|18 weeks 2 days ago||As I read it||
As I read it the court invalidated a rule which would otherwise be somewhat redundant. Nobody is allowed to have sex with minors below the age of consent. The law that was invalidated said that police officers couldn't have sex with minors... which they already weren't allowed to do because of the first law.
Effectively what it means, as I've read it, is that if another 35 year old officer has sex with another 14 year old he/she would be charged with statutory rape, but that it wouldn't be enhanced by the fact that he/she is a police officer.
"In Ohio, it is illegal for anyone over the age of 18 to have sex with someone under the age of 16. For people in professions with frequent interactions with children, like teachers, coaches and clergy, having sex with a minor is considered sexual battery, a third-degree felony. A 2007 law added law enforcement officers to this list" via http://www.cleveland19.com/story/32572134/matthew-mole-supreme-court

I think all that comes of this is Emmert calling Harbaugh unethical while simultaneously praising the ethical and responsible actions of the SEC. He'll continue this narrative of "not against the rules =/= OK" despite the fact that that's exactly what it means, and sidestep the real issues he should be addressing because doing so would mean potentially impeding the SEC's ability to win games at all costs.
that said, the effect changing these rules would have on other sports will stop him from moving forward with it I think

Peyton Manning is a popular figure and, especially in light of the Manning v. Brady rivalry, its an interesting topic that's worth discussing. Furthermore it can easily be discussed without venturing into devisive political discussions.

|1 year 1 week ago||I could see them being offered the #2 jersey next season||
I could see Lewis or Peppers being offered the #2 jersey next season. But while Lewis had started to prove himself to be an amazing cover corner last season, neither plaer had really stepped forward and made a decisive case for it until this year (in all fairness though, Peppers was injured for effectively all of last season), and I doubt the staff would offer a kid a new number midway through the season.
|1 year 1 week ago||At any rate, I don't think the patch was necessary||
If there were no patches the legends jerseys wouldn't be specifically tied to one player, so, for example if UM were to have an amazing QB who wore the #11 jersey, that legends jersey wouldn't merely symbolize the Wistert bros, but that QB as well, thus allowing future players to "build their own legends" albeit in the jersey of a former player.
Alternatively if the jerseys included patches which said "Michigan Legend" or something like that It would accomplish the same goal. I am not a fan of retiring jerseys or putting Michigan players names on the stadium, and I wasn't a fan of the names being on the patches. Michigan is not about individuals, no matter how great, it's about the team. The Team, The Team, The Team.
|1 year 1 week ago||Yeah, started about the same time as the legend jerseys||
I think it was Hoke's idea, but I could be wrong. Basically they said, Vincent Smith would be the last non-DB to wear #2, and then it would go to a really really good DB. Which is why they gave it to Countess after his best season.

I'm fully aware that the standards are different than those within the legal system, within that policy there is room for exactly the response outlined above. Suspend the guy from university grounds and functions until such time as he's proven to be guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
You can still work within the universities standards without jumping to expulsion immediately.
"Students, faculty and staff found to be in violation of this policy will be subject to discipline up to and including termination, expulsion or other appropriate institutional sanctions; affiliates and program participants may be removed from University programs and/or prevented from returning to campus."
It looks, however that in this case the student in question removed himself from the university making the argument moot with regards to this specific case. Had this been the actions of Stanford I would argue that the previously suggested response (suspend him then expell him pending a preponderance of evidence) is a far more appropriate response.
Imagine a scenario wherein someone is falsely accused of rape; the standard response would be immediate expulsion without allowing due process.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||ok, so then he gets suspended||
Pending a trial where he ends up being found guilty. If he was caught red handed there ought to be enough evidence to prove his guilt and he would then be expelled- but after due process. That's how this is supposed to work.

|1 year 47 weeks ago||Wilson played one year in a pro system||
Wilson played one year in a pro system. Mariota has a great arm, sure it's not the cannon Kaepernick has as the knock on Mariota is his deep ball accuracy, but he's far and away the most intelligent QB in this draft as well as the more athletic of the two QBs (Winston and Mariota).
As far as the system goes, most NFL teams run variants of the West Coast offense, a system not entirely dissimilar from the up tempo spread offense at Oregon. Most of the throws he'd make wouldn't be 30 yard fade routes, in fact that just doesnt happen all that often anyway.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||Mariota is significantly more impressive||
than Dixon, Thomas, or Masoli; Dixon had a good completion percentage but never threw for more than 2,200yds, Masoli was 5'11'', never threw for better than 58% or 2,200yds.
Thomas has the most comparable season in 2011 (62.2% completion, 2,761yds 33:7 TD:INT), and even that is dwarfed by Mariota's stats each year;
2012: 68.5%, 2,677yds, 32:6 TD:INT
2013: 63.5%, 3,665yds, 31:4
2014*: 68.6%, 4,121yds, 40:3
*and counting since they're in the National Title game on monday
That's just in the passing game; Mariota has rushed for over 700yds every year, none of the other typical Oregon QBs even hit 600yds except Masoli who was basically a glorified HB.
2012: 731yds, 5.8avg, 15TDs
2013: 715yds, 7.4avg, 9TDs
2014: 752yds, 7.1avg, 5TDs
Mariota has the smarts to make it in the NFL, He's a Russell Wilson type, only bigger (Wilson is 5'11, Mariota is 6'4'' and about 10lbs heavier right now).
|1 year 47 weeks ago||definitely the smarter pick||
Mariota is a beast and I think projects well... but I don't know if I trust Tampa's front office to make that decision. I feel like they get Winston and end up drafting another QB in two-three years.

He was in over his head and the result was a mediocre record, from what I've seen and heard (which granted isn't a whole lot) he's handled this whole situation in a pretty graceful way.
Lets not kid ourselves into thinking that Rich Rodriguez would've taken us to the sugar bowl let alone beat Virginia Tech in 2011. His defenses were embarassingly awful, no way we go 11-2 running a 3-3-5 in the B1G.
EDIT: someone also brought up Michigan's APR under Hoke which was rediculously high, another reason he should always be welcomed back like Moeller.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||That brings up an interesting thought||
I remember watching the Arizona Cardinals play a couple weeks ago and they were talking about the number of long term assistant coaches on staff, one of them having been a very talented assistant to various coaches for some like 40-50 years and the commentator made a point of saying something along the lines of "You don't see too many of them these days [long time assistant coaches] since every coach seems to be trying for a fast tract to a head coaching job. But that's not how it used to be"
This may be sort of a "duh" thing, but I'd be interested to see the correlation between the evolution of coaching salaries and the new "fast track" attitude towards coaching.

IIRC San Francisco wouldn't save any money by waiting because they'd only have to pay him the difference between his 49ers salary and whatever salary he earns next year. Since his salary at Michigan (while it may not be the 8mil/yr reported) would undoubtedly be higher than his current salary the 49ers wouldn't be out jack

The NFL being the most popular is a relatively new thing. As such it's much easier to rattle off a longer list of legendary college coaches than it is NFL coaches.

|1 year 50 weeks ago||true, but||
true, but no coach is going to get an offer close to that unless his name is Harbaugh. Harbaugh is a home run hire, he'll easily be the most highly sought after coach, we won't be offering NFL money to coaches for whome we aren't competing with NFL teams.

Even if he's made his decision and let both teams know why would they not continue throwing out smoke screens and non answers until the season is over? I know at this point and likely to a greater extent next week the 49ers chance at making the playoffs is looking slim, but even assuming they don't make it, why invite the added distraction of knowing the head coach already accepted another job?
Assuming he accepts the job (which for the above reasons we don't actually know if he already has or not) I don't see why we'd find out before the 49ers season ends on the 28th.

I like the letter. I have no issue with it being posted on social media because it was stated to be a letter to both the current team as well as the fans. The only critique I have is that the letter does seem to be blaming the attitude of the fans for the attitude of the players, and while there is some truth to that and we in the fan and alumni base do have our own share in the blame for the failure of the Rodriguez era it was not strictly on our shoulders, that is to say that those players who saw our hesitance and reacted by transferring out and not buying in did so of their own accord.
Having said that I believe that this letter needed to be written, and I'm not sure how aside from the use of social media one would go about getting this to circulate among the fan and alumni base. We as a fanbase do need to get behind the new coach regardless of who it is because that will inevitably effect the feelings and reactions of the players. Again they are still responsible for their own reactions and decisions in the transition, but a divided fanbase is going to be very hard to overcome.

I'm not seeing it anywhere else, so yeah... I have a hard time believing the thought behind it anyway.
1. We're in the middle of a slow deliberate search, hiring Schiano would smell more of a desperate quick trigger hire
2. We need a home-run hire given our last two flops
3. His record/resume is not very impressive
4. Harbaugh Harbaugh Harbaugh!

I've followed them for a while and because of this my immediate and lasting reaction to this idea is:
He'd be our Mike Riley hire (he's better than Riley, but still leaves me with a distinctive "eh" when you compare him to the other candidates).
He'd mean hiring a guy Les Miles' age, with a worse record, and much more baggage... no thanks.
