Looks like the "marketplace of ideas" has weighed in on your thoughts, judging by the up/down numbers.
Would everyone's reaction come out the same way if Harbaugh expressed a deeply unpopular sentiment, you know, the kind the 1st amendment and free speech generally is supposed to be there to protect? What if he said he and the team were making a statement for freedom by having each coach and player burn a U.S. flag or piss on some pictures of dead U.S. soldiers, because we can legally do that in America and it symbolizes the kind of speech that actually needs protecting because it's so deeply unpopular? Everyone still come out the same way?
This blog excels when it sticks to sports. Sports-related figures commenting on political issues is not sports. Sports chat is the Maize Brick Road. Bad things happen when we get too far off it.

I don't care where people went to school. I care that they notice subtle but important things that happen on the field and point them out. I think Herbie is pretty good at this, and Spielman is fantastic at it.

but I wasn't looking for inspiring. I was just looking for someone who doesn't make me cry. Apart from that way-ugly interception around the 3:24 mark, I didn't want to weep. He was often getting broken in half just as he delivered the ball, so I give the guy some toughness points. Ball floats but, hey, pretty damn catchable for our receivers who can't handle Shane's fastballs.

Jesse Ventura even won a libel case against him. Yep, proven in court. He even claimed at one point to have shot people from the roof of the Superdome during the post-Katrina chaos. I think the bigger issue is that the guy wasn't the guy portrayed in the movie as having moral qualms about killing people. His book and interviews indicated the opposite: he enjoyed killing people and had no qualms about it whatsoever. It might have been a better movie by relying on a fictional character representing soldiers at large rather than a fantasy about an actual person that bore no resemblance to his real-life persona.

Overall, it sounds as though the fan base was a little frustrated with him for being so conservative with throwing down the field as opposed to checking down so consistently, but the article also notes the OL should have taken some heat.
OTOH, the Rivals Iowa guy says "on the field, he did exactly what the coaches wanted," which suggests the checkdowns were part of the OC plan.
He sounds like a great kid, by the way. If Harbaugh gets a 3am phone call, he can probably go ahead and think to himself, "welll, it's safe to say this isn't about Jake Rudock."

HIV and other "lentiviruses" have been the object of investigation for gene therapy since before I started my grad work in '97 (I worked with retroviral vectors but not HIV). They're good vectors for introducing therapeutic genes because they can integrate into the host genome without needing to drive the target cell into division, which is the trick with other retroviruses.
But clinical trials with viral vectors are fraught with peril... it can be very hard to predict how people's immune systems will react to the vector. The famous/infamous case of Jesse Gelsinger at Penn basically shut down viral vector clinical research in the US for years at about the same time I was working on it (the virus in that case was an adenovirus and not a retrovirus, but the NIH shut down all viral gene therapy clinical trials in the US). Retroviruses, in particular, because they insert into the DNA, can now and then insert into and inactivate an important gene (like a tumor suppressor), have some real risk associated with them. But viral engineering has advanced a good deal since then, and it's great to see all that basic research helping real patients with little hope otherwise.

At least not nearly the way that I understand what happened to the legendary "Decimated Defense" of 2009 and 2010 fame. At least then, it was fairly easy to look at who was manning what positions, look at the "Never Forget" flag (which ran out of real estate), take a glance over at GERG's gopher or whatever that was (what did we decide that was?), and it made perfect sense.
But last year's O didn't make sense to me outside of "Devin Gardner is a warrior but clearly has PTSD" and "O-line is kinda young-ish."
All the facts and circumstances of personnel, game plan, etc. still didn't add up to what was out on the field. Especially since, you know, we always had a great week of practice.

Listing for $800k. Which means you'll end up paying something like 850.

Lists for $1,200,000. And they're going to end up getting that and more... seller's agents won't even return your call if you're not offering at least 50-100k over asking price, and waiving all contingencies to boot.

|9 weeks 4 days ago||I hereby defend the use of a modifier for degree of "unique"||
Using expressions such as "very unique" or "extremely unique" inevitably invites derision on the internets, but I'd like to stick up for it. On a technical level, fine, unique is a binary. It is or it isn't. But our lovely-ish English language can and should absorb additional descriptors where the word itself doesn't necessarily convey the full meaning intended in the sentence.
What if something is unique, but just barely, because of a minor difference between it and the comparable thingies? That's unique, but in name only. On the other hand, if it's entirely revolutionary, "unique" doesn't quite get that across unless you gunk it up along the lines of "unique and highly differentiated" or the like. You want to say that not only is it unique, there's nothing close in terms of degree of novelty of this thing. Economy of language suggests that modifying unique with a degree term might be a smart thing to do.
It's a little like saying "Denard Robinson was by far the best thing that happened during the RR/Hoke era" instead of just saying "Denard was (merely) the best thing that happened..." There is only one "best" so it's every bit as binary as "unique," but there are degrees of bestness (e.g., Secretariat winning the Belmont vs. a photo finish winner), and there are degrees of uniqueness, even if not really, but yeah kinda really.
That said, the idea in question here both sucks donkey balls and is not very unique, if at all. But unless you can point to someone who had the exact same shitty idea, it's technicallly unique. Which most non-identical twin people and non-mass produced manufactured goods are as well. But not very. I'm just sayin'.

|12 weeks 4 days ago||So...||
if every source that doesn't support your point of view is a priori dismissed as biased, what is there to discuss? What's the source for saying almost no one studies it without an agenda? What if the agenda is "let's find out the answer to the question of whether rape is disproportionately common among fraternity men compared to non-frat counterparts on campus"?
Rape is inherently tough to study, no doubt. But there is plenty of peer-reviewed academic literature out there in the journals supporting the basic premise that rape is more likely by fraternity-associated men than other college men.
Three minutes of Googling netted this paper: Foubert, J. D., Newberry, J. T., & Tatum, J. L. (2007). Behavior differences seven months later: Effects of a rape prevention program on first-year men who join fraternities. NASPA Journal, 44, 728-749.
which cites to a couple of studies, mentioned in this passage:
Among men on college campuses, fraternity men are more likely to commit rape than other college men (Bleeker & Murnen, 2005; Boeringer, 1999). Thus, rape prevention efforts often target fraternitymen (Choate, 2003; Larimer, Lydum, Anderson, & Turner; 1999;Foubert & Newberry, 2006). Compared to their peers on college campuses, fraternity men are more likely to believe that women enjoybeing physically “roughed up,” that women pretend not to want sex but want to be forced into sex, that men should be controllers of relationships, that sexually liberated women are promiscuous and will probably have sex with anyone, and that women secretly desire to be raped (Boeringer, 1999). Beyond the aforementioned quantitative findings, qualitative research suggests that fraternity culture includes group norms that reinforce within-group attitudes perpetuating sexual coercion against women. These cultural norms have the potential toexert powerful influences on men’s behavior (Boswell & Spade; 1996).
The cites for the Bleeker and Boeringer papers are:
Bleeker, E. T., & Murnen, S. K. (2005). Fraternity membership, thedisplay of degrading sexual images of women, and rape myth acceptance. Sex Roles, 53,487–493.
Boeringer, S. B. (1999). Associations of rape-supportive attitudes with fraternal and athletic participation. Violence Against Women, 5(1),81–90.
I don't spend enough (or any) time reading gender studies-based journals like these, so couldn't tell you what their impact factors or general reputation in academia are.
Is it really that hard to believe that centers of alcohol-soaked parties and hyper bro-ness might have a statistical uptick in sexual misconduct towards women? Wouldn't it be kinda shocking if that weren't true under the circumstances?

No one ever replies to this by saying "So you're JUSTIFYING my mother dying of cancer??"

he was not going down in the act of catching the ball-- he was going down in the act of running with a ball that he already possessed. If he dived, caught the ball with clear possession, and the ball then came loose after hitting the ground, it's incomplete despite earlier possession. But that's not what happened here.
|28 weeks 15 hours ago||It was not the correct call||
The Calvin Johnson calls against the Lions were the correct call because in those cases, the player was going to the ground in the act of catching the ball. Darboh wasn't; he had clear possession while upright and dived out of bounds, stretching the ball ahead of him, which then came loose upon hitting the ground. But the catch was completed-- he was running-- so there was no need to stretch "completion" to the point where he hit the ground.

I was waiting for red-faced, Brian-Kelly-having-a-stroke RR to erupt after the fumbled exchange, but he just made a frownie face and let it go.
What the fudge?
I just realized I'm having more fun watching this game than any Michigan game I've watched this year. This looks like two organized football teams. *sigh*
|28 weeks 2 days ago||Hahaha.. that's so... cute!||
I find it sweet that you believe people think about the consequences of written records such as emails, texts, and naked selfies.
|28 weeks 2 days ago||Um, no.||
It isn't. It's a slight improvement over the old cardboard cutout of a pizza they used to sell, but the crust is still below average, even compared to other chains, and the toppings are meh. I was excited to try it back when they revamped the product (I'm a pizza geek, sue me) but man, that was a letdown.

|28 weeks 6 days ago||What the hell, reporters...||
no questions about "why was Morris even in the game at the point the late hit occured when it was clear he was overwhelmed, hobbled, and inffective, and you had a healthy Devin Gardner as a plan B? Were you just trying to prove a point to someone instead of trying to win the game? If you were trying to win the game, did you really think you had the best chance with Shane after 100 yards of offense in the 1st half? After the phantom fumble? etc?"
I'm getting pissed about the head-injury firestorm mostly because it's distracting from the underlying football incompetence issues-- and this presser was a perfect example.
|28 weeks 6 days ago||Hope Bo does haunt all the mofos.||
But does it trouble anyone else that Hoke isn't coaching like someone who thinks his job is in jeopardy? We seem to be assuming he's oblivious or simply incompetent, but what if there's a different answer... his job isn't in jeopardy?
The situation reminds of that scene in The Untouchables where Capone is getting buried with negative testimony and yet he's relaxed and smiling, leaving the prosecutor bewildered and wondering "what has Capone got?" (it turned out to be a bribed judge and jury)
Maybe he's got some assurance from DB's office (or somewhere else) that he's coming back no matter what? Would that explain keeping an ineffective and hobbled Shane Morris in the game long into the second half when it was clear Devin Gardner would give the team a better chance of winning?
|29 weeks 6 hours ago||Quite optimistic||
Do you really think we'll manage 3 points against MSU?
|29 weeks 6 hours ago||how did you get all the way up to -61?||
Want to throw in some anti-black, anti-Jew, anti-______ comments in while you're at it?
|29 weeks 20 hours ago||Those two choices||
are not mutually exclusive.
Could be a little of column A and a little of column B. Or a lot of both.
|29 weeks 20 hours ago||It was Braden.||
Braden caught him and started waving to the sideline (the near sideline).
|29 weeks 20 hours ago||Hoke: "Tis but a scratch."||
For the record, Hoke left the Black Knight in the game.
|29 weeks 20 hours ago||It was Braden who waved to the sideline to get Shane out||
right after Shane basically collapsed onto him when he couldn't stand. Shane wanted to stay in.
None of that matters. Hoke saw it. I've always said Hoke is a good guy, but that was a disgraceful showing of contempt for the health of a helpless player.
Fuck Hoke. I'm done with him.
|29 weeks 1 day ago||Alrighty then.||
It begins. Come on kid, light 'em up.
|29 weeks 1 day ago||This team/program misses Bo.||
More specifically, this team misses a guy who could override some of the hard-wired entitlement that creeps into 4 and 5-star guys who have spent much of their young athletic lives being The Man in high school, being showered with sycophantic praise, and need to be broken down a little and rebuilt.
The kids seem to love Hoke. That's cool. But I've said this before and I'll say it again, I'd rather see the trajectory of feelings Bo's former players said they had about him:
As a freshman, you hate his goddamned guts.
As a sophomore, you accept him.
As a junior, you respect him.
As a senior, you love him like he's your father.
|29 weeks 1 day ago||According to Hoke||
we've had a great week of practice. I know this, because he says it every week. We're totally undefeated in practice for over 3 straight years.
|29 weeks 1 day ago||I think the 1% disagree a good bit||
but these guys are like the .001%. Ross is probably more like .000001%.
|29 weeks 2 days ago||I assume "slums" is a typo||

|29 weeks 2 days ago||Totally apt Hitler comparison.||
Few people remember but you could get comp tickets to the Nuremberg Rally with the purchase of two bottles of Becks.
|29 weeks 2 days ago||and that's the most dubious part||
because keeping a petition secret is more or less antithetical to the whole purpose of petitioning.
But I'm sure that when they decided to let the world in on it, they thought, "Of all the media figures in the world, how about an exclusive tip of this super-secret petition to Gregg Henson?"
|29 weeks 2 days ago||Zing!||
"The [Michigan athletic] department now has all the credibility of Pravda, and half the charm."
|29 weeks 2 days ago||I thought this was a terrific take||
and he even put in a plug for Henri the Otter of Ennui!
Staples might have missed how much turmoil surrounds Brandon himself as opposed to will-he-or-won't-he-fire-Hoke. Otherwise, I'd say that's a rather good encapsulation of the current state of affairs by an outsider.
|29 weeks 2 days ago||So, in a word, offense's failures are...||
|29 weeks 3 days ago||This may have been a supremely gloomy UFR, but...||
"The 8-bit Nintendo of constraint plays"? That's gold, Jerry. Gold!
|29 weeks 3 days ago||Come on man.||
First of all, sacks don't tell you anything about numbers of times hit. Maybe Devin's just swallowing the olive at a higher rate.
Second, you think maybe that has a little, just a little to do with who Morris taking his snaps against, and who DG has taken his against? If Morris can keep his head when the ceiling is falling in on him in East Lansing, the next two-and-a-half years will be looking bright indeed. Hope to see that. A competitive game would do a lot to lift the black cloud over A2.
I will say that if the switch was being contemplated at all, better to make it now against this part of the schedule.
|29 weeks 3 days ago||It's that last part that I think people aren't appreciating||
When your protection is breaking down as frequently as it has over the past two years for DG, it's doesn't matter that you occasionally get a nice pocket and time to throw. If your expectation is to not have time to go through your progression, you ain't gonna. You're going to have happy feet and a cluttered mind that is more worried about getting hit than seeing the field. And he's just not seeing the field. And he's got the happy feet. Watch him set up.
What I'm saying is that it's hard to pull a QB out of that mindset once it's set in. If Morris gets the same mindset by learning the line can't be trusted, we're devaluing a future asset when we could just be riding the sunk cost of a jittery DG for the rest of the year. That's assuming he's not physically injured, which he may very well be. But if not, let's not put Shane in a position to develop some very bad and hard-to-unwire habits over the next 9 games.
|29 weeks 3 days ago||Great. Let's traumatize our future QB||
right along with the broken psyche of our current starter. Next year, with upperclassmen on the line, we may actually have a decent (i.e. average) OL. I'd rather he goes out when we're able to protect the kid. Gardner is already broken-- just ride him through the rest of the season. He's a veteran of the shit. He knows how to survive, at least. Somehow.
|29 weeks 3 days ago||So, about that blind side...||
does anyone feel comfortable with Ben Braden protecting the blind side after watching his multiple "ole!" performance last weekend? I thought he spent half the game turning and running back towards Gardner after whiffing. Will be interested in seeing the UFR this week.
|29 weeks 3 days ago||But through it all, we'll always have||

|29 weeks 5 days ago||It finally happened.||
Michigan broke Space Coyote.
|29 weeks 5 days ago||Never a bad time. "Look at that speed! See ya!"|
|29 weeks 5 days ago||Oh please, please, please let this be true||
|29 weeks 5 days ago||Actually, it's not speculation.||
Yes, he has free will, and maybe he'll decide to go coach semi-pro rugby in Australia next season. That is also possible, I grant you. For purposes of discussion, it's not worth consideration.
As far as "how I know," not only do I live in the SF bay area and am constantly inundated with 49ers (and Stanford) news, my upstairs neighbor all last year was a 49er you would know. We'd often walk our dogs in the same park and chit-chat about the team and NCAA. I asked a lot about Harbaugh. Suffice to say, he has the free will to leave for Ann Arbor. That's fine. And I have reasons to believe he just. ain't. coming.
And I'll post accordingly when he comes up in the discussion. I'd love, love, love it if he came, but if we're discussing reasonable possibilities, I think we should leave him out.
|29 weeks 5 days ago||Shout it from the bell tower, man||
I hate seeing the fanbase this delusional. Harbaugh is in his dream job right now. Plan B and C and D and E for him would be other NFL teams. Not Michigan. If he crashes and burns in the league, after enough years of waiting and maybe a year or two as a CBS studio analyst, yes, maybe, send him an invite for coffee in Schembechler Hall and he'll be open to discussion. And probably still say no.
|29 weeks 5 days ago||Well played.||
A fine retort.
|29 weeks 5 days ago||Maybe a little overkill. I'd settle for this:|
|30 weeks 18 hours ago||He's been a net positive.||
In the sense that the whole "Michigan Man" bullshit can't possibly survive this.
If you're qualified, you can coach here.
If you're not qualified, having a Michigan connection doesn't make you qualified.
End of story. We needed this kind of fiasco to finally slay this dragon.
|30 weeks 18 hours ago||I don't have a pic of it||
but I distinctly remember the "Fire Carr" signs in the student section of the 2007 39-7 Oregon game.
|30 weeks 19 hours ago||This about sums it up.||
|30 weeks 19 hours ago||On the other hand||
at least our school didn't drive a football player's rape victim to commit suicide. So there's that.
|30 weeks 20 hours ago||In fairness||
Morris can overthrow it more than Gardner can overthrow it. So not equal.
|30 weeks 20 hours ago||Someone please tweet this same message to Brady Hoke.||
Before the restart. Please.
|30 weeks 20 hours ago||Quick, someone tell the team we restart at 8:47||
but tell Hoke the game has been called and he can go home.
|30 weeks 20 hours ago||one major point of disagreement||
"We all wanted Rodriguez gone."
That was one of the most divisive debates the fanbase has ever had. The W-L record was improving year to year and set up with experienced upperclassmen for the 2011 season, which would be the first time we had RR's guys up and down the roster. Lots of us wanted to at least watch him coach Denard for another 2 years. Instead he got 2 years of Borges and regressed each year, just as Gardner has regressed each year, and the team has regressed each year of the Hoke administration. Rodriguez went off to Arizona to inherit a mess of a team to almost instant respectability and bowl games.
Anyway, I'd take either option C or D as long as we have one absolute golden rule:
NO "MICHIGAN MAN" BULLSHIT.
IF THE CANDIDATE IS NOT QUALIFIED, HAVING A MICHIGAN CONNECTION DOES NOT MAKE HIM QUALIFIED.
That is all.
|30 weeks 21 hours ago||Is this good news or bad news?||
I mean this: I'm watching the game in NoCal with my girlfriend and we split at the suspension of play. We sit outside and enjoy an ice cream on a beautiful day and plan what else we'll do with the afternoon. I had fun.
It occurs to me that this could not possibly have happened a few years ago. There is no such thing as "enjoying the rest of the day" when Michigan loses. Which suggests to me that I've just disconnected from the program in a way I never thought possible.
Ugh. I'm having a nice day. Ugh.
That said, if they restart play, I'm watching. So maybe there's a flicker there still. The idea of Michigan playing without me watching is still even more unthinkable than me enjoying the rest of my day.
|30 weeks 1 day ago||Total yards at half of MSU-EMU: 320-1.||
320-1. I don't think I've ever seen a stat like that in a video game, much less an actual college game.
|30 weeks 1 day ago||This just isn't the issue at all.||
It's a strawman argument to suggest "all NFL players are abusers."
The question that rightfully needs addressing is "how is the NFL dealing with the bad ones?"
The answer to the above has been "as though they either don't care or are completely clueless."
|30 weeks 1 day ago||The drop has been dramatic||
Here's an article from the public radio show Marketplace on the subject (with one of the unintentionally dirtiest titles you'll ever see on a serious article):
This one doesn't get into the numbers so much, but college recruiting (not for athletes, just for regular students) is becoming an issue at many schools in the midwest as the applicant pool declines. It's going to get worse:
The other thing is, they play spring football in places like FL and TX, so it's year round. And kids probably just spend more time outside playing overall, which is where you develop that athleticism. Also, chasing rabbits.
|30 weeks 3 days ago||31-23 bad guys||

|30 weeks 3 days ago||Living the IM QB dream....||
Hey, where was MY call? I QB'd back-to-back IM champions at Michigan! I was totally qualified to hold a clipboard and doodle.
Small world-- that Greenwood kid played at my high school's arch rival, Kinkaid. Old private school in Houston, maybe 120 kids per graduating class. Very far from class 5A football that normally provides the D1 recruits in Texas. Very. Far.
|30 weeks 4 days ago||That appears to be a "snorting cocaine" personal foul by UF||
But the penalty on Brown was 100% worth it for future intimidation value. Who is going to want to tackle this dude in space, ever?

(2010) but The Economist, generally considered a highly respectable publication across most of the spectrum, laid out some of the background to these rankings and the criticisms of various methods for generating the rankings. Enlightening and relatively short read.
|30 weeks 4 days ago||Agree, very good school||
but holy hell, have you ever been to Champ-Urb? Went for a game once. How does anybody not become a hard-core alcoholic at that school? The campus is just out in the middle of miles and miles of open flat farmland-- about as literally in the middle of nowhere as you can get without being in a desert. They should move the whole thing to Chicago and join the existing UIC as flagship of the system.

|30 weeks 6 days ago||I wouldn't complain.||
I live a mile from Levi's Stadium. At least it would make us full of anticipation to be in a third-rate bowl. The meltdown on this site would open a portal to another dimension.
|30 weeks 6 days ago||I think they're ready to bowl a few innings||
Question is, will we stop the game for afternoon tea break?
|31 weeks 2 hours ago||You have to maintain possession after going to the ground||
1. The receiver is still in the field of play after coming down with the ball, which then comes loose: as long as the ball never hit the ground after the receiver goes down, the receiver can regain possession of it and it's still a catch.
2. The receiver falls out of bounds after catching the ball with two feet down (or one knee or whatevs) and the ball comes loose subsequent to receiver hitting the ground: doesn't matter that the ball never hit the ground, it's incomplete. You must complete the catch after hitting the ground, not just the moment you hit the ground with possession.
In Calvin's case in this game, it's neither of these. The ball did hit the ground, even though it was after he went down, so no catch even though he had clear possession when he hit the ground.
|31 weeks 3 hours ago||People in DC have been calling for Cousins to start||
going back to his rookie year in preseason with RGIII, when he largely outplayed him. RGIII went on to have a successful first year, but esp. after his knee injury, the Start Cousins noise has been louder and louder. Cousins has outplayed him at every opportunity and should be starting from what I've seen of the Redskins.
|31 weeks 3 hours ago||Supplies are limited.||

They had a great week of practice, I hear.
|31 weeks 19 hours ago||Small edit||
Hoke is in over his head!!!!!
|31 weeks 20 hours ago||In fairness to the staff||
there already is such a person. It's the QBs job. Always. That said, it's fairly common to see a sideline timeout to save the penalty, but in this situation, the clock restart was so mucked up I don't think it ever occurred to anyone to look.
|31 weeks 20 hours ago||It's been a while (years)||
since we've seen an actual constraint play used in a game. I rubbed my eyes. Good job Nuss.
|31 weeks 20 hours ago||I agree||
I just wish the emotion wasn't "holy shit, I miss Alabama."
|31 weeks 20 hours ago||Hoke is lobbying for jobs when he does that||
including his own. What are we going to do, fire all the players at the end of the year? I think we're going to hear a lot of how great the coaching is at every winning press conference this year. So, like, 4-5 more times.
|31 weeks 20 hours ago||There has never been a week in the Hoke era||
where we didn't have a great week of practice. We're undefeated all week.
|31 weeks 20 hours ago||Punting on 4th and 6 from the 38||
Is still a lousy decision. Punting inside the 40 on a makeable distance, period, is objectively bad. Somewhere on the internets are stats to back that up-- they've been posted enough times on this blog to not require further debate.
And the "coaches know more than you, Ace" line is total bullshit. If that were true, you'd never see bad coaching, I guess? How about the stats backing up teams that spread punt vs. dinosaur punt? Are the numbers bullshit?
