The schools give up their rights to interfere with students' economic freedom (i.e., right to contract for compensation with private parties) and that's that. Players who can sign endorsement deals proceed to do so, those who can't, don't.
|3 days 13 hours ago||If college football should be a purely amateur enterprise||
shouldn't the coaching staffs be comprised strictly of other students? Grad assistants who receive their stipend and nothing else? Their coaching would be considered apprenticeships and every few years you'd have a complete turnover in staff as the students graduated and moved on. Or go to the high school model... coaches only come from the faculty and have to balance coaching with their academic responsibilities, which would set a good example for those student-athletes we're trying so hard to keep pure.
|3 days 13 hours ago||Actually, yes, the student does deserve more||
and can in fact receive more if the research leads to patent royalties, which are often also shared with faculty who are named inventors on patents. I knew several grad students who received significant checks for their share of patent royalties sometimes years after they graduated.

I suspect you can't get away with it to the same extent. Saban's really an outlier, maybe his reputation is so strong that he's able to bring those guys in regardless, the way Bobby Knight used to convince top players to go to Bloomington to get heaps of abuse at practice every day. Maybe they just knew they'd get turned into superb, fundamentally polished players, and that made the whole thing worth it. I don't know.

|2 weeks 4 days ago||Been thinking about Bo lately.||
I never thought Bo was any kind of football tactician to speak of in terms of schemes and innovation. But man, was he brilliant at imprinting the fire and discipline so characteristic of his personality onto the young men he coached. I once heard an ex-player describe that you hated him as a freshman, accepted him as a sophomore, respected him as a junior, and loved him as a senior.
I wonder if this is how he was able to bring in high-level recruits yet avoid the "entitlement" problem that sometimes comes with top-shelf talent-- and why our post-Bo history seems to have been so frequently characterized by doing less with more.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Intriguing.||
Big 10 Champions are statistically good at football. These ideas are new to me and I wish to subscribe to the ESPN newsletter.
What I'd really like to see is an anthology of how many times on these boards we heard some variation of "a spread offense can't work in the Big 10." It seems, shockingly, you can run a spread and still run, play defense, control the clock, limit turnovers, etc. If you can control the line of scrimmage, you can make any system work. The OL, the OL, the OL.
Also, the Team. I'm excited about it. I think they're going to exceed expectations, which are appropriately modest, and the OL will be average, which will also exceed expectations.

Soccer is 99% passing, dribbling, and tackling. So make the tiebreak something that involves those things instead of just shooting, which is like deciding an NBA game with a free throw contest at the end.
Such as... two players from Team A get the ball at the top of the box. Team B has a goalie and 2 defenders. If Team B puts the ball out of bounds or keeper gets possession, Team B wins. Team A has to put the ball in the net to win. Switch sides and repeat until one side gets a goal and the other doesn't.
|3 weeks 6 hours ago||OK, now that Brazil got that last one||
NOW it's like Michigan's 34-8 '97 win over PSU on "Judgment Day." We were up 34-0 and I remember how pissed I was that PSU got on the board at the very end to screw up the masterpiece. Anyway, that final score probably doesn't scale to 7-1. Maybe if we'd won 70-8.
The bizarre thing about this to me is that I always thought you could just go down to any street corner in Brazil, pick out the first 11 Brazillians you see, put jerseys on them and you'll have a team that can compete. Kinda like I thought you could just put Michigan uniforms on 5 300-lb. dudes and have them block for positive rushing yards. I learned otherwise recently.

|5 weeks 2 days ago||Lawrence Marshall's comment jumped out at me||
He said "I feel I've got to provide for my family one day and the only way I can do that is by grinding." The context could be a little tricky, but a reasonable interpretation is that he's talking about his football-playing ability providing for his (current) family one day. That seems to me indicative of how so many D-1 football players must feel-- despite knowing the long odds on any college player making the NFL-- and seems a terribly heavy burden for an 18-year old kid.
It would be great (kinda) if the context was actually academic work, and the "grinding" he's talking about is studying, which is the surer route to providing for one's family. Even that's rough-- think how stressed you would have been if you went through college knowing your parents and other family members were depending on you for support.

A cool two hundred smackaroos. Incredibly, also out of stock.
The chime rang and the Estonian stood, sliding down the ramp to his destiny. His destiny would be 8th place or something. Wallace the Wolverine's was far less certain.
Wallace had a moment to consider the series of bad decisions that had led him, a proud and noble wolverine from Saskatchewan, to this place, a B-list ski jump event in Switzerland. He'd never even been to Fiji, and yet here he was, Fijan passport stapled to his fur, planks strapped to his feet, staring down at a 70-foot drop that flared up at the end. If only he'd… no time for that now. The chime.

When I moved to Sunnyvale, California last year from DC, I needed a new DL. I went online, made an appointment at the local DMV, showed up, waited about 5 min in the check-in line, waited about 10 min or so after that to be called to take the test, walked out about 20 min. later with my temporary license after getting my pic and fingerprint taken.
Same experience when I bought a used car and had to get the title/registration done. The people working the desk were pleasant, it was crowded but well-staffed, and the lines moved fast.
After years and years of DMV jokes (specifically CA DMV) on late-night television, I have to say I was completely floored at how efficient the whole thing was.

it doesn't much matter, given that it's straight-up hearsay and not admissable evidence in court (that is, Lewan's purported statement on the phone to his mother).
On the public opinion side, admissable and not good. Ex or no ex, she's probably recalling it accurately. It's not hard to imagine a drunk OSU fan wanting to prove his toughness by starting an altercation with a Michigan player, and it's not hard to imagine Lewan (a) not being able to control himself, especially after the high emotion of the bitter loss (b) knocking a dude out and (c) bragging about (b) to his mom over the phone in the presence of his girlfriend.

The point is that people use "absolutely" so often that it completely loses meaning-- when everything is emphatic, nothing is. Unless you're emphatic about every damn thing, in which case, I pity the poor son of a bitch who is the other party in the conversation.

|11 weeks 8 hours ago||Excellent stuff. One disagreement with Citro:||
I think the rivalry is indeed diminished when one side is struggling to keep it's head above water in the league year after year, which I'd define as finishing 5-3 or better in B1G. I know what he means, that the fans don't care and the intensity of the competition isn't lessened, but a great rivalry in this context is a relevant rivalry unless you're Army-Navy or something.
Notre Dame-Michigan has had, for many years, what you'd call "plausible relevance" given the lofty preseason expectations year in and year out, but what if you swapped OSU and Notre Dame on Michgan's schedule all those years? You'd have an OSU game that was must-watching for the average college football fan across the country instead of merely a regional game that might, at best, be a warm-up for the games that matter these days: Bama-LSU, Bama-Auburn, lately Stanford-Oregon, maybe FSU-Miami again for another cycle.
It doesn't have to be 2006 every year to be a great rivalry, or even be a 50/50 split, but there needs to be more at stake every year for more than just one side. Being a "spoiler" of your rival's season is not having something meaningful at stake.

A dagger three is a three that a team already in the lead makes to put the game away, more or less like a "nail in the coffin" but, you know, cooler. If you're "exchanging" daggers, they're not daggers. /semantic argument that no one but me cares about
|17 weeks 2 days ago||You're right.||
I believe they went +8 in that stretch or something along those lines, but I've already deleted the game from my DVR and wouldn't watch it again anyway.
|17 weeks 2 days ago||A moment of zen.||
Said it in the appreciation thread, but I'll let the guy say it for himself.
It's not some kind of eastern thing. It's a Midwest Regional Final thing.
|17 weeks 2 days ago||Cool.||
Keep sending shout-outs to Michigan come September. And yeah, the consistency of charge calls left something to be desired.

just hits the damn shot. True freshman lining up a 22-footer with a hand in his mug? I'll take my chances on that shot in that situation every time.
Congratulations to the Big Ten Champions on a helluva great season. Love, love this team.
|17 weeks 2 days ago||Wow, what a battle.||
Could not be prouder of our guys. Phenomenal effort. Our last offensive possession was the epitome of this team's resilience. Give Kentucky credit-- they were far deadlier from 3-pt. range than I expected. A freshman steps up and knocks that well-defended shot down with 2.6 seconds left... what can you do.
"Sometimes you eat the bar... sometimes the bar eats you."
|17 weeks 6 days ago||Fair point.||
You probably have to keep boosters away from the high school kids as far as recruiting goes much the same as you do today. But once they're in a school, my thinking is that if you assume a booster is willing to spend his company's advertising dollars on a player, that player is probably talented enough to command similar money elsewhere on the market. I doubt you'll get boosters paying someone a lot more than they're otherwise "worth" on the market* just to, say, keep them playing an additional year instead of bolting to the NFL, because if they're that good, they'll monetize from someone else anyway.
At least this gives the elite talent somewhere else to look besides those omnipresent "uncles" and sports agent wannabes willing to fork over a little spending money here and there.
*(my personal feeling here is that anything is "worth" what someone, anyone is willing to pay for it, but this is something of a semantic/economic debate, I guess)
|17 weeks 6 days ago||Bingo.||
Then the free market decides many of the thornier questions that make a pay-for-play scheme otherwise befuddling/impossible to figure out. Who gets paid? How much? Who decides? Answer to all of these in a pay-for-play is far from obvious. But the market is great at deciding these kinds of things. Maybe the students can't use the University logos/uniforms(z) in the ads or whatever, but otherwise, what's more American than hocking products as a paid spokesperson?
The universities do what universities do... provide an education. If the players are talented enough to monetize their skills, let them have at it. That's probably some fraction of 1% of college athletes. Allowing endorsement deals reduces the hypocrisy and under-the-table dealing a good deal more than 1%, I'd wager.

in practices. We didn't have a single game week last year where Coach Hoke didn't say "we had a great week of practice." I don't follow any other teams so I have no idea if other teams are as good at practice as we are. We are really good at it.
|19 weeks 2 days ago||Two Takeaways for me||
1. This kid has really matured in a year. He handles the repetitive annoying questions with the skill of an NBA veteran and doesn't roll his eyes at all.
"Are you going to play this year?"
"I really don't know."
"Would you like to?"
It's a stronger man than I who can refrain from saying "Seriously?" or "Clown question, bro."
2. He's not even going to start jumping for another week, and even that sounds like baby jumps. Maybe in a parallel universe he plays a few minutes in the tournament if we're up 50 on the final weekend, but not in this one.

|22 weeks 4 days ago||I think that last point is particularly important||
What's the longest stretch of time we can point to where we had an absolutely firm idea of our defensive philosophy (i.e., at the positional level) and what type of athlete we want at each spot? It takes years of consistent recruiting and player development to reach elite status as a unit on that side of the ball, and every reshuffle, in a way, just feels like restarting the clock yet again.
1. Believe in your system.
2. Recruit the players who are the right fit, not just the most starry.
3. Coach and develop with consistency over several years.
I don't know man. Yes, trust the coaches yada yada, but Jake MF Ryan was pretty comfortable where he was and good at what he was doing, as ugly as OSU was (which you're not going to convince would have been different with the new scheme the way our DL was getting blown off the line).

|27 weeks 5 days ago||This was 10 years ago in Chicago.||
1. Realizing I was old: I was walking on the sidewalk in downtown and a couple of college-aged young ladies came up to me. "Excuse me, Sir, do you know how to get to such and such?"
WTF? Are they talking to me? Sir? That was devastating.
Also, the fact that this story took place 10 years ago also makes it worse in a meta-way.
EDIT: 2. Feeling less old: laying down some pipe with cute 20somethings. Its toolish and douchey, but I'm telling you, it works. |28 weeks 5 days ago||Several of the great OC game plans in recent UM history||
were courtesy of Coach Borges: the 2012-13 Outback Bowl vs. SC, the 2011 and 2013 OSU games, and the 2011 Nebraska game. There were other great offensive performances, such as ND 2011 and 2013 and Indiana 2013, but I always viewed those more as attributable to outstanding playmaking by the QBs and WRs more than the O plan, though obviously you can't separate the two entirely.
Wish everything had worked out better, but Coach B is a good guy who did the best he could with the cards on the table. Wish him the best. Thanks Coach.

|28 weeks 6 days ago||Ho. Li. Fuk.||
I actually step away from MGoBlog for a couple hours to, you know, earn a living, and this is what happens.
Question (apologies, I didn't read through every single post to see if this has been asked and answered): what does this mean for the offensive assistants? Are they gone as well? Or is a new OC supposed to work with the pre-existing staff? If the answer to the latter is yes, that sounds like a recipe for GERG. OC should get to bring in his own staff to the extent the HC signs off on the hires.
Support the move (because obviously) but now that it's happened, I actually feel kinda bad for Al. I always liked him personally, and the impact on the families of the position coaches (if they're out the door as well) is rough. Wish Al and any others the best of luck.

Larry Foote, who was on primetime games a ton because the Steelers are on so frequently, never says Michigan. I don't think he's got a problem with UM, because he was one of the alumni who participated in RR's alumni flag football game that used to be warmup for spring game. I've never heard Avant say Michigan, and I know there's at least one other Michigan player who does the same thing, but I'm forgetting who it is. It's not Tom Brady, it's not Lamarr Woodley, but I'm blanking on who it is.
Anyway, it does seem to happen to Michigan more than anyone-- grumble, grumble.

There is no magical 2-point conversion play. It's a 50-50 proposition more or less and what can you do, they made a good break on the ball and pressured DG so he couldn't wait for Gallon to break open. That play had a decent chance, give them credit for doing their homework and getting set up well in the timeout. I'd love to see us switch up our look after the timeout just to fuck with them, but that's all game theory and there's no way to know.
Our chances of winning in OT were something substantially less than 50-50, for at least these reasons:
1. Hyde/Miller gashing us mercilessly
2. No Gibbons
3. Our best player is on one leg
Right decision to go for it, and in 10 parallel universes, running the exact same play, we win that game in 5 of them. Unfortunately, we're all living in one of the other 5.
|34 weeks 2 days ago||There is a genuine chance that Auburn jumps OSU||
in the BCS even if human voters keep OSU at No.2. The computers love Auburn, and if the human vote gets a little closer with an unimpressive OSU win vs. Sparty and a great Auburn performance vs. Missouri, then it's probably Auburn-FSU in the title game. Frankly, I think Sharp's got it about right. What has OSU done to make anyone think they're the 3rd best team in the nation? They just squeaked by in a game in which they were a 16-point favorite with a generous bit of help from the replay official, an injury to Michigan's best player, and a 50/50 result on the game's final play. Even No.8 might be generous.
|34 weeks 3 days ago||It isn't.||
You don't count that on the stat sheet, anyway. Check out the box scores.
|34 weeks 3 days ago||Huh? What INT?||
32/45, 71% completions, no picks, one completely unbelievable horseshit fumble call that is on the replay official, not Gardner.
|34 weeks 3 days ago||He sure as hell didn't fumble today||
The B1G needs to explain the instant replay decision.
Anyway, 32/45 for 451 yds., 4 TDs, no INTs, that is one of the greatest individual performances in Michigan history.
Greater than Biakbutuka's individual performance in '95? I don't know, maybe. Put the '95 defense behind Gardner today and we win easily.
|34 weeks 3 days ago||Huh?||
I guess he was supposed to throw the ball away?
|34 weeks 3 days ago||Devin Gardner's day was every bit as epic as Biakbutuka's||
No, we didn't get the win, but that was one dude putting the whole team on his back for 60 minutes and playing out of his mind. Goddamnit, he deserved to get that win. What a performance.
Borges did a great job, too. He has to go, but he deserves a pat on the back for that gameplan.
|34 weeks 3 days ago||I concur.||
Fuck 'em. They've got 11, we've got 11, let's just go win the goddamned thing. We've got the talent to do it.
|34 weeks 4 days ago||You guys are soooooo gloomy||
You obviously haven't been listening to the press conferences. According to both Hoke and the OCs, we are totally undefeated in practice this year. We always have a great week.
Just because we'll probably lose in the The Game doesn't take away the FIVE wins we've already racked up this week alone.
|35 weeks 2 days ago||Jeebus.||
|35 weeks 3 days ago||So the Baylor-OSU (NNTOSU) game just tweaked a pet peeve||
Because Brent Musburger just watched a punt where the OSU player stepped into the endzone trying to knock the ball back into the field of play, and despite Herbie correctly pointing out that the ball broke the plane of the goal line (which is the only thing you care about under college rules), Brent decides to point out that "and of course, his [the gunner trying to down the ball] foot was in the endzone."
How many college football games has Brent Musburger watched? How many have most play-by-play men called and still completely flub the college rule and think its important where the player is, as opposed to the ball? This drives me nuts, mostly because I'd just like professional broadcasters to, you know, learn the basic rules of the game they're calling.
I'm in a grumpy mood. OSU (NNTOSU) is helping OSU (YTOSU) to add insult to today's injury.
|35 weeks 3 days ago||Baylor evidently runs for 300 yds/game||
How come that doesn't qualify them for MANBALL status?
|35 weeks 3 days ago||RichRod should have had 5 years||

|35 weeks 3 days ago||Wait, are you saying||

You just blew my mind. From now on, any offense that performs less well against top defenses than against shitty defenses shall be deemed conceptually invalid.

Curious to know how many stars she is. What's the upshot for the rest of the class?
|35 weeks 6 days ago||Very interesting stuff.||
Just not much you can do scheme-wise when you can't block the interior or protect the pocket.
I suspect at the end of the day Holgorsen has some credibility in the account from the past couple of years that he can fall back on now. Very tough to say there's a scheme issue with a guy who has shown the ability to give his side the proverbial "decided schematic advantage."
When was the last time we watched a Michigan game and thought our OC was just plain outfoxing the other guys? Maybe for a brief glimpse at the end of 2011, and in the bowl against South Carolina, which I thought was Borges' best game plan to date, but that's about it.
|35 weeks 6 days ago||Jeebus, where to even start with this?||
How about just No. 3, because it's the easiest to swat with some numbers.
With a small but ugly sample in 2009, people were asking if Denard could even be a college QB. Look at the improvement under RR from 2009 to 2010, then the regression each year under "Borgess" (what, is he dating Funchess or something?)
Comp %: 45.2 to 62.5 under RR, then drops to 55.0, then drops to 53.3. Regression.
YPA: 6.1 to 8.8 under RR, then drops to 8.4, then drops to 7.9. Regression.
TD/Int: 0.5 to 1.64 under RR, then drops to 1.33, then drops to 1.00.
Like you, I am disappoint. I am disappoint that my favorite Michigan player of all time didn't have a better OC.
|36 weeks 2 days ago||That's the answer||

|36 weeks 2 days ago||I believe Notre Dame was his second game.||
Even in that game, they seemed to have pulled themselves together after the ASU debacle. But they're not up one week, down the next, they're playing consistently better than in the first half of the season. It suggests coaches are getting more from the players.
USC deserved to win tonight's game. They made the plays at the end that Stanford didn't make. We're dreaming of playing well enough to be in a position where being "fortunate" means a win over a top 5 team.
|36 weeks 3 days ago||Ed O should change his name to Serv-Pro||

|36 weeks 3 days ago||I have zero problem with the 4th-and-2 decision||
despite losing a lot of faith in Hoke this season, I'm totally in his corner on that one. Never a need to apologize for being aggresive and playing to win. Play to win, man. Wasn't crazy about running into the short side of the field, but yeah, different issue.
Getting the field goal team on for the fire drill kick was the best execution on a play I've seen all year. It was the first time I thought "Holy shit, they look like they practiced that a million times." Great job by players and coaches alike.
