Sadly you're probably right. |
| 6 days 23 hours ago | I don't buy that. |
Scholarship pulled because a dude put rap videos online? That doesn't make any sense, and if it is true, I think it is an excuse to get rid of a guy they may have regretted offering in the first place. That is a "son, you need to remove the videos and run stadium steps" kind of offense, not a scholarship removal. |
| 1 week 3 hours ago | Dante Booker. |
Dude has an offer, but I haven't seen anything about this guy. I'm assuming he is a Buckeye lock and/or hasn't shown much interest? Thought it was relevant given that he is a 6'3" linebacker out of Ohio, and it seems like a guy the coaches would be pushing hard for. |
| 1 week 4 days ago | I keed... I keed. |
I admittedly took one look at the dude, and stuck him at WDE in this scenario. I could be wrong, since I know nothing about watching film, but he seemed like he had a long ways to go to get big enough for the SDE spot. Who knows though... Frank Clark is now 275 lbs. |
| 1 week 4 days ago | This can work just fine. |
Lawrence Marshall - WDE (Take THAT, Magnus) DeShawn Hand - SDE Malik McDowell - 3T DT (dude is almost 300 lbs) Bryan Mone - NT Not only does this work out just fine as listed, Hand, McDowell and Mone offer enough individual versatility that they could rotate positions and offer a lot of different looks. Taking 4 DL in a small class might be a bit excessive but whateva. |

Ugh. Time is a bitch, man. |
| 2 weeks 8 hours ago | It very well could be. |
All I'm saying is that the decision should be with the player, not the coaches. I don't think there is anything wrong with saying "Hey, kid. We just don't think you've got the ability to ever play meaningful snaps here. You're welcome to stay on the team for the full four years, but if you want playing time your best option might be to transfer." |
| 2 weeks 22 hours ago | I apologize in advance for my language. |
...but FUCK yeah. The Wings dominated all of overtime, and to come away with a loss here would have been the end of it. |
| 2 weeks 23 hours ago | Yeah I agree on this 100% |
It's gotta go both ways for sure. It baffles me as to why it doesn't. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | This. |
You said it better than I could have. It gives coaches a lot more leeway to recruit guys that might be academic or criminal risks as well. Trust your scouting, and if you end up with a guy who wasn't as good as you thought, tough cookies. That's the risk in amateur sports. Now, if you want to give these kids a salary, the whole ballgame changes. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | There is another element to this too. |
If a coaches were allowed to do the above, they should not get a reprieve from the scholarship cap. So, if they don't want the kid to suit up, fine, but his scholarship will continue to count against the cap. In this case, there really wouldn't be any downside to keeping the player on the team. I think there should be exceptions made in cases where a kid is injured to the point where playing football is clearly medically unsafe or not physically possible, but not for guys who just won't be good enough to start. Otherwise I think it offers too great of an incentive to kick a kid off the team. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | I mean, to each his own. |
But I totally disagree with you here. If the doctors clear a guy to play, even if the player is likely not going to be 100% afterward, the school should be required to honor the scholarship and allow the player to remain on the team if the player wishes to do so. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | Exactly. |
Many others above mentioned more or less the same thing, but yes, this is what I was getting at. This may or may not even be relevant, since we don't know whether or not Ringer was even offered a medical hardship. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | ... |
While you are correct that I did only have one data point, I also did not try to make any sweeping accusations of widespread oversigning with this data point either. I am a random dude on the internet, and therefore I do not have any insider information pertaining to the situation that would suggest wrongdoing. But that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be discussed, even if it ends up simply being an exercise in reaffirming that there is nothing to see here. At the very least, the arguments below provide a handy list of reasons why this is a legitimate situation for those who may have cocked a suspicious eyebrow at this story. I would argue that this is meaningful discussion. And for the record, I am with you and the others that this situation is 99.9% likely to be legitimate. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | All of the above posters raise good points. |
And, as mentioned above in response to CRex, the primary purpose of this post was to foster a discussion about oversigning in general. It is no secret that Brian is a very vocal in his opposition to oversigning, as is the rest of the fanbase. As such, I think it's important to discuss situations like this one, and to make a clear distinction between what happened here versus the rampant oversigning that goes on in the SEC. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | Fair enough. |
Many of those things may very well be true, and are probably likely. But, it is a valid topic to at least address if we as a fanbase are going to ride upon the high horse of oversigning immorality. My tone was not intended to be accusatory, but rather to foster discussion about why this is different as opposed to just ignoring it. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | hmm... |
In my mind, a medical hardship was designed for a player who is injured to the point that playing football again would be medically unsafe... NOT for a player who may have lost a step or two, but would otherwise still be "safe" to play. When I see players offered medical hardships going to play at other places, even if it is at a lower level of competition, that strikes me as an oversigning red flag. Should I be thinking otherwise? |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | Ok, this is probably going to get firebombed. |
What is the difference between what just happened, and oversigning? Clearly the Michigan roster had one too many scholarship players, and as such Michigan was obligated to shed one scholarship before summer practices. At face value, that fits the definition of oversigning, although obviously not to the extreme that other schools (ahemSECahem) take it to. Clearly, we don't know many details about the situation, and it's entirely possible that coaches and Ringer both knew about this pending transfer long ago... and it very well could be mutual. Still, I just... feel a little dirty about it. Thoughts? |

| 2 weeks 6 days ago | So... |
I mean... I get the not going public about it thing... but I can't get outraged by this. Why should the school pay for an extra semester of summer classes when the guy is planning on transferring to play for another team the following semester? |

As my username would imply, I live in the beautiful city of Lubbock, TX, where it is currently in the upper 80's outside. On Saturday, about 45 minutes before tipoff, I realized that I did not own any suitable warm weather Michigan gear. So, I frantically drove to the mall hoping to find a Hatworld or equivalent that just might have a Michigan hat. I was not optimistic. But, I somehow managed to maneuver my way into a prime parking space at the mall, at a time when the mall here is a complete shitshow. I walked in, and the hat store, by sheer dumb luck, was right next to the entrance I parked at. As I scanned the racks for a hat, my heart sank as I did not see any Michigan paraphernalia anywhere. As a last ditch effort, I asked the sales associate if he might have one in the back. He then reached behind the counter, and pulled out a single, fitted Michigan hat that fit me perfectly. It was the last one, was on sale previously and was likely going to be shipped back to whatever warehouse it came from. I wore this hat during the game Saturday, and I plan to wear it during every game from here on out. |

It is so frustrating when every moderately impressive storm is dubbed a HUGE RECORD EVENT... when really it just flat-out isn't. The weather channel naming winter storms doesnt help, either. There is no reason to send the entire public into a panic for every winter storm of the season, because when it turns out that it really isn't as bad as the media says it is, people don't pay attention the next time around when it actually is a big deal. For some reason, weather is a chic thing to talk about these days, and apparently draws ratings. It's good in one sense that people are interested in and paying attention to weather, but this is an unfortunate side-effect. /meteorologistrant |

| 12 weeks 5 days ago | I guess we're splitting hairs now. |
I am not sold on Kugler coming in and being ready to play right away, not only because he probably isn't physically ready as a true freshman OL, but because he is switching positions himself. The coaches may have brought him in as a center, but he didn't play much of it in high school. Given that Kalis has a year in the weightroom, and that both players will likely face similar learning curves switching positions, I'd give the nod to Kalis by the slimmest of margins if Miller isn't ready. |
| 12 weeks 5 days ago | Why? |
Is bowl season the Time To Make Position Changes? It could be that moving Kalis to center is necessary due to a lack of depth... which wasn't an issue during the bowl season. Barnum and Mealer are now gone, so we're now left with an undersized Miller, a true freshman and maybe a former walk-on. Maybe coaches re-evaluated, thought "who are our best 5 OL," and decided to give Kalis a look there. Not out of the question. |
| 12 weeks 5 days ago | Very true. |
None of us really know how well Kalis would be there, and Miller definitely has the experience advantage. On the other hand, It could be that since Michigan had non-freshman bodies at center last season, albeit not very good ones, coaches didn't really give Kalis an extended look there. Now that the depth there is thinner, he may get a longer look. |
| 12 weeks 5 days ago | Why is this so outrageous? |
Kalis can probably play every single position on the line, and is potentially a big upgrade over Miller who has had a lot of struggles getting himself physically ready. Does it really matter that much if Kalis ends up moving over one spot when Kugler is ready to go? |
| 12 weeks 5 days ago | I'm not so sure if I agree about Kalis. |
I would agree that, long-term, putting Kalis at center is probably a waste. But, in the short term, assuming he can pick up the mental aspects of the position, I don't think putting him at center for one season while Kugler gets himself ready is a terrible idea. I don't think anyone would bat an eye at the conclusion that Kalis is most likely a better offensive lineman than Miller, and that Kalis has a big size advantage. Plus, would it really set Kalis that far back to switch to guard after one season, with 3 more years of eligibility left? I think the five OL that the OP listed are most likely the best on the team, and unless there is some reason why Kalis just can't pick up the center spot, the OP's lineup is a good one. Certainly not deserving of all the HALOL criticism it is currently garnering. |
| 12 weeks 5 days ago | Not surprising. |
Among all of our coaches, he definitely is the one that best fits the "young rising star" mold. He has had success both coaching kids up and recruiting, and we should expect to see him get offers. I hope Brandon offers him a raise to keep him, because I think his recruiting ability is very important to the team. |
| 12 weeks 6 days ago | Hmm. |

| 13 weeks 4 days ago | Well... |
For one, it broke into a billion pieces when it got close to the surface, so there probably wasn't a dramatic impact anywhere. And, this thing was moving at 18 miles per second. | 15 weeks 5 days ago | Sigh. |
I wish I could downvote myself for my apostrophe error. But I am in the "find an elite QB first, find a project later" camp. I think it would be wise to take a late flier on a guy who whose profile wouldn't necessarily be threatening to an elite QB looking over the depth chart... but who has enough talent to provide some depth and meaningful competition. Surely Purdue will have somebody locked up by then that we can steal. |

I actually think the Pistons have a pretty good core of young talent to build around, but Dumars has to finish part two of this move or he's gotta go. The guy brought a lot to the organization, but you can't get rid of good players to free up cap space and use it to sign mediocre ones. |

I'm just as excited about Derrick Green as the next guy, but I don't think there is a meaningful talent gap between him and Deveon Smith. I'm no high falutin' football tape analyzin' dude, but I have a really hard time comparing tape from the two backs and definitively concluding that Green is by far the better back, as most scouts have. I know Green supposedly has another gear, but to me they both look like power backs that lack a little bit of extra oomf to outrun people in the secondary. I really think both will see extended playing time, and it will be nice to be able to bring the thunder and then counter-balance that with... more, less tired thunder. |

Think about this hypothetical scenario for a minute. It will require going deep into fairytale land, because it will never happen ever ever, but allow yourself to momentarily indulge in the awesomeness that would occur if this happened. Michigan has enough scholarships available for every single non-senior to return next season, in addition to the three incoming freshman. Say Trey Burke decides that the NBA can wait. If you do not look like Homer Simpson after stumbling upon a mountain of Hot and Fresh Krispy Kreme doughnuts right now, something is seriously wrong with you. |

I don't think he's as nuts as you think. Manny put up points and got boards but he was very inconsistent and inefficient. You might be able to make a case for starting him over Hardaway, especially last year's version, but I don't think I would given his improved shooting. Plus, if you start him for Stauskas you lose that deadly outside threat. I think he would come off the bench. As for Sims, you might be able to make a case for starting him at the 5, but that's quite a logjam and its not his natural spot. Or, you start him over GR3, which might not be a bad move, but I don't think it's necessarily that cut and dry. It would be real nice, though, to have any of the above options.

| 19 weeks 1 day ago | This is dissapointing. |
I really wanted somebody to attempt the spread 'n shred in the NFL, just to see if it could work. |
| 19 weeks 2 days ago | Do not dispair. |
For your efforts will not be forgotten. I hereby award you three Mad Respeck points. The other guy gets four, but, I mean, yeah. |
| 19 weeks 4 days ago | Meh. |
Whatever. |

| 19 weeks 5 days ago | Bacari Alexander. |
If he wasn't a basketball coach, I bet he would make an incredible elemetary school assembly speaker. I lost it when he tossed the scraps and walked out of the locker room. |
| 19 weeks 5 days ago | Stauskas missed a 3. |
THE MAYANS WERE RIGHT |
| 20 weeks 2 days ago | Hah. |
How many billionaires do you think there are in Detroit these days? If that team gets sold, it's going to Los Angeles. |
| 20 weeks 2 days ago | Neither. |
Your/You're. I am trying really hard not to break my keyboard as I finish this sentence. |
| 20 weeks 5 days ago | Cafe Habana. |
I did NYE there in 2010 or 2011...can't quite remember. Anyway, it was pretty decent, but you needed to buy a ticket in advance. I would do some research, since there are a good number of places that require advance tickets these days. |
| 20 weeks 6 days ago | Agreed. |
Sort of funny story. Last night I bought a ticket for Django, and mistakenly stood in the line for Les Mis for about 10 minutes before I realized it was the wrong line. Thank Jesus I asked somebody if I was in the correct line, because that would have been an unwelcome surprise once I walked in the theater. |
| 20 weeks 6 days ago | My favorite part of the last video. |
Was the Women's Volleyball casually sipping on an adult beverage on camera. I wonder how many sheets to the wind whe was at that point. I'm guessing about 1.5 sheets. |
| 21 weeks 1 day ago | Man. |
I sure do wish that guy was on my team. WAIT HE IS HAHAHAHA /faint |
| 21 weeks 2 days ago | Ugh. |
I'm really looking forward to watching another once in a generation talent waste away with the Lions. Five bucks says he retires after 9 seasons because the Lions have robbed him of his competitive drive. Wow, that was emo. |
| 21 weeks 3 days ago | Well... |
He kind of did. Went 5-2 from there on out with 14 TDs and 3 INTs. I could tell he was better even though I was about eight years old. I still remember him getting sacked at the end of that playoff game against the Packers... although that doesn't exactly help my point. |
| 21 weeks 4 days ago | Missed opportunity. |
That picture would have been much better with Coach K photoshopped on Truman's face. MGoPhotoshoppers... assemble! |
| 21 weeks 5 days ago | Meh. |
I'm in the "win by 30" camp. They could use a good ol' fashioned shellacking. |
| 22 weeks 6 days ago | As a Tech alum... |
Cinci. Definitely Cinci. |
| 22 weeks 6 days ago | Nope. |
28. I iz good at teh maths. |
| 22 weeks 6 days ago | Yawn. |
Booorrriiinnnng. I really wish we sucked more so this game would have been more interesting. Beating helpless teams to a pulp just isn't fun anymore. /deliriouslaughter |
| 23 weeks 5 hours ago | Interesting. |
I can see the theory behind this, but unless a player has an obviously high number over a long period of time, it seems that there are so many other factors involved to really put much stock in it. But, assists are completely dependent on the receiving player to make the shot too, and that's a pretty universally accepted stat. It will be interesting to see where this goes, and it would be interesting to see these numbers calculated for M opponents (or everyone) so we have a frame of reference. |
| 23 weeks 2 days ago | This. |
The administration at Tech is an embarrassment, Lubbock pretty much sucks, and Tech fans wanted him gone. He was going to take any job he could that would get him out of here, and I don't blame him in the slightest. |
| 23 weeks 3 days ago | woah. |
Don't bring Escanaba into this. Lubbock is far worse. As a current resident of Lubbock, I get it Tubbs. |
| 23 weeks 3 days ago | How about... |
Burrito Britches. Has a nice alliterative ring to it. |
| 23 weeks 6 days ago | ... |
Not unless he can play CB. Or offensive tackle. |
| 24 weeks 5 hours ago | ... |
I think the real question now is how on earth is John Gruden going to coach Wisconsin and Tennessee at the same time. |
| 24 weeks 1 day ago | TELL IT TO THE PEOPLE |
TELL IT TO THE PEOPLE |
| 24 weeks 1 day ago | I disagree. |
He shouldn't have to be "dominant enough to be the first freshman." The award winner should have to be "dominant enough to have the best season of any other player in the country," freshman or not. In my opinion, he did just that. |
| 24 weeks 1 day ago | Johnny Manziel |
And in my opinion, it isn't close. He had a phenomenal season, and frankly I don't get the lukewarm reaction that many people have about him. If he doesn't win, its because A) he is a freshman, and B) he is a freshman. And that is really dumb. |
| 24 weeks 1 day ago | Ehh. |
I don't think #2 is valid here. Every analyst close to Michigan recruiting has been adament that coaches are taking 5 offensive lineman and no more. If anything this might be a negative indicator of where the coaches think we stand with our other offerees, Dawson included. If Finley commits to Michigan, that means no Dawson or anyone else for that matter. |
| 24 weeks 4 days ago | Come on now. |
This is ridiculous. Do all commissioners grow up asipiring to be this guy?
|
| 24 weeks 6 days ago | Yeah. |
Pretty sure that at this point, Nik can like any kind of music he damn well pleases. |
| 25 weeks 1 day ago | I know we're good and all... |
but are we really the third best team in the country? I may be a cantankerous mid 20s alum who has been beaten down by a decade of crap to mediocre basketball... but even trying to put that aside I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around it. Do you guys really believe that ranking? I want to believe. MAKE ME BELIEVE MGOBLOG. |
| 25 weeks 5 days ago | so... |
I know this game is on national tv and all... but does anyone have a stream? No tv. : ( |
| 25 weeks 6 days ago | Man. |
Do you guys remember how good Miami was in 2000/2001/2002? Or the fact that they won 34 consecutive games in that stretch? Remember how many current NFL players were on that roster? Despite all the ridiculous stuff that has gone on in that program, it's hard to believe that they could fall so far. |
| 25 weeks 6 days ago | Nice. |
These shoes >>>>>>>>>>>>> neon green shoes. |
| 26 weeks 1 day ago | It probably does. |
Especially when you factor in all of the nonrevenue sports. They can probably get away with bussing their kids to most of the MWC campuses, but probably not in the Big East. And, if the monetary incentives are now essentially equal in both conferences, assuming the Big East even survives, staying there to play against teams that you have no rivalries or historical ties with makes no sense. |
| 26 weeks 1 day ago | Guh. |
I hate this scenario, but I think Gardner starts at QB, Denard at RB. Frankly it seems to be the most effective way to get both athletes on the field at the same time. |
| 26 weeks 1 day ago | Beat Ohio. |
And to make sure that game never happens, please Iowa, beat Nebraska. |
| 26 weeks 1 day ago | Well, in all fairness... |
I mean... I'd say the dude is doing pretty well for himself. |
| 26 weeks 1 day ago | No. |
No. No? No. |
| 26 weeks 3 days ago | You sir... |
are a glass half full kind of person. I just don't see it. |
| 26 weeks 3 days ago | Yeah... but you've got to squint pretty hard. |
That could very well be true, but I don't think it's worth it. The rest of the Big 10 won't suck this bad forever, and I have a hard time seeing Rutgers being relevant in the long run. |
| 26 weeks 3 days ago | Rutgers too. |
WTF? Maryland at least brings basketball. Rutgers brings nothing to the table... and don't even pretend that they are a ticket to the New York market. Nobody gives a flying fuck about Rutgers in NYC. |
| 26 weeks 3 days ago | Just when I think Borges cant gt any dumber... |
He goes and TOTALLY REDEEMS HIMSELF! |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | Fair enough. |
That bathroom is sacred and must be protected from outsiders. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | david from wyoming... |
steals lunch money from kids on their way to school. And he doesn't even feel bad about it, either. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | In the regular season... |
we are averaging a cool 35 point margin of victory... today being our closest game yet at 30. If you want to include exhibitions, that number moves to 33.8. There is only one thing we can conclude from this evidence. We play down to our competition. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | I am convinced now. |
Our athletes are way cooler than other team's athletes. It is a proven fact. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | Umm... |
Poor timing for a play breakdown. |
| 27 weeks 8 min ago | LOL. |
This is just ridiculous. |
| 27 weeks 33 min ago | Bacari. |
Something tells me that a deep run in the tournament will land Bacari Alexander a head coaching job. What a sad, sad day that will be. |
| 27 weeks 40 min ago | Ugh. You HAD to bring up the Pistons. |
They make me depressed. |
| 27 weeks 42 min ago | This is going well. |
Me likey. |
| 27 weeks 53 min ago | I've watched that Gangnam .gif like 100 times. |
And I can't stop laughing at it. Well played. |
| 27 weeks 21 hours ago | This needs to be frontaged. |
Ace. Recap. STAT. |
| 27 weeks 22 hours ago | McGary. |
This is the same dude that BROKE A BACKBOARD. Finger-roll layup? C'mon man!
|
| 27 weeks 2 days ago | Second. |
See Air Force. It seems the option is Mattison's achilles heel. |
| 27 weeks 2 days ago | I am no coach... |
but that defensive alignment seemed like a straight up dare from Mattison. It's almost like he was trying to force the offense into handing off to the dive back by giving them a look they couldn't pass up... then LOL Demens. |
| 27 weeks 3 days ago | Texas A&M |
They have to be the surprise team of the year. For essentially their entire existence, they have been also-rans in the Big 12, with fans who think they're God's gift to college football. I thought that they would get steamrolled in the SEC their first few years. Hell, I didn't expect them to walk into Tuscaloossa and leave with most of their body parts... let alone a W. Not bad. |
| 27 weeks 3 days ago | beets |
beets |
| 27 weeks 3 days ago | Nice. |
Thanks. |
| 27 weeks 3 days ago | Question. |
Since I'm too lazy to research it myself... does anyone know when we last scored 100 pts? |
| 27 weeks 3 days ago | Horford. |
Horford looks pretty solid so far. |
| 27 weeks 4 days ago | PANIC |
AIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Northwestern has a player named Chi Chi Ariguzo? Jeallloouuussss |

Aww, hell. 102-49 |
| 27 weeks 5 days ago | Hmm... |
While she is still fast relative to the boys she is playing against, this footage was pretty obviously sped up. Regardless...the girl can play. I wonder how much longer she will be able to keep it up. |

I want moar awkward closeups of the sideline reporter. |
| 28 weeks 5 days ago | General question... |
If any of the freshman play in this game, could they hypothetically preserve their redshirts since it is an exhibition? coughcoughalbrechtlevertcoughcough. <----- !! subtle coughing technique which cleverly disguises a hidden message !! |
| 29 weeks 1 day ago | er. Mah. GERD. |
