|2 days 5 hours ago||The SEC started doing this||
The SEC started doing this several years ago. They make their second to last game against a 1AA team, which is kind of brilliant. The majority of their teams basically have a bye week before playing their most hated rival. There's no stress and you can rest players or have them play limited time if need be in preparation for the week ahead.
Are they able to schedule like this because so many of the SEC has rivals that are out of conference? If Michigan could get back to looking like Michigan again, I'd love to have this scheduling arrangement in the B1G. If we're stuck playing UMass or App State, schedule them the week before the Ohio State game.

So I guess college basketball is becoming like college football in that 90% of the teams will play nobodies out of conference and we have to wait until conference season to get matchups between ranked teams.
I would love it if by some miracle, we could win at Arizona. I'm still pissed over McGary being given a foul for....breathing too hard on a Wildcat last year at Crisler which gave them the game winning free throws.

It's so depressing because I never dreamed it would have gotten THIS bad. When he was hired in 2011 and the rest of the college football world was like, "Seriously? Brady Hoke is the best coach Michigan could get?" I didn't have a strong opinion either way. But I really, really liked it when Hoke said he would have walked from California to be the head coach here because it was his dream job. And I was REALLY hoping he would have success.
We all know what's happened since. And it's got to stop. Players not developing. Us constantly making awful teams look like world beaters. Getting blown out by our rivals and not seeming very embarrassed by it. No emotion, no anger on the sidelines...just endless clapping. It's been a disaster and it's time for Hoke to move on.

|2 weeks 5 days ago||It's kind of sad to think of||
It's kind of sad to think of the expectations and mentality of the program when Moeller was coaching to what's going on now. Michigan was coming off 5 straight Big Ten championships and then when we went 8-4 in 1993, people started freaking the hell out immediately and Moeller felt big time pressure. (This was when 8-4 was considered the bottom of the barrel worst case scenario for us.)
In 1994, we were pre-season #3 I believe, with the #1 strength of schedule but the favorite to win the Big Ten. Before the season started, the injury GODS struck down hard as we lost Walter Smith for the season, Tyrone Wheatley for the first couple of games, Joe Marinaro, and a few other I'm forgetting. Again, Moeller felt the pressure and TV commentators brought up how everyone in Ann Arbor was ready to kill him after all those injuries and the season had not even started yet.
Moeller's last two teams, just like Lloyd's first two teams suffered from that bizarre mid-90's slump of underachieving mixed with flukes and bad luck. Wheather it was Ricky Powers fumble basically handing the game to Illinois, the hail mary against Colorado or Lloyd's insane playcalling on the goal line at Purdue. All that sh*t continued to happen yet we had a decent record against highly ranked teams.
Every account I've ever read of the restaraunt incident blamed it on Moeller feeling the intense stress because of two straight 8-4 seasons. Lloyd actually felt it too after his first two seasons with the exact same results on the field, he started stress eating as a result, gained weight and ran the steps at the big house to take it off. But then 1997 happened and all was good.

What we have learned over the years is it's Indiana's offense that causes worry.

2009: 467 yards of total offense (197 rushing, 270 passing) and one piece of gum thrown by Bill Lynch.
2010: 574 yards of total offense (297 rushing, 277 passing) and 41 minutes in time of possession.
2013: 572 yards of total offense (410 passing, 162 rushing) converting 9 of their 14 3rd downs and scoring 47 points, which is the most points IU has scored in a game against Michigan in the series history.
That is the trend now. I'd like to say this weekend could be different but...you've seen the team play this year.

In regards to Ellerbe, he kind of pulled a Brady Hoke in having a good first season. The basketball team had quailty wins over #1 Duke, Syracuse, Indiana, MSU, and ended up 25-7. I don't think it was until the following year when the sh*t hit the fan about the Martin saga and by then, the interim lable had already been removed.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Next week, it will have been||
Next week, it will have been ten years since Florida fired Ron Zook. He was considered a clown, a disaster of a coach (who ironically had a much better record against UF's rivals than Hoke has had against our rivals). I believe it happened after Florida had lost 38-31 to Mississippi State, who had lost to 1-AA Maine earlier in the season. UF wasted no time in canning him even though there were 4 games left in the season plus the bowl game. Despite getting fired, Zook still coached the team through those final 5 games while the school looked for a new coach, eventually ending up with Urban Meyer.
Is there any way the same could be done with Hoke? Or was that a rare thing that happened at Florida? Can't Hoke be fired tomorrow and still have him finish the season, provided he wants to? Not having to wait until Thanksgiving to know it's official really would give us some semblance of happiness.

I'm probably going to make you feel worse but here goes.
1. MSU's teams in 1978, 1990 and 1999 actually ended up being good squads.
2. Yeah, they got away with mugging Desmond on the 2 point conversion in 1990, the ref gave them a bogus extra yard on their game winning drive when we had stopped them on 4th down in 1995 and Spartan Bob gave them the extra second and the ref decided to ignore the massive holding on the game winning play in 2001...all painful blown calls that screwed us but for the rest of those games, those MSU teams put up fights that Hoke teams are completely incapable of putting up, especially the last two years, especially on the road.
3. MSU's teams in 93, 95 and 2001 stunk but they weren't the train wreck we currently are. Those teams were 6-6, 6-5-1 and 7-5. Do you see us winning 6 games this year because I certainly don't.
4. Harbaugh broke his arm in 1984 in the first half. Once he was out, that win was in the bag for MSU. Conner Cook isn't going to break any bones.
5. And being a Michigan fan means knowing that Michigan should never be the underdog in this series, as we weren't for 45 years. Now we're at the point where the majority of us believe we can't stay within 4 touchdowns of MSU. How fucking depressing is that?

"Spotting the University of Michigan two touchdowns is like giving Carl Lewis a 20-yard head start."

Bo's reactions to players screwing up was pretty sweet. He'd get his anger and frustration out right away, as soon as the play finished. But he calmed down before the player reached the sideline and then had a talk with him that looked like a lecture but didn't look humiliating to the player, not like that asshole Brian Kelly.
Hoke is so calm that I think if a random stranger approached him on the street and screamed in his face, he'd just clap a few times and walk on. And he's probably been that way his whole life.
Although, if you watch any games from when Hoke was on the coaching staff under Carr, he actually did get animated once in a while on the sidelines and had expressions of disgust when a ref would make a bad call. So he is capable of getting mad, he just hasn't done it yet as a HC.

Ever notice how often these miracle hail Mary's are almost always won by the road team? Doug Flutie and Boston College winning at Miami, Nick Saban's LSU team winning the Bluegrass miracle at Kentucky, Northwestern at Minnesota several years back, Kordell Stewart at the big house, ASU at USC.
In Michigan's case, I guess our game ending hail Mary would be Dresibach to Mercury Hayes against Virginia...although that would probably be a mini-hail Mary. We also had halftime hail Mary's, Demtrious Brown to Greg McMurtry against Iowa in '87 and Todd Collins to Amani Toomer against NC State in the 93 bowl game but those are never as exciting as game enders.
|7 weeks 6 hours ago||This team is agonizing to||
This team is agonizing to watch. Nobody would disagree with that. But the salt on the wound for me is continuing to see how happy we make our opponents. Whether its Notre Dame's defensive coordinator smiling and jumping around like a kid on the last day of school or Minnesota players hugging, high fiving and congratulating each other halfway through the 3rd quarter like the game is already over or the Rutgers players skipping and prancing to the sidelines once we've come up with another 3 and out...I'm just sick of it.
I'm tired of every opponent acting like its time for victory formation against us with 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. I hate it. I want to punch them but at the same time, I don't blame them.
|7 weeks 6 hours ago||Indeed. It's yet another sad||
Indeed. It's yet another sad thing that we've been reduced to. But we heard it long before this season even started. Over the summer, Hoke and the players kept making the comment that last years team was a few plays away from being 10-3 instead of 7-6.
When you go by that mentality and completely ignore how GOD awful you looked from game 3 to game 13, I guess we shouldn't be surprised when we now hear that wins/losses are just a statistic.
Florida fans may be in pain right now but I'd take their pain over...this..any day.

Remember when Ron Zook got fired from Florida with 4 games left in his third season? The sh*t hit the fan when Florida lost to Mississippi State 38-31. He was fired the next day and UF bought out his contract. However, he still coached the last 4 games and then the bowl game.
Couldn't the same be done with Hoke? I could see him doing it out of loyalty to the school. Or was the Zook/Florida issue a rare thing?
Ironically, while Zook was considered a clown, he had a much better record against Florida's rivals (Tennessee, Georgia and FSU) than Hoke has at Michigan against ND, MSU and OSU. In fact, after Zook's firing, he got UF their first victory over FSU at Doak Stadium in 20 years, something even Steve Spurrier could never do.

It's one of those phrases that will never die, I'm afraid. And the reason for that, I think, is because the people who are most vocal in saying it are former players. I can't tell you how many of them kept saying how happy they were when Hoke was hired because he was a "Michigan Man." Braylon in particular seemed to say it the most.
I love these guys. I grew up worshipping them. They gave me many happy memories on the field that I will NEVER forget. But they have got to STFU when it comes to the "Michigan Man," thing.
Bo was a coaching hire from outside the family and over time, he became the biggest, probably most beloved Michigan man of all time. Why is that always lost on them?

Once Brady Hoke was hired, all these players kept saying, "Thank GOD we got a Michigan man." I remember Braylon in particular saying that a ton.

Over the last 7 years, I've watched Michigan football sink to points of futility that I never thought possible. So at this point, few things shocked me anymore. I was wrong.
This whole Shane Morris saga seems unreal. Either way, Hoke looks like a fool. If he noticed it and still kept playing him, that's evil. If he didn't notice it (though I don't know how he couldn't) he's a clueless moron. How does a coach NOT miss the multiple instances of Shane's injury?

Some coaches film WAS in color in those days. Look at the 1969 Vanderbilt game on my channel, look at the 1970 MSU game highlights, look at all the highlights from the early 70's in the 'Schembechler Years,' video that was released by M-Den....all coaches films, all in color.
The colored highlights from that OSU game have got to be from coaches' film, even the end zone shot of Tom Slade pitching the ball to Billy Taylor on the touchdown.
My uncle was a student at UM at the time as was a family friend. My dad complained about not being able to see the game on TV. And it was mentioned in the book, ' The Ten Year War," that it wasn't televised.
I wasn't alive but I tend to trust those sources who were. It remains the only game from the Ten Year War that is impossible to find anywhere online and I think there is reason for that. But that's just my lame critical thinking skills at work here.

The 92 Purdue game was on ESPN, and featured the rabbit that got on the field and couldn't be caught for several minutes.
|9 weeks 6 days ago||The last time THE GAME was||
The last time THE GAME was not televised was 1971. Michigan was 10-0 but OSU was only 6-3 so ABC figured the matchup wasn't worthy of being on TV, and America missed out on seeing Woody Hayes lose his sh*t and throw the sideline markers at the refs after the Thom Darden interception.
As far as I know, only twice in the 70's was a Mich/MSU game televised...on ABC in 1975 and 1979. ABC chose to air Michigan's game with Minnesota in 1976 over our game with Sparty. MSU was not relevant to get any national attention...when all was right with the world.
I've been told the 1994 Minnesota game at the big house was not televised. My copy of the game, that I traded for online, is from some network in Minneapolis that aired the game.
Likewise, Michigan's games against Wisconsin in 1988 and 1990 were not televised, as far as I know, in Michigan. But some Wisconsin station broadcasted them and I got the copies. The commentators are awful Badger homers and once we're up by 50, they start taking jabs at us and Bo, which is really funny. A Wisconsin fan taking trash about Michigan in 1988 would be the same as a New Mexico State fan talking trash about Alabama today.

|11 weeks 5 days ago||Of all the things to get||
Of all the things to get hyped for this game, I would rank this at the bottom. Because we could take over the winning % this season regardless of what happens on Saturday. Or we could be trading it back and forth for a while. Or ND could vacate their wins (doubtful) and the record book would say they never took over the top spot last year. The bottom line is that this Saturday's game isn't the be all end all to achieving permanent #1 status for winning %.
Ten years ago, we had the opportunity to overtake the #1 all time winning % by winning in South Bend and unfortunately, we lost to a shitty Notre Dame squad 28-20. (It was bad timing as Henne was thrust into the QB spot the previous week and this was his first road game, Mike Hart's talents weren't discovered until the following week and the team just hadn't found their mojo yet.) The weeks that followed, we kept winning and ND kept losing and we overtook the #1 spot a short time later anyway and kept it until last year's bowl season.
So really, the winning % would just be a sliver of icing on top of the cake. The rest of the icing would consist of this being the final meeting combined with their psycho purple faced coach. The cake part would be the fact that they're ND and as I always say, fuck Notre Dame.
