Now we just need Payne to declare and a core of our guys to return. Things could shape up quite nicely for us if this happens. |
| 5 weeks 6 days ago | Stauskas |
Until Timmy threw down that thunderdunk, I was clamoring for Nik to replace him, just so we could get an outside look. I thought Coach B. played Spike a little too much down the stretch, especially when we needed some size for rebounding, but hey if you can catch lightning in a bottle twice, I guess you gotta take it. The most telling play for Nik was when he pump-faked on a 3, drove the lane, saw Dieng coming over and decided to contort his body and throw an ill-advised pass out to the backcourt that got intercepted by Siva. After that, Nik was benched for the remainder of the game. |
| 5 weeks 6 days ago | Thoughts |
First thing I thought about was that I was still pissed about the style of play. Michigan was content to play their game, while Louisville was allowed to mug/clutch/grab on everything. I heard the perfect analogy when I flipped on the radio. It was the Red Wings of the mid 2000's- dominate the regular season with fluidity/execution/finesse then the rules "change" to clutch/hook/interefere in the playoffs and they don't adjust...get bounced. We were a couple possessions/calls away from winning a freaking National Championship with the youngest team in the entire tournament. What a crazy, pride filled ride. Then I saw something on facebook that said Keep Calm It's Masters Week. Thankfully this will help lower the blood pressure. Now I am just praying there's not a mass exodus of our players. I'll be in the long line to thank Trey Burke for his efforts in the Maize and Blue...if 4 of our starters return we'll be really solid going forward. The selfish part of me wants the team to wake up this morning with a bitter taste in their mouth and say "Let's do this again next year".
Proud of the way they let 'em hang out there. Go Blue! |
| 5 weeks 6 days ago | My biggest gripes |
1. Goaltending right off the bat...kinda set the tone for how things were going to play out. 2. The blatant "kicked ball" possession- the refs miss this call and don't stop play. Leads to a scramble on the baseline where Caris ties up the Louisville player who is laying on the baseline. Somehow Louisville is granted a timeout, and then Hancock immediately hits a 3 to start his run late in the 1st half. 3. Trey's block. All ball, obviously. This was a pre-judged call. That ref was going to call a foul no matter what happened because he figured Trey wasn't going to give an easy layup. Easily the most egregious error of the night. 4. Hancock's "4th". They call a foul on a guy who's not even in the play, which bails Hancock out. He then proceeds to pick up the 4th foul on McGary moments later. Then, hits a 3 late in the game after picking up what would have been his 5th foul. 5. A hodge-podge: McGary blatantly undercut, leads to a jumpball possession. Back to back possessions early in the 2nd half we hit jumpers (GR3 and Burke) where there was contact on the arms of the shooters- no calls. (both of which Steve Kerr said should have been fouls). The Burke non-shooting foul on Stauskas' outlet pass from his back.
Proud of our boys nonetheless. The more the game progressed, the more I felt Pitino's influence of "Creaning" the refs was gonna pay out for them. |

This is gonna comedown to three calls. The timeout on the baseline before Hancock went off. And the incorrect foul call that shoulda have Hancock his fourth. Then he drew the 4th on Mitch. And the GD goaltend. |

As Stauskas can be from the perimeter, is there anyone else who thinks he could have a field day as the one in the high post? He can knock down that shot, has a pretty good handle, and can pass well. I feel that if THJ starts there and misses a couple of shots or has a turnover it could lead to him having an off night, which would significantly hurt our chances. Same with GRIII. Let em hang and Go Blue! |

| 10 weeks 6 days ago | Interesting Matchups |
Given that this is truly hypothetical- If these were the brackets it would be interesting to see us match up with UNC in the 2nd round. James Michael McAdoo would be a very tough matchup for Michigan. The uptempo style may also be somewhat troublesome for us. Honestly, I'd hate to play either Ohio State or Gonzaga on the other side if we were to make it past VCU/New Mexico. Craft has a way of challenging Burke, and DeShawn Thomas seems to perform very well against our defense. I wouldn't sleep on the combination of Pangos/Olynyk from Gonzaga either. Pangos is a very good guard and Olynyk is better than any of our bigs. Mark Few is also an awesome coach, probably COTY at this point in the season...and he's had a pretty impressive tournament resume. The overall quality of our hypothetical region is probably a step below at least 2 of the others, but I don't think I'd want to play out in LA for the regional semis/finals.
I'd be happy with a 2 seed nonetheless. |

Schtick has worn thin for sure. Valenti really does just troll for Michigan fans to bash. I figured with a journalist who also writes for the Det News, Foster would be a little more apt to provide Detroit perspective...espcially since Valenti hates all of the Detroit professional teams, but I think Valenti runs the ship and management just wants Foster to placate for ratings' sake. Within the next 3 years I bet Valenti will have a smaller national show (early morning or night time) on CBS radio or Yahoo Sports radio...not because of his talent, but because of his style of delivery. They do, however, have pretty solid insight in some of the social/political/economic issues that plague Detroit. |
| 11 weeks 14 hours ago | Even Though |
The ticket's daytime shows are pretty Spartan biased, I'd rather stream it from 10-5 than listen to anything that the West Side of Michigan has to offer. The national programs (Cowturd, Rome, Dan Patrick) are the same every single day. At least 97.1 will focus solely on Detroit Teams/Detroit issues. The local shows for the West Side blow as well. Huge "Self/Prodcut Promotion" Simonson on 107.3 is the worst. The dude slobbers all over Izzo/Dantonio and is a talking commercial break, even when commercials aren't on. Any caller who says anything remotely intelligent or challenges his "Huge" opinion is either hung up on, or has the subject changed immediately to Brann's or Miller Lite. Don't even get me started on Sean "Stuttering" Baligian. The guy's voice is simply intolerable. He's another admitted Sparty slap whose only great contribution is when he has "Jim Leyland" or "Dr. Lou Holtz" impersonators on. His cronie, producer Drew is about as useful as a poopy flavored lollypop. The show was better when Terp (Michigan fan) was on, and when Killer Kowalski was alive.

Came in with as much shooter's hype as Stauskas and hasn't proved to even come close to being worth the hype in 4 years. He's also substantially undersized for B1G basketball. I'd look in another direction. |
| 11 weeks 4 days ago | The Problem |
The Problem is it's become apparent that Michigan really hasn't "learned quickly" from any of their losses. They played in a hostile environment in Columbus...which should have translated to success at Bloomington...which should have translated into success in East Lansing...but didn't. They really haven't responded well to adversity in the past month, at all. |
| 11 weeks 4 days ago | I think |
*Chest Tap* My Bad. Uber was a poor choice of adjective. I think from a skill set standpoint he has plenty to offer...offensively. We obviously know of his shooting prowess, as evidenced by the first 20 or so games of the season. He's also shown flashes of being able to get to the basket and finish (see: Game Stauskas meme). I would like to see him be more like a JJ Redick and run off of screens. Too often he's a spot up shooter around the perimeter as both he and GR3 float to the corners and stand there...could be a combination of timidness and Burke dominating the ball. I think he has a decent basketball IQ in terms of vision...but the biggest knack is his passing as he leaves his feet too often - something easily corrected by coaching/experience. I do agree with you that he really shows no interest in playing any sort of defense...which is a huge problem. For a kid who is 6'5ish he should be able to cause problems for smaller shooting guards. I feel that one, he may not have the footspeed to contend, and two, he really just doesn't buy into the defensive effort needed to succeed at that end of the floor. Defense is really about effort and positioning, so I think it's more likely the second issue. I wish his cocky attitude when he's hitting 3's would translate to defenive intensity. I guess it comes down to this: Is he talented? Yes. Is he coachable? The verdict is still out. That's where the comparison to Evan Smotrycz came in. |
| 11 weeks 4 days ago | Team Lacks More Than That |
As the B1G season has progressed, the team's flaws have been not only exposed, but targeted repeatedly and our team hasn't responded well or made necessary adjustments. A few things that come to mind: 1. Michigan's defensive philosophy is hurting them. Michigan, to a man, consistently gets beat off the dribble. Teams are able to drive the lane at will and kick to open shooters, or coast in for relatively uncontested shots. The defensive rotations are virtually non-existent, as shown by Coach B's Brian Kellyism on Stauskas last night (perpetual offender). With no true shot blocker in the lane, teams will continue to ram this down our throat...let's be honest, no one is scared of Jordan Morgan in the paint. Michigan has the length and athleticism to play more zone, whether it be 1-3-1 or a 2-3 matchup, and I think this can help alleviate some of the weak links in the defense, mainly Stauskas and GR3 (who is like Zack Novak, guarding players who are bigger than him). 2. Team psyche: This team really hasn't responded well to adversity. Since we've been number 1 at the end of January, we've lost 4 straight road games in the B1G, and really haven't been impressive in many of our wins. Youth is definitely an issue with this, but so is leadership. Someone hit it on the head last night that somehow Burke became the de facto leader simply because he's our best player. I don't think that's the case. I think the team has a leadership identity crisis, if you will, because no one has stepped to the forefront to get in another's face to step their game up. If anyone, Mitch McGary has the most enthusiasm towards playing intense, but ultimately Coach B. has to be the leader for this team, and I haven't seen that in the last month. 3. Stauskas: His defensive lapses are killing the team, which is exacerbated because his offensive production has slipped. I also think he doesn't respond well to criticism, as he's been accustomed to success in the past. He's a cocky player when he's on, but disappears when he struggles/the competition is raised. His twitter feed constantly thwarts M fans who doubt him. Finally, Coach B. has had talks with him about buying in defensively and what it takes to be an all-around player, but after last night's schadenfreude, I could see him further pulling a Houdini for the rest of the season. He's uber talented and I hope he buys into the system in place. But honestly, I could see him as a player who transfers out at some point, much like Evan Smotrycz, which I hope isn't the case. 4. Offensive flow: In crunch time, it seems our go-to play is let Burke dribble around while everyone stands around. Then we jack a fadeaway or a 3 pointer with 3 seconds left on the clock. I honestly feel this team does not execute set plays very well, and is strictly a motion offense. This will kill us in the tournament, especially when teams lock on to Burke and deny him the ball. It also doesn't help that no one else on offense has the ability to create a shot for themselves. If our post players could find any semblance of a low post move, it would take a ton of pressure off of our shooters. Our big men really only set screens and get rebounds/garbage. The misnomer of Cocah B's teams is that our centers all have the Kevin Pittsnoggle skill sets and can stretch the opposing defense. Sadly, our bigs can't make anything outside of 4 feet. 5. Coaching adjustments: Simply put, we haven't really made any when we are punched in the mouth or are gagging down the stretch. Last night Spike was in the game when we were down 2 with under 3 minutes to play. What happens? He jacks a terrible 3 from the corner. Beilein's substitution patterns are maddening at times, and the fact that we really don't execute plays to score easy baskets kills us when we need a run stopper.
Sorry if it's alot. Just my underlaying thoughts from the past several weeks. And after getting minimal sleep in seeing this epic choke and the Wings gag another one, I felt I needed some form of catharsis today. |

As a coach of Special Olympians (Basketball, Softball, Handball) for going on 11 years now, I urge you to get involved with a local chapter and see how much Special Olympics means, not just to the athletes, but to their families as well. It's not just the athletic aspect that's important, but the social aspect as well, as often times these individuals have been ostracized because of their disabilities. You'd soon realize just how for granted we take something as simple as sports. |

The Dribble Weave/Handoff around the perimeter doesn't help. This has seemingly become our offense and It's easy to defend, really. Teams lately have stepped up and hedged the handoff pushing our offense back to half court. Teams have also begun to switch on screens around the perimeter and we continue to handoff which leads to more stagnant offensive flow. |

It'd be nice to start quickly, a la the Northwestern games. If we start quick I'd say Michigan by 6-10. If not, it wouldn't be surprising to see Sparty win by 10. I feel like if we get a couple of good looks and buckets early it will help the team settle in. I'm sick of seeing the team start slow, especially on the road. MSU has looked dead at home in the first halves of their past few games. They scored 18 first half points against Minnesota for God's sake. Start quickly. Silence the crowd. Get EVERYONE involved (WE ON Anyone?). P.S. I really hope Burke does his beginning of the year Burke - roughly 16 points and 10 assists. It's growing old having him dribble out the clock while everyone stands and watches. Go Blue! |
| 14 weeks 1 day ago | Anyone else |
Would anyone else like to see us throw in some more zone defense? I feel like we used to use it before to mask our athletic deficiencies in years past, now it seems like we use it to change up looks when we get down big. I think this team has the athleticism to wreak havoc and cause some frustration/turnover transition opportunities. Also, we suck at blocking out in man to man situations, so the rebounding dropoff wouldn't be too drastic. |
| 14 weeks 1 day ago | It's the same crew |
We had yesterday. Again, Gene Staratore sucks. |
| 14 weeks 1 day ago | Having to guard |
The other team's power forward every night isn't helping. He's a natural wing man and he needs to be utilized for his athleticism. I think that's the reason for his struggles, as well as why guys like Max B. are getting more PT. |
| 14 weeks 2 days ago | It already happened multiple times |
Under Johnny B. Sick of watching that happen when common sense doesn't come to the forefront. |

| 14 weeks 5 days ago | Nice to see |
Craft be the one to choke it down the stretch- blocked shot by Burke and the no call on the final play.
This team must bring a better defensive effort. The late run in the 2nd half was sparked by a couple of steals and deflections. The interior defense must improve beyond McGary's output. Nix and Payne are beginning to worry me a little bit.
Belein better get on these guys about BLOCKING OUT. OSU and IU killed us on 2nd chance opportunities. If they didn't lead to immediate putbacks, they led to free throws after the fact. Very frustrating to see opposing posessessions last longer than a minute. It's also very frustrating to see we don't really crash the offensive glass on perimeter jumpers.
I'll take the W. But there needs to be major improvement if we want to win in Madison and East Lansing. |
| 14 weeks 6 days ago | Poetic Justice |
Craft gets away with obscene amounts of contact. Seems fitting. |
