At press time, Harbaugh had sent Michigan’s athletic department an envelope containing a heavily annotated seating chart, a list of the 63,000 seat views he had found unsatisfactory, and a glowing 70-page report on section 25, row 12, seat 9, which he claimed is “exactly what the great sport of football is all about.”

I'm still blown away that the conference would even allow such a thing to happen in the first place, Dave Brandon or no Dave Brandon. In the last 40 years, no B1G team has had to travel to a rival's stadium two years in a row. That's unheard of in the modern era.
Granted, because of the number of teams in conference, there have been instances where there have been two straight (non-rival) meetings at one stadium but it was always evened out. For instance, we played Minnesota at the Metrodome in 2002 and 2003 and we played them at the big house in 2004 and 2005. In the 80's, we did a similar pattern when we played Iowa. Why the crap is there no effort to even out this thing with Sparty?

According to wikipedia, yes, that's how it was introduced to the rest of the world...
University of Michigan
In the early fall of 1983, the Michigan Wolverines played the Huskies in Seattle and brought the wave back to Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. A letter to the sports editor of The New York Times claimed, "There are three reasons why the wave caught on at Michigan Wolverine games: It gave the fans something to do when the team was leading its opponent by 40 points, it was thrilling and exciting to see 105,000 people in the stands moving and cheering, and Bo Schembechler asked us not to do it." The fans responded to his request by doing more waves, including "Silent Waves" (standing and waving arms without cheering), "Shsh Waves" (replacing the cheering with a "shshing" sound), the "Fast Wave," the "Slow Wave," and two simultaneous waves traveling in opposite directions. The following spring, fans who had enjoyed the wave in Ann Arbor introduced it to the nearby Tiger Stadium in Detroit. The Tigers won the World Series that year and appeared on many televised games throughout 1984, so people all over America saw it.

Of the 5 touchdowns the defense gave up during the regular season, 2 of them were set up because of Jamie Morris fumbles. One fumble was against OSU as Ace pointed out inside our own 10. The other was against Indiana when we were pinned at our own 2. Morris lost the fumble, Indiana recovered it on the 1 and punched it in for the score on the next play.
The TV angle for the Harbaugh to Kolesar bomb was stupid. The clip I used for the highlight video above is from the video 'The Schembechler Years," which I dubbed Musberger's call to so you can actually see Kolesar when he's off to the races.
It's kind of annoying that here we are 30 years later and ESPN and ABC still do this with college football games, where every so often they'll show a play from an obscure angle, whether it's behind the QB, from the sideline or in the case of the 2005 UM/MSU game, shots from the aerial blimp.

Some notes about those 3 Big Ten losses.
MSU - 7 turnovers was horrible. If it were 6 turnovers, we probably would have won. At the end of the game, we were driving, down 6, and Greg McMurtry was absolutely wide open in the end zone. All Demetrious had to do was look his way and we win that game by 1. Instead, he threw pick #7.
INDIANA - Believe it or not, we were underdogs in this one. We were ranked 20th, IU was ranked 15th. Still, we had a 10-7 lead in the 4th quarter but the Hoosiers blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for the game winning score.
OSU - The Bucks were not good and we were huge favorites. Earl Bruce had already been fired the week before the game. OSU players wore headbands in honor of him, had much more to play for. We lose by 3. A couple weeks later, Bo had his second heart attack.
It was a time where 8-4 was considered bottom of the barrel but that team had key components they needed to replace. Despite this, they had chances to win in every one of their conference losses and couldn't pull them out. The next season, they started a string of 5 straight Big Ten titles.

It is bizarre how that worked out for Bo, Mo, Lloyd and Hoke. (I'm not including RichRod because we couldn't beat anybody in 2008.)
But to be fair, Moeller and Carr got screwed in their first games against MSU.
With Moeller, we had Desmond getting mugged on the two point conversion, the officials apologizing the next day for f*cking that up.
In Carr's first game against Sparty, MSU had the ball on their final drive trailing us by 4. They were forced to try and convert a 4th down to keep the drive alive. They threw a short pass to the sideline that was clearly caught a yard and half short of the marker but the ref decided to move the chains anyway. Screw job.
For Harbaugh's first season, we've got both rivalry games at home, which is something that hasn't happened since Bump Elliot was our coach. It kind of adds a whole new feel but I wish we could go back to the old format of having at least one at home and one on the road.

|4 weeks 1 day ago||I don't know if I like||
I don't know if I like scraping the division format to choose the teams for the confernce title game. If you go with the top two teams in the standings, you could still get a team that scraped their way to the top by avoiding top tier teams, which would happen more frequently now that there are 14 teams in the conference.
Example: Barry Alvarez's Wisconsin Rose Bowl teams had a tradition: Lose to Michigan and miss out on playing the other top tier B1G team (Ohio State once, Penn State the other two times). I wouldn't want to see a return to that, where a team gets rewarded for their scheduling breaks.
Also, Sparty missed out on playing OSU 15 times in the last 30 years. For some reason, they always seemed to rotate off the schedule more often than others. Now that they're in the same division, they don't have that luxury anymore and they have to play every year....which is how it should be.

1993 through 1996. Remember when those were considered the "hell years?". 8-4, 8-4, 9-4 and 8-4.
Coming off 5 straight Big Ten titles, the fans immediately wanted to skin Gary Moeller alive, especially when the injuries in practice started to mount up (Tyrone Wheatley, Walter Smith, Joe Marinaro) and then Lloyd felt the stress, despite starting out 2-0 against the Bucks, with stress eating and he started running the steps at the big house to get the weight off.
Those teams always seemed to lose in hair pulling style. The hail mary against Colorado, the Ricky Powers fumble handing the game to Illinois. They were never blown out. But they underachieved and things always seemed to go wrong at the worst time. Thankfully, those didn't seem to be an issue in the OSU game. And it didn't hurt that toolbags like Terry Glenn would release dumbass statements to fire the team up.

That popped up often when Michigan played on the road. Iowa in 1988, Wisconsin in 1986 and as recently as Penn State in 1993, were all issued warnings.
When we played in Columbus in 1990, the crowd was given the penalty and OSU lost a timeout as a result.
The big house crowd came close to getting the penalty during the 89 OSU game. The ABC cameras actually show the entire Michigan sideline desperately pleading with the fans to quite down so we won't get the penalty. It's probably one of the strangest things you'll ever see.

The wide open pass to Gallon still leaves me in shock. It was the strangest feeling in the world to go from complete despair to actual hope and excitement in just one play.
That feeling happened again the following season when Gardner threw that hail Mary to Roundtree against Northwestern, which happened right in my end zone. I can see myself in the slow-mo replay.
That was a great experience but I would have preferred to have been at UTL.

I didn't expect us to win this game. I don't think we knew the exact health of Henne and Hart going into the game but they could barely walk against OSU. Tebow had just won the Heisman and the media had already declared his status of being able to walk on water and cure cancer.
During previews for those day's games on ESPN, they showed a shot of the Michigan Marching Band marching to the stadium and a bunch of UF fans on the sidewalk rolling their eyes and sarcatically giving them the Gator chomp as if they were annoyed they were stuck playing us.
Then there was the shot of the Florida players taunting our guys in warmups and I said, "Fuck those guys. Now I really, REALLY want to win."
That was probably the only game in my lifetime where I went into thinking we had no shot and then afterwards, being greedy thinking we should have won by MORE than we actually did.

This uncertainty at wide receiver is a rare feeling. We've always been able to plug guy(s) in to have great years after losing major players. From David Terrell/Marcus Knight to Marquise Walker/Ron Bellomy to Braylon/ Breaston to Manningham/Arrington.
The only other time this seemed to happen was when RichRod came to town...but there were early departures because of the coaching change and as we would later find out, disaster at every position, not just receivers.
This is different. Darboh had a few nice moments at the spring game but nothing to give me a ton of confidence.

On top of that, the movie ended up being very meh. Zombies are NOT Olympic sprinters.

Unfortunately, since only a couple games were televised per-season in the 70's, I had so little footage to send him.
When he died, I wanted to make Lytle some sort of tribute video. All I really had to work with was an interview he did about being a Heisman candidate before the 76 Minnesota game (crappy picture quality and all) plus barely a minute of highlights.
Kelly told me they ended up playing the video at his funeral...

As exciting as that play was, it never should have come down to it. The game should have been over after the Leon Hall interception. I practically blew my vocal chords out on that play. But then the flag came out for celebration, and punting the ball when we should have got insurance points, yadda, yadda, yadda. Thank GOD for Manningham, Steve Breaston's kickoff return and Lloyd fighting to get that extra second back on the clock.

We also had to say goodbye to the block M on the 50 yard line for 12 years. Just a few games into the 1991 season, the paint had already almost completely faded and they didn't bother retouching it and did away with it the following year. Once the field turf was added in 2003, the block M at midfield made it's triumphant return. Although the students could no longer throw marshmallows.

I must be one of those rare people who have never experienced this at the big house.
About 95% of the games I have been to have been in the north end zone. Every section I was in was seated for the Ho-hum 2 yard runs or non-exciting plays. But if we were in scoring position in our end zone or on D in our end zone, everyone was always on their feet screaming as they should be. No confrontations, no "down in front!" just common sense.
There were obvious exceptions; 2005 Penn State (Manningham!) everyone stayed standing for the end of that 4th quarter. 2012 OT against Northwestern, nobody dared to sit down after Roundtree caught that bomb.
Only once have I ever turned around and signaled people to get on their feet which was 2004 Braylonfest when we were making our comeback...although that was the south end zone. It's kind of a different world on that side of the stadium with no students.

UMgoblue.com has a feature about the play. While the ball is in the air, Eddie Brown has grabbed Desmond's waist and then grabbed both his ankles as he falls to the turf. The flag should have been thrown before the ball even reached Desmond.
"I saw six-foot, five (inch) Elvis Grbac back there about to dump it in there for an easy two points and I'm thinking there's no way I can go back to East Lansing if I give up this play," Brown said. "So I tripped him and I tried to act like I tripped and fell."

A few side notes involving some of those night games:
*1972 UCLA - The Bruins QB was actor Mark Harmon (and son of our own Tom Harmon) who got knocked on his ass by the Michigan defense on the second series and had to leave the game with a head injury. UCLA had no answer for Schembechler's running game which racked up nearly 400 yards on the ground. Interviewed before the game, Tom Harmon apologized to Michigan fans and said he was rooting for his son. Michigan won 26-9.
*1986 WISCONSIN - The first ever night game at Camp Randall Stadium. Jim Harbaugh became the first ever Michigan QB to throw for 300 yards in a game.
*1982 NOTRE DAME - The first ever night game at Notre Dame Stadium. The results of the game we can forget, which was a 23-17 loss. Bo losing to Gerry Faust is criminal and embarrassing.
*1990 NOTRE DAME - When the jackass ref pulled out an index card to measure whether or not Michigan had a first down. Only in South Bend.
*1998 NORTHWESTERN - The game with the driving rainstorm, the entire field being nothing but mud and Justin Fargas being our running game.
*2003 MINNESOTA - 21 point 4th quarter comeback with Navarre, Braylon and Chris Perry. The 100th anniversary of the little brown jug.
A slight possible correction on 1989 UCLA. An epic win, yes. Vada Murray recovers the onside kick, JD Carlson kicks the game winner with 1 second left. I was only 9 so I don't remember the start time. But there was daylight when the game started. It might have been night time back in Michigan but not on the west coast.

Yes. Stanford got screwed by not being rewarded a touchdown that clearly crossed the plane.
Pittsburgh got triple screwed getting called for a phantom pass interference that gave ND a first and goal, Pitt missed a field goal in overtime that would have won it, an Irish defender was offsides on the kick but the ref refused to throw the flag and a ND player gave a punch to a Pitt player and not a single ref noticed it to throw the flag.
Two gifted victories by the refs in South Bend. That team had no business playing in the national title game and were predictably exposed.
|14 weeks 1 day ago||Boo. I think we'll be in||
I think we'll be in baby steps mode for a little while since we're so new to the night game fad. The rest of the teams in the B1G have at least 2 per season. Northwestern has around 4 per year. A couple years ago, Nebraska took their three biggest home games (Wisconsin, Michigan and Penn State) and made ALL of them night games.
While I am a traditionalist in that I think MSU and OSU should remain day games, I think it's a crime that we won't have a September night game at home. Just because Notre Dame is off the schedule doesn't mean we shouldn't have one either against BYU or Oregon State.
I have to imagine we're the only B1G team not playing a home night game against a non-conference foe.

Not the same, especially when you consider the number of games. Other than 1997, the only Michigan games Bob Griese broadcast where Brian was the starting QB was the 95 Penn State game (because Dreisbach was injured) and the second half of the 96 OSU game (also because Dreisbach was injured). And even in that game, he forgot his son was the QB when he said, "the OSU defenders better get after the QB.".
Plus, you know, he went to Purdue and only rooted for Michigan for a couple years in the mid-90's.
Herbie, on the other hand, has had more than a decade worth of broadcasting nearly every huge OSU game, including national title games, bowl games and the 1 vs 2 game in Columbus from 2006. I'm sorry. He's a good broadcaster but that annoys the hell out of me.

It's not so much laughing at the hire as it is being completely amazed at the hire. So amazed that it leaves you dumbstruck. And I watched the basketball game where Nebraska beat Sparty and the crowd went wild when it was pointed out that Riley was sitting in the seats.
These are his 12 seasons worth of records at Oregon State: 8-5, 7-5, 5-6, 10-4, 9-5, 9-4, 8-5, 5-7, 3-9, 8-4, 7-6 and 5-7.
Some other stats:
* A 58-63 record in conference games.
* A 3-9 record against biggest rival Oregon.
* Two home losses to I-AA teams: Sacremento State and Eastern Washington
* 21 losses to teams with losing records.
* Zero conference titles
* Most notable bowl games earned: A trip to the Alamo and two to the Las Vegas Bowl.
Whatever Nebraksa fans see in this guy, I'm not understanding the excitement. He's piled a record that is much worse than the two last coaches they fired and he has the exact same record as Brady Hoke's last three years (only with a worse defense).
Isn't it understandable that people would be a little freaked if a guy with this kind of resume would be hired to coach their team? He was hired before we got Harbaugh and I remember Michigan fans were scared to death because if THIS was the best Nebraska could get, who the hell were we going to get?
Thankfully, it worked out for us. But Riley to Nebraska is STILL a head scratcher.

So many to choose from. It would be hard to make a top ten list. But the obvious ones you have to throw in there are
97 Penn State (Judgment Day) - All of the factors heading into this game, if we went into it today I would be insanely nervous. But since I was only 17 at the time, I was more fearless. We took the opening kickoff and got a FG...however, all I kept thinking was how much I couldn't wait for the defense to get on the field and REALLY shut that crowd up. And it's like the football GODS were actually agreeing with me - sack, short run, sack, 3 and out. I will never forget that evening. It was amazing.
And the away uniforms looked like they're supposed to...
and 2006 Notre Dame:
The Irish sneak out a 14-10 win over a so-so Georgia Tech squad in their opener and suddenly, they're crowned eventual national champions by the media and ranked #2 in the land. Charlie Weiss' stupid ass talking about how we're not going to disrespect Michigan, Jerome Bettis' stupid ass saying, "and I....HATE MICHIGAN!"
That game was so epic, I could not stop smiling that entire week. Take a look at the replay of the fans sitting in the first few rows after Manningham's second touchdown. They look so devastated, it's pure porn like in my eyes.

I haven't heard anything about the alumni flag football game. Are they not doing that anymore? In 2009, I found that much more entertaining than the actual spring game itself.

These are the moments I remember most from past spring games....
*1998 - Fresh off the national title season so there were a ton of fans, cheerleaders, half the marching band. My first look at Tom Brady who threw a couple impressive bombs. This was in the days where fans got to go on the field afterwards, meet the players and ask for autographs...it was the perfect opportunity for fans to get their national championship memorabilia signed.
*2000 - Another beautiful day weather wise. Creative move by Lloyd to have the offense start down 17-0. Hensen, Terrell, A-Train, Walker and the best offensive line in the nation. But they fell short of a comeback. Hayden Epstein kicked a 60 yard field goal to end the day and got mobbed by the team.
*2002 - My main memory of this game was listening to the fans around me moan and groan every time Navarre came on field to run the offense. I felt bad for him.
*2004 - Parking lot at Crisler was full. I got a ticket for parking in a staff spot, gambling that it wouldn't matter on a weekend. I know. Stupid. Two players (I can't remember their names) sang the national anthem before the game and they actually had beautiful voices. But the mic system kept going in and out and they kept starting over until it went out for good and the team started annoyingly singing on the sidelines just to get the song over with. Braylon had just graduated and was waiting for the NFL draft. He walked around the stadium in a hot pink dress shirt.
*2005, 06, 07 - When my interest in the spring games started to dwindle. Half the team always seemed to be too injured to participate. They weren't in game format. Just different groups practicing different things around the field. Weather was always dark, cloudy, cold. I did think that Mister Simpson was going to be the next Wolverine legend.
*2009 - Decided to go back because of the new things under RichRod, a tour of the new locker rooms and the new alumni flag football game. Weather was FREEZING. The line to get into the locker rooms was over an hour wait so I didn't bother. The flag football game was a hoot. Players that were currently in the NFL were ordered not to play but that didn't stop Larry Foote, who made some amazing catches and did some showboating. The flag football game was the highlight of that day.
And I haven't been back since. But now that we have some Harbaugh, I plan on being there.

Very nice. First time in several years that I'm looking forward to the spring game.
Afterwards, I suspect my fellow wolverine fans will have the exact same reaction they have had after the last 15 spring games..."Oh my GOD, we suck!" But we'll comfort each other knowing we have an excellent new coaching staff in hand who will work their asses off changing the culture, attitude and development to make Michigan look like Michigan again. So bring it on!
See you on the 4th!

Maybe because Wisconsin was a total joke in football and basketball for a hundred years. Then the last 15 years or so, it seems they always put up these great seasons year after year and never need to rebuild.
I'd like to see them suck again.

Yes, it does suck. Kind of like when Notre Dame played Bama for the football title. Didn't want to root for the Tide but I'm sure as hell never going to root for ND.

This blows...seeing Notre Dame play so well.
And North Carolina/Wisconsin...hate both teams and want them both to lose. But at least it's a good game so far.

The old pressbox, while nostalgic, had really become an eye sore. It long needed to be replaced. The only sight lines no completely visible were on each side of it. The old boxes were very meh. And even more tired looking on the outside of the stadium...
But I loved that they kept the old Michigan Stadium letters and put them on the concourse entrance, once again leaving the S upside down...
The renovations really helps keep some of the sound in. And it still has a majestic look. So I love it. Honestly, would you rather have this...
or Penn State's erector set....

But as for the play itself, Mike Gillette's fake punt for a TD against MSU was much better. He had 4 Spartans charging at him to block it and the stupid ref was standing in his way so he had to knock him over.

I'm surprised how popular the stripes are with so many people. I thought the stripes up the sleeves were the dumbest thing about every "legacy" and "throwback" jersey under Brandon.
To me, the away uniform was at it's best in the late 90's when they brought the block M back on the sleeves.
Not that the Schembechler away jerseys weren't classic as Jamie Morris shows here...

The Tom Brady look. It's perfect.
I'll take the Desmond or the Harbaugh look too because they are so minor. But get rid of that stupid piping.
