Soil is the stuff in the ground from which turf, flowers, etc., grow.
Dirt is the stuff in your vacuum bag.
Also, "turf" is the green stuff in your yard and on a golf course. "Grass" is rolled and smoked (or baked into brownies, I guess).
Hope that helps...

Warm in the Palace, cold outside. Do the math. Not excusing them, because it is (possbily) a once-in-a-lifetime event, but the mojo is more with hoops than hockey for them.

In my five years in the MMB, I got to lead a line out of the tunnel one time -- the 1986 loss to Minnesota on Chip Lohmiller's last-second FG. I went 2-3 in bowl games (wins @ Fiesta vs. NEB and @ Hall of Fame vs. ALA). Did get to run out of Ohio Stadium the following week knowing we were going to the Rose Bowl (thanks to Harbaugh's guarantee).
Four NCAA hoop tournaments, never made it past the Sweet 16.

The members of the MMB are PAYING students, not scholarship athletes. (I believe it's still a class through the School of Music, so those kids have to PAY to be out there). I would guess that the vast majority of them came to U-M to be in the Michigan Band and perpetuate its great tradition, just like the athletes.
And if the athletes enjoy great careers at U-M, some of them can look forward to highly lucrative careers playing their sport. Even the greatest marching band member in the world will ever receive a cent for his/her efforts out there. This is it for them. I know I rarely touched my trumpet after graduating. What could top playing in 5 bowl games, marching in the Tournament of Roses, and travelling to 4 NCAA basketball tournaments.
When coaches fail to put the players in a position to be successful, they are criticized along with the players. BUT, how much more influence does a U-M football player have over his individual success on the field than a marching band member? A helluva lot.
Long way around, the kids in the MMB work hard. They sweat, they hurt, they run and they PAY for the chance to perform in Michigan Stadium. And for what? For Michigan. For the love of it. Certainly not for an ungrateful public that knows little (or nothing) about what goes in to what they do.
I think criticism of the MMB needs to be directed at its leadership, the director, the School of Music and, to an extend the Athletic Department. Those are the people that need to put these kids in a position to succeed.
If you've got issues with the Band, direct them where they will do some good. To say "the Band fucking sucks" just shows your own ignorance. Save it.
|7 years 12 weeks ago||Definitely not Illinois||
The Dept. of Music's Bandorama concert is Saturday night, and the MMB is the featured attraction.
Also, the Band has not traveled to Wisconsin in about 30 years, due to some terrible treatment of visiting bands by the UW partisans. Don't know that the MMB will ever return to Madison.

I really think so. It's $6.99/6-pack @ Busch's, IIRC. Not very heavy, a subtle citrus tone, quite drinkable. It's local -- brewed and bottled in Webberville. And, well, ya gotta love the name.

Carl (the P.A. voice of Michigan Stadium and the Band) tells me this was a call made by the athletic department folks to make room for the "pre-game video components." Coach Rod's name was brought up in the discussion, as was "team unity." He also said he misses doing the lineups since it would really get the crowd going for big games.
On the "team unity" point, Coach Rod said today he isn't going to announce which walk-ons get scholarships so the other walk-ons don't get bummed.
|7 years 17 weeks ago||Who?||
I only discuss players that play for Michigan.
|7 years 17 weeks ago||Origins of IGTBAMW||
At the 1984 Sugar Bowl game, the MMB and Michigan cheerleaders were on a New Orleans riverboat cruise with the Auburn band and cheerleaders. One of the more incessant Auburn cheers was "It's Great. To Be. An Awwwe-burn Tiger."
The MMB adopted it and adapted it for Michigan, occasionally chanting it during marches to and from the stadium.
As a band alum, it's cool to see something that started with the band move organically into the Michigan cheering lexicon.

Of course, since the introduction of a more "corps" style, the median BMI of the MMBers has been on the chair lift. So, no great loss, I guess...
Now ... when I was in the Band, well, the women weren't incredibly hot either, but at least they were fit.

I read the Freep stuff when a Sparty friend posted it on Facebook, no doubt giddy of impending probation, sanctions, lost scholarships, etc. And I had some bad thoughts about the program after reading it.
HOWEVA, a little time on this site showed the light on the whole situation. As someone else somewhere here said, this will likely have about as much effect as Carty's hack job last summer at the (now curiously defunct) Ann Arbor News.
Thanks, Brian. Big ups to you.
|7 years 20 weeks ago||RE: Sausage||
With apologies to the OP's vegetarian bent, I've got the hook-up for great sausage.
In Dearborn, on Schafer just south of Michigan Ave., is Alcamo's Italian Market. Handmade sausage (garlic, hot, fennel, plain and breakfast varities) all for $2.99/pound. (About a year and a half ago they raised their price from $2.49/pound, where it had been since I started going there in 2000).
I am partial to the fennel sausage, which I grill up and serve at all tailgates. It goes very fast when you cut it into bite-size chucks and stick toothpicks in said chunks. Our group will eat as much as I cook.
For veggies, I like a variety of carrots (baby -- no cutting necessary), celery, cauliflower, brocolli and grape tomatoes. Also, spinach dip with rye bread in a bowl made of bread. Everyone's a winner!

Can't register a vote because the poll site is blocked by my company's firewall (friggin' Nazis).
I would wear the mascots shirt and be the hero of my tailgate.
Outstanding effort all around, Six.
|7 years 20 weeks ago||Pulling for friends||
Many of my non-Michigan allegiances are with friends and former U-M people that I like. To wit:
Big East: Pitt. Former U-M director of football ops Jeff Long is A.D. And the 'stache is OK.
ACC: Clemson. Close friend from U-M is an ortho doc for their teams.
Big 12: Texas. Like their tradition and that they beat USC. Have close friends with ties down there.
SEC: Got to know Les Miles and his wife when they were in A2, so it's LSU. Have a good friend from 'Bama, and always liked their tradition, so Roll Tide.
PAC-10: Former U-M associate AD Bob deCarolis is AD at Oregon State (I used to work with his wife). Hate USC, 'natch.
Big Ten: This is a tough one. PSU is OK, as I used to live in Philly and have some friends who are alums. I tolerate the Spartys, but for some reason can never, ever root for them. I even find myself rooting for OSU when they play. Is that wrong?

I may have exaggerated.
|7 years 21 weeks ago||Great. Solo HRs.||
Wouldn't want to hit any of those with, say, runners on base, would we?
No, I suppose we wouldn't.
|7 years 21 weeks ago||Granderson out 2 games||
Leyland is sitting Curtis today and tomorrow. Grandy is something like 0-for-15 with 23 strikeouts in the last 3 games.
Or something like that...
|7 years 21 weeks ago||Don't look now...||
But the Tiges already trail, 3-0.
|7 years 21 weeks ago||Totally sweet...||
Outstanding, Yostal. Now rocking it on my Twitter avatar.
What will those crazy kids come up with next?
|7 years 22 weeks ago||au contraire, there's Mark's||
Mark's Midtown Coney Island on State (just south of 94) has some very acceptable coney dogs. I believe there is also one on Plymouth Road near US 23.
Of course, you really want the best coneys, you've got to truck in to The D and go to Lafayette. But you already knew that...
|7 years 22 weeks ago||It'll be a great move...||
...if Huff proves capable of driving in the runners in scoring position, esp. guys on 3rd with less than 2 outs.
This year's team has been pretty decent, but their lack of timely hitting has been frustrating, to say the least.
They've got the starters, the 'pen is coming around, and they can play defense. Now someone has to drive in some freakin' runs.
|7 years 22 weeks ago||Word to Red Hawk||
It's Casey's with better atmosphere, better location, better beer, better food, better help, etc.
|7 years 22 weeks ago||Zingerman's Roadhouse||
It's off-campus and overpriced (some would argue. Not I.) but the food is fantastic.
And it is very literally all American food, so there ya go...
|7 years 22 weeks ago||Not to be a d-bag, but...||
The motto is actually "cheaper than food."
At least it was when I was in school about 100 years ago...
|7 years 22 weeks ago||What did you expect?||
Don't mean to hate, but did you expect to see the first 15 scripted plays for the first game, complete with The Force rolling out and hitting open receivers, or MINOR RAGE?
It was Michigan football players on (plausibly) live TV. Haven't seen that since last Nov. For Aug. 14, it wasn't so bad.
All that matters is what happens after toe meets leather on Sept. 5.
|7 years 22 weeks ago||Clearing out||
...some almost-flat tonic water.
Thank God there is some gin to wash it down. Too damn hot for beer.
|7 years 24 weeks ago||Pittsburgh||
FWIW, Pittsburgh A.D. Jeff Long was director of football operations here in the Mo-Carr era and also worked on Bo's staff.
Plus, the RR-rivalry-with-Pitt storyline would have some legs.
|7 years 27 weeks ago||Amen on Grandy||
Just got my autographed photo of him in the mail yesterday for pledging to his Grand Kids Foundation. My boys (6 and 8) are well-aware that Curtis is my fave. My oldest son likes Cabrera (digs the long ball, I guess) and my youngest roots for Maggs.
As they get older, I will often remind them that the reason I like Curtis so much is not just because he is a good player, but because he is an even better person. I'm glad the Tigers have a CF that my children will be able to look up to for many years to come.
|7 years 36 weeks ago||AYE!||
|7 years 36 weeks ago||Julian Peterson||
The Lions sent Cory Redding (who that had franchised) to Seattle to get the former Sparty, a very good pass-rushing LB.
|7 years 37 weeks ago||But he did produce..||
I recall he had critical fumbles in losses to Illinois and Wisconsin. That's his legacy in my book. He was a major recruit when he signed.
|7 years 37 weeks ago||Thanks, Brian!||
Been lurking here for about 18 months. Really enjoy the content. Now I may have to share my ignorance with the MGoReaders...
