1 week 1 day ago Hey Mr. Smith, the Artist

First off, just want to say thanks for 4 great years in the winged helmet. Tough as nails and you always came to work, and it showed.

Just curious, from one fellow artist to another... What's your favorite medium, and whose work are you passionate about? I know I've seen pics of you working in acrylic before, but do you do pencils, pen & ink, oil, etc...?

Keep up the great work and God bless Pahokee

1 week 1 day ago Hahaha

Children yes, cats NEVERRRRR

I remember an entire thread devoted to this subject a few years ago, and I'm a solid OVER guy. But the aesthetics just screamed under for this composition. Good eye.

7 weeks 2 days ago What if

This whole sitting at a computer reading MGoBlog IS JUST A DREAM!!! What if there IS no Tacopants?!

Honestly, no. I have no plans to pull some cheesy sitcom solution or comic book ret-con to wrap this storyline. Without going all exclusive story, I can say that this idea is as old as the strip itself. Last January I had thoughts of putting a character inside the Glick to interact with caricatures of players and staff. My initial concept was a new character, perhaps a cousin, with a bizarre threshold for pain that earned the spot. I dropped it simply because I didn't want to start adding new characters so early in the game.

And then I kind of forgot about it until a few weeks ago. When the writers started talking about spring practice it hit me-- and I just thought I could streamline the idea by finding a way to make it Desmond. It won't be a permanent development-- but I'm toying with the idea of keeping him on the team for next season. What do you guys think... Finish it now or let him play in the fall?

7 weeks 5 days ago I know

Totally torn between which gets the live view & which gets DVR'd...

8 weeks 1 day ago Well, not really

If you've been following along, Desmond can no longer "get" hurt. It just looks bad.

11 weeks 15 hours ago Today's Friday Fun
11 weeks 4 days ago One of the more difficult challenges

This site faces is the democratic and entitled mass-ownership ideals that come hand in hand with user-generated content. The blog is, by Brian's at least partial design (more or less), for Michigan Men by Michigan Men, and as the readership continues to grow and grow, so too does the belief that 'hey, we're all a part of it' and deserve to get what we want from it. It's becoming increasingly hard to satisfy the diversity of such a huge following without moving away from the niche content source that made MGoBlog emerge in the first place. So what's a shaggy blog dude to do?

In other words, dude creates blog with unique writing style and perspective. It blows up, and millions of readers descend upon dude's blog. Dude invites the readers to contribute openly and freely to make site more autonomous and interesting. Finally, dude gets criticized for the blog's original style?

Yes, not all of the writers are Brian... But it's his choice to make them official contributors, so consider them fully endorsed by the site's creator. I don't think the site has evolved as much as the readers have evolved, and not necessarily for the better. Since I started reading this site it's always baffled me why so many celebrated members and blog personalities disappear. They don't stop being Michigan fans, and more often than not they still devote the same amount of time at other destinations. So what is it then? It's the mass readership here. It changes, and it affects the overall climate, content, and quality of MGoBlog from time to time.

In other words, it's not Seth, it's you.

11 weeks 5 days ago A little bit

This February wave started off soooo strong, lost its wind tonight...

11 weeks 5 days ago What a difference a season makes

Andrea's gone from one of the better characters to someone I'm ready to see get bitten. Annoying.

12 weeks 1 day ago Poor logic

You are attempting to use the words "impossible" and "Denard" in the same sentence. Where have you been the last four years?!

12 weeks 5 days ago How about the driver of the van?

In the big helmet, looked female...? I don't remember anyone taking her out... Is he/she still on the premises??

12 weeks 5 days ago I think a part of me fears

I'll be seeing Denard on the field next year.

Just. Like. Rick.

13 weeks 17 hours ago Listening to the same thing

as all those Russian people who get off on videotaping themselves driving around in the bleak wasteland on their way to work.

In other words, I'm listening to meteor-induced sonic booms... and Mariah Carey?  In RUSSIA??!

13 weeks 2 days ago Don't Judge Me

I still want to look around at other schools, but I was offered an extra $800, two tattoos and an '03 Celica to announce my verbal earlier this week. Not even Ole Miss offered that kinda cash.

14 weeks 2 days ago Delicious, my friend.  Purely

Delicious, my friend.  Purely delicious.

14 weeks 2 days ago Fixed

Sorry... Last year I read a great article about how some of the industry pro's of the past write the script to fill the balloon-- meaning, they put the balloon into the artwork and then tried to choose just the right words to get their point across AND fill up the balloon in a visually pleasing manner at the same time.

It's harder than it sounds... and I was also multi-tasking at the same time. Sorry, and thanks for the catch.

15 weeks 2 days ago Dude

I couldn't even imagine the toll it took to fight through all that. God bless your son and family,my friend

15 weeks 2 days ago Yep

We have serious intel suggesting that somewhere on campus in East Lafayette there's a monstrous Queen alien just pumping out Purduestaches. If I were Darrell Hazell, the new HC, I'd be afraid. I'd be very afraid.

15 weeks 2 days ago Thanks CJM

Been awhile... Hope all is well, man

15 weeks 2 days ago Really?

17 weeks 15 hours ago Wow

All this brilliant commentary on the catfish concept and nomenclature is fascinating. I just Set out to do some good ol fashioned LULZ IRISH...

17 weeks 17 hours ago Yep

Somebody's gonna go after those phone records at some point-- if I were a betting man I'd put good money on one of the reporters that did a sit-down and feels humiliated by the whole thing.

If there in fact was some girl that he sat on the phone with all night discussing his hopes and dreams, certainly she's gonna come out at some point, probably in some exclusive paid interview, book deal, or otherwise a cash grab. Unless, that is, she's already been given a sizeable sum to vanish, as it were.

Lies produce more lies, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the 'truths' of the case revealed this week may very well be retracted as the story continues to unfold. Perhaps Swarbrick himself may end up selling the kid up the river and discussing how the ND athletic community was lied to by Te'o in a final effort to distance the Golden Dome from this whole thing.

But yeah, the OP is right-- if he is the victim he claims to be, it's time to pony up some proof.

17 weeks 1 day ago Yeah

The Friday archive got away from me a little bit last month. I plan on starting a 2013 page of the FridayFun stuff and ultimately locking the '12 page.

What do you guys think of that name, "Friday Fun?" Not sure if I'm all in with it, but "Friday Roughs" just didn't seem applicable any more...

18 weeks 2 days ago Didn't he

Post a tweet yesterday or Monday saying something to the effect that his return to AA was going to be a short trip, leaving Thursday, etc? Figured that was it right there...

19 weeks 15 hours ago Thanks so much guys

Hear your suggestions and am flattered by your kind words. After the dust settles on this, I'll let you know where it goes from there. Thanks and Go Blue

21 weeks 19 hours ago Today's "FridayRough"

21 weeks 20 hours ago Any press conferences

Later in the day, where the Mayan head priest takes full responsibility?

21 weeks 20 hours ago Sorry guys

Been really pushing the FridayRoughs on Twitter lately!

21 weeks 2 days ago I would also

like to say thanks for all the hoopla on Friday regarding the "DESTINY" drawing-- thing went pretty close to viral before the national attention and prayers rightfully shifted to Newtown.

Still, the D. Green thing was no easy act to follow-- thanks for the support!

23 weeks 1 day ago This thread

Was 100% pure Colombian awesome. So often this place is like mosh pit full of heavily armed ninjas ready to slice each other to ribbons in a moment's notice.

This thread, this Festivus miracle, shows a level of brotherhood typically reserved for conference titles and Saturday nights full of four-star commitments. Bravo, gentlemen!!

24 weeks 3 days ago I wouldn't even be surprised if he won it, or came close

The Heisman voting has become a joke.  Apart from RGIII last year, the Heisman Trophy has become a gift given to the most popular 'story' on the number one/hottest team of any given year.

What used to be an amazing honor has become a tool to attract page hits, or even worse, to justify previously written fluff.

NOW GET OFF MY LAWN GRUMBLE GRUMBLE

24 weeks 3 days ago "Where did it all go wrong?"

24 weeks 4 days ago OUTSTANDING

Coincidence...?  Nah.

25 weeks 1 day ago Happy Thanksgiving Everybody

Eat well, my friends.
The hating of Buckeyes burns a lot of calories.

25 weeks 2 days ago Easy

David. Freakin'. Boston.

Although our boy Charles put the stake through his heart... I just could never stand that guy.

Other finalists include Nate Clements, Troy Smith, Katzenmoyer, and who could forget Nick Mangold. Ape.

26 weeks 17 hours ago Yeah, that's not UMHS

If you look closely, you'll find Desmond was visiting Frigid County Regional Hospital. It's up north, I guess.

26 weeks 1 day ago Torn Rotator Cuff?

I'd love to hear your take on that mess. And learn how far along I am, hur hurr. I would look it up on WebMD or something but then I'd have to leave MGo. (I firmly believe this blog is only about 3yrs away from being a self-sustaining Internet of its own...)

26 weeks 2 days ago What are you talking about

Everyone is left-handed. Right-handed people are make-believe, like the Tooth Fairy and Bigfoot and the Ohio State Compliance Office.

26 weeks 5 days ago Attitudes & Opinions

It's what makes this site so tremendous when it's at it's best. And it's also what makes it so messy and divisive when it's at it's worst. Whether or not this is a good era for the blog or a bad one largely depends on your own personal opinions of those who are making the most noise, and their own attitudes, for better or worse. The blog is evolving again...

I am sure I will see you around, Blue, here or elsewhere... But thanks for a stellar job in the face of confusion.

26 weeks 6 days ago Genius

This OP bows to no one. You can take your informative title and shove it up your ulnar nerve, Mgoblog.

You want your meaningful content spoonfed to you, then maybe this isn't the place for you. Morans.

28 weeks 1 day ago Very nice

I think we'll definitely do a reader version at some point in the future, likely between the Game and the Bowl Game. (Sad I can't presumptuously say Rose Bowl right there...)

29 weeks 2 days ago Bingo

Your free imaginary candy corn will be delivered in 3 to 159 weeks. And sorry but all the imaginary chocolate kind is sold out at my local grocery stores. All they have left is that crappy Fall Mix with the enormous pumpkin sugar lumps mixed in.

29 weeks 2 days ago I'm really glad

We went with the Hunger Games there.

Free imaginary candy corn to the first one who guesses what the heck I'm talkin about.

29 weeks 3 days ago How truly apropo

That a man experiencing a self-inflicted banishment to freakin' Siberia speaks of how miserable it is in Buckeye City, Buckeye aka Hell Incarnate aka Columbus Ohio aka We're So Gloomy People Would Rather Live in Freakin Siberia, OH.

29 weeks 3 days ago Derrick Green

The biggest concern to me is Oregon-- he's visiting Eugene on Nov 17(?) and they've definitely been using all that Nike influence ($) to put together a solid visit experience. That's our biggest hurdle if you ask me-- can't help a kid for being curious about the allure of Phil Knight U.

But at the same rate, I think there's a lot of smoke n mirrors that goes on out there, a lot of used car salesmanship. Green hasn't been easily sold to anywhere else, so that's a good thing.

In the end you can't fault anyone for not taking such a huge decision lightly...

30 weeks 18 hours ago You never doubt

The intestinal precognitive abilities of Sam Webb. This is good news.

30 weeks 3 days ago Thanks so much

For the kind words. I can't guarantee anything more on a weekly basis, of course... But we'll see where the UM blog celebrity round of the caption contest goes... Could be a test run for future things, who knows?

Watch football the minute you wake up until you either a.) leave to go out fashionably late for the evening or b.) pass out in the wee hours of the morning with some Pac12 postgame show droning on in the darkness.

Shower if you want. Or don't.

If you live alone, feel free to turn up the TV volume to ungodly levels when you leave the room to go to the bathroom. When people say freedom is a privilege, this is what they're talking about.

And leave remnants of all food consumed throughout the day on the coffee table. Chicken wings? Empty chip bags? Those six pack rings that kill dolphins? Leave it all there as a tribute to the day's conquests. Ants shmants.

Is all of this disgusting and maybe juvenile? Sure. But once that page is turned, you can never go back. So I say revel in your glorious and excusable bachelorhood.

Good stuff, 707. Happy Wife Day, my friends.

You can help, since I'm not much of a Facebook guy-- any idea on the pixel proportions??

37 weeks 4 days ago Naw

Quite the opposite, in fact

37 weeks 4 days ago Alright

Now that the issue has been resolved, I'd like to make a brief statement. While I am a contracted designer for the MGoStore and help promote it within this site and beyond, I am not its proprietor, business manager or owner. As far as this issue was concerned, it was not my call, and i refrained to comment out of respect for those who have indeed made the appropriate decision for everyone.

Secondly, when I did create the design, I was not aware of the Tae Odoms design. All apologies to him and his charity... I give my word that there was no intent to steal on anyone else's endeavors let alone a charitable pursuit.

Finally, I'd like to address Turd Ferguson's animosity towards me, presumably the result of his thinking I was refusing to acknowledge him. I apologize if you felt slighted or ignored, but I had no intent to betray any business partners or partnerships just because you'd called me out. And as for the avatar thing, I took that stance (and defend it) because I created that artwork specifically to be my signature image. Plenty of other readers use my work as their avatar and I have no issues with this at all, but I'd like to reserve rights to the little #60 Lego guy b/c I'll likely go back to it someday. I hope that provides some understanding to my reasoning there.

39 weeks 5 days ago HOME UNIFORM CHANGES????!!

Well, not really, but while checking out Bolden's tweet about the honor of pulling on a UM jersey, I noticed something.

The number 5s are now hooked at the middle terminal, like Iowa's if you're not sure what I mean. Confirmed it by looking at Mealer's sleeve digits as well. Maybe it's something only the designers or typography junkies can appreciate or care about, but that's no minor aesthetic change AFAIC. And no, I for one don't necessarily care for it.

40 weeks 1 day ago Thx

Today's storyline actually broke off into three separate ones as I thought about how the mental health community would view our fanatici-- err, I mean devotion to UM Football. The finished product was what I originally set out to create, but you may see some of the others soon enough. Go Blue!

40 weeks 3 days ago Me too

41 weeks 2 days ago A few things

a.) I wear medium, sometimes L depending on the shirt. And I'm not a small guy. I hear you on the Hoke sizes though...

b.) Dreads are untouchable as per the athletic dept. if anything we do reminds even a blind tree sloth of Denard in the slightest way, we're in violation ad the school is too if they fail to respond.

c.) I don't really have a C. Just looks weird with only an A and a B.

41 weeks 2 days ago Hockey

I started out as that defenseman who was afraid of the puck and cleared it first chance he could get; graduated to the one-dimensional cannon-from-the-point blue liner; then became a power forward and forechecking freak a la Neely with increasing confidence; became the full-blown center and playmaker but was eventually moved because I was always out of position in my own zone; and finally settled back on the wing as something of a finesse player with good touch.

I've played in leagues all over eastern Pa (except Philly) and earned all-league honors in several. What that means is that I'd be the laughing stock of the rink if I ever played anywhere near the state of Michigan.

You can say you love Spielman after his embarrassing display during The Game last year. Dude was literally fuming-- on the air mind you-- because Ohio couldn't pull it off... At one point he almost seemed to be making excuses for their mistakes and couldn't hold back the "wait til next year w/ Urbz" meme.

He sounded like your common white trash Buckeye homer. Poo poo on ESPN for allowing it, although I swear someone in the On-Air Talent dept in Bristol is clearly a Buckeye lover-- it seems like every time you turn on the WWLIS it's Robert Smith, Eddie George, Joey Galloway, etc etc etc. What gives?

41 weeks 6 days ago Uh oh

I'm suddenly worried about Denard's Twin City mojo when he'll be forced to wear those new ADIZERO socks at the Cowboy Classic.

42 weeks 16 hours ago Well let's just say

That it was no accident that I added a blog label titled 'Michigan Football Gods' this week.

On the other hand, I realized yesterday that I want to wrap up any hanging storylines in the next few weeks. Real live football is coming!!!

42 weeks 17 hours ago Yeah, that's great stuff

When I originally started planning out the storyline, I really got carried away with all these cameos of UM greats and others in the afterlife... and, in the end, it all comes down to story length.  And they're already getting longer than I want them to be, which makes for SO much more work. Although I only published 2 strips this week, I essentially did enough artwork for 4.5 of my typical story length...

So in the end I chose to streamline and not include anyone but Bo.  Perhaps one day I'll kill Glenn again and he can catch up with some of the other greats, haha

42 weeks 1 day ago Very Telling

42 weeks 1 day ago Been looking forward to this unveil

It's not bad... we knew the NW stripe was going to be prominent, but I didn't anticipate this.  Actually there was all kind of talk that it was going to be arched, like the architecture in Evanston or something to that effect.

Looks better on the home and the away, obviously, because there's less contrast between the purple & black than purple & white.  Purple is a high value color, which means it's closer to black than white, which allows it to blend in better and therefore helps those white numbers pop.  The purple on the white distances itself more from its white ground, tricking your eye into conceiving that the stripes are part of the numbers rather than the background. The result may very well tamper with the viewer's ability to recognize the numeric shapes.

In other words, the white's won't look as good on TV.  I also think the whole thing will take another hit if and when the players aren't wearing the base layer.  Thoese sleeves certainly help sell the stripe motif, and I'm curious to see how it will look without them.

Still, not bad.  UnderArmour's hell bent on innovation... but at least they've learned a bit of restraint since last year.

42 weeks 2 days ago Not bad

Not lovin' the socks.  Still LOVIN' the one-color numbers more than anything else.

One thing is certain-- Adidas will be rooting for M perhaps more than us.  Look what's happened with Denard's UTL jersey.  Had we not come back those things would've been on the street for $9.97 during Art Fair... now they've sold like hotcakes all summer.

On a side note, I took my boy to McDonald's for breakfast this summer, and guess what I didn't see a single person buy, even though they were right there on the menu....?

An honorable mention would have gone to the year (2008?) were they put the online Teambuilder into play... Too bad the online component was constantly malfunctioning and 'losing' my uploads.  Grrrrrr, still sour about that.

43 weeks 2 days ago Pssst

We're on this.  Srsly.

For those of you that asked-- shirts cannot feature any branded Michigan name, slogan, artwork, lyric, imagery, and most of all, player likenesses in any way.  And by likeness I mean everything down to the haircut, uniform number, and/or nickname.

If that makes it hard, trust me... I am well aware of this handicap.

http://www.theblockhams.com/2012/07/truth-about-caitlin.html

As for the late-in-the-day publish, it's essentially a double strip and took a whole lot longer than I anticipated.  Plus there was some considerable detail necessary for today's strip. Curly hair, the starry firmament, etc.

1 year 1 week ago You know

The best selling shirt in East Lansing history.

1 year 1 week ago I wore a Half-Shield

for years and years, and then one summer signed into a league that required full face shield.  I had a full Itech cage lying around somewhere, but saw a good deal on a CCM/Leader retractable full visor and decided to try it out.

For me, I'm not a big fan.  The fog can be an issue no matter how well you supposedly treat it-- I even tried out the ol' toothpaste glaze method and it still got foggy when you got on the bench.  That's what made the retractable interesting-- you could pop it 'up' like a riot gear helmet.

As far as the 'playability' factor-- I thought it was a significant issue.  Felt boxed in, and peripheral awareness was compromised quite a bit.  It just kinda slowed me down, and I felt a step behind.

With that being said, I still own that HT2 helmet with the full cage on it, and I've noticed myself grabbing it more and more for open hockey and stuff like that as I get older.  I've already lost teeth and at this stage in my life it's just not worth it.  But if I was 17 or 18-- or more importantly, if my career and future was on the line-- I'd go no visor at all, no question.

I know nothing of Magic: The Gathering, but I knew I wanted cards up on the desk with her number.  So I left 'em blank and figured I'd just drop 'em into the comic, all raster style.

When I googled the Magic cards, I found all these awesome Photoshopped fake cards of Mr. T. and stuff like that.  When I saw the Chuck Norris, I just knew that Bump had to have it.

As for good ol' Bump, he's evolved into his own self a bit.  He's not just a simple stereotype anymore...

Obviously I feel compelled to say that not all of the above t-shirt designs are mine.  And out of all the ones I was not a part of, I sincerely wish I could say I came up with "Worst State Ever."  That's gold, Jerry.

As for ProfitGoBlue... actually a great question.  I've actually taught a lecture/discussion on that very topic, whether creativity is learned or innate.  When I have more time I'll give you my thoughts.

Tom and Pam lives just a few doors down from his mom and dad.

So he has a tendency to drop in his parent's house for breakfast, mostly as an excuse to talk shop with his Dad.  I have a theory that every good comic has some sort of watering hole, or water cooler or whatever, where the characters check in to talk about what's going on in the world.

So I guess mine is Donna Blockham's breakfast nook.
