15 weeks 6 days ago I think middle-schoolers

I think middle-schoolers doing organized conditioning and the pressure coaches face may be a bit more uncommon outside of the South, but year-round conditioning certainly is not. I think in parts of the South, you do see smaller programs emulate larger-schools more often, but something like year-round conditioning, formal and informal, has been around for a while pretty much everywhere.

16 weeks 6 days ago Look at CRex's post below.

Look at CRex's post below. It's not so simple as looking at height and weight. Denard has strong legs, but he has relatively long legs and a high waist compared to a lot of RB's. That's part of the reason he runs high and it also makes you susceptible to lower body injuries as time goes on. It's not just height and weight, it's his build/proportions and his running style. He also doesn't have a particularly large neck or trap muscles like some of these other runningbacks, either. Denard is a little smaller than Michael Vick, and even though he plays QB, you can see that he's not a big guy and he's going up against linemen and LB'ers on a normal basis and it's taken its toll.

16 weeks 6 days ago I agree about his pad level

I agree about his pad level and upright running style. Even when he's between the tackles, he runs high, partly due to where his center of gravity being relatively high.

16 weeks 6 days ago I agree. You can point to

I agree. You can point to guys like Chris Johnson all you want, but the fact is that he's not the norm. If you run a 4.2 and has had sick numbers at RB through high school and college, than yes, his size is not as much of a factor. But, most RB's don't have Chris Johnson's build, who is pretty thickly built himself if you see him in person. I remember thinking Clinton Portis was on the small side, and while that may have been true, he had more of a RB build.

16 weeks 6 days ago The reason he's projected to

The reason he's projected to be a WR is partly due to what other QB's have done, Denard's build, injury history, and his upside. I understand Denard was successful running the ball between the tackles, but I don't know why people are so quick to judge Denard at WR when he hasn't been playing the position very long. Whether he goes to RB or WR, he will have to learn a lot of new skills. Let the guy continue to learn and develop. Teams will probably give him some handoffs, but if he wants to grow and "own" a position, it's probably going to be as a slot WR.

Kinda OT, but Denard is a guy who I could see blowing up in some capacity in the CFL, just sayin'.

17 weeks 8 hours ago I think DC would be a better

I think DC would be a better neutral site.

17 weeks 11 hours ago A lot of people acknowledge

A lot of people acknowledge that he can be a good runningback for all the reasons you mention, but a lot of people are thinking from a longevity perspective as well. I think a lot of people look at his build and at what other QB's have done and say that WR is the best spot, but we've seen that he has great running skills besides being fast that would make him a potential weapon in the running game.

But, there should be caution for him at RB as well, not just for durability issue, but because runningback is simply a different position, even from the running perspective. If we're going to be nit-picky, Denard does have a tendency to dance at times. His skills at RB were best observed, IMO, in the inside running game, but I do question whether he'd be an effective off-tackle runner. I think he could be effective as a zone runner, but who knows.Either way, I think he has runningback skills, but people are concerned about his longevity.

17 weeks 12 hours ago A lot of that can be

A lot of that can be alleviated with better route running skills. Part of it is muscle memory as well. He still looks to be relatively upright with his weight a bit far back away from his feet but I think as he learns how to run these routes, he will fix this. Maybe after the catch when he's reacting more, as he did as a QB, he regresses and stumbles, but I expect him to run much cleaner routes at least.

17 weeks 12 hours ago I don't think he gets to that

I don't think he gets to that level, either. Harvin was such a dynamic athlete in high school, especially at wide receiver, it wasn't surprising to see him pick up full-time WR so quickly. I was actually more impressed with the way he was used at Florida. But, I agree that there are certain things that Harvin has been used to at least practicing for going on 10 years now that Denard will have to pick up some of before he's anything like the natural WR that Harvin is.

17 weeks 22 hours ago I think Harvin is a best-case

I think Harvin is a best-case scenario. Denard is similar in that he will probably get some snaps in some sort of wild-cat/option scenario or in a jet sweep or just something out of the backfield. But, Harvin's been a receiver for a while and he just has those instincts that may be difficult for Denard to pick up. I just hope that he can get as healthy as he can as soon as possible. He's a guy who could be very effective in the right situation, but he could just as easily be wasted, IMO.

17 weeks 2 days ago I think it has peaked as

I think it has peaked as well. I think the novelty of the BCS has kind of worn off and although the playoff will breath new life into the sport, I think it'll be short-lived. I think a lot of the interest has also aligned with the increased interest in all levels of football, recruiting, and gambling. It seems like we may have peaked in a number of these areas, and if it hasn't peaked, than perhaps the rate of growth of interest has peaked and we may be plateauing soon.

I think a new technological/media product will have to emerge if things are to continue on the path we've seen in the past decade and a half or so.

18 weeks 11 hours ago I think Turgeon is a very

I think Turgeon is a very good coach and they're on a positive trajectory. As for why we can't pack a basketball stadium, you can ask Maryland about their abysmal football attendance. Basketball is just a bigger deal there and really the main major sport that they've had any consistent success at recently. If they recruit the area better, they will be a very dangerous team in the Big Ten and at minimum, they'll be in the top half of the Big Ten for a while.

18 weeks 13 hours ago I think Robinson needs to

I think Robinson needs to stay another year and be a centerpiece of the offense.

18 weeks 2 days ago This is a great fit for

This is a great fit for Loeffler and VT. I think this should breath new life into them offensively.

19 weeks 1 day ago Maryland is below the

Maryland is also below the Mason-Dixon line. And since we obsess about media markets when talking about conference expansion, Woodbridge, VA is in the DC market just like the homes of people like Countess, Furman, and countless others who've either been on the team or who've we've recruited.

The only reason why this nuance is brought up is because people see "VA" next to his name and all of a sudden he's a longshot Southern recruit when the reality is that he's a Mid-Atlantic recruit in the same market that we, OSU, PSU and others have had success recruiting.

21 weeks 3 days ago I'm doubtful about Denard's

I'm doubtful about Denard's prospects at the next level, but I actually think playing nickel or something might not be a bad idea. We don't know how well he can catch, although perhaps playing slot and catching some drags and outs would be feasible. But, Denard is strong and tough and doesn't shy away from contact. I think returning kicks will be his most likely landing spot, I could see the attraction to the idea of him playing corner, in addition to wide receiver. He could probably take snaps as a wild cat or at runningback, but he'd probably transition to WR over time for a number of reasons, health being an important one.

23 weeks 1 day ago I went to Michigan and UVA

I went to Michigan and UVA and I'm not saying that UVA would be a perfect fit, especially not culturally. I think a lot of flagship universities with high-level academics/research and good/decent sports in very nice college towns could fit in the Big Ten. And the fact that UVA has a lot of East Coasters, like a few Big Ten schools and is located in the Mid-Atlantic helps given the recent expansions. I do disagree with a number of the characterizations you made about UVA and its environs, but if you do make those characterizations about UVA, you could also make them about Penn St., Maryland, and Rutgers to a similar extent. The southern gentleman mentality you mention is probably the most significant differentiating quality between UVA and Big Ten schools.

I went to high school in Fairfax County, Virginia and it was funny how when I went to UM, I was seen as a southerner, in the pejorative sense, more than anything else and my buddy who's from Montgomery County, MD was seen as a cool East Coaster, so ignorance and geographical stereotypes are alive and well in Big Ten country as well.

23 weeks 1 day ago Stevie Brown looked like a

Stevie Brown looked like a beast when he first came to Michigan. He had a solid senior season, but he made a number of great plays on special teams early on during his Michigan career. He also seems like an overall good guy. I'm glad to see him putting together this kind of season.

23 weeks 1 day ago I agree with you, but the

I agree with you, but the year Stevie has had so far has been pretty good so far. It would have been nice to have had some Thorpe winners, though.

23 weeks 1 day ago What you say is true, but the

What you say is true, but the political boundary between the states actually is significant. Northern Virginia was basically a backwater while Suburban Maryland was the premier suburb of Washington DC decades ago. Now, Northern Virginia has come into its own and has become more significant than Suburban Maryland economically an and is just as livable for the most part, which pisses off longtime residents and economic development officials/politicians in Maryland. And even though Maryland had slaves, being a part of the Union and being less politically and culturally conservative has always been something that Maryland has boasted about. Even if NoVa is different, it's still tied to Richmond.

I agree about Charlottesville and UVA. I don't think it's more cosmopolitan than Ann Arbor, but I think it'd fit in to the Big Ten pretty easily.

23 weeks 2 days ago He may be underappreciated

He may be underappreciated from the standpoint that a lot of people made Burke seem worse than he was when he was debating going pro after last season. It was good that he came back, but he was great towards the stretch last season and he only helped himself in camps during the offseason, which is what I think he would have done had he declared after last season. His size isn't ideal, but people seemed to underrate how skilled he was. Even some analysts didn't see it.

So, I'm glad he came back but it was clear after last season that some people underappreciated him. Not now, though.

24 weeks 2 days ago I suspected something like

I suspected something like this. Either he was coasting somehow or he knew that Wiscy would have some difficulties ahead.

24 weeks 6 days ago Sounds like my experience in

Sounds like my experience in Morgantown. Morgantown is crazy, especially for rivalry games.

24 weeks 6 days ago Please stop repeating this

Please stop repeating this myth. UVA and VT have been together for less than ten years. As long has VT doesn't remain in a dumpster-fire of a conference, than the legislature is not going to obstruct things. There are certain circumstances present in the instance where the legislature got involved.

25 weeks 12 hours ago Is it common for the ACL to

Is it common for the ACL to be injured along with the patella? I ruptured my patella tendon and am rehabbing it, but there's an issue of buckling and lack of stability that I fear may be ACL-related. Along with the contact involved with the injury, chronic patellar tendonitis was a big contributing factor for me. I know it's different from a dislocation, but it's somewhat related still. Thanks for this post, though.

25 weeks 12 hours ago nm double post

nm double post

25 weeks 12 hours ago Utah is a flagship school,

Utah is a flagship school, not bad academically, has decent sports, is located in a fast growing and economically well-off state, and fits the geography. I don't think it's correct to say that no one say Utah going to the Pac-12.

25 weeks 1 day ago I dunno how it affects it,

I dunno how it affects it, but Michigan lacrosse is on the upward trajectory either way. Michigan is a well-known brand in lacrosse-rich areas and the sport has become more popular in the midwest. I think having matchups with Maryland and having games available on the BTN will definitely help.

25 weeks 1 day ago I agree. It is a smart choice

I agree. It is a smart choice from an athletics perspective. And, for the basketball-oriented programs in the conference, I'm sure they were less reluctant about this. When we talked Big Ten expansion, I'd always thought that while Louisville wouldn't be a target for us, it would be a good get for another BCS conference, whether it's the Big 12, SEC, or ACC, which I thought was the least likely, although that was before Pitt and 'Cuse joined.

25 weeks 1 day ago It wasn't even 10 years ago

It wasn't even 10 years ago that VT was in the Big East, separate from UVA. As long as VT is in a good situation, than it'll be fine. The state legislature was resistant to VT being on what was then thought of as being a sinking ship, the Big East. And, at that time, VT was still on a positive trajectory as far as name recognition goes with Vick having just been there and doing well in the NFL and good post-Vick Beamer years. The ACC will stick around in some form and be alright, and if it's not than VT could go to the SEC or Big 12. They have good enough athletics, academics, and media market importance to land in a good situation.

25 weeks 2 days ago They also had some decent

They also had some decent depth at DE with Tapp around as well. I don't know if they're still concerned with his run-stopping abilities.

25 weeks 2 days ago UNC has a more NC-centric

UNC has a more NC-centric population than UVA does with its VA population. UVA is probably less hostile to the influx of northerners than UNC, and I'm not sure how significant it is at either school. And I don't think UVA and VT being in separate conferences is a big deal nowadays, either.

25 weeks 2 days ago That and it's pretty easy to

That and it's pretty easy to get into ECU, so lots of people go mainly to party. Sorta like WVU.

26 weeks 1 day ago Maryland and Rutgers don't

Maryland and Rutgers don't have to compete with other powers in-state, either, unlike South Carolina/Clemson. So, in addition to what you say, the circumstances appear to be quite different in ways.

26 weeks 2 days ago UVA, Penn St., and WVU

UVA, Penn St., and WVU routinely steal a lot of good talent out of both states and recently, the SEC has poached some high quality talent like Joe Haden, Jelani Jenkins, Will Hill, etc. Ohio State has had a presence in these states as well.

The point is that Rutgers and Maryland have been mediocre programs and let a lot of talent get out of the state, both of which have sizable pools to select from. Ditto for basketball. Maryland has respectable high school football right now, but New Jersey has even more untapped potential, IMO.

I don't know if they're going to be the next South Carolina, but it may not be a bad comparison. I don't see these schools becoming powerhouses, but I think that if they can be seen more on television and can upgrade their facilities, they can be at least Iowa or Northwestern-like.

26 weeks 2 days ago I completely agree with

I completely agree with Chait. But, the only reason I support this expansion is because they're large flagship universities in densely populated and wealthy states with good academics and the potential for much better athletics as well. As crazy as these expansions are becoming, I'm almost of the mindset that we should go after the best schools no matter where they are, but I can understand the "upside" argument with this deal. Where I especially agree with Chait is with whether framing the issue in these terms as if it's a game of Risk is right. I don't think it's right at all. I think as far as the business model is concerned, I think we should be able to adjust. I don't see us going to a-la-carte cable or the content providers relinquishing their bargaining power anytime soon, but the cable business will be much different 10 years from now.

"Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey" is the official name of Rutgers University.

26 weeks 3 days ago It helps to bring some more

It helps to bring some more Big Ten presence to the East Coast, as much as I hate us deviating too far from what we've been about for so long. The ACC and Big East have traditionally had a very dominant footprint on the East Coast as far as athletics go. Maybe we can add another two schools to get to 16 someday with at least one of them being within a couple hours of I-95. That way we'll be a truly midwestern and northeast/mid-atlantic conference as opposed to being a midwestern one with some east coast sprinkled in.

26 weeks 3 days ago The Big Ten is not a mediocre

The Big Ten is not a mediocre academic conference. We're not far and away the best like some think, but when expanding, we are going after large flagship universities, and it helps if the schools don't have much competition within their own state. Nebraska is a great football program, but Maryland and Rutgers, as academic institutions, are large and have no peers within their state. There is upside with these schools if they do benefit financially from this deal and are able to grow academically and athletically.

27 weeks 1 day ago I think we are athletic,

I think we are athletic, generally speaking, but I want to see if we can take the next step and I think our lack of athleticism has been a bit of a weakness with Beilein's teams thus far. If we can match up in the athleticism department with MSU and OSU, let alone Kansas, Kentucky, etc., than along with our other strengths, than I think we'll be legit contenders.

27 weeks 1 day ago My main concern with the team

My main concern with the team is overall athleticism. McGary and Stauskas are pretty athletic, as is Biefeldt, along with most of the guys in our starting five. But, elite programs will have great athletes who play good defense, rebound well, and transition well so I'm curious to see how we match up there.

We've been able to give Burke some time on the bench, but another one of my concerns is our depth at the point guard position. Looks like Hardaway Jr. may be bringing the ball up a considerable amount, but I want to see how our backups dictate the pace of the game and set up the offense.

40 weeks 3 days ago And Bolt has a very good 60m

And Bolt has a very good 60m split at 6.29s. Not that Denard isn't fast, b/c of course he is, but in this whole discussion, there's little disagreement that after a certain distance, maybe after 20m or so because many are convinced that Denard would out-accelerate Bolt at the start, Bolt would be either catching up to or distancing himself from Denard. So, really the bottomline is that Bolt is faster than Denard if we're to look at their top speeds and people are just looking for ways to make Denard look good in this comparison. If Denard is faster than Bolt to 40 yds, that means dozens of people probably are, and that's just like trying to look for a moral victory considering what Bolt would do to them after that distance.

40 weeks 3 days ago "40 meters comes out to 36.58

40 weeks 3 days ago Here's a split of Usain's WR

Here's a split of Usain's WR run at Berlin. What's interesting here is that Bolt was ahead of everyone there by 40m and almost everyone at 20m. Dwain Chambers, who was also in the race, is an elite 60m guy as is Tyson Gay. If you take Bolt's 40m time and figure out what that equates to at 40yds, Bolt ran about what Brian wrote, depending on how many decimal points you use for the conversion to meters to ft/yds. And also like Brian mentioned, the sprints differ in that one starts on movement rather than a gun (and the reaction time may be quite a bit more than just a tenth depending on the runner) and the other lets you have blocks, so there's a bunch of assumptions here.

edit: it shows up squeezed on my screen and is kind of hard to read. Here's a link to the picture: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ua8ycqfc4ok/Sok0X9U62uI/AAAAAAAABq8/HJwymrWaDn4/s1600/Table.gif

I love Denard as we all do, but I've never been convinced that he's quite as fast as some would have you believe, sub 4.35 or so. Demps was an alternate on the 4x100m team in London. I think he ran a 10.02 in high school, so it's a bit surprising that he hasn't cracked 10s yet.

Bolt would crush him even at 40 yds. 4.05 sounds reasonable for him, but people have to understand that Bolt is already beating or close to beating sub-10s 100m guys by 40 yds. There are only a few people on the planet who can keep up with Bolt at that distance. Denard doesn't have that kind of speed, even though he does have great acceleration. And, if Bolt were to get a decent start like he did when he clocked a 9.58, than I think Bolt could showboat the last 5+ yds maybe. I expect people like Chris Johnson and Denard to be confident in themselves, so I'm not even surprised he said this.

1 year 12 weeks ago Maybe because it's how he

Maybe because it's how he tends to have his head on the swivel all the time. He's not lowering his head and sprinting on every snap. That tendency is better for running against zone defenses than in man coverages.

We also run a lot of drags. RR's passing offense catered more to the slots, and that's not what Junior is. He's not running a lot of drags, bubble screens, and slants. He's an outside guy, but he doesn't have a pro-style qb with a gun to get him the ball on the outside.

I just think people were tough on Junior. People seemed to love Darryl, but guys like Junior are underappreciated and in the NFL, he could very well be a productive player because of how skilled he is.

1 year 12 weeks ago How was it painful to watch?

How was it painful to watch? I just re-watched it and it didn't even look as if he was running 100%. I'm not saying he "plays like a 4.5 guy", but from what people say, it's like he's a 4.8 guy. People make it a foregone conclusion that he doesn't have the athleticism to be effective in the NFL. He's not a burner, but I don't think he's slow, either. And with respect to the 40 yard dash, some guys take time to accelerate, and some guys don't lose their top end speed at the same rate as others. There are other details involved, but I don't think Indy is a fast track or that Junior should be considered slow.

1 year 12 weeks ago   I disagree. I don't think

I disagree. I don't think this year is different than others. Everyone knew RGIII was fast. Running a 4.41 isn't unexpected considering his accolades pre-knee injury.

And I don't understand why people are surprised at the times of people like Floyd or Hemingway. Hemingway was a guy that people made out to be so slower than he actually was. 4.5 is a decent time and Hemingway has decent speed.

And Floyd is a big, physical guy, who people don't think of as being fast, again, w/ little reason. The TE's and DE's are freaks these days, so it's not surprising to see big guys with speed.

Technique definitely matters, and there is a difference between game and track speed, but a lot of people just have these inaccurate projections coming in.

Chris Rainey ran a 4.45, who may have looked faster than he is because he's a small guy.

I think the Detroit, Detroit, Detroit message has an important place, but doesn't need to be the main message in every one of their commercials. I think the "vaguely anywhere" and national perspective was precisely what the people writing it were going for. It was perhaps a bit too sentimental and dreary, but I think highlighting their entire line of products along with addressing the country as a whole is not a bad strategy.

1 year 15 weeks ago I personally like the new one

I personally like the new one because it was about the country as whole. Perhaps it was a bit schmaltzy but it was powerful, nonetheless. The one with Eminem was good as well, but I think its production, rather than its message, was what I appreciated more than anything.

I agree, and that's what some people are overlooking. Whether or not Miles is as bad as Saban, she felt disrespected w/ the approach that Saban took. The reality is that with a blue-chip recruit, at most of the big time programs, having them succeed on the field and eventually go to the NFL and become rich is what is one of the most desired outcomes. But, different coaches sell their school and their character in different ways and she was turned off by Saban. This isn't to say that she should have behaved the way she did at the announcement, however.

1 year 17 weeks ago Yea, he got beat, but he made

Yea, he got beat, but he made huge plays. So, I'm willing to overlook some of his weaknesses that we all know about. Adams was a solid player. Englemon was a very intelligent and solid player, but Shazor made more significant plays and was better at MIchigan.

1 year 17 weeks ago I hope Martin does well in

I hope Martin does well in the football drills and Senior Bowl. I don't know how long his arms are, but maybe it's just because of how buff he is, it looks like he doesn't have very long arms and combined with the fact that he's not particularly tall or heavy, that could be something that the scouts nitpick. I also don't know how fast he will run in the 40 to convince people that he has the speed to play a DE in a 3-4, although a 3 technique is where he's probably best suited.

1 year 17 weeks ago Jamar Adams wasn't even

Perry didn't jump out as you watched him and didn't have a legendary kind of career, but his last season was great. That 51 carry performance was legendary. I definitely wouldn't take Perry over Hart. Hart was the better runningback. I can honestly see Navarre over Henne before Perry over Hart.

I like Adams over Englemon and ditto Harris being in. But, I would give honorable mention to Lawrence Reid who was great before his neck injury, unlike Antonio Bass who was on the cusp of doing some special things. Molk gets the nod over Baas, but I think I'd put Baas at guard if I had to pick the best 5 OL. I also like Shazor in there, but also could see Crable fitting in somewhere, maybe as a reserve.

For special teams, put in Steve Breaston.

1 year 19 weeks ago I agree. As much as I liked

I agree. As much as I liked him as a player and obviously respect him, being a Michigan fan, I thought he was overrated by many. I was and still am a big Leon Hall fan and I remember where people would rate Warren in comparison to him and the all-time Michigan greats go and never understood it, besides him being a blue chipper coming out of high school and not having landed Ronald Johnson. I wish he had stayed one more year. I knew that he didn't have the pure athleticism that some guys had, but outside of a few plays, he also didn't have the ball-hawking skills that you associate with the elite at CB. Either way, I wish him luck and hope he ends up in the best situation to succeed.

1 year 19 weeks ago I don't see why he should be

I don't see why he should be banned just because he said something to offend you. To say that he used "this tragic incident as an excuse to cast fear and bigotry upon Muslims" is nothing but hyperbole and, along with your other choices in words,  an ad-hominem attack that makes you look like the "fucking idiot". And I say this as someone who has actually served in the US military. Learn to debate someone respectfully instead of being another internet tough guy who would never say that to someone in real life.

1 year 19 weeks ago If we decide to slap him with

If we decide to slap him with a 6 game suspension and he wants to leave, than so be it. But, I don't think it makes sense to kick off a 5th yr senior that we've invested a lot in for this probation violation. I understand that we need to punish him, and we should. Six games or so for a probation violation like this is understandably harsh. But, I also want the guy to succeed. If we feel that he's got a better shot at succeeding in life by keeping him in Ann Arbor rather than kicking him off the team, than I think we let the guy finish out his career. If this were another alcohol-related offense, than I would kick him off the team and see to it that he gets the help he needs.

1 year 19 weeks ago I think at this stage of his

I think at this stage of his career at Michigan, it would be wrong to let him go for this offense. But, I think a suspension would be fair. It's really frustrating that he's gotten himself into these situations. Whether he was being arrogant or careless, it just doesn't make any sense.

1 year 19 weeks ago Against VT, not having a

Against VT, not having a speed receiver hurt us because they could match up one on one and just load the box. Clemson just matches up better with VT than us. Clemson could have played better as well. This was an ugly game for Clemson, but it's repeated over and over that the transitive property doesn't apply all the time and it's still one of the first things whenever stuff like this happens.

1 year 20 weeks ago I agree that it's not as big

I agree that it's not as big a deal as some make it out to be, but once you show the bubble screen, there are other things you can do out of that look that will confuse a defense. Virginia Tech and other aggressive defenses may bite on the bubble screen pump fake and allow themselves to get beaten up top, where they don't have safety help sometimes.

With RR, we had a very effective play where we faked the zone read with Denard to find Roundtree or another slot open in the seam for a long gain. It's not a play that you try to run continuously, but over the course of a season, the half a dozen or so times it works may make a big difference.

I also like the play so that Denard has an easy throw to help his rhythm and at times, it may be more effective at getting us into 3rd and manageable situations.

1 year 20 weeks ago Do you honestly think people

Do you honestly think people would be clamoring for this play if they were playing bump and run. Whether they're crowding the line of scrimmage between the hashes makes no difference when running this play out of the gun.

1 year 20 weeks ago You're right, it doesn't

You're right, it doesn't matter since we don't run them, but, just because we haven't run it all season doesn't mean that it's not there for the taking against some teams. You're saying in addition to not having run it during the season, that it wasn't there. Last night, it was there for the inside receiver. The defender covering them was 10 yards off on plenty of plays which is enough room to run an effective bubble screen. The short stuff they were all over was with the outside receiver with the CB playing 7 or so yards off, not the inside receiver. And people saying you only run it a few times for a small gain, maybe we do run it a few times, but maybe we fake it and go deep or exploit another hole to capitalize on their aggressive defense.

1 year 20 weeks ago I'm not 100% about the rule,

I'm not 100% about the rule, but if the block is engaged and the hands move to the face from the pads, there is some leeway. It can't be egregious, but there is some leeway. Just like if you're a blocker and you've engaged in a block on a defender and the defender turns so their back is facing you, you can still block them.

1 year 20 weeks ago Look at his left elbow. It

Look at his left elbow. It clearly hits inbounds before the rest of his body. The question was whether he had possession.

1 year 20 weeks ago So, since we haven't run it

So, since we haven't run it all year, all the teams we faced "had some very good and active DBs that we all over the short passing game" in addition to Borges just not liking to run it? If we don't like to run it, than it is what it is, but it was there for the taking. Just because they were jumping slants and 5 yard curls on the outside receiver doesn't mean that the bubble screen or a similar play isn't there for the slot receiver.

1 year 20 weeks ago I think you have to "take

I think you have to "take what the defense gives you". That's the beauty of any good offense, whether pro-style or spread. You can make the defense pick their poison. If the bubble screen isn't there, something else may be and you end up dictating the defense as much as the defense dictates what you're doing.

1 year 20 weeks ago Our line isn't/wasn't

Our line isn't/wasn't athletic enough. Their D-line held their own, but a lot of the time, it was secondary players, who were in the box all night, making plays, which only helped their D line as the game went on. The confusion VT created upfront seemed to get to us. We started to roll out to buy time in passing plays, but their secondary was athletic enough to keep us largely in check. We really need a receiver with great speed to help us open some things up. We also probably could have used the TE more in the receiving game.

1 year 20 weeks ago I have played some snaps of

I have played some snaps of football, which may or may not be good enough for you, and incorporating a single play into formations that we already run routinely is not a difficult task. I don't think this topic deserves the kind of controversy it gets one way or the other, but it is a bit of a head-scratcher.

1 year 20 weeks ago And I don't think it is an

And I don't think it is an ideological thing w/ Borges. We have run WR screens this year. It's just a certain variety of the screen pass in certain circumstances that it seems we just don't put much faith in.

1 year 20 weeks ago I sincerely hope that's not

I sincerely hope that's not the case, that Borges has an ideological contempt for the bubble screen. Those are the types of easy passes that we ran last year to get Denard into a rhythm and they are effective when executed properly with downfield blocking and if there's a cushion. On top of that, if they're run on early downs, we are less likely to be in a 3rd and long situation. I really hope our coaches are practical enough to take what the defense gives us, depite it being "lazy" or "gimme yardage". If he were so against the bubble screen, we may as well say screw the slot receiver and run with a TE and fullback.

1 year 20 weeks ago VT doesn't have a

That's unfortunate b/c we shouldn't hesitate to take what the defense gives us. VT doesn't have a "slot-ninja" system, either. They happen to have certain personnel w/ various strengths and while they certainly like to incorporate the bubble screen into their everyday offense, they're even more eager to use it if the defense is giving it to you. VT has Coale line up outside sometimes and sometimes have 6'-4" Marcus Davis playing the slot. Not to mention, you can run a screen with the outside receiver. We wanted Diggs so bad; you don't think it would be great to maximize the potential of guys who can make plays in space? With Denard, that may be an easy throw to help get him into a bit of a rhythm. And Gallon is already effective a lot of the time when he gets screens as it is.

1 year 20 weeks ago If you say it as a joke, it

If you say it as a joke, it could get obnoxious. Most people who say VPI aren't doing it in a disrespectful way and nobody says "VPI&SU", so if it's said by a UVA or WVU or some opponent, it's probably meant as a playful joke.

1 year 20 weeks ago I don't think VPI pisses

I don't think VPI pisses people off as much as it is a little old-fashioned, but VPI&SU would be pretty obnoxious. But, there's no rivalry with them, so I don't think many people will care enough to call them that. People unfamilar with VT don't call them Vah-Tech to piss them off.

1 year 20 weeks ago I think it's a reasonable

I think it's a reasonable article. I don't think 21 points is all that much. Logan Thomas may not be as good a runner as Braxton Miller, but he can still get 10-15 yards if there is a gap in coverage. And they will try a trick play or two. Perhaps they bust a couple long plays in the running and passing game.

Aside from that, they will try to methodically move the ball downfield. I do agree that we will be able to control them with our strong D line and their relatively weak O line.

Offensively, if we have balance and limit mistakes, they will have no answer for us.

1 year 21 weeks ago If you're talking about

If you're talking about scoring, I don't think it is meaningless. I like the efficiency rankings, but according to the defensive FEI's, Rutgers and Illinois have top 5 defenses. Maybe they're good, but I don't know about that good. I don't think you can get the full picture w/ any one particular stat, so I agree with you that much.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feidef2011

There are some other stats, and maybe I'm not interpreting the chart correctly, but although OSU has a good DFEI, it doesn't rate so high in some of the other categories. Having such an explosive offense puts pressure on opposing offenses to move the ball.

They've had a lot of injuries on offense, a mediocre O-line, and a pretty bad running game. He's had to put the offense on his back this year. I think Stafford definitely has a legitimate claim, but I don't think numbers capture what Manning has done this year. It's not that Henne can't throw the long ball. I'm not saying you said this, but it's an important distinction. He has a good long ball, but due to nerves or lack of confidence or something he'd rather take the check down than make a another careless mistake.

1 year 21 weeks ago   Cruz is more of a deep

Cruz is more of a deep threat and YAC guy than Smith. Smith was a consistently good underneath and across the middle threat that Eli had great chemistry with. The NYG doesn't lack game breakers. It's stagnant drives and a sporadic running game that dooms them on offense. I agree that they don't need Braylon. It would be nice to have a Plax type guy, it's not the biggest need right now. If you look at Braylon's inconsistency, it's probably the last thing the Giants need right now.

1 year 21 weeks ago I'm also a Giants fan, and I

I'm also a Giants fan, and I think they need a Steve Smith kind of guy, who's like a Jason Avant coicidentally and plays w/ him now, more than a Braylon. I do like the Plaxico comparison, though. Nicks has great physical presence and concentration, but Braylon uses his height better. I just think he would put up better numbers with some other teams where he better fills a need.

1 year 21 weeks ago I'd like to see him on the

I'd like to see him on the Patriots, even though I'm not a Pats fan. He needs to go somewhere with a good QB and passing system along with veteran leadership and no-nonsense coaches. The Pats are also a team that doesn't have someone like Braylon. The Saints have a number of guys like him. And the Steelers have enough drama, as do the Eagles. The Giants don't have a consistent and prolific passing attack, but they tend to stagnate and have a guy injured. They seem to have a decent stable of WR's hitting their stride right now, though. That's just off the top of my head, but maybe there is some place where he could be difference maker.

Maybe expecting to go to a contender is too much to ask, though. Either way, I hope he gets back on his feet.

1 year 22 weeks ago David Wilson is a very good

David Wilson is a very good back, but loves to bounce it outside. If we can take care of cut back lanes, keep him from bouncing outside and/or get to the edge, they will have a hard time running the ball against us.

In addition to Boykin and Coale, they have another receiver, Marcus Davis. He's an ex-QB and a large target and has been a decent weapon for them. They haven't had the very good TE play that they have had in the recent past with Jeff King and Greg Boone, but they use a number of guys to try and create matchup problems.

I also see them trying a number of trick plays, maybe with Coale throwing it deep to Thomas. I think we'll be fine. We should stuff their running game and be able to run on them. If we get ahead by two scores, than I will feel very comfortable.

Students will be home for break. Most of them are from the Washington D.C., Richmond, and Hampton Roads areas where there are airports. I think the combination of getting blown out by Clemson, having been to the ACC championship game and BCS bowls in the recent past and costs associated with tickets through the VT website and travel have deterred people.

I agree. Living in the DC area with a lot of Penn State alums as well, I think PSU and VT fans are very similar for some reason. I wouldn't lump in VT fans with MSU fans. VT and Michigan are similar, but sports means so much more to Michigan fans, it is hard to compare the two w/ respect to athletic engagement which is a big part of the student/alum experience.

It's bizarre to refer to any school as Tech or State outside of their region b/c it's confusing. It depends on geography. In the DC area, if you tell someone you went to Tech, they're gonna assume it's Virginia Tech. Similar to "State" in Michigan. And nobody calls Virginia Tech VT or VaTech, and the abbreviation, VPI, hardly anyone uses, either.

1 year 25 weeks ago I think we should have as

I think we should have as much of a chance as anyone. We need this guy or someone like him who can play outside receiver and slot and make big plays in the short/intermediate passing game.

I don't see him going to Maryland. UVA has had bad luck at QB lately, it seems. USC and OU worry me as much as anyone with the talent that they've had at QB and WR lately. It's going to be a good fight, but if we can snag this guy from those other schools, that says a lot about us and where we're heading, I hope.

The Bills' Stevie Johnson did it, one of the Packers LBer's did it and I'm pretty sure other NFL players have done it as well. Lil' B sucks, though. I wonder what the kids (I'm 25) will come up with next.

1 year 25 weeks ago I think there may be truth to

I think there may be truth to the OP. If we were to believe the health concerns, than he had a serious issue and coming back so soon raises some questions about whether he can avoid them if he's coaching again so soon. And I do think Florida is a "dying star". It's going to be a bright star, but the circumstances while he was at Florida were great. Miami and FSU weren't great and LSU was the only perennial powerhouse in the SEC during that 5 or so years. I think the SEC is a lot more competitive and it's going to be even tougher for a team like Florida. I don't know about all the other rumors about his fidelity, but I don't think health was the *only* reason why he left and why he's back so soon.

Sure, I have made mistakes, but I don't ask "Why?" if there are consequences associated with those mistakes. JoePa has done a lot of great things and has had a great run, but made a mistake, and he has to pay the consequences as did the other high-level people who knew and didn't do much. I don't understand the controversy.

1 year 30 weeks ago Baltimore, Philly, NYC, and

Baltimore, Philly, NYC, and Boston aren't big college football towns, either. But, they are so populated, they will still get a decent number of viewers and if you happen to have a big year, who knows. Interestingly enough, from the college standpoint, DC is may be a bigger sports town than the other four due to having crappy pro teams and demographics. It is a pretty fickle pro-sports town depending on success, outside of the Redskins.

I agree. I would have preferred the head coach express his sentiments in a different way, but I don't think what he said is over the top, given their circumstances. Their talent level isn't good and he's right about recruiting toughness. Some guys can get by at the college level with subpar fundamentals but have the right mentality.  And the team as a whole isn't athletically gifted to the level that you need them to be in order to be competitive. I know it's a slam on the players, but it's directed more towards Brewster and his recruiting performance. It sucks for the players to hear this, but I can't pretend to know how his players feel about him and how he feels about the players, on an emotional level, from a short quote.

1 year 33 weeks ago And if you get Notre Dame

And if you get Notre Dame alone, along with OSU, PSU, and Michigan, you'll have enough to get into the NYC market and plenty to get into other markets of the country as well. Rutgers isn't even that big of a team in New Jersey. New Jersey is blanketed by the NYC and Philly markets and neither of them care all that much about Rutgers.

1 year 35 weeks ago It's not that big of a deal.

It's not that big of a deal. Plenty of players from the Northeast go to the ACC and play basketball down there, and for good reason. Duke and UNC are among the most beloved teams in basketball around the country, but especially in the Northeast. If UConn somehow goes to the ACC, it'll be even less of a talking point.

Not to mention that NYC has more than 20 million people in its metro and DC has 6 million and 8+ if you include nearby Baltimore where there is a bit of media/cultural synergy. Plenty of people are going to watch. And yes, to reiterate, there are plenty of alumni in these areas.

1 year 39 weeks ago Parking structures are expensive...

They are better overall, but I can certainly understand why the value isn't there. Parking structures are more expensive than a lot of people think, and they get prohibitively expensive the larger they are, whether below or aboveground. How much parking would you want a structure or multiple structures near the stadium to have? Parking is a huge hassle, but I think the better value is to lock down certain rights of way for shuttles and mass transit on game day to and from the stadium and various parking lots.

Ann Arbor happens to be one of the most vibrant and walkable cities in the state, and making it easy to park, and drive, would diminish those qualities. I think we can build some structures, but Ann Arbor is a very liberal and progressive city, planning-wise and they don't look kindly to making it more auto-friendly.

1 year 40 weeks ago   I agree. I think nerves

I agree. I think nerves affect him to the point where it's had a tangible negative impact on his play. Whether it was in Ann Arbor or down in Miami, aside from checking down a lot, he makes throws that make you scratch your head, and in most of those cases, straight into coverage.  Everyone does at times, but it was a problem at Michigan and it's magnified in the pro's and when you're not all that great a team. It's one of those things that could be tough to fix, even if you're completely aware of it, b/c then there's the danger of having that anxiety impact your play, leading to a kind of cycle. Call it an intangible, I guess, b/c I can figure out the best word (moxie?), but it's a nerves/focus problem.

1 year 40 weeks ago You want to have it both ways

You want to have it both ways and talk about geographic continuity while at the same time saying we don't need a cultural fit b/c we want TV revenue. I could honestly care less if continuity is broken if the Big Ten were to take a southern school like UVA (and south=bad to a lot of people), that otherwise offers a lot. I wouldn't take Maryland over UVA just b/c it looks better on a map, it would have to be more than that.

If you want the NYC market so bad, add Notre Dame and then Pitt. With Notre Dame, Penn St, Michigan, and Ohio St, the Big Ten Network would have all the schools that it needs to make it worthwhile in the NYC area. Syracuse doesn't add as much as you think, which has been alluded to a number of times. And I'm not just speaking out of my ass, I'm one of the NYC natives who went to Michigan. Basketball is the only benefit of having 'Cuse and it's not as profitable and Boeheim would vehemently oppose going to the Big Ten.

Hardly anyone cares about Texas Tech football. It's good enough to add A&M and maybe try to have Dallas Stadium host the SEC championship game or SEC teams on a fairly routine basis. College Station is almost equidistant between Dallas and Houston, you're not just going after Houston w/ Texas A&M. Adding TT will be a marginal TV improvement while at the same time adding a non-player in athletics and academics.

1 year 40 weeks ago It's great to hear that Mike

It's great to hear that Mike is "all in" for Coach English and EMU and happy with his decision to move on from pro football. I would have loved for him to find a gig on a new team, but I want him to be productive and not just bust his ass to sit on the bench or get injured. I wish him the best and very much hope he is a coach at Michigan someday. He's the consummate Wolverine

1 year 40 weeks ago   That may be the case,

That may be the case, but it is a factor nonetheless. If more people apply, and you need to be more qualified to get in, it should reflect positively on the academic standing and reputation of the school. With prolonged success and notoriety in sports, it can have a substantial impact.  I hope we can capitalize on this effect when/if Brady Hoke is successful.

1 year 40 weeks ago My causation isn't wrong.

My causation isn't wrong. Michael Vick taking VT to the NC game and their continued success afterwards raised the visibility of the school and they saw more people apply and admissions standards increase. VT is not the only case like this. Florida and USC had the same thing happen with their success despite not having changed conferences, and I'm not sure about OSU and Texas, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were the case for them as well. George Mason had a spike in applicants after they went to the Final Four. I'm not saying that being in the ACC doesn't help, but with VT, it was Michael Vick, and then them going to the ACC.

1 year 40 weeks ago But I think part of the

But I think part of the reason the opportunity was knocking was because the ACC was expanding at the Big East's expense. I think if the deal were lucrative enough, VT would leave. It already has a better academic reputation b/c of the higher profile of its football team. I agree that academically, it is better off in the ACC.

1 year 40 weeks ago I live in the DC area and

I live in the DC area and Maryland has a sizable, but somewhat apathetic fanbase. Maryland has a sizable out of state contingent, but they don't go there for the football. It also has a lot of commuters who generally spend less time on campus and have less pride. Basketball is a well-known product, so that's where most of the attention goes. I think Edsall will do a good job there, though.

1 year 40 weeks ago I agree. I can't see Maryland

I agree. I can't see Maryland going to the SEC. Maryland being north of the Potomac is a big deal for them, even though they're below the Mason-Dixon. "South" is sort of like a pejorative term. Not to mention, the ACC is en elite academic and basketball conference. Maryland is trying hard to boost football, though.

I can definitely see VT, though. I don't think the legislature would be a big hurdle. As mentioned earlier, since BC and Miami were already leaving the Big East, VT would be left to flounder with WVU and Pitt being the only other notable football programs. If VT were to go to the SEC, they'd be in good hands and the ACC would be able to survive as well, so UVA wouldn't be screwed. And if UVA somehow landed in the Big Ten, they'd be in good hands as well.

1 year 40 weeks ago You don't just look at a map

You don't just look at a map and assume you know everything. UVA is similar to Michigan in that they get a lot of north easterners/out-of-staters and the most populated region of Virginia is Northern Virginia, the suburbs of Washington, DC, where a lot of their in-state population are from and live after they graduate. UVA has a great foundation from which to build a quality football program, more than 'Cuse and Rutgers. They've sent a lot of guys to the pros and already recruit the northeast well. They have a fairly new football and basketball stadium. They have good lacrosse, soccer and baseball teams, great academics and a college town that fits in with the conference. I don't think they'd join the conference, btw.

But, you're so infatuated with NYC, you need to hear some facts. New York is not the Big Ten equivalent to Texas, I don't even know what that means. Chicago is the capital of the Big Ten, NYC is a market that a lot of Big Ten grads are from and work after they graduate. Penn St and Michigan are among the biggest alumni groups in the NYC area. Syracuse and Rutgers are not the draws that you think they are in the area. Rutgers being a flagship is about all it offers. Texas A&M's football significance and relationship with Texas are not like Syracuse or Rutgers. The SEC isn't going after the University of Houston, they're going after a legendary football program with a huge regional following in a populated area.

I don't care if the SEC goes after Texas Tech or Clemson, I'm just saying that Texas Tech offers nothing to the conference. Texas A&M makes a lot of sense, Texas Tech and Lubbock, TX don't.

1 year 40 weeks ago I'd love Pitt to join. I

I'd love Pitt to join. I agree that them and ND are the most obvious choices. My concern with Pitt is their football stadium being Heinz Field. People take shuttles from campus to get to the stadium, it's very different from what we're used to seeing in the Big Ten. I don't know if a football stadium for their team makes sense, but that would make it a slam dunk, IMO. A lot of Pitt fans don't want to leave the Big East for basketball reasons primarily, but I think financially, it would make sense. They have a lot of bball rivalries that hopefully could be preserved, but WVU is their only football one in-conference right now worth keeping.

1 year 40 weeks ago Yea, let's counter the Pac-12

Yea, let's counter the Pac-12 taking OU and the SEC grabbing A&M by getting Rutgers and 'Cuse. That'll show 'em. And OU going to the Pac-12 would sort of mess up your "region" argument. And the SEC doesn't give a crap about Texas Tech, where are you getting this nonsense from? If it were as easy as going to the ACC to get schools, they'd poach programs like Clemson before bothering with Texas Tech.

If you want midwestern/Big Ten transplants so bad, there are a bunch of them all over the East Coast, Penn St. is a big draw throughout the Bos-Wash corridor, unlike Rutgers and Syracuse, so you'd probably be better off going after some going after the schools that matter in that corridor like Pitt, VT, UVA, U-MD and even UNC. And I'd take 'Cuse, but I think if geography isn't the biggest constraint in the world, there are better choices.

1 year 40 weeks ago So, Massachusetts and Georgia

So, Massachusetts and Georgia border the Atlantic Ocean...who cares? What the heck kind of region is that? Bordering a large body of water is an arbitrary distinction that has no cultural bearing on things. And it's not "a great fit on the map." If you can get a high quality research institution with a great football program that can open up a new market for you, you take it.

And no thanks to Syracuse to the Big Ten. They weren't even a big football draw in NYC when they were good. Penn St., Michigan and Ohio State do about a good a job as I think we can expect.

1 year 40 weeks ago Current region?

Current region is a mostly nonsense, IMO. If we're going by regions, than BC makes little sense being in the mostly southern ACC and TCU doesn't make sense in the Big East. Most will agree on that, but South Carolina and Texas have very little in common with eachother, too. Arizona and Oregon don't have much in common. I'd rather have good football programs and academic institutions rather than put such a large emphasis on some tenuous concept of "regions". Pitt makes sense b/c it's a good football, basketball and academic school in a weak conference and it being close by with a rivalry with PSU is icing on the cake. I'd rather have an out-of-region school like VT than Syracuse. I think if we're going to get Missouri, we should try to get Kansas as well and have the Illinois-Kansas-Missouri rivalries preserved, not to mention they're flagship universities.

1 year 40 weeks ago VT is a respectable academic school...

It's not Duke, UVA or UNC, but it's comparable to most Big Ten schools and as good, if not better than some other schools most often mentioned. It has strengths and weaknesses, but it has a top 20 engineering school.

1 year 47 weeks ago   Virginia is similar.

Virginia is similar. Most of the state's lacrosse talent comes from the DC suburbs, which are tied to the Mid-Atlantic more than the South.
