To add on to that point: Rudoph's "round" routes are intentionally so. Much more so than the traditional route tree, Kelly's receivers transition to soft areas of coverage and explore ways to morph around the D.
Smart Football took a crack at explaining some of this when Kelly was hired: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Deconstructing-The-roots-of-Brian-Kelly-s-geni?urn=ncaaf-202207

I was the last copyeditor for TSB (Brian can check my email for factchecking purposes), so I lose one of my jobs. Such is the ways of working in Skynet.
FWIW, it was a really cool group of people. Dan Levy and Andy Hutchins were and are funny and kind and damn cool people. Fact, I interviewed Brian for the Michigan Review back in '05 or '06, so it was awesome to get a daily email from him with his post. Brian's posts were for the most part very lightly edited, his initial quality was pretty solid error-free. But we already knew this, didn't we?
And yes, my gig was probably further proof that MGoBloggers are everywhere.

But disagree abt wrestling. Carwin's actually as big or slightly bigger than Lesnar, he walks around at about 300 lbs. Also, not a bad wrestler himself.
Two other points: (1) this is probably going to be a quick fight, I think everyone will be surprised if it goes longer than one and a half rounds. (2) for those who don't know, this is Carwin's second job, he's a full time engineer, has his Master's in enviro engineering. So if you're a engineering major or geek who's always wanted an ass-kicking avatar, you know where your loyalty should be.

You nailed it on the lackadaisical nature of the team. There were a number of early moments that were very similar to, in basketball parlance, Guy Makes Basket Then Steals Disinterested Inbound Pass From Other Team To Score 4 Points In 3 Seconds And Kill Other Team's Fanbase. Even as the game progressed, I could sense that there was this attitude of "Hey, what's the big deal, we got the horses to come back," only for it to kick in too late.
Even though we lost, I will say that it was awesome watching the attempt at a comeback. We have serious fire power. Chalk me up in the Not Worrying About Winning Another Champeenship column.

I thought you were wanting to see Jon Chait on the field.
The best part him at QB would be that he would probably also write the best and strongest denunciation of his own performance and defenestrate the coaches for such poor decision making that would make them put a fortysomething political writer in the backfield.

Another one-off of your phrase idea is to just remember the first letter of every word in a line from a song, play, book, poem, movie, &c. For capital letters, just the first word in a line or a sentence should suffice.

But to answer the OP's sorta question: as the number of podcasts grows, and as the cheaper/easier/more ubiquitous mp3 players get, and as cars start having greater connectivity to said mp3 players, the closer to extermination local radio will get.
I can fill my entire day with informative and entertaining podcasts with just 15 minutes a night on the iTunes store.

(And while I'm not in the MGoLegal Dept., I am in the MGoJournalist wing so I know a bit about this)
Slander and libel charges have a few hurdles to clear if they are to stick. Also, keep in mind that the burden is on the plaintiff- in my opinion one of the perks of living in a society that protects free speech. Anyway, the hurdles are (roughly) as follows:
1. The statement was made (check)
The problem is this: Drew Sharp is an opinion sports journalist for the Freep. Most every comment he makes he can claim as an opinion statement rather than a reporting statement. If a court found this to be the case (and let's face it, they would), there's really no slander charge to be found.
Slander and libel are really thrown around way too liberally for what our justice system and Constitution provide. Love it or hate it, our governmental policy is designed to protect citizens from willfully malicious communications that harm their ways of life. It doesn't protect us from sniveling assholes who think their only way to protect their dying industry is through controversy and pandering (all the while killing the medium for fellow journalists *coughcoughcough*) making opinionated and cheap comments.
As an aside, I find Sharp's comments even more offensive in the light of the justice system (as opposed to football recruits/sports in general). This is a man who is deliberately ignoring the woeful history of our country's criminal system (especially in relation to minorities) to make a silly and unentertaining talking point. I'm sure at some point in the future there will be a sports-and-justice issue where he is on the other side, and he will take the opportunity to then wield the race stick to berate all who disagree and claim a bereaved status to draw sympathy. I'm sorry Drew: when you say the things you've said in the past few days, you've cast your lot, and it's not with those of us who presume innocence before guilt.
|4 years 5 weeks ago||Good conclusion, bad reasoning||
Considering that Northwestern makes close to double what Texas does in television revenue, considering that Texas has less than 2 decades of history with the Big 12, considering that their two rivals (OU and TAMU) can be easily scheduled with room for a Nu-Big 12 conference, and considering that the rest of the U of Texas staff, accountants, research scientists, professors, and grad students would crawl over broken glass to join CIC, they're dominant role in the Big 12 really holds little sway.
That doesn't mean, however, that I think they will come. Growing up in Texas, I've had enough experience with obstreperous blowhard politicians that demonize everything north of the Red River to imagine a scenario where Texas politicians sign some kind of political block to ensure that the Longhorns aren't made to go play in the land of the Yankees.
Trust me: Texas isn't nearly as satisfied with being a big fish in a (relatively) podunk pond. I can say pretty confidently that the members and numbercrunchers of the university would love the Big 10. Other Texans and UT supporters would be initially more skeptical.

Even though I do wonder what it would've been like to spend 4 years there, and even though it seems like nearly all UM athletics have been on a near-historic decline since my decision to transfer (came in a few days after the '05 Rose Bowl), no regrets here. Part of the decision was based on sports stuff, but part was the academics and part was the prospect of living in Ann Arbor.

"A "STUPIDIST" is someone who subscribes to the Stupidism School, founded in Everytown, USA in the 2000's, which suggested that society was STUPID and that the most appropriate response from the creative class was to engage in a nonlogical sophistry consisting of nonconforming lolcats pictures and applying for admission to schools of higher learning located in the state of Ohio. A Stupidist would most likely subscribe to the idea of The Show Two And A Half Men and propose a greater adherence to the Irrational Firing of A Football Head Coach After Two Years school of hermeneutics."

We Drinkers of Solitude are a proud bunch. There is NO shame in drinking alone, for any reason: a neighbor's having a bar mitzvah for a firstborn that you weren't invited to, your wife is sleeping with the local elementary's crossing guard, we can't seem to find a way to stop Isaiah Williams, your pillow's too fluffy unless you're too drunk to recognize it. Here in the middle of the MWC, I can say that most people don't think MWC needs to change a thing. They've got 2-3 national quality teams, a couple of respectable middle-of-the-packers (see: Air Force playing tough at Minnesota), and some scrubs. In other words, it's already a BCS-worthy conference. Look at their bowl record as a conference in this decade: 21-15.
Boise's got an incentive to join the MWC, not the other way around.
Also, anyone who's suggesting Utah State join the MWC is huffing something I want in on. Only Utah needs to play them in their rivalry game. No one else cares about them.

- As bad as Illinois might be, I'd think Missouri would at least be worthy of a 20's ranking. They were impressive. Or maybe Illinois made them look impressive. Or maybe vice versa. Whatever, it's early season ranking.

He'd also have posts like "OT: How To Spot Communists in Your Own PTA", or "Why Corporal Punishment Should Legalized In Hospitals", or "Recruiting California, plus why 'Organic' is fraudulent!!1!".
I guess I'll only have my dreams.
|4 years 31 weeks ago||Mixed feelings||
On the one hand, it's totally awes that a chunk of our players are proud enough of their bodies to spend the majority of the time shirtless (I don't recall anyone really flaunting their Gittle-handles, except for Tim Jamison). On the other hand, I can't help but fear for the future, when we have 4 full classes that have had time in the Barwis-Hot Treatment. Are we going to have four score of men non-jiggling their entire summers without shirts? How can we learn to utilize the TE position if we are always re-enacting Hollister photo shoots? If there is one thing Zoolander has taught us, is it not that when men who all think their bodies are hot shit get together, it ends in gas station accidents and horrific third-degree "Walk Off" injuries?
However, if our newfound confidence leads us to be the first team to bring back the late-80's/early-90's Exposed Midriff Jerseys, that would be fantastic. That Eric Bienemy styled stuff was great.
And finally: Gott in Himmel, Mike Martin is starting to take the next step in Barwis's plan, the step where you start to look like a player from N64's NFL Blitz.

Although I'm a bit more sanguine to the idea of some music in the stadium than most, I do sympathize with the absolutists in their desire to maintain our distinctive culture. If we get Saliva or We Will Rock You or anything from Andrew W.K., Thar Be Major Suck, so let's never put anything in at all.
That being said, if we could be assured that it would be different music that was either distinctively off-kilter or eccentric, I would hope that could be a better compromise between the Rodriguezite modernists and the Yostraelis. For example, the fact that the raucous Liverpool fans, many without all their teeth or brain cells, tearfully belt out "You'll Never Walk Alone", a song from goddamned Carousel, is delightful.
It also has to be said that if we start piping in pump-up videos during a game (a move I do not support btw), we will beat the everliving shit out of MSU's increasingly dated "This is Sparta!" crap:
Maybe we can get C. Thomas Howell to come out a la Patrick Stewart and direct MMB.

but I'm going to save my outrage for something I actually expect to be commendable. Forde is like most WWL writers, paid to fly at the 30,000 foot level and swoop in to write pieces that posture themselves as the gritty insights of a man in the trenches. He of course can't spend the time to know the details of every program he covers, but that doesn't prevent him from acting like he just spent the past 365 days as a fly on RR's office wall. If you were expecting anything but this kind of piece, I'll suggest you haven't spent enough time on ESPN.com (not that I would blame you).
Can we now talk about the fact that Adam Rittenburg looks like Rod, the gay Republican puppet from Avenue Q?

And also, how the hell does TomVH have only 158 points? The man is one of a few people in this world who puts actual sweat-equity into feeding our Michigan obsessions. New rule: you actually go out and spend time interviewing players who have only .5% chance of attending UM, you get multiple points. Hell, we should be giving him points just on principle alone. He deserves nothing less.
|4 years 33 weeks ago||The "swagger" and "taking control of the team"||
don't signify to me that Forcier is "too cocky" or being presumptive, they tell me something we could all see last year: there was no functional leader (at least on the offensive side of the ball). This is not to shit on anyone from '08, really. It's simply to say that, from all reliable accounts, we were struggling for some center-of-gravity throughout the entire season. The staff was allegedly far more irritable last year than they are this year, the quarterback position was a place of tension (to put it mildly), and there was the general stress of suffering through the worst season in our program's history. In other words-- everyone was new, and we lacked the unique leadership personality that could (maaaybe, quite possibly) guide us through a rough first year. We were vacant in that spot, and Tate looks good by comparison.
Again, no criticism from this poster: changing coaches is a chaotic and disrupting activity, and I think RR and the group have handled it relatively well. But I WILL say that someone as charismatic and centrally-minded as Tate Forcier, someone who welcomes the leadership role, will be doubly prominent in contrast to the disarray that will be remembered as the 2008 Wolverines.
Of course, I have my homer-isms as much as the next man. I fall asleep most nights with visions of truly deceptive zone-reads and accurately-thrown bubble passes in my head, but that's probably because I also fall asleep most nights drunk on boxes of rose wine.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is one of the best movies of this decade. Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer are hysterical, and the plot (by Shane Black of "Lethal Weapon" fame) is both clever and well-crafted. Furthermore, the fact that the movie grossed $4.2m domestically and $15m worldwide, I'm pretty comfortable with the "underrated" label.
My last attempt to encourage you to rent the movie is this: the last line of the movie is: "And for all you viewers in the Midwest, we're sorry we said 'fuck' so much."
It's at least worth a 2-day rental or Netflix gamble, right?

I found MGoBlog back in the Blogspot days (if I recall, someone sent me the link to his Season Preview for the 2005 season before that year's ND game). I think one of my higher web honors has been having something I did linked to on this blog. I interviewed Brian for the Michigan Review a few years back, and he was kind enough to mention it.
As for being a fan, I had never set foot in the state of Michigan until the day before I had my first class. I transferred from Pepperdine at mid-year, and joined the Michigan faithful just in time to have the last-second Texas field goal in the Rose Bowl stabbed into my stomach.
I'm now so far down the rabbit hole that I freak out family and friends. This blog (and Johnny at RBUAS and Joey at Straight Bangin') has been instrumental in making me care more about the Wolverines than any team or player I've ever followed.

|4 years 48 weeks ago||I'm just a layman||
In fact, I'm a vegetarian endurance athlete, so I'm waaay over my head in terms of muscle gain/weightlifting. But a couple points in response:
1. My 20-25 lbs trim and 10-15 lbs gain estimate were not based on the time between today and the first game, I was just speculating that that amount of change was possible in the period from January to the first game, so about 9 months. I could very well still be wrong, but it wasn't based on the 20 week window.
2. Since I know next to nothing about weight training, I was also basing my guesses on this old Barwis interview with Rittenberg: http://tr.im/ixjz Barwis mentions that in his first chunk of time with Brandon Graham, from January to July, he took BG from 287 to 250 and then rebuilt him to 269. (That's 27 lbs off and 19 lbs readded for all you Sociology majors) I don't know how much muscle and fat was added/subtracted, but the 25 and 15 I offered, IMHO, seemed conservative, especially if Will is in worse shape than BG was (highly likely).
I'll take the back seat in this discussion with any MGoBoarders, however, since it's almost guaranteed you all know more about this than I.
|4 years 48 weeks ago||Beg to differ||
From everything I hear/read from coaches, they love his talent but think he's got a LONG way to go in terms of conditioning and technique.
Apparently Cass Tech's instructions for Will were akin to saying "alright, just go act like Fezzik in the middle of the line and you'll probably get some sacks and definitely disrupt the play."
Pure speculation, but my guess is that Will loses 20-25 lbs of fat (and maybe adds 15 lbs of muscle) by fall and gets some second string work to start off. I see it being a little less than what Mike Martin got last year.
3 years from now, though, Will Campbell could be positively Branch-ian.

I'd love to see your defense that it's stayed MORE faithful than most movies. Watchmen the Mediocre Movie is about 65% of Watchmen of Alan Moore.
This is off the top of my head:
- No squid, instead made it about Dr. Manhattan
I'm pretty sure I could sniff other ones out as well if I gave it a minute. For comic book movies especially, Sin City was far more adherent to the source material. Hell, the author was co-director of that movie.
And I'm also pretty sure that Me and Bobby McGee and Leonard Cohen are NOT in the graphic novel.
Let's stop this Watchmen discussion here. I love that I can hide my complete nerd-ery from you guys here in the sports intarwebz. Plz don't draw me out by making simple-minded comments about nerd stuff.

I watch far too many movies, and I don't want to overload the room so I'm going to take your "last few months" to mean January to now.
Taken - come for the awesome violence, stay for the xenophobic patriarchy.
Coraline - I know it sounds pedo for a 24-year old guy to be pimping a 3D movie with a 11-year old heroine, but anyone who watches it will be blown away, visually speaking. It's the future of the media, IMO. 3D has moved into FTW territory in the last year or two. Plus, it's from Neil Gaiman /nerding
The Last House On The Left - only if you like horror movies. It's not like The Ring, where people where non-horror guys can like it.
I Love You, Man - only see it if you are expecting a pretty average, coasting effort from some really funny actors. I'm probably overexposed to it, but I'm feeling that the Apatow clan is moving towards fridge-nukeage.

|4 years 49 weeks ago||From The Colorado Desk||
We'll take whatever we can get. It's amazing how Willingham-esqeuly Cutler has squandered the support and good will of Bronco fans. Having ignored owner Pat Bowlen's phone calls for 10 days has set some people OFF. Everyone rightly sees it as a dick move.
In terms of predicting what will happen, JMacD has shown that his career at the Pats is a pretty good indicator of his taste in qbs. For example, he's brought in Chris Simms, someone that Belichek almost signed a year ago. He seems to like the intelligent-but-not-really-physically gifted type.
What would be ideal, of course, for this UM alum is if the Broncos can woo Matt Gutierrez off the Patriots practice squad.
THAT would be awesome.

I know how awesome it is that my home state is Colorado, Home of South Park, Awesome Powder, and Fairly Hot Local Chicks. But it's surprising how strong a hold Ann Arbor has on my brain. I'd never been in the state of Michigan in my life until my first day on campus, and much of the state pales in comparison to my home, but dammit A-Squared is a pretty sweet place.
If you're in Ann Arbor, anybody, cherish it. There aren't many college towns like it.
Side Benefit of Colorado: I get first shot at all the latest Leopold Bros. liquors since they're now out of Denver. They're growing rapidly, and their stuff is bangin.

|4 years 50 weeks ago||Another Possibility||
Steven Berlin Johnson set up a site called http://outside.in , which tries to aggregate news and stories based on geography. It's still sorta beta IMO (you'll notice that right now the site relies heavily on MLive and the AAN), but there's definitely some potential there. Wherever you find yourself, you can help contribute as well. You can register your blog/site to outside.in, and they'll do a pretty good job of autotagging it (at least if you include the full name of the location in the post).
I don't think it will replace older-styled media like the AAN, the Seattle P-I, or the Rocky Mountain News, but in this chaotic transition time, I think Outside.in, as well as the Ann Arbor Chronicle, are very promising possibilities.
Guys like Clay Shirky and Dave Winer have been harping on this stuff for years: rather than trying to preserve the format and style of the newspaper (a ultimately losing proposition anyway), this period calls for extreme levels of experimentation and innovation. We can't possibly guess what the future will look like, but the best we can do is try any and everything and something will arise.
It doesn't make the job-loss any easier for those involved, though. That just sucks.

This is really a gentle attempt at sarcasm, but: public transportation? Really?
I don't think that Comerica left Detroit for the great Dallas public transportation.
I don't think Leopold Brothers left Ann Arbor for Denver because of the Mile High City's great public transportation.
I don't think the hundreds workers who moved to Wyoming moved for the public transportation.
In fact, all three places I mentioned have gawdawful public transit systems. There are a BUNCH of reasons why Detroit/Michigan has fallen as far as it has. Public transportation has to be like 2,459th on the list of most-important ones.
|5 years 1 week ago||Probably not happening||
I'm out here in Denver, and the sports radio chatter is really heated. To boil down the multivaried opinions from those in the know is:
1. Jay Cutler's sorta been a whiny jerk for a while about coaching and the transition from Shanahan to McDaniels. He also, while talented, isn't a winner. Elway had as little talent back in the day and he managed to eke out 10 wins, something Cutler's never done.
and the other side...
2. Jay Cutler, much MUCH beloved by Denver fans, is a talent you're not going to find very often, and there are few players who you'd rather have. McDaniels and Xanders (the GM) were douche-y in their management, misleading Cutler and refusing to admit that they contemplated the trade.
In any case, the Cutler-to-Lions meme needs a third actor if its going to get off the ground. We have shite for a back up (w00 Patrick Ramsey!), so we'll need a replacement.

This post shouldn't be viewed as too "rah-rah" about Gerg, hopefully it's just an added shot of reality to some of the usual hyperbole.
I'm still pretty cautious about Robinson's hire, but I definitely don't share the same angst/pessimism some of our brethren feel. By my lights, if you win back to back Super Bowls (w00t Broncos!), you've got some talent. I guess I place Gerg somewhere between Will Muschamp and Mike DeBord, which I guess could be almost anyone :)
It's good, though, to hear from a guy who's been under him as a player. Just some perspective, that's all...
