Failing a test in college when tests are random- not too big a deal- many players smoke and do fine.
Failing a test you know you must take- idiotic. Either he doesn't care or is too big an idiot- either way makes him look pretty bad- and won't help him with the draft.

59 years old with 1,098 wins. She could have had a couple decades left with who knows how many wins. She built Tennessee into arguably the top program in the country (or at least right behind UConn and way ahead of anyone else).
Besides being perhaps th etop coach (man or woman in the country) she seemed like a class-act as well. Wish her and the family the best!
|3 years 32 weeks ago||This is a terrible and tragic||
This is a terrible and tragic story- and my condolences go out to David and his family.
It's obviously no replacement- but I am happy he will be at a place like Michigan where the coaches treat the players as family, and instill strong virtues and respect the student in student athlete. I hope he can find support from the UM community and team- and that he and his family can get the support they need.
|3 years 32 weeks ago||Good luck||
Best of luck to him in MD!
Hard to see him go- would have been huge to have him for what is looking like a fantastic year coming up.
But for the students its best to be where you are happy- and I hope he has found that.

|3 years 34 weeks ago||Who decides?||
Players have to agree to a redshirt correct?
Do coaches identify players they want to redshirt and just ask? Can players essentially be forced to redshirt?
If the player decides not to and doesn't want to do 5 years who is anyone to say that's wrong. Even if it hurts the teams chances ultimately by not having a player have a good fifth year instead of doing nothing year one it's the kids life/education...
Looking for someone who knows more about how the process works!
|3 years 34 weeks ago||Any Meyer is not a good coach||
Any Meyer is not a good coach comment is just silly.
Sure argue Hoke may be better- and arguement may be made. But Meyer has a NC, success everywhere he's been, and is a terrific recruiter and will be great at OSU- maybe not te best- but becasue he hasn't coached in the Big Ten yet means nothing about how good of a coach he is.
|3 years 34 weeks ago||CHART?||
Can we get a chart on this (any MGoNlogger with more time than me...)?
Maybe a HS list, a college list, and an NFL list?
Could it have this info:

14 - MSU
Not too bad having 5 of top 14!
|3 years 35 weeks ago||Dwon by 39||
Down 1,296 to 1,257
|3 years 35 weeks ago||Why leave? I agree- why||
I agree- why leave? Is it to play elsewhere? Seems like a medical hardship at ND would be the way to go- free education at a top school is hard to beat.
Real sad to see anyone face this type of situation though- and wish him the best with regards to recovery.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||I never knew either.||
I never knew either. Fantastic write up!
Real interesting how their program does work. Have to respect the service academies and their teams- with the way modern football works it is just so tough for them to compete but its always nice to see them win (just hopefully not against us!).
|3 years 35 weeks ago||True some Catholics may||
True some Catholics may choose ND because of religion but its silly to question why someone would want to play for ND (meant as general reply not just for you).
One of the biggest fan bases- means many recruits grew up fans (also national fanbase as opposed to regional like many schools).
Popular in media- no matter how good they are they get top-5 exposure year in year out
Popular in culture- movies (Rudy), hats, merchandise- so it has appeal in that sense
Success- Yeah they are not the ND of old- but they are consistently a BCS threat- and with BCS rules if they qualify they get into a BCS bowl- thats appealing
Tradition- Hard to compete with ND tradtion (in no way can it be a negative- maybe not heads up against UM but even that will be debated by many)
Lack of recent success- many top programs have not won recently- and most either don't have NC's or not for long time- so its unfair to use that as a major point
Coaching- Don't buy it- but many are saying it- he has results in his stops- and coach's atitdue and personality can be a plus to some and a negative to others- seems to work as far as getting good players for him though
Anything else?- All the rest I've read or hear people talking about is nonsense...
Yeah its fun to hate on ND- but it gets silly when there is so much talk about ND being an odd choice for a rectuit- makes UM fans seem obnoxious IMO- lots more positives for ND than negatives

|3 years 37 weeks ago||I think the better way to||
I think the better way to view it is as favorite and as underdog. Many conferences have lower ranked teams so should have losing records because they play top teams.
A better chart would have two rows- as underdog, and as favored team.
May not change any of that right now (have not looked thorugh the bracket)- but it is a much fairer way to show how conferences performed.
|3 years 37 weeks ago||Big Ten Rankings||
Rose Bowl- Michigan (v. Oregon- USC in title)- said we were Big Ten winner
Fiesta Bowl- Wisconsin (v. Rutgers)- put them as # 2
Note all Big Ten Ranks will be one higher than acutality with 2 teams in BCS
Capital One- Big Ten 2 - Nebraska (v. Georgia)
Outback- Big Ten 3- Michigan State (v. South Carolina)
Gator- Big Ten 4/5- Iowa (v. Florida)
Insight- Big Ten 4/5- Illinois (v. Oklahoma St)
Meineke- Big Ten 6- Penn State (v. Texas)
TickeCity- Big Ten 7- Purdue (v. Tulsa)
Little Caesares- Big Ten 8- Northwestern (v. Northern Illinois)
That's 9 teams:
Ohio State inelligible- so obviously they would mix up the order
Not Qualifying- Indiana & Minnesota
|3 years 37 weeks ago||Winning by 5||
A 4 seed winning by 5 is way too close. All top 4 seeds (top 16 teams) really should all win by 10+ and not have close calls. Not sure why the prediction is so close- Ohio is not a very good team (as most 13s aren't). No they aren't terrible- but if they give us a close game it will not bode well (although teams have had close calls and made runs- I feel that early close calls expose weaknesses and overseeding more than anythine else)
|3 years 37 weeks ago||It'd be weird if we played||
It'd be weird if we played Memphis and Duke just like at the start of the season- but I think that part of the bracket looks pretty decent for us if it happens like that.
Yeah I hate Duke just like everyone else- but enough with the refs favoring them stuff. Fans see what they want to see and everyone hates Duke so 50-50 calls are all horrible calls in fans eyes similar to how any close call in a Michigan game that doesn't go our way was clearly bad officiating...

PSU getting top recruits seems to hurt OSU a lot more than Michigan- is that due to recent thinking with OSU stealing PSU recruits and this- or is PSU getting top guys likely a good thing (relative to UM-OSU rivalry) for Michigan because it will keep OSU down with recruiting more than us
|3 years 37 weeks ago||Good weekend||
Excited of the weekend.
If we get a couple commits it will let us be even more selective for our last recruits. It seems like the staff is keeping spots for top targets- so there can't be too many other spots not counting those left- so recruits are really feeling the pressure to commit it seems like
|3 years 37 weeks ago||Damn||
That's a huge project! Pretty remarkable!
Glad he also supports UM!
|3 years 37 weeks ago||Too bad||
That will hurt their seeding too- that stinks for them. It's good for the Big Ten when Indiana is a good (if not great) program- so it has been good seeing them get back to that level- too bad this could mean a quick tournament for them.
|3 years 37 weeks ago||Rooting for no upsets||
I'd rather have no upsets. I think it's best for tournament preparation and seeding if we play OSU and MSU- although playing Indiana/Wisconsin instead of MSU wouldn't be too bad- but if we win today it'd be best to play OSU instead of Purdue IMO.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||I agree- except I would add||
I agree- except I would add that not all tweets are equal. Tweeting about hating OSU or trash-talking may warrant a discussion with coach, but is much better than tweeting something that is an NCAA violation (like we are dealing with now). I would (and the staff likely does) have a clear policy in place- they are allowed to tweet except for these things (whatever the staff eems innapropriate) and for each of those things here are the consequences- with NCAA things being a more serious offense because it can potentially hurt the whole team and school more than tweeting something that does little more than potentially embarass the player/staff/school
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Syracuse and Kentucky are 1||
Syracuse and Kentucky are 1 locks.
Duke/UNC will have one
Kansas/Mizzou wil have one
Unless somehow all 4 of those teams fail to make the conference finals we have no shot at a 1. And chance all four of those teams lose and we beat OSU and MSU is very small. And even if it happens the above teams may very well still have the edge. We can get a 2- but absolutely no chance at a 1 in my mind.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||3 seed||
If we win against Minn/NW I htink we get a 3- because an OSU (if they win as expected) loss is nothing to be ashamed of and Georgetown lost- not sure nay of the 4 seeds now could jump us? If we lose then maybe there is a case- but I feel ok about our chances of being a three seed- lots of top wins and a split big ten- the 4 seed players right now will have a hard time jumping that. Even if we get a 4 seed thats not too big a deal- think we can do alright from a 4- not too much harder than being a 3 since the 1/4 matchup is not too much worse than a 2/3 IMO.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Yes the defense was garbage-||
Yes the defense was garbage- and there were many issues and very underwhelming results- but the team that won a BCS bowl was mostly his guys. I think it's fair to say he had a big part in that. His system and his coaching strategies (particularly his defense) did not maximize the talent he had- but he pulled in lotsof the talent that won a BCS bowl game.
It's fair for him to be bitter and upset- I think the RR bashing gets too carried away- if he did as bad a job as many people try to claim then how could a team he mostly built be a succesful team right away?
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Thanks!||
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Minnesota does not scare me||
Minnesota does not scare me at all- so I would not mind playing them.
NW does scare me- but I'd like to see them play in the tourament- so I hope they get another win. Plus if we win the tournament maybe we can get a 2-seed if everything else goes right- and we tkae the toughest road- which is NW, OSU, MSU
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Good stuff! Can you tell us||
Can you tell us what the starting OL will likely be for the three years or so projecting out current players and the last 2 recruiting classes- it'd be neat to know who you think will get times and at what points in their development.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||I agree with that||
I agree with that thinking.
Seems similar to LB recruiting- take an early commit (McCray)- hold a spot for best guy (Levenberry) and see if another spot is possible with how the other positions go and if the "best available" guy might be a LB.
Seems like the staff has a three step plan:
1- EARLY RECRUITING: Make a pool of top talent- 4-5 stars mostly- and if someone is willing to commit early they have a leg up or a spot.
2- TOP 4-5 STARS: Hold spots for players who are studs (Levenberry) that will have a spot kept- and can be filled with either another position players who has interest or "best available"
3- POSITION LIKES: Some positions seem to have particular needs for recruits. WR's may not be top 4-5 star guys but more the best guys that fir the tall, quick, strong WR for the system like Dukes- so some positions may not get super recruits in the same way.
I'd be happy with any of the wideouts you said- especially Treadwell- wonder if any of them will be treated like Levenberry and have a spot secured or if its first to pull the trigger?
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Texas||
That's what TExas does- they wrap up the kids from Texas early.
Look at all the Texas talent on the top 100- 7/15 of them are going to Texas.
30- Texas AM
54- Texas AM
28 (Morris)- UM
99- Elmer- ND
They have a huge advantage with so many Texas kids commiting early and so many top TX recruits. MI can't just take top MI guys and get a top 10 class like Texas can. It is harder to get a top class when there are less guys who immediately sign- like the top TX guys who root for Texas and sign right away.
TX 15, MI 2 for top 100- that's why Texas can put up quick monster recruiting classes and why it is so amazing Michigan is able to do that without the top MI talent. Ohio State can do similarly in Ohio what Texas does- but not with quite as many top recruits- (Ohio has 5 top 100 recruits- three to OSU, Thomas to us, and one uncommited.)

Yeah a small school would help him get some time- but just think about how crazy it is to have a BCS football body as far as maturity when you are a sophomore. What is he 15 or 16- and he is already showing that he can be a big time player- I don't care how small your school is that's crazy.
You see it in basketball too- some of these guys are just men among boys in high school- it's just crazy that seems to be the case for him already as a Sophomore.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Sophomore Recruiting||
You have to be a beast to get BCS offers as a Soph.
Lots of recruits weren't on varsity or were not getting nearly enough time to be recruited as Sophomores- dude must be good
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Disgusting||
I can think of few things more disturbing than calling your team in to rough up a party because they did not want univited guests to attend.
If everyone involved is not disciplined (with the main players all removed from the team) it will not be acceptable to me.
A sense of entitlement, violence (especially towards women), and disrespecting non-athletes are all serious issues. Any player that participated in this- that either started this or came in to support their teammates in this nonsensible way lack any of the decency required to represent their school as student athletes.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Why is the rule being broken?||
Whether or not the rule is fair/makes sense/modern enough/realistic why is it being broken?
It is the rule- people know the rule.
Yeah it a small rule to break- but how are the players allowed to do this? It seems like all the rules need to be made very clear to all players so that we have no issues with breaking rules.
This is so avoidable....
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Good read||
Thanks for putting this together- nice to visualize how great the talent interested or signed with Michigan is right now
|3 years 38 weeks ago||CA||
Obviously Hoke coached in CA. Were his classes there mostly CA guys? How big of an advantage for recruiting from CA will it likely be in the future?
If we could get both these guys (or just one) that seems like it'd be a huge get!
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Big for ND||
That's a big get for ND.
Yeah with 4 TE in 2 classes not a huge issue not getting him to go blue-but he appears to be a hell of a talent.
Best of luck to him (except when they play us).
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Congrats||
His years here at Michigan were not the greatest but there were some good times and he is a good coach and person and Harvard is a good story- glad itis going well for him
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Those are all interesting||
Those are all interesting examples- but the whole point (as I see it) of compiling data like this is to see general trends.
Many fans (and perhaps talent evaluators) get stuck up on examples that break from the norm to deny trends or to skew their perceptions of players- this data shows very clearly that the more starts you have the more likely you are to be drafted- with a couple unique counter-examples where for some positions 4* and 5* are not much different.
Yes 3* will outperform and get drafted above 4* and 5*- but there's a reason we get so excited about the massive number of 4* recruits we are pulling in- they do outperform 3* players as is demonstrated by a whole wealth of data just shared with us.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Great pic! Will be some||
Will be some LB's in that position it seems with Michigan- hard to go wrong with LB's in this class it appears- but I really hope we get Levenberry!

Why worry about the stupid things OSU fans say?
I'm sure most people on this blog have said stupid/horrible OSU jokes (pizza delivery jokes etc.). Yeah it was stupid and in bad taste- but so what- most jokes that are said are stupid with many being in bad taste.
Think baout how many Michigan fans have MSU family and make comments- I imagine many of them probably were distateful or crossed a line as well.
If its not a key OSU figure or player I'm not too interested in dumb things said about the rivalry.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Belein||
Give Beilein some more credit. Because Michigan is a bigger football school than basketball Hoke will always overshadow him and be the main athletic face of the school but Beilein built this program back up! Flip it around and ask if Beilein has changed everything? He had this program turned around and heading in this direction before Hoke was here. The recent revival of our two big sports started with basketball and making the NCAA a couple times and coming two inches away on a last second shot from a nba draft pick leaving early from beating Duke arguably the top team of the last couple of decades.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Soccer||
Anyone that regularly trashes the worlds most popular sport as being stupid has no business being paid to discuss his sports opinions.

It is getting old thta they are ahead of us- but rankings means much less than seeding- and we have a three seed looking pretty safe so I don't worry too much being behind Wisonsin even though it is stupid

It's nice to see the recognition. We have an advantage at Michigan due to our great academics universally known branding and rich tradition. Not may at UM feel the Fab Five years didn't happen. Those years meant somehtng when talking about how good UM basketball was in comparison to other teams. Yes OSU cheated but they also kicked our ass for most of the last decade. They were a much better team. We beat them when their program was collapsing so it doesn't even feel the same.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Scoreboard||
How awesome would it be to walk on the field to highlights blasting. With the best stadium and tradition how can a recruit not start dreaming of an amazing UM career?
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Neat thread!||
Who would have thought when a couple yrs ago we had our worst football and basketball seasons under new coaches that just a few years later we'd be asking when the last time both programs were doing so well?
Interesting how we've gotten to this point- and it was not always pretty- but it's great being here now and seeing even better days ahead!
Great time to root for the Wolverines!
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Offer List||
Not a bad offer list huh?
I wouldn't mind having those choices- but I get how stressful the whole process could be.
Kid will definitely find himself in a good spot! (Hopefully here with us!)
|3 years 38 weeks ago||1-on-1||
I like picturing how intense those family 1-on-1's must have been,
Having a dad be in the NBA must be a real plus for understanding what is needed to get to that level.
Think of the quality coaching he got everyday from his dad that most kids can't get close to.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Team game||
Another reason why he was so great for us was he played so well within the system.
He didn't take too many shots- and didn't force as many as he someitmes does.
If he can get to the line like that and not hog the shooting this team will make a long run.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Interesting||
Never had thought about that making a difference in performance. Thought of it as more of a comfort/intimidation/atmosphere thing (which is still a huge part of it).
What is clear is that winning on the road in a major conference is real tough- and what sepereates the elite from the good teams. Glad it may be a factor for our scucess at home- but to be an elite team the road record needs to be much better.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Don't wait||
I say don't wait thinking you have a real good shot at the other top LB's (if it's the case he's above McCray- in the coaches mind obviously you take- and the rest of this arguement is moot)). Hoping to get two guys better and passing on Gedeon for that may lead to no or only 1 top LB. He has an offer for a reason he's a top guy himself. If he says yes you take it and force the other guys to decide quickly if you have room for one more- or decide if they are good enough to take another roster spot if you only planned on two LB.
I know there's still tons of time- but if he wants to commit early take him right away even if the staff has McCray above him IMO.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Awesome!||
Love the post! Always love your updates and insight! Keep it coming!
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Like it!||
I like seeing us go after guys(and get some) that SEC and other non Big Ten teams are going for. I think to win a title we need to beat those top teams over key players and to become a consistent top five recruiting team so I like this offer and I like that we have a shot with guys like this against that type of competition
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Love it!||
Love the bloody face pic idea. Novak epitomizes all the positive changes for our basketball team and the virtues of UM. I'm a basketball fan over football so I like the idea of it in the banner with football but i get it is a football first blog so can understand why it may just be football in any future banner.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||I was speaking more||
I was speaking more generally- looking at this class not sure there is one- which is part of why I think there's not much downside to taking him.
I was thinking more generally that if you take more players at a position than expected early that the likely result is one of the lower ranked guys to perhaps leave thinking he won't play.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Take him!||
If he wants to come you'd be crazy to say no. Great position to have depth at- and we will have few players with experience to play.
What's the worst that can happen? Another OL decides to leave I suppose- although likely an inferior one.
Unless Hoke told recruits don't worry no more OL you take him.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Fantastic!||

Glad he won't transfer. Many people wanted him to be a starter with early speculation (before Burke showed how great he is). He provides muc hneeded depth
|3 years 39 weeks ago||If he can after 3 yrs he||
If he can after 3 yrs he would have been a beast for those years- and although it'd be sad and you don't wnat players doing it too often- its so hard to for the NFL it shouldn't really be an issue
|3 years 39 weeks ago||174||
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Last hurdle?||
PSU should be quite doable- this is the game that I worry about. Last home game for Illinois (and Weber most likely). They don't want to further embarass themeselves, and they have a lot of talent.
Hope we can pull it out- becasue if we do I see us being very focused and able to take care of business with PSU.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Go Blue!||
Let's get both basketball teams in the NCAA!
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Interesting||
Big Ten really doesn't compete for titles anway- so why not be radical?
It'd be like the MAC saying screw the BCS- we have no shot anyway.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||It depends||
That's not necessarily true because not all schools are competing from the same pool of players. Some schools will recruit for a certain style (RR looking for slot receivers) and some stay local (home state/region) and some have certain areas they recruit heavily (RR and Florida).
So Big Ten schools that recruit Ohio players, and recruit top 250 recruit levels will definitely impact OSU. But lots of the Big Ten schools don't seem to overlap much with OSU. I think UM and PSU are the biggest factors for making recruiting tougher for OSU. Then MSU and Wisconsin to a lesser degree. The other schools will fight over a small number of recruits but largely don't seem to impact OSU too much.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Second Priority||
Yeah it may suck to be a clear second choice- but if that's the team you want to play for and grew up rooting for you take it and don't worry about how you got it.
It's kinda like Norfleet with UM.
It could definitely work for Meyer. Most Ohio kids love OSU- and if they get the offer many take right away. SO if its late in the game and they have the chance to play for him and join what will likely be a top class of course many kids will take it.
I do agree though it may help UM who will always hit Ohio up early- where many kids will commit before OSU offers or shows much interest when OSU may have been trying to fill out with better national talent to come back and get those kids- it may make OSU get 3* talent on their midwest backup plan instead of 4* if we get those top guys early.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||I agree. 2 conference road||
2 conference road games are never givens.
But Illinois has collapsed and Penn St is garbage. If we lose to PSU we deserve to be a 5 seed for NCAA. So we should win both games- but yes it is very much not a given.
However, for rooting gotta root for the chance for the title.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Go NW||
Want NW to win and then have OSU beat MSU- so that we split Big Ten if we win out and have outright 2 seed because OSU would have one more loss.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Personality||
I agree its a concern when you hear some ocmments like this- but its about character and determination.
If its a comment made due to entitlement or animosity, or just ego thats an issue
If its a comment made because you are legitimately a top player with great effort and incredible determination- it is better.
It's really just a bad way of saying something like: "Any GM who takes one of these guys over me will regret it" which we hear a lot.
Tru- you have to be careful about how you make your comments- and how they may be heard- but I don't find an issue with the comment.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||It's that type of story that||
It's that type of story that just makes you feel sick. College sports have a special feel to them- even though with each scandle that is deteriorating.
Especially college basketball with the classic powerhouses of : UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, etc. there is such steep tradition and a long line of successful players and coaches.
To see a program like UCLA lose its way and break from that tradition is hard to see. It also goes to show that building a program the right way is what leads to long term success. Duke joined the big boys of college basketball by winning hte right way under coach K. UM is competing for a Big Ten title with players that had MAC and lower Big Ten interest as recruits in many cases.
I'm glad UM is building a program the right way now under Beilein. Stories like this tarnish the good memories and leave you empty- like what happened with the Fab Five and our own issues with men's b-ball.
I want UM to be successful- but never at the expense of the traditions and expectations that need to be upheld. I am glad that it at least feels that way with men's basketball and football now. Beilein was (maybe still is) in charge of the coaches ethics thing the NCAA did as I recall, and Hoke is very well respected- and all of our recent recruits have by all measures been outstanding people who have upheld or even raised the level of expectations for what it means to be a Michigan athlete.
I feel horrible about UCLA- but it also helps me feel proud about what we are building here at UM

Name the best sporting event
If that question is asked you are likely to get one of the following answers:
The first is because of the plethora of sports and the drama and the medals and the patriotism- hard to compete with the sheer volume of the Olympics
World Cup and March Madness are very similar. You have big underdogs with amazing victories, you have huge upsets, and you have crazy passion
Super Bowl is just reflecting media attention and the huge popularity of the NFL
No one would say NCAA football championship. If any college football it is regualr season rivalries (OSU-UM, Bama-Auburn etc.) or classic bowls that have tradition.
NCAA Championship has no tradition. Fans love tournaments. Fans love college football. I never have understood why increasing the number of post-season games (other bowls would still happen outside of the tournament), while adding drama, and increasing hugely the number of teams (and thus fans) who are competing for a championship.
The championship game got a lot of fans to watch- because fans like champions. College B-ball is about declaring a champion for each and every game- fans love the drama and the dream that their team has a shot.
There really needs to be a tournament for all these reasons- and yes- those charts show that.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Players opinion||
When the stadium was redone a lot of the thinking was what the staff and players wanted (more noise from the stadium design).
So UM has an interest in thinking about players and staff (to get a tactical advantage). Is there any research about how much any of the color-out, or music impacts anything on the field? Or do the players have really strong opinions- for example do recruits come and see that and like it- or do players encourage these type of events to happen to get a better home-field advantage?
I'd be interested to see if anyone knows those answers- or if this is first and foremost a way for the school to capitalize on sales/advertising for money (which I think is a fine idea).
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Visual||
Does someone have a link (or maybe something they made) that can help visualize all the changes of conferences of late.
I think I know all of them- but there has been so much movement it'd be neat to see an image that shows it all (or a link to a video from ESPN etc that shows it visualy).
It always helps to grasp all of the change when you can see it as an image instead of a list.

Just like Hoke talks about family- UM fandom is like family too- and I'm glad this blog can help bring you joy when you need it most!
Best of luck with everything!
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Sad Side of Big Time Sports||
It's about money... tradition, honoring fans who live and die for their teams over those that donate- that sadly has no place if a program wants to be a bigtime program
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Go Blue||
Love seeing the UM games on the top list- especially during hte season.
Under the lights ND was a great idea for revenue and appeal!
20 million for the 1st LSU Bama game- that's nuts- only 4 million more for Championship. Pretty clear everyone was thinking that first game was the championship with that many viewers

I'm a legit Vermonter!
|3 years 39 weeks ago||#7||
If Denard is not throwing picks at close to a 1:1 ratio, and Toussaint plays like he did 2nd half meaning Denard doesn't have to run 20 times and likely get hurt- and our D stays top 25- then yeah we are a top 10 team with the best odds to win the big ten. Any of those things happen (lots of picks, Toussaint isn't a 100 yds/game back, or D steps back) then we are looking at a very tight big ten race with lots of marginal teams competing (no top ten teams in conference with the champ having two losses in conference).
|3 years 39 weeks ago||No||
Not sure who that is- although there are only 620,000 Vermonters so I may know him.
425,000 living UM alumni, and total UM football attendance is usually ~775,000 (7 home games)- so not a whole lot of us Vermonters- but I do not know him
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Sanders||
Although for Sanders lots of Lions fans are UM fans so many of those who would vote for Sanders happily would likely vote Howard instead since UM>Lions for the majority of those who like both.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Ok article||
Not a bad article but it doesn't offer much we didn't know (other than he played soccer and wasn't a big football player until late). The ND/OSU connections were long known.
He's a Michigan Man now though- and you better believe he'll have a chip on his shoulder for those two big games- it's a neat story but I can already imagine it getting overplayed on TV every time we play either OSU or ND (particularly ND with his grandpa).
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Seeding||
Possible outcomes in my estimation:
2 seed- not likely possible- only can happen with split BIG 10 title and tourney title and likely another likely 2 seed losing in their tourney early
3 seed- Win out regular season, make it to semi-finals to have good chance- to Big Ten championship game definate- if we lose game left in regular season need to make it to finals and maybe win it
4 seed- Can probably have one regular season loss and make it to semi finals
5 seed- If we win out regular season not likely. One/two losses to end season and don't make big ten semis then we get 5
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Burke||
Zeller is one hell of a player- sometimes it gets frustrating with the Burke threads about how he's an easy pick for Freshman of the year etc.
Yes Burke is amazing- and it's stupid to say he's not in contention- but there's a reason the two of them each have 6- they are both crazy good. It will be a two man race- and to say either has a huge edge is pretty silly right now. It's especially islly because those on this blog likely watch most UM games and only Indiana games when they played UM or maybe MSU or OSU.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Denard cover||
A Denard cover would be huge!
You know every recruit plays the game- and Denard epitomizes awesomeness- it'd be nice for recruiting and UM image of being cool for that to happen.
Plus awesome for UM pride and game sells for UM fanbase
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Timetable||
With many expecting a UM commit- lots of other LB's will likely be watching this closely.
So I think it is entirely possible that recruits setting timetables and commiting quickly ca nhelp motivate some players to commit quicker. On the flip-side it may scare some recruits away who want more time and may see any open spots go away
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Solid Recruits||
I think my favorite part of the recruiting haul is the interviews they give.
It makes me feel proud to hear them all speak the right way, say the right things, and speak about their love of all things Michigan! These kids love the school and staff and are very committed- gotta love it!
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Yeah Kiper has him high- as I||
Yeah Kiper has him high- as I remember most others were lower- more in the 4-7 range of centers.
Perhaps I am mistaken though- haven't looked again at the rankings of late.
Thanks for proving me wrong- hope he does go as high as Kiper thinks!
|3 years 39 weeks ago||We'd all love to see him||
We'd all love to see him picked in the second round- but not a chance of that- too many center's ahead of him on the board accroding to all the experts.
Hard to figure out exactly why since he as a beast in college and had a good combine- but the BFL talent evaluators aren't nearly high enough on him to imagine him going in round 2.
I think everyone here at MGOBLOG seems him becoming a decent player- so let's just root for him to find himself on a team where he can be utilized an dprove he deserved to be picked higher!
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Good point about 9 picks in||
Good point about 9 picks in the first 6 rounds.
If RG3 can be a Brown I pull the trigger- to be a good NFL team you desperately need a franchise QB and he at least can be that. Otherwise I hope they just go for the best talent so they can get the pieces in place to be respectable and maybe make a run at the playoffs in the near-future, or at least be ready to put the pedal to the metal when we final get a decent QB
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Interesting points about||
Interesting points about college stats/comparison.
I'm a Browns fan too and I think there are plenty of skill players to get- but if you think RG3 is a legit franchise QB and you can get him you do.
Stats in college are one thing- but NFL is about physical talent and abilities. RG3 can throw deep, is fast, and is strong. Colt is an ok QB, and maybe RG3 won't be any better in the NFL- but Colt is not a franchise guy- not even that close- RG3 may not be either- but he COULD be- and the Browns need that hope at QB

5, 7, 13, 20, and 22.... damn
5 of the top 22- especially this early.... we are doing some work
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Damn||
Someone is getting a real good player lower in the draft- he's going to be a steal!
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Too bad||
It's too bad he largely misses out on this season- but he should get another year and can be part of what all of us hope (and think) can be a pretty incredible next couple of seasons!
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Fair points||
That's all fair.
All I am saying is that it is specualtion. He is a great coach (an ass sure- but a hell of a coach). Ohio has all the advantages- better talent pool, better recent history, and they just had one of the most dominant swings in the rivalries history.
To have our own swing we need to execute everything perfectly.
We need top recruits, and to steal OH recruits.
We need to beat OSU over a long period like they just beat us to change the balance of power.
We also need big ten titles.
Those things have been givens for OSU and we have failed at all of them for a decade almost. Now that needs to change- and to say that because Meyer is a question mark in any way means we will do those things is foolish.
Yes we are off to a good start- but its just that- a start- and that doesn't change the last decade.
We have a window to catch up to OSU then we can talk about surpassing them- let's catch them first- and until we have titles, a long stretch of OSU victories, and out-recruit them like they did us for so long- the talk should be when we catch OSU- not when we surpass them
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Buzz Kill||
Hate to be a buzz-kill but I think past success is a good indicator of future success. UF was high pressure like OSU. Plus he had success at Utah as well.
Obviously OSU may not be great- and its unlikely he has UF level success because that's nearly impossible- but I think it is foolish to think OSU won't always be good.
OSU>UM for a decade- the decade al lrecruits watched. And Ohio>Michigan for recruits so they have an advantage.
Yes Hoke is a beast recruiting, yes we won this year, yes we are on an upswing-- but its silly to think we will be better than OSU because Meyer in OSU is uncertain. They have recent history, better recruiting turf, and a great coach- at best it looks even for near future-- but that a hell of a lot better than the last decade.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Awesome||
Look at all the top programs and coaches and they dominate at home.
Coach K, Self, and all the other tops take care of business at home. To be a big time program you have to be near perfect at home. If we want to be a NC team year-in-year-out then this needs to be what to expect at home moving forward. If not then we will always be a step away from the big time players in college ball.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||College kickers I imagine||
College kickers I imagine kick it less far than NFL so touchbacks won't be as frequent.
Plus it's a health concern. If it reduces injuries and helps players stay on the field and be healthy then its a good move. If that's overstated and it has little impact or none- then you could argue that it takes away fro mthe game too much- but this is a classic better safe than sorry- and safety and health of UM players is key
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Don't think we can get a 2||
Don't think we can get a 2 seed without winning the Big Ten (or co-champs) and Big Ten Tourney. OSU and MSU will both be above us (at least in terms of potential seed- OSU may be baove us while technically lower in Big Ten standings)- and no way Big Ten gets 3 top 2-seeds- so we'd need to win Big-Ten and have OSU slip to a 3-seed in my estimation.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||It is pretty neat about Stu||
It is pretty neat about Stu and Courtney.
I could never really hate Turner though- and I know that sounds weird- but he played hard and was wonderful to watch (minus the fact it meant OSU success). Hard to hate a player like Turner eve nif he plays at OSU.
Glad for the women's bball love on the blog too!

|3 years 40 weeks ago||Beilein recruits||
Beilein recruits always turn up better than people thought.
He had to scrape together this years seniors class- and all the classes since have been full of guys who always have risen with regards to ranking as recruiting has gone on. Even next years class with top 100 talent has been the same as GR has been a huge riser!
Even with top recruits being the new norm thehy still are rising- great to see how he knows both what types of players he needs and which players are being overlooked/under-recruited so he can swoop in and get them before they blow up
|3 years 40 weeks ago||Congrats!||
Another reason to be proud about this amazing senior class!

Not recruiting (and/or not executing) defensive talent is why RR failed here.
The offense was great- everything else.... not so much
|3 years 40 weeks ago||Question on Centers||
Are most players that ultimately end up at Center in NCAA recruited as such- or do they develop OL into centers during their careers more often?
Are players recruited to be centers- or compete for it and end up as OL if they don't pan as a center?
|3 years 40 weeks ago||Fine with me if the top||
Fine with me if the top college guys you want don't project well for NFL.
Molk will be a low draft pick and he was so big for us! Sure I want guys to go pro and play well- since that helps build up the program and helps with recruiting- but when recruiting players their NCAA potential is vastly more important than how they project for NFL
|3 years 40 weeks ago||So Alabama's ideal situation||
So Alabama's ideal situation was essentially our OL class that are already commits- gotta love it!
Also love seeing Alabama offers for our guys more than MSU ones- if we want to win NC's then we need to be a top recruiting team and that means going up against top recruiting powers and winning those recruits. Take care of business with the top MI recruits, and pluck top regional guys from OH etc., then go anywhere to get the top talent that fits your system- glad to see we can do that so effectively- especially it seems with OL recruits.
|3 years 40 weeks ago||Saban is probably the best||
Saban is probably the best recruiter in the country. And one of his biggest strengths is the OL- so I agree- seeing AL offers for the OL we recruit is great validation that they are legit players- maybe even moreso than the number of stars they have or their rankings.
Glad to see the focus on the men doing the dirty work with recruiting!
|3 years 40 weeks ago||I am a little too young to||
I am a little too young to have followed those Michigan teams so I have no strong feelings of connection to them but I obviously love our teams now. Michigan basketball was nothing for two decades because of Weber and everyone else in the scandal. We were the Mecca of colege ball with the fab-five, which was really the first modern team and then we were nothing. Yeah a great run but winning that way is not the same as winning like we are now.
