|4 days 6 hours ago||I'm sorry but screw that.||
I'm sorry but screw that. MSU has received some of the most favorable scheduling (in conference play) for many, many years.
MSU has been in the Big Ten since 1953. That's 62 years. Of those 62 years, they did not have to play Ohio State 24 times. That's roughly 40% of the history of their membership. Whenever these teams play each other (and I'm rooting for that meteor) I'm always struck when the broadcasters will show the all time series record between the two teams and I see how rarely they have played. For some reason, OSU has rotated off of MSU's schedule a lot.
With the addition of Maryland and Rutgers to the conference, the divisions got changed and MSU and OSU now shared the same one. My reaction was, "Great! Now MSU has to play OSU every year. No more favorable scheduling.
If MSU goes to the other division, they get this luxury back. Only now it would probably be 4-6 years between meetings with the Bucks. And like I said before, screw that.
|4 days 8 hours ago||I keep hearing that Manuel is||
I keep hearing that Manuel is trying to fix the schedule to getting MSU back to the way it was but how is he supposed to accomplish that? Asking Mark Hollis pretty please is not going to work.
The only possibility I can think of that might make this happen is the transition from an 8 game conference schedule to a 9 where the schedule quirk takes it completely out of MSU's hands ... just like it was out of our hands when we were forced to go to East Lansing two years in a row because of the addition of Rutgers and Maryland to the B1G.
Out of curiosity, I went and looked at the other B1G teams schedule quirks because of Rutgers and Maryland, where teams had to play consecutive road games against an opponent in 2013 and 2014. This is what I found...
*INDIANA - Played @Michigan and @OSU
*MICHIGAN - Played @MSU
*MSU - Played at nobody consecutive years.
*OSU - Played at nobody consecutive years.
*PENN STATE - Played @Indiana
*ILLINOIS - Played @Nebraska
*IOWA - Played @Purdue and @Minnesota
*MINNESOTA - Played @Michigan
*NEBRASKA - Played at nobody consecutive years.
*NORTHWESTERN - Played @Iowa
*PURDUE - Played @Indiana
*WISCONSIN - Played @Iowa
Interestingly, it seems Indiana got screwed more than we did, having to play at Ann Arbor and Columbus two straight years. But they got Purdue at home both years. That was the only other rivalry in the conference that got effected ala UM/MSU. Also interesting that both our rivals didn't have to deal with this.
I'm still trying to figure out how this way was the only way. Did we get screwed because the two new members of the conference are in OUR division? Whatever the reason, that MSU game has got to be fixed.

|2 weeks 21 hours ago||In the 80's, the Independent||
It wasn't a completely different world for some teams.
In the 80's, the Independent teams used carefully crafted crappy scheduling to help them win national championships, or at least reach the national title game. In particular, the Miami Hurricanes. Miami had about two big games a year sandwiched between 8 cupcakes. Their 1983 championship team didn't play (or beat) a ranked team until the championship game. Their 87 championship team played one big game all year, their rivalry game against FSU.
Penn State made it to the title game and won in 86 on a schedule that included one ranked team; Alabama who went 10-3.
BYU won it all in 84, despite the fact we nearly beat them in the Holiday Bowl with our backup QB, after our season had gone to crap once we lost Harbaugh.
The common thing all these teams had were crap schedules where they had to get up about twice a year. And those two tough opponents were spread about 6-7 weeks apart. It wasn't like us who had to play Notre Dame on the road, come home and face #1 Miami the following week and then a difficult conference schedule.
Bo specifically addressed this issue in his book the year before his retirement. He said Big Ten teams will have to tone down these tough non-conference schedules if they want to stay in the national title hunt because the championship teams are padding their schedules with so/so competition. A few years later, when Penn State joined the Big Ten, he said Michigan needs to stop playing Notre Dame because that's too many difficult games in a season. Keep in mind, Notre Dame and Penn State were much better programs in the early 90s than they are now.

Good question. Out of curiosity, I looked up their stats against all other B1G opponents those same seasons. It's true that their offense has put up a lot of yards but only a couple teams have played worse defense against IU than we have during those seasons; Illinois twice, Purdue twice and Rutgers once. It's not good company.
2009 total yards:
Michigan (479), Ohio State (253), Illinois (490), Northwestern (313), Iowa (313), Wisconsin (393), Penn State (357), and Purdue (487).
2010 total yards:
Michigan (594), Ohio State (210), Illinois (293), Northwestern (373), Iowa (319), Wisconsin (315), Penn State (343), and Purdue (408) --- IU had by far their best offensive output against us
2013 total yards:
Michigan (572), Penn State (486), Michigan State (351), Minnesota (496), Illinois (650), Wisconsin (224), Ohio State (442), and Purdue (692)
2015 total yards:
Michigan (527), Ohio State (402), Penn State (234), Rutgers (627), Michigan State (389), Iowa (407), Maryland (555), and Purdue (659)
- Our game with them went to 2 overtimes last year, the number is a little higher. But it's not like the first 4 quarters went great from a defensive perspective.
- Indiana put up 442 yards against OSU in 2013 but only put 14 points on the scoreboard.
- I believe Indiana was playing their backup QB against Penn State last year
- In 2012, Indiana played OSU's 12-0 team to a 52-49 loss. They went 4-8 that year and they did not play Michigan.

That game has been part of an annoying trend of Indiana shredding our defense lately.
Pull out your puke buckets for these stats:
2009: 479 total yards (282 pass, 197 run)
2010: 594 total yards (506 pass, 88 run)
2013: 572 total yards (410 pass, 162 run)
2015: 527 total yards (220 pass, 307 run)
Our only "saving grace" performance against Indiana in the last several years was 2014, which involved holding their backup QB to 24 yards passing and giving up 167 yards on the ground. But that game may have been our one shining moment since the season had already gone to crap and Brady Hoke was a dead coach walking at that time.
I was kind of hoping the days of giving up 500+ yards to IU was over but then last year happened.

Wet blanket time. What nags me the most is that we have a long history of meh to decent seasons with a first year QB but nothing close to a national title contender.
I'm excluding the Hoke and RichRod years to when the football program was actually stable....
2004: Chad Henne (9-3)
2001: John Navarre (8-4)
2000: Drew Henson (9-3)
1998: Tom Brady (10-3)
1995: Scott Dreisbach/Brian Griese (9-4)
1993: Todd Collins (8-4)
1990: Elvis Grbac (9-3)

1984: Jim Harbaugh (3-1) then he breaks his arm
1981: Steve Smith (9-3)

Granted, you could look at almost all of those years and pull your hair out over the 'what if' moments. Grbac lost 3 games by a combined 6 points, Henson lost 3 by a combined 7 points, Navarre got screwed by Spartan Bob, Henne lost the Rose Bowl by a point on the final play, etc.

1994 Notre Dame (the game where Remy kicked the game winning FG.)
Trailing 17-10 in the 3rd quarter, we drive to the ND 27. On 2nd & 10, Todd Collins lobs a wide open pass to Biakabutuka who probably would have ran it in for the TD but the pass was a little too high.
On 3rd down, Gary Moeller calls the exact same play and it works to perfection. Biakabutuka catches it this time and is knocked out at the 4 yard line to set up a 1st & goal, which we would later score on to tie the game.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||My thoughts:I despise Notre||
I despise Notre Dame.
I hate their stupid undeserved contract with NBC because about 24 other teams has had a better record than them since they got it over two decades ago.
I hate their stupid ass homer announcers. (One year, they were playing horribly against Stanford and the NBC announcers blamed it on ND's players being too tired from studying for mid-terms that week. Apparently ND is the only school that's ever had mid-terms.)
I hate that the ACC got rid of their balls and allowed ND to be a "part time" member of their conference which is stupid as hell. ONLY Notre Dame. You're either a full conference member or you're not a conference member.
I hate Brian Kelly and his stupid purple face.
I hate Lou Holtz and his 20 straight years of national championship predictions after a 1-0 start.
I hated Carlyle Holiday leaving the ball behind on the 2 yard line and getting rewarded a TD. I hated the phantom pass interference on Ty Law. I hated the ref using an index card to see if Michigan had picked up a first down, among many stupid things that happened in South Bend.
And I really hated how they ended the series. Dave Brandon was an a*shole. I get that. But to sneak one more home game in for an uneven number of meetings and leave us no time to give them the finger and drop the 2013 game was a dick move. F*ck those guys.
With all that said......Michigan needs to play Notre Dame. There's too much history, tradition and close geography for them NOT to play. Even if it's every several years. That might be even better because we could still have future games with them and not have to sacrifice future games against new blood.

Now fast forward to present day and we have...this. He's got multiple championships under his belt and can buy...I mean "recruit" pretty much any player he wants, just as he's done for years. I could understand that mentality if other schools had been featured as much as we were...but they weren't. Over 50 different Michigan games had been featured on Classic when I made that list. The school with the next most game features was Notre Dame with 18. That's quite a difference.
Why so Michigan heavy? I graciously emailed Classic a list of 30 different Notre Dame losses that I thought would be a great contribution to the network but I never got a reply. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I know I'm being bitter and very silly but you just get burned out on seeing that many losses.
The ironic thing is, when Classic stopped showing old college football games, RichRod arrived and Michigan football immediately went to hell. So we were stuck with seeing horrible losses on a regular basis regardless.
|7 weeks 4 days ago||*sigh* I'm really exposing||
I'm really exposing my dorkness level here but around 2005-ish, I wrote down every single Michigan football game I remembered seeing replayed on Classic over the previous several years and our winning percentage was about 37%.
Sure, they showed the 2000 Orange Bowl, the 1998 Rose Bowl and they were very generous to us during OSU week with plenty of wins over them, mostly from the 80's/early 90's, but the rest of the time was doom, and that was by far the majority. Name any heartbreaking loss from the 80's, 90's and very early 2000's and they showed it. And I'm being serious when I say that. It's just that some losses were played much more than others, like Kordell Stewart or the index card game in South Bend.
If someone completely unknowledgeable about the history of football watched ESPN Classic between 1998 and 2006, they would assume Michigan was the Wake Forest of college football. It's why I started my YouTube account in '07, because I was sick of the constant replays of losses so I decided to upload every win I had even if it was 40 point win over Indiana from 30 years ago.

|8 weeks 2 days ago||Looking at the 2003 team, I||
Looking at the 2003 team, I feel a combination of heartbreak and nostalgia. Oregon was a meh team. Everything went right for them that day and every special teams disaster seemed to happen to us. The Ducks scored on a punt return, a blocked punt, and I think a fumble return. Yes, it's never easy to travel 2,000 miles to a hostile environment and play great but here's what happened to that Oregon team the four weeks after playing us; they lost 55-16, 17-13, 59-14 and 42-10. Two of those losses were to Arizona State and Washington, neither of which ended up qualifying for a bowl that year but they didn't break a sweat against Oregon.
The Iowa game was where Lloyd kept calling that funky punt. Beckman and Brandy openly questioned why he was continuing to do that because it looked like Iowa was getting closer and closer to it every time until they eventually blocked it. Navarre threw for 390 yards that game but there were several instances where he missed WIDE OPEN receivers. It was frustrating as hell and given that the game ended up being a 3 point loss, the 'what if' game replayed in my head all day.
The emotional roller coaster against Minnesota was just that. It was great to win but I don't know what happened to the run defense that night.
Then the last 6 weeks to end the regular season was amazing. Chris Perry's game against MSU was fun. The Purdue game, which I expected to be a close nerve wrecker ending up being a blowout. Jason Avant's catch against Northwestern in a blowout. And beating OSU in the 100th meeting. I guess that's one of the main reasons I look back at this season and smile. Because I was confident we were going to beat OSU even though they were ranked #3. That's how well the team was playing at that point. (I miss being confident.)
Then....the Rose Bowl. Braylon dropped a wide open bomb that would have easily scored to start the game. Then later a Navarre pass bounces directly up off of Braylon's heel and right into the hands of a USC defender giving them a first and goal. I'll never understand why the Rose Bowl hates us to THAT degree.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||That team was loaded at every||
That team was loaded at every offensive position. But the defense was extremely young. They were like night and day depending on where the game was played. At the Big House, they gave up 7, 7, 10, 0, 0 and 11 points. On the road, they gave up 23, 31, 32, 54, 26 and 28 in the bowl game.
We win against Northwestern if A-Train doesn't lose that first down fumble that would have run out the clock to end the game. The Purdue game is also won if they get one damn first down. 28 points in the 1st half, 3 in the second. If we're up big, that means Lloyd is taking his foot off the gas. This was one of many examples.
Despite those games that SHOULD have been wins, the defense was an extreme weak point. We were double digit favorites against Auburn in the bowl game and ended up winning by 3.

I know we've played a TON of classic Hollywood style games against them over the years but I'm kind of glad we're not playing them right now. Mostly because I got tired of their BS.
The way they're "sort of" a member (part-time member) of the ACC is stupid. The ACC should have told them you're either a full member or you're out. But the ACC lets them keep this strange sort of membership...because they're Notre Dame.
And the way they dropped the series with us to an uneven number so they could get one more home game in first? When that happened, I said we should have given them the finger and cancelled the 2013 game as well but by then, it was too late. Very calculating. Very douche bag like. F*ck those guys.
Oh, and the NBC TV contract that they have kept all these years has never felt right, given that about 24 other schools have a better record than them since they first got it. Because they spent about 90% of those years "getting back to glory." But they still get to keep it...because they're Notre Dame.
Meh. Again, f*ck those guys. This is a welcome break. I wouldn't mind playing a home and home with them once in a while but we no longer need to do the every year thing.

- Minnesota's QB Craig Curry led the conference in passing. His 72 yard TD pass against Michigan was his longest of the year....but it was the only points the Gophers put on the scoreboard against us the entire day.
- Tom Campana's 85 yard punt return for a TD against Michigan was the conference's longest. But that, also, was the only points OSU scored against us all day. As Bo would later say, "Their offense couldn't cross the street against us."
- MSU running back Eric Allen led the conference in scoring and averaged 6 yards a carry. When they played in East Lansing that year, Michigan outgained MSU on the ground 322-59. Eric Allen's claim to fame that day was a 1-yard TD run in the 4th quarter to make the final score look more respectable when MSU was down 24-7.
- There's a sideline rant by Indiana coach John Pont. His demeanor at the Big House was probably much worse because IU lost that day 61-7. Bo told the press after that game, "I hate to beat anybody that badly, especially someone I like."
- That's an impressive 66 yard touchdown Gary Danielson threw against us in the Purdue game. But why no footage of Dana Coin's game winning field goal with 40 seconds left in the game?
- Too bad there's not much footage of Michigan's season opener against Northwestern, who ended up finishing 2nd in the conference that year. UM's first touchdown was on an 18 yard scoring run by Bo Rather, made possible thanks to a key block by Jim Brandstatter.
- Boo for showing highlights of the 1 point loss to Stanford in the Rose Bowl to screw up a perfect season. I'm surprised the video didn't feature the fake punt that Stanford used for a critical first down. Bo said all the coaches were screaming, "They're going to fake! They're going to fake!" Stanford faked and STILL picked up the first down. *sigh*

I lean towards this even though it works out to an uneven 4/5 home and road games.
But, in my humble opinion, 14 teams is too many for a conference. 12 should be the max number. Sorry Maryland and Rutgers, you should have never joined.
More games against conference foes lessens the chance of teams getting off easy, as MSU did all time while I was growing up not having to play OSU about a dozen times and all of Barry Alvarez's Wisconsin Rose Bowl teams not having to play one of the top teams in conference every single time.
We now have a conference championship game but teams can still have an easy road to it as Iowa did last year, proving they had no business playing in one of the big bowl games. The Rose Bowl was over in the 1st quarter.
It will never be perfect but more games against conference competition is better.

It was annoying but at the time, I figured had Michigan been in that exact same position, we would have been selected as well. I'm not saying it's right but that's how it is.
But that's a lot of "what if" talk right now. We have a hell of November to try and survive and if we do, we'd still have the conference title game to attend to. That's a ton of difficult challenges to be completed before we can logically have these kind of discussions.

30 years after Victm A's story was when the Mike McQueary sighting happened, the only documentation of JoePa actually doing something, even if it was the bare minimum. Sandusky is retired at this point for two years but he's constantly a presence in the athletic buildings with his own keys. He is no doubt crossing paths with JoePa all the time. McQueery is also crossing paths or seeing him across the room constantly as he mentioned in past articles. Sandusky is continuing to bring young boys on campus and JoePa nor McQueary do or say a damn thing for ten years despite knowing what they know.
When exactly JoePa accepted that Sandusky was a deviant, we'll never know. But his continued silence from 2001 to 2011 only tells me he was concerned about himself, his reputation and PSU's reputation. He knew if he broke all contact with Sandusky and ordered him to stay away from campus, people would wonder why and start asking a lot of questions. The man is scum. He couldn't even fake interest in the well being of the victims by bringing them up when those thousands of students stood on his front lawn cheering for him.

The game was a nightmare (as most RichRod games were) but my seats were close enough that I had a perfect close up view of JoePa and he didn't bark any orders to players and coaches, he did nothing but pace for three straight hours on the sideline. He couldn't have been less involved in the game.
Even then, I thought it was stupid that he kept getting credit for wins when he was nothing but eye candy for the PSU fan base.

Well, yes. I should have phrased that better. A side disturbing fact to an already f*cked up situation.

Don Canham was frighteningly close to hiring him in 1968. He most likely would have brought Sandusky with him to Ann Arbor.
Now THAT is disturbing.

Confident talk coming from a team that was 7-6 last year.
You have bigger fish to fry. Like maybe this year, try to avoid needing wins over teams like Idaho and Jacksonville State to finish above .500

His iconic, "Good afternoon. And welcome to the University of Michigan's football stadium," can be heard here at 6:13 in....
That was from 1997.
Here is pressbox footage from the 89 Purdue game. No TV commentators but you can hear him, faintly, in the background...

It happens, unfortunately. When we beat USC and Rodney Peete in the 89 Rose Bowl, that was January 2nd.

The December bowl games are not as must see for me as they used to be. There's about 5,000 of them now and teams with losing records get invited to them just to fill the allotment. I didn't like it when 6-6 teams started becoming bowl eligible circa 2002 either. The majority of these bowls I don't bother to watch unless a B1G school is involved.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||In regards to his accuracy||
In regards to his accuracy issues, Cook did throw probably the most dropped interceptions of any QB I've ever seen. And he was bailed out many times through penalties as well...including at the big house last season where he threw a horrible pick but we were flagged for something...I think an offsides penalty.

I wish him all the happiness in the world but....damn. It's going to be painful as hell to see us play against him.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||You could almost (almost)||
You could almost (almost) make an argument that the 2013 Northwestern game was just as ugly as M00N. Considering Gardner threw about 7 dropped interceptions, 2 of which would have been pick sixes. The B1G broadcasters were dumbfounded that NU were dropping all these picks that were thrown right to them.
The only memorable thing about that game was the field goal unit just barely getting off the game tying kick in time, while the Northwestern president stood under the goal post frantically trying to convince himself it was no good.

The live game thread from when Trey Burke hit the shot against Kansas was fun.
The ten minutes leading up to it was, "This sucks." "The world sucks." "We're doing just enough to barely lose, GOD, this sucks." "Sucks, sucks, sucks!"
Then Burke hits the three...and pure joy was had by all.

He's a jackass. Sparty homerism aside, I had to stop listening to him because he never let his callers finish their points. He cuts them off every single time.
He was practically laughing his ass off on the radio over Harbaugh's first recruiting class last year on the heels of Hoke's firing.
And that voice....that mopey and dopey voice. I don't understand how even MSU fans can stand to listen to him talk.

They already started searching for dirt on him months ago when Sankey filed a FOIA on how much Harbaugh spends on air travel to visit recruits. It was some desperate attempt to try and find a violation. But they still posted the total online anyway.
I guess when SEC coaches visit recruits, they either bike or use uber.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||Never understood what the SEC||
Never understood what the SEC had to complain about. They'll still continue to throw wads of cash at excellent players and get plenty back on their return. It certainly didn't hurt Auburn when they "recruited" Cam Newton a few years ago.
This was going to continue and the media was going to slobber all over the conference regardless if there were camps or not.
