Another common thing with OSU under Meyer is luck. 99% of the time, the bounces always go their way. And how many times have we seen Braxton thrown what should be a pick six to a wide open defender only to see him drop it? And then Miller will throw A TD on the next play.
That's the kind of crap I expect to see whenever OSU plays.

My 6 year old niece decided over the summer that she loves MSU and she's still rooting for them hardcore. She asked me if I was going to root for them this weekend. I said, "no.". Her eyes then got really wide and she asked me if I was rooting for OSU. I said, "no." I will never root for either team.
I'm thinking of not even watching. Maybe I'll tune in at the very end just to see who wins.
My passion for Michigan football will never change. But my passion for college football in general has taken a downward spiral the last few years. All the programs I despise most keep having major success and all the cheating programs keep getting wrist slaps from the NCAA.
I just don't have much motivation to watch a matchup between one rival coached by a slimeball and another rival coached by an asshole.

|1 week 20 hours ago||I predicted our offense would||
I predicted our offense would stay dead. My final score prediction was OSU 38, Michigan 6. So Devin and the offense obviously gave me some hope. Very proud of them. It was annoying as hell that Borges waited until the 12th game of the season to try some different things but that's not exactly surprising either.
The truly sad part is even if we had scored on that 2-point conversion, I could still picture OSU marching straight down the field, just like they had all day, in the 30 seconds they would have had left to kick the field goal to win it. Braxton is dangerous, but the D made it too easy for him. He barely had to try on two of his touchdown runs. Just take two steps to the left, and he's walking into the end zone untouched.
The defense was the biggest and most shocking disappointment this year. They made Akron look like world beaters, they made 18 year old Christian Hackenburgh look like Tom Brady, they made Indiana's offense look like Pete Carrol's USC teams, they didn't have a prayer against OSU. It was just really heartbreaking all year long. Defense was supposed to be the strength of this team. We knew going into the season that the O-line was going to be a major issue.
I love Michigan. I will always root for them no matter what stroke inducing thing they do to me. But it was really depressing watching how much they regressed throughout the season and then to finish their final season game like...that. I hated the fact that I wanted football season to be over in mid-October....which is something I always said when RichRod was here. I just hate this feeling.
GO BLUE always.

Oct. 5th against OSU: A fumbled snap on 4th and 1 with a bad spot from the refs kills their last drive to tie the game. Lost 40-30.
Oct. 12th against Wisconsin: Dead from the start. Lifeless. Lost 35-6.
Oct. 19th against Minnesota: Two fourth quarter turnovers blow their lead which the Gophers turn into 14 points to pull out the win. Lost 20-17
Oct. 26th against Iowa: A fourth quarter comeback is cut short and they come up with no points in overtime. Lost 17-10
Nov. 2nd against Nebraska: A 3 point lead with just 6 seconds left. Nebraska's third string QB comes in and completes a miracle hail mary. Lost 27-24.
Nov. 16th against Michigan: 93 dropped interceptions, a regained fumble in OT by UM, a miracle field goal kicked in regulation with 1 second left, Al Borges, Al Borges, Al Borges, Al Borges. Lose 27-19.
That's a whole lot of suck. And bad luck.

I'm thankful that Northwestern is Northwestern.
All season long, I've complained that our opponents never seem to have bounces and bad luck go against them. For the most part, it never happens. And then tonight happened. 6 sure interceptions dropped, 3 of which would have been pick sixes, the last one would have wrapped the game up. A Funches fumble that would have ended the game that he somehow recovered. Two converted 4th downs in the final minute when we hadn't converted a 3rd down all evening. And a bizarre 1st down for NU that got reviewed and ended up being a yard short.
Again. Thank you, Northwestern. I'm happy and relieved for a win but I'm sure I'll be pulling my hair out again next week.

|5 weeks 5 days ago||That was 1997, the same day||
That was 1997, the same day we had our Judgment Day game with Penn State.
That was one of many epic losses when Saban was coaching them. Just a few weeks earlier, they lost to a bad Northwestern team in Evanston when NU blocked their game winning field goal in the final seconds. The Michigan game was the following week and Gary Barnett later said he could tell right away the MSU players were thinking about nothing but Michigan, and it came back to bite them,
The following year, Saban took an unranked and not very talented team into Columbus and beat the Bucks who were ranked #1. The next week, they lost at home to Purdue 26-25 in the final minute and didn't even make a bowl game.
I remember watching MSU's season opener that year and they were down to Colorado State by a touchdown in the 4th quarter when Saban pulled his QB who had been struggling most of the day, and put in freshman Ryan Van Dyke. It was a disaster and they ended up losing. I kind of thought that was a dick move my Saban putting the freshman QB in with just 2 minutes left in the game, having all the pressure be on him to win. When Van Dyke couldn't get it done, he was literally crying on the sideline.
I was 11 and 12 when MSU lost those back to back games to Central in the early 90s. Unfortunately, I have no memories of them.

That 1992 MSU game was pretty interesting to watch. We led 28-3 at halftime. The second half was low scoring with both teams getting a touchdown. But the MSU players were taking lots of cheap shots, which wasn't uncommon as MSU always played dirty out of frustration when the game was out of reach.
The student section was REALLY letting MSU have it in the second half as players were getting bombarded with marshmallows in the north endzone, which really seemed to annoy the commentators. I saw a good chunk of their game against Indiana and again, their defense played awful. And IU was shockingly efficient on offense.
Hackenburg is inconsistent. Not surprising since he is a freshman, but he does have his moments. You just get that feeling he'll play much better with a home night crowd. Once again, I see a meh team playing good against Michigan and then going back to sucking the following week.

The call that screwed Iowa State was pretty pathetic, though. Over the last several years, Texas has reached Notre Dame level in getting gift calls from the officials. It even happens to them during a down year.

The Little Brown Jug has a history that's epic, not only for the reason it was bought but because it was part of an actual Michigan/Minnesota game 110 years ago.
And so began the rest of the college football world inventing trophies that really have nothing to do with their history. You grab the first animal, appliance or fairy tale character that comes to mind, put it on top of a plaque, and then tell two random schools to play for it every years.
ETA: Never knew Notre Dame and Stanford played for a punch bowl.

1997, the only time I saw the national championship team in person. It was homecoming. A noon start ( students showed up for noon games back then) it was dark and cloudy but the rain held off. Watched the marching band play a few songs for the alumni who were enjoying a pancake breakfast.
Had nose bleed seats about 70 rows up in the north end zone. Woodson scored a long TD on a reverse to start the second quarter. Defense played great as usual. Game ended 24-3. In the final minute, the student section started chanting, "bring on Penn State!!" As you all know, the following week was Judgment Day in Happy Valley.
The rain didn't start until the car ride home, as I was listening to the radio while Sparty was getting pounded by Ohio.
I saw two more Minnesota games in person at the big house in 2007 and 2011. Once again, the weather was dark and gloomy.

Wow. How has it been ten years?
I do remember the weirdness of watching the team play on a Friday night because of the Twins game the following day. Minnesota originally asked us if we would reschedule the game to Thursday but Bill Martin said, "no."
As negative as I can be when we're down in a game, I didn't give up hope despite how bad that game started. I knew we would come back. But I felt the same way as the media and the fans about the inconsistency of how this team was playing. One fan at the game held this up...
Besides being a huge comeback, this game was special to me because it got the team back on track and they played A+ football for the last 7 weeks of the season, including that win over Tressel in November. Unfortunately the final game was in the Rose Bowl against another one of Pete Carrol's pay for play squads, but that season was pretty sweet.
And a random fact about the day of the Minnesota game that I remember for some reason, I bought the 3rd season of the Simpsons on DVD since it was released that morning. Football and the Simpsons. It was a good day.

Illinois can't afford to be choosy but hiring Ron Zook was always a bizarre move, I thought. He couldn't win at Florida with all the players Steve Spurrier left behind. What made Illinois think he was going to do great things in Champaign?
Not that I didn't love watching him win in Columbus in 2007, but otherwise, nothing to brag about.

He was referring to 3:30 games in November. After the 1988 Minnesota game, which was a 3:30 start in November that was frigid cold and ended under a close to night sky, Bo remarked in his post-game press conference that Michigan would never again have a 3:30 home game in November. Since he was athletic director at that time, maybe he had the power to do that, I'm not sure. But I don't think athletic directors have that power today. So it may be moot.
I hope all home games are 3:30 starts now because we won't have a student section otherwise.

The 2000 Northwestern game, which still haunts me, was the most memorable heartbreaking game coming off a bye week. I remember the natives wanting to strangle Jim Herrman for the defense playing that bad with an extra week to prepare.
It isn't coming off a bye week where we have struggled for the most part. It's going INTO the bye week where we suck. 2005 was the last time we had a win going into our week off.
2012: Lost to Notre Dame 13-6
2011: Lost to MSU 28-14
2010: Lost to Iowa 38-28
2009: No bye week
2008: Lost to Notre Dame 35-17
2007: No bye week

These teams being Akron and UConn, you should be able to run on them with relative ease. So why not run on first down the majority of the time? Against better opponents, yes, you're going to mix it up more.
We'd still be complaining about the line after these last two games but we wouldn't have had to experience the scare of our lives both times if not for the turnovers. Devin stops that, and we're breathing much easier.

|10 weeks 5 days ago||In regards to football, I||
In regards to football, I know the athletic department has been a mess lately and I sympathize with the raising of ticket prices. But some of those points brought up are pure crap.
1. In regards to last year's Northwestern game, don't tell me that going to the game on time was going to prevent you from a lifetime of memories and meeting new friends. Do you not realize how stupid that sounds? You're on campus 8 months of the year. You can get memories and new friends the other 234 days you're around each other.
2. I know this sounds shocking, but you can also tailgate AFTER the game. That's what all the alumni do. Is there some rule against getting wasted at 3:30 p.m.?
3. You can recite the crumby non-conference schedules of the last several years all you want. The opponent is not worth your money. But 2 years ago, I was at the Minnesota and Purdue games, both of which had half empty student sections. Maybe those squads weren't ranked in the top ten BUT they were B1G games. And we were in title contention in our division when those games were played, right up until we got screwed by two horrible calls in Iowa City. So let's not make it seem like this is a non-conference problem. It seems if it's not a rival, you're not interested. And not even a ranked opponent, like Nebraska was in 2011, was good enough for you to get there on time because of the noon start. That's just sad.
Dave Brandon has done a ton of things that have pissed me off. But the students have done the same and many of their arguments, even after the questionable moves by the athletic department, are pretty damn weak.
|10 weeks 6 days ago||Time to get back to reality||
Time to get back to reality here. Even if UConn were 2-0, the marching band was not going to travel to East Hartford to a barely 40,000 crowd stadium. And we didn't know until 6 days before the game that it was going to be a night game on ABC, so you really need to let this go.
Rivarly games are always automatic road trips for the band and I like it that way. I want them in South Bend, East Lansing and Columbus. (That's the way Bo wanted it too.)
But for those who want to see the band in some different games, you're eventually going to get your wish. With Notre Dame going off the schedule after next year and the MSU game now moved to being away the same year as the OSU game, we're going to have no rivalry opponents to travel to during odd numbered years starting in 2015. That leaves 1-2 brand new teams to travel to from now on. My guess is Penn State will be the new traditional opponent the band travels to during odd years.
The band traveled to Happy Valley for the 1999 game, was originally scheduled to go again in 2001 but some scheduling conflict arose and they sent a pep band (in full uniform) instead.
They also tried to go to Beaver Stadium for the HUGE Judgment Day game in 1997 but PSU said, "no."

This all goes back to the dedication game for the new luxury boxes in 2010. Truth be told, I would have rather played UConn instead of a MAC school for that game. If it meant a return trip to Connecticut, so be it.
However, that game was scheduled at the very last minute, when it should have been scheduled in 2008. We knew when the renovations would be done. I guess the futility under RichRod became the bigger issue and this scheduling conflict got put on the back burner.

As I recall, OSU came into that game losing 3 of their first 5 games, and this was the first time they started Braxton Miller. Nebraska was able to make that comeback in large part thanks to Miller not being able to play the second half.

|11 weeks 5 days ago||In their last 5 games,||
In their last 5 games, Nebraska's defense has given up 70, 45, 34, 13 and 41 points.
During their first 2 seasons in the B1G, their defense has failed them against every top conference team they have played. 48 points to Wisconsin, 45 points to Michigan, 63 points to Ohio State, 70 points to Wisconsin in the B1G title game, along with non conference losses 36 and 41 points to UCLA, 45 to Georgia, 30 to South Carolina, even 38 points against a 6 loss Washington team.
Defensive problems have been a huge issue for them for a while. I was amazed at how much Wyoming blew them out for 600 yards two weeks ago. It was so RichRod/GERG like, it was scary. At one point, Wyoming put a drive together, ended up missing a field goal, and the Husker coaches and players were celebrating like they had just won the national championship because they finally got a stop. There was still a second half of football to be played.
Not that I feel sorry for them, though. Especially after the refs gift wrapped the division title for them last year.

I wonder if the game had gone differently, somewhat, had Gardner not lost that fumble in the 2nd quarter (before his 2 interceptions.) We had a nice drive going all the way to the Akron 10 when Gardner looked like he was going to do an option pitch, held on to the ball with one hand even as two Akron defenders jumped on top of him. If we score there, it's 14-3 shortly before the half and the Zips don't get 2 field goal attempts.
Still....the defense. I have no explanation for them today.
