I think a lot of how the secondary performs depends on how good the Big Ten's receivers are, off the top of my head I can't think of any that scare me as much as Floyd or Posey.

That was the best game they had all year defending the perimeter I thought, bodes well for the rest of the year.

Even though they gave up that long TD the rest of the game was pretty damn ineffective for Purdue.

I know lots of people are screaming for them to run a screen but given the way the day was going, it would likely have been blown up since they seemed to know what they were going to do before they did.

And that snap count thing is frustrating, hand goes down, ball snapped, a little change up might help.

While I agree to a certain extent, they did give up boatloads of points to Indiana and UMass.  The fact that they haven't done that yet is proof enough for me that there is improvement.

The next two weeks will go a long way to seeing what the D really is all about.

I'd be interested in what Captain Buckeye has to say about MSU's defense and they fact that they have played no good offense outside of ND.

I don't even know which games to watch, its hard to get into the beginnings of games when its not a team I root for.  The end of games are usually better when they are close.

A Greg Mattison called defense reminds me a lot of Jonas Mouton.  When he hits a play, its huge and amazing and everyone be like damn.  When he whiffs on one its seriously bad news as evidenced by that last ND touchdown.  It will get better as players get more accustomed to it but until the personnel improves it won't you will continue to see huge RPS numbers both ways.  Hell I don't think Gerg ever got a +3, I'm sure he got plenty of minuses though.  In that respect alone its a step in the right direction.

I know YSU is going max protect on a lot of their pass plays but I thought Sparty's D-line was supposedly the strength of this defense.  Not getting any pressure has to be troubling, hopefully they keep this up all year.

Oh OK, seems to me though that if it had any merit, more would have come out by now, especially player discipline type stuff.

One of these years people will talk about Michael Cox in spring ball and we will actually see him do something in the fall.

Yeah,  I don't know much about their QB situation but you have think that whoever Garcia's backup was last year must not have been that great otherwise he might have started over him.  I don't follow their recruiting much so maybe they have a hotshot QB coming up.

Apparently Garcia is only a junior, he seems like he's been around forever and I thought he was gone.  Well then I expect a similar season to this year from them.  Flashes of brilliance but ultimately disappointing.

Well he definitely took a step back if you look at his numbers from 2008 and 2009.  Consensus All-American and BT Defensive Player of the year to just first team All Big Ten this year is clearly a downgrade.  That is not to say he didn't have a good year, he just didn't meet expectations seemingly, he probably should have gone pro last year riding those honors.

Seems unlikely to me that he would have had much of a hand in recruiting any of the current IU commits since he's only been on staff 3 weeks.

I remember about a year ago they had a jet flying over the Detroit River for the boat races.  It was pretty awesome, my friend and I thought it was going supersonic but it was actually just water vapor creating a neat effect.  Anyway I asked my future brother in law about that and he said it would have smashed car windows, so when you say average house, do you mean the bigger it is, the less likely the windows go?

And I think that Wisky might be in the national title picture if they didn't play the weakest non-conference schedule year in, year out.  Talk about the pot calling the kettle black, this has been their particular calling card for years.

The fact that there will be a lot of upperclassmen no matter who starts is very encouraging.  Not having to play a ton of freshmen will be great.

I just knew bad things were to follow after that happened.  Most defenses wouldn't mind pushing the other team back another 5 yards but our defense isn't "most" defenses sadly.

That block on the 50 yarder was ridiculous by Lewan, he blocked the entire DL by completely obliterating that tackle and pushing him into the rest of the linemen.

You could have driven a Mack truck through that lane.

While I think the LBs are also the bigger problem, you have to admit that besides MM, the d-line hasn't stood out either. 

Yeah, he hasn't really had a return yet, in fact the last few years have seen very few returns.  I wonder if that is partly how we do special teams or that we've had disaster looming at the PR spot since Steve Breaston left.

We went to Vineology a few weeks back and it was pretty awesome.  Great wine selection and lots of different things on the menu.

That was such a crappy season, the other day I caught a classic game on BTN, UM-Wisky, when I realized it was 2005 I turned it off.

Some things still suck 5+ years later.

The reason that MSU only has one rival is that they don't beat enough of the teams on a regular basis to actually generate a rivalry so by default the instate one with UM is the only one they should have really.

I bet Utah didn't start walk-ons and I also bet they had an actual 2 deep.  I think the bare cupboard argument is more about numbers and less about talent.  Teams need depth plain and simple, players get tired and injured.  Those 2 and 3 star players at Utah were likely backed up by 2 and 3 stars, and most are likely better than walk-ons.

Starting walk-ons is both a depth and a talent problem, The Decimated Defense series by Misopogon points this out very well.

I remember that day vividly because some of my fraternity brothers and I were visiting our MSU chapter and watched the game with them.  They mostly sat there dumbfounded as to how he could keep getting those carries and gaining yards.  That kind of schadenfreude is priceless, up close and in person right there, watching as the life gets crushed out of them.

Needless to say we didn't stick around for their party.

Forgive me if I have no faith in MSU beating Penn State in Happy Valley despite whatever their QB situation is.

Looked to me like the Dutch keeper took a step in the wrong direction and the ball was hit with such pace it was too hard to react to it being a foot out of position.

The Netherlands are good and all but this was definitely an upset.  That second half for Brazil was very uncharacteristic, as well as they played the first, the second was that bad.
