The Penn St. hit was called targeting and upheld by the review.
This hit from last night's Stanford-UCLA was NOT targeting on the field, and the booth agreed:
That is utterly ridiculous. If you're a defensive player, you have no clue what's going to be called and what isn't. They've taken intent implied with the word "targeting" and read it completely out of the rule.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||It is up to the officials to determine intent.||
The rule says targeting and initiating the contact. Targeting is a deliberate act. If you wanted to leave intent out of the equation, you'd only have the intiating language, not the targeting.

This is an absolute fucking disgrace.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Change to a yellow card/red card system for those types of calls||
So here's a reprint of the rule straight from the rulebook:
So "targeting" as a verb (deliberately separated in the rule from initiating) implies a deliberate take aim (with "initiating" representing launching/hitting) at the head/neck area. Intent definitely matters. How going for the ball translates into intent to target a head area is beyond me.
Anyway, in situations like that, would rather see a soccer-like system employed:
Yellow, if at all, if it's on the margins and intent isn't clear. Player stays on the field, maybe a second yellow in the same game gets you tossed.
Red if the player went headhunting. That's usually pretty clear-- the crouch, the launch, the hit. Player gets ejected immediately.
I thought it was a bullshit call today.

|8 weeks 4 days ago||Fair questions.||
From where I sit, the answer to all of them is yes. Those are all examples of social costs (which I define more broadly than "polite disagreement") that are knowingly risked when you deliberately share unpopular views publicly. Some unpopular views are vindicated by the flow of history, some aren't.
Re: the last question, let's say I expressed the same political views that were generally popular when I was a student at Michigan and instead enrolled at Hillsdale, or Bob Jones, or Oral Roberts, or somewhere else where the general sentiment was clearly the other way. I would either (a) speak my mind if it was a true conviction or (b) keep quiet about it if it wasn't all that important to me. If I chose (a), I would fully expect social costs. What I wouldn't do is choose to attend and then complain that my unpopular views are making me unpopular.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||Entirely OK with the being fired from the Daily part.||
Entirely not OK with the vandalism part.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||I hear you.||
All I would add is the obvious: that social change always begins with somone expressing an unpopular view. If you believe in it, you bear the social cost. There are some views that fully deserve to end up in the proverbial dustbin of history, but I think marginalizing the person holding the view is counterproductive for everyone.
Appreciate your thoughtful reply, SRK.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||Serious question for you||
Is this just a different way of saying "I hold views which, if I express them, will have a social cost on campus that makes me uncomfortable"?
Or are you saying you're afraid you'll be expelled if you express the "wrong" opinion?
If it's the latter, I think that's fairly awful and unacceptable. If it's the former, I'm really struggling to be sympathetic. A great deal of the complaining about "PC" restraints on campus dialogue, in my opinion, is really just a way of saying you want to express something society views as noxious without having any social consequence. And that's just being a wuss. Free speech doesn't mean consequence-free speech.

|9 weeks 6 days ago||Someone's going to have to explain the butthurt here, because I||
don't get why every minor critique of JH causes the board to go full RCMB. Rome said Harbaugh (1) shouldn't have ended his press conference because he got a couple of questions he didn't like, which I agree with though I also agree JH was right not to answer those specific suspension-related questions (2) repeated the "wore out his welcome" theme, which is just plain factually wrong, but it was in the context of calling him an amazing coach who is just so intense he may not be permanent at any coaching gig.
And that's about it. That last bit about permanence? I'm not sure I disagree... he does run hot, and thank god for that. That's what makes him brilliant. But none of us knows how long he's staying. After he pockets a couple of NCs, he may want to go back for that ring. Who knows.
As for him, going nuclear at every perceived minor slight when anyone in the media universe levies even the mildest critique is not a great look. Some people deserve it (SEC, Mork, Urban, NCAA). It's fun to have a fighter like that as coach. Fighting every last talking head in the media, on the other hand, makes you look smaller.
As for Rome, I've listened to the podcast here and there for about 2 years, and I've heard him mention at least twice how much he regrets that Jim Everett thing in 1994. He uses it with guests as an illustration of why to avoid judging people based on their worst day. He's also been a staunch defender of Harbaugh all summer through the satellite camp thing.
The clip is still hilarious after all these years, tho...
|9 weeks 6 days ago||In defense of Rome||
he came out very, very hard in defense of Harbaugh on the satellite camp issue and all things SEC vs. Harbaugh. He fawns on Harbaugh most of the time. Here, I think he's being reflexively defensive of his media brethren, and that's about it. "Great coach, unbelievable coach" doesn't sound like someone who has it in for Harbaugh vis-a-vis Finebaum.
|9 weeks 6 days ago||The general narrative taken with appropriate salt grains (many)||
seems to be that Speight is your low-variance game manager, and O'Korn is your high-variance gunslinger. If that's true, Speight may very well win out. This team is loaded almost everywhere and might not need the higher-risk approach to maximize overall value consistently. Don't turn the ball over and with this defense, you're in great shape most of the time.
Craig Ross was on Michigan Insider about a week ago discussing some numbers on O'Korn from freshman year at Houston, and the gist of it was that O'Korn had some very high tipped ball numbers. That number usually correlates with interceptions but JOK came in with much fewer INTs than would be expected with the number of tips (he was 28/10 TD-INT, just FYI). The idea was that the tipped ball/INT correlation was basically luck, and it suggests that he was lucky to have only 10 picks on the year and not a significantly higher number.
The legs, tho... we've been on the wrong side of so many mobile to halfway-mobile QBs over the years, the PTSD from that collective trauma makes me always want the guy who can make some lemonade with his feet. And if Grant Newsome isn't working out, there's gonna be no shortage of lemons to deal with coming around the blind side on speed rushes.
Low-variance passing and "niftiness" of Speight in practice notwithstanding, he's not the dude you want back there unless the left tackle is low-variance himself. For that reason, if I had access to the Sub these days, I'd be watching Newsome just as much as the QBs themselves.

Brady Hoke's debut and the game with 2 TD returns by Brandon Herron, including a 95-yarder. I was at that game-- we had a great time out in the downpour while it lasted. They started up again and called it off early in the 4th if memory serves. The players seemed to be having a pretty good time for the most part.

After MSU (in person), I walked out thinking, "OK, Acts of God or whatever aside, we're passing this program up. Enjoy your miracle, Sparty. That's what it's going take from now on."
After OSU, I thought "Jeebus, we have so far to go to catch up to these guys as a program."
OSU was less shocking but somehow more brutal as a reality.

Guys that big shouldn't be able to move that fast. And we may never know how great he could have been because he battled kidney disease most of his career, which eventually led to a transplant and premature death.

Phelps for GOAT swimmer, absolutely. But athlete? The people on the planet earth with the greatest natural talent for swimming probably never went swimming a day in their lives, because most people don't. Competitive swimming is a developed-country sport for people who had access to swimming facilities.
On the other hand, if you're insanely fast or a ridiculous all-around athlete, you figure it out pretty early in life. Swimming is competition against a tiny fraction of the world-- running by contrast is competition against damn near every person on the planet.

If anyone's clean, it's probably Bolt. He is so unlike the other sprinters because of his stride length. I forget how many fewer strides he needs to cover 100m compared to his competitors but it's not insignificant. Plus he doesn't quite have that eye-popping comic book superhero physique that makes other 100m athletes look so unnatural (and suspicious).
EDIT: Well, that post didn't post where I wanted it to post. So just let me say... yes, horsehockey. Horsehockey indeed.

Style, grace, and quite possibly/probably PEDs. Her times and physique changed so dramatically in 1988 that there was always a cloud over her. There was also a member of her training team that claimed he gave her HGH and coaches were in on it. We'll never know, but she was an also-ran until 1988 and that's a lot of smoke for no fire. I just can't take anything in track and field seriously, the incentives to cheat are simply too great and the testing regime is forever behind the new chemistry.
|10 weeks 2 days ago||Eh. Seems reasonable.||
There's no hot take here. 10-2 accounts for many risks in the upcoming season: Grant Newsome not working out at LT, an injury at OL or LB or S, unproven QB situation, night game at Kinnick, OSU is still loaded with talent, etc...

|10 weeks 5 days ago||MGoBlog might consider||
taking a page (semi-literally) from various legal state bars and highlighting "disciplinary action" against members every month somewhere on the site. (Example: State Bar Journal publishes a short blurb about "attorney X, who mixed personal and client accounts and further failed to meet a deadline for brief, causing harm to the client. X was suspended 1 year but not disbarred." Hence transgression and punishment are summarized, not so much as a public shaming but as a cautionary tale for the membership)
So in MGoBlog terms you'd go to a link up in the banner menu (maybe under useful stuff) titled "Bolivia and Beyond" with instances of users being docked points or more severely being banned from the site altogether, and further a short blurb re: what they did to deserve it.
You could strip the username out if that is deemed too shamey. But the cautionary tale aspect survives regardless and I think it would quickly become a favorite click for many users, because the bad behavior of others is sweet edu-tainment.

Started last night with the first two episodes and was stunned how good it is. The cinematography is brilliant and the lack of narration from anyone other than the particulars gives it a neutral quality instead of an ideology or agenda-driven feel (a frequent complaint I have about ESPN 30-30 productions, for example).
