Hey man, you gotta get ranked low before you can get ranked high. I don't think anyone here is super amped about a #25 ranking as an endpoint, but probably more as a glimmer of hope for the possibility that exceeding expectations could put us in a nice spot.

Hey, it's understandable - people are afraid of rare occurrences, like shark attacks and lightning strikes. Plus, regardless of frequency, fear can be very personalized and arbitrary. I was never afraid of tackling somebody, but I had a speedy ground ball take a weird jump off an infield pebble and hit me square in the face when I was certain it was going into my glove. The result? A lasting hesitancy to scoopi up hard grounders. I knew it was silly, but what are you gonna do? Hard to wrestle your own reptile brain into logical servitude sometimes.
|13 weeks 2 days ago||If we were to rank "best"||
If we were to rank "best" seasons by which fan base enjoyed it most, I would go with Michigan number 1, because our guys are so dang likeable and we never saw this coming with McGary down. And we got to enjoy B1G competitiveness and ultimately victory for a significant period of time. I'd put Wisconsin at number 2 because they were INSANELY happy to make the final four - sure, having a good regular season is par for the course when you're Wisconsin, but deep tournament runs are rare for them. They were definitely partying their hats off. MSU comes in last because they don't know how to be happy unless they're conference/national champs. Otherwise they're just pitching a fit, crying about this or that, and generally pointing their shaking little finger at Michigan.
EDIT: Michigan was also the most fun to watch! Beautiful Belein basketball.
|13 weeks 5 days ago||It's not a valid measure of||
It's not a valid measure of correlation because Google casts a very loose net - it's awesome for finding the most relevant things and putting them at the top of your search results, but the sheer number of results can be influenced by many, many factors.
As someone already pointed out, there are more soccer games played around the world every year than there are football games. There are also a lot more soccer fans around the world. They generate content and post it on the internet, where it becomes searchable by Google. No matter what amount of actual diving happens in soccer games, the subsequent discussion vastly amplifies the coincidence of the terms. Additionally, a truckload of variance is introduced when you consider the diversity of search terms you could use for one topic - maybe instead of "diving", you chose "flopping" or "faking"? What if you searched "soccer" instead of "European football?" Answer: the numbers change. A lot.
Plus, you're assuming that any coincidence of the terms is evidence of a positive association, which is erroneous. If someone typed the sentence "There was very little diving in last night's soccer match" onto a blog somewhere, then Google would see "DIVING" and "SOCCER", put that result into a giant pile with millions of others, and hand it to you, who says "SEE? LOOK. TOLD YOU SO." It's too opaque. While the number of search results is a clean, simple number, what actually goes into creating it is too ambiguous and complex to be reliably interpreted.
|13 weeks 6 days ago||Actually, according to the||
Actually, according to the good people at Google, the number of hits returned is not a scientifically valid measure of correlation between two search terms. I know this because that's what they personally told me when I asked permission to use Google Scholar in exactly that way when I was writing a program to automatically perform thousands of searches simultaneously to generate sets of gene-disease associations for a bioinformatics project.

In contrast to 'pretending' anything about magnitude, my use of gifs was to illustrate how poorly isolated moments are able to characterize a sport in any quantitative way.
To keep things quantitative, however, my real claim is absolute, rather than relative. I think football is cooler and features less flopping (relative), but there is greater than zero to like about soccer (absolute). The existence of amazing soccer highlights proves that pure moments exist.

I too think football is way more fun to watch than soccer. However, it would be simplistic to paint soccer as merely a bunch of actors flopping around. Let's not forget that soccer does feature some incredible feats of athleticism and teamwork:
And even our beloved football is not free from sin:
Again, I think football is 1000x better than soccer. But soccer can still be pretty cool, too.
|14 weeks 3 days ago||Before the game against||
Before the game against Kentucky, I knew there were two scenarios in which I would feel really upset about a loss. (1) We blow a 20-point lead in the second half. (2) We get blown straight out of the building and it looks like we don't belong on the court with those guys.
In scenario 1, I would have had a tough time not feeling like we were the better team but we collapsed. I would have felt like we stumbled. In scenario 2, I would have had doubts about the fundamental quality of the team, and maybe I would have felt bad because we weren't as good as I believed.
The way we lost is the best way to lose - we did great, and we were overcome by a slightly superior combination of effort, planning, talent, and athleticism. We are as good as I hoped we were, I love the team, but we just got outplayed. Hard to stay mad like that. That's going out like a warrior, you know? And the optimism for the future certainly helps.
|14 weeks 6 days ago||What about me? I attended a||
What about me? I attended a small college in Michigan, but my career was launched in earnest when I became a lab technician at UM in the department of MCDB. That experience enabled me to enter a PhD program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In a few weeks, I am going to earn my doctorate and take a postdoctoral position, perhaps at another Big Ten university. What am I - a Wolverine, a Badger, or something yet to be determined? The line you've drawn doesn't hold as fast as you seem to think. There are complexities to sports allegiances and group memberships that you're neglecting.
No matter what institution I am affiliated with at any given time, I certainly feel that I am a Wolverine when it comes to sports. I grew up that way, and UM will always be my first love. Perhaps that's where you need to set an endpoint to your exclusivity - sure, you're an academic Michigan Wolverine by definition, but athletic fandom is and should be open to the public.
|15 weeks 6 days ago||"If you take the revenue out||
"If you take the revenue out ..."
That's the thing that will never happen. NCAA athletes are a very heterogenous population - some of them have to overcome greater competition than others to earn a spot on the team, some of them put in more practice hours per week than others, perhaps some of them get more academic support than others, they all face very different sets of challenges and responsibilities ... and yes, some of them are more directly involved with the financial success of your athletic department. The one thing that ties them all together is their status as NCAA athletes. How strong of a link is that? Is it strong enough to warrant equal pay despite all the other factors? I would suggest that maybe it's not.
I do think you've made a lot of good points, just this one doesn't make that much sense to me.
|15 weeks 6 days ago||It seems that you've based||
It seems that you've based your equal pay idea on an anology in the business world (the Microsoft thing). Just because Microsoft does it one way doesn't mean that's the right way or the only way, does it? So they pay all their programmers the same. What about a different company? In many fields (including my own), your pay is based on your accomplishments and performance - not effort. Even employees who hold the same position can be paid differently based on how well they do and what they're worth to the company. Your adherence to an equal pay model as an example of how business works in the "real world" seems arbitrary.

What? Your words, they hurt me. I am not siding with anybody here. If anything, there is a trace of derision in my comment aimed at the university because I implied that they'd rather not take any punitive action against football players if they aren't compelled to. As far as 'sympathies' and 'small print', I choose not to ascribe such emotionally-laden connotations to a complicated matter which I aim to treat as logically as possible. I think that's ok. The only language Brandon and the athletic department speak is money. Refusal to spend your hard-earned money doesn't say "I don't love my football team" - it says "I'm not satisfied with my athletic department's ways". And if someone chastises you for being not a good enough fan because the team "isn't worth enough to you" to go to the games, that's bullshit because people don't have unlimited money. "Worth it" is not the same to a broke-ass PhD student as it is for a 45 year-old successful lawyer/plumber/what-have-you. You want Brandon to listen, but the only way to speak to him is by pulling your financial support - NOT your fandom.

I agree wholeheartedly. I know that the technical obstacles of getting the moderation system healthy again are undoubtedly more complex than I can imagine, but for me it's actually been a large enough detriment to my enjoyment of this community that I have allowed myself to become only tenuously attached to the discussions of the board.
I know people sometimes criticize the groupthink that the blog demonstrates and decry our moderation of contrary opinions as an infringement on thought diversity, but I believe this period of non-moderation is compelling evidence that such diversity is not as valuable as we would have liked to believe - instead, it's generally non-constructive negativity. And it does indeed set a precedent where trolling becomes accepted, and trolls coalesce like wildfire on a parched California chaparral.
I still eat up the front page content, but it's no longer worth the time and effort that it takes to sift through +200 comments for thoughtful dialogue. I'm not abandoning the blog, but I'm certainly distanced for the time being. I'll be back later.

I don't quite agree with tipping the chart on its corner and equating up-ness to goodness. Firstly, notice that the intervals on the defensive F/+ axis are larger than those on the offensive F/+ axis - this effectively weights defense disproportionately, because distance along that axis contributes more to vertical distance when tilted.
I would propose using a geometric mean of offensive and defensive F/+, which does a better job of average products - think of the position on the chart as a two dimensional product of offensive and defensive F/+. In order to do this, however, you'd have to convert the F/+ scales to be exclusively positive. You could do this by subtracting the minimum to normalize all values positively, but I'm not sure if this corrupts the original meaning of F/+ because I am dumb and don't know anything about it.

I spent six months in Australia, which was like 100x swearing - but almost all of it was casual. A stranger at the bus stop would remark on what a "bloody nice f***ing day" it was, you know? And the kind of neat side effect of it all was that people just don't get offended by swear words, even when they're used in anger. It sort of takes the edge off actual confrontations, because those words aren't to be taken personally. It was pretty different and interesting. Kind of like you day, it reminded me of the dialogue in movies set in Boston.

|37 weeks 9 hours ago||I'll add another theory that||
I'll add another theory that is not mutually exclusive to the societal class origin concept - we have lots of words that mean the same thing, right? I think, for a given set of meaningfully redundant words, they vary in numerous attributes - some are more casual or more formal ("hey" vs. "salutations"), more dramatic or more subtle ("smashed" vs. "hit"), more esoteric or more mainstream ("brachiating" vs. "swinging with one's arms"). We need them to have different connotations because when we communicate, we're not just transmitting information; we're also imbuing the information with how we feel about it.
In the same way, I would propose that we need words commonly agreed to be harsh and severe so that we can use them to show that we are extremely angry and intending to offend. Consequently, I'd argue that swear words are offensive because that's what they were made to do - offend. We have strayed from this original function by overusing swear words when we're really not mad, when we're just calmly talking about regular things. I'm not saying this is a bad thing - I enjoy casual swearing, and I am somewhat proud of the combos I've strung together in my time.
But I don't think it's totally nonsensical for one word to be offensive while another word that means the same thing isn't. And that's why.
TL;DR - Totally unscientific conjecturing that swear words for literally invented with the purpose of being offensive.

I don't know if our game threads pick up steam as the season progresses, but if that's the case, we could have had a larger sheer volume of comments in the PSU thread (compared to say, Notre Dame), which could inflate the counts of shits and fucks a little bit. Maybe a proportional measure that tells us what percent of the thread's comments were sucks and asses might give a truer reflection of "mood?"

It takes a step back to put things in a bit of historical context, shows why we love our coach so much, then explains the present frustrations. I don't think it's meant to be original analysis by any means, but I do think it captures the current state of affairs nicely. Also, it has pictures!

Well, look - you might think calling it a "road win" is appropriate because Michigan won "on the road." However, Virginia Tech was also on the road (New Orleans isn't particularly close to either school). Therefore, this neutral site game didn't offer a home field advantage to either team , which is what I would consider the paramount challenge of playing on the road. So it's entirely an issue of semantics, but in my mind there's no question that beating the Hokies in this neutral site game was a different animal than beating someone on their own turf.

Some games require skill or ability, rather than sheer strength or speed (what we typically think of as "athleticism"). For instance, archery requires an intense amount of coordination, control, and carefully practiced skill. But you may not think of an archer as an "athlete." So, I think what we're looking at is a division between physical games that are primarily games of skill, and physical games that are primarily competitions of power. Driving racecars is clearly a physical activity, but the strength component is pretty minimal. I'd have to categorize it similarly to archery or bowling, but with an added dimension of engineering fused to it.

|49 weeks 17 hours ago||The thing about ranking teams||
The thing about ranking teams week to week, the way we do, is that we rely on a set of believed probabilities that we've built from prior evidence. This is a Bayesian approach to statistics, in which evidential probabilities are continuously updated with new data. It's very good for lots of applications, but the one thing that really impacts the long-term functioning of such a process is the initial set of probabilities we feed into the system. Therefore, it's important that these initial probabilities - built from evidence - come close to capturing the true probabilities of reality.
I think a fair few people would argue that, in college football, the evidence we have in the preseason with wich to form a quality set of expectations is too scarce and too poor to accomplish such a feat. It's fine to form opinions, but remember that these opinions become reality, statistically, when our Bayesian machine is set in motion and grabs onto them.
An alternative to the current system would be to suspend the generation of expected probabilities for use in meaningful rankings until more data has been collected. Perhaps you postpone the release of rankings until three games have been played - then you have a greater volume of more applicable evidence with which to rank teams. If Notre Dame shits the bed in two of their first three because they actually suck, the teams that beat them early on don't get rocketed to the top of the BCS undeservedly. Similarly, if lower-tier SEC teams don't fare so well in their non-conference games, LSU and Georgia won't be given platinum medals for curb stomping them just because they're SEC teams.
As you pointed out, it would be impossible to prohibit conjecturing in the early weeks. But it would be nice if there was a designated point in the season when we take a retrospective look at some real data, get some context, and smooth out the noise to form a more perfect basis for mid and late-season rankings. Otherwise, it is as they say: "garbage in, garbage out."

As an exploration of thought, what consitutes a "good" or "bad" fan? What makes one fan "better" than another? Is someone who is "more" of a fan a "better" fan? I think a good fan is simply one who is loyal to their team and shares in the emotions of victory and defeat. You could say that someone else is "more of a fan" if they delve into the depth charts, recruiting, coaching strategy, etc. But I don't think that really makes them "better" in any actual sense - they're not digging into the excesses of sports nerddom for anybody's benefit but their own, right? They are just one person in the stands on game day, and they can't cheer any louder than the next person. Sure, they can discuss the intricacies of two tight end formations on an internet message board, but again ... once it's football saturday, who cares? Now you know I wouldn't argue that there is no value in being a sports nerd, or a super fan or whatever (I mean ... here I am), but one part of enjoying being a fan is sharing the experience with others. You aren't going to be a good fan by being elitist and dividing yourself from others, you'll only be missing out.
TL;DR - don't be a turd.

I went to Hope over Michigan as well. I was motivated partly by academics, and partly by personal preference. Academically, Hope is a super successful launching point for pre-med students. Many of my classmates went on to Michigan medical/dental school, and I thought maybe I wanted to do the same. As for personal preference, I just really liked the small class sizes, the personal atmosphere, and the direct contact I had with my professors. The small-scale thing is not for everybody, but I really made us of their wisdom and learned a lot about being an independent scientist. Oh, as it turns out, Hope is really big into undergraduate research. And I don't mean like you work in a big lab full of grads and post docs doing menial tasks for them - the entire system is designed to make sure you have your own project, you're the one calling the shots, coming up with ideas, etc. You're actually the most important person they have. So I fell in love with the lab, and now I'm closing in on a PhD in neuroscience. I still keep in touch with my professors at Hope via email, they want to know how I'm doing. I may even go back to Holland and give a seminar talk on my work in the near future. Basically, it worked out really well for me.

That article seems to have had quite the impact. OSU has had TONS of success as of late, which means that at least half of any criticism directed at them can be dismissed as mere jealousy. However, there has been SO much STRONG evidence laid against them lately indicating that their sporting culture is offensively obsessive and detrimental that I do believe it has merit. My null hypothesis is that Ohioans are really no different than us - they are so similar, right? - but I am willing to be swayed, and I do feel swayed. I truly think they're being douches.

While I agree with you - and actually think it's a really interesting psychological phenomenon that we have this obsession with guessing the future - I've had to accept that predictions are like 75% of what sports media does when their sport isn't presently happening. I know, I know ... "What good is predicting things anyway? All that matters is the true outcome." Yeah, but ... you try and stop them. It's like telling someone to stop blinking. If you think about your sport at all, it's natural to build hypothetical scenarios. Next you're weighing the relative likelihoods of them actually happening. And that finally leads to predictions. I think that NOT doing so takes a measured degree of conscious restraint.

And anyway, they have been pretty good at football lately, so I don't really feel like pretending that hasn't bothered me. We didn't always make the shot, but by pulling Withey towards the perimeter, it allowed McGary to go all McGary in the paint. Which, as we know, was huge. |1 year 18 weeks ago||Easy ... PLoS ONE was||
Easy ... PLoS ONE was designed as an open access journal which evaluates submissions on quality of work alone, not the "hotness" of the topic. That's why it's different from journals such as Nature or Science, which have high impact factors. The trade-off is that these journals can be almost tabloid in nature - the kind of articles that get published here are cutting edge, but unreplicated. A decent proportion of these high impact studies wash out as nothing of substance - just something that garners a lot of attention at first blush.
Additionally, PLoS has other "versions" of itself - such as PLoS Genetics & PLoS Biology. PLoS Biology is actually a very prestigious journal with a high impact factor - but ironically, they are obligated to not advertise that fact based on their founding philosophy that impact factor is not the alpha & omega of publication.
I should also admit that I'm a big proponent of open access scientific formats, & I think it's particularly favorable for large scale studies that use a high volume of data because there are no length restrictions or limitations on how the data can be shared with the scientific community.
My two cents.

Firstly, Seth did not do the analysis - that was done by MaizeNBlueInDC. So if you have a problem with total number of recruits as a metric, you're barking up the wrong tree. Secondly, I'd argue that it is in fact a meaningful number. There is a finite number of quality recruits in the nation - if the SEC is going all hungry hungry hippos on them, I'm interested in the large scale effects on the talent pool, not just an average performance by teams in the conference.
Secondly, dinging someone for not labeling their axes is the cheapest, easiest way to act like you know something about graphical representation. Point it out & ask for clarification if you're genuinely confused, but don't be a condescending douche. Just don't.
