|29 weeks 3 days ago||Not only laid back, but thus||
Not only laid back, but thus far Hoke has not proven he has the mental capability of an elite head coach.
Listening to Beilien's radio show tonight is such a stark contrast from anything I've ever heard Hoke say, be it in a press conference, in a private rotary club type setting, at a coaching convention, or otherwise.
Beilien could recite off the top of his head how many free throw attempts Stauskas has had this year, and noted that it was more than Burke had at this time last year.
That little nugget right there, however miniscule, just shows that Beilien knows the X's and O's, is up to date on relevant metrics, and can disect the critical aspects of the game.
It is nothing like "We did some things, executed, heard football being played."
Like it or not, you need to be more than a figure head to be a Head Coach at a school like this. You need to be able to think critically, solve problems and truly analyze every nook and cranny of the game.

Makes you wonder if there's some sort of creative censorship being handed down from the AD or elsewhere.

On a related note, I've heard from somebody I trust that Borges will be done after the bowl game. Not looking to start a fracas or start a new thread, but sounds like there could be some shuffling on the staff regardless of what happens in the game.
Their reason for waiting until the bowl game isn't an accident either - sounds like they are going after some guys in the NFL/with late bowl games whom they don't want to disrupt, similar to what happened in 2010. I guess this must be Brandon's MO.

Does he try and snag another MAC Head Coach job? Does he lateral to a DL Coach position at a BCS level school?

Contrary to popular belief, the media is the program's microphone to the public. Everything Hoke says to the media is amplified. Look at the articles coming out of MSM this week, from Wojo and Chengelis and even here on the blog from Brian. All negative. All containing baffling quotes from Hoke.
Hoke saying ridiculous shit is bad PR. There's a way to "defend your staff" without sounding like a pompous asshole.

Brady Hoke is an embarassment to this academically elite University. Hoke's not an alum. I get that. But to have somebody who thinks in this way, who speaks this way to the media, who communicates with vague catchphrases such as "we didn't do some things" and spews such absurd garbage is an insult to the the people who have worked hard to build up the integrity of the institution.
It's enough already. I don't mind having a non-alum coach. I do mind having a (purposely or otherwise) mentally incapacitated one.

It's like a never ending cycle of idiocy.

This is a poor comparison. I understand what you're getting at, but you're leaving out a lot of the relevant stuff.
Beilein was an outsider. Hoke was not.
Beilein was absolutely known for his innovative playing style and his experience with doing more with less. He was unique. Hoke is innately ordinary. There is nothing special about him. His preferred style of play is about as exciting as Swan Lake.
Beilein had a lot more time to get his stuff together because the program had been a dumpster fire for so long. Hoke's leash is a bit shorter. M football is held to a higher standard than basketball.

The turning point for Brady Hoke occured as soon as he sent the punt team out in PSU territory in Happy Valley. I stand by that. That was Brady Hoke's fatal error, it showed his true colors.

Brady Hoke is an embarassment to the University. Time to hire the best available coach out there, not just a "Michigan Man." If you don't need to be a Michigan Man to be a fan then you certainly don't need to be one to be a coach.
I want a leader, somebody with ingenunity. Somebody that actually has some sort of tangible control over what occurs during the game. Brady Hoke is not that man.

Though this guy comes off as a douche his logic seems correct. If you haven't spent four years eating, living, and breathing on a particular college campus, poured thousands of dollars into tuition and living expenses into any given school, or are employed there, why even care? Why not root for the Lions with such fervor? Or the Pistons? Or the Tigers?
Collegiate Athletics is a uniquely American phenomenon. This great country of ours is filled with so many large academic institutions. College Athletics has literally grown from the adoration and loyalty that these alumni feel for their schools.
Makes you wonder if the commercialization of College Athletics and the growing number of "Walmart Wolverine" types is a coincidence.

I just don't see that happening three years into this project. We have regressed. We're recruiting great? Outstanding. There's a big difference between building relationships with kids in order to get them to commit and putting them in a position to succeed once they're here.
Just don't see the latter coming to fruition under the Hoke/Borges Manball Reich.

Again, this argument is absolutely nuts. Nuts. And BiSB, I love you, but that statement is wholly incorrect.
|39 weeks 6 days ago||You are delusional. How long||
You are delusional. How long can we use "youth" as an excuse? It's been an excuse for 6 straight years now. News flash: every team suffers from attrition and "youth." We currently have a senior wide receiver, a 4th year quarterback, two upperclassmen tackles (NFL draft picks, mind you), a senior running back. And that's just on offense, where we've had the most trouble. Do you know how many teams would kill for that amount of upperclassmen at those positions?
What a joke argument. No team plays stacked with juniors and seniors at every position.
|40 weeks 3 days ago||This is a really well thought||
This is a really well thought out and great response.
However I didn't insinuate that media terseness has anything to do with coaching competence. I simply pointed out the similarities between the way Kiffin and Hoke handle the media.
As many (now fired) coaches know, once the media turns on you, you're toast, especially in the twitter groupthink era.
You may not know anybody that personally works the Michigan beat, but I can assure you, they don't appreciate the way Hoke treats the media. The tension has been building for a while now, and losing will only exacerbate the matter. Do you have any idea how hard a media person's job becomes if only given the blah answers and total misdirection that Hoke provides? These people are the ones responsible for shaping the public's view on Hoke and this team. His behavior doesn't help.
|40 weeks 4 days ago||This game and the aftermath||
This game and the aftermath has proved that Brady Hoke has way more in common with Lane Kiffin than many of us acknowledge. From the way he shuts down practices, disrespects the media, and runs this program like his own little secret club. The similarities are staggering. The stubbornness, unwillingness to change the dynamic on the staff (besides Monte "stepping down," Kiffin was insistent on calling plays even though he was terrible at it) and flat out lack of preparedness to coach at this level.
Anyone who thinks Brady Hoke is the man to take this program to the next level has not watched enough USC Football over the past three years.

No offense bro, you seem like a pretty even keeled, nice guy. But I think a lot of the flack you're receiving right now results from your lack of willingness to take some of these concerns (most of which could end up making you a better "reporter" in the long run) seriously. A "you guys bring up some valid points, I will discuss with Brian and reevaluate" would go a long way to quelling the masses.
But to just pack up everything and pick up your ball and go home because of this? Come on.
This blog has never done things the "conventional" way.
Yes, it may be "conventional" for old dudes to tweet at adolescents, hoping to engage them in conversation.
But that doesn't mean there's not a better way to go about this.

Hopefully this starts a necessary dialogue about the role of third party sites (like this one) in recruiting.
If you wan't to talk about a kid after he commits, fine. But to actively search out and contact via social media (like this dude Brandon explains above, and I'm sure is standard in the industry) is quite frankly pretty disgusting. I understand these media types want to run a succesful enterprise - but at what price?

Players are given checks in the amount of $1000/month for rent. Many of them live at places that don't cost half that (i.e. the homes down by the Athletic Campus) and they pocket the rest. Ever wonder why Denard was always able to sport a better wardrobe than 99% of undergrads?
