Seeing Schlissel's comments alongside Bowlsby's, more or less, has me wondering at the apparent tension between wanting to treat (college) athletes as employees (or at least more like them) while not wanting to treat (college) students as customers.
Wondering how we resolve this--how do we have an ath. dept. that rewards its workers while still treating everyone else as stakeholders rather than a target market?
Could the students, for example, be something like stockholders in this comparison?

“My dad, he’s a funny guy — he’s a football player, but he knows everything about every sport,” TJ said. “No matter what sport we played, he knew exactly what to say and what to do. I wouldn’t listen to him sometimes, but then I’d think about it and do it … and I’d get so much better. And he’d be like, ‘I told you.’ ”
Coach Wheatley prefers for his sons to enjoy their own high school football careers (he declined requests by The News to be interviewed for this story).

|2 years 45 weeks ago||beg to differ...||
"as if anyone gets incensed about teams that are one line off of expectations"
um...i know a whole bunch of mid-major boards that would and probably do (e.g. for sure we did over Valpo getting a 14 behind crap teams like Montana instead of the 13 they deserved), and at that end of the spectrum, it's totally justified because one line off of expectations is an exponential difference in terms of historical winning percentage:
...so yeah, we do get exercised about that one line, for obvious reasons.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||see, it's funny||

sorry, you're right. my bad.

Not saying it'll happen, but thought experiment.
Think how much you detest Nick Saban.
Try to detest him a little bit more.
...Seems impossible, right?
...Now imagine him signing Ty Wheatley Jr.

I'd like to thank my brother Wolverines for defacing Sparty last night in our honor:

I would agree with you--ten or so years ago this was a zero-chance.
But things have been opening up gradually at the NCAA--Scott Martin (ND basketball) transferred from Purdue, which cost him a year redshirt. Then he had horrible knee issues and multiple surgeries, costing him the following year. He came back and played two more, then was granted a third (this year) for a total of four years playing, spread over 6.
(In short, this is how a guy who was playing college basketball while Z-Novak was still playing high school is STILL playing college ball while Z has gone to Europe.)
EDIT: of course, he's not really "playing" for ND this minute, having had to shut his season down last month due to said knee problems.
There are other examples (Greg Tonagel, Valpo basketball, comes to mind), but you're right, usually both redshirts are really medshirts, not one of each.
Then again, ask a Sooners fan about Jason White! (If there were Houston fans, you could ask one about Case Keenum too.)
So don't give up the 'ship!

a nice sentiment at heart tho :)

i would say it'd be easy to "root for Sparty regardless of weather", since the game will be indoors.

I do hope they go all ape-poopy because the Crusaders have just beaten them.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||well eff.||

oh well it'll make it that much sweeter when valpo beats 'em.

I disagree. He is a tweeter, and here is a link to his account.
In all (or more) seriousness, I'd love to offer him too. Funny you should point that out about Illinois; I had a momentary fear earlier that he'd end up there and we'd regret it. Then I thought, "nah. he'd go to Purdue first." Not because of his dad, but because of proximity as well as former LC teammate David Yancey there too.
He played last fall listed at 6'2", 232. That's Ojemudia-size, so WDE is not out of the question, but it's also "smaller than Demens-size", he of course being 5-6 years older.
I worry that if they really wanted him they'd have offered him already.

well then i take back my upvote.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||um...||
...does the name Jeremy Clark ring a bell?
|2 years 51 weeks ago||Eh,||
Yes, that's actually exactly the problem. The reason he hasn't been offered yet (and you'd know the minute he was because he'd have accepted) is that he's too much of a tweener--not yet tall/heavy enough for a DL, even WDE, but not really "made" to be an LB either (although Lake Central moves him all over the field). It's probably a large part of why he doesn't yet have any offers, not even MAC, as of last check-in.
Kind of surprised Magnus hasn't already chimed in with the whole size thing. It's kind of like his go-to on Gelen.
Anyway, 2-time DPOY for The Region, and gunning for three, which has not yet been done. (The Illinois winner this year from the NWI Times was Nyles Morgan, interestingly.)
|2 years 51 weeks ago||Hear, hear.||
I applaud that sentiment: here's the wrap up on Gelen's undefeated season which concluded yesterday. GRII (his dad) drove up from Atlanta to see him finish what he started last year.
(The problem with wrestling is that Gelen's in the 220-lb class; he seems to project as a DE more than an LB but he's LB sized at the moment.)
But back to Brady Pallante! He's from one of the better FB programs here in SWFL--although BC is better known for sending one Heuerman to Ohio and one to ND. Brady's father, Dan, is the HC here. And we like coaches' sons, don't we? Here's the wrap on Brady's wrestling championship.
Bottom line: trust the coaches and the Heininger Certainty Principle.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||...you...DON'T?!??!||
EDIT: well, i should say, i DID, until certain posters kept putting things in their posts to get me in trouble at work, like "my Dixie wrecked" and such.

nope. it seems we didn't handle it well (not saying he's a prima donna, but maybe)
standifer withdraws his UM commit ... the comments are now gone, I don't know, but
it was ND with the admissions-related decision (and he was totally upfront about that; so it's not as if he were BSing about UM)
and act III:
We will see how this plays out with Nyles Morgan...
|3 years 8 weeks ago||...yeah||
anyone else wonder if our handling of Standifer--while an important way to handle and ultimately win the war--might have lost us this battle?
