3 weeks 5 days ago There most definitely are

There most definitely are still places in the US where coming out or being perceived as gay could lead to severe discrimination and/or violence. I graduated from U of M in 2011, and I personally know more than one person who was gay bashed in Ann Arbor during my time as a student. This includes verbal and physical assault. So yes...it is still very much an issue even in a pretty liberal college town like A2.

And let's not forget that you can still be fired based on sexual orientation in 29 states, including Michigan.

24 weeks 4 days ago I don't think Michigan is a

I don't think Michigan is a great team this year, but let's look at our four losses. Losses against the #1, #2, and #3 teams in the country, and a loss against Nebraska with a RS freshman behind center taking the first meaningful snaps of his career in a tough road environment. I think we have a better shot at this than some people might think.

25 weeks 4 days ago Weak schedule? I think ND is

Weak schedule? I think ND is overrated, but they beat Stanford, Oklahoma, and USC (yes, without Barkley, I know). I don't think you can call that a weak schedule.

43 weeks 4 days ago The players did nothing

The players did nothing wrong. They should be able to transfer wherever they want. If that happens to be to another school under sanctions, then so be it. It's their choice and they should have that right.

43 weeks 4 days ago We'll also be getting the Big

We'll also be getting the Big Ten Conference Logo on all of our jerseys, per the football team's twitter.

43 weeks 4 days ago The Yankees play the Mariners

The Yankees play the Mariners tonight, which means Ichiro will face his old team and home fans one last time. Very strange.

48 weeks 5 days ago If one of the Wisconsin/MSU

If one of the Wisconsin/MSU games wins, it has to be the first one. I know the second one technically had more on the line since it was the title game, but the first one was far more memorable to me.

However, you have to give Under the Lights the edge, and I'm trying not to be biased (although it's hard, obviously). That game had everything! An epic comeback (we were down 17 in the 3rd quarter!) and 3 touchdowns in the final 1:12, including 2 in the final 30 seconds. The first Wisky/MSU game was exciting and memorable, but Under the Lights was insanity.

1 year 1 week ago Unfortunately, I graduated in

Unfortunately, I graduated in 2011 and therefore missed UTL. Talk about a disappointment. I wish I could have been there! The 2009 ND game probably pales in comparison to those who were at UTL, but it was probably the craziest the stadium ever got while I was a student at Michigan. I remember losing my voice from screaming so loudly and everyone just going absolutely insane when Tate made that final TD pass. Such an awesome moment. So 2009 ND, 2010 triple OT Illinois, or 2008 Wisconsin were definitely some crazy, crazy moments.

What type of press has this been getting in and around Michigan? I'm curious if it's just the MGoBlog/internet fans expressing displeasure or if it's more widespread than that.

Like a lot of other people, I canceled my subscription after they increased their prices and split their DVDs and online streaming into two separate services. This just might convince me to restart my subscription.

1 year 5 weeks ago Is it not lost on the MSU

Is it not lost on the MSU faithful that for 3 of those 4 years, we were as bad as we've ever been? I'll give them last year - they beat a good team, so good for them. But honestly, the other 3? Which teams with half a pulse DIDN'T beat us during those years? They all did! I just find it funny that they think it's some huge claim to fame and represents their ascension to glory when really those were the same teams getting beaten by Toledo and barely squeaking by UMass. Congrats, Sparty. You should be so proud!

1 year 6 weeks ago Jeremy Hellickson was hit in

Jeremy Hellickson was hit in the head by a ball during batting practice prior to today's game. Supposedly he was responsive and alert, but still went to the hospital of course. Hope he's okay.

ED: Supposedly he was hit by a homerun ball while he was throwing in the bullpen, so at least it wasn't a line drive. That's good news.

Oh, and Go Tigers.

1 year 7 weeks ago If they are good enough to

If they are good enough to leave early and play in the NBA, then they'll get that money eventually. While they are in college, they get all their necessities paid for through their athletic scholarships. It's not like they're struggling to eat while they're still in school.

1 year 7 weeks ago The Rays are definitely an

The Rays are definitely an exception to the norm, if only for the fact that they have the 2nd lowest payroll and can compete (and win) in the toughest division in baseball. But how much of an exception are they really? Let's look at the 2011 payrolls for the teams that got into the postseason last year.

Tampa Bay: 29th
Texas: 13th
Yankees: 1st
Detroit: 10th
Philadelphia: 2nd
St. Louis: 11th
Milwaukee: 17th
Arizona: 25th

3 of 8 teams (~38 percent) in the postseason were in the lower half of the league in payrolls. The same percentage was true for the 2010 season. That's not as lopsided as you might think. It seems to suggest that although it is certainly harder to compete with smaller payrolls, it might not be as much of an abberation as you suggest.

http://content.usatoday.com/sportsdata/baseball/mlb/salaries/team

1 year 7 weeks ago What about the Rays? In 2011,

What about the Rays? In 2011, they had the second lowest payroll of any MLB team. They won the AL Wild Card. As of last year at least, the Orioles had the 3rd highest payroll in the AL East yet still finished dead last. (This is all according to CBSSports figures, fyi.)

Money helps teams win. There's no doubt about it. But there's obviously a lot more to it than that. Plus, there's a big difference between buying top free agents and developing awesome players from within. The Yankees have obviously done their share of purchasing players (CC, Tex, A-Rod, etc.). But at the same time, a lot of their big players came up through the Yankee farm system - Jeter, Rivera, Cano, Posada, Pettite, as well as guys like David Robertson,  Brett Gardner, Phil Hughes, and several others. So yes, the Yankees have the money to pay those guys to stay, but they are also the ones who developed that talent to begin with.

Of course there are the A-Rods and CCs of the world, but every team has some of that. I mean, look at Fielder's contract. If the Tigers win the World Series this year, then you could have the same "bought the championship" argument. They now have the 5th highest payroll in the MLB.

1 year 7 weeks ago The dredded double post. My

The dredded double post. My appologies.

1 year 7 weeks ago The NL East should be

The NL East should be interesting this year. The Phillies should still be very good thanks to their pitching, but they won't be as dominant as in years past with injuries to guys like Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. A lot of people are expecting big years from the Nats and possibly even the Marlins too, and Atlanta should compete as always. I normally don't follow the NL too much, but this could be an interesting division race. The same is true for the AL East, as Toronto is expected to improve this year as well. Should be a good season!

1 year 7 weeks ago At least he has a cool name.

At least he has a cool name.

1 year 7 weeks ago The heart of the problem is

The heart of the problem is that a lot of people just don't understand the value of a college education. That's unfortunate. It always seems like the guys that complain about this are the 1% that make it to the NFL and thus don't see a need for a college education in the first place.  I wonder if the players who know they'll never make it professionally are more appreciative of their free education?

1 year 7 weeks ago That was BS, no doubt about

That was BS, no doubt about it. On the bright side, it arguably helped us win that game as it extended stoppage time just long enough for the US to score the tying goal and send the game to PKs. Karma.

1 year 9 weeks ago My first Michigan game was

My first Michigan game was App State and I graduated after Rich Rod's last year. Suffice to say, I didn't see a whole lot of great football during my time at Michigan. But, I did get to see this kid play live. I'll forever be thankful for that. Thanks for being an awesome representative of the university, DRob.

1 year 9 weeks ago I'll be curious to see how

I'll be curious to see how Jesus Montero does in Safeco Field - much different hitting environment than Yankee Stadium. I still think he'll be in the talk for top 5 rookies, but maybe not as much as he would have been with the Yankees.

Agree about Matt Moore. The kid was phenomenal last season in the limited action we saw of him.

I've also heard a lot of talk about Bryce Harper. He'll start the season in AAA but I've heard rumblings that he could emerge in the MLB lineup before the seaon is over. I expect big things from him whenever he makes the jump.

1 year 9 weeks ago MSU wants to be nationally

MSU wants to be nationally relevant. Scheduling an OOC game against a team like Oregon is a good way to make sure all eyes are on you when most teams are playing cupcakes.

1 year 9 weeks ago Agreed. Smot's dribbling

Agreed. Smot's dribbling error may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, but we shouldn't have been in that situation to begin with. You could just as easily blame Stu and Novak for their poor showings, Burke for jacking up 9 million contested 3s at the end instead of passing or prolonging the game by getting an easy 2, or THJ for bad shot selection. Or, in other words, THE TEAM.

Smot didn't lose the game for us. The team lost it together. Sucks, but it happens.

1 year 9 weeks ago Karma? Really?  Calling OSU

Karma? Really?

Calling OSU "Ohio" is not an insult to Ohio U. Michigan fans don't have an issue with Ohio U (especially after the epic Mascot beatdown) and fans of both schools tend to hate OSU. The only way that calling OSU "Ohio" could in any way be construed as an insult to Ohio U is, as someone else pointed out, as an error of omission. But it's not some purposeful insult to them.

And it's no different than OSU calling us "The School Up North".

OSU obviously deserves to win but I just wish we could close the gap a little bit. This margin of victory is so embarassing.

The team just seems to have no fight. I don't get it. We can't play this badly the last game before the tournament.

So disappointed with Stu for the lack of awareness at the end there. You've got to be better than that. Especially as a senior. It's inexcusable.

They played part of the "Hide Your Kids, Hide Your Wife" song at some point during the 2010 season. Now THAT is a weird song choice.

1 year 12 weeks ago Molk would have been better

Molk would have been better off without specifically mentioning other players. If he said something like, "I believe I am the best center in this year's draft. The Rimington speaks for itself," then it would be fine. Specifically calling out other players in this way is uncalled for. I love Molk, but this makes him look bad.

1 year 12 weeks ago If there is anything sad

If there is anything sad about our recent success and awesome recruiting classes, it is that we won't have another Zack or Stu. As much as I'm thrilled to be locking up top recruits like McGary, I'll miss these kinds of success stories. I wish we could have sent them out with a win.

1 year 12 weeks ago If Dorsey can make it into

If Dorsey can make it into Michigan on his own accord and then wants to try to walk on, I completely agree with you. In fact, if he makes it into Michigan without a football scholarship, I give the kid even more props than I would have if he made the team the first time. But let's be serious - there probably isn't a very large chance of that happening. It could happen, and it would be wonderful if it did, but it's unlikely.

The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. That's reality. There are always exceptions, especially for young kids, and I hope Dorsey is one of them. I really do. But you're kidding yourself if you don't think he is a risk for a program. Not a guaranteed failure, but a risk nonetheless.

I hope Dorsey is given an opportunity to earn a college degree somewhere and turn his life around. There are too many risks for Michigan to take him, unfortunately, but I hope somebody else gives him a chance.

We would have won this if the students were there. Crowd was dead all night and reflected on the team. Stu and Novak deserve better for their last home game.

I wonder if Meyer would have taken the Ohio job if Braxton Miller wasn't there. Urban is really walking into the perfect scenario personnel-wise. For that reason alone, I expect Ohio to be very good. It would have been interesting to see how he would have fared with a more traditional, pocket passer QB and the need to do a complete overhaul, a la RR. Something tells me that Urban would have shied away from the challenge.

In reference to your 3rd point...

It may not be considered "scandalous," but it's still an offensive and hateful term even if it wasn't meant in the word's original context. As a representative of the University of Michigan, as Erik now is, that type of language should not be used. Especially publicly.

1 year 13 weeks ago This. I'd feel more

This.

I'd feel more confident that my elite football team could win a national championship than an equally elite basketball team. Even if we get a playoff in football soon, I think I'd feel the same way as long as the playoff is limited to a small number of teams. Way too much luck involved with March Madness, as fun as it is to watch.

1 year 13 weeks ago I really hate complaining

I really hate complaining about refs in sports, but this is just insane. NW has been in the bonus for 9 minutes! That's a load of crap.

I wish I could say that NW is playing well enough to beat us or that we're just beating ourselves. But the refs are beating us, pure and simple. We better step it up and figure out how to get into the paint and play defense without fouling in the second half.

1 year 13 weeks ago There is something about

There is something about Urban Meyer that makes everything he does seem so incredibly fake. I don't doubt that he's a great coach, but his whole "The Team Up North" nonsense seems so put on.

I wonder how I'd feel if I was a recruit that wanted to major in the areas that this sign not-so-subtly implies are "easy" or bad majors. I could see this backfiring.
