How do you define "explosiveness"? If you mean quickness, that was definitely his forte last I saw him in the All-Star game. Granted, he'll be going against better players on the OL in the B1G, but I thought his ability to shoot past the OL was a definite strong suit of his.
I'll be curious to see how much muscle he's put on in the past year, as he definitely looked like he needed some.

You should probably watch that game. Urban needs to make amends with Buckeye fans, so he knows what he must do. He's going to punch a Clemson player in the throat. BOOM, instant OSU legend.
|1 week 3 days ago||In my own mind, the emphasis||
In my own mind, the emphasis was on "historically", as in, has Ball St. ever really been a powerful program?
Also, notice I mentioned "growing pains". I never said Hoke made them a title contender overnight. It was his first HC gig, and it took him some time to get to a point at which they were competing for the MAC title and had an outside shot at a BCS bowl. But he did it. Then, perhaps he found a system or method, which allowed the quick SDSU turnaround.
Sure, his UM record has gone down each year, and that's cause for concern; but there is also reason for optimism.
|1 week 4 days ago||Smegma.||
|1 week 4 days ago||The "barely cracked .500" is||
The "barely cracked .500" is equally old. He inherited horrible programs with no real football cache. Assuming he rebuilt Ball St. ethically and without egregious violations, then how hard is it to see that he had quite a task on his hands? Lots of growing pains for a first time HC at an historically downtrodden program.
Next was SDSU, which was the proverbial dumpster fire. In his 2nd year they went 9-4, and kept each loss very close. Within a couple years, they sent at least three guys to the NFL. Not bad for a school that isn't any kind of NFL factory.

ND has been recruiting very well, so they might be able to plug some of those holes without too much of a problem.
Totally with you on Golson. He's a 2nd year starter, coming in after a year off from football, and he plays the most critical position in sports. I like our chances there, especially with our D returning most of its contributors and maybe even adding a few more.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Thanks for posting this.||
Thanks for posting this. Man, so many highs, and one major low, right at the end. I just hope this opened the eyes of the offensive coaching staff to what level of talent is on this roster and how awesome they can be if allowed to go out and play ball.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Good points. Those turnovers||
Good points. Those turnovers seemed to make everyone extremely gunshy and may have dictated much of how the offensive plays were called during much of the season. The sad part is that many of us armchair coaches were pining for lots of quick passing to what is a pretty talented group of receivers to open up the running game. Look what happened when the game plan went that route. Dang near beat a very good OSU team.
Many people here were speculating about how The Game 2013 might look a bit like the 2008 Capital One Bowl, when an awesome performance in one big game was juxtaposed against a dismal season, and they were pretty much dead-on....except we lost this one.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I'm no insider, but I'll play||
I'm no insider, but I'll play along.
1) Assuming everything has to go through the Head Coach, and the coordinators are extensions of the HC's philosophy/vision for his team, I'd have to say that while Borges was doing what he and Hoke agreed upon in preparation meetings, that agreement was met with an understanding that UM would be a power running team, dammit.
2) I don't think the power football "belief" is likely to be abandoned by Hoke, but I sure hope he sees the benefits of adjusting the schemes and play calls to the personnel until they're ready to do things how he'd like. Taking OSU down to the last play counts as a "benefit" here. We've sure seen the negative consequences of not doing so (Iowa, Nebraska, PSU, etc).
I just hate the thought of the coaches sacrificing potential wins while using games as "practices" to get better for the future. That idea has been tossed around here, and it really doesn't seem all that far-fetched when you look at how this season unfolded. Then again, I suppose you have to fully install your brand of football at some point.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I guess I have an optimistic||
I guess I have an optimistic slant to my memory, because outside of his Iowa futility, I tend to think of Funchess as quite reliable. I recall some incredible one-handed catches and little DB's being helpless to stop him. Butt also had a one-hander last week. Can't disagree with Gallon and his reliability, and I don't think you force a pass just because the receiver is tall, but I've just always liked tall dude mismatches in goal line situations. Been that way since I first saw big ol' Dave Jokisch (sp?) get it done back in the 80's.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I'd imagine that quite a few||
I'd imagine that quite a few coaches would jump at the chance to take the reins of the offense with this young, talented group of Wolverines. Sure, it may not be a big name guy, but that doesn't mean that he couldn't be successful and end up being a big name guy.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I have often wondered if that||
I have often wondered if that is what has gone on with Borges/Hoke this season.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Listen, maybe a few in that||
Listen, maybe Funchess dropped a few in that Iowa game, but he didn't have problems like that in this game from what I recall. In fact, he's been pretty damned reliable overall, Iowa notwithstanding.
But even if not Funchess, notice I threw Butt in there as well. I just like to see them find a mismatch and exploit it. That didn't happen, which is my only complaint about that last call.
Also, what makes you think that missing on a pass to Funchess would've resulted in more complaints here? I don't see how you can conclude that. If anything, we'd probably be equally bummed. But at least it would have been a different play from a different formation that had been shown just prior to the time out.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||And what makes it even worse||
And what makes it even worse is that the play before that, we saw what many of us had been screaming for all season: Funchess getting a quick throw near the corner in single coverage. That play was essentially like throwing an alley-oop to Shaq back in the day - you know it's coming but can't do anything about it. Hell, Funchess even "posted up" against that helpless DB. I would have liked to see that same play again, or else something like it with Jake Butt. Those kids are 6-5 and 6-6, and both are very good receivers....use them in goal line situations!
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Not that the OL didn't play||
Not that the OL didn't play well yesterday, but I think the playcalling (quick passing and lots of misdirection) masked their weaknesses (FINALLY!). It's hard for me to think the OL really found much cohesion when they were starting multiple combinations of guys all season long. Those quick passes (so DG doesn't have to try to read progressions), and getting the ball to playmakers like Gallon, allowed the RB's to find some room to run. Imagine, passing to set up the run.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||In general, I agree with you||
In general, I agree with you about the potential. This team will have plenty of talent for 2014. I just fear that the coaches only released the hounds to try to beat ohio, and it'll soon be back to -3 yards and a cloud of dust. Here's to hoping that doesn't happen.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Optimistic: only if the||
Optimistic: only if the coaches decide to unleash the offensive weapons on a regular basis like they did today. It's so frustrating how hundreds of us here have griped all season about calling plays that utilize the players' strengths and hide their weaknesses, and yet the highly paid coaches couldn't seem to see what we saw. What a waste of talent.
Pessimistic: early in the season, if we witness close games and general ineptitude against teams we should beat by 20-30 points, I'll have a hard time believing the season will unfold much differently than this one did.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I'm not sure about the exact||
I'm not sure about the exact numbers, but there have been some notable UM players from the Southwest. Lewan, Roh, Branch come to mind, not to mention plenty of other kids that have had UM in their list of final teams. SoCal isn't far away, and Hoke seems to offer lots of guys in that area, too. Of course, there have been more UM players from Florida, but to say UM doesn't recruit the SW "at all" is inaccurate.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I can't see Orgeron getting||
I can't see Orgeron getting the USC HC job. The main reason I say that is because he was at the heart of recruiting violations, and I doubt Pat Haden wants any part of that. However, I could see the next HC retaining "Coach O" on his staff. He'd be wise to do so, IMO.

I can't see Auburn jumping OSU if they finish their evisceration of the woeful Big 10 as expected, and Urb takes his streak to 25-0 or whatever it'd be. Auburn may be pretty good, and they'll prove it if they beat Bama, but there is no reason to think "the powers that be" would conspire to keep the Buckeyes out of the NCG. As much as the SEC love abounds, I just can't see it happening. Urban and Co. have plenty of national panache.
I did hear a couple of analysts theorizing that if Winston gets suspended, voters will take his absence into account when these last couple of rankings come out. Their logic was that, in spite of their record, without Winston, FSU immediately becomes average and not really worthy of playing in the NCG.

Green indeed has nimble feet and a quick burst for such a big dude, but I figure he'll get caught from behind quite a bit. He just doesn't have big-time breakaway speed from what I can tell. That said, I like how aggressively he hits the holes (amazing to see holes from this line!), and he seems to have solved that going-down-too-easy-on-first-contact problem we saw early on. We won't need 80 yard TD runs if we can grind out 80 yard drives and continue to play good D consistently.

|8 weeks 1 hour ago||The basic theme for Minnesota||
The basic theme for Minnesota would be a game that was long, slow, plodding and somewhat painful to watch, but with a mysterioulsy wide margin at the end. The game seemed close most of the way to me, but the final score doesn't reflect that at all.
Side note: I took Minny +22 points...Blake Countess owes me $10.

Gallon just ran out of.....gas.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||IMO, Fitz is the team's best||
IMO, Fitz is the team's best runner. But like anyone else, he needs at least a little bit of space in which to operate. Therefore, I would like to see a few swing passes to him, kind of like the one in the ND game. Bottom line: get Fitz in position to succeed, and get the ball in his hands.
Also, as noted above, Gallon and Funchess will likely get lots of attention, so could this be the game in which Chesson breaks out? I love his special teams play, but there is tons more potential with this kid we haven't seen yet. Secret weapon - we need one.
Edited to add: if not (or maybe in addition to) Chesson, how great would it be to see Jake Butt hopefully having a break out game as the new "secret weapon"?
I really hope Dileo is healthy. He will be needed.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Assuming the ineffective||
Assuming the ineffective spread against sparty you've referenced was when Denard was QB, I think the style of offense was not the issue. It was the predictability of that offense, IMO. And turnovers.
If Gardner protects the ball, his legs and passing should be enough to get a UM victory 13 days from now. The D should be able to hold MSU in check.

Then again, those teams of which you speak usually had good defenses which helped create blowouts in those games. That allowed backups to play and precluded major records being broken.

Let's see how shiny and happy you are when Al Borges runs right into the middle of your fancy little tailgate.
Just kidding. I think this IU game should/could be VERY cathartic for the UM fan base. Man, I hope so. Go Blue!!
|8 weeks 5 days ago||The simple act of merely||
The simple act of merely looking forward to the Indiana game is a step in the right direction for fixing the fragile psyche of this blog. Beating Indiana could be the most important victory this blog has ever witnessed (yes, it felt weird typing that).
But if Michigan loses to Indiana this Saturday, Brian may have to start a new feature on SBNation called TYIS (Y = year).
|8 weeks 5 days ago||He consistently outruns||
He consistently outruns everyone on the field, at least in that footage. His speed appears to be legit, even if some FAKES are in order for the actual 40 time. Also, his size really stands out among those other kids, so he may acutally be what his listed size is.
Regardless of all that, he definitely loves to play physical football and HIT some dudes, which is something I like to see in a Safety or LB.

I'll feel pretty good if he somehow ends up at Cass Tech.
|9 weeks 1 day ago||If you're playing against||
If you're playing against Oregon, it's probably a touchdown.
If you're playing against a team who is trying to run the ball, but simply cannot, it probably doesn't matter at all (I swear I am not referring to 2013 Michigan).
|9 weeks 2 days ago||In many of the Carr years,||
In many of the Carr years, they would lose some bad games early, and I'd boycott the team for a while and go bowhunting every weekend. By the time I was done, they'd have put together a nice winning streak just in time to make the OSU game seem important. Then I'd jump back in front of the TV only to have Tressel and his boys kick me in the sack. Being a fan can be hell.
I think I need to start bowhunting again. Soon.

Deservedly so. And a win against Indiana (iffy, sadly) shouldn't get us back in the Top 25, either.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||I know where you're coming||
I know where you're coming from, but even an objective, realistic UM fan has to be scared as hell about the rest of the schedule. What reason do we have for optimism? We have dodged bullets against craps teams so far this year and finally faced one that wasn't quite so crappy. What will happen against the decent teams that are coming next?
The OL is the root cause of most of the problems we've had so far, and it isn't going to get better overnight. No ability to run or pass protect with any consistency spells more ugliness.

|9 weeks 3 days ago||This whole season has been||
This whole season has been the worst OL performance ever at Michigan. It's incredibly bad. The numbers and the poor quality of opponents don't lie. The DL cannot rush worth a shit, but they aren't half as bad as the OL.

As such, it does indeed appear that you missed his point.
|10 weeks 5 days ago||I think that it's what you||
I think that it's what you said, plus the fact that Kalis had been mentioned as a possible candidate to get playing time as a true Freshman, and is now a starter as a RS Fr. Combine all those factors with the analysis of someone who really doesn't break down game film, and the "Kalis is obviously better" notion is sure to result.
|10 weeks 6 days ago||The OL||
The OL had better be much improved by November, or we're going to be in for some rough times around here. I, too, am very much looking forward to seeing how Bryant and Glasgow respond this weekend. Side note: is anyone else surprised that our boys are a 19.5 point favorite this Saturday?

It'll be interesting to see it unfold.

To be fair, but hopefully not to spoil the fun, he obviously was caught off-guard by the pass and didn't really get a chance to show off his true hops. Not saying he has a 40-inch vertical or anything, but in reality, he could probably outjump most of us on this here board.
|14 weeks 16 hours ago||So many awesome moments||
So many awesome moments captured here, making it hard to choose. The Chesson block was a really big play that helped Gallon score from a distance. Hoke shrugging will live on at MGoBlog forever. However, I voted for Fitz's incredible cutback, not only for how awesome it was and how it helped to gain valuable, tough yards on the ground, but in light of his gruesome injury last November, I can't help but feel good for the guy. Fitz FTW!
|14 weeks 2 days ago||If Devin Gardner continues to||
If Devin Gardner continues to play at an elite level and earns awards and trophies and goes high in the NFL draft, then recruiting and signing "the next Devin Gardner" becomes at least a little easier. Perhaps a lot easier.
I am totally on board with dual threat QB's from here on out. Look how many times we've been shredded by those types over the years. Look what Devin did to ND Saturday. Do want.

We got owned in the trenches (both O and D) and still won. Nice to be on this side of a maddeningly good dual threat QB proving himself unstoppable.
But Lou Holtz still thinks ND will win this game.
I won't jinx the team by opining about how they should be undefeated going into the OSU game.

Devin scrambling is good. Cut down picks and he is all Big 10.
Shane throws a nice ball, especially rolling out. Looked confident, but it was CMU.
Cam Gordon played really well. Good to see. He has been through a lot.
Stribling looks legit. I was always confident in his recruitment. Screw the stars. Hail Mattison!
Gedeon seems to be a pure football player. Number 42 seemed to be in on lots of special teams plays, and he was always around the ball when he got in on defense.
Kalis was very solid.
Norfleet HAS to eventually break one, right?? Guarantee he got his ass chewed for trying to field that rolling punt early on. Guarantee it won't happen again.
Too many penalties and turnovers.

I really don't care how Sparty looks for the first couple of months, because I am 100% sure that they will play their best football once UM comes to EL. Having said that, this is a team with a lot of question marks on offense but a stout defense. They are who we thought they are.

It's been reported that George is actually 6-3, FWIW. Pictures of him next to other recruits seem to verify this. But to your point, I've never seen a 6-5 safety, and even a 6-3 safety is likely pretty rare.
