At this point, I think it'd be beneficial to not accept any bowl game invite. This team, from the coaches to the players, don't deserve a bowl game. And this is Michigan; we shouldn't want to play in a crappy bowl game.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||I was at that ND/Minnesota||
I was at that ND/Minnesota game. Minnesota came out fast and physical in the 1st, just missing on some quality scoring changes. After the 1st intermission, it's like a whole different Gopher team came out of the locker room. They were slow, couldn't get out of the zone, bad passes, etc.
I was hoping to see some high quality, fast paced college hockey. Instead, I saw a slow game bogged down by offsides and penalties. It's too bad. Let's just hope the Gophers can come back and win tomorrow.

The sister of a friend of mine at work (who recently quit) is in a relationship with Mitch. Once I found out, I of course asked about his condition and status. What he told me two weeks ago was that is was worse than what was being reported. He didn't know much outside of that general statement, but it didn't sound good.
Even if he does come back, he may not have the same energy and play style as he did last year.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Yes Auburn was a spread, but||
Yes Auburn was a spread, but they were a run first spread. Teams that excel at running the ball seem to have success against the smaller Oregon D. And that enables them to control the clock and keep that Oregon O off the field.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||There was equal pushing by||
There was equal pushing by both sides. But there was an obvious pull of the jersey by the defender, which will draw a flag every time. I think it should have been a holding, but they called a PI. He reached out and grabbed the inside of the receivers jersey.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Everyone needs to remember||
Everyone needs to remember that Oregon plays a speed based defense. When they face a physical team, they tend to struggle.
L to Stanford last year 17-14
L to LSU 40-27 in 2011
L to Auburn 22-19 in 2010
But they excel against teams similar to them, ie Oklahoma State and Kansas State and USC

Doesn't matter who is playing qb, rb, or any offensive position right now. With the playcalling of Borges, it doesn't matter who is on the field.
And why throw Morris into this mess right now and potentially mess with him. Just let Gardner take the beating the rest of the season, and start over next year.

Fire Borges and Funk. Today's playcalling was worse than last year against ohio. Embarrassing. What a joke. We are lightyears away from where we want to be. Sad to say, we are lower tier in the Big-10 with these fools at the helm of this team.

I bet he is happy to not be playing for this guy anymore:
|22 weeks 10 hours ago||You are the only one||
I am sure of this. He is way too slow. Especially in the East, where every team has speed instead of playing physical hockey. Bertz doesn't fit in the East...nah...fit in the NHL anymore. If he can't forecheck (too slow), can't backcheck (too slow), never has the puck on his stick unless someone like Dats gets it for him, then what good is he? For shoot-outs only?
|22 weeks 16 hours ago||That is true||
He can't be cut while he is on the injured list. Once he gets healthy, I believe we can do whatever we want with him.
|22 weeks 16 hours ago||My lines||
Hank - Pavs - Abs (only b/c Babs loves him here; I'd prefer Nyquist or Tatar)
Mule - Weiss - Alfie
Miller - Helm (crossing fingers) - Eaves (these 3 are great together)
Nyquist - Andersson - (one of) Tootoo/ Bertz/Sammy (whover is left on the team)
Smith - Kronwall
Ericsson - Kindl
DeKeyser - Quincey
Gotta split up Krons/Ericsson b/c they are just too slow. Need to mix in speed with the big bodies.
|22 weeks 16 hours ago||I think||
I think everyone is being way way way too hard on Smith. Losing DeKeyser really hurt us in the playoffs. Smith wasn't perfect, but he was trying dam hard against the like of Kane, Bickell, and Toews. He was over his head, yes, but he still had his moments where he shined in that series. I'd put more of the blame on the slow forwards that couldn't help a lick in our own end, which would result in a Smith vs 2 Hawks situation.
Smith will be part of the future of the Wings D. Him and Kindl are the offensive D-men, and Lashoff and DeKeyser are the defensive defensemen of the group.
|22 weeks 17 hours ago||I agree||
I agree with everything except trading Smith. Fast, skilled, offensively minded defensemen don't come around very often. He is going to be a great fit next to either Kindl or DeKeyser for the next 10+ years.
|22 weeks 17 hours ago||Invest in a young defenseman, you say?||
DeKeyeser - 23
Kindl - 26
Lashoff - 22
Smith - 24
We also have a couple of big time D-men prospects in GR. So a young defensemen is not entirely something we need to focus on. We have a very very strong Top 4 all under 26 (once we lock up Smith, of course).
|22 weeks 17 hours ago||Wow||
Lots of ideas you threw out there. Discussion commence:
1. Brunner: No; will explain later
2. Boyes: No. Don't need another 30+ forward.
3. Antropov: No. Gagne: No. Don't need anymore forwards
4. Don't bring back Cleary: Completely agree; don't need any more 30+ forwards.
5. Young kids. Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes again. But, you chose the wrong young kids. We NEED to resign Smith, Nyquist, and Andersson. ASAP.
And as for the young kids in GR, this whole group of kids will be ready next year (and some are even ready right now)
Tatar, Mursak, Sheahan, Jurco, Ferraro, and Glendening. We have too many aging forwards, with no room for these kids.
6. Correct; we don't need any more help on defense.
7. That would be a very terrible trade. We don't want to lose all our young kids for Stamkos.
My final thought regarding what the Wings need to do is to make a trade to clear up some cap space and open up some forward spots.
We only have 2.3 mil to resign Smith, Nyqust, and Andersson. I think we need 6 mil to cover all three. The way we clear up the necessary space is to trade Emmerton and 1 of Tootoo/Bertz/Sammy; and in return we get some kids for GR or some draft picks. That way we clear up cap space and open up forward spots for all the talented youth we have in GR.
My Pipe Dream is getting rid of Bertz, Sammy, and Tootoo and getting a couple of 4th rd draft picks.

|25 weeks 1 day ago||Salary Cap||
With how tight the salary cap is going to be down the road, we don't need to overpay for a FA defensemen. They usually go for 5+ million, and I don't think we need to overspend when we have very capable pieces that have the potential to be the next Girardi's, Brian Cambell's, or Keith Yandle's.
|25 weeks 1 day ago||No need to look for D help||
Then you have Smith, Lashoff, DeKeyser, Kindl, Colaiacovo, and Quincey.
Our future is in Smith, DeKeyser, Lashoff, and Kindl. That is a strong 4 to build around once Kronwall and Ericsson are gone. Quincey and Colo won't last too long, but would likely be replaced by someone on the Griffins.
That's 8 defensemen. We also have several strong defensemen prospects in the AHL in Billins and Paetsch.
Wings have no reason to reach in FA for defensemen or forwards. We have everything we need in the AHL right now.

Was 8 yrs old watching the game at Mr. Joes in Southfield. I will never forget the atmosphere in that place. The punt return, the pick 6; the place went crazy. If I wasn't a die hard M fan before that day, I definitely became one during that game.
That defense was sick. Dhani Jones, James Hall, Glen Steele, Sam Sword, Marcus Ray, Charles Woodson and a young Ian Gold.
Also, Keith Jackson. Mmmmmm. Nothing like listening to Keith Jackson while I'm eating my cheerios for breakfast.
|26 weeks 12 hours ago||Rangers||
The Rangers have our number. I have zero confidence in our boys against the Rangers. Doesn't matter when or where; we can't beat that stinking team.
As for the season, I agree with everything you said. And it's the exact same thing we all said last year: inconsistent, struggle against top teams, bullpen issues, (managing some would say).
As for the class of both leagues, I think the two teams to beat right now are St. Louis and Texas. With Atlanta and Detroit being the next bests. I just don't think Boston, NYY, or Oakland are going to be much competition against Detroit or Texas. Same in the NL with St. Louis and Atlanta. Nobody really compares against those two in the NL, especially with St. Louis. That team is primed to win the next 5 WS'.

OT but still baseball related.
My dad flew down from Detroit to see me graduate from Missouri State University with my M.S.
There isn't much to do in Springfield MO, except to visit Bass Pro Shop (!). So I looked up if any sports were being played. Lo and behold GVSU was playing at Drury University in the D-II Midwest Regional. GVSU is rolling through the competition, is 3-0, and are in the drivers seat to win the Regional.
Needless to say it was a perfect day for baseball, and there is nothing like seeing my undergraduate university dominate. Go Lakers.
|29 weeks 4 days ago||That 2nd period||
What a big period for the Wings. And to cap it off with a goal was beyond huge.
Now we just have to avoid our newfound 3rd period meltdowns and we'll have taken over home ice advantage.
|29 weeks 4 days ago||My Question||
Why are players choosing Ferris over GVSU? It seems like GVSU would be the more desirable option due to their national name recognition and success at sending guys to the NFL. Also GVSU would give you a good chance to win a National Championship.
I went to GV from 2007-2011. I got there right when the glory days ended :(
I hope they can find a new coach that can get GV football back to always winning the GLIAC and winning Championships.
Also, best of luck to Mr. Robinson at FSU (except against GVSU, of course).

Wednesday, Dec. 4
Boston College at Purdue
Maryland at Ohio State
Miami, FL at Nebraska
North Carolina at Michigan State
Northwestern at North Carolina State
Wisconsin at Virginia
Big Ten wins, 7-5
|31 weeks 14 hours ago||That is surprising||
I'm surprised by that. I expected UNC vs MSU.
But how do they justify giving Northwestern vs NC St? That is crazy in my opinion. Also, a rematch with Wisconsin and Virginia? Really? That is surprising.
OSU should destroy whoever they get with the remaining ACC teams available.
I'm still stunned that Northwestern got NC St. Why didn't Iowa get them? Iowa is going to be very good next year.
|31 weeks 14 hours ago||Not Sure||
But I know Indiana is playing Syracuse, and we are getting Duke.
Remaining powers from each conference:
Big-10: Ohio State and Michigan State
ACC: North Carolina and NC State. Miami will be down. Virginia may be on the rise.
My guess would be MSU gets UNC and OSU gets NC St.

|31 weeks 1 day ago||I'm excited for this||
A home and home with Arizona. This, as well as the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, are helping to keep Michigan basketball in the spotlight. We all know that HS kids love watching these high profile games. Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, MSU, Louisville, etc all participate in these games year in and year out. I'm really happy to see Michigan making an effort to become a part of this group.
The Brooklyn Pre-season NIT was awesome and I think really helped us early in the year.
I'm hoping we get either Duke or UNC in the Big-10/ACC Challenge. That would make for one heck of a non-conference schedule.
Stanford @ Barclays Center (Brooklyn Nets home arena)
@ either Duke or UNC hopefully
@ Iowa State
Georgetown/Florida State/Kansas State/VCU and Michigan headline the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

Mark Donnal is a very interesting player in my eyes. I can see him turing into something special over time. Developing strength, endurance, hone his jump shot, ball-handling; he could be a star.
I think his ceiling could be as high as a Jon Leuer type player. He was the big man for Wisconsin from 2007-2011. 6'10''. Great post game. Great rebounder. Athletic. 3-point range with a high %. Ability to dribble the ball.

Of Spikes steal/lay-up is awesome.
First, it starts out with a McGary blow by (you know, just McGary doing McGary things).
Then you get the subtle Beilein clap from the stool (love the stool). And you get some applause from the bench.
Then Spike comes from seemingly out of the frame, steals it, none of the three Florida players know what just happened, and then Spike pulls off an acrobatic lay-up.
Then you get the full bench + Beilein being happy reaction and a Florida time out.
Not to mention it expanded our lead from 12 (closest they ever came since the 13-0 start), back to a comfortable 16.
That is the winner in my eyes.

|36 weeks 6 days ago||Because||
Pittsburgh has NHL cover boy Sidney Crosby. Also, we faced them in back-back stanley cup finals. We beat them 4-2, and then they beat us in Game 7 after we took an early series lead.
That right there is enough to fuel a rivalry. But the fact that NBC and seemingly every media outlet was pulling for Pittsburgh, and some iffy officiating (I know....), is just more fuel to the fire.
Also throw in that we beat them when they had Hossa, and then they beat us when we get Hossa from them is just another story line.
|36 weeks 6 days ago||But||
Have you seen the Blackhawks play against the Wings this year?
Jan 27. Blackhawks win 2-1 in overtime.
Mar 3. Blackhawks win 2-1 in a shoot-out.
I guess we really do have no hope against Chicago this year, as they clearly dominated us in both games...

Seems to me (from that dunking video) that they certainly saved their best dunks for the NCAA Tournament. Fun to watch a team playing with nothing to lose (unless of course it's against my team).
|37 weeks 1 day ago||The problem with GVSU||
I graduated with my B.S. from GVSU, and am proud to say that I attended just about every baseball, football, soccer, and volleyball that I could fit in my schedule.
The problem with the students at GV is that they expect to win at every sport, and don't see any reason to go watch us clobber another team, week after week.
I think that if they were to join D1, they would get a lot more interest from the student body to go and watch them play. Well, as long as admission to sporting events is still included in the tuition costs.
And I will say that I was embarrassed of the studnet section as a GVSU fan that went to every football game. They wouldn't go to games that were too cold. Or if we were winning by 20 at halftime, they would all leave.
But I'm a proud Laker and would love to see them moved up to D1
|37 weeks 3 days ago||This season||
My emotional trends of this season:
Preseason: Yes! Can't wait for Michigan hockey this year!
Two weeks in: It's okay, just a slow-ish start. We'll pick it up
Two months in: It's okay, we'll still grind our way to the top of the CCHA
Four months in: Well this season is over. Thanks for ruining a season where we should have dominated.
Six months in: Where has this team been all year? Too little too late? Maybe, but this is sure a nice little run.
CCHA Tourney: This team is the best team in the NCAA right now. We just destroyed WMU at their place, which is almost impossible to do and now we crushed Miami! GO BLUE
Championship game: This isn't the same team that beat WMU and Miami. This looks like the January team. WTF!
Oh well. They did it to themselves. Good try, but it was too little too late. That's what happens when you take 4 months off. Usually the end result isn't in your favor.
|37 weeks 5 days ago||X-Factor||
Outside of getting past that stupid half-court line within ten seconds, the x-factor will be our size advantage (wait...Michigan has a size advantage and we're not playing Northwestern?) with GR3 and McGary.
I love knowing that McGary is so cool with the ball, and probably has the best passing ability for a big man in the Nation.
GR3, please replicate everything you did before the South Dakota St game. Whatever you did, it worked. Thank you.
GR3 + McGary = confident 7+ point win.
(Please show up again GR3. That was a lot of fun to watch)

Had to do with Derrick Green, and his eligibility status. Apparently, the rumor stated that he had too low of ACT scores to be eligible for Michigan.

Yes, MSU players were slapping the floor during the 2nd half. I remember one possession, all 5 slapped the floor. And another, three players from the bench were slapping the floor.
All that was before any Michigan player slapped the floor
|40 weeks 3 days ago||I don't agree, entirely.||
I think what we could use more of is Nik getting 25 minutes, and LeVert getting the rest. Or just playing it by ear, and seeing who is hot and what's working that game.
I definitely think they should split time, and whoever is having a better game, get the extra minutes.

|41 weeks 1 day ago||I couldn't agree more||
You took the words out of my mouth, and put them on the internet before I could.
And you even mentioned Satan's style of football. I believe that is what we call Big-10 football, is it not? But now since Alabama and LSU run it so well in the SEC, all of a sudden it's not Big-10 football anymore.
I really am hoping that Hoke and Co. can master that offense the way Michigan always has mastered that offense.
|41 weeks 1 day ago||I doubt||
Denard has the support of Big-10 nation.
You can eliminate any support from ohio and little brother. Also likely Nebraska and Wisconsin. So we may get sympathy votes from Northwestern, Iowa, Minnesota, Penn State, and Purdue. And Illinois and Indiana don't have football fans. And I don't think Maryland and Rutgers are committed to the Big-10 way of life yet.
So it's Michigan + NW, Iowa, Minn, PSU, and Purdue.
At least that's how I see it.
But I did forget that all of Texas (minus A&M fans) will be voting against them.
|41 weeks 1 day ago||It's Michigan||
Against the world!
Go Blue. Go vote!
We are Michigan!
|41 weeks 1 day ago||I love this||
Every week I look forward to this. I put together a similar thing in my head every week and see how mine compares with yours. Never thought that Kansas State win would potentially be over the Co Big-12 champs. Awesome.
Oh, and how about Big-10 officiating carrying over to the Big-12 last night in the Kansas-Iowa St. game? I know it was pretty terrible both ways throughout the game, but that final minute was about as bad as it gets. And people were making a big deal about the officiating in our win over ohio. Pshhh.

Glad to see Howard get a SO. Maybe it'll boost his confidence.

Here's to hoping they had some football/basketball recruits at either tonight's or last night's game.

|41 weeks 5 days ago||!!!||
I'm getting my M.S. right now. Got my B.S from GVSU, and now I'm at Missouri State University getting my Master's.
I'm studying the Cambrian sandstone in Missouri (the Lamotte Sandstone). I'm doing a detailed petrographic analysis on three new cores (drilled pretty much just for me), in an attempt to better understand the depositional history of the Lamotte, an attempt to classify it with more accuracy, create a state wide (of Missouri) fence diagram of the Lamotte, create an isopach map of the Lamotte, and finally (and most importantly) for the purpose of shallow geologic carbon sequestration.
My research is funded by the DOE in hopes of finding a location in Missouri that could serve as a site where we could inject CO2 into the Lamotte Sandstone, where it would be stored safely for a very long time.
So what's your story?
And OT: That Jose Canseco theory must have given you the same reaction I had from it.

1) Continue grinding away at my thesis (in hopes of graduating this May)
2) Not a backpacker, but since I'm a geologist I go do a lot of hiking.
3) I don't think I've ever met one, but I'm assuming I've been in the same place at the same time as multiple MGoBloggers...
4) I've put a hambuger in my grilled cheese before.

A recent tweet from George Campbell, tagging Mason Cole:

|41 weeks 6 days ago||15%||
I would agree that Morgan deserves this 15%, or maybe even more. He is the play caller out on defense. He has the most experience on the court for us, and his ability to on-the-court coach the freshman on how to handle ball screens, pick-and-rolls, etc. is something that Horford or McGary can't replace.
I think he is literally the glue that holds our defense together.
He definitely chose the wrong time to roll his ankle...
OT: This is why I'm so invested to see how we do against Illinois this weekend. If he is back to 100%, I would like to see a defense that doesn't allow easy lay-up all game long. Illinois doesn't have a dangerous post man or anyone that should over power Morgan, so I think this could be the game to finally find our defense again.

|42 weeks 2 days ago||This||
No way could I stand watching MSU be the outright B1G Champs.
|42 weeks 2 days ago||I understand the whole root for State thing...||
But....Imagine the scenario that MSU does beat IU (only because we were all rooting for it to happen), and then they hold court against Wisconsin (which they should), and somehow go into Columbus and beat ohio.
Could we live with ourselves knowing that we rooted for lil bro, and that led them down the path to an outright Big Ten Regular Season Champs?
I know I can't.
So my rooting interest will be to 4)eff state, and hope they lose to IU (and Wisconsin and ohio), and just become a really really big Gopher fan when they play IU.

My guy to have a big game tonight is GR3.
Michigan wins 75-59
|45 weeks 2 days ago||I agree 100%||
We lost Novak, Smotrycz, and Douglass. Combined they accounted for 24.4 ppg. Coming back in just Burke and Hardaway Jr was 29.4 ppg. Yes, we lost leadership and intensity with Stu and Zach, but bringing in a, dare I say "elite", freshman class, we definitely made up for lost goods. Not to mention getting a healthy Horford for this year as well.
|45 weeks 3 days ago||I hear||
I hear Reuben Foster is still looking for a school next year. Talk about a surpise committ. No visit, no problem. Maybe Poggi is using this Alabama rumour to go find Foster and telling him to go to Michigan. I don't know if Foster is visiting Auburn right now, but if that's the case, Poggi could very well be on the recruiting trail for his friend, Mr. Reuben Foster.
Getting Foster would mean our reactions on here would turn to:
Derrick Green who?
Just kidding, but seriously. That would, and I quote Mr. Green, "Shock the World".
|45 weeks 3 days ago||Trap game?||
I don't get the whole trap game thing here. Yes, a lot is at stake with this game (potential #1 ranking, staying on top of the B1G, not dropping games against weaker teams, etc), but that's all a factor any game during conference play.
A trap game, to me, is a game that is right before or after an emotional/big game. Our win at home over Purdue does not count as a big or emotional win, and our next game is home against NW, which is probably not something any of the players or coaches are looking ahead to.
The teams focus is on the game at hand. Definitely not a trap game in my book. Our next game, at home against NW, is a trap game because I assume the focus during practice will be towards handling IU at Assembly.
Just my two cents.
|45 weeks 5 days ago||Did anyone else notice?||
For about 3 minutes of the game (I believe it was the 1st half), our lineup was:
This is when Purdue had Hammons and their big white guy Travis Carroll (6'9'') out there. Anyone think that this was to see how a 2-big offense would work, if say we need to use it frequently against MSU and/or Wisconsin?
I can't remember how they did, but I think Morgan blew by Hammons for a lay-up.
|45 weeks 6 days ago||I follow||
All the Michigan commits, and the hopeful commits. I unfollow all the players that don't commit to Michigan.
For those that are with Michigan, I give out a weekly Go Blue, Team 134, B1G Champs, etc. And when I see them arguing to haters (mostly about Brady Hoke's weight), I just tell them to forget about them and Go Blue.
But mostly, it's all Go Blue coming from this guy (who is still in college, so it's not too creepy that I'm tweeting these kids).
|45 weeks 6 days ago||Michigan winning in another way||
Michigan is currently in 4th place (Behind Bama, A&M, and Oregon), but Notre Dame and ohio are battling for 8th. That should put a smile on everyone's face.
|46 weeks 1 day ago||As if||
As if Morgan start/ McGary off the bench needed another vote, I will gladly do the honors. Start the smart experience vet, and let the kid run wild off the bench..."release the hounds" should be the chant when Spike, LeVert, and McGary are in at the same time.
|46 weeks 5 days ago||That's funny you bring that up.||
Roundtree posted this little guy on twitter the other day:
|46 weeks 5 days ago||I'm surprised||
That THJ looks so inept dribbling the ball in open space, because we all know that his dad was Mr. Crossover himself. You would have thought some of that would have been passed down, no?
|46 weeks 6 days ago||Coincidence...||
Derrick Green: Auburn, Michigan, Tennessee
Reuben Foster: Alabama, Auburn, Washington, Georgia, etc...
Henry Poggi: Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Tennessee, etc...
David Dawson: Alabama, Michigan, Tennessee
Dawson is known to have helped Green with his decision.
Poggi is known to have tried to help Foster with his decision.
Both Green and Foster visited Auburn on the same day, 9/1/2012
Bold Prediction: The day after Green commits, Foster, out of nowhere, commits to Michigan.
*One can dream*

How Henry Poggi is doing with his recruiting of Reuben Foster...
