i wouldn't say 90%, but market reports show nike is still the dominant brand.
|34 weeks 3 days ago||You're contradicting youself.||
You're contradicting youself. First you say that shoe companies impact ingrecruting is false. now you say that it is a factor. No one is arguing that every recruit's decision is solely based on the shoe company.
Let's set aside the major football powers for now. Other college football programs without large budgets and product-only contracts with Nike still align themselves with Nike because of Nike's strong brand influence. in their recruiting pitch, they do play up the fact that they have nike prouducts. The major football powers will have other factors like facilities, education, tradition that should trump the logo on the shoe, but for some recruits, it's still a factor.
Another aspect that is not being discussed is that these shoe companies can help build the school brand. Oregon would not be where they are without Nike's help. Notre dame jumped to under armour with the expectation that UA will help market/build/maintain their brand. With a program like Michigan with so much tradition, we may not think much help is needed, but with so much competition, every little bit helps.
We want the University of Michigan football program to be sucessful, so for me the question isn't what logo do I want to wear for me, but what associations should Michigan make to bring the highest chance of success? Every detail matters.

Here are ar the stats from last year:
Looks like you have a decent shot.
My time was too long ago to be relevant, but do make sure that you have a plan for how to repay the out-of-state tuition costs, like getting a degree in readily employable major like someone else mentioned. You don't want to be in $100,000 in debt without a job, no matter how much you love Michigan. Don't forget it's an economic decision as well.
With your success in academics, you can also consider Michigan as a graduate school option. Yes, it delays gratification, but you can get assistanceships (teaching, research) that makes it much more afforable for out of state students. Grants, loans, and scholarships got me through undergrad at Michigan, but research assisantship paid for my grad school.
I'm not trying to talk you out of your dream of reaching Michigan, just trying to show that there are other routes.

|37 weeks 4 days ago||Michigan's switch to Adidas||
Michigan's switch to Adidas in 2007 wasn't because of money as Nike was willing to match the dollar offer. Adi made concessions that Nike wouldn't, which tilted Michigan towards Adi. The sports marketing climate was also different back then which motivated Adi to take a major team from Nike, and Michigan was it. The climate will obviously be different when the current contract is up and this ND-UA deal will definitely have an influence.

This probably means that Michigan will go with Nike or Adi, with UA not being an option in 2016. Notre Dame wouldn't let Michigan one-up them again. The rivalry continues off the field...

i wouldn't get so worked up about being "back." Michigan players have been quoted as being "back" while Hoke wouldn't.
If Michigan being back means having a punishing defense, it's still two recruiting classes away from having that type of talent and depth.

If Michigan being back means winning the Big Ten, it hasn't been back since 2004.

i attended the "weigh in" portion of "The Opening" today just for a part of it. This is where each athlete was introduced. For the part I attended, T-Rich, Ross, and Standifer were introduced. Only ~5% of all athletes wore hats of their school, but all three of these guys had michigan hats on. I shouted "Go Blue" after their intro to show them some Michigan love.
When they were dismissed, T-Rich and Ross came over to shake my hand and said that they appreciated the shout out. Magnuson shouted "nice shirt!" as he walked by (I wore my Michigan polo today).
I'm reporting this not to put the focus on me, rather the amount of Michigan love these guys have going into their senior season. I will attend more of this event and share what I can.

It is typically a concern when any working person switches jobs every couple years. If you look at Borges' resume, he has bounced from school to school. He's had successful offenses before, so why has he jumped around so much? I have no knowledge of his personality and interpersonal skills. But if he's lacking in that depatment, he just may not be head coach material. Being a head coach is so much more than X's and O's.

Sometimes it helps Michigan for rivals to win. This doesn't mean you root for the team, but for an outcome. Having said that, in this bowl season, wins by ND, MSU, and OSU have minimal benefit to UM, so I will continue to root against them. this offense puts up a lot of yards, but has to improve turning those yards into points. this offense may need misdirection or something unexpected against wiscy and osu. because as it stands, wiscy and osu have a higher point per game average.
Michigan - 37.7 ppg
Wisconsin - 40.2 ppg
Ohio State - 41.6 ppg
if the offense doesn't turn the ball over, then the offense can score an Oregon-like 50 points per game, but because of the turnovers, some razzle dazzle may be needed in certain situations.

with better downfield blocking, raynaud doesn't get pinballed. our WRs are better blockers and our FB hasn't seen the playing field in many games, let alone be asked to run downfield and block like owen schmitt was trying on that play.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||slanted but mostly accurate||
are michigan fans the only ones that are allowed to criticize the michigan defense? Is Tom Gerdeman slanted? Yes, but i find his observations mostly accurate. giving up 65 points in a game should be embarassing. ray vinopal falling on his face because he had to veer 20 degrees is embarrassing. our defense is bad and zook made some bad calls. if we had lost to illinois, there would be no RichRod supporters left. no, i don't like hearing all this, especiallly from a rival, but they are accruate. Gerdeman is even aware of insights like Roh asking not to play LB that your average Michigan fan does not have.
nothing would please me more than to read a Michigan Monday after a victory over Ohio State. winning this year would be at the level of Bo's victory over Woody in '69. i do reserve some hope that we can win that game. the win over Illinois was important because bowl eligibility won't be riding on "The Game." a win over Purdue is important because RichRod's job won't be (most likely) riding on "The Game." This team will have nothing to lose for "The Game," so the game sets up nicely for a major upset. Go Blue!
|3 years 46 weeks ago||coaching > tradition||
CoachRod does a good job of encouraging the right attitude toward accomplishments. Notice that instead of saying that the best players on the team like Molk and Martin played "well," he says "consistent." A coach's job is to alway motivate players, even the best ones, to play even better. Language is a big factor in communicating that you can always be better.
On the flip side, a coach doesn't want to create lofty expectations that a player cannot achieve. It may sound like an excuse for poor performance, but CoachRod has said that the secondary is young and even when Denard has been playing well, CoachRod would point out it's Denard's first year as a starter. This kind of expectation management allows the player to fail without their confidence being shattered.
So what does this have to do with the #1 jersey? All of the above. The #1 jersey has the potential of allowing a receiver to think he has made it to the top and thus limit his motivation. It also has the potential of creating lofty expectations for a receiver only to come crashing down.
This type of tradition where a number is bestowed on a player is rare because it makes coaching another degree more complex. I expect this tradition to be rarely used under CoachRod, which begs the question if this is even a tradition if tradition is supposed to be a recurring act or event?

|4 years 4 days ago||Gotta love Denard||
Denard is so humble and such a team guy, it makes it easier for DG and TF to accept their support roles. Tate has always been polished with the media, but after the Bowling Green game, he came off as more genuine and transparent than he was last year. Chalk it up to a sign of maturity. Way to go Tate!

yes, Tate is like the trusty sidearm to use when your main assult rifle has run out of ammo.
|4 years 4 days ago||perhaps i shouldn't have||
perhaps i shouldn't have named a specific team, but my point is that the best players play at a high level against the best competition. no one in the 3 deep has yet to do that in their young careers. the buckeyes have owned the big 10 for too long and any one of the 3 QBs will be perceived as great if any of them reverse the trend (with the team) and gets Michigan getting back to being a Big 10 bully.
i believe in the "team game" concept, but RichRod's offense is so dependent on QB play, the team will go succeed or fail with the QB play against the best competition (cough**OSU***cough). there is no WR, TE, OL, RB on this team who can carry the team if the QB is having an off day against the best competition (cough*OSU*cough).
|4 years 4 days ago||i would not trade our 3 deep||
i would not trade our 3 deep at QB for anyone else's in college football, but let's not get carried away. it was Bowling Green folks, and I look forward to see how Denard plays and stays healthy against the Big Ten while DG and TF comes in for mop up time. Beating the buckeyes should be a part of being the best anything at michigan and the last QB to do that was John Navarre. It's a long way to go, but it sure does look like a lot of fun.

but there isn't a gold standard as of now on how you diagnose and evaluate the severity of the injury. The NFL brought in a system called IMPACT to measure a baseline for all NFL Combine participants. But there isn't a reliable way to clear a player back onto the field. Kelly may not have had proper or enough medical advice, so he may have chose on the side of winning the game.

|4 years 2 weeks ago||i agree you can't expect too||
i agree you can't expect too much when 5 are blocking 3. for a 3 man front, they can get some pressure.
but what this means is that with an empty backfield, we have 8 players guarding 5 receivers, yet Crist threw for 277 yards. there is still room to improve, but the defense has been playing better than most people expected. i'm optimistic for the future.
|4 years 2 weeks ago||i beg to differ||
i don't consider this a repeat of Tate. Tate was praised for his "moxie" but his numbers were average for a big ten QB. denard is putting up Michael Vick numbers and getting everyone's attention. i do believe for him to clinch the Heisman, he has to have a big role in wins over other Big Ten favorites.
UConn and ND have above average defenses, so as of now, only injury would keep him from putting up the numbers.
and by the way, UConn won today 62-3 over Texas Southern. yes, a cupcake, but they dominated on both sides of the ball.
|4 years 3 weeks ago||Actions > Words||
Denard and his performance has been all over the interweb, including the front page of ESPN, even getting the Heisman frontrunner label by Dennis Dodd at CBS. I hope whatever has been going on in Tate's head since the game is a lapse in checking his ego or an episode of jealousy that passes quickly. It's gotta be tough not only being demoted to #3 after being a starter, but the media being all over it, and I don't think it matters if you're 19 or 91 or anywhere in between.
If you've been to his family's QBForce website, he knows what it is to be and how to talk like a leader, a team guy, and a QB. The way that he handled questions at media day, Troy's comments, and the wingless helmet was a positive sign that he is able to handle adversity that EVERY single Michigan QB has and will go through. The media attention, competition, getting pushed, and pushing others are what has made Michigan QBs into great professionals (whether it be in the NFL or in the "regular" workplace).
I hope he wakes up tomorrow with a clearer mind and continues to fight for playing time at Michigan. We throw a lot of Michigan clichés around here, but this is truely a case where "those who stay will be champions." Tate, stay and fight - for the team, for yourself and for what you say you stand for.
