| 2 years 45 weeks ago | Here's what Bennett said when speaking to his BigEast audience: |
It won't be easy to go and win this game on the road, especially against a team desperate to get off to a good start. But UConn is a veteran team that's ready for this kind of challenge, and it was simply a better team at the end of last season than the Wolverines were. If the game is close, expect Michigan to start doubting itself again. I give an ever-so-slight nod to UConn pulling a very mild upset. The prose is slightly more pro-UConn on his BigEast blog, but that's not to say he's not raising a good point-- I'm a bit worried about what might happen if UConn jumps out to a lead or comes from behind. |

If you're approaching or are over 30, you'll probably find it too crowded. My advice (if you're older): go to Thom's, stand near the door, wait for a handful of 30-something people to walk in and freak out at sheer insanity of the packed bar, and rally a critical mass of them to find a super-lame bar right down the street; the lame bar will probably have no problem with putting on the UM game. That's what I did last year for the UM/Utah opener-- it made the loss suck considerably less. |
| 3 years 30 weeks ago | Delaware State Connection? |
It seems like posters have been especially reckless in the days leading up to the Delaware State game. I wonder if fans' typical preoccupation with worthier opponents just isn't there this week...leading to all this craziness. Just an observation. |

...when it's deserved (i.e., highly inflammatory/trollish/etc). I kind of wish they ended with a Sandman-type character coming out to police sirens, doing a little tap dance, and escorting the negee of the internet for a bit (shame on you if you've never seen Showtime at the Apollo). That said, I find far too many posts/replies on here that get negged for reasons- in my opinion- that are outside the scope of what Brian created the down arrow for. All I do is +1 posters that were unjustly negged. I'm not going to make a big deal out of it- I'm not trying to be the positive police- but I think its a way to reduce the chance that we alienate people who primarily come here because they love Michigan sports. |
| 3 years 34 weeks ago | PS3 |
I just bought the new PS3 slim a couple of weeks ago. It was a tougher choice (360 v. PS3) when the PS3 was $100 more, but the new slimmer design and lower price point sold me. I'm a very casual gamer, though; serious folks might have a more informed opinion. |

| 3 years 36 weeks ago | To be fair... |
...I heard a soundbite on WTKA this morning- an ad for Cowherd's show- where he was going on about how RR will get it done in Ann Arbor if he's given four years. To paraphrase: he said RR is a proven winner (i.e., won at WVU) and that he'll be a thorn in OSU's side because he's aggressive and Tressel is conservative (He also defended Weis, saying he won Superbowls). I'd like to think we'll be more than just a thorn in Tressel's side, but he caught me off guard with all the positivity, to be honest. He may not like the fans but it sounds like he likes the coach. |
| 3 years 36 weeks ago | I'm yelling "Sausage!" everytime his foot touches the ball. |

| 3 years 36 weeks ago | Another problem with watching football on TV... |
...is that- in my opinion- broadcasts pay too much attention to offensive alignments and you don't see much focus on the secondary, which is key. They break to the sidelines or booth in between plays when it would be great to see what's going on pre-snap. The offense gets to see where/how the defense lines up but TV broadcasts don't lend themselves very well to that. |
| 3 years 36 weeks ago | I'm not gonna lie... |
...I bought "Football for Dummies" some years ago. It's a decent read. Anyone that's ever played football would be bored-to-death by it but a casual observer of the game would probably find it pretty informative. There's a lot of useless stuff (e.g., "The 10 greatest coaches of all time") but it does a fairly good job of breaking down different offensive/defensive alignments and what types of situations call for different types of plays. It spells a lot of stuff out for you that Chris Brown (of Smart Football) would take for granted that his audience is familiar with. I'd only recommend it if you're a real novice, though. Reading it and playing NCAA Football was helpful for me. |

But I also think that by staying silent now, he's also undermining any potential influence he could have in the future if/when RR turns things around (and I trust that he will). |
| 3 years 37 weeks ago | Matt Damon! |
In all seriousness, it's a shame, really-- hanging RR out to dry like that. |
| 3 years 37 weeks ago | Unless I am mistaken, you have a phantom 20 hrs. |
Magnus also did this math elsewhere, but to put it in the context of the quoted text: Saturday + Sunday = 12 hrs USA Today average = 44.8, so we're 22.3 hours below the USA Today average. Not sure where the other 20 hrs you implied are coming from. |
| 3 years 37 weeks ago | Clarification? |
I thought the Freep article implied that "...21 - 24 hrs" meant we were somewhere between 1 - 4 hrs over the 20 hr maximum, which would put us 20 - 24 hrs below the national average reported by USA today. |
| 3 years 37 weeks ago | The NCAA has to draw the line somewhere... |
...and I understand that. But my question is-- were the violations listed in the Freep article egregious enough to warrant current/former players running to the press? In my epinion, they weren't. |
| 3 years 37 weeks ago | That's what tripped me out-- |
Are football players really complaining about going 1 - 4 hours over? I know that's only part of their argument, but come on-- it's not like they're working 80 hrs/week. I don't want to liken our fan base to that of an SEC team's, but I could see them being completely flabbergasted by this. |

...but I know my Star Wars brethren couldn't stand the wait for The Phantom Menace. EDIT: Some folks have a hair trigger on the down arrow, so let me add that I'm not saying it sucked-- just that Jar Jar and the poor dialogue brought it down a bit. |
| 3 years 38 weeks ago | Perhaps I shouldn't place so much faith in our coaching staff... |
...but if they want to give reps to all three, I'm good with that. RR et al. are not in the business of making our QBs happy; they're doing what they think will help the team win. |
| 3 years 38 weeks ago | Ditto |
On the one hand, I kind of hope Weis gets canned. On the other: ND will probably- and perhaps through sheer chance alone- get this "coach search" thing right for a change, and I don't want Michigan locked into a 20-year contract against an Urban Meyer*-led squad. *(or whoever the next super-coach is) |
| 3 years 38 weeks ago | And for the bonus,... |
...Graham- as the DC at East Central University- thwarted RR's Glenville State offense in the 1993 NAIA National Championship. And Rice fans would argue that there's a special place in hell for douchebags like him. I know I'm more than 8 months late on this but that's how pandas roll. |

FWIW, I wasn't necessarily advocating the culture shock argument as much as I was simply acknowledging what posters were saying elsewhere. Another thread recently discussed the fact that Bo's spring practice started with 140 players and ended with roughly 75; perhaps culture shock wasn't evident in the W-L column b/c Bo still had the personnel to field a decent team after all the defections. I'm sure other factors, including "No-Manningham shock," "No-Arrington shock," and "No-[insert player here] shock" all contributed to the debacle that is known as Michigan's 2008 football season. |
| 3 years 43 weeks ago | Perhaps that explains Wilson's use of the TE at OU |
Also:
This kind of support's Meeechigan Dan's argument about last year's struggles being related to "culture shock." |
| 3 years 43 weeks ago | Chris Brown on RR |
I remember a Rodriguez interview where he basically said that a lot of what Walker was doing with the spread was straight from the Clemson/WVU playbook to the point that they didn't even change their signals, etc., yet Brown credits Walker (and Meyer) with the "great leap forward" in the spread/zone-read. I don't know who to believe, but Brown doesn't seem to be particularly fond of Rodriguez for anything more than being the pioneer of the spread; he's also said that RR's passing game lacks a conceptual foundation. Hopefully we'll see another great offensive leap at Michigan. |

| 3 years 44 weeks ago | Stellar, stellar post. |
One question: Do teams really need 11 wins for BCS games? I know that would be ideal, but last year OSU got to one with 10 wins and VT with 9. Not that I expect us to go to a BCS game in 2010 but maybe the road to one doesn't need to be that tough. |
| 3 years 45 weeks ago | Touché |
I initially thought that the down arrow should be reserved for trolls but I now see the need for it in other cases. But, like you, I don't anticipate using the down arrow much given how quickly others get at the idiots. |
| 3 years 45 weeks ago | One concern with knowing who docked your poinits is retaliation |
I could see that getting out of hand. Another potential fix: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think sub-20 users can see what types of posts by other users are being awarded/deducted points, nor can they see when their own comments are being awarded/deducted. I think that information would help any well-intentioned new users get to basic user status more quickly. |
| 3 years 45 weeks ago | I was thinking about whether or not I wanted to start an account |
...and then Brian posted that image in one of his stories. I couldn't stop laughing, and knew that the WTF-Panda had to be me. Glad to hear that someone else finds it amusing. |
| 3 years 45 weeks ago | Yeah |
I see the need for such a system, I just think it should have been introduced with a bit more discussion around it than a “Boom—here it is” type deal. I also understand why some of the older users are annoyed by seeing so many threads on the topic, but that just speaks to the fact that a lot of users are concerned about this issue, and people should have their opinions (epinions?) heard. |
| 3 years 45 weeks ago | I hear you, ... |
…but I think this board did a fairly decent job of encouraging discussion and reining in morons before the point system was in place. The installation of the point system seems to have been a direct response to the growing troll problem (which seems to have been abated for the most part). Whatever happened to the old days where inflammatory remarks got reined in with a simple, “calm down, asshole”? I think there’s some utility to having a point system but the issue of point allocation should probably be addressed in more detail by Brian and users at large. |
| 3 years 45 weeks ago | I wonder if the down arrow could be replaced by a troll button. |
Do you think people would be more selective in using a troll button compared to a simple down arrow? I do think that some folks have been a bit too liberal in how they use the down arrow; perhaps this pattern would change if the actual button made it unambiguously clear that it is to be used for trolls only. Just a thought. |

I'd actually been thinking that some type of prediction feature would be worthy of its own tab, like "MGoPredictions" or something to that effect. I'd imagine that Brian could post some type of template that would let users predict wins/losses for each individual game. It would be a great source of discussion if he (an to some extent, we) could pull it off. |
| 3 years 45 weeks ago | How about an original prediction that can't be changed... |
...and then an additional "mid-season revision" after 4 or 6 games. That way, folks could still be held accountable for their first prediction while allowing everyone to make a more realistic prediction after viewing available data. |

I'm not saying Lloyd's gesture- if true- wasn't nice, but doesn't he live in Ann Arbor or the surrounding area? It's not like he flew from his Florida retirement home to visit Grady. I'm sure that there are a ton of retired coaches that wouldn't visit a jailed former player but there are also certainly a lot (more than a "few, if any") that would. Again, not knocking Lloyd's legacy as a father-figure HC-- just sayin' that I don't find this particular instance all that noteworthy. |
