While I agree that it's time to start winning at their stadiums again, I despise the new schedule quirk.
It was nice knowing that ANY season, we would have at least one rival at the big house. My entire life it's been that way. I would take that over having both OSU and MSU at home every other year.
It's another reason I hate the additions of Maryland and especially Rutgers to the conference.

Actually they did. The only time ESPN Classic was generous to Michigan fans was during OSU week. They showed the wins over them from 1969, 1977, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1996, and of course 1997.
But the other 358 days a year, they showed 1 Michigan win for every 5 gut wrenching losses. Literally, I added them up. The crazy thing about that channel was how UM heavy it was when it came to showing college football classics. It was roughly 75% Michigan and 25% the rest of college football.
Around 2001, I emailed Classic at their official site a three page list of Notre Dame and OSU losses that I thought would be perfect for viewers to relive but I never got a response. But it wasn't long before that station fizzled out anyway.

|2 days 22 hours ago||Unfortunately, Fall weddings||
Unfortunately, Fall weddings are very popular now. If you're a Michigan fan and must get married this time of year, the LEAST you can do is get married during the bye week. But they rarely do.
I had weddings on back-to-back Saturdays during the 07 season. Both were for friends I had known since pre-school. I had to go. At that time, we were 2 games removed from "the horror," we were 0-2 and Henne was out for a couple weeks with a leg injury. Normally I'd be jacked for Notre Dame but we were in such an awful place, I was afraid to know what was going on. As soon as the wedding was done, I walked out to the parking lot, took a deep breath and then called my dad for a score update. He told me it was halftime and Michigan was up 31-0. Biggest relief EVER.
The following week against Penn State, I took a tiny battery operated hand held TV with me to the church and hid it in my pocket but the game didn't actually start until the wedding was finished and there was a 2 hour wait between the wedding and reception. We made it to the reception during the 3rd quarter with Michigan up 14-9. We all walked into the dining hall and they started the blessing as the last minute ticked off the clock. Everyone had their heads bowed, I had my head bowed trying to hide the little muted TV under the table cloth. The blessing and game ended simultaneously. Everyone said "Amen!" I said, "Amen!" for a different reason. But nobody else needed to know that.

I was a mess the day Bo died, as everyone else was. But there were two moments that day that stood out above the rest.
The local news went to the hospital Bo was in and Jim Brandstatter, John Wangler and Jamie Morris were already there looking in complete shock. When they interviewed the three men, Jamie Morris was practically sobbing. Seeing Morris, who is such a funny guy, like that made me lose it.
Then later in the afternoon on WTKA, they relived a touching Bo moment from a few months earlier. Tom Slade (1971 Michigan quarterback) had been battling leukemia. After a particularly painful day in the hospital, Slade woke up in his hospital bed to see Bo by his side sitting in a chair against the wall. They looked at each other but said nothing. Then Salde went back to sleep. Five hours later, he awoke to see Bo still sitting in that same chair. Once again I lost it BIG time. The two men ended up dying 8 days apart.
And now I've seriously depressed myself. Somebody needs to post something funny now.

The fluke plays that went against Michigan over the years in that stadium, not to mention the bad calls ND benefitted from and the downright bizarre happenings like a ref using an index card to measure for a Michigan first down is NOT going to make me miss that place.

I'm not going to get angry over us not being ranked. We came off a crap season which ended with us looking like crap against a crap team in a crap bowl game. And preseason rankings don't mean anything. However, that's not going to keep me from casting judgment on the other teams. So here goes.
1. USC at #15 sounds a little too generous.
2. Did Missouri graduate half their team from last year? 24th sounds awfully low to start after the year they had last season.
3. Notre Dame at #17 also sounds generous even before the academic fraud thing broke. Does the return of Everitt Gholston mean THAT much? Also, FUCK Notre Dame.
4. Alabama at #2 despite losing AJ McCaron just depresses me but it doesn't surprise me when Saban can buy pretty much any player he wants.
5. Six PAC 12 teams in the top 25? Did that conference get good while I wasn't looking?
6. I guess I can't argue the Bucks being in the top ten but 5/6 does sound generous after the defensive woes they had last year. 9/10 sounds more deserving.

Although the "weirdness" factor would clearly be overshadowed by the fact it was 98% misery from beginning to end of RichRod's time here.

Today, he sent me a text about Michigan's alternate jersey for the PSU game, basically asking, "WTF?" And then he said something that I couldn't agree more with: "Michigan is in a category with Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State, USC, Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama. You have a classic, historical look that you DON'T mess with. Even if it's just one game. Every other team in America, they can do this alternate jersey crap but these schools? No."

Moment of Zen was very memorable. Drew Brees already with a ton of hype from the year before (when he didn't have to play us or OSU). Rainy homecoming. Lloyd Carr wondering why we were playing a Brees led Purdue team when the homecoming game is SUPPOSED to be an easy opponent.
Half of Purdue's points were thanks to 2 fumbles by A-Train deep in our own territory that they turned into field goals. Brees played OK. Boiler receivers dropped a ton of passes.
Lloyd was still doing the quarterback survey thing. Brady starts the 1st quarter, Henson starts the 2nd quarter and then coaches meet at halftime to decide who plays the rest of the game.

I wasn't at 95 Purdue but I have the full game in my collection. The ESPN camera shows a full view of the stadium and there is definitely 100,000 at kickoff. But the 2nd quarter is a completely different story. People made it because the morning started out warmer but the weather took a nosedive really quickly. I don't think the fans expected it to get that bad so fast and they, understandably weren't going to stick around. By the start of the second quarter, there were at least 30,000 that had already left.
I know Michigan's attendance numbers have been suspect at times but I don't think 95 Purdue should count. They showed up and they were on time. They just left really early. Now the 2011 Purdue and Minnesota games I went to with the almost empty student sections is a different story. I didn't believe those numbers when they were announced.

Keith struggled with names that day and he was not his vintage self. It was kind of depressing to hear.
The most confused Keith ever sounded, however, was during WSU's last drive against us in the 98 Rose Bowl when they got 50 yards on a blatant pushoff on Woodson who would have easily intercepted the pass to end the game. Keith's call on that was...

WIDE RECEIVERS - Perfect. Those 4 were truly the best. There's no way to argue with those picks.
QUARTERBACKS - This is where it could get messy. Leach and Harbaugh belong on there, no questions asked. Brady is given bonus points because of the NFL career (which really shouldn't count) but I'd take the 99 version of him being the comeback king. As far as college career goes, I would take Elvis Grbac over Brady. We played brutally tough schedules in his day - Notre Dame was an elite program at the time, Florida State, Boston College, Washington teams in the Rose Bowl led by QB Mark Brunell, plus we won big ten titles every year he was here and we never lost to Ohio State.
I think I like Chad Henne being on there with Denard just off the list. Please don't shoot me. Denard was likable, electric, and ran for an insane amount of yards. But the 40 interceptions keeps him down. I was scared to death every time he passed the ball.
If Drew Henson came back in 2001 and continued doing the kind of stuff he did the previous year, I would have to put him on there. I still maintain that he's the most all around talented QB we have had in my lifetime.
RUNNING BACKS: Wasn't alive to see Lytle and Johnson but their stats speak for themselves. Wheatley had to be on there. With the record, I have no problem with Hart being on there but I think Jamie Morris had some qualities that were more pleasing to watch. He was about the same size as Hart but with more speed. Whenever he got tackled, he almost always seemed to fall forward and get a couple extra yards. He ran the "long ball" more often while Hart had a ton of 10-15 yard runs through his career. They all added up in the end but Jamie's style was more fun to watch.

Memories of being at Braylonfest 2004.
*The game was a 4:30 kickoff. At the time, that was the latest start ever for a Michigan home game and I felt kind honored to be (what I thought would be) the closest thing to a night game the big house would ever see.
*Walking to the stadium, I made note of how windy it was and it immediately made me nervous for the kicking game. Sure enough, the wind never stopped and the stadium was dead silent for almost every PAT and field goal attempt.
*MSU was a horrible team but played waaaaaay beyond what was expected of them. I sat in the south end zone so I had to listen to MSU's band play that damn fight song so many times, I thought I was going to lose my mind.
*All the drama happened in the OPPOSITE end zone. Only a Mike Hart TD was scored in front of us in the 1st quarter.
*Lloyd was always extra stubborn when it came to the running game. The fans everywhere were screaming all day to throw the damn ball.
*I lost all hope once we were down 27-10. I didn't leave early. I just sat in my seat like a zombie. I debated ripping my ticket stub. Thank GOD I didn't. MSU fans started taunting us.
*Tim Massaquoi's 2 point conversion catch I couldn't see. I had to watch the crowd's reaction to know whether he caught it.
*I tried to scream in the overtimes whenever MSU was on offense but I was so nervous, I could barely make a sound. I sounded kind of like Peter Brady on that episode of the Brady Bunch where his voice changed.
*After MSU's last offensive attempt and the game was over, I could finally scream again. Then I turned around and hugged some random dude sitting behind me. He probably thought I was a nut but he was so happy he hugged me back. Then while the rest of the stadium was going nuts, I had to sit down because I felt like I was going to pass out.

I think the majority of us who have followed the modern history of this rivalry are well aware that the outcome of this game has had little to do with the success (or lack of success) on the rest of the season. But we still obviously want to win it because...you know, FUCK Notre Dame.
As for your other points, I don't doubt that this rivalry has put together so many fantastic finishes the last 35 years. And yes, we probably SHOULD play every year. But that doen't mean I want us to anymore.
This goes beyond our painful memories with them like the ref in South Bend using an index card to see if Michigan got a first down or Carlyle Holiday leaving the ball behind on the 2 yard line and getting rewarded a touchdown.
It's the endless undeserved hype. The underserved NBC TV contract that continues to get renewed despite the fact that they are 24th in winning percentage since they got it. And then my personal breaking point came when after decades and decades of dodging conference invites, they figured out that they MUST be in one in this day and age but still make their own terms by saying they want to be a part time member. And then the ACC sacrifices their balls and agrees to it. That's not how it should be. You're either a full fledged conference member or you're not. I had always been annoyed at the special treatment ND got but once this "membership" happened with the ACC, I was done. When we stop playing them after this season, I will have a much easier time trying to stop getting mad over all the shit they get away with.

While technically true of those 3 games, only the Penn State game was a disaster for the defense. At least they showed up in the other 2.
The non-existent offense did us in against Iowa. And one of the (many) low points in the season for me was seeing our weak ass offense make Nebraska's 116th ranked defense look like world beaters.
The defense was painfully bad against Akron, Penn State, Indiana, OSU and Kansas State. Many times almost Gerg like with giving up big play after big play through shocking futility. I think we were so busy pulling our hair out over the offensive line that we overlooked how often the defense could not get the job done. We beat OSU and don't even have to settle for the 2 point conversion attempt if they just play a D+ to C- game. And giving up over 500 yards to Indiana is just wrong, wrong, wrong.

I was at the Horror. My seat was in row B (technically the 2nd row) of the north end zone....right where the field goal was blocked on the last play.
I understand all the complaints and arguments for scheduling this opponent again. And I know beating them 100-0 won't change history. But speaking as someone who basically had front row seats to witness this insanely painful moment in sports history, I still want to see us pound those guys into the ground. And if we don't win by AT LEAST 50 points, I think I will lose my mind.

I remember someone posting the full game a couple years back but it might have been removed.
I have the game in my collection but it's my least favorite win over Notre Dame and not a game I revisit very often. Other than John Carney missing the last second field goal and some nice plays by Jamie Morris, there's not much about that game that's fun to remember. ND was unranked and finished the season unranked. That game should NOT have been close and ND never punted. Lou Holtz had them playing light years ahead of their talent in just his first game and they were sooooo close to knocking us off.
The best highlight reel for that game would cover 6 plays. The rest of that game, not so much.

"When he took over the Alabama brand, it's not like he was taking over a losing program."
It amazes me how short people's memories are. Look at the several seasons leading up to Saban's arrival for Alabama. 3-8, 7-5, 4-9, 6-6, 7-5, 6-7 with 2 random 10 win seasons in-between. Not a losing program all time but at THAT time pretty bad. They had some pretty horrid seasons in the 90s as well.
It's kind of like USC before Pete Carrol arrived in 2001 and got them the best players money can buy. 60+ losses over an 8 year span, the college football world jokingly referring to them as SC Community College.
The 25 years before Mack Brown arrived, Texas was about as bad to a mediocre program as one can be.
Oklahoma and LSU in the 90's? Awful.

|11 weeks 3 days ago||The streak against Indiana||
The streak against Indiana was the only winning streak that survived the RichRod years. But unfortunately, they know how to score and score often against our defense now.
Here's a fact that will blow your mind about the 87 Indiana game. The Hoosiers were the favorite for that one. They were ranked #15. Michigan was ranked #20. The way that game unfolded was a 10-7 4th quarter lead for us until Indiana blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for the game winning score, 14-10. Indiana was a decent conference team in the late 80's into the early 90's under Bill Mallory.
A happier memory from that 87 Indiana team was their 31-10 win over the Bucks in Columbus...
|11 weeks 3 days ago||In 88, Taylor was lost for||
In 88, Taylor was lost for the year in the epic freezing Minnesota game at the Big House. And Brown took over the rest of the season. But he still came in and played in the blowouts, probably much earlier than you would see in a blowout today. Taylor got injured quite often and Brown needed to always be ready.
But I hear you on the 1988 squad. They were much better than their 9-2-1 record.
*Mike Gillette's game winning field goal against Notre Dame was just wide right in the final seconds. We lose 19-17 and those bastards go on to win the national title.
*The next week, we blow a 30-14 lead on #1 Miami. The Hurricanes pull a Notre Dame and during their comeback, seem to complete miracle play after miracle play combined with a miracle onside kick and we lose 31-30. That Miami team finished 12-1.
Two losses by a combined 3 points to the #1 and #2 teams in the country. And the tie against Iowa? We come back from a 17-3 hole, tie the game. In the 4th quarter, we put in one last drive. On first and goal from the 1 yard line, Tracy Williams fumbles the ball away. So the game ends 17-17.
For such a great team, they had so many instances of horrible luck. And the same villains in college football got to benefit from it once again.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Of all the interceptions||
Of all the interceptions Demetriuos Brown threw in that game, the 7th was the worst. You had Greg McMurtry absolutely wide open in the corner of the end zone and Brown didn't even glance at him, instead throwing the 7th pick.
Take that play back, throw the easy TD to McMurtry and a rebuilding (by Bo's standards) Michigan team beats MSU's best squad in a decade 18-17, despite getting picked off 6 times. Sparty fans would have been suicidal. It would have been epic.

I'll admit it. I was a HUGE Brady Bunch fan. When I was little, I would watch the reruns of the show on TBS. When I was 6, I told my mom I wanted to leave home and move in with the Bradys. She had to break the news to me that the Brady kids were all grown up, so was there really any point?
Years later, when I found out Ann B. Davis went to Michigan, I thought that was so awesome. Hopefully she went to the Big House some time her senior year and saw the Mad Magicians play.

That win meant so much. After this game, the team played 'A' football the rest of the season, (until the Rose Bowl of course when we lost to another pay for play Pete Carroll USC team.)
But after that Minnesota game....
*56-14 over Illinois with the best punt return for a TD by Breaston ever.
*31-3 over a top ten Purdue team that came in with a ton of hype and was playing great football all year.
*27-20 over a MSU team that was coming off 6 straight wins and the media was suddenly in love with John L. (That game wasn't as close as the final score, it would have ended 34-13 had Navarre not fumbled on an unblocked sack that was returned 80 yards for a TD).
*41-10 over Northwestern...returning to Evantson for the first time since the horrible 54-51 game.
*35-21 over OSU.... Should have gone up 35-7 but Braylon's 90 yard TD was called back thanks to holding.
That was some excellent football during those 6 weeks.

You need to keep your heartbreak straight. That was the year before. And my main memory of that game, other than Braylon dropping the wide open easy TD bomb, was when a Navarre pass bounced up off of Braylon's heel and right into the hands of a USC player when we were inside our own 20. I used to think that way but not anymore.
Going 11-2 in 2011 with a Sugar Bowl victory didnt make a difference in the 2 B1G games I went to as the student section was half empty for the Minnesota game (which was Homecoming) and the Purdue game. Nebraska was ranked that year and I was shocked when I saw how many empty seats there were.
Those problems remained coming off that 11-2 season in 2012. A meh home schedule that year but we still went 6-0 at home with some classic games.
The reality is it doesn't matter how good or bad the product on the field is. The only sold out games are always going to be the rivalry ones or a top ten conference opponent. Students could care less about all the rest. I don't think they see any difference between a 8-4 Purdue team and a 2-10 Akron team. The prices are ridiculous but I don't think it would any different if they were cheaper.
Expanding the student section before the 2011 season seems like the biggest epic fail now.

I guess I'm on my own when it comes to this. I like Musberger. I always have. Him saying, "You are looking live at the big house in Ann Arbor," will always be one of my favorite memories of the college football season.
In the 90's, he became a favorite of mine because of all the jabs he used to take at OSU under John Cooper. He frequently said on the air during random games that he expected Michigan to win THE GAME. One time, Don Shane got an interview with him on the Big Ten Ticket. It was early in the season but Brent brought up this line....
BRENT: The team is playing better and they know it will just be a matter of time before they go to Columbus and beat the Bucks yet again for a Big Ten Title.
DON: Maybe not this year.
BRENT: They'll find a way to win. They always do.
Then in 1998 when a crappy MSU team pulled off the ultimate upset of #1 OSU in Columbus (Remember Joe Germaine's end zone interception and Cooper angrily throwing his hat on the field in disgust?) The first words out of Brent's mouth were... "Ladies and Gentlmen, Michigan State has just beaten Michigan to the punch.". Buckeye fans felt lower than low at that moment and Brent poured salt in the wound by immediately bringing up their futility against Michigan. It was so beautiful. (God, I miss those days)
And it's also kind of hard to forget our 8-1 record when Brent broadcasts a Michigan/Notre Dame game. He called Desmond's fourth down catch and Roundtree's game winner for UTL.
I'm going to miss him and I make no apologies for that.

That's almost as bad as Dakich's "Ohio State deserves strength of schedule points for beating Bryant, Vermont and Ohio U," comment during the Illinois game.

I just saw that on ESPN. What the hell was he thinking?

I really liked Chris Young. Nice guy, played hard. His freshman year was the first year of Michigan's nose dive to hell from the sanctions.
I went to senior night at Crisler in 2002. The team was awful. The opponent was Ohio State, who was finally starting to turn their program around. The game ended up being a 9 point loss. The Buckeye fans in the upper bowl were assholes. The game was already lost but during the final timeout, Chris Young ran out to mid-court, bent down, and kissed the block M. I loved his loyalty despite the team's unfortunate results over his career.

Congrats to Nebraska and screw Tom Crean.
I want so badly for us to go all Illinois on them this weekend.

Nik's 3 right before the half (the ball leaves his hands at .6 seconds) after the Orange Crush chant USA! I can watch that a million times, followed by Mike Tirico's 'O Canada!". LOL!
When it comes to anything Michigan related, Illinois fans have a tendency to be assholes. Not quite the level of Buckeye assdom but about a level below, which is still pretty bad. That's why that shot was my favorite of all of Nik's 3's.

Any time we get a basket now, I look for Andrew Dakich on the bench just to see his reaction.
|24 weeks 2 days ago||In regards to Wisconsin, I||
In regards to Wisconsin, I thought they would win their last 2 games easily...and they still might. But after seeing them barely beat Penn State last weekend I'm starting to wonder how they'll do when they travel to Nebraska, who has only lost to us at home all season. Those flat screens in the bathroom stalls really seem to make the Huskers play better and maybe they can pull it off.
Either way, f*ck Bo Ryan.

Kolesar couldn't play in that game. He had broken his collar bone diving for a catch against Illinois a few weeks prior.
This past summer, he emailed me and asked me if I could send him the video clip of his injury. Really nice guy.

I was in kindergarten.
Muppet Babies started that year and was THE must watch of Saturday morning cartoons.

That was when the Big Ten title game was played on a Saturday and not 2 minutes before the Selection Sunday presentation.
Just to really blow your mind. These are the coaches that Brian Ellerbe beat that season by double digits: Tom Izzo, Jim Boeheim, Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight.
And then the following year, the program went to hell.

Two confessions. One I'm proud of. One I'm not.
The Bad: I had a bad feeling about this game. Soooooo, I look like a real jackass right now. But I'm too happy to care.
The Good: Right before the half, when Illinois' crowd got loud after cutting our 20 point lead to 18 points, and then giving us all those fouls to run down the clock to 4 seconds... I thought to myself how much I would love to stick it to Illini fans with us getting a basket at the buzzer to end the half. Then Nik drained that 3. LOL!
That was too awesome for words. That's the first ever time I had a "wouldn't it be awesome if we did _______ " thought and the team actually listened to me.

His "hang time" on dunks seemed a little longer in the Minnesota game, which made me nervous. A few close calls.
|24 weeks 4 days ago||Wisconsin||
Wisconsin has had that scheduling quirk in football and basketball for about 15 years now. Pretty strange to see it happen to a different team.
|24 weeks 4 days ago||Illinois will be tough to||
Illinois will be tough to beat. Our squad loves to make us sweat and Illinois considers us a rival. (Remember, it's Illinois students who constantly wear those 'Muck Fichigan' t-shirts.)
That place will be loud and Illinois will be fired up.
|24 weeks 5 days ago||I'm still bitter about that||
I'm still bitter about that loss, though. Indiana was a crap team playing like crap when we went to Assembly. Then after playing us, they went back to playing like crap again and lost 3 straight including home losses to Northwestern and Penn State.
F*ck those guys and their jackass of a coach.

They took MSU to overtime at Breslin. They may just win against them in Columbus.
Either way, Izzo will provide many gifs of yet another meltdown.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||So many ranked teams losing||
So many ranked teams losing to unranked teams today. That's why I was nervous going into the Minnesota game tonight.
As for rankings, I think we only move up a couple spots because I don't think the polls will care much about us beating Minnesota and having a miracle one point win over a bad Purdue team. But that's all right. All I care about right now is getting the outright B1G title.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||Correct. But the way||
Correct. But the way Wisconsin is playing right now, I don't think they're going to lose. So it's crucial that we win at least one of our last two games.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||That was from today, right?||
That was from today, right? What was Izzo so upset about?
Did a ref finally T him up for going too far out on the court?
|24 weeks 6 days ago||When the record books are||
When the record books are printed out, I'm sure there will be a foot note next to Michigan's name that says - B1G Champs of 2014....but only because Michigan State had injuries. If they were healthy, they would be stronger than the Miami Heat.
Oh well. I'll take the conference championship anyway.
