.... perhaps the only thing missing was David Brandon walking up to ND/AD Jack Swarbrick on the field after the game and giving him a letter:
How did you like UTL 2? Fun, huh!
Anyhow, I wanted to let you know a few things:
1. UM will not appear in 2014 at South Bend;
2. The 7-figure cancellation fee awaits outside in a Brinks truck in pennies, courtesy of Steve Ross. Lennay Kekua will drive it back for you gratis;
3. Appy State has an open date next year; the switchboard number is 828-262-2000, ask Mabel to connect you; and
4. Gordon Gee was right.
All the best;
P.S. The Boilermakers are sneaky good.
P.P.S I thought Brian Kelly's F-bomb purple-face really looked awesome on ESPN under the lights.
|1 year 13 weeks ago||OK, you're right...||
... I guess I was a bit out of line and somewhat harsh.
And I fully expect some in East Lansing to make fun of the shirt Coach Hoke wore yesterday. And be especially critical of the guest speaker he had address the team.
PS The speaker didn't need a workshirt with a name tag. Team 134 were all familiar with his work. He actually had a blue collar on, though. With one small item on it in maize. It had wings.

It would take a lot of Pulitzer Prize-level research to determine the sports nickname of the University of Michigan.

While the Hoosiers have a legacy in basketball, I think our young guns think of Indiana as a mid-major otherwise.
I have a hunch that Stauskas will be doing this at least 5 times:
In a dark jersey...
Tom Crean will be checking his watch to see if he'll make the flight to NOLA to watch one of his wife's brothers lose to the other.
All signs point to Wolverines. Epic win.

The Sklars actually read the book. JUB also mentioned how Michigan probably got the right coach, even though Les Miles has the #1 ranked college team and Jim Harbaugh is likely the NFL coach of the year.
All in all, a good segment on the book and THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM...

UCF is 5-7.

|3 years 6 weeks ago||Virtual tailgate...||
... I think Sparty is overrated, perhaps wildly so. The only team they beat of substance is TSIO, which was decimated by suspensions. And Sparty nearly gave that one away.
My only wish is this: no redzone turnovers by Michigan. We all know what happened at the end of the first drive against Sparty last year and how it deflated Michigan.
What I see happening: Michigan goes up by 10+ points. Cousins has to throw, and Mattison sends the House. The weak-kneed Sparty "faithful" start to boo, and the team tightens up big-time.
My call: Michigan wins by two touchdowns. If we get more than 30 points, I think this could be a blowout.
And when Dour Coach D calls the "Little House on the Prairie" play (fake punt with the team in Conestoga wagon formation), Kovacs breaks through and tackles the punter for a huge loss.
Then the ESPN cameras focus on the sideline, and Deadeye Vincent Smith lets Sparty know there's a new sheriff in town. And his name is Brady:

Coach Kill shows a lot of courage; you just have to wonder how the players feel when they make bonehead plays and then quickly look over at the sideline...
By all accounts he is a great coach, and has had success before. I hope he finishes the season healthy.

I can think of about 2.5 million+ reasons why RichRod shouldn't be chapped right now.
This is at the end of the AP interview republished on ESPN:
"I'm hungry as I've ever been to coach," he said. "I don't want to lose my confidence. We have a formula that can take a team to BCS bowls and compete for national championships. If I'm at the right school that gives you total support and is pulling in the right direction, I think we'll do that."
This borders on the delusional, and shows why MSC and DB had enough. There's always someone else to blame; he couldn't get enough money to hire the ghost of Lombardi as DC.
National Championships? He couldn't even beat Little Brother.
He's an ACC or Big East coach. Maybe Vandy or Kentucky in the SEC.
Thank goodness MSC hired DB and DB can make a tough decision. Michigan will soar under Hoke, rather than continue to struggle under the RichRod reality show.

I maintain if he doesn't throw the first pick in the end zone vs MSU (yeah that MSU) we likely win that game. We looked unstoppable in that first drive. If memory serves, another pick was in or near the end zone.
Even a minor improvement in the running game saves Denard's platinum legs, and also gives our D a little more time to catch a breather on the bench.
Add to these two improvements even a slight improvement on defense (a few more stops and punts) and I see at least 8 wins next year without too much trouble.
This is why I liked Brady Hoke from the start: running and stopping the run are right in his wheelhouse.

... what a grass-eating, timeout-wasting, hen-pecked suffering, Bo wanna-be.
He and Harbaugh owe Michigan A LOT. Neither apparently have the courage or conviction to lead a team out of the tunnel in the Big House.
Harbaugh: over/under with the 49ers is 3.5 years. Then becomes QB coach for his big brother with the Ravens.
Miles: over/under for completing the new contract: 4.5 years. Then retires to the home he bought on the Huron River in 2007. Becomes macrobiotic vegan, eating native grasses while MgoCanoers paddle by and yell "Fourth and Eight: Go For It!"
Hoke: over/under as Michigan HC. 15 years. The MgoBlog servers are safe for a long time.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||it's typical...||
... some mgoblogger with serious Harbaugh manlove registers a domain last week and slaps together a POS website. No contact info, and he hides behind a proxy with his GoDaddy private registration.
If you can't man-up when you bash a new coach by name (and domain), then you are beneath contempt.
But when he actually tries to market his T-shirt or bumper sticker or whatever, bingo! He will have gone one step too far, and will learn what DMCA means and what a C&D is.
When you throw bricks at the Big House, you better be ready to run.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||it should be...||

Harbaugh said "NFL," Miles said "mmmmmmmbrrmgmmmmblbm" (sound of eating Tiger Stadium grass).
DB can't procure HC services at gunpoint and spirit above-mentioned Bo-wanna-bees to the Big House under sedation.
It's like 90%+ of this board is certifiable on the HC search: ignoring the facts and pounding the virtual podium.
Thank God someone with Michigan ties who doesn't use the hallowed memory of Bo as a career stepping stone really wants a challenge.
I can't wait to see Brady Hoke prowling the sidelines in a pair of black high-top cleats, knowing enough about a good defense so he doesn't have to use the word "Lombardi."

Thank God Miles isn't coming; Harbaugh never was.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||David Brandon...||
... is a fine example of "Leaders and Best."
Anonymous board posters who attack him with iPhone posts from Angell Hall or Dungeons-and-Dragons meetups, not so much.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||I am already won over...||
For all Harbaugh and Miles talk about playing for Bo, both of them:
-- used Michigan for negotiating leverage (Miles twice).
-- had to stay where their wives were comfortable.
-- were too afraid to lead a team out of the tunnel into the Big House before 100,000+.
Brady Hoke, on the other hand, said Michigan was his dream job, and when he had a chance to take the reins like Bo once did, he grabbed them without hesitation.
I am very excited about the start of the Brady Hoke era.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||You've got to be kidding...||
... there is NO WAY Hoke would take DC/HCIW. It would be a demotion and there's no chance he takes Muschamp-type money when he's probably making more at San Diego State.

... Les acts inscrutable, so later he could claim he wasn't a candidate, just a trusted advisor to his alma mater.
LSU's Athletic Department publicly says he's "our man" and "really likes it here" but through back channels says it wouldn't hold Les to his total buyout.
Brandon says he won't be rushed but is doing this search 24/7 on an aircraft, perhaps using Money Mayweather as a consigliere:
I think Brandon would rent the Big Chill's B-2 stealth bomber for the search if he could and do a low pass (supersonic) over Columbus when he's bringing the new HC back to A2 for the presser.
And for a certain Detroit sportsradio wad (GFY, MV) who insists that this search shows that Michigan is a "regional program," all I can say is the ESPN sideline reporter during the NC game (Joe Schad) is tweeting about Michigan between plays...
While I was a Brady Hoke guy, I am warming a bit to Les Miles given his awesome record in the SEC. He has lost fewer games in six years than dear old RichRod lost in three, and has four 11+ win seasons over his tenure, more than anyone else in the SEC during the same period. Logic would say he stays, but I think a certain former Michigan HC is exerting a strong pull from somewhere...
Les may be using us like it appears he did in 2007. But who cares, it's awesome theater that's playing out on a national stage in real time.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||OMG!||
|3 years 45 weeks ago||You've got to be kidding...||

And there is nothing in his (or any coach's) contract that losses constitute cause.
He was fired without cause and will be paid at least $2.5 million pre-tax.
(Go ahead and neg-away fellow Wolverines...)
|3 years 45 weeks ago||A big +1!||

|3 years 45 weeks ago||C'mon now...||
... this has been beaten to death here; RichRod was told he was out Wednesday but the arrangements were finalized Thursday. He knew it was coming and likely was well prepped by his agent and lawyer.
The argument: you decided to fire me at least back to the OSU game, and therefore this delayed "evaluation" is just a sham to avoid paying me my entire $4 million buyout. He probably threw in some stuff about allowing him to twist in the wind and this harming his future employment prospects.
So what likely happened overnight is that they negotiated a sweetened severance, to something north of $2.5 million.
They probably also negotiated the press release RichRod would put out and perhaps even a commitment not to press Denard to come with him.
Anyway, who cares at this point?

You may have been in management but you have never been a big-time college AD. You can't talk to candidates directly without getting permission. And you can't do that pre-bowl games without coming off like arrogant assholes or just being used as negotiating leverage. Both of which Bill Martin managed to do last time.
Candidly, you sound like you may have been more of a middle-manager type. Pushing paper up and slapping your directs down. Spending too much time agonizing about the past; too little time taking action to influence the future.
If you are still preoccupied with this stuff, just wait and read John U. Bacon's book. Brandon inherited a mess and refused to take the easy way out. He didn't put off a hard decision because he knew things would just get worse.

1. Don't chase flavor of the week: scratch Harbaugh.
2. Don't chase other B1G coaches: scratch Fitz and Bangin' Bo (NNTB).
3. Don't chase gimmick lifers: scratch Patterson and Petersen.
4. Don't chase old NFL coaches: scratch a lot.
6. Don't chase idiots: scratch Miles.
7. Don't chase only people who have run through the tunnel at the Big House.
So to me, the answer is clear, and he's on the temporary site banner, albeit offensively.
Michigan doesn't need a "name" coach to help the program. The best coaches have always been from the outside, sometimes with archrival lineage. They have been leaders on the way up, not lateral hires.
The "Save us Jim" contingent has been embarrassing and I am confident Brandon saw this. I just hope he can resist Les Miles, because he would be an absolute disaster.
The good news to me: apparently Barwis may stay. Mike Barwis with a plastic fork is all anyone needs to be led into battle.

And to those who think Brandon acted in haste?
The mind boggles...
|3 years 46 weeks ago||C'mon, you're missing the real deal...||
... this was done with the approval and perhaps encouragement of Brandon and/or MSC.
They (rightly, I think) don't want a coach who views Michigan as a waypoint, not a destination. They won't knowingly hire a Nick Saban.
The man-love for Harbaugh among the Michigan faithful was borderline cringe-worthy.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Of course he will...||
... Steve Ross wants to be Jerry Jones in sandals, roaming the sidelines. He sees Harbaugh as stealing some of the thunder of the Heat and the Three Amigos.
This will end badly. I think the over/under for Harbaugh's tenure is about 3.5 years. By that time, Brady Hoke can bring him in as Asst QB coach to Scot Loeffler.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Yeah...||
... but the difference is you are trading bon mots with guys who can't see the full keyboard on their laptops due to their beerguts.

|3 years 46 weeks ago||He's gone...||
... Yahoo has him taking some billionaire's money in Miami:
Steve Ross just allowed Brandon and MSC to save face, hire Brady Hoke, and have money to pay for a great OC and DC.
Besides, after Hoke's first NC four years from now, he can hire Harbaugh as QB coach after he gets blown out of Miami (has to play the Jets and Patriots two times each year).

|3 years 46 weeks ago||generally tl;dr||
... but as to your last 3 questions.
1. Turmoil? Maybe, only if we hire Harbaugh, who apparently wants the NFL.
2. Brandon continue what RichRod started? WTF? If you watched Brandon's presser, you know the answer. He wants the ball-boys to be defensive-minded! And he is aware Vince Lombardi isn't available.
3. A team without Denard. Hopefully not, possibly yes. Denard is exciting against inferior defensive talent. RichRod took things in 3 years to the point that the offense had to score 67 points to beat Illinois.
Please get some rest and then go outside for fresh air.
Mods set the modes, by the way.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Give Brandon a break...||
... let's take a quick look at timing.
1. Brandon said he would give the program a review at the end of season. Michigan made a New Year's Day bowl game. That's Jan 1.
1A. As as related point, I'm sure he didn't want to nuke the bowl experience of players who hadn't played in a bowl game the two prior years. Or have Fred Jackson and a few grad assistants coach the Gator Bowl had he blown out RichRod the day after the Football Bust. Again, that's Jan. 1.
2. If Harbaugh was a prime candidate, you don't want to nuke his team's experience and distract him before the Orange Bowl. That's Jan 3.
3. Brandon meets with RichRod the next day, likely gives him the review, and tells him he's gone. There are details to work out re recruiting schedules, team meetings, and tweaking RichRod's severance. That's Jan 4.
4. Brandon completes RichRod's removal in the AM, holds the tough presser in the early PM, and clearly is nostalgic for the days of delivering pizzas to drunk frat boys. That's TODAY, Jan 5.
So there we have it. Harbaugh couldn't take any opening before he coached Stanford in the Orange Bowl. It's not Brandon's fault that Harbaugh has NFL aspirations. It's also not Brandon's fault that Harbaugh's wife just dropped a kid, she likes the left coast, nor is it his fault that Harbaugh apparently feels a real pull to the 49ers to follow the path by a mentor, Bill Walsh. Yes THAT Bill Walsh.
I also think that Harbaugh is using his alma mater as leverage, just like Les Miles did 3 years ago. So good luck Jimmy working for the douchebag York family and don't take it personally when we don't return your calls in 4 years when the douchebag York family fires your ass. You are following Mike Singletary, who drops his pants to make a point.
Yet because Brandon didn't pull back a maize-and-blue curtain today and introduce Harbaugh, everyone seems to think he screwed up.
And to those who say you don't fire RichRod unless you already have Harbaugh? Well I would say you never ran a company or a major football program. Brandon is AD of the University of Michigan, not the School of Harbaugh. And RichRod may be a great guy, offensive guru, blah, blah, blah. But on any objective standpoint, he failed and showed no real likelihood of succeeding.
Unlike many (including me) flailing away anonymously on this fine board, Brandon has to deal with reality, and work very hard to get through a tough situation. One he didn't create and I believe he really wanted to work out differently.
I for one am very glad David Brandon is AD and I have complete confidence that he will make an excellent choice. And I really really hope it is someone like Bo. You know, someone who is NOT a "Michigan Man".
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Here's my take...||
... posted yesterday in the CC post-o-rama.
I think it will take at least top 5 money to get JH in AA. It may not be sufficient, but would, IMHO, be necessary.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Damn Fine Les Miles at $3.9 million per. So you at least got to put Jammin' Jimmy to the $4 million level.
For the top 14 CFB HCs re 2010 pay, Click Here.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||I have a feeling...||
... that all the needful vibes being sent out of AA JH's way could make him think that Michigan may be like the nice girl who plays a great hand of bridge and is just too desperate for a date for the Sadie Hawkins dance.
How this program got to a point where only one person can right the ship is worthy of serious examination down the road.
Any time I have been involved in an executive-level search that has been targeted to one person, it has ended badly: you get spurned at the last minute, or the person comes in and thinks they are more important than anyone else. And then they leave prematurely.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||All this CC stuff...||
... brings this quote by William Goldman to mind. He was a screenwriter talking about Hollywood, and it is apt regarding sports reporters talking about DB and JH:
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Think about it...||
... how many coaches have the chance to play a big time college football program against two-plus NFL teams at the same time.
If JH comes to AA, he will command top-five money (Damn Fine Les Miles is #5 at $3.9 million). Mike Singletary of the 49ers made RichRod money ($2.5 million per, #12 in the nation).
JH's agent will go into hyperspeed within 90 seconds of the end of the Orange Bowl. The 49ers and Denver openings mean DB will have to spend high and spend long to secure JH.
JH needs one of these to back up to the loading dock at the Big House.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||word on the street...||
... is that you are related to Pam.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Awesome!||
... you got mad Photoshop skillz.
But RichRod is no longer in the picture.
And no, I don't think DB is dilatory if he doesn't have a deal in place. He knows better than to do that before the Stanford-Va Tech game.
But I do believe he has some parameters in place and one local Detroit sports guy reported this AM that DB and JH met in Fla in the last few days.
DB is handling an extremely difficult situation as best as he can. The good news in all of this (via coverage on today's ESPN and major sports blogs): he has positioned Michigan as the only college option for the hottest coach anywhere, aka JH.
I really think there is a good Plan B not named Hoke or Fitzgerald. DB is not an "all-in" guy for anything, no CEO who thinks strategically ever is. He is also keeping his own counsel. Something tells me that few (if any) in Schembechler Hall know what he is thinking. And if any of them who do leak to the media, I guarantee you he will throw them out the door and into Canham's pool.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||News Flash....||
... Holgorsen has joined WVa as OC and HC-in-waiting. Belotti left AD position at Oregon.
Patterson ain't leaving TCU with the cakewalk he will have in the Big East for BCS berths.
And Gruden? You have to throw that crack pipe out the window.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||OK...||
My first thought was this:
But then I figured you could go here:
|3 years 46 weeks ago||No...||
... RichRod is digging the hole in the Big House.
DB's job is to stop this CFB version of the "China Syndrome" and get someone better quickly.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Whatever...||
... it was actually a decent piece of writing.
One thing I really found insightful re the RR vs JH comparison:
|3 years 46 weeks ago||tl;dr||
|3 years 46 weeks ago||NFW!||
Google "les miles" and #2 in the instant results is your answer.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||NFW...||
The Pirate Flag will NOT fly over the Big House; we don't want HC's with ongoing litigation, either.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||It's not surprising...||
... why move across the country when you have a newborn? He won't even have to get a new telephone number!
If this program review was really just no more than "Help us JH!" then we were really worse off than anyone thought.
If JH wants the NFL this bad, he would probably have been a short-timer in AA. Yeah that would have been OK, but better get someone now who views Michigan as a destination, not a waypoint.
And, face it people, the over-under on RichRod's tenure is about 4 days at this point.
DB had to have a list, albeit a short one. "JH" written 5 times on a Post-It ain't a list.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||On ESPN...||
... Chris Mortenson said tonight that he thinks JH is headed to AA. One interesting comment was that he could "probably make more money in AA than in Denver or San Francisco."
Hell, make JH Top 5 with $4 million +.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||C'mon...||
RichRod won in the Big East. JH in the Pac 10.
This year Big East champ is UConn. We beat 'em and their coach hits the exits as soon as the laffer against Oklahoma was over.
I really think RichRod is better suited to the Big East or the ACC. It's not his fault he was hired.
As I said elsewhere today, DB's decision on RichRod is easy; his challenge in finding a better HC is much bigger and will define his AD tenure.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||EFZ!||
... have bartender at the Excalibur cut off Gary Moeller. Three NCs and he hands the reigns over to OC Jim Harbaugh in 2008.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||D-who?||
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Are you kidding?||
JH is not going to expend life-energy trying to turn this guy into a pro QB:
|3 years 46 weeks ago||face it...||
... DB has an easy decision and a hard task:
1) Fire RichRod.
2) Land a Better HC.
I supported RichRod up until about halftime of the OSU game. I really started to break bad after the Footbal Bust. We really learned something about RichRod at that event, none of it was good; and I'm not talking about channelling Josh Groban.
By the second quarter of the Gator Bowl, the poor UM faithful in the stands were on their cellphones trying to get an earlier flight out of FLA, and seeing if they could stop payment on that last 2010 donation to UM.
At this point, DB would face alumni/fan mutiny if he keeps RichRod, hell Barwis might be a better interim.
As the diary poster inferred about DB's experience with private equity, RichRod isn't worth the continued investment. He shows no sign of ever providing an adequate return. He is not Big Ten, Big Progam material. He will return to the Big East (Pitt?) or the ACC (Clemson?).
DB's legacy as AD will be defined within the next 10 days. If it's not JH (who is clearly the first choice), and it turns out to be Brady (NNTB) then I'm all in, because I know damn sure DB is.
If there's one bright spot in yesterday's B1G results (and UW's trashing of Nebraska), it's that the conference is not that strong right now. We know that tOSU would lose Tuesday without Terrelle and the Tattoo Crew. Maybe this reality and 4 million other reasons could convince JH to return home.

You know it's a lost cause when you are spending more time over at the Sparty game, hoping Saban can shut out Mirthless Mark Dantonio.
When there is no compelling reason to continue course, change is the only option. I think DB was wise to hold up giving grades until after the final exam. Tate isn't the only one to have his status with the program unclear at this point.
And those mo-ther fuck-ing cowbells...
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Lesser of two evils...||

Still, I very much want (expect) Sparty to be outed by Alabama. I see an Iowa-type performance by the Cons on the Cedar River.

In other news, the Columbus News-Dispatch reports that one of Terrelle Pryor's tattoos was "y = mx + b" and TP freakin' aced his trig final.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Awesome!||

... Luck stays at Stanford, and so does JH.
Therefore UM is left at the altar, as are the 49ers.
JH really wants the San Diego gig when Norval finally gets the boot next year (JH knows you need a star QB to succeed in the NFL, and any team that could draft Luck in 2012 would suck).
The alums who have always hated RichRod and coveted JH will force Michigan into the Brady Hoke era or some retread former NFL coach.
RichRod will go on to great success (perhaps a NC) somewhere else.
I fear DB is about to pull a Ty Willingham; boot a coach after 3 years right before the breakout year.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Just sayin'...||
|3 years 47 weeks ago||I'm not sure...||
... but I think that paneling is bleached.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||If Luck stays in school...||
... I think it's even money that Harbaugh stays at Stanford.
I believe there was a recruiting commitment by JH to Luck to stay there as long he does. I am sure Luck's father, now the AD at WVU, would have wanted that for his son, who was recruited by Harbaugh after RichRod left WVU for UM.
Perhaps next year they can be a package deal to a better team than the Panthers.
There is some serious man-love going on between Luck and Harbaugh.
So all you Harbaugh fans out there, get ready for the Brady Hoke era. There may be some serious nostalgia for RichRod about one year from now...
