what I've been saying for years. Not every kid is cut out for college..... a lot of kids choose which college they attend on scholarship as to how it relates to their NFL draft status.
IMHO this is not what the college game should be about, it was originally created to give kids who did not have the financial means necessary to obtain a higher education the avenue to get a college education.
If you had a pro league for 18 to 23 year olds you could pay those kids whose sole goal is to get to the NFL. Those kids who know the value of a college education could still go that route.
This way everyone wins, the kids who want to get paid do just that, the kids who seek a degree can do so. I feel that college football is being loosened upon more and more as a developmental league for the NFL and is somewhat losing its luster.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Hell, Saban doesn't care about these kids at all..||
Last year he jerked a kid's offer after he committed to Bama because a higher ranked kid said he would commit to them.
While I can understand that teams want to acquire the best talent this is the kind of thing that should give your program a black eye not elevate it to a higher level.

However I'm @ the tipping point, for what I spend on tickets I could have had a 70" LED this year and now that everyone but students has to pay a PSL even makes it more and more of a strectch financially.
I love going to the Big House though and watching the Wolverines play, just how much is the question.
|14 weeks 4 days ago||1995 clinched it for me...||
As my wife and I were walking into the Big House on that November day we were behind a group of buckeye fans, and one of them was going on about how We're going to give the ball to our All-American running back Eddie George who will have the All-American tackle Orlando Pace blocking for him... If they stop that we'll throw the ball to our All-American tight end Ricky Dudley, if he's covered there's always our All-American WR Terry Glenn.... we can't lose....
That was when I spoke up... and said... Hey! this is Michigan and Ohio State this is the Rivalry Game I promise you this team will be ready to play... The buckeye fans dismissed me as just another Wolverine crank....
You all know what happened that day... Biakbuta ran wild on the OSU Defense and the young freshman Charles Woodson established himself as a force by intercepting a Terry Glenn target in the end zone to kill an OSU drive before the half and we never looked back... I will got to my grave with the fourth quarter memory of Tim Biakabutka running for a first down to ice the game carrying three OSU defenders on his back... I swear that the sun broke through a cloud and the rays shined down on Number 21 as he rushed for 313 yards that day...
I never felt more vindicated in my life, '95was a disappointing season to say the least but beating OSU on that Saturday afternoon lessened the bitterness of that season..
That being said Tressell with his smarmy cocksucker look drove my hatred of the Buckeye's to new levels of hatred. Re-sodding the toilet bowl 1 week before the 2006 game rates as one of the crappiest things ever done to gain a home field advantage..
Screw this... Oh How I Hate Ohio State!

I was mostly going from memory and got my Rose Bowls mixed up.. Sorry about that.
|25 weeks 2 days ago||Bo's biggest heartbreaker for me was....||
the 16-14 loss to Purdue in 1976. Michigan was ranked #1 all season long up until then and they dominated the oppositon in every phase of the game, #1 offense #1 defense and they finished out the Big Ten season with a total domination of the Buckeyes in the 'Shoe' 22-0.
If we don't lose to Purdue and the Ref's don't give Charles White a 'Phantom Touchdown' in the Rose Bowl it would have been one of the most dominating single seasons in College Football history.
Michigan ended the season ranked first in the country in total offense (448.1 yards per game), scoring offense (38.7 points per game), and scoring defense (7.2 points per game).
It was magical season until November 9th 1976, I listened to the game on the radio and couldn't believe my ears when it was over and we lost.

He may have said things that were unpleasant for the program and those of us that love it to hear, but he believed in his heart that they were true. You can't fault a man for speaking what he sees as the truth.
Like it or not he is part of the Michigan Family and we should accept him warts and all.

|1 year 24 weeks ago||The TD run at the end of that awesome tribute video...||
was the first of two long TD runs by Ty Wheatley that got us back into that game, it was an awesome display and we were going up against an undefeated Penn State team that featured Ki-Jana Carter at tailback. Wheatley kicked his ass.
It was too bad that we came out on the short end of the scoreboard that day. After Tyrone scored his second TD in the third quarter, he took off his helmet and did the Superman pose in our endzone.
I thought for sure he was going to lead us single handedly to victory that day. But alas it was not to be, he reinjured his shoulder and the freshman version Tshumanga Biakabutuka was not yet up to that task.
I have seen many great backs play in Michigan Stadium, Tony Boles, Leroy Hoard, Ricky Powers, Tshumanga Biakabutuka , A-Train, Chris Perry, Harlan Huckleby, Butch Woolfolk, Mike Hart and the oppositions players, IMHO Tryone Wheatley had it all, speed, power ball security, pass catching ability, and he is the gold standard by which I judge Michigan running backs.
Thanks for the Video WH, it brought back some great memories.

I'll put this here.... From Wikipedia
"At Michigan, he redshirted as a true freshman. Then, as a redshirt freshman for the 2007 Michigan Wolverines football team, he battled for the starting middle linebacker position and appeared to have lost the position early in the season. However, after an injury he became a regular starter. He concluded the season with thirteen and twelve tackle efforts against bitter rivals Michigan State and Ohio State, respectively. He started his redshirt sophomore season with a Big Ten Conference defensive player of the week, fifteen-tackle effort for the 2008 Michigan Wolverines football team. He finished the season as an honorable mention All-Big Ten Conference selection. Just after earning 2009 midseason Butkus Award watchlist recognition, he was removed from the starting lineup and saw limited action in the final four games."
He fell off the planet after RR took over, and I may be stating the obvious here, young football talent needs to be developed, this is usually accomplished by coaching young men up, not throwing them under the bus in the face of losses as RR often did.
How does someone go from midseason Butkus Award watchlist to part time player to wrap up the season?!?

Jim Harbaugh can talk the talk because he walks the walk.
Brady Hoke. brings much joy and gladness to my heart, but I so wanted Michigan to successfully court Harbaugh, who knew that he would become so white hot at the end of the last season. I am very glad Coach Hoke leads Michigan he gets it, looking back on the whole thing Brady Hoke is what Michigan needs and vice versa.
I figured that Harbaugh's Rah Rah style wouldn't carry over to the pro's, boy was I wrong.
I thought the 49ers would be in the running for the Andrew Luck bowl instead they are in the NFC championship game.
Congrats Jim you are always true blue in my heart!

I can hear him now; That Taylor Lewan is one Big Hoss on that Mighigan line!
|2 years 16 weeks ago||God I miss him....||
I was alright unti I saw this stuff here today, I've spent most of the day fighting back the tears, I never met him in person but he was a great force in my life. His moral and ethics were in the place where I have strived to be all my life, no-nonsense no excuses and how hard work is it's own reward.
I got a lot from my Dad as well but Bo was the other other piece of the puzzle in my youth. I'll never forget being at an Ohio State game in the '90's and there was a contest to win a trip to Michigan's bowl game and he was drawing the winner at halftime, When He walked out to the 50 yard line to draw the winner the "Bo is God" chant started and the love that poured into the old hole in the ground was just amazing. Of course he would hear nothing of it and quieted the crowd so that he could draw the name of the fan that would see the Team win it's bowl game.
Sorry if I'm rambling but Bo Schembechler has left a lasting impression on me that I will never forget, and I nver played for him or met him on any personal level. But I respected him and he (without knowing) helped me become the man I am today.

said WTF DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING !?!?!?!?!?!? Very loudly so as to draw attention to what was going on.
Then I'd have reported it to my Boss just like he did, and then if there wasn't a story in the newspaper the next day announcing the arrest of Jerry Sandusky for the commission of acts of preversion (Col B.A.T. Guano Pronunciation) against a youth I would have drove to the police station and reported it to the desk officer on duty. If no action was taken by the local P.D. I would have called the state authorities.
As the father of two children I would not rest until I made sure that this monster was behind bars.

I agree that comparison is most heinous. Joe Pa has generally been one of the good guys of College Football, it'll be a sad end to a storied career if he gets any Sandusky slime on him.

He's a difference maker, pretty soon teams are gonna have to put in a package just for him.

I hoped for a better showing in the bowl game, but I knew that that wasn't happening after the football bust.
It was time for a change, and I'm hoping that Hoke comes through for the Michigan tradition.

A question for those in attendance last night. Was the the most alive you've ever seen the Big House?
This is my 17th season as a season ticket holder, and with the possible exception of the '97 victory over Ohio State I have never seen the crowd into a game as last night.
What an event, it lived up to every bit of the hype!

Get over it, and as far as 'manball' is concerned I am of the opinion that football is a tough guy game and punching your opponent repeatedly in the face is a good thing. It preys on their mind.

Even last year when one would expect to see improvement as the season processed the same guys were making the same unforced errors in November as they were making back in September. I for one am looking forward to the re-emphasis on the fundamentals and toughness, I believe this will make a huge difference as the season wears on.

Bo wasn't a “Michigan Man” I mention that passage and try to explain that was the moment that Bo decided that his blood ran Maize and Blue. All the events that happened prior to him taking the head coaching job were stops along the way to the destination.
That was a great post that sums up what Bo's makeup was all about.

I have bled Maize and Blue ever since.

The rest of your points are absolutely correct. I'm not buying.
Since OSU won't fire him IMHO it's the NCAA's responsibility to make the job situation in Columbus untenable for 'Senator' Tressel.
Maybe docking 10 schollies a year for three years and a 2 year Bowl ban as well as Vacating the 2010 season would help Jim make a career move in the right direction.

Shining moment in Michigan football history and smear feces all over it. That was a young team with a freshman quaterback that did much more than was expected. The way Braylon Edwards took over that game was something that I will always remember.
Oh and they did not give Texas that game, freaking Vince Young took it on the field of battle. If I remember correctly Michigan scored to take the lead with about 1:45 left and I told everyone that we left them with too much time on the clock and the way that guy moved them down the field for the last second field goal, was just a great effort on his part.
Just think of it this way.... Imagine yourself as an 18 year old kid in front of 70 to 90 thousand people screaming for you to be torn asunder every time you line up under center. I think Chad Henne performed astoundingly well during his freshman campaign. And I thnk that LLoyd Carr and his staff did a great job of preparing him for the success that he helped Michigan achieve that year.
|3 years 6 weeks ago||I can only agree with this 100 percent||
this is how you win football games. The most disconcerting thing about the Rich Rod era for me (and there were a lot of things i didn't like) was the lack of toughness at he line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
In all my years of watching Michigan football I've never seen a team get pushed around on the line of scrimmage (on both sides of the ball) like the last three years.
Remember "If they can't score they can't win!"
|3 years 7 weeks ago||This is a great post....||
Thanks for the info, I remember that '94 season and how that team was snake bit from the Colorado game on, I definitely questioned Moeller's play calling near the end (the handoff to Che Foster especially comes to mind). The ball being stolen from Biakabutuka by a Penn State Linebacker after the play was over, just being beaten on both sides ofthe ball by Wisky and the loss to tOSU. I kind of felt that the players gave up on that season and questioned whether or not this was the right leadership for the team. Anyway the rest is history.

I've been sending prayers his way for some time now, I guess that I'll have to move him closer to the top of the list. A great guy ran into him after a game a few years back, he talked to my wife and I for quite awhile about Bo and the program. Get well Jim!

.... there was a drawing for a contest to win tickets to the Bowl game and Bo was drawing the winning name. As he walked out onto the field the chant "BO IS GOD" began and grew into a deafining roar that could only be quieted by the man himself, I'm telling you that the loved that poured out into that stadium that day was something that I'll take to my grave.
I know Bo felt the devotion of the legions of fans that day. I would think that Jim Harbaugh would like to one day ride off into the sunset with the knowledge that so many would do the same for him should he deliver in the same manner.

If Harbaugh comes, Rich Rod will be an ESPN analyst for a year and then will take the HC job at Clemson.
When he got hired by Michigan, Tommy Bowden (a mutual friend of the family) told me that we made a great hire and that the fans in Clemson love Rich Rod.
He'll do just fine there and that's the type of program that he needs to be running.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||I agree with that||
But a decent pass rush (which we don't have) could have exposed his shortcomings and the coaching staff way underestimated his ability.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||Because it would have been a win against a Top Tier B10 team||
....And what should have been an easy one at that, against a team without an identity, starting a walk-on sophmore quarterback, under achieving (up to that point) running back. It was the perfect set-up for a signature win for the RRod program at U-M at night on National Television in front of a hostile crowd and instead he laid a giant egg and showed that this team was a pretender against the top tier of the B10, something that was borne out against Wisky and the Buckeyes. Way back in '97 a Michigan team established it's identity against a really good PSU team in the same setting. RRod couldn't get it done against a PSU team that really isn't that good. The table was set RRod failed to deliver. He needs to go....
|3 years 14 weeks ago||They were ripe for the picking||
PSU was a team in turmoil when Michigan headed to Happy Valley, a walk-on sophmore QB and an underachieving Evan Royster had Dick Rod setup for the signature win that he so desperately needed in his third year. Instead he got his ass handed to him by the fossil Joe Pa. This was the straw that set the current chain of events in motion.
