I'VE HAD JUST ABOUT ENOUGH OF YOU SONNY
|1 hour 29 min ago||my point is that the issue||
is not the age of the person driving the car, but solely the action of bullying and being thoughtless and assholey.
i don't care if the person in the car is a physics professor or a pizza boy, it's just the idea of picking on people for no reason other than to feel an inflated sense of coolness.
|3 hours 37 min ago||i mean||
i don't really think this would be any more morally defensible had the person in the car been younger...
|3 hours 41 min ago||jeez||
besides the awefulness had that happened, just imagine the fucking shit show that ensue had that happened in this situation. racial flame wars would abound, no doubt.
|3 hours 47 min ago||he didn't||
but the difference in degrees of insanity between the two actions makes that argument a red herring.
i mean it would be ridiculous to tell your child, "don't throw a snowball at somebody or else they may shoot you in the face."
sure, a person could retaliate in that way, but that's more an indictment of a very different problem with our society than it is a reasonable deterrant for those people's immature behaviors.
|4 hours 2 min ago||for such a simple concept||
it seems that the "nuances" of consent are lost on many people.
|4 hours 3 min ago||woa now||
thinking it's ok to shoot somebody for throwing snowballs at your car is on a whole different level of mental insanity than thinking it's ok to bully people by throwing snowballs at their cars.
|4 hours 8 min ago||it's like you're the lorax||
except instead of speaking for the trees, you speak for the immature douchebags
|4 hours 23 min ago||perhaps||
by starting his car in D and not waiting for the prankster in front of him to get out of the way
|4 hours 51 min ago||those are not mutually exclusive||
many pranks are forms of bullying, especially when they're done on random strangers who have no possible way to consent and probably wouldn't consent if given the chance.
|4 hours 54 min ago||in what sense||
old people thinking the world is being pussified?
or old people thinking kids these days are a bunch of immature assholes?
|5 hours 4 min ago||i'm not really against it in terms of it being dangerous||
i'm just against it in terms of it being disrespectful and douchey and indicative of these kids with inflated senses of self-importance thinking they're way cooler than they actually are.
|5 hours 12 min ago||individuals are dicks||
and mobs are douches. it is what it is.

had an opportunity to gain major respect by saying: "you have to play through that, you're at duke" but sadly he just said "on the road."
|5 days 2 hours ago||this is not the kind of game||
you want to see ever.
but especially not when I (and i assume many in the michigan fanbase) are in doom and gloom moods.
|5 days 2 hours ago||every time levert does something good on offense||
he does something worse on defense
|5 days 2 hours ago||i think it may be more||
that duke's gameplan is to make levert our offense

|5 days 2 hours ago||i don't want to berate michigan players||
but his defensive performance in this game is not good.
to his credit, he's the only person attacking the basket on the offensive end. so, it hasn't been good, but if nobody else is gonna step up then i guess props to levert for doing so.
|5 days 2 hours ago||ok levert||
i'll tone it down. but at the defense end... comical.

1/2 attributed 100% because of the refs. 1/2 because duke is outplaying us.

|1 week 1 day ago||indeed, although,||
as a generally negative poster, when (IF--lol i got jokes) michigan returns to glory, i'll have to suffer through people posting things such as, "i hope those people who were so down on michigan don't come out now that we're winning" or "bandwagon fans not allowed."
kinda sucks because i can't really brag and say things like "ha told you our team sucks" when we lose without sounding like a total dbag

|1 week 1 day ago||lol||

|1 week 1 day ago||i guess i'm just very confused||
by Brian's comments then.
i interpreted his comments to mean that, as a reasonably emotional person, he (and this is where maybe i'm confused--but i take it to mean the board as well) should be able to vent without caring about other people being upset with whatever comes out.
am i like a million miles off?
|1 week 1 day ago||why nvm i thought that was a really good response||
one which i still can't formulate a reasonable answer to...
i guess my answer would be that us fans/mgoblogcommunity aren't really a team, we're just a group of people with 1 common bond trying to maximize our enjoyment of our fandom.
optimisim and pessimism don't mesh well, and it seems like the board is more divided than it has in the past, so people are all having less fun as a whole.
|1 week 1 day ago||ok true||
i suppose if someone wants to vent, their purpose may be to troll or spread grinch-like bahumbugness or just be a dbag.
but, just to clarify, why just no? i didn't mean purpose by saying it's their "right." i just mean't their purpose.
|1 week 1 day ago||i preferred this comment||
when it just said that misery is my right :-/
|1 week 1 day ago||well it's hard to separate||
how much of the negativity on the board is b/c the mgoboard no longer has a voting system or b/c michigan went through another season full of disappointing losses.
|1 week 1 day ago||i disagree||
fandom is about liking michigan. individual differences in human beings is what determines optimism, pessimism, delusion, trolling, etc.
it has nothing to do with what is "easier." it just has to do with innate human characteristics.
you can't go from saying negative fans "make it about them(selves)" to saying "Personally" in the next sentence without also making it about yourself.
if someone is negative and wants to vent, that's their purpose of going on the blog.
|1 week 1 day ago||because we lost||
and some people prefer not to dwell on "moral victories."
|1 week 1 day ago||yeah i feel like he's more calling out||

|1 week 1 day ago||there's literally nothing||

|1 week 1 day ago||I mean I don't know how you want to compare||
Success. Lions are in decent position to make playoffs, win their division this season. They have one of the best offenses in NFL. Their coach is shitty, sure but players overcome his shittiness.

|1 week 1 day ago||Or||
Shame on Michigan fans for not buying the tickets. Free market and such
|1 week 1 day ago||i guess i just don't understand the source of optimism||
we've had singular good performances from this exact same team. none of them were indicators of future good performances. ND--great performance on both sides of the ball. How do we respond? Akron and UConn. Turn it around against Minnesota. Play amazing offense against Indiana Shit the bed against MSU. Lose to Nebreska, show signs of life against Northwestern, shit the bed against OSU.
It's impossible to take anything away from the game in terms of predicting future success. Only clear positive that I could say you 100% take away is that we did all the intangibles right and should be proud of the team. We didn't look like classless jackasses, we responded to adversity, we played injured, we played above expectations, we repped the maize and blue hard.
But we've never had clear reason to doubt the intangibles at any point this season.

that idiots are expensive
|1 week 4 days ago||yeah my basic argument||
is that, if we're going to get into the admittedly useless argument of whose fandom is best, then we need to acknowledge the continuum of fandom.
Type A people are endless bundles of positivism and optimism, and will support the team by going to games regardless of on the field product, because that is what they believe in and they enjoy watching Michigan football regardless because it's what they love.
Type B people have a limit at which the on-field product is too crappy/murderously-boring/heartbreaking/unfun to watch, and at this point have a couple main pathways to take.
they can either: a) quit spending money going to games that they suspect they will not enjoy watching, but still spend multiple hours on saturdays watching michigan out of true fandom/sadism; b) quit spending money and quit going to games and find a new hobby until michigan gets better and is fun for them to watch again; c) turn spiteful and spew annoying bs about michigan sucking and owing them something and being stupid.
I'd say path a) makes you just as much a fan as Type A people, but you're just a different person and express your fandom in different ways.
Path b) makes you a fair-weather fan, but not one that we should criticize. Some people just aren't as into football as others, and that's fine, if not good (for mental and heart health reasons).
Patch c) is annoying and stupid, yes, but unfortunately there is a tendency to only recognize this most extreme pathway and generalize all Type B people this way.

pooped my pants
|3 weeks 13 hours ago||My original point||
Even though I changed my original thread title, I still think it has validity and isnt saying what it was being read to say.
My question was basically, removing your emotion from the equation, is winning better for the team longterm. Obviously you want your team to win, but if a win means sticking with an inept coaching staff, I don't think it's 100% obvious that the outcome of winning is better for your team long term. As an example, that kick yesterday going through the uprights helped us to win yesterday, but it has very little predictive value moving forward that we can win again--whereas the poor offensive gameplan and questionable 4th down play calling, etc. are probably better indicators of what will happen in future games.
|3 weeks 13 hours ago||Well I think it depends on how we were to win||
I personally don't think Iowa is a good enough opponent for the results in that game to swing the pendulum at all in favor of keeping the staff. Their defense isn't on an Indiana level of incompetency, and may very well be better than Northwestern's (which bottled us most of the game), but the talent level is so inferior that dominating them wouldn't really feel that impressive. So maybe it's unfair, but nothing that happens next Saturday is really gonna change my opinion on the staff.
Against OSU it's obviously different. If we win by scoring 3 defensive td's, does that really say anything about the offensive staff?
But if we get 2 halfs of the Al Borges we saw in the first half against OSU last year, and against South Carolina, then maybe I grudgingly conclude that he deserves another season to further implement his offense.
The biggest question to me is can we get push from our offensive line against OSU. If we can do that, then I have way more confidence in the offensive staff moving forward.
|3 weeks 14 hours ago||Just my personal opinion||
But I think it's reasonable as a fan to hope for a coaching staff that, in my view as a fan, puts the team in a position to win games.
It's also my personal opinion that it's tolerable for fans to have no faith in coaches who, in their opinion, don't put the team in a postion to win games.
Now, I don't believe it's reasonable for those fans to be all like "THISISMICHIGANFURRFOOKSAK," but I tried to avoid that as much as possible.
|3 weeks 14 hours ago||My question still remains then||
What would you need to see, outcome/execution/gameplan/etc., in these next three games for you to have confidence in the offensive coaching staff moving forward? Is three games enough for them to demonstrate anything of substance to you?
|3 weeks 14 hours ago||I'm not talking about trading wins for losses||
Because that's not how it works. I'm talking about, 1,2,3 seasons down the line, we look back at these next three games and ask ourselves, retroactively, was that good for the program?
It may be dumb to talk about it now, but many people have been doing the same thing in looking back at Hoke's first season. People say things like, it made us have too high of expectations, or, it gave him too much job security and have too little accountability for mistakes. That being said, I'd rather have won the sugarbowl than lost it, just like I'd rather beat OSU than lose this year.
But at the same time, it's still possible to say that losing may be better for the program if we get rid of Borges and get lucky enough to have a better coordinator.
|3 weeks 14 hours ago||I dunno, I feel like my line of thinking is justifiable||
Perhaps I've been blindly listening to random internet posters who say Hoke is loyal to a fault when it comes his coaching staff, but I do worry that he won't make changes that would otherwise benefit the team.
So if my premise is incorrect, and Hoke isn't like that, then yes, this thread makes no sense.
But if it's true (and it's impossible to prove one way or the other), then I think, as a fan, I have every right to worry that a couple lucky wins and we'll be stuck with an inept coaching staff for the next couple of years.
The basis of my argument is that winning today is not necessarily indicative of your success at winning tomorrow. Did yesterday's win give you any confidence in the coaching staff's ability? So if we keep winning like that, what makes you think the staff will do a better job in the future?
|3 weeks 14 hours ago||I'll go ahead and defend my honor on this one||
I think we're in a very interesting position because the majority of people will blindly gauge success by number of wins, and not by how we got there. If we go 10-3 to finish the season, that will invariably garner a lot of momentum for Hoke to stick with our current coaching staff. And, I'm not sure if you've been on the blog at all, but it's not an uncommon opinion to think that our offensive coaching staff is a tad inept.
We've also demonstrated the ability to win games in spite of poor execution, poor gameplans, and shitty coaching. So, just because we win 3 games, it means nothing about the promise of our program moving forward. If we hold on to Borges and Funk, whose to say we don't have the exact same problems moving forward?
If you think the answers to these issues are blatantly obvious, then you are clearly on a level far beyond me, and I submit to your greatness.

|3 weeks 4 days ago||Is that unique to soccer though?||
I know at my high school (Pioneer in Ann Arbor--pretty big school FWIW), kids who played soccer just in general weren't really the types who would be able to make the football or basketball team even if they wanted to. Those sports just kind of have different types of athletes.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||what is club soccer at the high school level?||
Is that different from the school's team? Or does the school not have a team?
|3 weeks 4 days ago||lol||
yeah there's some meta unnecessary racism in that post for sure.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||not trying to offend||
just curious, what is your basis for the "he will not have brain damage" statement?
I mean, to me, the problem is that...kids have been doing youth football for 100 years and we never really have talked about long-term related brain damage before. Is that because we didn't know the connection, or is there really not one and all this attention is truly media-driven "hysteria?"
|3 weeks 4 days ago||no I'm saying||
If you looked at film of a game 100 years ago and then one from today, you wouldn't be thinking: jeez why do players not hit as hard today? you'd be thinking, jeez they never used to throw the ball back then.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||This is from the article:||
"The statistics, which have not been previously disclosed, are consistent with declining participation rates reported in youth football across the country. USA Football, a national governing body partially funded by the NFL, said participation among players ages 6 to 14 fell from 3 million to 2.8 million in 2011, a 6.7 percent decline."
|3 weeks 4 days ago||I'm still very torn||
It's complicated because youth football has it's own set of moral complications completely isolated from the moral issues facing the NFL. At neither level do I think it's a black and white issue, where black is "they know the risks, let them sign a waiver and stfu," and white is "let's make all these rule changes and hope that the game is still watchable."
My problem is I have no suggestions, so I'm stuck at the contrarian stage.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||true, football doesn't look like it did 100 years ago||
But lots of those changes have to do with evolving strategy. I think that the rise of the passing game predates the various player safety rule changes. It has more to do with other rule changes that made it harder to play pass coverage.
The last decade has seen massive changes, however, due to player safety rules that are unrelated to changes in shceme, etc. Back as recently as the early 2000s even, there were still numerous defenses that dominated the game, and we had TV segments like ESPN's "Jacked Up." That would never fly today.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Haha that's awesome||
You sound like a boss
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Lol||

|3 weeks 5 days ago||Exactly||
This is a perfectly answer to give in response to "how do you feel about the playcalling:" Well, uh ya know, I guess we've been hitting our head against the wall calling plays that I just haven't coached well enough to have success--And that's on me for being too stubborn to adapt to what our offense has shown it can and can't do.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Is that Massey projection||
Based of our current squad or where they project us to be later in the season?
|3 weeks 6 days ago||I support boycotting season tickets||
in the sense that it's the fans only real source of power in displaying their disapproval of unchecked ticket price increases.
i don't necessarily agree with any notion that boycotting season tickets shows a demonstration that you are not satisfied with the AD's performance in hiring coaches or the coaches' performance, or etc.
i do support the notion that this team is boring to watch, and has a high likelihood of being boring to watch next year, and paying ridiculous prices to watch a boring team play makes as much sense as running power into 8 defenders in the box.
i don't think that is being a fair weather fan, either. i went to every game while in college, and my freshman year coincided with RR's first year. the team sucked, and it sucked kinda, but we weren't boring to watch. denard made every game tolerable--there was something worth watching. this team is literally the most boring team i've ever watched. i still watch them and get depressed and etc. but i don't think you're a fair weather fan if you don't want to spend the money--even if it's not an issue of being outpriced by rising costs--to watch this team next year.

I find it hard to believe that a successful NFL franchise is chalked full of testosterone rage heads. I think the truth is, if you're hearing about rage monkeys, they're on a bad team, and they are contributing to the team's shittiness.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||My biggest problem with the whole situation||
In general, we as a society are way too quick to defend dbags and blame victims for "letting themselves" be abused by dbags. But, most of the time, these victims are marginalized members of society and there is literally no reasonable defense for bullying.
This NFL situation is so much different, however, because the NFL is such a different beast than the rest of society. Bullying is obviously not the same as typical rookie hazing that the author related, and I doubt you see this kind of bullying in the locker room of a good team. But, the nature of the game and everything the author says make it way less of a black and white decision of what to do.
My problem with all the attention that a story like this gets: it's a terrible forum to discuss the huge problem of bullying that plagues regular society. But media and news outlets and general population types will undoubtedly cite this example and try to fit it to decisions for other bullying. It's just a mess I tell ya.

that the real "discovery" and reason why this might stick as a separate structure is that they isolated a specific symptom--pivot problems--related to injury of the structure?
i.e., the reason that it is worth being differentiated as a new structure is that damage to it has functional significance.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||Further early/wildly speculative thoughts on defense||
I was super high on Irvin going into the season, and after seeing him out there yesterday, I'm still sold on his defensive presence. He looks like a manchild out there, and he's simply huge. I believe he will find more minutes than a lot of people expect simply because he will be our best option to lock down teams' premier wing players.
With Stauskas, I dunno, he still seems a little slow on defense. He looks a lot sturdier, and he is playing quicker on offense, but his defense still seems a little hesitant. He definitely has the physical tools to be a solid defender, but if he remains a bit of a liability this year, I wouldn't be surprised.
GR3, it seems like he should be an all star defender. He has athleticism for days and looks bulkier out there. At the same time, I'm not sure how much he practices defending bigs/wings, so that may limit his development. Again, can't really base anything off of 1 performance against a random D2 player who decided to go all-world out there. I just hope GR3 can crash the boards a little harder than he did last year, but I expect a couple very frustrating games this year where we run him at the 4 and get abused on the boards.
The bigs minus McGary, it doesn't look like they've added much to their game. Morgan will give you sound defensive positioning, etc., but he's not big enough to be a game-changing presence. Horford will give you some big plays, but he's not very consistent and will also make some bone-headed mistakes.
Finally, LeVert. He seems to always be in position on D, but he also seems to get eye busted more than any player on the team. I agree in theory that he will pose a problem for guards, but I don't think he has that lock-down defender capability. This analgoy is pretty messy, but to me, LeVert is going to be the Dennis Norfleet of the defense. He'll seem like he's always going to make a big play/develop into a star defender, but in the end, he'll just be a half-step too late.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||Good showing from the Warriors||
I bet we beat a couple Big Ten teams by way more than we did against the Warriors.
That said, an obvious troll is obvious point is that we really need McGary back and healthy. Morgan and Horford look like the same players they've been their entire careers. Morgan has stone hands, and Horford gets great position but then makes silly little mistakes on defense. Max looked small and ineffective on D in the few minutes he logged.
On offense, Levert looks like a new person out there. He no longer looks like a fledgling bird on drives, and he flashed some good court vision on a couple dimes. Walton looks like he'll be a solid distributor, but he didn't necessarily show signs that he'll create much for himself. The offense did seem a little too iso-dependent, but I think we may finally see a team Beilein has dreamed where you drive and kick and any person who catches is it can shoot.
In summary, I like the pieces on our team, we just gotta go through the typical gelling process and I think we'll be golden.

If we're going the city of Detroit, then it's Megatron no question. If we're going "greater Detroit area," then I think it may be Miggy, though the fact that he doesn't speak fluent English definitely limits his popularity. If he spoke more fluently, he would be the face of baseball no doubt.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||I know this is a thread for pure speculation||
but it's hard to speculate minute allocations when we have no clue when mcgary will be back. if he's gone long-term, then you're gonna see a little more of max. if he comes back soon, then he's gonna be playing 20-30 minutes (depending on how healthy he is) and that will change everyone else's minutes.

rock paper scissors is largely luck. is Brian trying to explain what plays in the game were bad/good luck? or is a positive RPS play trying to say that, when we were on defense, we could tell what they were going to do, and did a good job of calling the correct play to defend it?

be with my children when they first hear swear words than have them off at school or with friends when they learn them. parent intervention early on goes a long way towards preventing children from developing into annoying brats who swear because they think it's cool and grow up to be college kids who think they're cool for saying meaningless dribble
|6 weeks 3 days ago||agreed||
if you people stop believing that meaningless words are hurtful, and stop teaching their children that these meaningless words are hurtful, then maybe people will stop thinking they are cool and edgy. And maybe people will begin to understand that the word shit isn't hurting anyone, but the word faggot is actually hurtful. You can't change society by yourself, but you're certianly not going to instigate change by staying complicit with the status quo.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||that's why i said "things that need to stop mattering"||
granted, i was saying it in a facetious way, but i still stand by my argument.
also, i disagree with your last point. society is not some unchangeable object, it is what we make it.
people these days seem to grasp at straws to find ways to be truly offensive and hurtful to others without shame or guilt. demonizing swear words that are harmless and meaningless semantics is a good way for people to mask truly hateful language, as the two are often conflated to be the same thing.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||yeah you're right||
i can comprehend why they are offended--there a many, but mainly just b/c we are raised to think they are offensive. and there are lots of things i don't agree with that many people believe in simply because they were raised a certain way. so, yeah, i should defintely say i comprehend why they feel that way.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||perhaps i'm the dumb one of the idiotic masses||
but, things i find easy to comprehend: a black person being offended by a racial slur. or a gay person being offended by a homophobic slur. or a random person being offended by a person using a slur that other people would find offensive (it's called empathy).
things i find hard to comprehend: any human being offended by the words fuck or shit.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||things that need to stop mattering immediately:||
i literally cannot comprehend how a person can be offended by a swear word.
now, i understand why people conflate swear words with derrogatory homophobic and racial slurs: the masses are dumb and don't pick up on even the most subtle nuance.
but being offended by swear words in a vacuum...i just don't get it.
