Really hard to get excited for this game after what happened Tuesday. Not that I was feeling too great after those underwhelming performances against lowly Rutgers and Minnesota either.
Friends and family are taking me out for my birthday dinner after the game. It would be nice to celebrate a win but I don't have a ton of confidence.

2004 against Wisconsin. The Boilers were undefeated, ranked in the top ten.
At the end of that game, Kyle Orton handed Wisconsin the game losing a fumble which the Badgers picked up and ran 40 yards into the end zone for the winning score 20-17.
The following Saturday, Michigan came to town and unleashed the Ernest Shazor hit.

In the 90's, when Michigan played Neuheisel's Colorado teams, I remember Gameday doing features on him as the cool young coach who played guitar with his players. Then he went to Washington and got a Pete Carroll type reputation..."Come play for me and I'll give you a car." That earned him the nickname 'Slick Rick,' and I ripped on him plenty of times.

There are sooooooo many moments I could list. I grew up watching us beat the Buckeyes every year (sigh). I've been to 3 of the 4 overtime wins at the big house which included Braylonfest. I was at the game where Manningham caught the TD on the final play against Penn State. The 98 Rose Bowl goes without saying.
But I don't think I've ever felt as insanely happy as I felt after the wins against Penn State in 1997 (Judgment Day) and Notre Dame in 2006. I was too happy to sleep those nights. I could not stop smiling for days. I was so damn happy, there was nothing that was going to kill my mood.
On a sidenote: Beano Cook, who had a 30 year history of public orgasms for Penn State football, made the famous quote in regards to Judgment Day: "Michigan won't even make it a game. They don't stand a chance. Send the band, have them play the 'Victors' so both sides can go home happy."
Well, Beano. We wanted to send the marching band but PSU said, "no." But our fans still went home happy.

It was 2004 that we overtook them for highest winning %. We had the opportunity to do it in a head to head game (which would have been awesome) but we ended up losing to a shitty Irish squad in South Bend 28-20. After that game, we kept winning and they kept losing and we got the record within a couple weeks anyway. It was listed on the scoreboard as part of the program's historical accomplishments at Braylonfest, which I was at.
I was disappointed at how well Notre Dame's season went this year, especially after they lost their QB in game two. I figured they would have their usual second half season slump and finish with 5 or 6 losses as usual. If they can stay this relevant (which I never hope for) then I have the feeling the winning % record will be something we continue to trade back and forth.

In 1995, #1 Nebraska beat #2 Florida 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl.

Illinois ended up going to the Rose Bowl by default because OSU went to the national title game. I think they were barely ranked in the top 25. But ironically, they beat OSU in Columbus.
|5 weeks 15 hours ago||Oklahoma State being selected||
Oklahoma State being selected for the Sugar Bowl was very surprising. Yes, they started the season 10-0 but it was against a horrible non-conference slate and close calls against bad and mediocre teams (30-27 over Texas, 35-31 over Iowa State, 36-34 over Kansas State.)
Their final two games, which were at home, were against much better competition, and they lost badly 45-35 to Baylor and 58-23 to Oklahoma.
That resume doesn't seem deserving of a Sugar Bowl invite, especially since their losses were at the END of season, not the beginning. But that's just me.

We lost 17-15 but we win if John Wangler isn't knocked out of the game.
|5 weeks 18 hours ago||One thing that jumped out at||
One thing that jumped out at me the most (other than the team playing FAR better than I anticipated) was the level of intensity.
I have awful memories of Michigan going up a couple scores in a game and then Lloyd taking his foot off the gas, playing extra conservative and letting opponents back in the game. Those games STILL haunt me to this day.
But Harbaugh did NONE of that. When we went up 24-7, I simply could not believe how often we were attempting to throw. As a Michigan fan, this is the point of the game where you expect us to go all Mike DeBord and just do a bunch of handoffs up the middle. Harbaugh made sure we put the nail in the coffin early...assuring Florida did not have a prayer of any sort of a comeback.
|5 weeks 18 hours ago||The complaining in the first||
The complaining in the first half was justified. Florida converted 6 of 8 on third down conversions. They got separation from the Michigan secondary a few times. Two bombs were thrown perfectly and they were still dropped. They had three good drives but came away with only 7 points because of a failed fake FG attempt and a mind blowingly dumb end zone interception pass by Florida's QB. They also had a chance at a hail mary to end the half because our D gave up a 3rd & 18...on a running play!
I felt VERY fortunate for us to be up 17-7 at the half. But the second half? That was pure domination. It was porn. They really got their act together the second half of the game.

When Harbaugh left for the NFL, I expected Stanford to go back to sucking. But they have remained a very impressive program. Since 2010, they have been to 3 Rose Bowls, 1 Fiesta Bowl and 1 Orange Bowl. That is just insane.

The Rose Bowl GODS have hated Michigan since the 1970's (phantom TD, phantom holding call, QB getting knocked out of the game, upsets as double digit favorites, our head coach having a heart attack the night before the game and other crap I'm sure I'm forgetting.)
These same GODS seem to hate Iowa. So far, this looks kind of like whenever Hayden Fry would take Iowa to the Rose Bowl. They were blown out before the 1st quarter had even finished.

I cannot stress enough how thrilling it was to see the defense do what they did today, despite a very frustrating first half.
If you look back at our bowl appearences over the last 20 years, we've either won shootouts or been blown out in all but 2 bowls. The defense has not had a performance like this since the 94 Hall of Fame Bowl against NC State, which Todd Collins/Tyrone Wheatley/Derrick Alexander won 42-7.
That was pretty amazing what they did out there today. I'm sooooo happy.

Except they don't. They play Temptation, Let's GO BLUE, Blues Brothers, the Darth Vader theme, R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and countless drum cheers. The Victors, for the most part, is played after scores, as they should be.
OSU plays their damn fight song for 5 yard gains, 2 yard gains, sacks and 1st downs in addition to scores. And FSU plays Braves chant, braves chant, braves chant. I'm surprised they don't scrap their fight song and play MORE Braves chant for touchdowns.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||The Michigan Marching Band||
The Michigan Marching Band does stand tunes right. They have several different ones for different situations in regards to what's going on in the game.
Florida State's Marching Band, on the other hand, plays that damn Braves tune for almost every single play regardless if it's a good or bad play. They're just like USC with that horrid conquest tune...which PAC 12 rivals added lyrics to a few years back.... "This is the only song we know...the only song we know...the only song we know!"
Give the fans in the stands some variety.

I only got to see Woodson play in person once, the 1997 Homecoming game against Minnesota. And his long reverse TD was scored in the opposite end zone of where I was sitting.
One big memory from that game (other than the students chanting, "bring on Penn State!" since Judgment Day was the following week) was hearing the fans in my section say, "There's Woodson! There's Woodson!" every time he ran on the field.
Those were good times.

Herrman's bend AND break defense.
When Carr mentioned in the offseason that year we would be getting a new defensive coordinator for 2006, I celebrated about as hard as I did over Dave Brandon resigning.
I'm pretty sure the football GODS laughed their asses off at me at this exact moment over what would eventually happen.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Wow. Ellerbe was only here||
Wow. Ellerbe was only here from 97-01? That felt like so much longer.
He was interim coach that first year that immediately followed Fisher's firing and the team went 25-8. They had wins over #1 Duke, Syracuse, MSU (bringing Izzo's record against Michigan to 0-5) and one of my personal favorites: a 112-64 win over Bobby Knight's Indiana team at Crisler which was the most points an IU team had given up in a game in their entire history. Then the team went out and won the first ever Big Ten tournament. They lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament to a so/so UCLA team. But the success of that season overall had the school drop the interim label for Ellerbe.
Then...the sanctions. And everything went to hell very quickly. Like the football program's transition from 07 to 08, the basketball program became an immediate dumpster fire before you could blink twice. During these years, I became kind of hooked on college basketball as a whole. It was never as epic as football but I got hooked on watching other teams, the tournament, doing the brackets, etc. It was exciting to watch and all I kept thinking was...damn. How much greater would this all be if my own damn team was a part of all this?
