|3 days 16 hours ago||Hoke is an anchor that he will cut if necessary.||
I agree that he will cut Hoke loose if he deems it necessary, but I'm not sure how necessary he would think it is. I see Brandon making a few changes to try to appease the students and large donors at the cost of ordinary fans (these will be more changes in departmental policy, not coaching changes) I highly doubt that Schlissel says anything that tells him firing Hoke is necessary to keep his job, therefore I doubt its seen by Brandon as a necessity.
|3 days 17 hours ago||fair enough||
If that's the case it'll be interesting to see who he picks. The top candidates being Tyrone Willingham, Mark Mangino, and Eastern Washington's Offensive Coordinator.
On a serious note: Who wants to coach a team where your athletic director handles his staff like a paranoid despot.
|3 days 17 hours ago||This is common, for example||
Everyone knows E. Gordon Gee was the president at Ohio, but he was also the quarterbacks coach. Hence his fear that Jim Tressel would fire him.
|3 days 17 hours ago||If Brandon is kept on its moot||
Brandon will not fire Hoke. He hired him, and firing the guy you hired would show that you are not omniscient. He's already conceded his omnipotence (by giving in to pressures and lower student ticket prices, although likely at the expense of all other ticket buyers).
|3 days 17 hours ago||the students are the more visible group||
They have much more access to Schlissel. Why buy off regular fans? They're far less likely to get him fired; so why would he care about their opinions.
|3 days 17 hours ago||definitely a solid bet...||
I'd put it all on that happening... Maybe then I can afford to go to a Michigan football game
|5 days 3 hours ago||Here you go||
|1 week 3 days ago||1. I'm referring to the||
1. I'm referring to the players' and certain former players' perception of these actions; not to the overall perception nor how it is relayed in the media, national or otherwise.
2. Perhaps to some extent, but the fact that the president is even holding a forum means he realized at least that there is a big issue here. Brandon can go ahead and call the fans and students poor fans, he can go ahead and write snarky emails and take up as much time in the media as he wants because if you ask me having a mass of students, alumni, and fans tell Schlissel personally they want Brandon gone is immeasurably more important and effective than skipping the kickoff of a football game. Even if it is Michigan Football.
|1 week 3 days ago||who said anything about coercion?||
I'm talking about the athletes hearing from our athletic department that these actions are because we as fans don't support the team. The football players have expressed this, and its clear that regardless of whether or not they know the real reason we're upset the athletic department is attempting to paint this as fans and students just being wishy-washy and bad fans.
Alternatively, If you're referring to the line of student athletes that gave the football team a send off as they left for New Jersey I think that that was really cool and probably one of those cases where they would have done that if they'd thought of it, the fact that Dave Brandon came up with it just means that he has a good idea once every five years.
Edit: Got Dan autocorrects
|1 week 3 days ago||I know I'm going to be in the minority here||
But I agree with this. I understand the statement being made by not attending kickoff and I think it would difinitively get the point accross to the administration. However, as stated by several players and former players (perhaps because they've been listening to the Athletic Departments spin team too much) it will be seen by them as students and fans not supporting the team.
It's a difficult situation, with the fans attempting to show their distrust and anger at the athletic department and it's alienating policies, and the athletic department seeming successfully portraying those fans as fickle, whiney, and on a crusade to purge the deparrment of anyone associated withthe football team. As a result it seems clear, at least to me and based on player and former players statements, that the department has successfully passed off the idea that any protest by the students is related to team performance and not horrible policies; as such, actions that involve open criticism (booing) and not showing up are likely to be seen as not supporting the team.
I'm not supporting the athletic departments use of the athletes as human shields, I think it's despicable and is itself cause for review by the university and its administration. However that all having been said I think that there are other ways to get the point accross without allowing the department to spin it into the student body and fans not supporting the team. President Schlissel is holding an open forum which, while a less media covered venue, is I think a more appropriate way of voicing these concerns and issues. That along with vigilant emailing of the higher-ups is while less sexy a better way to catalyze change as it doesn't risk the team thinking we dont support them (at least not as much).

|2 weeks 3 days ago||I think this is a case||
of two sides who see two different halves of a whole picture. The student athletes see Brandon show up at practices, talk to the athletes, etc. They see that he cares for them and has a passion for Michigan, but they don't see his policies alienating fans, students and alumni... whereas the fans, students and alumni see just the opposite.
Does it make our opinions irrelevant because we don't see Dave Brandon working everyday? No, because we do see the results of said work, i.e. screwing over fans, students and alumni. Our opinion (nformed from our half of the picture) is no more irrelevant than his (being formed from the other half).
What it comes down to is does the bad outweigh the good with Brandon. Sure he interacts with the players and shows them that they're important to the university, but any competant Athletic Director can do that. He also drives those who pay for the athletic department through donations and merchandise purchases away. To me that outweighs the good, pretty heavily.

If he were 100% going to keep Brandon, he'd say so. As itstands there is a regents meeting comming up, and it will likely be discussed there. He can't exactly say Brandon is getting fired right now, not until after they've discussed it.
thefact that he hasn't said anything definitive about Dave Brandon is good news to me.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||exactly||
Regardless of the fact that it is the same email I like this response. It's a professional (looking at you Dave!), well written statement. He didn't have to respond at all, and frankly I wouldn't find it rude if he didn't. University President is already a busy enough job, especially at a place like Michigan, but then you throw in this whole mess and the fumbling of this whole mess, as well as a student body who is pissed of enough to rally about the fumbling of this whole mess and a bunch of reporters circling campus like sharks. He's got quite a bit on his plate.

That being said, I've never wanted to beat them as much as I do this year... To hell with Notre Dame

I'm not sure if it's an issue of issue of Notre Dame seeing a trend they don't like in terms of the rivalry (i.e. this is no longer the marquee game in the sense that if we beat Notre Dame it catapults us in the polls and we know we're going to have a good season) or if they just don't want to risk too many more games decided in the final minute figuring Lou Holtz probably can't take it, and he's the only ally they have in national media other than NBC.
Given the poll results I just don't understand the decision. Other than the obvious explaination of Notre Dame chickening out.

When I graduated high school my graduation present from my parents was a weekend in Ann Arbor. We went for fan day, which meant standing in line for hours to get autographs signed by the players. Anyway the line for special teams wasn't terrible but was still decently long, but the coaches rounded up the players just as I was getting to the end of the line... i missed out on all the signature except for his. He stayed until the coaches were really yelling at him just to make sure we didn't get in line for nothing. Of all the autographs I have from that day (including Brandon Graham) his was always my favorite because of that.
tl;dr - Mesko got yelled at by his coaches because he wanted to sign peoples autographs when they'd been standing in line for close to 45minutes.

"Tudesco said he and three friends got the fundraising idea after seeing a video that went viral of Tudesco holding his head in dismay during the Irish's 42-14 loss to Alabama in the national championship game on Jan. 7.
The goal was to turn the loss -- and the player's sudden popularity -- into something positive.
'I think we were all kind of disappointed in the result of the game ... and the Manti story was very inspirational,' Tudesco told The Associated Press on Thursday....Tudesco said he doesn't know Te'o personally and had no contact with him or Notre Dame before setting up the fundraiser. He said money raised by his fundraiser will be held in reserve by indiegogo and released directly to the charity at the end of the campaign." (ESPN)

not exactly surprised at it. I rather expected some of it: namely them claiming he's arrogant and pompous because he's from Ohio, but likes Michigan... mostly because they say that about everyone who happens to be from Ohio and isn't absolutely obsessed with OSU.
It's especially not surprising when you consider that this is the same fanbase that has been wishing ACL tears and placing voodoo hexes on Tom Stroble and Kyle Kalis.
Not really anything to back any of his statements up, he just believes Hoke is pompous because he has the audacity to want a Big Ten Title while not bleeding scarlet and gray... honestly that is probably one of the most hypocritical arguments I've ever heard. "You're arrogant because you said you're going to compete for the Big Ten Championship... only we get to do that!"
I wouldn't pay it much heed though, because at the end of the day they have nothing on Hoke. Calling him pompous is pretty baseless and hypocritical, calling him out because he is 48-51 as a head coach shows a lack of research as it doesn't take a genius to see that he led two dramatic turnarounds of two abysmal programs to get to 48-51. Which really only leaves them with fat jokes, which are a sign of desperation.

I wasn't happy with Rodriguez's treatment here or his dismissal, I really wasn't happy when we hired Brady Hoke, but he was so masterful in his introductory press conference - that did a lot to gain my confidence, the rest has come as a result of both our amazing recruiting class and the fact that Hoke is a bigger homer than me.
|3 years 11 weeks ago||Agreed||
I was always a huge RR supporter, but now that he's gone I wish him happy trails & I'll definitely root for wherever he ends up next. However that being said I've been 100% behind Hoke for a few months now (His intro conference was a huge step, but I didn't really get fully behind him until he landed us the best linebacker class in the country)
|3 years 11 weeks ago||My Favorite College Teams||
2. Missouri - I was born about 60 miles west of Columbia, MO
3. Navy - My Grandpa was in the Navy, My Dad was a Marine, My Brother is in the Navy, and I'm going into the Marines after I get my Bachelors
4. Florida St. - I have a lot of family in or around Tallahasse (sp?)
5. UCLA - I dunno why... probably because I hate USC almost as much as OSU
|3 years 11 weeks ago||True...||
but after we win the inaugural B1G championship this year, we'll probably see them in Dallas for the 2012 opener.
|3 years 11 weeks ago||Fickle||
don't even get me started on him...
|3 years 14 weeks ago||ditto||
I have a hard time enjoying OSU and MSU schadenfreude, because of all their rediculous assumtions and moronic comments. It's why I don't argue sports with OSU/MSU fans, and it's why I don't debate politics with people.
Case in point: I got into an argument with an OSU fan who was trying to argue that because Michigan's defense was terrible last year, our offense was too. No matter how many statistics or facts I gave him, he wouldn't accept it.
|3 years 14 weeks ago||Why could we not have 30 spots available?!||
Because we don't play in this conference:
And this guy isn't our head coach:

He was convinced of that exact thing... unfortunately for him he had, of course, an incredible innability to use logic or reason.

is an ESPN Documentary Film, but is not a 30 for 30... I think even without my obvious bias towards it that had it been a 30 for 30 I'd say it would be hands down the best.
|3 years 17 weeks ago||My Favorites||
1. Pony Exce$$ - The SMU scandal
2. The Best that Never Was - The Story of Marcus Dupree
3. Winning Time - Reggie Miller vs. the New York Knicks
4. Jordan Rides the Bus - Michael Jordan becomes a professional Baseball player
5. Run Ricky Run - Ricky Williams' journey
Although I have not seen all of them, or even most of them.

I think we go 2-1 against our rivals this year, I think we lose to Notre Dame, but beat both Lil' Bro and Ohio

|3 years 19 weeks ago||Obtuse!?||
NCAA: How can you be so Obtuse?
OSU: What? What did you call me?
NCAA: Obtuse. Is it deliberate?
OSU: Son, you're forgetting yourself
NCAA: The Auto Dealership will have the player's sales slips. Records, Pink slips with their names on them. Sir, if I ever get out, I'd never mention what happens here. I'd be just as indictable as you for laundering that money.
OSU: Don't you ever mention money to me again, you sorry son of a bitch! Not in this office, not anywhere! (slaps intercom)...Get in here! NOW!
NCAA: I was just trying to rest your mind at ease, that's all.
OSU: (as guards enter) Solitary! A month!

|3 years 20 weeks ago||Love the OSU game photos...||
my favorite away jersey, I wish we still wore them
EDIT: well now just the one with Braylon... I don't much care for the away jerseys in the other photo.
|3 years 20 weeks ago||I had hoped they would look something more like this||
|3 years 20 weeks ago||I get it||
first the striped jerseys with the block M in front, now the all yellow look... David Brandon is trying to regain the "element of surprise" and get back some of that "wow factor" that we lost when Brian Kelly decided to let the cat out fo the bag...
Brandon's just throwing us all off
Also: To hell with Notre Dame, and their douchebag coach!
|3 years 20 weeks ago||Well||
Nobody told Shane Morris or Matt Godin either
|3 years 20 weeks ago||The argument that they are free labor is invalid to me||
They end up averaging like $50,000-$60,000/year in scholarships. Players are already paid, they go to school for free.

What an incredibly thoughtful gift... I wonder what little brother got them?

|3 years 20 weeks ago||It's bad enough||
those morons in EL or CBus use the term Walmart Wolverine... Where the hell do you get off talking down to anyone because they may or may not have gone to university they root for? Stop being an arrogant pretentious ass.
And I'm so tired of people looking down people who attend/attended Junior College, what's so plebian about getting your Gen-Eds out of the way for half the price? I'd argue some Junior Colleges are better than some 4-year schools. Not that it matters, when you graduate from said 4-year school your degree doesn't say "BTW, attended Junior College for the first two years".
|3 years 21 weeks ago||Interesting theory||
It would be interesting to see it play out...
My belief, given Gee's comments about hoping Tressel doesn't fire him and their fan bases insistance that this isn't a big deal/Tressel didn't do anything wrong, is that Smith and Gee won't fire Tressel before the sanctions, but that he won't be the head coach come 2012. Whether that means they fire him after the sanctions, or after the season I don't know, but I just don't see either of them having the backbone to make the call on their own.
Gee may have made his comment in jest, but it either shows that he is a spineless little worm or that Tressel does in fact have some dirt on him and he is a spineless little worm. Regardless I believe Gee will try to bail out the ship with a little tin pail, unfortunately for him, he's not trying to save "The African Queen", he's trying to save the Titanic.

like my grandpappy always said: "When in doubt, use '/s'"
|3 years 21 weeks ago||I don't think you can fairly compare our reactions with theirs||
Like you said, "I haven't seen anything similar in OSU's case". We were probably guilty of some shooting of the messanger (e.g. Trent) but since we haven't been charged with anything as damning or with as much program killing potential as this it's not a fair comparison. In our situation the allegations were grossly exaggerated, whereas in their situation the original allegations appear to be just the tip of the iceberg. I'd like to think that in the same situation we as a fanbase would act differently, but there is no way of knowing that.
it's all just Apples to Oranges really.
|3 years 21 weeks ago||is that the one with that really annoying commercial||

the $250 PS3 he got wasn't anywhere near as good as the $200 xbox 360 slim, much less the $300. Especially since the playstation network is down again.
|3 years 22 weeks ago||360 slim is cheaper as well||
it's like $200.00 and my friend just bought a PS3 (reg not slim) for like $250.00 and it wasn't backward compatable, has a smaller hard drive, otherwise it would've been like $300.00
|3 years 22 weeks ago||Strong Safety wasn't too bad||
most of the time the other team handed it off to the RB and if you timed it right you could get like 4-5 TFLs per game

|3 years 23 weeks ago||Given that they don't have a midwest prospect scout||
I'm not surprised they'd make an idiotic assumption such as this... I'm a little surprised RJS was the only one in the Top 100, but I probably shouldn't be considering that Rivals hates midwest kids.
|3 years 23 weeks ago||generally speaking||
anybody who uses terms like "scUM", "Meatchicken", "DickRod", or "cHoke" (or any variation of these), isn't all that clever or intelligent at all.

|3 years 23 weeks ago||Rules||
"The rules prohibit athletes and their relatives from receiving discounts that are not offered to the general public."
But this offer was extended to the general public: anyone who brings in an authentic signed OSU game warn jersey and tickets to the National Championship/Fiesta Bowl can trade them in for a lightly used car.

man, M. Night Shyamalan is getting anxious, usually the twists come towards the end but we're only half way through and already we found out the kindly old man who never did anything wrong in his life is a sleazy cheater...
I can't wait to see what other twists there are, the anticipation is killing me!
