The error was a killer. 5 runs unearned? |
| 1 week 4 days ago | Good call because it worked out. |
Dreisenga had managed to get through similar situations all game. The lead runner was on with an error. The hit looked like duck snort to me. For most coaches I have known- lesser personages than Hutch- they would wait until the game was tied to make the change. Hutch put it all on herself by making the change at that time, and on Wagner coming in with a ton of pressure. Maybe because Michigan does not have a true ace, but an A and an A1, she has more confidence to change earlier? I still wonder, when they get in the big tournament if one of them will get the ace treatment. (edit) I looked up the Nebraska series boxscores, as a small sample size for instance: Game 1, Dreisenga starts, Wagner relieves down 0-2, M loses 6-1 (pitching change does not work so well.) Game 2: Wagner starts, falls behind 0-3 after 5, no pitching change, M wins (ace treatment?), Game 3, Dreisenga starts (ace treatment, starting 2 of 3 in key series?), pitching change in 6th with 4-2 lead, M loses 4-7. I like the way the pitching change worked out last night, but I don't know what I would do next time in the same circumstance. |

The call they never get is when a body part gets hit in the strike zone. It is not safe to give up the inside to the batter. Sometimes the only thing to do is to be "effectively wild". |
| 2 weeks 3 days ago | You should know. |
That's a pitcher doing her job, right? Drill them in the posterior. Don't hurt them, and don't give up the tater. |

Sure, sometimes I was right in the backfield, or right behind the secondary. I never complained, because you don't see what you don't see. is for any rule change that favors the defense, and favors front line football players. Also, I'll bet that whoever invented the foul did not do so with the intention of giving an advantage to the rule-breaker. A foul should hurt the team that fouls. |

Somehow I find myself unable to see the UM spring game. (But thank goodness for WTKA). To make matters worse, I found myself surrounded by red nylon jackets last night, and this morning was awakened to a chorus of "Across the Field" by the Sweet Adelines in my hotel lobby. I replied with my own solo version of Hail to the Victors from my balcony. Instead of finding any way to view our game, I can see the video board of Paul Brown stadium from my hotel. How did this happen to me? When did OSU decide to invade Cincinnati? |
| 5 weeks 4 days ago | I don't care to start threads |

| 6 weeks 14 hours ago | I spent 32 hours |
from Monday noon through last night in the air transport system, due to the Colorado storm, wearing my M gear. Before and after the game, I was dumbfounded by the amount of support I received from strangers all across the country. There is something special about Michigan, for sure. Of about 200 people packed into a Denver airport bar, all but 2 cheered loudly for Michigan. I felt like I was among friends. |
| 6 weeks 1 day ago | Compare his sideline demeanor |
to Pitino's. The way Pitino jumped and danced and complained about calls, you would think he was getting the short end of the stick. But Beilein- under control, professional, an example of how he would have his players behave. I could not be more proud. Who wants complainers like Izzo or Crean? They distract from a sport that ought to exist for the players. |

I don't think so anyway, so I'll repeat myself. At half time it looked to me like they had not had time to scout Michigan since Friday night. They did not seem to think Nik was a threat, even after (3) 3's. I said at halftime that we were leading by one Stauskas, and we ended up winning by a Stauskas, too. I was glad for the short turnaround between games. |
| 7 weeks 2 days ago | Against the Florida zone |
we increased the score delta, but to my eyes it did befuddle Trey a little bit. He could not seem to do his usual penetration. The outside sharpshooters saved the day at that point. I was happier when they came out of the zone and Michigan could play its usual and familiar offense. (You could probably prove me wrong with statistics, but is that fair?) Somehow the B1G network knows that Michigan shoots 52% against the zone. edit PS. As Boeheim talked about how you can't practice against his zone, I wondered if it would help to practice against a 7- man zone. |
| 7 weeks 3 days ago | Thanks. |
I've been waiting for some perspective to appear here. This happened to me. No one cried or prayed or threw up. I did not really feel pain until after surgery. I could get around on crutches the next day. I never had athlete speed, but I could run distance after a year or so. |

but it looked to me like both OSU and MSU could not adjust when "ticky-tac" fouls were called. It is hard to adjust when ticky-tac fouls are your game plan. I wonder if the same refs call B1G games differently than when officiating other games. After all, what do you do when every player is fouling at the same time on the same play? I was curious to see if Michigan met OSU in the final, if the officials would revert to calling it as a B1G style game. We won't find out this year. |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | The specifics |
were to get him in the air, and get him in foul trouble. Not a whole gameplan, just what McGary was going to try with Withey. After those two attempts, I did not see any more fakes or flops. I wonder how often, when we see something like the nutcracker play or Zeller's fake nutcracker play, we are seeing the coach's hints being carried out clumsily, or we are seeing players' own ideas. Not one bit to compare John Beilein's tactics to Tom Crean's, for headfakes and taking charges are nothing like staging a flagrant. Speaking of which, in IU's loss, I thought Zeller upended that Syracuse guy on purpose, and risked a concussion. He was pretty frustrated by then. |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | Oops |
On a screen bigger than 2"x3" I see it was Mitch. Same haircut, same physical style of play. |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | I wonder. |
I think Michigan was prepared to give up the 2 and go to 2nd OT. The instructions may have been to not foul and guard the 3 point line. We had been snakebit enough all season by desperation 3's, and we won the RPS game. |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | McGary announced the plan |
in pregame interviews, which seemed unwise. The plan was to get Withey out of the game in foul trouble. Mitch pump-faked his first shot, fooling no one. Then he flopped his first chance on defense, giving up an easy 2. Plan B worked much better, bodying Withey away on D and making him choose between defending Burke or defending McGary on O. Always have a plan B! |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | Thank Nik |
From the article it sounds like Self wanted to foul instead of allowing a 3, but Nik's pancake may have saved the day. |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | I think the refs thought do, too. |
They had him under a microscope after that. Maybe, instead of a flagrant 2, they decided to bench him, in effect. |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | Grudging and gradual respect |
for "Bitch McGary". I can't believe that Spartan Tailgate really represents MSU grads. The few I know are not that stupid, and they do know some about basketball. I was disappoint for the B1G that they did not beat Duke last night. 3 in the final 8 would have been a good thing. |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | Wow. |

So it is Good Friday, and the biggest Michigan basketball day in a generation or so. If I stay home, and Michigan loses, will it be my fault? If I go to church and Michigan wins, I will have missed it. If I watch the game in church on my cell phone, is that the worst of all options? These are not religious comments, just superstition where the rubber meets the road. I know we have some clergy on the board. Perhaps they have some advice. |

I think that Big Ten softball has all women coaches, whereas it seems to me that men are more prominent in the SEC and PAC 12 conferences. Do you think the Big Ten is intentional about that? Do you think men and women take different approaches to softball, in that men are likely coming from a baseball background? How would your own experience serve you in coaching college softball, should the event ever arise? |
| 10 weeks 6 days ago | also Heisman Armageddon |
Last fall I tried to engage some of our visitors from the south to discuss the topic of how Gardner compares to Miller, and they would have none of it. I think, if they both stick around there are going to be lots of comparisons, and at least two big showdowns. Miller is Tebow for Meyer's system, but Gardner is just as fast and quite elusive, besides being a better passer. If BuckeyeJonRoss and Urbanwarfare are still hanging around the blog I would like them to sound off. |

I heard about that last summer from a friend who coaches in LA. What seemed odd to me was that he said the issue is she does not want to pitch anymore, but the coaches did want her to pitch. In my experience, pitchers always want to pitch, but this is the 2nd situation like this that I know of this year. |

He seems like an empty suit to me, or a tv news reader. |

I don't know how many of those last 14 consecutive free throws were intentional, but it seems like they ought to be in a separate category. At a certain point our only hope was to swap threes for free throws in the hope that they might miss one. There is a free throw advantage for any team that has such a high average margin of victory, I should think. |
| 15 weeks 3 days ago | Recalibration time? |
Our theoretical or hypothetical B10 champ was to be the team that defended its home court and lost road games only to contenders. Maybe not now. Indiana lost at home already. OSU and MSU have road losses to non-contenders. Until Michigan loses at home or loses on the road to a non-contender they are still in the driver's seat. I say recalibrate because all other contenders already have demerits, Michigan just lost to the only contender with a home loss, and has only one chance left for a break-out win, at contender MSU. I hope I can sleep now with that off my mind. |

As long as The Game continues to be Thanksgiving weekend I will probably never go. I haven't decided if I should save the tickets for a random act of kindness or use them to finance the rest of the season. I expect they will appear on the MGo spreadsheet when they are available. Last year the tickets almost went to the family of an OSU player who we know quite well. I thought better of it. Does anyone else have a problem with the move of the game to Thanksgiving weekend? |

| 15 weeks 6 days ago | @ OSU |
I am not saying that officiating was bad at OSU, but I think the slow start there was due to the fact that OSU came out "grinding meat and rattling molars", and it took Michigan too long to adjust to the kind of game the officials were going to allow. Even after Michigan recognized what was going on, this is not the kind of team that will take full advantage of physical play. I think Indiana prefers much the same style of play and officiating that Michigan does, but future games against MSU, OSU, and Wisconsin may well be decided in advance by what kind of game the officials decide to call. |

as always, and pastoral, as we might expect from someone trained or experienced in family counselling. As I recall, you had some hard sayings in the PSU threads that I did not enjoy, but you were probably correct. Tripp Wellbourne Indentity, who is one of my favorite posters, makes the point, I think, that college ties do not equal family ties. It is a useful analogy, though. At one point our connections to the university were voluntary, but if we are going to proudly claim a connection to Denard, or Tom Brady, or Mike Wallace, or whoever, there are also a few Dr. H.H. Holmes and Ted Kaczynski's up in the attic to account for. I don't really equate any of them with my family, but I would love to have Jim Harbaugh over for Thanksgiving dinner, and I hated running into my dentist at dinner in Disney World. |
| 17 weeks 9 hours ago | Hardly surprising to me, |
that someone as hyper-competitive as Harbaugh would say or do whatever he thinks will help him. Also, when I was too young to know better, I wanted to be a Yankee. With a little more maturity I came to prefer the Tigers. Now, if it were in any way useful to me, I can honestly claim to have been a Yankee fan. I agree that he should top the list of a future coaching search, and I don't think it will be out of the question. As someone posted earlier, a little bird also told me that his decision to go to the '49ers was Mrs. Harbaugh's call, and it came at a tender point in their child's nativity. Who can doubt that it is possible for him to wear out his welcome in San Francisco? |

In a column about Father Hesburgh yesterday, he cited a requirement about 2 math courses, which I did not understand. Whether they are required for admission or for graduation, I do not know. His point was that those requirements are what separate ND from the others, in recruiting. |

It is quite a tribute to inspire a follower like that. That must be who negged you for no apparent reason when you were posting from the Outback Bowl. |
| 19 weeks 2 days ago | Gophers |
I understand why most everyone seems to be identifying Minnesota as the threat, but what the heck happened up there in the first half yesterday? If they score 17 in the first half on Michigan, I think it will be over. Granted, they made up for it in the 2nd half, but what kind of team scores 17 at home against Northwestern? |

They should hire you to run these numbers before naming the MVP. It seems like you have also made a case for Ellington: 67 vs 27 for the Clowney hit. (Two/too/to/tew, rabble rabble). |

| 19 weeks 5 days ago | Maybe this has already been suggested. |
Now I think that the official making the call did not agree with the spot, and had already made up his mind about the first down. If I recall, I think he started to make the 1st down motion once or twice earlier, before the chain was stretched. Also, the guy holding the pole seemed to lean it back over the ball to make it look better. There were a few times this bowl season where I noticed officials on each end of plays spotting the balls in different locations. Maybe the guy who placed the ball saw it short, while the guy making the call had already decided first down and did not even want the measurement. Captain Obvious, I suppose. |
| 19 weeks 6 days ago | Why we hate ND |
ND competes with Michigan, in it's own backyard, for the midwest/academic/big-time sports/tradition trophy. Alabama can wear the football factory crown without bothering us too much, but those ND graduation rates and academic rankings bother us. Northwestern graduation rates and academic rankings bother us a little, too, but we have big-time sports, so there. Someone mentioned already that ND fans are not self-aware. They are also oblivious to the rest of college sports. No wonder they have their own network and no league- they are the only thing that matters. I know, Fremeau and all, but the average ND fan that I have known does not care a flying flip about college sports anyplace else. |

I was very frustrated that they never showed the right foot inbounds, much less possession and the foot inbounds. There must be such a view, because of the linked video. I can't stop it at the right instant to see it, however. Someone out there must have some HD skills for us. Maybe Brian has seen the one millimeter. Absent evidence to the contrary, I am free to ascribe to a make-up call conspiracy theory. |
| 20 weeks 4 hours ago | Despite being a codger, |
I liked the helmets. I even liked the close-up shots of the players which showed the helmets with the shoulders. Ordinarily, I would not have been so keen to see our numbers, except I was always straining to see if Denard was in the backfield, or under center, or playing the electron receiver position. Unfortunately, there were dreads at most of those positions, which made it nearly impossible to tell. However, I did notice that as the shadows drew longer, the numbers became clearer, an old elvish trick. |

I can't think of any product of your digestion that might be bearable to us sissies. I don't just mean your digestion, in particular, but the results of anyone's digestive processes. My dog, for some reason, seems especially attracted to such things. |

I noticed that Outback used the wrong M logo in some of their advertising. Perhaps they did not pay us for the right to use the correct one, or they recycled an old graphic, or the athletic department can extract some cash from them for using the old one. |

These have been my favorite diaries this year. On the 9.99 first down, I thought the wrong signal just came out of his arms. Seems like a mistake I could make. I would have preferred to get that call overturned in exchange for the following touchdown call. I never did see that his right foot landed inbounds. Possible make-up call? |

I don't quite get the moderation on this thread. Maybe someone is playing whack-a-mole. I think that Michigan is different than many liberal arts colleges. I think they are less interested in overall scores and grades than in your math and science scores and grades, if you are applying to engineering. A 34 ACT in math might be more helpful than an overall 34. They may also be more keyed in to your demographic profile than some other schools. |

When he is back for kickoffs, I enjoy how he rocks his head and flexes his arms like the Fox robot. I just saw some of the Northwestern game for the first time and noticed Taylor Lewan doing it too. You should plan a road-trip to DiMarini next summer. I had hoped Hutch would recruit a shortstop for the other host team, the Chill, a couple of years ago. She hit the leadoff homerun against Traina for Georgia last season, and was being recruited by Northwestern and OSU early on. |

Michigan is missing a level of travel softball. The last time I checked, the state had only one gold-level team, which must play gold level tournaments out-of-state. Local kids are at a disadvantage in Michigan, and I don't know which way things are moving. (I waited a few days to post this. Hopefully, only softball people see it.) |
