OP, I don't know what your space limitations are but when I was researching breeds I learned that rescue greyhounds handle being crated very well because that is how they are handled. They are kept in a crate except for when racing or training and are accustomed to it and prefer to be crated even after adoption.
This is only research so maybe someone who has a rescue greyhound will tell you differently.
|14 hours 48 min ago||Rescue Dog Here||
It was a big decision for our family and I didn't want to get involved with a puppy mill. Our dog came from a rescue organization that makes sure their animals are housebroken, socialized, neutered, and know some basic commands before they are sent to their "forever home".
I picked up the dog out by Pittsburgh but she originally came from Kentucky and was picked up the day before she was to be put down. She was only 8 months old and had already been through a really crappy life. Her front leg was broken when she came from Kentucky and speculation was that she had been thrown from a car window since that is the way pups frequently break their front legs.
We had some minor adjusting issues but overall it was a fairly smooth transition.
Last spring she started to favor one leg and not knowing much about the dog, she's a lab mix, I assumed the worst since hip problems are very common in labs and she had just turned 6. My wife took her to the vet and was told rest, ice, then moderate exercise. She didn't get better.
This spring I took her for her annual checkup since I am more forceful as a consumer. It took the vet all of 30 seconds to check her kneee and he diagnosed a torn cruciate, ACL in humans. My dog had suffered with that injury for almost a year!
I found a animal hospital that does several of these surgeries a month and we had it repaired. I learned along the way that this is the #1 surgery for dogs. I never spent that much on an animal before, but she's family so there was no question about doing it. The surgeon said her other was partially torn and implied that it was from favoring it for so long.
We've changed vets since all this.
She had surgery March 20 and the total rehab is 16 weeks. She's not supposed to be offleash now but I allow her to be in the backyard with me off leash. First few weeks were really rough. We're only halfway through rehab but she already walks better than she did presurgery.
Here's what she looked like the day after she came home from surgery. LOTS of drugs but happy to be home.

JB's stuff is too hard to learn and execute for a kid coming out of high school. A one-and-done would do better to look elsewhere. That's not sour grapes just how I don't think a one-and-done will flourish in JB's system.
Sucks for all those who count stars as recruiting wins but I'd rather have actual wins on the court.

JB and Michigan honored their commitment to Austin. I believe that after giving it his best Austin is putting the team ahead of himself. He is an inspiring young man. He's already made the world a better place and I think he will continue to do that in a different capacity.
|2 weeks 13 hours ago||JB's system isn't for 1st year players||
I can't think of any that were stars their 1st year, except McGary who wasn't a guard. Even that guy who was the best player in college basketball didn't win it until his second year. There's a steep learning curve moreso than a lot of schools.
I think if he comes it will be to compete for a starting job but understanding it may not happen.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||First time & last time||
I started experimenting with it in HS. It was actually easier to get than alcohol but I lived in a college town. My buddy and I scored our 1st baggie and went to the river to enjoy it. We had both tried it before but this was the 1st time we were gonna smoke a lot.
We played with Roman Candles and had a generally great time until we got REALLY hungry. My mother was still at work so we made a commando run to my house, raided the fridge, and went up to my room to listen to Pink Floyd.
The next morning my mother comments we must have been really hungry since we pretty much emptied the fridge. Then she asks if I want to go driving (I had just gotten my permit). I was still feeling high from the night before so technically the first time I drove I was intoxicated. I know, bad idea but I didn't have much choice.
By 20 I gave up on it and moved on with life. I don't see it as good or bad. Many of the people I toked with also moved on but a few haven't and haven't grown up yet either. Big boy responsibilities and the law keep me from celebrating this holiday.

This is the ultimate endgame. when the judge broke up ma bell into the babies it was B'rer Rabbit begging not to be thrown into the briar patch. It allowed the regional bells flexibility and allowed to successful ones to remerge without all the accounting gimmics. This is how Verizon was born from NYNEX and Bell Atlantic merging.
The part that I find disconcerting as someone who works in telecom is that right now there is a huge pipe available via FIOs but what to fill it with?
Netflix has more customers for streaming that less than $10/mo. Appointment television is dying and live sports are the only reason left for a cable provider between the consumer and producer.
Bandwidth is a commodity and with apps like Kodi/XBMC one doesn't necessarily need a TV provider. I am looking very hard at the sling offering from Dish for $20/month coupled with Kodi as the end of my TV provider.

What finally ended his NFL career was the missed block that got Steve Young nearly killed. Going from memory Young never played another snap, the niners went on to suck until Harbaugh arrived, and the NFL started paying cursory attention to predraft "warning signs".

My wife wanted to go to the baseball game and out to dinner for her birthday. I'm a lucky guy.
It was a beautiful day, a beautiful stadium, and about 80% of the seats were empty. They are running a promotion coming up for $5 and a student ID you get in to the game and access to a unlimited buffet. I don't know if it's a PSU thing, northern thing, or baseball just has no support.
It was really neat to see some of the players that were freshmen when I last took my son out there playing as seniors now. The team seems to be in flux with no go-to guy at the moment but there is a few that I can see taking over that role as they mature.
I miss seeing Crank play.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||JB's system isn't for 1st year players||
We just saw it take 3/4 of a season for the current crop of freshman to pick it up. It's not your average HS offense. I don't think a kid can come in and be a star his 1st year. Well, maybe a true 5 that only has to run the floor, set screens, get rebounds, and attack the basket ala McGary.
That's why I don't see Brown coming.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||No matter how much you save it won't be enough||
We've been saving for both of my kids in 529's for 10+ years now. The pace of college inflation has far outpaced my contributions and returns in those 529's. My son graduates in June and we've been discussing his options.
He was accepted to George Mason and really wants to go there because of the location. I thought out of state tuition was brutal until I saw in-state at PSU was very close to the same. We discussed his options and he is weighing them right now. I think, and I believe he is leaning towards, working for a year then going to school would be good for him.
He is a young graduate (turns 18 and graduates same day) and has some maturing to do before he goes to school, imho. I don't think he'd take the same route as MGrow's 22yo but he also never had to work hard for anything. I think a year of a crappy job will help him to appreciate why he's going and the expense.
Anyway, I'm sorry I got off subject. We're in 529's and I like that the beneficiary can be changed. So, if mine decides to become a male exotic dancer I can easily switch the benificiary to my daughter or even a grandchild if that should happen sooner rather than later.

But, I've read the Texas AD is very DB-like and will make a DB-like hire instead of the best hire.
Smart is a one trick pony and now that teams have seen that press enough it isn't as daunting.

I think Texas will be a plum job. The historic football program is down right now so the buzz generated by a good basketball will be readily embraced. Almost like what Michigan went through with JB's hiring.
I looked at the list of underachieving coaches. Jamie Dixon along with Barnes are two coaches to never take in the tournament and stats bear it out. I talked myself into Villanova this year and paid for it. I see Jay Wright deservedly on there with the other two.

If JB can make it work with a 6'4" power forward and a 6'7" center I trust he can make this work. To me it just looks like a backup date to the prom in case they whiff on everyone else.
Could also be Levert is leaving and they want another body in the rotation in case of injury. Even though JB never loses kids to the draft or injury, right?

This year was a bit of a bummer and seemed to be a step back. But next year will certainly be two steps forward since they all have a year of experience of playing against high level competition. As a basketball junkie I have loved watching these kids grow into Division 1 basketball players. All the coaches did a great job.

My son graduates this year. I would be appalled if he were involved in something like this. As his parent, I hope that his mother and I have done enough so that he could understand this is just a very-very bad idea. IF he happens to find a girl foolish enough to show her girlie parts to him he best keep his mouth shut about it as it should only be between him and her.
I also have a daughter who is 10. Her mother and I will do everything in our power to make her understand that she shouldn't put herself in those situations to begin with before she is off on her own. This isn't about blaming the victim or any of that bullcrap that gets thrown out when someone questions what the victim was doing. Just questioning the thought process of all involved.
This is about young adults being dumbasses and if they didn't know any better than their parents are dumbasses too.

I figured it was over when, despite the hype at the Senior Bowl, he was nowhere to be found in the game stats.
|7 weeks 4 days ago||Lots of Growth||
I only saw this team in person once this year. It was early at PSU. When I posted my scouting/observations one of the biggest things that stood out was Rahk and to a larger extent, Dawkins, not knowing the playbook.
At times they both looked lost but at that time Rank was clearly ahead of Dawkins in terms of knowing what to do in JB's system. As the year progressed they both made major advances because the team needed them to do it. I wonder if we saw the sophomore jump while they were playing as freshman?
I still don't know what to think about Chatman. Too many times he gets lost on defense. I think more than anyone he needed a redshirt.
The team my son's team just lost to in the PIAA-A sweet 16 has a kid helping who was on the roster last year and who has signed with PSU. Per another coach who was scouting, he is going to prep school for a year because PSU wanted him to play against higher level and bigger competition.
I'm guessing that is the majority of Chatman's problems as well since he came from a smaller school.
|7 weeks 4 days ago||Scalping Laws are Stupid||
The enforcement is so arbitrary there may as well be no law anyway.
Look at it from a stadium perspective. They just want to sell seats and don't give a crap who is in them. Season ticket holders are #1 priority and they're taken care of, student tickets are also taken care of, so really we're only discussing poor schlubs and casual fans who want to buy 1see or 2sees. Scalpers insure those tickets are available.
Seems to me scalpers shift the risk from the stadium to the scalper. By buying large blocks of available tickets the scalper is taking the risk of not being able to sell them or the price plummeting.

I think reality is that we needed him to come back this year more than he needed to come back. Not every college player can be a star at the next level. Sounds like a sweet life to me.

The women's division is extremely weak. They are already having trouble finding compelling matchups for her. The next fight will either be the 3rd matchup with someone she's beaten 2x already (Tate) or the boxer that made her (unimpressive) debut last weekend, Combs.
I watched it streaming live and it didn't freeze or skip at all. That never happens so I think the interest is already waning. At least when Silva or GSP were dominating there was enough quality in the division to make the fights interesting to watch.

|11 weeks 4 days ago||I stand corrected||
I assumed 40min was same as /game. I still have no problem with keeping players eligible for end of game rather than winning 1st half.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||It's not his offense that is troubling||
His defense is spectacularly bad. The majority of the time down the court he still, at this point in the season, doesn't know who to guard or where to go! The other freshman are now pointing it out to him. So, everyone on the court has to guard 1-1/2 people nearly every trip down because Chatman doesn't know what to do.
If anything he reminds me of the backup PG on my sons team. The coaches want him to play the point when the starter is subbed out but it is obvious he doesn't know the plays. He's a Jr and in line to be the starter next year because of graduation. When he's on the floor with the other starters the team is disjointed and out of sync.
I asked my son what he looks like in practice. He said he's fine there because they know the sets and run them one or two at a time against a known defense.
Maybe like OP says, Chatman looks good in practice?
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Chatman is still awful||
I missed the opening tip but saw him playing early. Did he start?
I also saw his typical run back and play defense which consists of running in a circle near the foul line looking for someone to guard. Last night I believe it was Rahk who pointed where to go, but Illinois also saw the open man at the block for an easy layup.
He may have the physical tools to play at this level but I am not seeing a player that has grown at all during the season. He is a defensive liability and his offense isn't good enough to cancel out his negatives...not even close. I didn't watch much Lonergan but what I remember was enough that if I were JB I'd seriously consider putting him ahead of Chatman in the rotation.
Does anyone do UFR's anymore for basketball?

|11 weeks 5 days ago||LL baseball =NCAA or worse.||
I work in Williamsport, coached LL, and was a league president. LL is every bit as disgusting as the NCAA. Only focusing on the LLWS for a minute...
These kids travel from all over the world to play in a tournament televised on ESPN/ABC who pay a lot of money for it. They also sell all kinds of deals to be the Official XXX of Little League baseball. Where does the money go? LL, unlike the NCAA, is not even making an effort to get the parents here! Last year the Korean team onlynhad one parent present because the rest could not afford the trip. Fortunately they were "adopted" by the local Korean community.
Where does the money go? Despite what you hear on TV the local population isn't overly enamoured with LL. When Carl Stotz started it LL really was about the kids. In the beginning it was held here in Williamsport. After a few years it was realized that there was a ton of $ to be made and and eventually LL moved across the river to "The Palace" in South Williamsport, it's present location.
Stotz quit/got booted from the organization he started because it had been taken over by those who saw $. He came back over to Williamsport and started Original Little League on the same field as the original incarnation. By then it was too late since what he had built became the money machine you are familiar with today. Original League still exists but it's just another small local league.
There is no way that LL was unaware of the address issue. When you are presenting rosters you have to provide several documents that establish residency at the given address. You also have to show on a map the location of that residence within your league boundary. This happens multiple times during the process from local league all the way to the LLWS.
I have my own theory as to why this was allowed to happen but I'll keep my speculation out of this discussion.

|12 weeks 4 days ago||It's his defense that is the biggest liability||
Every player goes through stretches where they don't want to shoot. It happens to all of them but it afflicts younger players who don't have confidence even more.
What I am most troubled with is his consistently poor defense. It was glaringly obvious last night. I had to walk away from the TV late in the 1st half when bit on a terrible fake going right and his man had an easy uncontested layup right down the middle from the foul line.
It cannot be fun for other defenders to be stuck guarding 1-1/2 players the whole game. I sure hope DJ Wilson doesn't transfer and can play defense.

BoB was hired after a complete clusterfuk of biblical proportion. Franklin was hired in 2014 after BoB completely outperformed expectations (and beat Michigan).
People also seem to forget that Meyer and staff had some kind of NCAA waiver so that OSU could essentially have 2 coaching staffs for a period of time. Fickel & Co handled bowl preparation and Meyer could focus exclusively on recruiting AFTER he was a color analyst for many games featuring schools he would play or in areas he would pluck players from.

Only played 2 games as a sophomore and didn't hit well either. Has size for 3b but can't hit and has a questionable arm.
For baseball, and by extension football, I would place him at the D2 level but honestly even a D2 pitcher should throw harder than that.

What are they supposed to do, not recruit? I think they are "Attacking the Day" as if they were recruiting the whole season just doing it in a compressed timeframe. If they would have offered in June they are going to offer in January.
They will make their best effort and after NSD go after next year's class with the same ferocity.
|13 weeks 6 days ago||Doesn't know what he wants to do?||
I don't believe in spending $30k/yr to discover what a kid wants to do. My son is graduating in June and was all over the place with what he wants to do...Special Ed to Business to whatever. I strongly suggested he take a year to actually work fulltime, save money, and experience life then in a year he can make that decision. The money I have saved for his education will still be there.
He sent in a few applications to places and got accepted with generous scholarships as well as one school offering him the chance to play baseball (another thing he's not sure if he wants to continue after HS!). I told him that if he's at all serious about going to those schools he needs to have a conversation with the admissions people to keep that door open in the future.
Sorry OP, it didn't answer your question but I can't speak to that. I just know too many recent graduates with a boatload of debt who aren't even sure what they want to do.

People forget GR3's ability to be the Invisible Man for long stretches including over entire games.
|13 weeks 6 days ago||Against Wisconsin?||
All I saw was a player frequently out of position...in basic zone...who looked lost to the point he was going to gravitate to the first player that caught his attention. There was a point I in the late stages of that game where he was completely on the wrong side not the court which resulted in the Wisconsin player having a 3 with no defender in the same zip code. 3pts
Then in OT he makes a reach foul because,again, he's so badly out of position he can't possibly recover. 2pts
That's 5 points at critical times against a team Michigan had almost zero margin of error available if they were going to pull it out.
Maybe he just looks lost because he is lost? I saw mention that he came from a small school league. Being athletic works against lower competition but big-time basketball has a lot of moving parts and I don't see him adapting at all. A redshirt may have helped but that's gone now.
|14 weeks 1 day ago||That's his job||
A guy at work kept on me until I commented today. I really don't care about NFL so I don't have a horse in this race.
I explained that a long time ago I wanted to be a team engineer on a race team. As part of that profession it is the engineer's job to know what is and is not specified in the rules and how to work within them while getting bloody close to the edge.
I can very easily believe that TB prefers to throw low pressure ball. If the spec is 12.5 to 13.5 or something like that, the job of those assistants is to make sure the balls are certified at 12.5 not 12.6 or 12.4 but EXACTLY 12.5 full well knowing that once they are in the cold the pressure will drop. It's not rocket science.
In racing, the teams that win week in and week out are the ones that are the most prepared just like in sports. If shaving 3 threads off a bolt will cut laptime someone is going to do it.
Without a doubt the Patriots are one of the most prepared teams in the NFL. I'm not a fan and even I know that. I'm sure very little is left up to chance and someone is well aware of all the rules and how to walk right up to the edge of them. How else could that team keep winning at the standard they set with Tom Brady and a bunch of wierd guys?
|14 weeks 3 days ago||I hate singling out kids for bad reasons but...||
Chatman cost that game last night. He was so out of position on an open 3 near the end of regulation he wasn't even on the same side of the floor as the shooter. In OT, silly meaningless foul put them at the line for 2 points. Margin of error was too small for things like that.
Give JB credit, he immediately pulled him off the court and made a sub.
Rock is gonna be a star!

MGoFeed on Twitter is the most useful tool I've found. Have updates sent to your phone via text. Any new thread on here is a clickable text. No need to F5 or keep checking here unless it's something you need to read.
I started using the tool during the coaching search and didn't turn it off. I'd guess4-6 texts an hour unless things are happening then more. It also made me appreciate the work the Mods do to clear the clutter since every new thread shows up on the feed but a good deal are gone before I log on.

There was a game last season when Gardner was just pitiful bad. Morris was warming up on the sidelines and looked ready to go in next series. The game was not in doubt. Next series Gardner goes in and Morris sits.
Post game presser..."Well ya know, Devin practiced hard all week and we wanted to give him the chance, as a Senior, to finish the game"
It wasn't about who gave them the better opportunity to come back or get Morris live reps.

The reason schools like Alabama and Oklahoma were so strong back in the day was because there was no limit. Switzer still jokes about having 3 Heisman-quality running backs on scholarship just so Texas couldn't get any of them.
If that happens St Sabans medical center closes and they sign 50 kids every year. Same with the rest of the SEC.

I recently bought 2 of the Amazon FireTV sticks and they are fantastic! ESPN looks as good on the kitchen tv as it does over satellite. There is no official B10 app yet, but you can side load any android app. The only problem is if yuou need a touchscreen to control it but a $20 wireless keyboard gets around that if you Google a how-to.
The only thing you'd still be lacking is the login info but I'm sure a friend could hook you up with that.
|14 weeks 6 days ago||Look out, they're getting better!||
When I saw this team live a few weeks ago the thing that had me dumbfounded was that some of the players obviously didn't know the plays yet. Dawkins stood out the most for being out of position or confused about what to do. The coaches even told the veterans they had to help.
I didn't get to watch last night's game yet since I was at my son's game. But, this last weekend I saw visible improvement in both Dawkins and Rock. I don't know if JB has shrunk the playbook or it has just taken this long but something is happening with the young guys.
Looking back on previous seasons I think it happened right around now as well for the young guys. Caris wasn't an immediate player and had to burn his redshirt, for example. I think it's probably too late for the NCAA but the NIT is within reach. Unless we run into a situation like a few years ago except Turner* doesn't make the half court shot this time.
*Obviously it wouldn't be Turner since he's long gone.
|15 weeks 21 hours ago||They've always been delusional||
I live here and have always disliked the cult of personality that was Penn State football. I begrudgingly had respect for them because they never cheated.
My uncle got his undergrad at Penn State and MS from Michigan. I remember visiting him at Michigan when I was very young and I was hooked. My parents' ugly divorce prevented me from having the $$ to attend Michigan but that is where my heart remained. My father drives a 58 corvette that was my college money and I have a degree from PSU. Strange how that worked out.
Anyway, I am willing to let the legal system run its course and hope that the individuals responsible get a truly deserved punishment. What I do find locally is that the lunatic fringe who is obsessed with JoePa is mostly the 60+ demographic. Younger fans just don't seem to care about the JoePa records and want to put it in the past. To them that era is gone.
I understand a strong PSU is good for the BigTen. I'll never be a fan but I do find myself not hating them any longer. I'm ready to go back to Michigan whipping their ass regularly. They were 2-10 when I graduated and I loved wearing my swag.

I'd like to see the Big Ten run something congratulating both of them on making it to the biggest stage. They could run it on Sports Center until the SB. It would certainly be a boost to recruiting and a step to counter SEC bias.

Farley in the gay Budweiser commercial set to VanHalen's Pretty Girls would have to be in my top 5. Most anything Farley but maybe it's just because that's when I watched it.

DJ Wilson is the one that I think may transfer. Lots of west coast offers before he committed to Michigan.

Rock, that's the coaches called him on the floor, seem to be getting a good command of the offense. I only noticed a few times that the coaches or other starters needed to direct him. More importantly, he played adequate defense and was disruptive in the 1-3-1.
When Dawkins gets a better grasp we will actually have depth again.
On a downer, Donnal is softer than a fluffy pillow. I think at this point Max contributes more with his time on the floor and 5 fouls.

Soccer has been the next big thing since I was a kid in the 70's. I saw a study that the majority of soccer ratings on TV are coming from a growing immigrant population rather than increased popularity among those born in the US.
I am seeing Lacrosse catching on here as it spreads out from New England. I think it's played on the same field as soccer so it fits multi use facilities.
|16 weeks 1 hour ago||Lack of inside game||
Everyone knows there is no threat inside and it doesn't require double teams or special planning to shut it down. Defensively teams can focus on the shooters now and there is no longer open 3-bombs like previous years.

Who is the leader on this team? I don't see one and without a leader to challenge his peers in a way that the coaches cannot the team will continue to flounder.

Unfortunately as acknowledged by FOIA the NCAA had no jurisdiction in the matter and was looking to stay ahead of some very bad press. This affair will be no different than Bonds having the home run title. There will always be a well deserved asterisk if the wins are restored.

Since it is geographically in the middle of the state it's supposed to serve for anyone that doesn't want to drive to Pittsburgh or Philadelphia for an event. It's really a horrible arena. The sound for concerts is terrible and the atmosphere for sports is more like a funeral home. To give you an idea how big it is, when my son was really young I took him to see monster trucks there because little boys LOVE monster trucks.
I go there occasionally not to see PSU but whomever they are playing. We go to more basketball games at Bucknell which has an arena that is pretty much the same as the lower bowl of the BJC without the upper deck and is mostly sold out for all games. Of course, the product on the court is generally better too.
They wanted a big shiny arena and the got one. It's just not good for very much.

This is the first I've seen Michigan Basketball in person in a few years. These are the things that stood out...
I think all of the struggles this season are because of the youth (duh!). They will get better as the season goes on but this is an NIT team this season. I think they should make a huge leap next year as I don't think the draft is going to clean the roster after the season.
*My son's team beat their league rivals 60-35 last night. Had to mention that since he couldn't come with us.

Rec Hall was a smaller venue but it fit the amount of fans that go to PSU basketball games. It's better to have unmet demand than excess capacity when trying to generate buzz. They did play a few games at Rec Hall recently and I wonder if they are exploring a return?
The crowd last night was probably close to 50/50 Maize&Blue/Lions. I scored my tickets over the weekend. The lady that sat next to my wife was reading a magazine. Talking to her made it clear to me that PSU basketball isn't an event so much as something to do. We were in the section that should have been full of donors. Instead the fans behind and to my left were all Michigan people. The group in front of us was just basketball fans not really committed to either team.

I've messed with this stuff for a long time as well. I bought a FireTV stick for my daughter at Christmas time and I've been amazed by the quality. I have been using a chromestick and the fire just blows it away.
Watching ESPN on it vs the HD signal via satellite is indistinguishable. The only hangup is the apps right now. I tried side loading B102Go but cannot use it because it requires a touchscreen to navigate. B10Network would be wise to fix this small issue and roll out an app that works on the FireTV stick.
|17 weeks 2 days ago||I was working on a predictive model||
When TomVH was still here I was working on a predictive model based on geography, star ranking, and coaching record. After he left I quit fine tuning it but I was up to ~80% accuracy when given the top 5 schools.
The most startling thing at the time was that 5-star players generally stay close to home and 3/4-star players moved the most. In a way I suppose it explains why schools in states with little instate talent MUST have coaching staffs good at developing talent.
I was recently thinking about picking up the project again as things have slowed down at work and I can work on the spreadsheets so it looks like I'm doing productive work.

|17 weeks 5 days ago||You forgot a few||
TCU looked pretty darn dominant in their bowl game and Patterson has shown he is willing to embrace change. They are in the fertile recruiting state of Texas and the marquee program in that state is down.
Oregon just seems to reload every year and if anything the are better since their DC retired last year.
USC has enough starting talent to beat anyone but no depth just because of sanctions. Sark is a wildcard right now because we don't know if he's legit or another Kiffin.
Michigan is only in the discussion because this is a Michigan board and Michigan hired a rock star coach. No doubt the team will be better but sensible people don't have a team that didn't even make a bowl in the discussion of next year's power teams.

Seriously, I've never accepted a job and told my new employer, "I'm only going to be here a few years until I'm bored, looking for a new challenge, or sick of dealing with your shit" Nobody says it's temporary.
Having said that, I think JH's assistant hires are critical because if he does bolt after a few years he's shown that someone on his staff will be ready, willing, and able to keep moving forward with the foundation put down in JH's time here.
And if he does stay that would be even better as he sends asistants off to other teams to kick more ass building his legacy as a great coach.
|17 weeks 6 days ago||Rooting for the Big Ten||
I'll hold my nose and try not to vomit but winning games is good for the Big Ten. I want to see a final of tOSU and Oregon with the Ducks running them out of the building in the 1st qtr. My wife is a Ducks fan so that would be just fine with her as well.
Even sweeter to beat Sparty and tOSU when they are full of pride.
The Harbaugh hiring and postseason success only helps the BigTen brand *Brandoned* which will get more high level recruits interested. More bowl wins means more teams ranked higher in the pre and early season polls and unless they crater finishing higher in the final rankings as well.
SEC brand is built on post season and wild over rankings to start the season. Remember South Carolina and Texas A&M rankings to start last season? I'd rather have Minnesota and Rutgers wildly over ranked and the talking heads talking about the resurgent BigTen than another year of pitiful bowl performances.

UA has now passed Rebok and is the #2 sports apparel behind Nike, although I'm not sure what metric was used. Also, the CEO of UA is committed to passing Nike for the #1 spot.
I think Michigan could get a good deal with UA. I don't know the age of the other UA contracts but if they are older it could be they just didn't have the free cash to burn at the time.
I also agree with the earlier post about kid's preference. My son is 18 and all his peer group prefers UA. Nike is losing its cool factor with the younger crowd.

I don't think college players should get paid but it's getting harder and harder to defend that position when everyone is making a gazillion dollars but them. Even my own thought process is moving from "No Way!" to "What would be a fair and equitable way for this to happen?"
Rain is over, resume celebrating.
|18 weeks 19 hours ago||Just not a good team this year||
I don't believe JB's system fits 1st year players well at all. If you watch off ball *Dakitched* you will see the younger guys don't know where to go. When they do know they still have to think. You cannot think and play the tempo JB's system requires.
This year looks to be a few steps back and a trip to the NIT. We are being shown just how spoiled we were the past few seasons. I mentioned before, Kentucky lost to Robert Morris in the NIT the year after winning the title.
It's amazingly difficult to maintain a high level of play year after year while losing kids to the draft. Even more so when you are doing things the proper way like JB.

That's how much Carroll was worth to USC early in his tenure after turning that ship around. $14M/yr was increased merchandising, donations, and increased attendance. I remember the report because at the time that was the first I had seen someone try to make an honest valuation of a good coach to a floundering college program.
This is from wiki (I know but I'm not sourcing it for a paper)..."The success of USC football under Carroll led to a sharp rise in overall athletic department revenue, growing from $38.6 million in Carroll's first season at USC to more than $76 million in 2007–08." I'm not sure if they broke the $14M number directly from that.

If there is any anger it should be directed at the athletic department which had been a clusterfuk since the mid 2000's. Without repeated ineptitude and mismanagement Michigan football would not have been reduced to the point of needing a savior.
Hackett is the one who truly has a chance to be "the savior" because he is in the position to fix the systemic damage he inherited.

JB is a fine coach who was many times "done more with less". Right now you're seeing a team on the floor that the coaches didn't expect to see until next year. It's a symptom of success.
Even Kentucky who just reloads with a pre-NBA roster every year had the same trouble. In 2012 they won the NCAA title. In 2013 they lost to Robert Morris in the post season NIT.
It's the price of having or developing talent that can be NBA picks.

Spike on several occasions was waving for the ball and not seen. *Using Hoke voice* "They didn't execute"
All night there were open shots available off the swing pass before the weak side of the zone adjusted. Instead they would just pass from player to player up top while the clock ticked down. One more quick pass as the ball moved from corner to middle would have netted layups or good looks.
Second half they started running an overload to either side of the zone and it was open except nobody was passing it to the baseline corner area and when they did it was too late. Irvin was open quite a bit off this but I did notice at times he was setting up behind the basket which takes away the shot.
They are young and they didn't execute. Those two go together. The team I saw last night is a bubble or NIT team.

How many of those police blotter problems are players transferring in? Yes, Michigan has had more than enough but it's not like the door is open to other coach's problems if the kid has enough talent.

This is the ad at the top of the page. Quite appropriate.
|21 weeks 1 day ago||Count (Bob) Stoops Out as Well||
The Shenanigans Factor that eliminates Miles also eliminates him. Seems that every police blotter or dismissed player with some talent winds up on the Oklahoma roster. Kellen Jones, DGB, Dalton Rodriguez, to name just a few.
I'm sure I could come up with more on Google but that's enough to convince me that even if he was open to it there's too much Shenanigans.
|21 weeks 2 days ago||Reality Sucks||
If it's not going to be an A list guy then I would be more comfortable handing the reigns to Nuss then getting another MAC coach, a crappy retread, or someone elses's unproven coordinator. M is already going to be paying him and before he worked under Hoke he was on the hot coordinator list and was successful at every stop before AA.
He's certainly not my first choice but I think of the last guy who was hot and successful before he came to AA and didn't pan out. He's now successful at his next stop.

PSU can't even draw for home games and I don't think Rutgers students will show for one-and-done. Maryland may if they are ranked otherwise driving up in winter sucks.
I'm 2-ish hours away and may consider depending on winter weather.

"The gist of the concern here is it may take Mullen four years to build a winner, by which time Michigan will have found enough reasons to run him out of town like we did the last two dudes."
I see him more as a hot coach riding a RS Jr Qb who is playing great. As I coach I think he's Sumlin with Manziel. I don't dislike the guy but I really do think Michigan should strive to do better with this hire. I still don't think personality stops him from going to Fla if Fla really thought he was the guy to take them back to dominance and I don't think Nebraska hires Mike Riley if Mullen is a vastly superior coach.
We hired a coach with a better history of winning and ran him out after 3 years then ran a perfect cultural fit out after 4 because he couldn't win games. Michigan is already into ND territory with coaching carousel. This one MUST be right and I personally don't see Mullen as that guy.

I've used the mgoblog more this week than ever. I recently switched to a Windows Phone however and there isn't a version for that. I keep finding WiFi an using my tablet.
I hope Brian is selling ads based on visits these next few weeks. If so, he could create the MGoBlog Offensive Coordinator Endowment.

Hackett also said he would be the one to make the hire. Schlissel had authorized him to do it.
|21 weeks 5 days ago||UCLA is a state school||
State schools in Cali are very limited in what they are able to pay coaches, coordinators, and assistants. The previous coach at UCLA made mention of this on Sirius because he had to compete against USC which has basically bottomless pockets.
If this is all true JMJr may be looking for greener pastures for him and his staff ala Bielema or he's going to be repeatedly poached for assistants.
I think JMJr is only pulling in ~2m/yr currently. My concern would be as someone other than Harbaugh(s) or Miles would he be welcomed with open arms?

Would this make Michigan the PAC12 minor league just like West Va was for Michigan a few years ago? I hope Michigan football hasn't sunk that far.

Mora should have been the hire last time. I don't know if Del Rio is in the mix. USC got Herbied or he would have gone there instead of Kiffen.

"Many men have chosen misery over happiness and dreams"
A very close friend of mine is the most talented musician I have ever personally been around. While away at music school he had several offers to tour with very recognizable acts and some studio gigs. His girlfriend at the time didn't want to move so he declined them all.
After school they got married then divorced after a few years. He's still stuck in dinkyville playing out and giving lessons.
Guys sometimes make really poor or illogical decisions for their spouse.

Personalities like JH and other top dogs aren't motivated by money so much as power. He's already made enough to be comfortable his whole life and his children and children's children will never have a need.
It's a power struggle in SF that has him in play right now. His next employer will need to add power and authority to his compensation package.

I'm not in the Pay the Players $$ camp, but who makes up the product on the field? If college coaches are really going to start getting $8M/yr then I cannot fathom why a kid who is one injury away from never playing again...or worse...should be only getting "cost of attendance"
I'm also disturbed with AD's getting obscene pay packages for essentially shifting around piles of someone else's money.
However looking at it in Drucker terms* the players are probably at or near $100000k in terms of compensation so maybe $8M is fair?
*Drucker felt that fair compensation was 20x the lowest pay of the organization. $8M/85 schollies/20=$94117.

4.5M base salary

When Hackett stressed morals and values were as important as win repeatedly in the presser I took that to mean Miles would not be considered. Too much baggage. I'm actually pro-Miles but I don't see it now.
|22 weeks 17 hours ago||Very Impressed||
From his comment about giving a coach time to seeing a successful coach as the intersection of winning and personal development to firing being a solemn ceremony this is a man that 'gets it' and I can understand why he was successful in the real world.
When he made the comment about a decision that is going to change someone's life forever it really showed me that he understands. I also liked his thoughts about wishing he had more time to guide Hoke in areas that needed improvement.
I would be very surprised if Les is a candidate with this AD but I think we'll all be OK with whomever he hires. This is not DB's search for a yes man with Michigan ties.

And had there been any indication that things had improved even a little after last season?
The bowl debacle could be explained away by a new Qb, but what about ND and Utah? It was clear after Utah change was coming. Remember Corso called Michigan for 4 wins early in the season? Everybody on here was pissed. Michigan won 5.
Everyone knew this season was a train wreck early except the AD and the koolaide club.

Wasn't the only reason for keeping Hoke after Utah to not ruin recruiting? How well has that worked?
|22 weeks 1 day ago||Top Choices||
Top choices aren't available right now whether the vacancy is official or not. Everyone knows there is a vacancy.
If they were gonna cut him loose early it should have been done during the season. I thought the Utah game is when it should have happened. They could have named an interim and had just as much of a disappointing season the fired the whole staff at the end of the season.
That they have not dropped the hammer makes me think good things are happening. Maybe they keep Hoke until January then hire/fire in a few hours? Maybe they cut hjim loose Dec31 to give him a $1M handshake?
Either way, the next coach is not available to accept at this time so there's no reason cut him loose except to make a bunch of bloggers happy.
|22 weeks 2 days ago||Why is that?||
Green runs very soft for a big man. Seems to be brought down with very little contact.
|22 weeks 2 days ago||Timing||
BoB was smart enough to get out and get paid before sanctions hit. Their OLine is going to be every bit as bad as the recent Michigan ones in the coming years. You can already see Hackenberg getting worn down from being repeatedly clobbered just as Gardner was by his final year.

Retired coaches do quite will running an occasional clinic.

He said Michigan would only win 4 games this year. I think Michigan already had 2 W's. We were all pissed at the time.
He was only off by 1 game.
|22 weeks 3 days ago||Long List||
Hopefully Hackett has a list with 20 to 25 names to consider for the next coach including the current coach. With outside input he will whittle that list down to just a few names that are realistic to be the next coach at Michigan and successful.
I believe there are 5 to 10 coaches that could be very successful at Michigan. I hope those names are on his final list and he does everything in his power to make sure one of them is on the sideline next year.

Michigan either makes no halftime adjustments or makes the wrong ones. They can hang or even lead in the first half but clearly get out coached the second half.

I looks like a bowling alley and on TV the court doesn't even look full size.
I was hoping they would go back to Puerto Rico.
|22 weeks 4 days ago||Why do we think that they will cut him loose in Dec/Jan?||
I see parallels between the SF/Harbaugh situation and SD/Shottenheimer a few years ago. Shottenheimer took over a crap team in '02, was COY in '04, won the AFC West in '04 & '06. Spanos, the GM, fired him February 12, 2007 because of a horrible working relationship.
If this is personal I could certainly see a GM waiting until NSD before cutting his coach loose if he thinks he's going to go back to the NCAA.
|22 weeks 4 days ago||Reminds me of my son's HS football team||
We aren't from here but I quickly learned that if you're not from here...you're an idiot. They may as well put a wall up around the school district because if you're an outsider they don't want your opinion or to change things.
The school district hadn't been to the football playoffs in over a decade when they hired a new coach. He turned the program around and took them to the playoffs in 3 years. Several of his players were on all area teams and were getting offers to play college ball.
He's a teacher about 45 minutes away and was commuting down after school. Several jobs in the district opened up and even though he was qualified he didn't get the job. They did go to former students or famiy.
After making the playoffs he was fired and replaced by a former coach who also has lived here his whole life. They haven't won more than 3 games in a season since. The team he went to has made the playoffs every year since except for his first.
My son says "Thank goodness they got rid of that coach. They might have won if they kept him" with sarcasm.
*my son opted to go to private school after his freshman year.
Admit it, that was a hundred times more fun than any football game this season.
Yes. What a difference a fully aware coach makes. Enough about football.
I see growth in every game for Donnal and Doyle. Has Donnal done the summer weight program yet? If not he will need to unless his plan is to be a reserve. Clearly Doyle is physically the best of those two and Max at this point.
Everytime I think JB is starting to shorten his bench MAAR and/or Dawkins show up.
So happy basketball is here!
|23 weeks 1 day ago||Villanovan Offense||
I admit I haven't watched this year except a few plays and a few games last year but Villanova's offense is a 4-out. That is the explanation why Jenkins shoots a lot of 3's. What ever player the have low will be who they think is the mismatch.
Of course I haven't done my homework so I could be as accurate as the announcers talking about JB's 1-3-1 defense.
Speaking of defense, I think Michigan will need to run a mix of man and zone vs Nova and tthey will break out some 1-2-1-1. Should be a fun game to watch if 3's are falling for Michigan.
