When I read really far down into the comments, it's usually because I'm looking for posts like SC's that give more details about what's going on at an advanced level but understandable to the layman like myself. Now, I think MGrowOld (or MGrowWorld as my brain reads it) raised a fair-seeming question asking if there's anything Borges does that he disagrees with, because everything he said seemed to be a bit one-sided. However, I think that was in response to the situation in which there was a flood of criticism against Borges.
I'd like to keep seeing his posts, but there's always his blog if he's done here.

I like it...since we havent seen this sort of thing before, and there's no risk (at least right now) of it being over-used. But doing this every other year would be often enough.

This is interesting, but I'mconfused about what you mean when you say "division" a few times (whether you mean conference division or division as it is used by the ncaa now: div I, II, III; which I believe you referred to as "level" at the beginning. )
" If an at-large team is selected for the playoffs from the same conference in one division lower, the worst sixth place team plays the winner from the seventh place game on Thursday..."
That means same conference but one level lower? And this would mean the losers from those 2 games are being replaced by the level 2 conference champ and its at-large friend?
Sorry if I seem slow here, I'm really not familiar with relegation.

I'm guessing a few think that while he wasn't trying something nefarious to gain an unfair advantage (like oversigning?) that there was still negligence going on in his program. Even if it's some bureaucrats in the AD who were supposed to keep track of this stuff so coaches can focus on the actual game, the leaders have to take responsibility. This should include other AD officials too, right? Of course since Rodriguez is under other pressure, he is singled out.
Also, some of us are swayed a little by public opinion. I am a little too, honestly. It's just something subconscious when you constantly see nothing but negative press for the man. I see plenty of fans who are rational and patient about this. I don't know about AD folks, but we know MSC is onboard, so I doubt they're ready to pay the buyout, go through the chaos, etc. They're not stupid.
My point is, we don't need to worry about Rodriguez, cooler heads will prevail. I don't disagree that the demanding, impatient crowd is annoying, but they're not in charge. We need to stress out less over them; we've got enough stress as it is.
What I think is a more interesting question is the status of Hopson. Have his recruiting shortcomings and the poor play of his position group reached the point where we should let him go? And if so, will that happen? Can Brian spend more time on issues that are less obvious and headache-inducing?

One question I had a UFR or two ago that I think some of us who unfortunately missed out on HS football might appreciate:
What exactly does the defensive line slanting mean as opposed to playing normally without slanting? All I got from google was step-by-step instructions on all the steps and arm motions a defender should take to carry it out, which was a little much when all I sought was a basic definition.
Is it just attacking the O-line at angle as opposed to head on, with a few different?
|4 years 23 weeks ago||More route questions||
So drag = shallow cross?
Also, since flag and post are named after the objects you're kinda running at after going vertical (goalpost or flag at the goal line-sideline border) could a corner route be another name for the fade?
Also, I've heard of tunnel screens a few times lately and don't know what that variety means.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||I second this||
That tab's a good place for this. Though I've picked a lot of this stuff up here over the years (years?!) that I didn't know before, sometimes I was just guessing based on context ("backside" for example, was uncertain despite "playside" being obvious, I thought it was the opposite of some other, yet-to-be-discovered side). Congregating it all like this is wonderful for reference or first timers. Great post.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||I wonder about this too||
We've all read a few reasons like it's for pumping up the crowd and the players, some people can't hear the band, and so on. It's mostly word from mgobloggers since the AD doesn't feel the need to explain itself.
There is that one Rodriguez quote (it was either this past season or off-season) about wanting something like this music to boost excitement that I remember Brian saying 'please, no' to. Does he really have that kind of pull, or has he inspired the higher ups to take his suggestion on this?
What happened to the old farts who should hate this kinda thing? The only one I know actually likes the music (not all of the songs specifically, of course), and I'm trapped in some bizzarro universe where I'm telling my father to turn that music down.

|4 years 25 weeks ago||Ah, you typed my point and||
Ah, you typed my point and then some in less time, I concede.
I think if you took care of the membership, the traveling band could still exist without issue. I don't recall how far from the student section they travel, but that can alleviate some of the need for directing sound. At least they can move up to around section 30-31 and point right for the students right behind the band.
I hope you're right that it was the game and not the music that pumped up the crowd, maybe a few games like EMU will be a good experiment.
[edit: missed the point about REQUIRED membership, yes that is a bad idea]
|4 years 25 weeks ago||2 Questions||
To the fans across from the opposing band: can you at least hear the directional "Let's Go Blue" the MMB plays from their seats? If so, for a temporary solution, maybe we need to focus on asking Profs Boerma and Haithcock to be louder and alternate directions every couple songs or so (I'm guessing making a new formation with everyone pointed outwards in different directions would dilute the sound too much).
Also, since the AD seems pretty high on giving the wireless companies a sales boost with that 3rd/4th quarter song suggestion text message thing, why don't we have the suggestion be for the piped-in music and let the band choose for itself? Then nobody (everybody) will complain about the music choices!
I was typing that second one in jest, but now I wonder if that would actually happen, would everyone make an awful choice like Sweet Caroline, or is the whole draw of the texting that you get to influence the choice of the band, since you can hear the regular music anytime?

I was impressed to see Gingell kicking off some last game, noticibly better than Wright has been. Long returns have increased the burden on our defense, already dealing with the turnovers. I don't know how much of it is on the coverage instead of the hangtime or distance, but I felt like we couldn't land anything inside the 10 against ND or Wisconsin for the first half. It would be great if Gingell could bring this improvement after he had his confidence shattered on a play that wasn't his fault.
