing to the sidelines once we've come up with another 3 and out...I'm just sick of it.
I'm tired of every opponent acting like its time for victory formation against us with 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. I hate it. I want to punch them but at the same time, I don't blame them.

Indeed. It's yet another sad thing that we've been reduced to. But we heard it long before this season even started. Over the summer, Hoke and the players kept making the comment that last years team was a few plays away from being 10-3 instead of 7-6.
When you go by that mentality and completely ignore how GOD awful you looked from game 3 to game 13, I guess we shouldn't be surprised when we now hear that wins/losses are just a statistic.

Couldn't the same be done with Hoke? I could see him doing it out of loyalty to the school. Or was the Zook/Florida issue a rare thing?
Ironically, while Zook was considered a clown, he had a much better record against Florida's rivals (Tennessee, Georgia and FSU) than Hoke has at Michigan against ND, MSU and OSU. In fact, after Zook's firing, he got UF their first victory over FSU at Doak Stadium in 20 years, something even Steve Spurrier could never do.

The colored highlights from that OSU game have got to be from coaches' film, even the end zone shot of Tom Slade pitching the ball to Billy Taylor on the touchdown.
My uncle was a student at UM at the time as was a family friend. My dad complained about not being able to see the game on TV. And it was mentioned in the book, ' The Ten Year War," that it wasn't televised.

The last time THE GAME was not televised was 1971. Michigan was 10-0 but OSU was only 6-3 so ABC figured the matchup wasn't worthy of being on TV, and America missed out on seeing Woody Hayes lose his sh*t and throw the sideline markers at the refs after the Thom Darden interception.
As far as I know, only twice in the 70's was a Mich/MSU game televised...on ABC in 1975 and 1979. ABC chose to air Michigan's game with Minnesota in 1976 over our game with Sparty. MSU was not relevant to get any national attention...when all was right with the world.
I've been told the 1994 Minnesota game at the big house was not televised. My copy of the game, that I traded for online, is from some network in Minneapolis that aired the game.
Likewise, Michigan's games against Wisconsin in 1988 and 1990 were not televised, as far as I know, in Michigan. But some Wisconsin station broadcasted them and I got the copies. The commentators are awful Badger homers and once we're up by 50, they start taking jabs at us and Bo, which is really funny. |7 weeks 1 hour ago||Of all the things to get||
Of all the things to get hyped for this game, I would rank this at the bottom. Because we could take over the winning % this season regardless of what happens on Saturday. Or we could be trading it back and forth for a while. Or ND could vacate their wins (doubtful) and the record book would say they never took over the top spot last year. The bottom line is that this Saturday's game isn't the be all end all to achieving permanent #1 status for winning %.
Ten years ago, we had the opportunity to overtake the #1 all time winning % by winning in South Bend and unfortunately, we lost to a shitty Notre Dame squad 28-20. (It was bad timing as Henne was thrust into the QB spot the previous week and this was his first road game, Mike Hart's talents weren't discovered until the following week and the team just hadn't found their mojo yet.) The weeks that followed, we kept winning and ND kept losing and we overtook the #1 spot a short time later anyway and kept it until last year's bowl season.
So really, the winning % would just be a sliver of icing on top of the cake. The rest of the icing would consist of this being the final meeting combined with their psycho purple faced coach. The cake part would be the fact that they're ND and as I always say, fuck Notre Dame.

I don't care if the talent level isn't the same. Speaking as someone who had a 2nd row seat to witness the blocked field goal for The Horror, this felt good.
Almost all my hopes were satisfied for this game: No interceptions by Gardner, offensive line actually opening up holes for the running backs, intensity on defense. Only thing that pissed me off was that 97 yard drive against the second stringers. But it's nice that's the main thing that annoyed me. It would have been nice to see another receiver step up besides Funches but there were only 14 passes so I'll live.
Hopefully Peppers is alright. I liked what I saw from him in the first quarter.

The Schembechler years, before we started playing Notre Dame, was filled with non-conference schools that were nowhere near Ann Arbor. Well, there were a few that were a couple states away but not many.
1969: Washington, Missouri, Vanderbilt
1970: Arizona, Washington, Texas A&M
1971: Virginia, UCLA, Navy
1972: UCLA, Tulane, Navy
1973: Stanford, Navy, Oregon
1974: Colorado, Navy, Stanford
1975: Stanford, Baylor, Missouri
1976: Stanford, Navy, Wake Forest
1977: Duke, Texas A&M, Navy
But this was normal. No MAC schools or 1-AA teams in those days.
In 1983, we played just two non-conference games, Washington and Washington State so we could play every team in the Big Ten. But it was just Michigan and a couple other schools that did this. I'm not sure why that was allowed.

It's another reason I hate the additions of Maryland and especially Rutgers to the conference.

Actually they did. The only time ESPN Classic was generous to Michigan fans was during OSU week. They showed the wins over them from 1969, 1977, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1996, and of course 1997.
But the other 358 days a year, they showed 1 Michigan win for every 5 gut wrenching losses. Literally, I added them up. The crazy thing about that channel was how UM heavy it was when it came to showing college football classics. It was roughly 75% Michigan and 25% the rest of college football.
Around 2001, I emailed Classic at their official site a three page list of Notre Dame and OSU losses that I thought would be perfect for viewers to relive but I never got a response. But it wasn't long before that station fizzled out anyway.

|9 weeks 6 hours ago||Unfortunately, Fall weddings||
Unfortunately, Fall weddings are very popular now. If you're a Michigan fan and must get married this time of year, the LEAST you can do is get married during the bye week. But they rarely do.
I had weddings on back-to-back Saturdays during the 07 season. Both were for friends I had known since pre-school. I had to go. At that time, we were 2 games removed from "the horror," we were 0-2 and Henne was out for a couple weeks with a leg injury. Normally I'd be jacked for Notre Dame but we were in such an awful place, I was afraid to know what was going on. As soon as the wedding was done, I walked out to the parking lot, took a deep breath and then called my dad for a score update. He told me it was halftime and Michigan was up 31-0. Biggest relief EVER.
The following week against Penn State, I took a tiny battery operated hand held TV with me to the church and hid it in my pocket but the game didn't actually start until the wedding was finished and there was a 2 hour wait between the wedding and reception. We made it to the reception during the 3rd quarter with Michigan up 14-9. We all walked into the dining hall and they started the blessing as the last minute ticked off the clock. Everyone had their heads bowed, I had my head bowed trying to hide the little muted TV under the table cloth. The blessing and game ended simultaneously. Everyone said "Amen!" I said, "Amen!" for a different reason. But nobody else needed to know that.

I was a mess the day Bo died, as everyone else was. But there were two moments that day that stood out above the rest.
The local news went to the hospital Bo was in and Jim Brandstatter, John Wangler and Jamie Morris were already there looking in complete shock. When they interviewed the three men, Jamie Morris was practically sobbing. Seeing Morris, who is such a funny guy, like that made me lose it.
Then later in the afternoon on WTKA, they relived a touching Bo moment from a few months earlier. Tom Slade (1971 Michigan quarterback) had been battling leukemia. After a particularly painful day in the hospital, Slade woke up in his hospital bed to see Bo by his side sitting in a chair against the wall. They looked at each other but said nothing. Then Salde went back to sleep. Five hours later, he awoke to see Bo still sitting in that same chair. Once again I lost it BIG time. The two men ended up dying 8 days apart.
And now I've seriously depressed myself. Somebody needs to post something funny now.

I'm not going to get angry over us not being ranked. We came off a crap season which ended with us looking like crap against a crap team in a crap bowl game. And preseason rankings don't mean anything. However, that's not going to keep me from casting judgment on the other teams. So here goes.
1. USC at #15 sounds a little too generous.
2. Did Missouri graduate half their team from last year? 24th sounds awfully low to start after the year they had last season.
3. Notre Dame at #17 also sounds generous even before the academic fraud thing broke. Does the return of Everitt Gholston mean THAT much? Also, FUCK Notre Dame.
4. Alabama at #2 despite losing AJ McCaron just depresses me but it doesn't surprise me when Saban can buy pretty much any player he wants.
5. Six PAC 12 teams in the top 25? Did that conference get good while I wasn't looking?
6. I guess I can't argue the Bucks being in the top ten but 5/6 does sound generous after the defensive woes they had last year. 9/10 sounds more deserving.

You have a classic, historical look that you DON'T mess with. Even if it's just one game. Every other team in America, they can do this alternate jersey crap but these schools? No."

Half of Purdue's points were thanks to 2 fumbles by A-Train deep in our own territory that they turned into field goals. Brees played OK. Boiler receivers dropped a ton of passes.

I wasn't at 95 Purdue but I have the full game in my collection. The ESPN camera shows a full view of the stadium and there is definitely 100,000 at kickoff. But the 2nd quarter is a completely different story. People made it because the morning started out warmer but the weather took a nosedive really quickly. I don't think the fans expected it to get that bad so fast and they, understandably weren't going to stick around. By the start of the second quarter, there were at least 30,000 that had already left.
I know Michigan's attendance numbers have been suspect at times but I don't think 95 Purdue should count. They showed up and they were on time. They just left really early. Now the 2011 Purdue and Minnesota games I went to with the almost empty student sections is a different story. I didn't believe those numbers when they were announced.

WIDE RECEIVERS - Perfect. Those 4 were truly the best. There's no way to argue with those picks.
QUARTERBACKS - This is where it could get messy. Leach and Harbaugh belong on there, no questions asked. Brady is given bonus points because of the NFL career (which really shouldn't count) but I'd take the 99 version of him being the comeback king. As far as college career goes, I would take Elvis Grbac over Brady. We played brutally tough schedules in his day - Notre Dame was an elite program at the time, Florida State, Boston College, Washington teams in the Rose Bowl led by QB Mark Brunell, plus we won big ten titles every year he was here and we never lost to Ohio State.
I think I like Chad Henne being on there with Denard just off the list. Please don't shoot me. Denard was likable, electric, and ran for an insane amount of yards. But the 40 interceptions keeps him down. I was scared to death every time he passed the ball.
If Drew Henson came back in 2001 and continued doing the kind of stuff he did the previous year, I would have to put him on there. I still maintain that he's the most all around talented QB we have had in my lifetime.
RUNNING BACKS: Wasn't alive to see Lytle and Johnson but their stats speak for themselves. Wheatley had to be on there. With the record, I have no problem with Hart being on there but I think Jamie Morris had some qualities that were more pleasing to watch. He was about the same size as Hart but with more speed. Whenever he got tackled, he almost always seemed to fall forward and get a couple extra yards. He ran the "long ball" more often while Hart had a ton of 10-15 yard runs through his career. They all added up in the end but Jamie's style was more fun to watch.

2005 Penn State was pretty sweet as well. I was back in the north end zone but the game winning play was on the other side. I could not see the ball after it left Henne's hands. I had to watch the crowd reaction to know we won. It was pure madness.
After the game, my dad and I were walking down Hoover and we passed a frat house. A guy was on the balcony with a bullhorn telling people that Joe Paterno was dead.

Memories of being at Braylonfest 2004.
*The game was a 4:30 kickoff. At the time, that was the latest start ever for a Michigan home game and I felt kind honored to be (what I thought would be) the closest thing to a night game the big house would ever see.
*Walking to the stadium, I made note of how windy it was and it immediately made me nervous for the kicking game. Sure enough, the wind never stopped and the stadium was dead silent for almost every PAT and field goal attempt.
*MSU was a horrible team but played waaaaaay beyond what was expected of them. I sat in the south end zone so I had to listen to MSU's band play that damn fight song so many times, I thought I was going to lose my mind.
*All the drama happened in the OPPOSITE end zone. Only a Mike Hart TD was scored in front of us in the 1st quarter.
*Lloyd was always extra stubborn when it came to the running game. The fans everywhere were screaming all day to throw the damn ball.
*I lost all hope once we were down 27-10. I didn't leave early. I just sat in my seat like a zombie. I debated ripping my ticket stub. Thank GOD I didn't. MSU fans started taunting us.
*Tim Massaquoi's 2 point conversion catch I couldn't see. I had to watch the crowd's reaction to know whether he caught it.
*I tried to scream in the overtimes whenever MSU was on offense but I was so nervous, I could barely make a sound. I sounded kind of like Peter Brady on that episode of the Brady Bunch where his voice changed.
*After MSU's last offensive attempt and the game was over, I could finally scream again. Then I turned around and hugged some random dude sitting behind me. He probably thought I was a nut but he was so happy he hugged me back. Then while the rest of the stadium was going nuts, I had to sit down because I felt like I was going to pass out.

Sounds kind of like my trip there when I watched them play Western in 1998 (Antwan Randle-El's debut).
Saw Assembly Hall. The fans were very nice. It was easy to get in and out of the stadium parking lot. Really the only annoying thing was listening to their marching band announcer. He is no Carl Grapentine. His blowhard voice is like thousands of nails on a chalkboard. IU brought their band to the big house last year and I was displeased to hear that awful voice again after 14 years.

I think the majority of us who have followed the modern history of this rivalry are well aware that the outcome of this game has had little to do with the success (or lack of success) on the rest of the season. But we still obviously want to win it because...you know, FUCK Notre Dame.
As for your other points, I don't doubt that this rivalry has put together so many fantastic finishes the last 35 years. And yes, we probably SHOULD play every year. But that doen't mean I want us to anymore.
This goes beyond our painful memories with them like the ref in South Bend using an index card to see if Michigan got a first down or Carlyle Holiday leaving the ball behind on the 2 yard line and getting rewarded a touchdown.
It's the endless undeserved hype. The underserved NBC TV contract that continues to get renewed despite the fact that they are 24th in winning percentage since they got it. And then my personal breaking point came when after decades and decades of dodging conference invites, they figured out that they MUST be in one in this day and age but still make their own terms by saying they want to be a part time member. And then the ACC sacrifices their balls and agrees to it. That's not how it should be. You're either a full fledged conference member or you're not. I had always been annoyed at the special treatment ND got but once this "membership" happened with the ACC, I was done. When we stop playing them after this season, I will have a much easier time trying to stop getting mad over all the shit they get away with.

While technically true of those 3 games, only the Penn State game was a disaster for the defense. At least they showed up in the other 2.
The non-existent offense did us in against Iowa. And one of the (many) low points in the season for me was seeing our weak ass offense make Nebraska's 116th ranked defense look like world beaters.
The defense was painfully bad against Akron, Penn State, Indiana, OSU and Kansas State. Many times almost Gerg like with giving up big play after big play through shocking futility. I think we were so busy pulling our hair out over the offensive line that we overlooked how often the defense could not get the job done. We beat OSU and don't even have to settle for the 2 point conversion attempt if they just play a D+ to C- game. And giving up over 500 yards to Indiana is just wrong, wrong, wrong.

I was at the Horror. My seat was in row B (technically the 2nd row) of the north end zone....right where the field goal was blocked on the last play.
I understand all the complaints and arguments for scheduling this opponent again. And I know beating them 100-0 won't change history. But speaking as someone who basically had front row seats to witness this insanely painful moment in sports history, I still want to see us pound those guys into the ground. And if we don't win by AT LEAST 50 points, I think I will lose my mind.
