I think Mgoblog's readership numbers lagged this summer because the content was just not good, which I actually complained about to my girlfriend.  There was basically nothing to read until about 1.5 weeks before the season, when tons and tons of previews went up.  I mean, Brian could have UFR'ed the Sugar Bowl, put up season previews a little earlier, or invested in making the website better (commenting system, mgoboard, non-ugly redesign), but we got pretty much nothing over the summer.

So it's occurred to me watching UEFA that the British announcer keeps saying "Spain have ..." instead of "Spain has ...", and now the fat US commentator is emulating that.  Is this a British thing?  It's grammatically jarring to my ears.

With so many successful teams, I don't get why Michigan is unable to win more NCAA National Championships. I guess the BigTen being the goal mentality goes back to Bo, but it's surprising that we don't have a sport that we simply dominate year to year, like NW with w lax, or PSU with Volleyball. Lord knows we've got the resources.

Having gone to UM and then lived in Chapel Hill, there is really something special about the Duke-UNC rivalry that in some senses makes it better than the OSU-Michigan rivalry.  

The biggest being that they've arguably been the #1 and #2 programs in the nation for 30 some years now, and have the NCAA championships to show it, and are in the yearly discussion for best team in the country.  OSU and Michigan have won only 2 NC's in the past 30 years, and the Big Ten lore has depreciated in recent years.

And the campuses are separated by 8 miles!  Could you imagine if driving down the road to Ypsi meant being at Ohio State instead of being at Eastern, and how much more intense that would make the rivalry?

Brandon Minor was one of the great casualties of RR's questionable personnel decisions.  And of a Lloyd Carr memorial burned redshirt.  He probably could have had one of the best years by a running back if he had a 5th year in 2010 and ran beside Denard.

I think he's gone.  Can't blame him if wants to enter the NBA with his best friend / rival Jared Sullinger.

HS kids do go through very different growth sperts, so a valid point.  The ideal preference is for coaches to have the full gamut of information on recruits (Junior summer camp, Senior year film) before accepting committments, then cherry picking the best.  Some schools are actually able to do this, but I imagine it's more difficult with less in-state talent.

Great advice, and also know that going from Business to Engineering can be done.  While working full-time I've also been satisfying CS pre-reqs in preparation for going to a Masters program in Computer Science.  I also landed a job building tech products despite my BBA, though it does take a LOT of work to get yourself in.

Very happy Northwestern lost and won't be playing in the NCAA tournament.  1-10 vs. the top 50. Shouldn't get credit for being in a tough conference if you can't actually win any tough games.

NCAA could simply mandate a winning record against FBS teams to become bowl eligible.  5-6 vs FBS and 1 win over an FCS school wouldn't cut it anymore, and schools will think twice about scheduling FCS teams.

I had to drop a class this semester because it was so depressing to go to North Campus.  Nothing good architecturally came of the post-WWII years.

Michigan has been struggling to integrete N Campus since the day it was acquired, and has continually failed.  I wish the trustees had the foresight in 1952 to buy up land east of Geddes instead.

I know a couple people who chose other art schools because they didn't want to be isolated on North Campus.  Atmosphere makes such a difference in your college experience, and North Campus has all the college charm of a commuter school.

I'm embarrassed, dismayed and angered by those comments suggesting that he may have done something to warrant his dismissal. Just flabbergasted by the implication, to be honest. Coach Tressel has provided ample evidence that his judgment is usually absolutely on target. Even if this is a case when his decision-making was not ideal, he's got enough "in the bank" so that Buckeye fans need to support him.

4-15 season and a decade of mediocrity save last year did him in. It's time to really invest in some of our lagging non-revenue sports. Michigan is not consistently competing for NC's at the same level as some of their peers are like UNC, UVA, Fla,Texas, many Pac-12 teams, etc.

Despite the increase in parity, the BCS National Championship is still dominated by traditional powers.

The BCS winners have been: Tennesse, FSU, Oklahoma, Miami, OSU, Florida, Texas, LSU, USC, Auburn, and Bama.

Teams in the middle might be more packed together, but at the very top it's been as it's always been.

Couldn't they have just built a new bball arena for all the money they'll be pouring into this renovation?  It's not like Crisler is some college bball mecca that we need to save at all costs.

Len is a great teacher.

The Accounting classes have (or had, when Ross was a 2-year program)  a B- median curve, which is the same as many other undergrad courses.

Also if a professor named Damian is still teaching the OMS class on supply chains, he is the best prof I had at Ross.

Michigan seems to have issues winning National Championships.  Is ths a holdover from Bo's emphasis on winning the Big Ten?  8 NC's in 19 years isn't great given our huge resource advantage.  We also lack a completely dominant national power in one sport like Arkansas T&F, UNC W Soccer, Penn St Volleyball, UCLA Softball, etc. that's good for raking in NC's.

I believe you will see Women's Tennis be our next Michigan power, as their new coach has been hauling in the top recruiting class in the nation and has already won two BTT's.  Men's soccer will also start competing for BTT's, but are probably a long way away from competing consistently for NC's, even considering last year's run.

unlike other professions where you need a tangible skillset (engineering, cs, hard sciences), you can go into "business" with any degree.  top financial firms routinely take the smartest students they can find, not just business admin majors.

I don't consider 40% admit rate to be all too impressive.  About 3 years ago it was at 42%, then went up to 50%.  How about we cut class sizes from 6,000 down to the mid 4,000s like it was a couple of years ago, and not have economy triples, student lounges turned into dorm rooms, and overflow housing.

I hope we can become the elite public university again, and not continue to be gradually passed by UCLA, UVA, and UNC.

I guess it depends how you define "best" then.  While I certainly get chills watching M come out and touch banner, I think the best traditions are also the unique ones.  Lots of teams touch different objects as their tradition.  I find that the uniqueness of Auburn's war eagle FSU's Chief Osceola makes up my definition of best.  And, they each have a strong tradition in their respective schools. 

Also, Notre Dame's "Play Like a Champion Today" was put up by Lou Holtz in 1986.  I don't find that to be steeped in tradition.

I used to live there and wondered about that big abandoned-looking factory building next to the train tracks.  There's also Fingerle lumber yard which I thought went bankrupt and was sold  for private development a couple years ago, but last time I was in AA it was still operational.

I don't think anybody should be deferring to a double Engineering degree holder for style advice.  The Big Chill jersey was awesome, and so are the football throwbacks, though I'd prefer we didn't hop on the throwback bandwagon.

We should pay homage to the Rose Bowl with a Roses division.

I think this is Hoke's recruiting strategy:

We're not going to be able to sign the top 25 players in the country, only a team with insane in-state talent like USC, UF, or UT can bank on that happening.  For everybody else, you fill your class with good players who fit your system and try to land a couple great ones.

So, Hoke is filling our "good" player slots with midwest talent because they are the most-likely to commit to Michigan.  With half our class locked up with solid players, he can now spend the next year swining for the fences, brining in only the best national talent.

I think by signing day, you'll see this class add a couple high 4* or 5* players and it will look, rankings-wise, like a typical Carr class.

Are there really this many solid contributers in Michigan this year?  Per Brian's posts on in-state talent last week, it seems there end up being only about 5 quality D1 players per year.

We took three TE's last year.  Three again this year?  Seems like we could use an extra safety instead.

Tresel knowingly played ineligible players for an entire season because he wanted to win.  He then signed a written affidavit to the NCAA stating he had no knowledge of such violations.  The third strike will come out soon, then he's out.

This will be vaporware.  Scientific journals publish that a team has discovered a breakthrough and the next big thing is just around the corner all the time.  With the right materials, and ignoring the limitation of needing a concentrated light source greater than the sun, they could possibly achieve 10% efficiency.  Don't hold your breath.

For all the shit the every-three-weekly writes about the Daily being terrible, it's actually a pretty great student newspaper. I go to grad school at another top public school now, and their newspaper is filled with shallow articles and just plain drivel. The daily has always had some great in-depth pieces and writers who actually moved onto good journalism careers.

Why not just hold a mid-season round robin tournament and declare a "Big Ten" hockey champion without crushing all the current conferences?

This winning streak is one of the first times during Beilein's tenure at Mich that we've executed an offense that hasn't aimlessly passed the ball around the perimeter.  As good as the offense looks now, it was pretty Amaker-esque the past 3 years.  I suppose once 3's started dropping the rest openend up, but I think fans were fair to criticize the three-point-heave offense that we  witnessed for a LONG time.

I played hockey and soccer growing up.  I never had coaches scream at me for making a mistake on the ice, because I was always trying.  In soccer I had a yeller, and it never made me correct my mistakes or aim to play harder, it just made me want to shove my foot up his ass and think about ways to get him back for being a dick.

I have to imagine there are lots of kids who would respond that way.
