There's going to be more closeups of Harbaugh during that game than you have EVER seen from a head coach during a game.

I was ready to build a shrine to Greg Mattison that year over how improved the defense was, minus the ND and OSU games....contests where the D got torched but we outlasted in the end. But yeah, Denard + improved D + favorable schedule made up that season.
If Desmond is trying a reverse jinx, I hope it works.

Yes! I can't wait either.
There was a moment last year that stood out to me. The season had quickly turned into a disaster and Desmond Howard said on Gameday that he had watched Michigan''s practices that week and he did NOT like what he saw. He said the only one who seemed to be putting in any real effort and extra drive was Peppers. My heart obviously sank over that comment but it made me admire Peppers more.
I really want to watch him go out there and kick some ass.

Not really. In the last 7 years I've been to 8 games and we won 6 of them.
Some folks probably forget that Brady Hoke was 20-0 in home games until our train wreck offense couldn't do sh*t against Nebraska's 117th ranked defense two years ago.
Last year was the first time since 1996 that I didn't attend a single game. There was no way I could watch that madness in person.

The timing of this one had some drama, being just a few months removed from the Moeller thing. The team was still sort of in mourning. Carr couldn't even bring himself to use Moeller's parking spot.
Remy Hamilton, who kicked 26 field goals the year before (and reached GOD level status in my eyes for kicking the game winner in South Bend) had a horrible outing in scrimmage and a horrible week of practice. He missed his only FG attempt that day.
The running game resulted in this:
Tim Biakabutuka 7 for 36 yards, Chris Howard 6 for 13 yards and Ed Davis 4 for 11 yards.
Dreisbach was 27 of 52 for 372 yards, 2 TD's and 2 interceptions.

Stanford got robbed of a TD that broke the plane in OT.
Pitt got called for a phantom pass interference that set up the game tying TD to send it to OT. Then in the 2nd OT, Pitt's shot at the game winning field goal was wide right but ND was offside and there was conveniently no flag or re-kick. Plus I recall a ND player taking a punch at a Pitt player and the ref doing nothing about it.
So yeah. There was some major luck on their part.

Adding a few notes to some of those losses.
There was a screw job in that 2000 UCLA game from the officials...though it's been so long I can't remember the specific moment where a Bruin picked off a pass with one foot out of bounds, allowing them to set up the winning score (I believe).
2002 Notre Dame was miserable all around but that was also the game where Carlyle Halliday left the football on the two yard line which then rolled under a Michigan defender while Halliday went into the end zone holding air and got rewarded the score. Had the correct call been made, we go into halftime down 9-7 instead of 16-7.
2003 Oregon hurt...bad. Every single thing that could go wrong on special teams did and the Ducks got rewarded almost all their points because of them.
Poor Navarre. I always liked him. He took so much criticism and still did his best to improve every week. There was never an interview with him I saw where he didn't come across as a really nice guy.

He was very deserving of that #1 jersey. All American. Lethal return man. Stud receiver. Tons of speed. He did everything that Desmond did, including the diving catches - although Desmond's looked like poetry in motion. He just had more size.
He was a game changer. His returns sparked comeback wins over OSU in 1990 and Penn State in 1993, both of those games being on the road. He was a major weapon but looking back, he never seems to have the nostalgic fanfare that a AC, Howard, Woodson or a Wheatley has. I just don't get it.

Honestly, the submarine is kind of nice. Countdown to kickoff in years past would be dissected here to the point of madness. A player doing one drill during a 6 second clip would either thrill or scare the hell out of people. I understand fans wanting to keep the football juices burning but extreme reactions to a couple seconds of footage was causing too much stress.
And what's worse is when the paranoia actually turns out to be true. Many folks were concerned over the way the team looked in that August scrimmage last year at the big house and it was followed by a crap season. After that scrimmage, I felt exactly the way I did whenever Indiana would destroy our defense under RichRod....where I'm praying and hoping it was just a fluke, a bad day. But in the end, we just sucked.
If the submarine helps the team become stronger, build chemistry and win games, I'm perfectly happy being left in the dark until game one. And after the crapfest we have witnessed the last 7 years (minus 2011), the mystery factor feels much better than the stress.

I'll admit, I've been feeling better at the thought of Ruddock being the starter over Morris but I guess that's not really fair considering the other factors involved in Shane's two games as a starter.
In the Toilet Bowl game against Kansas State, he was behind (possibly) the worst O-Line in school history. The defense, which was supposed to be the strength of that squad, got torched by a mediocre KSU team, we were down double digits before you could blink twice. It's hard to put any QB in that situation. In addition, there are the rumors (which of course I can't verify) that the team didn't want to be there and their lackluster play reflected that. And honestly, after the way they lost the OSU game, it wouldn't surprise me.
Last year's Minnesota game, I don't have the stomach to go back and look it over again but if I'm not mistaken, wasn't the O-Line still in train wreck mode at that point? The team, with Gardner, had already been destroyed in 2 of their 3 previous games so morale might have been low. But that's all I got for this one. Before Morris took that infamous hit, I think he had only two decent throws all game. I believe his interception was off a deflection but it was a killer. 7 of 19 for 49 yards and a pick.
I'd really like to see how Morris looks under competent coaching and with a less dysfunctional supporting cast around him.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||The game against Utah under||
The game against Utah under Carr was the result of a last minute schedule change.
Our original non-conference schedule in 2002 was Western, Notre Dame, Washington and Oregon. That was considered way too difficult. So Bill Martin asked Oregon to reschedule the Ann Arbor meeting to a later date and since schedules were booked until 2007, that was when the game with the Ducks would now take place.
Enter Utah as the replacement opponent, which was supposed to be an easier matchup. And in reality, it should have been. That Utah team didn't even qualify for a bowl game.
From there, I don't know why Utah continued to be scheduled.
In yet another be careful what you wish for moment, we probably should have never rescheduled that game with the Ducks. They ended up going 7-6 that year. I'm pretty sure we would have beaten them and then there would have never been that disaster game against them in 07 and probably no Henne injury either.

|3 weeks 4 days ago||Putting aside lethal return||
Putting aside lethal return men like Carter, Howard, Alexander and Breaston, special teams have really never been Michigan's forte.
From Schembechler through Carr, we've probably had just two star FG kickers in Mike Gillette and Remy Hamilton. Otherwise, field goal kicking usually ranged between C- to B- until RichRod, when it became a disaster until Brendan Gibbons had a good year and half.
I only recall Hayden Epstein doing kick-offs that weren't returnable. Punting always seemed to be meh under Carr.
Tripp Welbourne and Vada Murray were experts at blocking FG's and extra points but I can't think of any others who consistently did well there.

There's no shame in going 11 years without returning a blocked field goal for a score. I mean, how often does that actually happen with ANY team other than Beamer Ball at Virginia Tech?
Better kickoff and punt returns would be great for obvious reasons. But it would be nice just to have a solid FG kicker. Year after year, it seems every team in the country has kickers that can boot 50 yarders in their sleep. And for us, we're fortunate if we can get FG's between 20 and 25 yards.

Back to back weekend weddings for me in 2007.
The first was the Notre Dame game. We were 0-2 at the time which included the horror. Henne was out with an injury and I honestly thought going to a wedding would turn out to be a blessing in disguise. The ceremony finished, we all walked out of the church to wait for the bride and groom so we can blow bubbles at them. I pulled out my cell phone to call my dad for the score, so nervous to know that I was literally shaking. And then he told me, "It's halftime. Michigan is up 31-0. Notre Dame is awful." Such beautiful words, I told him to repeat. It was the biggest relief ever...and f*ck Notre Dame.
The following week was against Penn State. The wedding finished before the game started but there was two hours to kill before the reception. I brought a little handheld battery operated TV with me and watched the first half in the car...on that tiny 2 inch screen. When the reception hall opened, we went inside and took our tables. The final minute of the game was literally the same time as the blessing. So while everyone bowed their heads, I was looking down at my little TV under the table cloth and I don't think anybody noticed. But it was another win so I was happy.
I would tell people to stop scheduling Fall weddings but they have become really popular and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Oh boy. I was at this game and my most vivid memory is being pissed off afterwards.
The year before may have been a Rose Bowl season but there were a handful of games where the defense was really bad. And of course, the season ended with the 1,000 missed tackles against Vince Young. So for the start of 2005, my biggest wish was for the defense to make a statement right out of the gate, play amazing, pound their chests, etc. And Northern Illinois ended up moving the ball on us rather well. The fact that they scored 17 points angered me to no end.
The entire walk from the stadium to our car, I bitched to my dad about Jim Herrman and the fact that he needs to be fired NOW.
Little did I know what would be in store three years later....where I longed for the days of only giving up 17 points to a MAC team.

I'm still blown away that the conference would even allow such a thing to happen in the first place, Dave Brandon or no Dave Brandon. In the last 40 years, no B1G team has had to travel to a rival's stadium two years in a row. That's unheard of in the modern era.
Granted, because of the number of teams in conference, there have been instances where there have been two straight (non-rival) meetings at one stadium but it was always evened out. For instance, we played Minnesota at the Metrodome in 2002 and 2003 and we played them at the big house in 2004 and 2005. In the 80's, we did a similar pattern when we played Iowa. Why the crap is there no effort to even out this thing with Sparty?

According to wikipedia, yes, that's how it was introduced to the rest of the world...
University of Michigan
In the early fall of 1983, the Michigan Wolverines played the Huskies in Seattle and brought the wave back to Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. A letter to the sports editor of The New York Times claimed, "There are three reasons why the wave caught on at Michigan Wolverine games: It gave the fans something to do when the team was leading its opponent by 40 points, it was thrilling and exciting to see 105,000 people in the stands moving and cheering, and Bo Schembechler asked us not to do it." The fans responded to his request by doing more waves, including "Silent Waves" (standing and waving arms without cheering), "Shsh Waves" (replacing the cheering with a "shshing" sound), the "Fast Wave," the "Slow Wave," and two simultaneous waves traveling in opposite directions. The following spring, fans who had enjoyed the wave in Ann Arbor introduced it to the nearby Tiger Stadium in Detroit. The Tigers won the World Series that year and appeared on many televised games throughout 1984, so people all over America saw it.

Of the 5 touchdowns the defense gave up during the regular season, 2 of them were set up because of Jamie Morris fumbles. One fumble was against OSU as Ace pointed out inside our own 10. The other was against Indiana when we were pinned at our own 2. Morris lost the fumble, Indiana recovered it on the 1 and punched it in for the score on the next play.
The TV angle for the Harbaugh to Kolesar bomb was stupid. The clip I used for the highlight video above is from the video 'The Schembechler Years," which I dubbed Musberger's call to so you can actually see Kolesar when he's off to the races.
It's kind of annoying that here we are 30 years later and ESPN and ABC still do this with college football games, where every so often they'll show a play from an obscure angle, whether it's behind the QB, from the sideline or in the case of the 2005 UM/MSU game, shots from the aerial blimp.

Some notes about those 3 Big Ten losses.
MSU - 7 turnovers was horrible. If it were 6 turnovers, we probably would have won. At the end of the game, we were driving, down 6, and Greg McMurtry was absolutely wide open in the end zone. All Demetrious had to do was look his way and we win that game by 1. Instead, he threw pick #7.
INDIANA - Believe it or not, we were underdogs in this one. We were ranked 20th, IU was ranked 15th. Still, we had a 10-7 lead in the 4th quarter but the Hoosiers blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for the game winning score.
OSU - The Bucks were not good and we were huge favorites. Earl Bruce had already been fired the week before the game. OSU players wore headbands in honor of him, had much more to play for. We lose by 3. A couple weeks later, Bo had his second heart attack.
It was a time where 8-4 was considered bottom of the barrel but that team had key components they needed to replace. Despite this, they had chances to win in every one of their conference losses and couldn't pull them out. The next season, they started a string of 5 straight Big Ten titles.

It is bizarre how that worked out for Bo, Mo, Lloyd and Hoke. (I'm not including RichRod because we couldn't beat anybody in 2008.)
But to be fair, Moeller and Carr got screwed in their first games against MSU.
With Moeller, we had Desmond getting mugged on the two point conversion, the officials apologizing the next day for f*cking that up.
In Carr's first game against Sparty, MSU had the ball on their final drive trailing us by 4. They were forced to try and convert a 4th down to keep the drive alive. They threw a short pass to the sideline that was clearly caught a yard and half short of the marker but the ref decided to move the chains anyway. Screw job.
For Harbaugh's first season, we've got both rivalry games at home, which is something that hasn't happened since Bump Elliot was our coach. It kind of adds a whole new feel but I wish we could go back to the old format of having at least one at home and one on the road.

|8 weeks 4 days ago||I don't know if I like||
I don't know if I like scraping the division format to choose the teams for the confernce title game. If you go with the top two teams in the standings, you could still get a team that scraped their way to the top by avoiding top tier teams, which would happen more frequently now that there are 14 teams in the conference.
Example: Barry Alvarez's Wisconsin Rose Bowl teams had a tradition: Lose to Michigan and miss out on playing the other top tier B1G team (Ohio State once, Penn State the other two times). I wouldn't want to see a return to that, where a team gets rewarded for their scheduling breaks.
Also, Sparty missed out on playing OSU 15 times in the last 30 years. For some reason, they always seemed to rotate off the schedule more often than others. Now that they're in the same division, they don't have that luxury anymore and they have to play every year....which is how it should be.

1993 through 1996. Remember when those were considered the "hell years?". 8-4, 8-4, 9-4 and 8-4.
Coming off 5 straight Big Ten titles, the fans immediately wanted to skin Gary Moeller alive, especially when the injuries in practice started to mount up (Tyrone Wheatley, Walter Smith, Joe Marinaro) and then Lloyd felt the stress, despite starting out 2-0 against the Bucks, with stress eating and he started running the steps at the big house to get the weight off.
Those teams always seemed to lose in hair pulling style. The hail mary against Colorado, the Ricky Powers fumble handing the game to Illinois. They were never blown out. But they underachieved and things always seemed to go wrong at the worst time. Thankfully, those didn't seem to be an issue in the OSU game. And it didn't hurt that toolbags like Terry Glenn would release dumbass statements to fire the team up.

That popped up often when Michigan played on the road. Iowa in 1988, Wisconsin in 1986 and as recently as Penn State in 1993, were all issued warnings.
When we played in Columbus in 1990, the crowd was given the penalty and OSU lost a timeout as a result.
The big house crowd came close to getting the penalty during the 89 OSU game. The ABC cameras actually show the entire Michigan sideline desperately pleading with the fans to quite down so we won't get the penalty. It's probably one of the strangest things you'll ever see.
