First off, this is bad list in so many ways. But to me it seems about right for Hoke AS OF NOW. The future looks bright, but if we set aside our biases, he still has some unimpressive stats and has A LOT still to prove on the field before we can call him elite.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||I know he is only a freshman...||
...but this "mixtape" reminds a lot of Brett Petway's junior/senior high school highlights. And Brett turned out to be an average at best college athlete. Granted, it didn't help that he was coached by Amaker.
He's got a lot of potential and a long way to go. I'll be curious to see what happens to him in the coming years.

In spite of the events the past week, Boston should be so lucky.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||We have been through this...||
....about 12 years ago. Right after 911, all eyes were on Michigan Stadium since it would be housing the largest event since the 911 attacks. IIRC, we didn't even postpone the game. ...gets you 20 points. Being a non-alum and donating just $500 (which as you mentioned gets you 5 points) is not going to cut it. I know lots of alum who have donated more than $500 and have not gotten tickets. You can certainly overcome not being an alum by...donating more.
Just trying to level set the poster.

|5 weeks 2 days ago||This year...||
...no chance. The deadline for donations to be considered for this years tickets was a few weeks ago. Now, next year MAY be a different story. Even if you are an alum, $500 alone is not going to cut it. I would call and nicely ask what the point cut off was this year. It doesn't mean it will be the same next year, but will provide some insight. Also, if your employer matches charitable donations (like mine does), do not hesitate to use this method. It worked for me!

|9 weeks 1 day ago||I know this may toe the line a bit...||
...with the no politics rule, but here it goes. This is probably a good move for Obama. Many studies suggest that many to most people don't really vote on the issues at hand. This was especially true during the past 2 elections. Instead, they vote on who they like best. As a proud Libertarian, I don't agree with most of Obama's policies (or a Republican's for that matter), but I can definitely say he has a very likeable personality.
Doing these brakets only ups this quotient.
|9 weeks 2 days ago||No||
"And if you're really feel worse about losing to App State than you feel good about winning the only National Championship in most of our lifetimes, and would trade one for the other, your priorities are really skewed."
This is not what I said. I said losing record against OSU AND losing to ASU trump the NC (not just losing to ASU alone like your statement alludes to). I may be in the minority, but I would trade the NC for a recent winning record against OSU and not losing to ASU. We as Michigan fans all know how we like to categorize the NC as "mythical" and that our goal is winning the B10 first and foremost. And because of our recent record against OSU and that damn ASU game we are a laughing stock to our rivals, and using the "well, we won the NC 16 years ago" meme doesn't do a lick anymore to mitigate that.
LC did some great things off the field, but probably no different than most coaches. But on the field, he did less with more, was too loyal to a fault, couldn't beat his main rival consistent basis. He was a good (not great or elite coach) at best.
|9 weeks 2 days ago||Wait?! What?||
The NC was sweet no doubt, but I don't think it trumps having a losing record against OSU or that ASU loss. Bo never won a NC, but he kept us respectable. LC eventually made us look like fools.
|9 weeks 2 days ago||What?!||
Having a losing a record against OSU (especially in the manner Lloyd accomplished this) and being responsible for the most embarrassing loss in school history is enough trump the 1/2 NC we got in 1997 (with someone else's recruits mind you)

|12 weeks 6 days ago||I agree...||
...with what you are saying for the most. Contextually speaking, the manner in which the OP present his/her post says that UM discriminates against veterans (meaning all veterans). Based on the anecdotes of many former veteran posters on this board, its seems that this is not the case (in fact quite the opposite) and that this is somewhat of an oversight that can be fixed. Still no need to through around the word discriminate in this case.
Before I forget, for those who have served this country, thanks a ton. Always appreciated.
|12 weeks 6 days ago||Agreed!||
I have this conversation about this with many others, and there is a lot of interesting factoids (unverified):
1. College enrollment has only gone up about 7% (as % of the population) over the past ~50 years.
2. Its much easier to get access to private (i.e. scholarships) or public funds (i.e. student loans) these days. It took me about 30 minutes to get my grad school loan to Michigan.
2. College tuition as % of per capita GDP has stayed pretty steady. HOWEVA, not for big brand schools.
The laws of demand are in full affect for big brand schools, but the supply for available schools are increasing. Therefore, college is fully available at a reasonable cost, you just have to go to somewhere other than the Michigans of the world.
|12 weeks 6 days ago||This sucks for him...||
...but did he really need to flash the "discrimination" card. Seems fairly isolated and correctable. Next up, Michigan "discriminates" against sub-3.0 GPA, no national honor society member, JV sports playing, couldn't find a date for prom high school senior.
I can just see it in front of the Michigan Union:
Rally Leader: "WHAT DO WE WANT?!"
Rally: "EQUALITY FOR AVERAGE STUDENTS!"
Rally Leader: "WHEN DO WE WANT IT?!"
|12 weeks 6 days ago||Relax...||

|13 weeks 5 days ago||Yea. Agreed!||
The world can't afford to lose any more chelating agents.
|14 weeks 2 days ago||On your No.3 point||
Background, history, etc should have no impact or bearing on present day discrimination. Presenting an Irsh person as a short red-haired rapscallion in a green suit is flat out racist and VERY offensive to a lot of Irish. But what you are saying is because they were only partially discriminated (NINA for example), that they are just going to have to sit back and deal with it.
Discrimination is discrimination and should be equally intolerable regardless of history.

|19 weeks 6 days ago||Question?||
So you think we are at the point where we can challenge our main objective of winning the B10? I say this because it gives me pause that our objective is to win the B10, and not necessarily the NC. Don't get me wrong, winning the B10 is an achievement, but its not even close compared to a NC. You can't tell me that you wouldn't be disappointed in a season that we lost all our non-conference games, but won the B10.
Times have changed and Bo's mantra of winning B10 championships as our main goal should be put to rest. This is Michigan fergodsakes, he should be shooting for NCs. Plain and simple.
|19 weeks 6 days ago||Oh Really?||
From the story that he told (and perhaps I missed something in the thread), there was no indication that race played a role in in the restaurant's decision to not seat them. It was assumed that because the white people got what they wanted (they got to sit and eat) and the non-white people didn't (the restaurant turned them away), then racial profiling was probably the reason for this. Without understanding the full context of the situation, these untelligent assumptions do nothing but harm to the already shaky relationships between people of all races.
What's more, I think it can be construed that he racially profiled the white people.

|21 weeks 6 days ago||Unless you've haven't seen...||
...Blades of Glory, then mind bottling makes perfect sense.
|22 weeks 7 hours ago||They have something like 39 varsity sports||
We have 27. And most schools are in ~20 range. This leads OSU to lower (if any) profit. Profit (and risk) drive value in DCF model, which I'm sure Forbes uses some derivation thereof to determine their rankings.
|22 weeks 8 hours ago||So yea...||
...making list is not an exact science, but it seems like an OK list to me. If I was to put Denard on the list is would be towards the back. He certainly WAS exciting in previous years, but this year he has been fairly absent in this category (with a few exceptions). In fact, he probably has had more bone-headed plays than exciting plays. With that, I hope to see Denard very little at QB in the bowl game because, to be quite frank, he does not put us in the best position to win.
|22 weeks 1 day ago||But Hoke's status...||

|23 weeks 4 hours ago||What would add more value to this...||
....is knowing the amount of varsity athletic programs it subsidizes. That way you can tell what you are spending and making on a per team basis. See below (best performers bolded):
Team: #of teams, Rev/team, Exp/team, Profit/team
Texas: 20 teams, $5.2M, $1.3M, $3.9M
Michigan: 27 teams, $3.2M, $0.9M, $2.3M
Georgia: 19 teams, $3.9M, $1.2M, $2.8M
Florida: 19 teams, $3.9M, $1.2M, $2.7M
Alabama: 21 teams, $3.9M, $1.8M, $2.1M
LSU: 14 teams, $4.9M, $1.7M, $3.2
Auburn: 19 teams, $4.1M, $1.8M, $2.3M
Notre Dame: 23 teams, $3.0M, $1.1M, $1.9M
Arkansas: 19 teams, $3.4M, $1.3M, $2.1M
Nebrasksa: 21 teams, $2.6M, $1.0M, $1.7M
For good measure, OSU: 39 teams! This actually explains a lot.

|23 weeks 3 days ago||I was mostly being sarcastic...||

|23 weeks 6 days ago||Come to Penn State!||
Oh wait. Wrong video :(
|23 weeks 6 days ago||Why does...||
...Brady Hoke and Urban Meyer look the same as they would without the special effects?
|24 weeks 1 day ago||Ding ding!||
Was my hint that obvious? :)
|24 weeks 1 day ago||This has nothing to do with RR or any previous coach...||
...and everything to do with unrealized expecations.
As a point of reference, who am I?:
I took over coaching a well known and tradition-laden college football program after the previous coach whose underwhelming recruiting and coaching got him fired after 3 years. In my first 2 years at the helm, I compiled a 19-6 record, including 2 BCS berths and a national coach of the year award. My next 3 years I went, 3-9, 7-6, and 6-6. I was then fired. Who am I? (hint: I have a FUPA)
Again, I will reiterate. This has absolutely nothing to do with RR and I never once mentioned it in my post. Hoke has done well thus far (although this season was not great by any means), but he far from meeting expectations of this program, and we should probably wait until he hopefully does so before we determine if it was a good hire.

Because we played a good game (although no points in the second half, blegch). But, I will stand by my prediction after 5 years of hoke:
|25 weeks 5 days ago||Um no.||
As a proud libertarian, let free speech reign. I never once slighted those who think that Hoke is our savior. However, because I have an opinion that is contrary to others, makes me less of a Michigan fan. I probably support the school more than most.
|25 weeks 5 days ago||You spelt douche wrong.||

|25 weeks 5 days ago||Hi||
I'm WindyCityBlue. Born in Detroit but lived most if my life in Chicago. I have 2 degrees from Michigan and am michigan football season ticket holder. I love Michigan football, but think it fully plausible to both support the team and not have faith in the coaching staff. (Or else we'd have no supporters from the RR era)
|25 weeks 5 days ago||Oh boo-hoo||
Someone with a differing opinion than you. I think you should put Cuba in front of your name because you obviously only go with the masses and can't think for yourself.
|25 weeks 5 days ago||Let me be clear||
I don't think he will be considered a disappointment tomorrow, he has a long way to go before that happens. But I think after tomorrow's game, it will start a long road of disappointing seasons.
|25 weeks 5 days ago||I will gladly stop by to eat crow if needed.||
The question is: will you?
|25 weeks 5 days ago||I wish||
Because it will dull the pain that will be inflicted on us tomorrow.
|25 weeks 5 days ago||Thanks!||
But this is not a party.
Sorry to disappoint, but its true. Hoke is a good, not elite coach.
|25 weeks 5 days ago||Sorry guys...||
...we're going to get curb stomped (lose by at least 2 TDs) because Hoke is clueless when preparing for good teams.
It will be bad, and it will be the start of some serious momentum of doubt that Hoke with keep his job after 5 years.
|25 weeks 6 days ago||Well.||
Not much "pro-Michigan" in that area. But Palmers in LaGrange will have plenty of tvs and will play the sound for the game if you get there early enough and request it. I have done that a few times. They have even done this when Illinois is playing.

|28 weeks 2 days ago||Yea...||
...this might be "too OT" for the football season, but there have been plenty of other OT posts that have stuck (i.e. Da'quan the block is hot), and this seems like a worthy post.
I have never bought a deck and therefore have no idea what they should costs, but I would hope that this is cheaper (maybe much cheaper) that an equivalent cement/wood deck. If so, then I think you might be well positioned in certain markets as people are still looking for cheaper alternatives (especially in this economy). Therefore, you should spenmd some considerable time identifying your target market.
The biggest question for me would be around quality. If you can demonstrate marginal quality value compared to typical decks then it would go a long way (think IKEA furniture vs Resoration Hardware furniture). The variables of quality for this would be:
1. Deck "even-ness". How easy is to make the deck even? A difference in a 0.5 cm would be enough to cause a tripping hazard between slabs
2. Material integrity. How sturdy is the deck in the middle of the slab?
I could go on, but this what I have for now.
|29 weeks 5 hours ago||This is an interesting thought||
Paterno's death might be the only thing that saved whatever reputation he had left. While he certainly was under intense scrutiny for his actions, he still had a sizable fanbase who were "behind" him. However, if he had lived, imagine seeing Paterno being carted off in handcuffs or wearing prison orange. Very weird, but with that old man scowl he often had, he might of actually fit the part.

|29 weeks 4 days ago||It's called coaching...||
...you know, that thing you do when you need to get players to play better. You watch tape with them and practice working on deficiencies. Sounds novel, right? Because I don't what Borges (and to certain extent Hoke) does to improve the offensive play.
|29 weeks 4 days ago||[gif of Hoke's balls in Sten Carlson mouth]||
Hope you enjoy being Hoke's gimp.
|29 weeks 4 days ago||Because Hoke is the coach||
He is accountable for EVERYTHING with the team. He had piss poor preparation for our QB position. Hoke = joke
|29 weeks 4 days ago||So I guess the objective is to win the big Ten||
Therefore Hoke is a failure 2 years in a row.
|29 weeks 4 days ago||No you fucking idiot||
We supposedly have these "brilliant" coaches that are second to only God. Yet, they have the complete lack of ability to prepare a contingency plan at QB - the most important position on the field. Given that DR has had his fair share of getting dinged-up, it's a travesty these so called coaches didn't properly prepare.
|29 weeks 4 days ago||Yes||
When you can't coach players, I don't care how highly rated the class is
|29 weeks 4 days ago||Hoke is a joke||

But I had a chance to have scotch and cigars with Shaun Gayle at a cigar bar here in Chicago. He went to Ohio as a DB and played for the Bears for about 10 years. Great guy, well spoken and down to earth - nothing like I thought I would out of a buckeye. First off, he thinks the spread is a shit offense and is pissed that Ohio is running it. More relevantly, apparently the powers that be at Ohio are coming down really hard on Fickell, and some of it is being blamed on Urban for the foes on defense. The meeting may be a reaction to all this guff.

I have much respect for ND, but this should help Michigan even out those lop-sided home/away schedules.
The only way this becomes a detriment to us is if:
1. We don't find someone equal or better to play as a replacement
2. We don't properly schedule a home/home series to avoid having a year where all big games are away

...that makes sense.
1. Women who are raised and trained to be a college (or pro) athlete vs someone who was not (man or woman). While I'm quite athletic, I was not raised or trained to be a college or pro athlete. So are you willing to admit baseball players are not as good of athletes as football players?
2. "It's only because men have dominated elite sport for so long that we think of an athletic body as masculine." Yea, I'll put on make-up and wear a blouse, but don't call me feminine. It's just that woman predominately wear make-up and blouses. If you think that some (if not many) of these weighlifter women don't look masculine, you are seriously blind.

First off, never said equal ability. Read it again
Second, you say "unacceptable rough physical treatment by the opposite sex is absolutely justifiable". Would you say this if the man was physically inferior to a woman and she attacked him? Doubt it.
I'll say it again, no excuse for voilence against anyone equally.
|40 weeks 2 hours ago||Apparently not if you are woman...||
...cuz if a woman (with equal rights as man) clubbed a man (even if the man was physically superior or not) in the head, no one what really give a shit.
There is no excuse for violence against women...and men, and children equally.
|40 weeks 5 hours ago||So let me get this straight...||
....the women's lib movement, including title IX initiatives, demanded that women get equal rights as men, get equal amount of varsity sports as men, etc etc. Yet, woman cannot be (or do not want to be) treated like men in aggressive situations, not as physically strong (i.e. not as athletic), etc etc. Seems women are having their cake and get to eat it too.

|41 weeks 2 days ago||I do think that's impressive...||
...but RR has I think 5 COY awards (2 in the BE, which is > MAC & MWC). I don't think that you can reasonably deny that RR is still a more decorated coach than Hoke at this point. And that's no knock on Hoke, I think he will surpass RR in due time.
My reply was to the poster who said, "Honestly though, he's just not a good football coach. Good to great scheme, Yes definately. A good football coach who knows how to use personnel, no absolutely not" If he thinks that, then I want to know what he thinks of Hoke because his tangibles are not quite to the level of RR.
|41 weeks 2 days ago||If RR is not a good coach in your mind...||
...then what was Hoke before he came to Michigan? RR accomplished far more that Hoke had up the point of coaching Michigan (RR probably still has).
RR is a great coach who just didn't fit in here.

No. Just no. Your "research" may explain why he left his alma mater for a better conference, but it has little to do with why he had a sub-par record or any of the other factors that left many people upset by the hire. No Hoke-hater was saying, "why did we hire this guy?! I mean look...he left Ball St for SDSU fergodsakes!!"
|42 weeks 7 hours ago||Yea...||
...I'm that idiot. I think the boot had something to do with it.
|42 weeks 11 hours ago||I think Hoke demonstrated some success...||
...before joining Michigan. While winning COY in the MAC and MWC is good, these are non-BSC conferences (because have a poor overall record is mitigate by the fact they were earned in non-BSC conferences, right?). The only people in recent history that have been a successful and elite coach that receieved either one of these awards are Urban Meyer (MAC & MWC), Frank Solich (MAC, but this was after his days at Nebraska), and Gary Patterson (maybe). Not the greatest ilk.
"When we hired him, many analysts thought it was a home run right off the bat. This website is about the only place that wrote him off. " Um no. While he was certainly considered a good coach at lower levels, this hire was a head-scratcher to most analyst at the time of hire. Not to mention rival websites that laughed their ass off at the hire.
I think Brian really did his homework and based his desision on what he knew at that time. It really looked like an underwelming hire and that if he wasn't a Michigan Man he wouldn't even be considered. And that's OK. Its reasonable to be wrong about the hire and admit it (Brian) or be cautious about anointing Hoke based on one year (me).
|42 weeks 12 hours ago||Yea...||
...that 1999 team could rival the 2011 team in terms of suckage. I don't know enough about those other OSU teams.
|42 weeks 23 hours ago||First off...||
...I'm not necessarily concerned about what Hoke will do at the helm, just curious to see what he does when things get bad. I'm also not going to determine if Hoke was a good hire or not with an N=1.
Also, there is a high correlation between being successful at a previous position and success a future position in the same field. Football coaches specifically, the vast majority of the great coaches at big time programs were successful coaches at smaller less known schools. They moved up this ladder because they demonstrated success. A lot of times this success is measured by W&Ls (admittedly not the greatest indicator).
One could ask, if Hoke was so good at "turning around" Ball St, then why did he leave to go to an equally moribund program? Does he like turning progarms around? Did he just want better weather? Why did bigger programs not lure him? I don't know.
Hoke's climb to the head coach of the greatest football program ever is exception to the rule - truly unprecedented. And because of this, its hard for me to determine what will happen next.
|42 weeks 1 day ago||I don't doubt the abilities of Hoke...||
...or the rest of his staff. But Borges and Mattison fall under that same premise as Hoke. They have been coaching together for one year (and a great year at that). And, like Hoke, I would like to see how they operate under less favorable circumstances than last year.
Just running some basic numbers.
The ranked offenses (by total yards) Mattison faced. Best: 19-Western Michigan, Worst:110-Minnesota (Ohio was second worst at 107). I wouldn't say our defense faced any real offensive juggernauts. This is "largely the same personnel" with an extra year of experience - so its not really the same personnel.
The ranked defenses (by total yards) Borges faced: Best: 7-Illinois, Worst: Western Michigan-99. Not bad. You could say that Borges was the better performing of the 2 and should be considered the star coordinator.
As for the whole "turning a program around" meme. I guess I have a different opinion of what that is. I think that turning a program around is something more sustainable than the one year ( or possibly 2 good years) that he had at BS or SDSU. It could be a function that he didn't stay long enough to make it sustainable. Or it could have been a flash in the pan. I don't know. Boise St and TCU might be good examples for this.
Lastly, the win against OSU. Carr or Moeller or possibly Bo never faced an OSU team as bad as they were in 2011 and never an OSU team in such compliance disarray. I agree, a win again OSU is a win against OSU and I won't trade it for anything, but I don't think even Carr's teams would have choked away this one. Also, as bad as OSU was, we almost choked that one away as well.
Overall, I think my point stands. A confluence of very favorable circumstances made us look a lot better than we were last year. Thusly, Hoke has been almost deified. I'm curious to see what happens when these circumstances are not as favorable and the associate reaction from Hoke before I determine whether he is a good hire or Charlie Weis.
|42 weeks 1 day ago||Yes. I have on several occasions||
It's crazy, because the whole time I'm thinking "how the hell did they get a license to do this". You trade in cash for chips like a real casino. The room is totally bush league, but if you don't mine losing a few bucks playing limit, it can be quite entertaining after drinking a boot.
|42 weeks 1 day ago||I think people DID do their homework||
We don't have to go into the specifics (as we have hashed and re-hashed them here), but Brady Hoke's lackluster tangibles (i.e overall record, record against top-25, etc) were partially off-set by his intangibles, such as by the fact that he "turns" programs around (which is a stretch IMO), his love for Michigan, players love playing for him, etc. I still think it was perfectly reasonable to say he was under-welming hire AT THAT TIME.
Still, though, are we really at the point where we can say he is a good hire? He is only one year in, and while he did post a great record (not to mention his fantastic recruting), I think a portion of that record was "smoke and mirrors" (i.e. ND). This includes our win against OSU. Its certainly good that we did win, but it was against the worst OSU team in about 40 years. In a vacuum, its not really an impressive win. I would like to see how Hoke operates when the honeymoon is over - when he stops shitting gold.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that he has a long way to go to prove that he is not the next Charlie Weis.
|42 weeks 2 days ago||It doesn't really matter..||

I'd say that's pretty fitting for today.
|43 weeks 6 days ago||You could also save the money...||
...just a thought :)
|43 weeks 6 days ago||Also, spending money that you have is a good thing...||
...it means the university is going to have to hire people to do the work. This is good for the state of Michigan assuming those workers are from Michigan. These workers will have to pay taxes (although probably too much) on these incomes which will help the state income tax base. They will also buy stuff with the money they earn which will end up in the pockets of someone else. And so on and so forth.
It's the theory of money velocity - how fast does money move between spend entities. A healthy "speed limit" for this is unknown/debated, but I think a lot of economist wish it was faster these days. The alternative is that these funds can simply be saved which will make its way to start-ups, car loans, mortgages, etc.
The point being. It may suck that prices are being raised and pricing certain people out of going to games. But other people are willing to pick up where you left off and in doing so will eventually benefit the construction workers, tax reciepients, local start-up, etc etc.
Point being #2. There is no such thing as having too much money.

|45 weeks 5 days ago||While slightly off the original intent of the OP's topic...||
...I will add this. As a point of reference, I'm in my mid 30s not married and with no kids. I have been to over 60 weddings in my life (several became divorces), many of which have kids as a result. Generally speaking, in my experience, I would say people (men and women) were less happy when they got married compared to being single, and became more happy when they had kids compared to being single. I always found that interesting. What's more, I sense that the kids bring a deeper more evolutionary connection to the parents than the parents have towards each other. Because of this, the happiness is rooted in your kids, not necessarily your spouse. What are people's thoughts on this?
So what does this mean? Make time for your spouse in all the chaos of having children.

That sucks, and those fucking bigots can eat a bag of dicks.
Did you elevate this issue? I understand that you have no documented proof, but I'm just curious.
|46 weeks 6 days ago||Hate to jump in...||
...but how do you know that you were not hired because you were deaf? I'm not saying that stuff doesn't happen, but do you have clear evidence of such an action? If so, then there are numerous channels to elevate this issue (and its your choice to do so). If not, then you may be mis-labeling a hiring manager as a bigot, and in doing so is (IMO) as reprehensible as the acton of a bigot.
Perhaps you were not hired because of your abilities were not a fit?
|48 weeks 2 days ago||As an FYI||
...new season ticket offers (which sounds like you are in this category), were notified last month and the deadline to accept (and buy tickets) was a few weeks ago. Unless some of these people don't buy tickets (or forget), then you might be out of luck this year. I think points needed for new people was around 8 points this year. It will likely go up for next year.
A word of advice to all, if the AD is offering you to be eligible for tickets by paying $500, then pay $600. Most people probably paid just the $500 at which point you would likely be indistinguishable.
