The only issue with this, is I can't see many schools agreeing to let a player transfer if it hurts them. To many players transferring is actually a good thing, as it allows them to go to a school where they will get more playing time. Although your proposal is definitely coming from a good place, I think it would have the unintended consequence of making it harder for athletes to transfer.

Although you are technically correct that it cannot predict CTE, it is known that CTE is caused by repeated traumatic injuries. Therefore, it isn't really something that you would see happen in real time. The goal of this device, and the one the OP mentioned are to more readily identify individuals who had a significant collision and possible acute brain injury. Decreasing repeative brain injury (especially in those who have had recent brain trauma) will decrease the amount of CTE in the future.
I hope that wasn't too nuanced, however, I think saying that "the device can't diagnose CTE so its useless" is a little too big picture. If you can pick up and treat small injuries, the current understanding is that the risk of "big injuries" (ie. CTE) will also decrease.

There are actually a lot of really cool technologies that are being used to determine if brain injury is occuring without the need to get hospital based tests (CT, MRI, etc) . One of the more promising ones is Brainscope, which uses EEG and a phone app(So it is incredibly mobile). It is currently pending FDA approval, but is in advanced clinical trials at hospitals, with the military and NFL teams.

I really dislike this logic. Glasgow's family's ability to pay should have nothing to do with him getting a scholarship.

I wasn't blaming the AD over the University, they are both to blame in most cases. ADs are spending too much money and the Universities are generally supportive of this. I don't see it changing anytime soon, but it still grinds my gears a bit.

My problem isn't with subsidizing. Obviously, a University should be able to provide services to students outside the classroom. My issue is with with what I perceive to be an arms race between the Athletic Departments across America. If you are Michigan, OSU, etc. go ahead and spend the cash, you have it. But if you dont, FreddieMercuryHayes put it best " If it can't self support, then maybe time to downsize and not have Cadillac facilities."

|1 year 6 days ago||Modern day athletic||
Modern day athletic departments shouldn't be financed off the back of students. If everyone was running athletics like they were 50 years ago -- less extravagant facilities/smaller coaches salaries -- I wouldn't see a problem student fees. However with the current cost of tuition I don't think it is fair to tack on money to run the athletic department. Make it opt-in and don't force people to take out student loans to fund the AD if they don't care to go to games. Although it is almost heretical to say on this board...athletics is not part of the core mission of the university and shouldn't be a mandatory fee.

Of note you have 3 12's winning, a 15 making the sweet 16 for the first time ever and a victory for a 13 and 14 seed in the first round. Also, St. Louis, a 4 seed thought to be a team that would give Louisville fits, bowed out to a 12 seed. One thing that was screaming out to me here was that no one is looking at the extenuating circumstances. IMHO one of the big reasons why Morris jumped when he did was the weak draft class, as many people were (correctly) expecting a lock-out. He left because he thought that it was his best opportunity for a high draft position. Burke doesn't have to deal with any of this stuff...so his decisions are a lot more conventional.

I don't know if I'm the only one who has the two forever linked -- but a running tandem like Biakabutuka and Wheatley was a sight to behold and I hope we can come close to approximating it sometime in the future. Could you imagine how lethal a running attack of Tim, Tyrone and Denard would be?

The thing is, almost no one likes SNL when it is being made. My favorite seasons by far were the early 90s with stars such as Chris Rock, Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, Norm Macdonald, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, etc. At the time almost no one appreciated a lot of the stuff they were doing and consistantly everyone said "SNL sucks" it was better in the olden days.
Whether this is do to the comedy being before its time or just the appeal of seeing stars before they made it big...I'm not entirely sure. You can see the same thing with people's opinions of Will Farrell on SNL in the early 2000s. It was appreciated a lot less back in the day.

But we, as a Americans, don't have any systems where the "strongest" team wins the championship. All this playoff model would do is give an opportunity for the drama to be played on the field instead of inside a bunch of computers/by the voting of a bunch of people who don't have to justify their votes.
tl;dr A playoff would be way more fun and look at the Superbowl XLII. Does anyone really think the Giants were a better team than the Patriots? No. But no one cares, because the Giants won the game.

As much as it blows to have calls like this - he and all of the other refs listed above are considered to be some of the best -- all because they have been around forever. If you are around for 15 years - with 30+ games a year - even with a modest 30 whistles per game - that is a shit ton of calls. There are going to be some atrocious calls mixed in with the good.
The result of last game's shitty call was terrible - but you have to just believe in the equilibrium of the universe. The bad calls will even out over time.

That game was bad. And I was there. Although I was too young to truly comprehend the magnitude of suck-tude contained by the game - I do have an interesting story. My dad thought the game was over, so we watched it all unfold from 60-or so rows up at the top of the tunnel of section 6. I don't know if you could have a last second play unfold any worse from a Michigan stand-point. Everything went Colorado's way.

Everything is a possibility. However, as many people have said - DRob made a lot of mistakes last year. If he makes a large leap in decision making, he will probably be behind Tate again this year. I don't think we will see him as a starter - but I do hope he can be seen as some sort of passing threat. If so- I hope to see a Leak/Teabow like combination of Tate/DRob at QB.

Although I agree Shaq doesn't have the "razzle-dazzle" of Lebron, Kobe or Hakeem, he has been an incredibly consistent dominating force down low. Although the majority of his shots are within a few feet of the basket, his agility for a big man, size and power have made him the most dominating post presence until the rise of Dwight Howard.
His large personality has led to a lot of his fame, however averaging 24 ppg, 11 rpg and 2.3 bpg over 15+ years demonstrates incredible consistency and dominance. Compound that with 3 finals MVPs, and 4 titles with two separate teams - even without the huge Shaq persona he would be considered one of the top players of the generation and an obvious HOFer.

While I believe the bowl record does show improvement by the Big 10, I still think using it to compare conferences is faulty. Last year and for many years before the Big 10 put two teams in the BCS. As a result the B10 played up in games and performed poorly. This year, we actually got to play relatively even competition. I think bowl performance on its own is an overused meme and really isn't as indicative as pundits push it to be.

Seconded. This is a sentiment that I think all of us have to some extent. Losing sucks. It is difficult to cope with losing seasons when you are used to a winning program. However, both Dhani and I share something in common. We are willing to be patient and trust RR to succeed in the near future. His rope is getting shorter, but he still has slack left. I don't think anyone on this board would disagree with this sentiment:
Next year is pivotal. If RR and M have a successful season we are in business. If not, we may have to question his long term potential. The time of reckoning is not yet upon us.

Titling this thread "Pam Ward Hates Injured Players" is sensationalizing a complete non-issue. For an example in everyday life, lets say you are playing pick-up basketball. Everyone hates the guy who calls every ticky-tack foul. Sometimes you just need to let the small issues go.

|6 years 50 weeks ago||I agree with you, but to a||
I agree with you, but to a point. I think the poster came off a little harsh and am willing to grant him this caveat. The system doesn't suck, but there has been a lot of debate of the ability of the system to produce a bonafide championship caliber team. Although you can make a winning team with his system, it hasn't been proven if a live by the three - die by the three team can succeed on the highest level.
I would compare this to the run and gun Suns. They had a new novel system that a lot of people didn't think would succeed at the highest level. In the end, they almost made it (and might have made it if a few more calls went their way). It still remains to be seen if a Beilein style team can truly succeed, or if there is that ceiling that Brian and other posters have alluded to previously.
I am hoping that the ceiling does not exist. However, I don't think bringing this point up is naive or even saying the system sucks...it is just saying that the system hasn't been tested with a national contender.
|6 years 50 weeks ago||Yeah, I used indirect support||
Yeah, I used indirect support because I was looking on the other tab and obviously couldn't find the "direct institutional support" column. Still, I have major problems with schools that support their athletic departments and pay large sums of money to their coaches. On one hand, I understand that the prestige from athletic prowess can help make the university better. OTOH, how would you feel if you were going to CMU, getting your tuition jacked up every year and having the school paying $11+M to the athletic department every year.
Also - I would like to point out the amazing shape Michigan's athletic department is in. Not only is the AD financially independent, it actually donates money to the University every year. So the program is a benefit both publicity wise and financially the the University as a whole.

I don't think anyone has a problem with these kind of payments if they are being completely covered by the athletic department. According to this link on school AD budgets, MSU spends $2.8M in funds to pay for the athletic department, the most institutional support for an athletic department in the conference.
If the AD is completely self supporting, you can pay the coach whatever you want. If the school is spending money on the department, I see no reason why this criticism isn't valid.

Blizzards before January are not out of the question. Although AA hasn't been swamped yet this year, the entire western part of the state was hit hard and WI declared a state of emergency after getting 17'' in a storm a few weeks ago. So that kind of snowfall is not out of the question.
Also, do you want to have the potential for a repeat of the 1950 M-OSU Snow Bowl? Or even a more recent example, how good of a game would it be if we had conditions like the M-NW game from last year. Although snow sounds cool, there is always the possibility for tons of snow, hail, freezing rain, etc. Games played in those conditions are usually sloppy and don't do too much to make a team look good.

Ummm Wow. Calm down a bit. You have a few good points, but you also have a strange amount of 6 am RAGE.
Still, I will agree with you that the MMB has not harnessed the same amount of energy as they have in years past. The piped in music has also helped to point this out, especially when some fans react better to the piped-in music than the MMB.
Although, I completely reject the OP's tone towards the marching band I do partially agree with him on the MMB choice of music/shows this year. I wish the band could have played some more exciting music. The opera show was a flop. I don't really remember many of the other shows because they just weren't that interesting. I do remember the Monty Python sketch, Bohemian Rhapsody played by a mob of horns in the corner by the student section and the Guitar Hero show from two years ago. The band shouldn't be playing technically difficult concert music. That is for the winter seasons. The fall is for fun and exciting music with performance shenanigans thrown in. Bring on the skits, the dancing, the pelvic thrusts and the piling into the corner by the student section.
Finally, stop complaining about volume. They are playing as loud as they can to still sound good. Here is an analogy for all of you who haven't in Band. The blaring instruments sound about as good as a speaker turned up louder than it reasonably should go.

Absolutely - If it hadn't been for camp offers we never would have gotten the Coner!
In all seriousness - very good point. With all the HS players in the country it is impossible to see the vast majority of them play. Camp commitments mean the coaches have liked how they play and how they interact in a football environment.
The star system provides a decent starting point, but they are by no means gospel.
|7 years 2 days ago||Although I tend to agree with||
Although I tend to agree with you, sportswriters live on facts. There is no way the FREEP staff or the other coaches were able to see one if any of the individual games by the players. The only game the majority saw with these kids was the championship games, which Gardner played poorly in. As a result, they turned to stats.
I agree with you that it isn't the best metric, but stats sometimes play the biggest role in giving out the awards even in the pros. While it may not be the best way to dole out awards, it is almost impossible for sportswriters to see all of the games in a season, so stats is the way to go.

|7 years 2 days ago||Interesting premise, I am a||
Interesting premise, I am a little confused what you are trying to prove with your findings. Although the WR number seems low, I'm not sure if the variance is significant. The point you are trying to prove is interesting, but I don't think looking at the number of players from each position will give a statistically significant number.
FWIW - Here is the biochemistry behind the high altitude training:
If you train at altitude you will secrete EPO (a natural hormone which is used as a PED) which signals for the body to make more Red Blood Cells. More RBCs leads to better oxygenation and better performance.
In terms of actual performance, yes, people from high altitudes will perform better in endurance events, however, this advantage will go away if you move to a low altitude area. The advantage is for the short-term not long term.

IMO this rule sucks for us, but if it is implemented on a national scale it would be a net positive. Attrition can always be created by the coach. If this is from the NCAA its good because it will hopefully help to stop Alabama-like shenanigans.
If it is just for the Big 10 I think its weird. Correct me if I'm wrong, but for the most part the Big 10 doesn't take part in over-signing stuff much, if at all.
|7 years 2 days ago||Personally I don't see a||
Personally I don't see a problem with awarding Jason Fracassa the spot on the dream team as QB. The guy put up monster numbers and set state records for completions in a season and career, most yards in a season and career, and most touchdowns thrown in a season and career.
Just because he doesn't have Gardner's pro/college potential, doesn't mean he shouldn't be recognized for having the most statistically dominant season in Michigan HS Football History.
This comes down to the age-old question. Do you give the award to the person who is regarded as having more talent or the one who puts up the best numbers. Whichever side you stand on this argument, you can't say Jason Fracassa didn't put up the stats to earn the award.
FWIW, according to Rivals Fracassa is being recruited primarily for Baseball.
